I wonder what Jaron would do if he found out about a gun? it would be a big mistake doing that. Then he would remind me more of Christopher Rowe

The Navigating Fox by Christopher Rowe
Cover art by Yuko Shimizu
Tor, 2023
Quintus Shu'al, the world's only navigating fox, is in disgrace after guiding an expedition to its doom, leaving no survivors. One year later, Quintus is offered the chance to redeem himself: he will need to lead a motley, fractious team - both human and animal--all the way to the gates of Hell.

The Blackthorn Key Question
Does anyone know what Christopher's appearance is? The books I have read did not give any information on his appearance.
Thank you!

The Blackthorn Key Appreciation Post
Here's some appreciation for Kevin Sands' The Blackthorn Key series. This was one of my favorite series in 6th grade--up there with Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and The Hunger Games during that time.
These books are so fun. Of course, they're no Tolkien, but if you want to have some decent fantasy/magic/alchemy, with cool world-building, Dan Brown-esque twists and turns, and a book that lets you solve the mystery alongside the main character, then please read The Blackthorn Key.
Intended age range is probably for 10-14, but just read them if you like alchemy, fantasy, or want to learn about the explosive properties of flour.

Based on the headcanon that Christopher copies Benedict's mannerisms
[image description: A screenshot from Into The Spider-Verse. it pictures a larger, fully grown Spider-Man labeled "Master Benedict" and a smaller teen Spider-Man dressed in a costume labeled "Christopher". They are in the exact same position, squatting with a hand under their chins.]

bailrowe when tom’s sisters readily accept christopher into their home, when he’s been over often enough to know they’ll make him read bedtime stories. bailrowe when christopher has nobody to look to but nonetheless finds himself with tom at his side. bailrowe when christopher is bruised and bloody and weak and this close to solving the mystery when he sees tom confronted and decides he must turn himself in. bailrowe when the only reason he doesn’t is because he sees tom safe. bailrowe when tom finds his wanted pariah friend someplace to stay. bailrowe when tom refuses to leave him. bailrowe when tom refuses to leave him. bailrowe when tom refuses to leave him
bailrowe when christopher is asked, “is there anything else you require?” and he replies, dazed—“where’s tom?”

I found it.
Master Benedict said he wasn't the least bit surprised. According to him, there were several times over the past three years when he was sure I'd finally discovered it. Yet it wasn't until the day before my fourteenth birthday that it came to me so clearly, I thought God Himself had whispered in my ear.
My master believes occasions like this should be remembered. So, as he ordered, I've written down my formula. My master suggested the title.
The Stupidest Idea in the Universe
                             By Christopher Rowe,
Apprentice to Master Benedict Blackthorn, Apothecary
Method of manufacture:            Snoop through your master's private notes. Find a recipe, its words locked behind a secret code, and decipher it. Next, steal the needed ingredients from your master's stores. Finally - and this is the most important step - go to your best friend, a boy of stout character and poor judgment equal to your own, and speak these words: Let's build a cannon.
- The Blackthorn Key, Kevin Sands, page 3
