Hidden Legacy - The Untold Story Of America's First Sports Superstars - Black Jockeys

American jockeys for most of the nineteenth century were African Americans. It was a dangerous occupation that paid extremely well for successful jockeys. These riders were pushed out of this occupation, as jockeys became recognized as important factors in racing results and as it became increasingly lucrative, just as they were pushed out of other desirable jobs in the era of Jim Crow.

The HIDDEN LEGACY project is a fascinating look into an era when african americans dominated America’s first national sport of thoroughbred horse racing.

The goal of the HIDDEN LEGACY project is to shed light on the often unknown and largely forgotten contributions of black athletes to America’s first national sport, by utilizing AI in conjunction with modern graphic tools to bring this rich history to life for a new generation to discover.

Churchill Downs Ceases Operations Following Equine Fatalities

Churchill Downs Inc., the owner of the Louisville-based track, has announced that the remaining race meets will be relocated to Ellis Park Racing and Gaming, situated in Henderson, Kentucky. The transition of Spring Meet races is scheduled to commence on June 7. Following the unusually high number of horse fatalities at the racetrack, Churchill Downs conducted an extensive inspection and collaborated with the Horseracing Integrity & Safety Authority to introduce new safety protocols. Bill Carstanjen, CEO of CDI, expressed deep distress and condemned the recent horse injuries, stating, "The incidents that have occurred at our track are profoundly disheartening and completely unacceptable. Despite our earnest efforts to identify the cause of these recent equine injuries, and although no issues have been linked to our racing surfaces or environment at Churchill Downs, we recognize the need for a comprehensive review of all the circumstances and details to fortify our surface, safety, and integrity protocols." A representative from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission informed WEHT that Churchill Downs requested the relocation as a precautionary measure, and the commission is working alongside CDI and HISA to investigate the fatalities. PETA, an animal rights organization, has called for an end to the "risky game" played with the lives of horses. PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo expressed relief that CDI decided to suspend races at the Louisville track, although she expressed doubts about simply changing venues as a solution. "... PETA has been advocating for since May 2, but Churchill Downs should not gamble with these horses' lives by merely transferring the problem elsewhere. Shifting to a different chamber could have the same fatal outcome," said Guillermo. Guillermo expressed frustration with the racing industry's resistance to adopting technology that has previously been proven to save lives. She stated, "Until racetracks install synthetic surfaces and utilize CT scanning equipment for injury detection, among other necessary improvements, they cannot feign bewilderment over these fatalities." Track officials have committed to conducting a thorough investigation into safety measures while races are held at Ellis Park. The Spring Meet is scheduled to continue until July 3. “Legends of the Derby” Nike Air Force 1’s Sneaker collection

Churchill Downs and Factory8384 are proud to present “Legends of the Derby” - a limited-edition sneaker collection, featuring thirteen bespoke and customized Nike Air Force 1’s that pay homage to a highly exclusive and illustrious group of Triple Crown winners. Only thirteen horses have achieved Triple Crown status in horse racing history, and this collection not only immortalizes the legacy of past Kentucky Derby champions, but also aims to bring the excitement of horse racing to an even wider audience.

The “Legends of the Derby” collection is inspired by the jockey silks of the Triple Crown winners, and each sneaker is meticulously handcrafted using premium materials. The full collection of thirteen sneakers will be on display at Churchill Downs Racetrack from May 4th through May 6thfor the 149th Kentucky Derby.
