She’s in a teen group during service. He isn’t in it, yet, so she is there just not with him.

Some churches have different meetings for the different groups. Like the Mormons but it’s actually during the ‘main’ service.

The boyfriend might not be able to join the girlfriend in her group yet because of church rules or something like that. I can’t remember why but I know a church who did something like that. The kids at the church could join in the group but outsiders, ones who came once in a while, wasn’t a member/member yet,or another reader I can’t remember, couldn’t join the group. Activities yes, meetings no.

That’s my experience though so it might be different for others.

My little brother is in high school, and he started dating a girl who’s very active at her Second Baptist church. She asked him to go to a couple events at the church, and now he’s started going to worship every Sunday.

Yesterday, my mom found out that, when my brother goes to worship, his girlfriend isn’t there with him, because she’s practicing for some teen group thing at the church during the service. (I think that doesn’t make sense, but whatever.) Instead of considering my brother actually enjoys going to church, and that’s why he’s started going every weekend, she dismissively scoffed and was all, “Wait, why would he want to go to church if his girlfriend isn’t even in there with him?” It also came out that he’s been attending a Bible study, but he didn’t have his own Bible to take with him. I found an extra copy we don’t really use and went to drop it off today, and my dad was just kind of like, “Oh…uh, okay,” when I explained to him what I was doing there, almost like it was weird that I did that.

We weren’t super religious growing up, but my family has never been against Christianity and has even been culturally Christian. It’s just disappointing to me that my brother taking a sudden interest in going to church and attending Bible study isn’t being cultivated more seriously by my parents. I don’t understand how cultural Christianity got to a point of calling your family a “Christian household,” but not taking it seriously when your kids express curiosity about the Christian faith. Sure, maybe my brother is only going to church right now because of his girlfriend, but who’s to say this newfound openness to Christ can’t grow into something bigger down the line?
