@pillowxtalk clicked ♥ for a starter!
Ben reached across the outdoor table to pluck up a pair of french fries off the other’s tray, quickly stuffing them in his mouth before Taeil had the opportunity to complain. He’d flash the man a grin that probably should have been guiltier, but it was clear he was unrepentant in his theft.
“The new single is sounding really good — when do you all release?” he picked up his drink and shook the cup a little to test how much was still left; enough to slurp the straw a few good times.

Ben gave Taeil a flat-expressioned side-eye as he revealed Ben's great 'secret' to the chat. He wouldn't ruin the fun by saying 'if it was going to happen it would have happened by now,' and instead feigned a chuckle.
"Welp... ya caught me," he joked, taking another drink of wine to avoid saying something too ridiculous that might come around to bite the both of them in the ass later. It would be a bigger chore than he realized not speaking to Taeil the way he usually did — all inappropriate jokes and immature behavior that neither of them could really get away with in their daily lives; truly terrible influences on one another. Who let them do this again?
He was thankful when the subject changed to holiday plans, nodding as his gaze drifted toward the ceiling, trying to recall their schedule. "Mm, yeah. G1 Entertainment invited us to share their Holiday stage with a few other groups and couple of their own — FenIX, is one of them I think. Then we're filming an interview with Jenni Choi for her show New Beats," he turned then to address the chat that had tuned in.
"Please come and watch if you get the chance, we'd be really grateful," he bowed his head politely, hoping even if none of them enjoyed UNA1's music they might at least be moved by his earnestness.
"When's the last time you got to see your family?" he turned his attention to Taeil again. It was no secret that the idol life didn't always leave as much time for family as most would like — he himself had not seen his family in close to nine months.
Taeil was glad he had managed to become friends with someone, that was part of the industry that didn't have the perfect image. UNA1 just like his group Renegades wasn't afraid to simply show they were human and that they had human reactions to things. And he had been rooting for Ben and his group that things would die down and they could continue as a group. If it hadn't worked out he would have suggested that they joined the label he was part of.
The young male let out an amused chuckle in reply to his friend's words and then gave him a cheeky smile after they clinked their glasses. "Cheers." He said before sticking his tongue out at Ben in a playful manner. "I'm a cuddler so if you refuse to cuddle I need to huge the blankets or the pillow." Taeil teased the other before glancing at the screen, giving the camera a mischievous grin. "He is afraid to get addicted to sleeping in the same bed as I am."
Next he took a sip of the wine while reading through the chat, a hum coming from him. He had his phases during which he enjoyed having a glass of mine and the other times he rather drank a beer or other alcohol beverages. It wouldn't be the first time for the idol to get drunk during a live, but for the time being he didn't plan to. But while being with a friend not always things went like he had planned and he would just go with the flow.
As Ben asked him a question he turned his head to look at him. "I plan to go visit my family and big brother for one day. Other than that I'll try to spend some time with a friend so if you need some company I'll be your guy." Taeil said and then took another sip of his wine. "Yes, my group is still set to perform for one of the new years program. Also thank you for wanting to watch it with your friends as support." He smiled and then turned his attention back to the other male. "And will your group hit the stage too?"

hi im trying to learn more abt north korean refugees from the korean war or more generally conditions in north korea during the war and its been like...rly challenging to find resources since the search engines will conflate them with defectors and what resources i do find tend to be "there were north koreans refugees. there were alot...a lot of them died...some did not" and not about why they fled or what was happening in north kroea at the time. i can make inferences from what i do know, but i was wondering if you had any resources or recommendations on where i could look since ive found ur dprk resources super informative & helpful in the past!
hello!
during the war, there was not yet a concept of a korean person being from the north or the south and that's probably a reason why you can't find specific resources if you're searching in that direction. generally, refugees fled to manchuria, china, russia, and japan. they tried to farm in these regions, tried to become educated and learn skills and crafts, and/or were part of anticolonial organizing efforts. the migrations to these areas began much before the war and there were sizable korean populations in these regions as early as the late 1800s and the 1910s.
a notable example is find very interesting is that there were enough communist koreans in russia and climbing the political ranks of the government at the beginning of the 20th century that in 1937, stalin had every korean person rounded up and sent to central asia (kazakhstan, uzbekistan, etc) under suspicion of them being japanese spies. which i personally think inspired the US to create japanese internment camps.
my understanding is that the borders to manchuria and china were not heavily enforced before the war and military occupation of the area so it was very common for people in the northern areas of the korean peninsula to travel back and forth for trade and live across the border for agricultural conditions.
for wartime conditions in the region, the northern half of the peninsula was bombed more severely than the southern half and the southernmost tip of the land is the only area where the trees on mountains are the original ones and not newly planted after the war (usually by the park chunghee administration). agriculture is more difficult in the north because of the terrain and the majority of the flat and fertile farming soil is in the jeolla province so the north was more likely to develop communist style industry, so the U.S. focused on flattening any man made infrastructure in the area. many people fled across borders and many people hid in caves in the mountains because the peninsula is very mountainous with many caves. for resources, i don't have anything more specific than what's already in my dprk tag! check the dprk study guide for further reading.
overall, many people fled korea from the late 1800s to after the war in the 1950s because of japanese labor exploitation and cultural persecution, artificially produced famine conditions because of japanese resource exploitation and then the effect of the U.S. bombings on the environment, and the sheer death and destruction of the bombings and ground military troops.
hope this is helpful and lmk if u have more specific questions i can answer!

"i don't track the times they come in and out, boss." comes the retort, perhaps a tad more snarky than needed. rex and reza are responsible for their own hours, she's not going to police them on it. if they don't want to work, that's on them, they'll have to deal with the consequences from chung-hee. plus, she already didn't like her coworkers much, she wasn't going to lie to cover for their sorry asses. in fact, it might be amusing if they get chewed out by their boss.
"i was just finishing up anyway." with that, she closes the hood of the car she was working on and tosses the dirty rag into a bucket near her station. there isn't anyone waiting to have their car worked on, so no need to keep her tools out either. she methodically puts them away, then closes the garage door. "closing up early? i guess that makes sense, considering only one of the staff members is still here."
He raised his hand and looked at his watched, before cursing under his breath in his native tongue, his hands on his hip as he shifted his weight from side to side. “It’s not even lunch time yet.” Chung-Hee knew there was no point in grumbling when both his workers were already gone, but he couldn’t simply contain his annoyance, especially when it came to Reza. Not after he learned what went on between that bastard with his Chae. Chae might be an adult, but that didn’t stop him from fretting over the young witch as he always did.
Chung-Hee turned to Logan, brows furrowed together and lips pressed into a thin line. “Nothing.” He then heaved a heavy sigh and shook his head. “Are you done with that?” He pointed at the car Logan was working on. “If you are then come inside. Make sure you clean yourself up and close the garage door.” There wasn’t much traffic today, so he figured it wouldn’t hurt. He hoped that Rex would know to stay out of trouble, though looking at those two’s interaction so far, he doubted Rex was any better.
Gods helped him.

( @dollieour continued from x )
He might have been persuaded to change up his tactics except for the hint of teasing in the other’s voice — the chuckle causing his cheeks to warm both from embarrassment and fondness for the patient guest who let him toy with those luxurious strands.
“You should put the rest of those chips in your pretty mouth and let me work,” he retorted in joking petulance, giving Juniper’s hair a playful tug before leaning down and kissing him on the crown of the head.
He returned to the task at hand with renewed determination, glancing up only now and then to the TV droning in the background.
“How was training this week? I wanted to stop by yesterday but Dae needed me to re-record a part.”

Ben let out a sheepish laugh, his chin dipping toward his chest as color flooded up his neck and into his cheeks, waving his hands in denial as he shook his head, "don't be silly — your singing is wonderful. Ties it all together!" he reassured her with a warm smile.
It had been a fun experience, collaborating with her, the first he'd done on his own outside of UNA1, and he felt sure it was a solid piece if for no other reason than that she worked so hard on it. He'd only showed up to add a little mixup to the track.
At her offer he considered for a moment before placing his hands together in a gentle plea, "I'd love some water, if it's not too much trouble. I can come with you and get it myself if you want."

"At this point I'm convinced you should rap the whole song, we don't need my singing," Gyunghui joked. Known for being rather quiet around other public figures, she could open up once some time had passed. Fortunately, their love for music did the rest. "Would you like something to drink? We've been here for hours after all."

The Korean "Comfort Women": Movement for Redress - Chunghee Sarah Soh
Asian Survey , Dec., 1996, Vol. 36, No. 12 (Dec., 1996), pp. 1226-1240
The article "The Korean Comfort Women: Movement for Redress" by Chunghee Sarah Son summarizes the whole crisis historically. By providing the fact that the Korean women were drafted, based on an actual victim's experiences, the author denies the claim by the Japanese government that the young ladies from Korea "volunteered" themselves.
Sarah also notes that "Japan has adopted the tactic of waiting until the death of the aged litigants and that Koreans cannot win in a bilateral deal with superpower Japan." Therefore, some communities in South Korea strongly want international support, especially from the United Nations and the US in order to stop Japan's irresponsibility.
In addition, the article provided me new information that previously, it was professional Japanese prostitutes that were acting as the "comfort women". However, in order to prevent sexually infectious diseases, Japan decided to use foreigners. Here, my intuitive thoughts led me to the moral issue regarding both the Koreans and the Japanese. Is it right to use foreigners as slaves just to protect a country’s citizens?

PERSONALIDADE:

He had returned home late to what he thought had been an empty house — no Minjun sneaking in the last few minutes of game time he could muster after dinner before being ushered off to bed by his older brother. And no older brother either, he thought at first until he dropped his bags off in his bedroom and heard the shower running in the other room.
Ben could smell it from here... that sweet scent of vanilla and strawberries that clung to every fiber of his being and wafted in ways that could be both soothing and intoxicating depending on his mood. Before he left he'd entertained the idea of slipping an article of the other's clothing, or perhaps a towel, into his luggage to carry that scent with him, but he thought it might pose too many questions from the other Alphas in the group.
Not wishing to startle Daehyun while he showered, Ben decided to check in on Minjun's room, finding it uninhabited and feeling just a little disappointed not to see that earnest, beaming grin with its missing baby tooth and mischievous giggle that always came when he knew he'd been caught awake reading comics when he should be sleeping.
He shut the door and sighed wistfully, plodding bare-footed to the kitchen, pulling open the fridge and getting himself a drink before sitting down on the couch and turning on a bit of mindless entertainment while he awaited Dae's return.
He wouldn't wait long, glancing back over his shoulder as if by premonition as he took a drink from the bottle in his hand, catching sight of Daehyun, damp and fresh-faced, wearing one of his large baggy shirts. His expression shifted, something clouding his gaze as it took the male in briefly, swallowing his drink reflexively and offering him a smile as he patted the couch next to him.
"Of course. Always welcome," he reassured him warmly, shifting a little and tugging at his pantlegs to become more comfortable in his seat.
"Sorry I didn't tell you I was home — didn't want to startle you in the shower like some crazy slasher," he chuckled, draping his arm along the back of the couch with a tilt of his head. "Where's Min?"
( @dollieour )
it still felt strange to have time alone. with the transition to a new school, minjun had seamlessly integrated himself into a circle of friends who had invited him to a sleepover, and now daehyun had too much free time on his hands. having already attended to the various chores around the house (cleaning, cooking, and laundering) he found himself at a loose end. despite ben's reassurances that such tasks weren't necessary, daehyun couldn't help but feel like he needed to do it. not out of obligation but more as a silent gesture of gratitude towards ben. after all, it was the least he could do. as he stepped out of the warmth of the shower, droplets cascading down his bare skin, daehyun's mind drifted to ben. had he returned home yet ? the thought lingered as he slipped into a baggy t-shirt, the fabric wrapping him in a comforting embrace. it wasn't his, that much was certain, but it carried ben's scent ⸻ which felt strangely comforting, especially since he hadn't been able to see him in the last two days. descending the stairs with measured steps, daehyun found the living room bathed in the pale glow of the tv screen, and there, seated amidst the gentle flicker of light, he found him. " . . . do you mind if i join ? " daehyun's voice was soft as he gestured toward the vacant space on the couch beside ben. @star-paths

there's a brand new kim hyesoon article in the new yorker and i'm so excited about it she's probably my favorite korean writer. being able to read her work that hasn't been translated is such a big motivator for me learning to read literary korean she just resonates with me so deeply.
she's a prolific writer whose career is 5 decades long and tracks modern korean history from being an editor under the park chunghee dictatorship to being a foundational voice in the south korean literary scene and the south korean feminist movement.
korean shamanism as a site of gender politics and gendered power for women and queer people, the princess bari myth as a powerful symbol, the building blocks of the korean language taken apart and rearranged as an artform. it's all things that i've come across and pursued as sources of inspiration and power in my own writing.
