It's so frustrating to love the cinema that I love and NOT love Wong Kar-Wai
It really doesn't make any sense I should adore the guy but I really don't care

my perspective around the crippling yet warm loneliness of fallen angels (no spoilers)
Tumblr media
一 Fallen Angels (1995), dir. Wong Kar-Wai
defining this movie is a challenging task. but, if I was to sum it up in one sentence, I guess it would be "corny and depressing romance so corny it becomes refreshing".
I remember Fallen Angels as the first movie I've watched when I decided to take the ritual of watching movies more seriously, and it was basically the first film I'd ever seen that doesn't follow the cookie-cutter hollywood format of the hero's journey (I believe that was around 2 years ago). that's why I have such an affection for this movie.
to this day (and maybe until the day I die) I am not a good movie critic, that's why this is not a well-formulated critique in any way lol. so yes, I may be very biased in the way I percieve this film, so because of this I will not get into much detail of its technical aspects or its issues, I will just try to convince you to watch it if you haven't yet :D
˖ ࣪⊹ ִ┈┈┈┈ ♰ ┈┈┈┈ ⊹ ִֶָ𓂅
firstly, I'd like to address an elephant in the room: this is a Wong Kar-Wai film, so it strongly follows his signature style; the surreal and dreamy coloring, jittery camerawork, mind boggling action sequences including the step-frame takes and so much more. but I'm sure you've noticed most of these aspects through other blogs, pinterest boards and tiktok edits, so I want to put more emphasis into his abilities of storytelling and his producing process.
I am not the biggest fan of saying things in the sort of "omg only this director/person could ever create this!", but it is undeniable that WKW's way of thinking is very unconventional. Cristopher Doyle, responsible for a lot of the movie's cinematography (and who is someone that worked with him in many other projects until 2004) says that WKW always tried to look for what the movie had to say, even if discarding parts of the script was necessary. what I admire the most about his work is the way his characters feel alive considering that the flesh of his films are the struggles and "boring" aspects of life. I reeaaally love the way he and his crew are able to make the "disposable" parts of life so interesting. of course, the action and story shifting segments are part of what gives meaning to everything, but the connections between them are what makes all of it worth watching and feeling the characters' emotions.
so, how does the story go? this is actually a tricky question haha. in case you are not familiar, Fallen Angels is directly attached to Chungking Express, another film by Kar-Wai released one year earlier (1994). WKW himself reveals that Chungking Express and Fallen Angels should have been published as one merged movie, but he ended up losing track of the project's length (also, in my opinion, you can watch FA before CE if you want to, it doesn't follow any particular order to me). Here is where his instinct-leading creative process really shines; it may seem impractical, however this project might be the pinacle of his love for cinema, considering it was a project made for "making himself comfortable with making movies again" after a prior not so self-fulfilling project.
"You try to cope with the mass audience, but in fact you are not doing something for them—I would be fighting with myself. I thought, I don’t have to make big films, I can make small films that I can be happy with. I can find my own audience. So I made Chungking Express with a very low budget, and we made the film very quickly, only six weeks from the idea to the edit" 一 Wong Kar-Wai for BOMB magazine, Winter 1998 issue.
considering the whole project, he explains that Chungking Express and Fallen Angels both revolve around the city of Hong Kong, yet in its different sides: the brightly lit and uneventful hustle of the daytime with CE, and the freezing, dark and crippling loneliness of the nighttime through FA.
with that said, in my opinion, neither is "more impactful" or "to be more considered" than the other; as WKW himself said, both are complementary to each other, and even the characters are interchangeable. however, I am here to talk about the rispid and desolating feeling of the "type of loneliness" depicted in Fallen Angels specifically, since it resonates more deeply with me and it might do the same to you if you're looking for big-neon-city anxiety.
Tumblr media
一 Fallen Angels (1995), dir. Wong Kar-Wai
now onto the actual story. both movies are divided in 2 "main storylines", contributing to the perspective of interchangeable characters. in Fallen Angels, one of the sides has a more intense dynamic that follows a hitman and his agent, whilst the other follows the wobbly story of a mute man who ends up meeting a heartbroken woman who asks for his help on getting her revenge. this all may seem kind of non-sensical, but I believe that one of the film's most charming features is its ways of making people so unrelated as these characters become so connected and dependant of each other just because of life's randomness yet without making it feel forced.
also, I haven't even mentioned side characters and I think i'd be too dense and maybe annoying to get into the details of their importance (especially if you haven't seen the movie yet), but I guess I could say they are the ones who provoke and question the main ones' morals. here, WKW's characters are the most alive when they feel confused, uncomfortable, alarmed and tired because of the harsh metropolitan life (just like real people). with that, they find themselves in a constant fight with other people's morals and even their own.
this sense of desolation may be depressing at its core, but it also defines the familiar matter between all of these people, bringing a comfort-like yet melancholic sentiment to the situations that unravel; no one is truly right-minded but you always try to consider where they are coming from. they may do fucked up things but they pay the price to life itself.
this melancholy carries the story's events until its very end, and I just love it. of course I'd rather choose that we live in a world where everything is perfect and this comfort found in sadness is unrealistic, but considering the societies we live in, specially in big and poorly planned cities, I find this movie to be a memorable portrait of this misterious feeling of loving desolation.
I wish I was able to get into the details of each character more deeply, but I think that would break the purpose of the "no spoilers" promise I made & I think it's more fun for you to discover them by yourself when watching the film. however, I'd like to say that, even though I feel like everyone in the narrative is able to connect to one another, each one has their singularities, flaws and quirks, which makes the familiarities shared by all the more precious.
therefore, the events and personalities present in this film are incredibly rich and capable of conveying this specific feeling of constant fighting for survival and sanity in such a complex and harsh environment. sometimes the narrative follows the actual outbursts of these causes, but I believe that the true beauty of this movie lies in the moments of hopelessness and fatigue.
˖ ࣪⊹ ִ┈┈┈┈ ♰ ┈┈┈┈ ⊹ ִֶָ𓂅
I wish I was able to spark your interest in watching Fallen Angels! this movie is very meaningful to me and I've been interested in writing about it for some time now! the thing is, this is my very first blog post ever so it might end up being shitty and I just don't know it yet hah... it's okay though, I've been struggling with being able to talk about the things I like just because my brain thinks I can't do it, so I think this is a step forward on fixing this! :)
in case you watch the movie, please leave your thoughts here so you can share your perspective! I really want to know other people's opinions about the things I love, even if you don't like it as much!
thank you for reading, see you!!! <3

currently reading: bel canto, but mainly just a lot of medical articles
currently working on: finding a new job because hellooooo 2 year itch
current obsession: ok so if you look at english language sources, most say that pregnant onions are toxic and therefore not edible. however, the medicinal value of pregnant onions is apparently not uncommon knowledge in other cultures (fuck yeah china and south africa). so a family friend gave us a few mature plants that make into soup and i picked off the little seedlings and have been tending to them. that led to spending more time tending to my other plants (i have a lot more loquat trees than i remember) and now i’m trying to air layer some stuff. TLDR; gardening

after reading your great analysis of FACE, I still can't really see a full-fledged queer narrative in it. Besides the basic separate elements, what I do see after reading the lyrics and analyzing how the album is structured and seeing what Jimin has shared about it, is a break-up album. To me, with the way the songs are ordered, it tells a story of a person coming out of a troublesome relationship and having to deal with all the leftover baggage of it [ external and inner], told in a very universally relatable way, not really seeing a very queer outlook on it. and I don't see anything bad with that hs. we all kinda agree that music/sound wise,, jimin is a bit boring lol, and to me in this instance also thematically, but not everything has to be LIE or Taemin's want, for his first solo endevor I get it. I also don't discourage any queer readings of it!! But I don't get why are you so against readings like this? it lowkey reminded me of chungking express or fallen angels
ok so. The point of my post wasn't necessarily to try to argue that the song unequivocally is about queerness. It was just a look at the narrative and thematics that reflect themes of queerness, such as the overlapping of loneliness and desire. I honestly don't really think expressing sexual identity was the main goal of it. It looks at Like Crazy as a discussion starter, or a refraction of this specific experience of alienation.
The reason I take issue with interpretations of it that are like “this is about a break-up!!!” is bcs like. It goes against what Jimin himself said. I think it's entirely possible a break-up could have inspired Like Crazy or other facets of the album. But the point is that each song is an internal monologue. In no song on the EP is there a clear recipient or witness. The song is about Jimin for Jimin. Each of them explore inner struggle through the use of point of view and seemingly deliberate language that gives the impression of a recipient. FACE blurs the lines between audience and self by turning the concepts of a fan song or love song or breakup song on its head to discuss internal despair, helplessness, loss, abjection, desire, etc. Jimin himself describes FACE as a way to “[...] introduce Jimin’s true feelings that I didn’t bring up anywhere else. I looked back on myself and honestly expressed my […] emptiness and loneliness.” The main thesis of the album is loneliness, and Like Crazy acts as a subversion of it through the avenue of what sounds like any other synthpop club love song. Everything from the music video to the choreo indicated something internal - there is no outer force or source of conflict to be seen. And I think that's a very deliberate choice for something that could very well be just a horny love song. I'm not trying to reach and pretend FACE is Want by Taemin. They don't even have the same purpose in the first place. Not everything has to be something else. It's just glaringly evident to me that, while lots of aspects can have many different means, the core of FACE is to discuss an inner dialogue of a man whose entire existence seen teenhood has been as a media object and uses media tropes and a listeners expectations as an avenue to discuss something so incredible intimate and vulnerable as loneliness and personhood. Which is a thesis that a "break-up album" narrative not only ignores but belittles.
TLDR bcs this ask feels patronizing so im sure you dont actually care abt what i have to say about it: Can FACE have been inspired by a break-up? Yes. Is that the point? No. Whether it is queerness or heartbreak, the perspective is inwards and persistently abjected. Why is the concept of self-affirmation so foreign to you that you can't conceive of an inner dialogue and an idea of alienation that is experienced as something outside of relations to an other?

films for you ☆
film recs for comfort when feeling sad
mamma mia (108 mins.)
usually for me it’s enough to cheer me up or get my mind off sad things just to watch lighthearted films when i’m feeling down, and it’s always an added bonus if it’s a movie i have seen before - and i know your love for mamma mia is greater than that of anyone else i know so it came to mind first thing :) i also thought the music in the movie might be uplifting for the vibes and nostalgia ahh
20th century women (119 mins.)
because greta gerwig <3 and women <3 and both those things put together is comfort at its peak and it’s also said to be comforting, funny, and bittersweet all at once ??! one of my friends said it lit up their lives and yeah, i think you’d just like it maybe :)
bottoms (92 mins.)
this is the film by emma seligman that recently came out / is only out in select theaters but it’s essentially this silly fun campy stylish movie about bffs pj & josie starting a fight club to rizz cheerleaders lmfaoooo my description doesn’t sell it very well but! yes
the woman who ran (77 mins.)
full of women and cats (!!!) and just one of those quiet, simplistic films where the emotional undercurrent sneakily washes in
imagine me and you (93 mins.)
the og “never let your husband stop you from meeting your wife” film + cute romantic comedy!
café lumière (103 mins.)
a film where nothing really happens but whats cool about it is that it’s dedicated to yasujirō ozu (whose movie ‘good morning’ i considered adding to this as well, and maybe you’d like it too? :o) so it’s kinda in celebration of the routine and/or stillness of life and the beauty (and meaning) in ordinary moments
there are some really nice train and nature and city life shots as well that reminded me of you when i first watched so there’s that:) but just a caveat it’s either you might enjoy this or find it extremely boring btw hajshaja this also probably goes for most films on here bc i suck
the daytrippers (87 mins.)
that little miss sunshine meets the royal tenenbaums energy yessireerrrrr
cha cha real smooth (108 mins.)
i have honestly yet to watch this so i can’t give any real faithful summary but based on the premise and from what ive heard i think it might be a bit resonant for you? and maybe even be a little boost of serotonin?? will have to get back to u on this fs
scott pilgrim vs the world (113 mins.)
brie larson’s performance of black sheep is healing to the ears and soul ngl
luca (95 mins.)
this is a coming of age, animated movie that i think you’ll enjoy for a couple reasons! one is that it's a colorful, energetic slice of life movie. second is that even for a film that’s small in scale it navigates so much, like a lot of it is about identity and the anxiety and challenges of growing up and/or older, but is also about discovery and acceptance !! third it has so many heartfelt moments that almost reminds me of the last wish which i know you liked so :)
mystery train (106 mins.)
i was thinking a lot about what you said, that you liked films that are about the mundane, that don’t necessarily prioritize plot and action. hence why when mystery train made its way to me, i immediately thought of you :) knowing you enjoy wong kar-wai films, i think this will be one that you can’t miss! think of it like a more humorous and lighter chungking express <4
film recs for wallowing and/or Thinking when feeling sad
mistress america (84 mins.)
this one acts as a transition from the previous set of films to this new one in the sense it can technically be in either ??! but yes this is also a greta film :) it’s a bit weak in some parts of the film but has some heart in it too and some gut punchy scenes saurrr
tokyo.sora (127 mins.)
melancholy film about loneliness, friendship (or rather just connections in general), isolation, mental struggles, yknow all the depressing good stuff thrown in with really pretty visuals lol + i’d say there’s some sensitive scenes/topics here though so ! just a warning :)
columbus (105 mins.)
i havent finished the full thing yet, but there are scenes in this film where we get to just hear the birds, the cicadas, the score sweeping in as the conversation melts away, and there are these breathtaking shots of architecture and nature that just have this meditative, sweet, attentive feel to them
but i placed it on this list in particular because the characters and their flaws, arcs, and desires really drive the story. and kogonada somehow uses the sights and buildings in the film to be representative of the feelings and/or relevant to something internal within the characters and it makes all the emotional highs that much ?? better ? if that makes sense !! so yes that !! i think you’d really like this !!
la la land (129 mins.)
this is just if tbawy x blue lightning was a musical
my own private idaho (104 mins.)
sad and gay
frances ha (86 mins.)
sad and contemplative and Should have been gay (probably is anyway! we love subtext!)
my broken mariko (85 mins.)
a somber and sensitive rumination on grief, loss, and friendship - this one’s a bit on the heavier side so i perhaps only recommend this if you want something that fuels your sadness or if you want to maybe cry? but then i’d still advise to be careful bae
my life as a zucchini (66 mins.)
because who doesn’t want to cry over lumps of clay who just want to feel like they belong
girl picture (102 mins.)
i’d say this one is mostly for the vibes hahah like it has quite a skam feel to it that i think you’d enjoy. and i think on a bad day in a particular where you’re not feeling so great, this film could be one that helps you be a little invested in someone else’s thoughts, emotions, and life, and almost take a break from your own? :)
film recs for when you don’t want to do neither in particular but you’re feeling sad and want to consume something
this one’s on the more misc side so no descriptions, just the titles :)
the meyerowitz stories, new and selected (112 mins.)
but im a cheerleader (85 mins.)
shiva baby (78 mins.)
real women have curves (86 mins.)
happy hour (317 mins. <\4)
whisper of the heart (111 mins.)
breakfast on pluto (cilian !! + 128 mins.)
happy together (96 mins.)
midnight in paris (94 mins.)
the darjeeling limited (92 mins.)
high fidelity (113 mins.)
the green ray (98 mins.)
fallen angels (98 mins.)

We spent a lot of time just reading straight garbage this weekend, all the whole returning and rereading a dense, long passage from The Trial struggling with an uncle from the country who has a lawyerly connection but doesn't and aaaaaah. But anyway, trash, schlock. I can't even qualify myself as enjoying schlock, but it's something I'll read regardless. And I won't take my time on it, I won't appreciate the art or the paneling or the dialogue or even the story, I will just speed through to see what egregiously dumb thing someone will cram in for the sake of shock or surprise or whatever emotion one is trying to convey as they throw shit at the window, seeing what will stick. But in a way, I appreciate schlock for it's honesty, for its refusal to contort itself into something more than it actually is. It knows it's bad but it's having fun. But one has to ask themselves if something can retain an aesthetic value in the general high-minded critic type when one gleefully wears the value of fun on its sleeve. Like Chungking Express is a beautifully shot, thoughtful film but my god is it boring; by that same measure, the sheer insanity of schlock is at the least engaging, but maybe at this point my mind has rotted from the imbibement of so much schlock that I can't meaningfully engage nor create things of slower, more mature aesthetic value???

chungking express (1994)
Tumblr media
directed by wong kar-wai
watched 14/05/2023
as much as i respect the endless technical craft that went into this (the sort than can only be pulled off by a blatant master like wong kar-wai), it seriously lost me in the second half. i was intrigued from the beginning, but they completely shifted the story halfway through, and i just ended up getting very bored, if appreciative of the filmmaking.

☕ films and movies! I know you're very into that (it being your major and all akdjdkd i mean)!! What are some of your favorites, which do you recommend, any hot takes on the topic? Any opinions on The Horror Genre?
heyyyyy bestieeeeee sorry this is late af i always suddenly freeze up whenever i’m asked like, very broad questions about film because i just LOVE IT SO MUCH and i feel like i’m gonna go on for way too goddamn long and bore everyone BUTTTT i shall now answer your questions!!! apologies in advance for the length of this.
so, what u first need to understand about me is i have a natural, deeply engrained love and bias towards melodramas, tragedies and films with a lot of violence (psychoanalyze that as u will) so my favourite movies certainly reflect these inclinations. also if there’s either gays or trans characters or mayhaps a male lead i can project onto and dream of stealing the gender from, there’s a big chance i’ll love it. i’m not super into comedies so when i like one that’s a big deal. oh, and i should probably mention i have a specific love of 80s/90s hong kong and taiwanese movies and i love directors like wong kar-wai, stanley kwan, tsai ming liang etc. as well as martial arts movies generally. you’ll notice this i think. generally though i find that the 80s and 90s appeal the absolute most to me when it comes to film actually. oh and one last point, my favourite cinematographer is christopher doyle and his greatest works are temptress moon, happy together and in the mood for love (which i believe featured several cinematographers but still).
regarding horror, i wanna say that i love the genre but i think it is vastly oversaturated with shit. generally i don’t care much for american horror at all. there are a few exceptions though, like i do enjoy sinister and the first conjuring movie a lot. i love jennifer’s body, of course, she’s in a league of her own. generally, i prefer horror that uses suspense and a buildup and doesn’t rely on jump scares for the scare element. if it can psychologically capture me i will most likely be recommending it. my absolute favourite horror movies (as mentioned below) are a tale of two sisters and possession.
now here’s a little list of favourite films i can think of on the spot, some of these are the ones i will mention every. single. time. and others are not AS important but nonetheless up there. so here goes:
farewell my concubine, possession (1981), rouge (1987), the handmaiden, moonlight, in the mood for love, chungking express, fallen angels, happy together, house of flying daggers, days of being wild, vive l’amour, get out, us. last life in the universe, pride and prejudice, amores perros, parasite, thirst (2009), my own private idaho, interstellar, crouching tiger hidden dragon, spirited away (i love ghibli overall, this is my favourite of their works), reservoir dogs (i hate tarantino but what i can i say...), ex machina, stand by me, the lost boys, atonement, only lovers left alive, a girl walks home alone at night, mother (2009), tokyo story (1953), mustang, the crow (1994), anna karenina (2012), hero (2002), the fall, empire records, let the right one in, saving face, russian ark, fucking åmål, ashes of time, la reine margot, the matrix trilogy, the lord of the rings trilogy, zodiac, dead poets society, suspiria (both), scream, much ado about nothing (1993), constantine, disobedience, never let me go, nosferatu (1979), the villainess, the assassin (2015), irma vep, millennium mambo, the innocents (2016), audition, the witch, crimson peak, red sorghum (zhang yimou’s every collaboration with gong li let’s be honest...), vincent & theo, stoker, the silenced, helter skelter, tale of tales, as above so below
now this isn’t to say this is an exhaustive list or that these are all the BEST movies out there, they just are the films that resonate most with me. except farewell my concubine IS the greatest movie out there. fact. i also wanna, on that topic, mention (since i have a different follower base than i used to when my blog was essentially a shrine to him) that leslie cheung is my all time favourite actor and yeah, my blog used to literally be probably at least 60% me posting about him and going insane <3

and top 5 wong kar-wai movies!
embarrassingly i've only watched 4 😔 here is my VERY tentative ranking since i love all four - their atmosphere is absolutely magical - so it was hard ranking them
chungking express: it seems so haphazardly made but in a beautiful way. i might be biased since it was my first wong kar-wai film but i loved it sm
fallen angels: a bit slow at parts but also genuinely funny and again, very atmospheric
happy together: i didn't love it when i saw it first - i thought it taking place outside of hong kong removed a bit of that magic - but i couldn't stop turning it over in my head after watching it and isn't that what art is about? and i can't find it right now but i recently read that a few days after leslie cheung's death tony leung called his phone by accident and it went to voicemail, and he left a message saying "can we start over" and that hurt almost as much as the "say something/anything from the heart, even if it's sad scene". You know the one. the paragraph i just wrote makes me think i should have rated happy together higher 🤔
in the mood for love: now i'm REALLY not sure about this ranking omg. perhaps it should be flipped. it's a bit slow and i know that's the point but i did find myself a bit bored at times. but it's SUCH a magnificent film aesthetically speaking... the fashion and the architecture and the barely concealed nostalgia... yeah this ranking is definitely fucked sorry!

Wong’s Way (2011)
An anomaly in the cookie-cutter world of Cantopop, FAYE WONG has paradoxically found success by playing against the rules. Prestige Hong Kong follows her down the road less travelled
FIVE YEARS MAY not seem like that long, but it can be a lifetime in an entertainment industry that feeds off the right-here and the right-now. So it came as a surprise when, half a decade ago, Faye Wong decided to step back from the limelight and resume as much of a normal life as might ever be possible for a woman whose music has sold in the millions and who has combined that side of her existence with an acclaimed acting career.
From an existence playing before tens of thousands, what the Beijing-born Wong longed for at that point in time was a life tucked away in the peace and tranquillity of home – and after almost 20 years in the spotlight, and with her every move followed by a fan base that can be tallied in the millions, who could really blame her?
But as an artist who in an age of corporate conformity flatly refuses to play to any predetermined stereotype, Wong has always preferred to play by her own rules. It may come as a surprise, then, to find out that Faye Wong was not always “Faye” – diehard fans will remember a period in which the artist was known as Shirley Wong Ching-man, an affectation suggested by her record company early in her career, because of the stigma associated with the hip factor (or lack thereof) of mainland Chinese artists and names.
Even Wong’s early hits weren’t what you would call “original” – her first few albums were filled with formulaic Cantopop: collections of saccharine, predictable tunes that failed to properly utilise her delicate, lilting soprano. When she broke out of that shell in 1992, after a short travel hiatus, she finally found success, initially with a cover of a Japanese chart-topper in Cantonese, “Fragile Woman.”
Despite her disinclination to be impacted by her local contemporaries, Wong was not without her influences. She covered songs by The Cranberries, took quirky style cues from Björk and collaborated with the Cocteau Twins. The further she strayed from Cantopop, the more fame she found, penning her own songs and admittedly self-indulgent lyrics. She rapped on “No Exit,” yodelled through “Di-Dar” and even won the hearts of nerds by wailing the English-language title track to the hit video-game Final Fantasy VIII, “Eyes On Me.”
Even when her albums weren’t critical or commercial successes, her fame continued to grow, exponentially and uncontrollably. Her handful of acting roles, including in Chungking Express and 2046, showcased a curious, simultaneous aloofness and magnetism, an infectious, ravishing oddness.
In 2005, two months before she married actor Li Yapeng, she announced that she would take a break from show business. And so for five years there have been sightings, the occasional public appearance and the work for her own charity, but otherwise it’s pretty much been silence from Wong, as her fans – and the world at large – waited.
With that in mind, we should not have been surprised at the reaction to the news that Wong would finally be reemerging, to stage comeback concerts that started in Beijing last October, then took in Shanghai and Taipei before coming to Hong Kong, the place where Wong’s career was launched, for a series of shows in March. Tickets – for all nights, at all venues – sold out in a matter of days and the critical response has been overwhelming.
The headlines said it all: “The Diva is Back.”
What the Wong faithful have found is that their idol has lost none of the passion for the music that forms, as she puts it herself, part of her fate. They’ve been treated to nights filled with the songs that have formed the soundtrack for the lives of a generation here in Hong Kong – and beyond.
When Prestige Hong Kong found the interview-shy 40-year-old, she was in between shows and letting that fate take its course. What Wong wants the world to know is that throughout her storied career there has, she says, never been any real plan. She’s simply a woman who lets the cards fall as they may.
Can you talk a little about your return to the stage and playing live? What brought about the decision to play your recent concerts? I consider this a natural move for me. I’ve been doing several commercials as well as releasing some new singles over the past few years. So this was a natural progression back to live performances. It’s all part of my career.
How did you go about deciding what form the concerts would take and the songs you played? There’s no special form or arrangement that’s deliberately conceived for my concert. I believe my singing is the main source of interaction between the audience and me. Every show is unique and my mood is different, depending on the atmosphere. It’s not my practice to talk much with people or have any planned speech in my concert, because I don’t want the conversation to ruin the whole integrity and mood of the arrangement of the concert. I hope my audiences can indulge themselves with my music, while also digesting the message my show is delivering.
After the recent concerts in Shanghai and Beijing, what’s your feeling about coming back on stage? It feels so good to see all my fans again.
Do you have any plans to work on a new album? If so, will you be writing songs yourself? There’s no plan to work on a whole new album. But there is a possibility to release singles, and maybe I’ll write some songs myself.
How different to you is the experience of playing live now as compared to when your career began? What have you learned and how much has the experience for you changed over the years? I’ve been working with different sets of crews, composers, producers etc since the beginning of my career. Each of these collaborations has opened up a whole new experience and been an amazing inspiration for me. Call it a fireworks feeling.
What was it that initially drew you to the music business? What was it that you found most exciting? I believe singing is my destiny, and it’s fate that this became my career. I find it gratifying that I’m able to touch people’s lives with my songs. It’s a form of good karma.
Have your musical tastes changed or evolved as you matured as a person and as an actress? I admire different types of music and things depending on the different stages of my life.
Did becoming a mother change how you approached both your singing and your career? There was no change. I still sing with the same commitment and feeling, and it’s the same with my career.
And how much, do you think, did this change you as a person? The process of raising a child is part of my evolution as a human being. If you’re not a parent or don’t fully involve yourself as a parent, you’ll never realise this traditional, fulfilling role of parenthood. As a parent, it’s natural to want to show your best side and provide the best example to your child. However, sometimes it’s hard to break habits that may surface from time to time. It’s a painful cycle, because even though you realise your own faults, to change yourself completely requires a lot of courage and determination.
We’re curious about a typical day for Faye Wong. What’s your routine when you’re not performing? What time do you go to bed, what’s your favourite meal and what activities do you share with your kids? Basically, I go to bed and wake up the same time as my kids do. I got used to enjoying the regular pattern of a healthy lifestyle, but that won’t happen coming back to work.
Frankly, there’s so much to do when you take charge of a whole household. My life in the past few years was completely occupied by family and there was no time for me ever to feel bored. Sometimes I feel that I was even busier than when I was working as a singer.
Do you think your children share the same character as you? When I look at my kids, it’s like looking into a mirror and seeing the deepest side of myself.
What are the things that make you most happy now, compared with when you were younger? What do you now cherish most? I cherish everyone and everything. I’m fortunate to appreciate what I have and the people I know.
How do you see your image now? Are you an artist who is careful to control her image, or is it more a case of come what may? The most effortless style suits me best. I aim to be the most natural, honest in my approach. I want it to be pure, not something that seems too contrived or created just to fit the latest trend.
What are you most passionate about? To find the real meaning of life, and share it with lots of people.
What about acting? Is this something you’re keen to pick up again as well? If so, what kinds of films and roles might interest you? Right now, I have no plans on filming.
What are the challenges you see ahead in the next few years? What can your audience expect? My life has no planning, and I’m not a person who conceives everything in advance. It always depends on what’s being offered and what I feel like doing at that moment. There’s no pressure on myself – I leave everything to chance and fate.
The Smile Angel Foundation was founded in Beijing in 2006 by you and your husband, Li Yapeng, after your own child was afflicted with a cleft lip. It’s helped a lot of other children suffering from cleft lips and palates. Has the foundation changed your life or your character in any way? My contribution to Smile Angel Foundation is not as much as my husband’s involvement. He’s very busy working on plans to support the foundation. For me, basically, I’ll attend annual charity events and activities to lend my support.
On this project, we started everything from scratch and are very gratified to see how much it has accomplished. My husband is definitely the driving force behind the foundation, and I really admire his passion, courage and capability.
At your current stage, do you think you have evolved in your perspective of things compared with when you were younger? Can you share your road of growth a little bit? I was a bit stubborn, objective and capricious when I was younger. I’m now more willing to be open-minded and flexible, and always try to remind myself about this. It’s quite difficult to stop old habits surfacing from time to time. But I’m trying hard to accomplish it.
Do you have any advice on how to maintain a woman’s beauty and charm after the age of 30? First of all, you have to accept your age. I believe everyone has their own unique way to create their own charm and maintain their beauty, which is sometimes a very personal approach. One should find one’s own best way; there really is no standard formula for everyone to maintain their beauty. I believe the most natural side of a person is the most beautiful.
You’re acclaimed as a pioneer of alternative music. Does that mean you won’t compromise with the commercial market? I never define my music as “mainstream” or “edgy” or “alternative.” I just do what I like.

8, 13, and 29 for the movie ask game! :D
8. Where did you find movie recommandations?
I'm sorry this is probably not the answer you wanted but by talking with friends and colleagues. Lately I've been told I should watch Teen Beach Movie (by Jeffrey Hornaday) and Golden Eighties (by Chantal Akerman). I love that these are both how people see me.
Also my boyfriend is a huge movie buff so almost every evening he tells me what he's going to watch and I can decide if I'm interested to watch with him or not. We love discovering classic and/or asian movies together !
13. What was your favorite non-Hollywood movie you saw ?
I guess it's a tie between Jawan (by Atlee) and Twilight of the Warriors : Walled In (by Soy Cheang) !
29. What classic movie(s) did you watch for the first time this year ?
Where does "classic" starts and where does it end ? Those felt classic to me :
Labyrinth, 1986 (loved it)
Pather Panchali, 1955 (was a bit long but interesting, need to watch the rest of the serie)
Chungking Express, 1994 (meh, it's one of my best friend's favourite movie she still hates me for not liking it)
The Prestige, 2006 (watching it was ok, and then the more I thought about it and about Nolan the more I hated them both)
Old Boy, 2003 (great, I wish plot twists weren't so easy to predict to me)
Sherlock Jr., 1924 (love me some Buster Keaton)
Burlesque, 2010 (I understand, if you're 12. But my friend who showed me this was wrong : they are not the most beautiful pretty princesses ever. Bonus points for Cher, Stanley Tucci and Alan Cumming.)
Bay of Angels, 1963 (so close, but the rythm is off. Sorry Jacques and Michel, I promise I do not love you less for this)
Le Sabotier du Val de Loire, 1956 (one of Demy's first ever movie. Made me emotional. It's simple and beautiful just like I like it.)
Model Shop, 1969 (yes I went and watched half Demy's filmography this year. I think I didn't like the american setting in that one. It felt wrong, sorry)
The Red Shoes, 1948 (love love love give me more surreal fairy tales movie like this or Donkey Skin or Beauty and the Beast)
The Old Gun, 1975 (probably one of my favourite movies from this year. So beautiful, so emotional. The people asks for Philippe Noiret tricking nazis Home Alone style in his castle in southern France to finally use a flamethrower on them, and the people shall receive)
The Band Wagon, 1953 (sadly don't have much memories from it. I do like Fred Astaire but all of his movies get mixed up in my brain)
Meet Me in St Louis, 1944 (CLANG CLANG CLANG WENT THE TROLLEYYYYYY)
Marius, 1931 (just feels like home, I love Marcel Pagnol so much)
Does Point Break count ? That was fun
Red Sun, 1971 (how can you get the most perfect casting and the most amazing plot and end up with such a boring movie is beyond me)
Scarface, 1983 (I realise it is well made and well played, I also was bored out of my mind during the entire movie. If I hear the boys quote the French translation to each others one more time, I will lose it. Oyé sapapaya included.)
Alien, 1979 (great ! I wish I would have liked it more, but I still had a really good time)
Cinderella, 1997 (fairy godmother Whitney Houston was one of the hightlights of my year. Also Paolo Montalbán. Sorry I'm just a girl.)
Charade, 1963 (cute ! Bit long, very funny, Audrey Hepburn my love)
(500) Days of Summer, 2009 (I understand why people might love it. It's great, didn't touch me as much though)
Same Old Song, 1997 (frustrating and disappointing, but fun concept and great casting)
Nosferatu the Vampyre, 1979 (looooved it. Thank you yet again for your hard work Herr Herzog)
Thank you for asking !! ❤️

There wasn't any going out to look at the stars. Not when it was raining hard enough to turn the city to a blur. No problem, though. Virote was fine being draped over Adam in bed, wearing a silk slip that barely had a hold on his body. It was a movie night and Chungking Express was one of his favorite films, but he couldn't keep his eyes off Adam. Couldn't keep his arms from around him ❝I like you... So much,❞ he said. ❝I daydream about you. Morningdream about you. Eveningdream about you.❞
Morning Dreams
Vi and Adam
Too much weight today, Adam decided. Too much weight, too many reps, too long a run. Some combination of all three impounded upon a week of too much. The second work-out in the afternoon with the extra dose of cardio totally blew him out. After a strong shot of whiskey, Adam was physically, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, religiously, personally, dead to the world. An ache settled in the base of his shoulders. Spread through his hips and thighs, then bottomed-out in his feet. Even his toes hurt. A hot shower dispersed some of the pain but failed to unravel the knot. Like Adam was a clockwork toy wound-up a little too tight. When he awoke in the morning the worst would come to reckon. Rolling-out of bed, he’d grumble with regret, and yet he still wouldn’t miss a set. Eat chicken for breakfast like he was supposed to and set out for a run. Adam wouldn’t take off the pounds from the bar. He wouldn’t shorten his distance. Couldn’t say why. Adam was training. Couldn’t say for what. Just training, pushing limits, getting faster, getting stronger, getting leaner, and maybe a little meaner. Less body fat, more muscle, and it would all work, for something.
Something that he was working for.
Because as fast as Adam was now, the champion was faster.
Adam grunted, a low noise of acknowledgement situated deep in his chest. He shifted and dug his elbows into the mattress. The mountain of pillows piled behind his back and shoulders susurrate as he leveraged himself up. Adam grew-up on old box springs but Vi lived in style and on comfy beds. Which did nothing for motivating Adam. Rain pattered against the roof and streaked the windows. Shadows flickered on the far wall. The movie played on, ignored, on the silver screen. A succession of colors and images, blurred by his heavy eyes. It was the film Vi liked so much--they’d see it again, at some point. Hopefully, Vi didn’t want a plot synopsis later. Adam yawned and he splayed his hand against Vi’s back. Thin arms wrapped around his mid-section with shocking strength. Vice grips of two-fifty pound men were weaker than Vi’s hold. There was no thinking about going anywhere or doing anything. Which was fine, perfectly fine. Even if Adam’s heart ticked with thoughts that were not present in his current exhaustion. He dipped his chin and pressed his nose against Vi’s hair. Smelled shampoo and flowers, something sweet, fruity, tangled with the natural musk of oils, sweat, and people smell.
“What about night dreams?” He murmured. “Twilight dreams, dawn dreams, Midday Dreams, uh, shit, high noon dreams.” Kinda made him think of like, an old Western stand-off where instead of drawing weapons, the combatants had to imagine up something creative first. Which was an idea so dumb he found it funny. Adam chuckled, “You must have boring dreams if I’m running through ‘em, Vi.”
The other night, Adam had a dream that Ultra Tito got out and he had to spend like three hours looking for his stupid dog. Even put posters up on the telephone poles. Except Adam wasn’t in the plain suburban he called home. Adam was marching through the neighborhood an old friend from grade school lived in. The one where he fell off a bike and skinned his knee to high hell. And also, old Jimmy Valiant was there, providing words of wisdom Adam forgot. Something, something, about taking the recycling out. Shit, he should call Jimmy-- and take the recycling out. Adam was having dreams about the fossil that trained him, recycling, and his dog. Or, maybe it counted that his thoughts were drifting a little too often to movie night with Vi. When he was in the middle of dead lifts and bench presses. Damn inconvenient ‘cause he kept losing count. And he wasn’t fixating on the cinema.
Adam played his fingers through Vi’s hair. Black locks like silk, iridescent, refracting pink, blue, red, from the TV screen. Vi, warm and draped over his chest. In retrospect, Adam had no clue how he got here. It kinda happened like it was supposed to. Which was crazy because Adam had no clue where he was supposed to be or even doing. Stuck on this Island of his own making, all bridges burnt. Yet, here was Vi, who arrived by some miraculous and confounding design, draped across his chest like he kinda belonged there. Actually, Vi’s chest now, property of Vi. Like, seriously, how the hell did Vi get here? Adam slid back down against the pillows, sore body protesting even the slightest muscle twitch. He used his hands to adjust Vi’s weight so he could breath easier and then closed his eyes. A couple wiggles and Adam was well burrowed in the pillows.
“We should have... grits, in the morning,” Adam muttered. Not apart of his diet but whatever, cheat day came like once a month and he was feeling homesick.  Make ‘em with milk and salt and black pepper. “With, bacon.”
Adam had the feint hope, as he drifted asleep, that he dreamed of bacon. Or Vi, who was definitely better than bacon.  Not titles he’d never win or oceans to broad to build bridges.

2, 8, 11, 14, 18, 32, 38, 20, 40, 43, 50 ?
2. what’s your favorite candy? - answered!
8. favorite fanfic trope? - oh geez, um, this is kind of a boring choice but probably just Friends to Lovers? like, fics where character relationships are built up and explored in a realistic way that builds off of friendship and actual chemistry as opposed to like. ‘our eyes met across the room and suddenly we’re madly in love with no buildup or reasoning for such.’ Also like, monster girl* aus that are heavy on magical realism and stuff. Also all of the fluffiest fluff forever. …..also i wouldnt call it a fanfic trope or anything like that but give me all of the fics with realistic and healthy consensual polyamory pls and thx (that arent an excuse for terrible male gaze-y porn)
11. dinner dates or brunch dates? - Probably brunch! followed by spending the day together and lots of cuddles. though a dinner date and then hanging out and watching anime or cartoons together sounds lovely too
14. favorite candle scent? - answered! (but another scent i generally like is just vanilla)
18. chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet? - ….that greatly depends on both what specifically is flavored and how dark the chocolate is. Super dark chocolate is always wonderful, with regard to ice cream i generally prefer vanilla, and with regard to cake chocolate and red velvet are both great and which i prefer depends on my mood.
32. favorite romcom (or any romantic movie)? - i dunno if i really have any favorite romcoms and i’m honestly not a huge movie person in general, but The Shape of Water is incredibly good, and i also like Chungking Express, 5 Centimeters per Second, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (though not particularly for the romantic parts), Let the Right One In (though that kiinda stretches the definition of a ‘romantic’ movie), uh… Revolutionary Girl Utena: the Movie? ……the live action adaptation of Lovely Complex??
38. what’s your OTP? - idk im just way too gay and ship all the characters of a given series together at once in a huge poly cuddlepile
20. sweetest romantic memory? - probably taking my gf shopping at the thrift store and trying on clothes together and showing her the dumb tacky knicknacks i want all of
40. coffee, hot chocolate, or tea? - 90% of the time tea, every once in a while when im in the mood hot chocolate
43. favorite ABBA song? - …..I dont know if ive deliberately listened to enough abba to actually have a specific favorite song but i like most of them?
50. what’s your dreamhouse? - one that contains cute friends/my gf to hang out with and cuddle and a huge bed and a huge bathtub and a cabinet to put all my teapots/leaves in

today i think therapy went well. finally! i cannot seem to stop talking about jo to my therapist though. seems like it’s the thing that weighs on me most. they mentioned that the way i talk about him is as if i’m already grieving his loss. and i thought that was a very astute observation. first time i’ve felt genuinely seen by my therapist. i think i might’ve dreamed about emily last night, or maybe sam. it didn’t pain me in the morning. i wonder if it’ll be like that with jo one day. i hope it never is. i do worry, often, that i’ll never connect with anyone the same as i do with jo. luna and gabby seem to be exceptions – two people who i genuinely love and enjoy outside of missing jo. but every time i make a new friend, all i can think about is how much i wish jo and i were talking. and when i think about enjoying someone’s company romantically, all i can think about is how much i wish it could be jo & i. how it’ll never compare, & it’ll never be the same, and i fear i will never get over it. i feel a little silly for mourning what hasn’t yet died. but i know there’s some truth to my pain, and it kills me a little. it’s going to be alright! it is. i just don’t know when that’ll be. in other news i’m almost finished with my wong kar-wai retrospective binge! maybe i should buy an ifc membership tbh….. they show so many good movies and i MISS feeling captured like that by movies. seeing chungking express on the big screen was mildly life-changing for me. today’s wkw film, as tears go by, was really good. like less so in a technical way but it was funny and it was action-packed and i really enjoyed myself. but also soooo heartbreaking. first one to make me cry. i’m 18 books into my 25 books for the year goal! with any luck i will have to increase it to 30. i have very high hopes. i love reading! i’ve really missed reading. i will say i’ve been kinda bored by the books i’ve read recently. i’m reading the exhibition of persephone q right now and i AM really liking it but it’s still not one of those, edge of your seat, can’t put it down, finished in an afternoon kind of book. in other news i’m going to buy tickets to new orleans & washington soon! i just need to get in touch with gabby about it so i can narrow down specific details. need 2 make sure i can stay with them. jamie’s been staying at my apartment for the past few days, and i’m beginning to get a little stir-crazy but i’m trying to remember that it’s not about me! and that they need the company and someone to keep an eye on them right now. we’re going to watch when harry met sally tonight, and i think i’ll either make cajun fries or more pasta 😬 i’m a pasta bitch it’s so EASY and sooooooooooo so tasty. but also i BOUGHT potatoes i should cook em. i dunno. i’m off work tomorrow which is exciting! never off work on a friday. maybe i’ll make fries then. should probably get my mom’s recipe for em anyways.

Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021)
Source (left to right): doblu, filmlinc, potentialfilms
[No spoiler]
How many anthologies have I watched? I don’t know. I only remember Chungking Express, have seen it several times and haven’t been bored yet. I love both stories there. Moving on to another film, I just watched Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy and it gave me a new experience. Consists of three unparalleled love stories, this is not an ordinary romance film. There are so many meaningful dialogues and as the audience I couldn’t predict everyone’s reactions from those conversations. They made me say “Wait, what?!” several times.
I enjoyed the first part, hated the second part, fell in love with the last part. Such a rollercoaster ride, kudos to Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
