The Dover Boys at Pimento University; or, The Rivals of Roquefort Hall (1942) - Dir. Chuck Jones
In recent years, the cartoon most commonly known as The Dover Boys has reached a level of popularity that is fairly unusual for a cartoon from over 80 years ago, becoming a fairly well-known meme and even receiving a lavishly produced fan re-animation. I think in no small part this is due not only because of its release into the public domain, but for its irreverence, its unique animation style and of course, the patented hollering of Mel Blanc's vocal styling.
The Dover Boys parodies the now long defunct "Rover Boys" series of youth novels, a series of books written by Edward Stratemeyer under the pseudonym Arthur M. Winfield. Similarly to the short, the books feature three young students of a military boarding school as they cause pranks and mischief for authorities and criminals alike. Though long since passed from public awareness now, the Rover Boys books sold over a million copies and left an indelible mark on American pop culture at the time.
Despite its recent popularity, information on the production of The Dover Boys is surprisingly hard to find these days, likely due to the fact that it was produced fairly quickly and cheaply. Allegedly, Chuck Jones was expected to produce 10 cartoons a year and had "run out" of good ideas by the end of 1942. Thus, The Dover Boys was animated in order to be made as efficiently as possible, most notably through the use of an animation technique called "smear frames".
In order to "cheat" the effect of a rapid movement of a character, simulating motion blur in a real camera shot, characters were smeared between key poses to make pose to pose animation seem more lively and snappy, utilized in this cartoon through dry-brushing. Although this technique existed in cartoons in the 1930s, The Dover Boys was the first cartoon which used it so notably and frequently. This, combined with other cost cutting measures such as long panning shots of the stylized painted backgrounds by uncredited artist Gene Fleury with no visible characters, and the "sweet Dora Standpipe", the Dover Boys' supposedly dainty object of affection, whose slim-fitting dress causes her to glide comically through her scenes, conveniently not requiring expensive-to-animate walk cycles. This reduced style is now known as "limited animation", and while controversial at the time is now widely utilized by most modern animated productions to help reduce costly animation budgets.
My personal favourite aspect of the cartoon, however, is its preposterous and hilariously animated villain: Dan Backslide, described by the unctuous narrator as a "coward, bully, cad and thief". Visually based on Warner Bros animator Ken Harris, his wiry frame, slicked hair, effeminate cigarette holder and inexplicably green skin make every scene he is in a delight to behold. It may also be my absolute favourite Mel Blanc performance in all of Looney Tunes history, and considering the breadth of the man's career that's really saying something. There's just something about the particular cadence of his screams that put me in hysterics every time.
youtube
However, reaction to the cartoon at the time was slightly less glowing than modern views. According to Jones, Warner Bros. studio executives were displeased with his innovative animation techniques, stating "They hated it, and if they hadn't been block-booking theatres, they would have withheld it and thrown me out." Their attempts to fire him were curtailed, however, by a labour shortage stemming from the ongoing war at the time, and so Jones continued directing for Warner Bros until 1962.
In modern years, The Dover Boys is regarded as being hugely influential for its unique, stylized look and innovative animation techniques, and it was included in the 50 Greatest Cartoons of All Time. Rediscovered by a younger generation after it was released into the public domain through the internet, it quickly became a brief online sensation for its bizarre non-sequitur humour and rapid-fire pacing. In 2018, a collaboration of independent animators reanimated the entire cartoon as a celebration of its 76th Anniversary. Though viewed as a relatively disposable parody at the time, it has since gone on to long outlive the subject of its mockery.

Otis Blackwell
Otis Blackwell (February 16, 1931 – May 6, 2002) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist, whose work influenced rock and roll. His compositions include "Fever", recorded by Little Willie John; "Great Balls of Fire" and "Breathless", recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis; "Don't Be Cruel", "All Shook Up" and "Return to Sender" (with Winfield Scott), recorded by Elvis Presley; and "Handy Man", recorded by Jimmy Jones.
Biography
Blackwell was born in Brooklyn, New York. He learned to play the piano as a child and grew up listening to both R&B and country music.
His first success was winning a local talent contest ("Amateur Night") at the Apollo Theater, in Harlem, in 1952. This led to a recording contract with RCA and then with Jay-Dee. His first release was his own composition "Daddy Rolling Stone", which became a favorite in Jamaica, where it was recorded by Derek Martin. The song later became part of the Who's mod repertoire. Enjoying some early recording and performing success, he found his first love was songwriting and by 1955 had settled into the groove that he would ride for decades. His first successes as a songwriter came in 1956, when Little Willie John's R&B hit with the sultry "Fever" was an even bigger pop success for Peggy Lee, and "Don't Be Cruel" began a highly profitable association with Elvis Presley.
Blackwell was one of the leading African-American figures of early rock and roll, although he was not well known by the public. His own records never cracked the Top 40, yet he wrote million-selling songs for Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dee Clark and others. He also recruited other songwriters to write for Presley, such as Winfield Scott.
In the liner notes of Elvis' Golden Records (1958), Anne Fulchino, of RCA, wrote,
While sipping coffee, Steve Sholes pulled out a demonstration record of 'Don't Be Cruel' and told Elvis it was a new song written by Otis Blackwell, whom Elvis had long admired as a rhythm and blues artist. It took just a few bars to convince Presley that it was a perfect song for him, and he decided to cut it right away. Presley learned the song within minutes—he had an inherent musical sense—and in short order a great master was put on tape.It isn't often that the title of a song will create a whole new expression in Americana. 'All Shook Up' did exactly that. Youngsters and adults alike have made the phrase a common part of everyday usage. The background to the song itself is a rather interesting one. Since the huge success of 'Don't Be Cruel', Elvis had been anxious to record another song from the pen of Otis Blackwell. Eventually, Blackwell came around with 'All Shook Up' (first recorded by David Hill on Aladdin). Presley wasn't completely satisfied with the song, and with Blackwell's consent re-wrote part of the lyrics. Thus, as co-writer as well as artist, Presley produced his ninth consecutive gold record, his first in the year 1957.
During an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, Blackwell said he never met Presley in person. When he was having a contract dispute with his publishing company, he also wrote under the white-sounding pen name John Davenport. Blackwell composed more than a thousand songs, garnering worldwide sales of close to 200 million records. Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, asked Blackwell to appear in the Presley movie Girls! Girls! Girls!, for which he had written "Return to Sender", but a superstition about meeting Presley kept him from accepting.
In 1956, Blackwell gave "Don't Be Cruel" to friend Frankie Valli's group, the Four Lovers, but as they were recording it he asked to take it back and in turn gave it to the up-and-coming Presley. In exchange for this song he gave them "You're the Apple of My Eye", which became a chart hit for the Four Lovers (Billboard number 64). The song was performed on Ed Sullivan's television show that same year and was probably instrumental in at least shaping events for the group to eventually becoming the Four Seasons. A shortened version of "You're the Apple of My Eye" is also featured in the Broadway show "Jersey Boys".
As the tide of rock and roll receded, Blackwell recorded R&B songs for numerous labels, including Atlantic, MGM and Epic. In later years he was in semi-retirement, making only occasional live appearances.
In the 1980s, Blackwell toured and recorded with the Smithereens as his backing band for both live shows and studio recordings. The partnership produced two self-funded albums, "Let's Talk About Us" and "From the Beginning," which were released independently on Blackwell's ROC-CO imprint.
In 1991, Blackwell was paralyzed by a stroke. Three years later, Shanachie released the album Brace Yourself! A Tribute to Otis Blackwell, containing 15 songs written by Blackwell and recorded by the likes of Kris Kristofferson ("All Shook Up"), Blondie's Debbie Harry ("Don't Be Cruel"), the Smithereens ("Let's Talk About Us"), Graham Parker ("Paralyzed"), and Ronnie Spector ("Brace Yourself").
Blackwell died of a heart attack in 2002, in Nashville, Tennessee, and was interred in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, in that city.
Awards and recognitions
Otis Blackwell was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986 and in 1991 into the National Academy of Popular Music's Songwriters Hall of Fame. Blackwell's crowning moment came in the late 1980s when the Black Rock Coalition, a prominent organization of black rock musicians, led by Vernon Reid, the lead guitarist of the band, Living Colour, held a tribute for him at the Prospect Park Bandshell in his native Brooklyn. Many prominent musicians and singers took part including Blackwell himself, who performed an assortment of his best songs, including "One Broken Heart for Sale," "Back Trail," "Don't Be Cruel" and "Daddy Rolling Stone."
Blackwell was named one of the 2010 recipients of Ahmet Ertegun Award in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This category encompasses those who primarily work behind the scenes in the music industry.
Legacy
Blackwell was one of the greatest R&B songwriters of all time. His songwriting style is as uniquely identifiable as that of Leiber and Stoller, Chuck Berry, or Willie Dixon and helped redefine popular music in America in the 1950s. This is true even though he often collaborated with such partners as Winfield Scott, Eddie Cooley, and Jack Hammer. Blackwell was one of the most important innovators who helped invent the musical vocabulary of rock and roll at its very beginning. His works have been recorded by a host of major artists, including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Brown, the Who, Johnny Thunders, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, the Judds, Carl Perkins and Peggy Lee, among numerous others. At other times in his career, Blackwell was also successful as a record producer, having helped turn out hits for artists as diverse as Connie Francis, Mahalia Jackson and Sal Mineo.
Songs
Songs composed by Blackwell, with the performers who made them famous, include the following:
"All Shook Up" (Elvis Presley)
"Don't Be Cruel" (Elvis Presley); inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002
"Fever" as "John Davenport" with Eddie Cooley (Peggy Lee, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998; Little Willie John, Madonna, the McCoys, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Over the Rhine, and numerous other performers).

"Breathless" (Jerry Lee Lewis, X)
"Let's Talk About Us" (Jerry Lee Lewis)
"Hey Little Girl" (Dee Clark)

Ravens snag Trevon Moehrig, a safety who can do it all, with the 31st pick
Brett Rojo-USA TODAY Sports
The hawking safety would be an immediate contributor to an already talented secondary.
With the 31st pick in the 2021 SB Nation mock draft, Baltimore Beatdown selects Trevon Moehrig, safety, TCU. Moehrig joins Terrace Marshall Jr. to round out the Ravens’ first round.
Moehrig is the perfect “but they needed a ______” pick. In this scenario, the Ravens already rounded out their receiver room, fulfilling one perceived need. Ignoring edge rushers and the offensive line is a bold move, as the Ravens don’t pick again until the 94th pick. However, the Ravens have hosted Alejandro Villanueva and Justin Houston, with strong rumors that at least one will be signed after the May 3 deadline for the compensatory formula. If those deals are in place, the Ravens will get to prove their affinity for taking the best player available. Moehrig certainly fits the description, as you’ll struggle to find many pundits with a low grade on the rangy, intelligent, playmaking safety.
This move puts off Marlon Humphrey in 2017 vibes. The Ravens already had corners. Many thought O.J. Howard or Reuben Foster made more sense. Humphrey felt like a luxury rather than a need. However, many failed to see the long-term plan. Humphrey fit the press man, play the receiver and disrupt the catch point, aggressive play style that the Ravens love in their corners. Fast forward to 2021. Marlon Humphrey is a bonafide star cornerback with an All-Pro on his resume and a $100 million contract keeping him in Baltimore for the foreseeable future.
Moehrig, a former four-star cornerback who had offers from Georgia and Texas among other big-time programs, has the best cover skills of any safety in this class. He didn’t test well at TCU’s pro day, with reports coming out that he was at “80%” after he had a flare up in his back.
Considering he ran a 4.52 40-yard dash with a 1.59 10-yard split at 80%, he still recorded relatively impressive numbers. Moehrig’s athleticism is never an issue on tape. He’s a tried and true technician, who excels in off coverage from split safety alignments with adequate range as the single high safety as well. He’s the type of defender who makes a receiver who runs a 4.3 look like they run a 4.6. Moehrig is clearly a film junkie, who almost looks bored at times when he easily runs receivers routes for them.
He possesses fluid hips, precise and calm feet to transition at the stem. When receivers define their break, he cleanly initiated contact without being sloppy, thwarting their ability to separate. The former Horned Frog, similar to Marlon Humphrey, has pneumatic strikes into the catch point, often forcing incompletions that would’ve been caught without his strikes.
Trevon anticipates, breaks, stays in phase and undercuts passes frequently. His ball production will translate to the NFL.
Hey! You! Yeah, I’m talking to you, big head. You’re the fool who doesn’t think Trevon Moehrig is an absolute baller. Here are all the plays Trevon Moehrig made against Oklahoma in 2020... ... ... ... ... In the first half... pic.twitter.com/WMDXCAqcqj

My last 3 safety 1's 2018 Minkah Fitzpatrick 2019 Juan Thornhill 2020 Antione Winfield Jr See a trend? I love safeties who can really cover. Trevon Moehrig is trending that way for me. Love how he challenges his self in space. Watch this next "catch" rep. pic.twitter.com/wKObnTdLZk

#TCU safety Trevon Moehrig (6-2, 202, Jr.) is arguably the most versatile safety in the country. Has shown that he can roam as a centerfielder on the roof, dependable in man coverage and a reliable tackler coming downhill. Also a constant turnover creator. pic.twitter.com/M5M6c2baxS

I promise I'm still watching Trevon Moehrig lol. Nothing special here, just a really solid rep against the run. pic.twitter.com/fuaBUoHcBj

No. 1 safety in the NFL Draft: Trevon Moehrig has made 28 plays on the ball since 2019 Five more than any other Power 5 safety pic.twitter.com/ArprDPheGJ

Moehrig is about as solid of a safety prospect as they come. He’s reliable in run fits from either alignment. His open field tackle ability is reliable, while not spectacular. The former corner’s ball production is consistently prolific. You don’t see many highs or lows in Moehrig’s game. He looks more or less the same each and every week. His production in the first half matches his production in the second half. He has the physicality to engage with tight ends and stay in phase, with the change of direction and intelligence to mirror slot receivers while detailing them.
Moehrig is a safe bet. While he might not be an explosive hitter, he gets the job done time and time again. Moehrig consistently communicates pre-snap and seemed to have major responsibility to align his teammates. There are very few holes to poke in his game.

With Chuck Clark as the only Ravens safety under contract in 2022, Baltimore absolutely needs to address the position this week. Moehrig provides a long-term partner for Clark. While DeShon Elliott could still sign an extension, Moehrig would excel in the Ravens’ man-heavy, blitz-heavy defense. He would provide the range and length that Eric DeCosta clearly desired when he signed Earl Thomas. Adding Moehrig provides immediate stability at an important position, would allow Chuck Clark and DeShon Elliott to play more in the box, plus using more dime packages on third down in 2021.
Trevon checks all the boxes and makes tons of sense as a home run fit in the immediate future as well as long-term impact in Baltimore.

Andrew appears by his side seconds later, takes one look at the charred disaster, and says, “At least you did not burn the Tower down.”
Neil sighs. Happy birthday, he thinks mockingly as he chucks the brownie into the garbage bin.
