will he be okay?
TW: Chrons disease
ive mentioned in a story before about how bennys character is based off my friend and i, so i asked him if it was okay if i added this into this story and he agreed, he was diagnosed with Chrons disease when we were in third grade, and he’s been such an optimist through out all the struggles he’s faced throughout the years and ive never had such respect for someone or have met anyone stronger, i hope everyone is doing well and staying safe
"I'm going to go get the kids from he school bus, and make sure they don't bring home any more stray dogs." Link said as he stuck his head through the door to the nursery.
"Alright, just make sure they're quiet when they come in. I'm hoping this guy will go right to sleep once he's done eating."
"I'll make sure of it." He assured as he quietly shut the door. Before he left he secured the dog on his leash and made his way to the bus stop.
Once his kids got off the bus they ran to him, or so he thought. The pair leaned down to pet the dog, unintentionally ignoring their father.
"Hello to you too." Link did his signature wave trying to catch his kids attention.
"Sorry Dad." Scout apologized as he jumped up to hug his father. "I just missed Rex, and it seems like he missed us."
"He did, he stayed by the window all day waiting for you two."
"Aww, that's kind of sad." Scout replied taking the leash from his dad, trying to show that he could handle the responsibility of a dog.
"Well he's happy now." Link ruffled his son hair in attempt to comfort him, he looked back to see his daughter trudging behind. He walked over to her and picked her up. "Everything okay? You seem kind of down."
"Yeah." The girl sighed leaning her head on his shoulder.
The father looked at her daughter, concerned. For the past couple of days she seemed to be down, he was starting to worry that she was feeling left out. He didn't want her feeling like the cliche middle child, he wanted her to feel loved and attended to. Before he opened the door he reminded them to be quiet to allow their brother to sleep.
"How was school?" Amelia whispered as she walked down the stairs to be met with her family.
"Good!" Scout whispered, as he unbuckled the dogs leash. "I got 100 on my spelling test!"
"Good job!" Amelia congratulated. "And how was your day Addie?"
"Fine." She sighed walking away as her father let her down.
"Is she okay?" Amelia asked her husband as the girl was put of ear shot.
"I don't know, she's been quiet since she got off the bus. Is she feeling left out do you think?"
"Maybe? I mean we've been pretty preoccupied with the baby. I'm gonna talk to her tonight."
_______________________________________
"So which story are we reading tonight?" Amelia asked her daughter as she sat on her knees by the bookshelf.
"Can I just go to sleep?" She asked turning around to face the wall.
"I'm sorry me and your dad have been so preoccupied with Anders, it doesn't mean we love you any less. We still love you so so so much." The mother was met with silence, She stood up to sit on the edge of her daughters bed placing a comfortable hand on her leg. "Alright you don't have to talk, but you still have to wake up early tomorrow for book club even if it's Saturday."
"I'm not going to book club." This statement shocked the girls mother, there was never a week she missed it if she could help it.
"Why?"
"I just don't want to."
"Did you and Benny get into a fight?" To this her daughter started to cry. Amelia moved herself so she could embrace her daughter. "What happened?"
"He hasn't been in school for almost two weeks. And I don't know if he was at book club last week because we went to see Anders." The girl cried into her mother's chest.
"He could have the flu. We'll see if he's at book club tomorrow and if not I'll cal his dad."
"No, I don't want to go without Benny."
"Okay." Amelia kissed the top of her daughters head and allowed her to cry.
_______________________________________
"What'd his dad say?" Link asked when his wife walked back into their sons nursery.
"They're still running tests, but they think he has Chrons disease."
"God, poor guy." Link sighed, as he rocked his son to sleep. He knew what it was like to grow up in a hospital, and it sadden him that such a good kid like Benny had to go through that. "Are you gonna tell Addie?"
"No, not until they confirm the diagnosis." Amelia kneeled down at the rocking chair where her husband and son resided, and rubbed her sons head. "With Christopher I didn't really have to watch him suffer that much, I-I just can't imagine watching your kid be in so much pain everyday and your powerless to fix them."
"Me either."
A knock on the door, taking them out of their conversation. Their daughter slowly opened the door, and smiled at her parents.
"What did his dad say?" She asked as she walked over to admire the baby with her parents.
"Well, um he's sick so he's at the doctors right now. Their gonna run tests to see what's going on."
"And their gonna fix him?" She asked hopefully, a smile plastered across her face. The couple looked at each other unsure of what to say to their daughter.
"Their gonna help him feel better." At the moment there was no cure for the condition, but there was treatment to help manage the pain and to keep it from progressing.
"That's good, I can't wait till he's back at school." Addison stated before she left the room.
"Did we just give her false hope?" Amelia asked biting at her nail.
"No, no, kids are resilient, and they can live pretty normal lives with the condition. I mean he probably won't be at school too often, but I saw kids with the disease while at the hospital and their still normal kids with normal lives." Link assured.
_______________________________________
It had been three weeks since Bennys diagnosis of Chrons disease had been confirmed. His dad called Amelia, asking if Addie could come by and say hi. Benny was pretty upset, and wanted to see his best friend.
"Hey Addie." Amelia leaned in her daughters doorway.
"Hey mommy." She laid in the middle of the floor, watching her fan spin around. Her mother moved to lay next to her.
"Do you remember when we talked about Benny being at the doctors?" The girl nodded in response. "Well he has something called Chrons disease. So his intestines are inflamed, which causes him to have a lot of stomach pain." She tried to state it in the simplest of terms and the less scary version.
"Okay, when do they do surgery to fix it?" The five year old asked.
"Well surgery isn't going to fix this, he may need it in the future to help him, but this doesn't get cured. The doctors are looking for a cure, but they've figured out how to help people manage it and not feel as bad."
"Oh." Amelia could see the sadness on her daughters face. "He'll still go to school right?"
"Well he'll try, but probably not a lot."
"How will he learn?"
"The teachers will probably send work home to him, and a tutor will come by and help him."
"Will he still be able to play?"
"When he feels up to it."
"What about reading?"
"He'll still be able to read."
"Can I see him?"
"Yeah, actually he asked if you can come over tomorrow." The girl nodded vigorously in agreement, she could tell the girl was trying to be strong. The little girl wrapped her arms around her mother, allowing tears to stain her shirt.
________________________________________
"Hi." Addie shyly greeted as she stood at his bedroom door.
"Hi! Come in!" He cheerfully said, waving at her to walk in further. "Let's color, I printed out some new coloring sheets.
"Okay." She agreed sitting next to him on the floor and picking up a crayon along with a sheet of paper. "Do you feel okay?"
"They gave me some medicine, it helps a little bit."
"Does that hurt?" Addie asked pointing to the IV in his arm.
"No, and can we not talk about my sickness and just color?"
"Yeah." Addie smiled brightly, she wanted to help her friend but she was relieved that they could pretend everything was normal.
"Did your mom have the baby?"
"Yeah, his name is Anders. Oh! And we got a dog!"
"Really?! What kind of dog?" He matched her excitement, he knew how much she wanted one.
"We're not sure we found him hurt in a park. His name is Rex though."
"Next time we go to he park you need to bring Rex and I'll bring Buddy. They're gonna be best friends just like us!"
"Best friends." Addie smiled looking at her friend before she continued to color.

Sorry for the delay, life has had me busy. I present to you the temple of the week.
TEMPLE OF CASTOR AND PULLOX
Castor, aedes: a temple of Castor (or the Dioscuri?) in circo Flaminio, that is, in Region IX, to which there are but two references. Its day of dedication was 13th August (Hemerol. Allif. Amit. ad id. Aug.; CIL I2 p325: Castori Polluci in Circo Flaminio; Fast. Ant. ap. NS 1921, 107), and it is cited by Vitruvius (IV.8.4) as an example of an unusual type (columnis adiectis dextra ac sinistra ad umeros pronai), like a temple of Athene on the Acropolis at Athens, and another at Sunium (Gilb. III.76, 84).
Castor, aedes, templum: * the temple of Castor and Pollux at the south-east corner of the forum area, close to the fons Iuturnae (Cic. de nat. deor. III.13; Plut. Coriol. 3; Dionys, VI.13; Mart. I.70.3; FUR fr. 20, cf. NS 1882, 233). According to tradition, it was vowed in 499 B.C. by the dictator Postumius, when the Dioscuri appeared on this spot after the battle of Lake Regillus, and dedicated in 484 by the son of the dictator who was appointed duumvir for this purpose (Liv. II.20.12, 42.5; Dionys. loc. cit.). The day of dedication is given in the calendar as 27th January (Fast. Praen. CIL I2 p308; Fast. Verol. ap. NS 1923, 196; Ov. Fast. I.705‑706), but by Livy (II.42.5) as 15th July. The laterº may be merely an error, or the date of the first temple only (see WR 216‑217, and literature there cited).
Its official name was aedes Castoris (Suet. Caes. 10: ut enim geminis fratribus aedes in foro constituta tantum Castoris vocaretur; Cass. Dio XXXVII.8; and regularly in literature and inscriptions — Cic. pro Sest. 85; in Verr. I.131, 132, 133, 134; III.41; Liv. cit. and VIII.11.16; Fest. 246, 286;1 Gell. XI.3.2; Mon. Anc. IV.13; Plaut. Curc. 481; CIL VI.363, 9177, 9393, 9872, 10024 — aedes Castorus (CIL I2582.17) or Kastorus (ib. 586.1; cf. EE III.70) appear merely as variants of this), but we also find aedes Castorum (Plin. NH X.121; XXXIV.23; Hist. Aug. Max. 16.1; Valer. 5.4; Not. Reg. VIII; Chron. 146), and Castoris et Pollucis2 (Fast. p103Praen. CIL p.I2.308; Asc. in Scaur. 46; Suet. Tib. 20; Cal. 22; Flor. Ep. III.3.20, cf. Lact. Inst. II.7.9; CIL VI.2202, 2203, although perhaps not in Rome, cf. Jord. I.2.369), forms due either to vulgar usage or misplaced learning. Besides aedes, templum is found in Cicero (pro Sest. 79; in Vat. 31, 32; in Pis. 11, 23; pro Mil. 18; de domo 110; de harusp. resp. 49; ad Q. fr. II.3.6), Livy once (IX.43.22), Asconius (in Pis. 23; in Scaur. 46), the Scholia to Juvenal (XIV.261), the Notitia and Chronograph (loc. cit.). In Greek writers it appears as τὸ τῶν Διοσκούρων ἱερόν (Dionys. VI.13), τὸ Διοσκόρειον (Cass. Dio XXXVIII.6; LV.27.4; LIX.28.5; Plut. Sulla 33), νεὼς τῶν Διοσκούρων (Cass. Dio LX.6.8; App. B. C. I.25; Plut. Sulla 8; Pomp. 2; Cato Min. 27).
This temple was restored in 117 B.C. by L. Caecilius Metellus (Cic. pro Scauro 46, and Ascon. ad loc.; in Verr. I.154; Plut. Pomp. 2). Some repairs were made by Verres (Cic. in Verr. I.129‑154), and the temple was completely rebuilt by Tiberius in 6 A.D., and dedicated in his own name and that of his brother Drusus (Suet. Tib. 20; Cass. Dio LV.27.4; Ov. Fast. I.707‑708). Caligula incorporated the temple in his palace, making it the vestibule (Suet. Cal. 22; Cass. Dio LIX.28.5; cf. Divus Augustus, Templum, Domus Tiberiana), but this condition was changed by Claudius. Another restoration is attributed to Domitian (Chron. 146), and in this source the temple is called templum Castoris et Minervae, a name also found in the Notitia (Reg. VIII), and variously explained (see Minerva, Templum). It had also been supposed that there was restoration by Trajan or Hadrian (HC 161), and that the existing remains of columns and entablature date from that period, but there is no evidence for this assumption, and the view has now been abandoned (Toeb. 51). The existing remains are mostly of the Augustan period (AJA 1912, 393), and any later restorations must have been so superficial as to leave no traces.
This temple served frequently as a meeting-place for the senate (Cic. in Verr. I.129; Hist. Aug. Maxim. 16; Valer. 5; CIL I2586.1), and played a conspicuous rôle in the political struggles that centred in the forum (Cic. de har. resp. 27; de domo 54, 110; pro Sest. 34; in Pis. 11, 23; pro Mil. 18; ad Q. fr. II.3.6; App. B. C. I.25), its steps forming a sort of second Rostra (Plut. Sulla 33; Cic. Phil. III.27). In it were kept the standards of weights and measures (CIL V.8119.4; XI.6726.2; XIII.10030.13 ff.; Ann. d. Inst. 1881, 182; Mitt. 1889, 244‑245), and the chambers in the podium (see below) seem to have served as safe deposit vaults for the imperial fiscus (CIL VI.8688, 8689),3 and for the treasures of private individuals ( Cic. pro Quinct. 17; Iuv. XIV.260‑262 and Schol.). No mention is made of the contents of this temple, artistic p104or historical, except of one bronze tablet which was a memorial of the granting of citizenship to the Equites Campani in 340 B.C. (Liv. VIII.11.16).
The traces of the earlier structures (including some opus quadratum belonging to the original temple; see Ill. 12) indicate successive enlargements with some changes in the plan of cella and pronaos (for the discussion of these changes and the history of the temple, see Van Buren, CR 1906, 77‑82, 184, who also thinks that traces can be found of a restoration in the third century B.C.; cf. however, AJA 1912, 244‑246). The Augustan temple was Corinthian, octastyle and peripteral, with eleven columns on each side, and a double row on each side of the pronaos. This pronaos was 9.90 metres by 15.80, the cella 16 by 19.70, and the whole building about 50 metres long by 30 wide. The floor was about 7 metres above the Sacra via. The very lofty podium consisted of a concrete core enclosed in tufa walls, from which projected short spur walls. On these stood the columns, but directly beneath them at the points of heaviest pressure travertine was substituted for tufa. Between these spur walls were chambers in the podium, opening outward and closed by metal doors. From the pronaos a flight of eleven steps, extending nearly across the whole width of the temple, led down to a wide platform, 3.66 metres above the area in front. This was provided with a railing and formed a high and safe place from which to address the people. From the frequent references in literature (see above) it is evident that there was a similar arrangement in the earlier temple of Metellus. Leading from this platform to the ground were two narrow staircases, at the ends and not in front. The podium was covered with marble and decorated with two cornices, one at the top and another just above the metal doors of the strong chambers. Of the superstructure three columns on the east side are standing, which are regarded as perhaps the finest architectural remains in Rome. They are of white marble, fluted, 12.50 metres in height and 1.45 in diameter. The entablature, 3.75 metres high, has a plain frieze and an admirable worked cornice (for the complete description of the remains of the imperial temple previous to 1899, see Richter, Jahrb. d. Inst. 1898, 87‑114; also Reber, 136‑142; D'Esp. Fr. I.87‑91; II.87; for the results of the excavations since 1899, CR 1899, 466; 1902, 95, 284; BC 1899, 253; 1900, 66, 285; 1902, 28; 1903, 165; Mitt. 1902, 6667; 1905, 80; for general discussion of the temple, Jord. I.2.369‑376; LR 271‑274; HC 161‑164; Théd. 116‑120, 210‑212;a DE I.175‑176; WR 268‑271; DR 160‑170; RE Suppl. IV.469‑471; Mem. Am. Acad. V.79‑1024; ASA 70; HFP 37, 38).
This temple was standing in the fourth century, but nothing is known of its subsequent history, except that in the fifteenth century only three columns were visible, for the street running by them was called via Trium Columnarum (Jord. II.412, 501; LS I.72, and for other reff. II.69, p105199, 202; DuP 97). In the early nineteenth century it was often wrongly called the Graecostasis or the temple of Jupiter Stator.

Time Wolf - Chapter 9
“There she is,” Ian smiled as he motioned toward the charging station. “Your repaired and completed TX-31.”
The suit now had legs, which was a relief to Stephen as he had no idea how much time travel might have damaged his body. He looked back and forth between the suit and Ian. “You’re sure about this?”
“Positive,” Ian smiled as he responded. “She’s all charged up, ready to go. All she needs is you.”
“Shouldn’t we have a plan first?” Dr. Bea’s question echoed through the basement as she descended, with Laricia close behind.
“We have one,” Ian retorted. “Get Stephen in the suit, send him back, have him shoot up Wolf Technologies, let him live happily ever after, the end.”
“If only it was that simple,” Dr. Bea responded. “Do you know how hard it’s going to be to allow him to make that jump? The minute the Wolf soldiers detect temporal activity, they’ll send their own TX-31 after him.”
“Let them. If he does his job right, they’ll disappear when he finishes the job.”
“Can I say something?” Stephen piped up, although both Dr. Bea and Ian were past the point of listening. Laricia took the argument opportunity to walk up to Stephen.
“Are you okay?” The short woman’s voice had trembling concern.
“I’ll be all right,” Stephen responded. “I’m just scared as hell and I don’t know what I’m doing, is all.”
Laricia chuckled. “You never did.” She had a sad expression on her face, and a single tear rolled down her cheek.
Stephen was taken short by the words. “What did you say?”
Laricia motioned for Stephen to crouch down to her level. By putting his foot back first, he was able to prevent the chair from growing out of his backside, as he came face-to-face with the short woman. She desperately wrapped her arms around his neck.
“There’s something you need to know before you go.” Her voice was a whisper. “I love you, Daddy, and I’ve missed this you.”
Stephen felt his heart drop. Laricia? She was the baby Tifffany was going to bear? Tears welled up in his own eyes as he returned the embrace. “I don’t even know you yet in my time, Laricia, but please know that I love you already.”
They held the embrace for a long time, only finally breaking off when Ian cleared his throat. They looked up at Ian and Dr. Bea, standing over them with their hands on their respective hips.
“Are you ready to go?” Dr. Bea intoned.
“I guess.” Stephen stood up and approached the suit. He touched the metallic Wolf logo on the chest, which opened up the front surface of every part of the suit. He stepped inside and felt it close around him.
Chime. “Welcome, Stephen Rockford.” The heads-up display lit up once more.
Welcome Back.
Time/Day: 11:33am MDT, September 2nd, 2073
Command?
Stephen sighed, feeling the helmet closed around his head and being conscious of his confinement. He looked around the room, catching sight of all the other occupants. Stephen took a deep breath. “DNA analysis, subject Laricia Underwood, compare to pilot database.”
The heads-up display winked out. Chime. “Analysis complete. Results displayed.” The view was soon dominated by graphs and two lines of blinking text.
Marker Match: 95%
Conclusion: Biological Descendant; Child Likely
               It was true.
“Stephen, can you hear me?” Ian waved at the suit.
“Loud and clear,” Stephen responded. “Ready when you are.”
Ian nodded. “She should be pre-programmed, Stephen, ask for subroutine IU5.”
Stephen nodded, barely able to move his head in the helmet. He quietly spoke into the helmet mike. “Enable subroutine IU5.”
The heads-up display flashed a similar message to his original trip.
Slip Ready. Chron: -35a
OK? (Y/N)
Stephen looked back and forth between Laricia, Ian, and Dr. Bea. His head danced with conflicting feelings. If time truly was immutable … if time traveler-created events and objects were not changeable, regardless of the paradoxes created, then what point was there in this mission? It was not going to change their world. Nothing would.
But if he could create an alternate Laricia … an alternate Dr. Bea … an alternate self. That would be worth time travelling again. But he had to do more. He had to find his victims.
               “Change destination and protocol.”
Ian and Dr. Bea acted like they had heard him. Probably Dr. Bea had alerted Ian, since she could read his mind and all. She was at least the one who spoke up. “Stephen, no! Stick with the plan!”
               “Sorry, doc.”
Chime. “Destination override by pilot accepted.”
The heads-up display showed a new message.
Slip Ready. Chron: +-?????a
Enter Chron Value
Stephen’s brow knotted. “Minus one million chron.”
               Chime. “Value accepted. Please confirm.”
Slip Ready. Chron: -1,000,000a
OK? (Y/N)
His voice failed. Memories crashed over Stephen, memories of the first time slip. His breathing came fast. Ian and Dr. Bea were scrambling around outside, looking at displays.
Only Laricia stood still. She looked up at Stephen, at her alternate father locked into the TX-31. She smiled. “Find Mom.”
For the first time in a long while, Stephen felt peace. He cleared his throat. “Yes!”
The helmet rocked backward, locking into place in the familiar way. He heard the power-up noise, drowning out the protests of Ian and Dr. Bea. Stephen clenched his fists, awaiting the peculiar feelings of the slip.
His body contorted. It turned inside out, then right side out, then flipped and stretched and knotted, until finally he disappeared, zooming into the time stream.
This time, the slip was extraordinarily long. The darkness of the time stream allowed starlight to pulse through. Stephen decided that remaining conscious during time travel was probably one of the greatest human experiences ever. Streaks of color zipped past him, punctuated by smaller streaks. Other TX-31s, Stephen assumed, making various journeys. The purpose of those trips chilled Stephen, despite the climate controls in his suit.
Eventually even the stunning temporal landscape around him became tedious, as the trip continued to stretch out. Stephen sighed. He whistled. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep, although sleep was impossible. Finally the boredom was too much, and he started talking to the onboard computer. “State last database upgrade.”
Chime. “Most recent upgrade on September 1st, 2073, completed at 11:30pm Mountain Daylight Time.”
It was worth a shot. “Access information on Stephen Rockford.”
               Chime. “Information secured. Enter passcode.”
Restricted Access Data
Enter Passcode To Continue.
Stephen racked his brain, thinking of what could possibly be a passcode. The inspiration finally struck, and he softly whispered his chosen code. “Passcode: Laricia.”
Restricted Access Data
Passcode: Laricia
Access Granted
The heads-up display was flooded with images, text, newspaper articles, and every possible bit of information about the future Stephen Rockford.
Chime. “Stephen Jackson Rockford, born April 12th, 2004 in Rapid City, South Dakota to father Neil Rockford and mother Paulette Ghein-Rockford. Current age in 2073: 79 years old. Widowed. Wife Tiffany Fulton-Rockford killed October 11th, 2065 in Boulder, Colorado. One daughter, Laricia Paulette Rockford-Underwood. Only child.”
               Stephen breathed deeply. “Professional information.”
Chime. “Stephen Rockford holds a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado and a Master’s Degree in astrophysics from Cal Tech. Initially hired by Wolf Technologies in 2035 as a technician, initially a lab assistant in Research and Development. As one of the few technicians to survive the attack in 2038, he was promoted to Head of Engineering, and in 2044 was named CEO after the successful test of the TX-31 Chronal Intervention jumpsuit.”
So he ran the world because of this stupid device. Stephen sighed deeply. He was nowhere near finished with this slip. “Personal information.”
Chime. “Stephen Rockford was only married one time, to Tiffany Fulton-Rockford. The couple’s child, Laricia Rockford-Underwood, was born on May 18th, 2039. Current age in 2073: 34 years old. No other children known.”
Not much there to tell him anything. He busied himself looking at the pictures. He finally noticed one thing about the photos after a certain point: the ring was removed from his finger. “Information request: location of Stephen Rockford’s wedding band.”
Chime. “Stephen Rockford stopped wearing his wedding band a year after the death of Tiffany Fulton-Rockford, and the location of the ring is currently unknown.”
His blood chilled again, for what felt like the millionth time since he had taken the suit. If future him didn’t have the ring, how was it in the wreckage in the break room?
The wreckage! “Information request: wreckage incident in Wolf Technologies R&D break room, August 30th, 2038.”
Chime. “Unknown wreckage appeared spontaneously in the center of the R&D break room early in the morning of August 30th. Because of the attack later in the morning, a full analysis was not possible until a month later.”
               “Analysis result?”
Chime. “Wreckage was identified as an early production model of the TX-31 Chronal Intervention jumpsuit. Serial numbers on the suit identified it as the ninth Mark II edition of the suit to come off the line.”
Still a mystery. He felt the ring in two places, on his finger and under his tongue, where he had been hiding it since the attack on the Underwoods’ home.
Estimated Arrival: 30s
Prepare for Arrival
Chime. “Prepare for landing in target time.” It was helpful that the computer voice and the heads-up display both alerted him, otherwise he would have been lost in his thoughts and missed the landing, probably hurt himself on re-entry. Stephen tensed his core muscles, awaiting the re-entry into the regular time stream. He kept his eyes forward, watching carefully as the suit began lowering toward one of the colored tracks.
As he did, he saw other white streaks approaching. He was hoping to avoid a fight, and if those were TX-31s …
But wait, he looked closer at one of the streaks and saw just a person. They were zooming through the space between time, unprotected, not even wearing a regular jumpsuit.
Stephen’s heart sank. Those were the upgrade victims, the ones who had been sent through his miniature black holes. More white streaks zoomed overhead. They surrounded him. Too many people were being hit with the weapon, far too many for his taste.
Bile rose in his throat as another streak passed overhead, and he recognized, with horror, the frightened face of Laricia Underwood.

Wine Veteran Hopes To Elevate Cannabis With Wine And Food Pairings
Marijuana News by way of 420 Intel Reports:
At a February dinner party in San Francisco, the classic wine-pairing dinner got an upgrade. The theme was “herbal romance,” and the love affair was squarely with cannabis.
The venue evoked a speakeasy, with a “secret” second-story room entered through an alley in lower Nob Hill — although now, with Prohibition over, both wine and weed flowed freely. That’s thanks in part to San Francisco’s Jamie Evans, who is parlaying her 10 years of experience in the wine world to focus full time on the gourmet possibilities of the burgeoning cannabis industry.
As 85 guests sipped cannabis-infused cocktails from Chron Vivant founder John Korkidis, the talk was very San Francisco: who had just paid off their student loans using cryptocurrency riches, where to find handmade leather goods in the Mission and, of course, what was the latest buzz on cannabis.
The ambiance created by DJ Trop (nee Tyson Leonard), who plays violin to electronic music, suggested a modern, slightly younger approach to the traditional wine-and-dine format.
Some attendees were friends of the hosts; others were industry types (such as Gretchen Miller, creator of CBD lubricant brand Kiskanu). But most were simply “canna-curious,” either out on a date or trying something fun with friends.
As curiosity about marijuana usage builds, Evans has found that elegant, curated events like this are the best way to educate a new class of consumer that just collectively “turned 21.” In 2017, Evans started a website called The Herb Somm, where she writes about the cannabis-meets-culinary world.
Now she’s parlaying those chef interviews, tasting tips and recipe ideas into a full-fledged lifestyle brand that leans on her hospitality chops and wine industry contacts.
Billed as “bites, bubbles and buds,” this event, Evans said, was to promote the relationship between terroir and terpenes (which give wine and cannabis, respectively, specific aromas and flavors).
This was the most elaborate event so far for Evans, who organized it with former Cal Poly San Luis Obispo classmate Devika Maskey, founder of “luxury cannabis” brand Tso Sonoma. The sold-out tickets, $150 each, included a three-course dinner, wine pairings and cannabis-infused caramel cookies from Higher Confections.
After the reception, guests sat at three candlelit tables. In addition to standard accouterments such as wine glasses and menus, tables included bottles of infused olive oil from Pot d’Huile, jars of marijuana flower from small-batch cannabis purveyor Flow Kana and a turpene aroma and pairing guide.
“We are entering a new era in which dinner experiences aren’t just about wine and food anymore,” Evans said, pointing out that, just as in wine, the land, soil, water and growing practices each play a role in the characteristics of the plant.
During the first course of albacore tuna crudo, Evans encouraged diners to “self-dose” with drops of olive oil. One milliliter of Pot d’Huile contains 1 milligram each of THC and CBD, the psychoactive and nonpsychoactive components of the plant. “Go low, start slow and don’t overdo it,” Evans advised as guests dabbed and drizzled the oil on rustic bread.
Pot d’Huile founder Yannick Crespo has a background in financial modeling. He started the company as a passion project to bridge what he saw as a “huge disconnect” between the worlds of wine and food with cannabis. By infusing olive oil, he thought, he could help chefs create food that would encourage the connection that happens when people crowd around the dinner table.
Plus, he added, “what grows together, goes together” — a common refrain among those in the canna-culinary movement. (Similarly, Korkidis, who makes cannabis flavoring agents that can be used in alcohol-free “mocktails,” came to cannabis cocktails from an unrelated industry.)
For the following courses (winter squash soup followed by braised short ribs), Evans instructed guests to compare the bouquet of various Ellipsis wines with the aromas of the cannabis flowers in jars, pointing out that just as in food, specific wines and cannabis strains can complement each other.
Evans said that growing up, she would “never have imagined in my wildest dreams we would be here doing this,” adding that to break the stigma facing cannabis, education is key. “It’s used for many pleasurable experiences, but also know this is a medicine used to heal the heart, body and soul.”
In March — a year after she created The Herb Somm — Evans began hosting a monthly event series, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. At $110 a ticket for up to 34 people, the “pop-up” style events will introduce the San Francisco audience to local chefs who are cooking with cannabis.
For now, restaurants with an alcohol license cannot host cannabis events, but Evans thinks it would be cool to one day have a full-fledged restaurant where people can experience both wine and cannabis in one place.
“I just want people to realize that you can incorporate cannabis into so many different experiences. It can be more high-end,” she said. “It’s important for people to realize it’s not just for ‘lazy stoners.’ It’s actually a very intelligent, intellectual plant. People can think of it like they think of a wine.”

""Why am I getting quoted 11,000 for 1.0L third party only car insurance?""
I am 17 years old (male) and have just passed my driving test. I was supposed to purchase a 2010 Citroen C1 5 door with a 1.0L engine today but had a look at the insurance first. This tiny, under powered pathetic excuse of a car is probably the most insurance friendly car I could think of yet on all the car insurance sites like go compare and confused the lowest quotes were 11,000. What am I doing wrong? I have been able to choose all the best stuff like locked in a garage at night, the highest excess, low annual mileage etc There is nothing in my details that would be counter productive for a low insurance quote. This is only third party as well, if I was to have a bump my car wouldn't even be covered! I need to be driving by christmas, I don't even care that much about what car I have to drive (hence the C1) as long as it isn't too old. Just anything that I will get a realistic quote on. Any advice? Maybe I am doing something wrong here. Thanks!""

Car insurance for a new driver + sports car?
Well, my dad owns a 1959 TR-3 Triumph, and also a 1981 Delorean. I will be turning 16 soon, and I plan on purchasing car insurance so I can drive a 2006 Hyundai Sonata to school and around town. The problem is.. I want to be able to occasionally drive my dad's Triumph TR-3 around town, to school, on nice days, etc. Maybe only on weekends, that kind of thing. The problem is, I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on car insurance for a car I won't be driving very often. Anyone know any Vision Insurance Companies?

Isn't the expected value of health insurance for a healthy purpose going to be highly negative?
And so, it might be unwise for a healthy person to purchase health insurance on the individual open market? First, we have the insurance companies as a profit-taking industry. They exist to make money. So obviously they take in more premiums than they pay out for medical expenses. Right off the bat, we have a negative expected value for the buyers of health insurance. In other words, you should expect that the premiums you pay to the health insurance company will be more than the benefits you get back, on average. But on top of that, for a HEALTHY person, the difference would be even greater. Since your risk is grouped together with the risk of more unhealthy people (obese, smokers, etc), you're basically subsidizing their insurance. So the difference between your premiums and the expected benefits you get back is even more. It seems like a very fit, health-conscious person is really taking it on the chin by buying health insurance in the individual market. Maybe they'd often be better off by just building up a health savings account and self-insuring?""

I'm 20 (will be 21 in March '08) and have only been on my dad's insurance. His record isn't that great so to add on a car to his is expensive. My relative is selling a '98 Escort - very basic - to get to work and college. $1500 car. don't understand collison and comprehensive. The one that pays for a replacing the car I don't want. Anyway, I went online for quotes and they ask if I've had insurance before and I haven't (on my own) so I'm not sure if I'm being docked for that. I have a clean driving record and just want some basic coverage mostly for if I hit other people. Could someone guide me so I don't have to pay an arm and a leg? What are the ranges I should look for? I see numbers like 200/300/500 but I don't get it. My mom said she'd insure the car under her insurance but then naming me as a drive might be expensive. How do people get insurance that covers any driver? Like when people use other people's car? So many questions! It's hard to work, be in college and pay for car.""

Why do men pay more for car insurance than women?

This country needs affordable health care...so why are hospitals so lavish and extravagantly fancy?
Here is a link to the hospital if you think I am exaggerating..... http://www.henryfordwestbloomfield.com/body_wbloomfield.cfm?id=52381 I don't have insurance, and neither does my husband because we can't afford $600 month premiums for insurance that doesn't even KICK IN until you pay $5000 out of pocket! But it is really hard to sit and listen to everyone complaining about the EXPLODING cost of hospitals these days with all the hospitals in my area that are constantly renovating and competing to be the most lavish or fancy or architecturally beautiful when what people really need are just some common sense medical care from good doctors who will take a few minutes to listen to them. For Example, I recently visited a friend who was in a local hospital in my area that has expanded to include the following...A boardwalk with HUNDREDS of exclusive shops (required a trolly inside it was so huge!), marble fountains and floors and glass elevators and railings, live TV shows in their own Greenhouses and celebrity kitchens, multiple conference centers complete with reflecting pools, grand pianos and atriums with full size trees indoors, a pediatric wing that was bult to look like a giant tree house, complete with Tree shaped doors, private rooms with twenty foot long leather couches that curve along the wall for visiting relatives, 72 inch plasma TV's in the room along with Xbox, and complete cable/internet access, Floor to ceiling bay windows for a panoramic view of the gardens and lakes on the property. Now my friend could NEVER have afforded to stay in a hotel this nice, and couldn't pay for health coverage either. Thank God she qualifies for to be insured thru a medicaid program that covers this...but who is paying for all this excessive stuff? The taxpayers in the United States. I can't help but think that she could get really good care at a reasonable cost at a less fancy hospital...but who is going to tell the hospital where it spends it's money if someone is willing to say its necessary to have an UBER fancy hospital in order to give our citizens modern up to date medical care ?""

Holy Cow! MTT to Step Down in 2020
Tumblr media
MTT, then and now
Who would have thought this day would come? Not me: Michael Tilson Thomas is going to leave his position as Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season. Press release after the cut; in the meantime, various questions come to mind. This can't have been a recent decision, especially considering the prospective plans mentioned in the PR; was it a factor in Brent Assink's departure? Was Brent's departure a factor in this decision? Will there be further personnel changes in the orchestra? And of course: who's next? (Personal to SFS: the Peer Gyntperformance wasn't an opera; it was Grieg's incidental music and bleeding chunks of the Ibsen play.) UPDATED with media coverage, 11/1/2017
Joshua Kosman, SF Chron. "Reputation for fast living" = the 1970s cocaine bust and perhaps whatever rumors there were back then about MTT's sexual orientation (gay, which you didn't discuss in the 70s except in whispers).
Michael Cooper, NY Times. I have absolutely no idea what his first clause means: "Michael Tilson Thomas, whose trailblazing leadership of the San Francisco Symphony spurred American classical music's westward expansion,..." No, MTT did not pioneer classical music in the western United States; SFS was past 75 when he became its conductor, and his predecessors included eminent conductors such as Alfred Hertz, Pierre Monteux, Josef Krips, and Seiji Ozawa. The LA Phil is closing in on its own centenary season. San Francisco Opera is as well. Cal Performances originated with 1908 performances by Sarah Bernhardt. Etc.

MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO CONCLUDE HIS 25-YEAR TENURE AS MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY FOLLOWING THE 20192020 SEASON
SAN FRANCISCO,October 31, 2017- Michael Tilson Thomas today announced plans to conclude his distinguished tenure as Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) in June 2020. The 20192020 Season will mark both his 75th birthday and his 25th year leading the Symphony in what is widely considered one of the most productive musical partnerships in the orchestral world. Tilson Thomas' legacy with the SF Symphony began in 1974 with his debut at age 29, conducting Mahler's Ninth Symphony, and was solidified by his commencement as the Orchestra's 11th Music Director in September 1995. Following the 20192020 Season, Michael Tilson Thomas will assume the title of Music Director Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, and will continue to conduct the Orchestra for a minimum of four weeks each season in addition to other special projects. In anticipation of the celebratory 25th anniversary season of the MTT/SFS partnership, the next two years will feature signature recording projects, festivals, commissioning of new works, staged productions, a two-week tour of the United States in 20182019, and a three-week European tour in 20192020.
Looking back over these decades I am filled with gratitude for the extraordinary artistic partnership I have had with the members of the Orchestra and for the warm and generous style of music making we have shared with all of our audiences, said Michael Tilson Thomas. Having been a Music Director of an orchestra for most of my adult life and as I approach my 75th birthday, I feel this is an appropriate moment to set aside some of my administrative responsibilities and begin a new period of creative possibilities. Fortunately my new and unique relationship as Music Director Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony will allow me to continue to work with my esteemed colleagues for years to come on projects close to my heart.
Throughout more than two decades, Michael Tilson Thomas' leadership of the San Francisco Symphony has been recognized worldwide for building an orchestra that consistently displays artistry of the highest level in its home of Davies Symphony Hall, on over two dozen national and international tours, and through media and recording projects. He has championed the creation and performance of new music through relationships with today's important musical voices, explored the adventurous and iconic American sound, and enhanced the orchestral concert experience through innovative staging and immersive settings. MTT has led the Symphony in growing new audiences by making orchestral music accessible to all through extensive, award-winning media projects including audio and video recordings, national radio and television broadcasts, and streaming and web content. Under his leadership, the Orchestra has built a leading commitment to music education and community activities, expanding its involvement with San Francisco's public school children, fostering many of the finest young musicians, and embracing creative ways to engage with the Bay Area's diverse population.
Michael Tilson Thomas embodies the personality and the spirit of San Francisco, said Sakurako Fisher, President of the San Francisco Symphony. Striving for excellence in all that he does, creative and curious in nature, inclusive of all, and adventurous in his thinking. We look forward to continuing to support his vision, ideas, and innovation around what an orchestra can mean to its community.
"When Michael made his debut with the Orchestra in 1974, it was clear that his passion for the music was matched by his ability to communicate it profoundly with our audiences," said SFS cellist Margaret Tait. "His creative, personal approach to music making and the broadening of the repertoire have been embraced by the Orchestra and made these two decades exciting, rewarding, and inspiring."
Working with Michael has been one of the most joyful and meaningful collaborations of my life, said Eugene Izotov, SFS Principal Oboe. His inspiration, guidance, and spirit have raised the artistic level of this orchestra and shaped the San Francisco Symphony into the kind of ensemble it has never been before. Although he leaves his post as Music Director, I know that his passion, youthful energy, and endless musical curiosity are here to stay with us.
Under Michael Tilson Thomas' leadership, the worldwide artistic reputation of the Orchestra has experienced a trajectory of unprecedented growth, said SFS Executive Director Mark C. Hanson. His vision, energy, and ideas have excited and engaged both new and long-time audiences and have attracted 50 extraordinary musicians who have joined the Orchestra during his tenure. The MTT/SFS partnership is unparalleled and will only continue to strengthen over time.

The label has gone on to offer recordings of many other major works, including those of Beethoven, Ives, and John Adams, as well as a compilation of American maverick composers and a completeWest Side Story. In all there have been 44 SFS Media releases to date. They have captured eight Grammy Awards as well as such honors as France's Diapason d'Or and Germany's Echo Klassik and Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik awards.
