THE VENTURE BROS.: THE COMPLETE SERIES - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Twenty years in the making, one of the iconic pillars of Adult Swim, THE VENTURE BROS., comes to DVD and digital in a box set that includes the seven year run of the show, all 82 episodes (14 discs), plus every single piece of previously released special features.
REVIEW: Full disclosure, I have not gone through everything. I only got the package on Friday and there is just so much, and that’s just the episodes. What I have watched so far is a real “Wow!”
The series premiered twenty years ago in 2003. It was the year my daughter was born and it was one of the late night shows on Adult Swim that kept me company. It was a delight to go back and rewatch the early episodes, especially on a big screen TV with surround sound. Oh, and no commercial breaks. Twenty years may not be a lot of time, but the writing still stands the test of time. From the writing and the music, to the design of the series, THE VENTURE BROS. pays homage to many of the adventure animated series we grew up with in our youth but takes to a whole other level, an adult comedy level. Watching these episodes again was like a trip down memory lane and there were quite a few things I had missed and made me appreciate the writing even more.
I popped in all the DVDs to view the menus and see the list of extras. No wonder they didn’t list the special features in the press release because there are a lot of them. I had never watched any of them before so I took in a few. They were well made, entertaining and informative. As a fan of the show I enjoyed the insight they added to the viewing experience.
Regardless of your level of fandom with the show, THE VENTURE BROS.: THE COMPLETE SERIES is a nice package that provides hours of viewing pleasure for you to get reacquainted with an old friend. Regardless of the nostalgia, it is the writing that made the series a hit. Some of the episodes were saterial of the period they were written in, but the style is such that it remains timeless and the humor fresh.
The 14-disc box set has a combined runtime of 1,968 minutes.
The TV series was canceled in 2020, with the final season aired in 2018, but The Venture Bros. swan song is coming with the film The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart and will be available Digitally on July 21st and on Blu-ray Disc on July 25th, 2023.
CAST (voices): James Urbaniak, Christopher McCulloch, Michael Sinterniklaas, Patrick Warburton, Paul Boocock, Doc Hammer; plus a cast of hundreds over the 82 episodes. CREW: Creator/Director/Writer - Christopher McCulloch; Directors - Jon Schnepp, Ki-Yong Bai, Juno John Lee, Barry J. Kelly, & Ethan Marak; Writers - Doc Hammer & Ben Edlund; Series Composer - J.G. Thirlwell; OFFICIAL: www.adultswim.com FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/adultswim/ TWITTER: twitter.com/adultswim TRAILER: www.youtube.com/@adultswim for lots of clips and the show opening credit sequence. RELEASE DATE: Digitally and on DVD June 13, 2023
**Until we can all head back into the theaters our “COVID Reel Value” will be similar to how you rate a film on digital platforms - 👍 (Like), 👌 (It’s just okay), or 👎 (Dislike)

Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996)
In today's review, I find that laughter may indeed be the best medicine. As I attempt a #positive review of the 1996 film debut of The Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy #DaveFoley #BruceMcCulloch #KevinMcDonald #MarkMcKinney #ScottThompson #BrendanFraser
Filling the gaps between Monty Python’s Flying Circus and The Whitest Kids U Know, The Kids in the Hall were/are a phenomenal comedy troupe from Toronto, spell-bounding audiences with their absurdist streak, and endearingly quotable sketches. In 1996, almost two years after the hit sketch show was dead and buried (literally), the few remaining members took to expanding their horizons with an…

Profiles in Villainy
The Monarch
Malcolm Fitzcarraldo was just a child when his family’s plane crash left him orphaned and alone in a small forest in rural New Jersey.  He believes that he was taken in by a colony of Monarch butterflies whom he credits with his survival.  Years later, Malcolm joined the Guild of Calamitous Intent and was assigned the role of henchman to the super villain known as Phantom Limb.  He broke with the Guild’s rules by moonlighting as a super villain himself, creating a butterfly-themed costume and calling himself ‘The Mighty Monarch.’  He did this primarily to arch his college nemesis, Dr. Thaddeus 'Rusty' Venture.
You see, hatred is Malcolm's true passion, his raison d'etre. He only feels truly alive when he can indulged in unabated rage and any time this anger begins to subside, it is replaced with a crushing feeling of despair. For reasons he was net yet aware of, this hatred has been primarily focused on Rusty Venture and 'arching' Dr. Venture has proven the ideal means of sustaining his much needed rage.
Tumblr media
When his father’s fortune finally came out of escrow, Malcolm was able to become a sanctioned super villain and The Menacing Monarch was officially recognized by the Guild of Calamitous Intent.  He built a sophisticated layer and hired scores of minions.  These minions, also adored in butterfly-themed outfits, were known as 'The Fluttering Horde.' The Monarch would go on to further bedevil Dr. Venture as an formal arching endorsed by the Guild.
The Monarch would later marry his longtime lieutenant, Mrs. Doctor Girlfriend.  Some time thereafter, The Monarch's obsession with Dr. Venture caused him to be kicked out of the Guild of Calamitous Intent. Around this time, he discovered that his father had secretly acted as the superhero known as The Blue Morpho. Aided by his most-trusted minion, Henchman 21, The Monarch briefly assumed the guise of The Blue Morpho so to circumvent the Guild and continue to torment Dr. Venture and his family. Thanks to Mrs. Dr. Girlfiend's influence within the Guild, however, The Monarch was reinstated and allowed to once more arch Dr. Venture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Monarch would eventually discover that he and Rusty were both clones created by Jonas Venture. The two are nearly identical brother save for a small portion of genetic material from a baboon that was aided to Malcolm so to avoid premature balding (with the unexpected side effect of a seething rage). Having grown bored with his cloning experiment, Jonas Venture kept his first clone as a son and gave away the second to the Fitzcarraldo family to raise as their own.
Having discovered the truth about his heritage, that his hated nemesis was actually his cloned brother, Malcolm was faced with a difficult decision about the direction of his life. With his wife's support and blessing, Malcolm chose to continue on as The Monarch and rededicate himself to crushing Rusty Venture and all he holds dear!
Actor Christopher McCulloch provides the voice of The Monarch, first appearing in the pilot episode of The Venture Bros., airing on  February 16th, 2003.

I did something exactly like this before and it turned out awesome so now I want to do it again or rather give it a new take or a new spin to it.
Here's a fairly solid amount of all the numerous different types of media that I think both fit well in and can share the same universe as one of the top five greatest superhero shows ever made, Christopher McCulloch & Doc Hammer's The Venture Bros., showing the numerous different sides and tones of the same world that you can both read and see below for yourself:
Tumblr media
• Yasuyuki Ueda's Hellsing Ultimate
• Takahiro Omori's Baccano!, Durarara!! and Durarara!! x2
• Sunao Katabuchi's Black Lagoon
• Masayuki Kojima's Monster
• Hiroshi Nishikiori, Tatsuyuki Nagai & Nobuharu Kamanaka's A Certain Magical Index, Railgun and Accelerator
• Tetsuro Araki's Death Note and Attack On Titan
• Chris Carter's The X Files Series (First nine seasons, Fight The Future, Millennium and The Lone Gunmen)
• Joss "Yikes!" Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel
• Todd McFarlane's Spawn Trilogy (HBO)
• Tom Fontana's Oz
• David Simon's The Wire
• Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse's LOST
• Bryan Fuller's Pushing Daises and Hannibal
• Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad Trilogy
• Kurt Sutter's Sons Of Anarchy Duology
• Jeff Pinkner & J.H. Wyman's Fringe
• Jenji Kohan's Orange Is The New Black
• Jami O'Brien's NOS4A2 (TV Series)
• Jerry Seinfeld & Larry David's Seinfeld
• Winnie Holzman's My So-Called Life
• Linwood Boomer's Malcolm In The Middle
• Mitchell Hurwitz's Arrested Development (First three seasons)
• Dan "Ugh!" Schneider's Drake & Josh
• John Wells' Shameless (U.S.)
• Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing

If you ever watch the movie *A bugs life* I can’t help but headcanon Lich’s voice as Hopper cuz he’s a bully and a boss man.😅 especially the last scene where the ants finally are fed up with him and face him for being a tyrant that he is.
That's awesome you have a voice you can hear for Lich. I haven't watched a Bugs Life in a long time, but I liked the movie as a little kid. I can see the parallels with the characters.
Originally, when I first came up with the concept of Lich's character (Can’t even remember what I originally named him. Maybe it was the same name. Can’t remember. Wow…
Either way, Lich's original backstory/ role in a fanfic [I won't name because I wrote it in middle school and it was AWFUL], was very different from what it is now. The plot of the fuc was a ripoff of the movie ,“Heavy Metal” so Ronnie James Dio or Alice Cooper were the two voices I usually associated him with. "The Mob Rules" and "The Black Widdow" are Lich's theme songs.
BUT Kevin Spacey's voice fits Lich very well, now that you pointed it out.
He is oozing with Hopper vibes.
If I had an obscene amount of money to spend, I would hire these voice actors/actresses/ singers (resurrect them from the grave if necessary) to play my ocs and/or Characters from Invader Zim that never officially were assigned hired voice actors.
At least most of my Irken ocs have voices picked out.
Pepperoncini: Sir Christopher Lee (?) Earle Hyman (?) Even those two would have to pitch their voices lower and more gravely. Cini's voice, especially in his later years, is very, VERY deep and ravaged by centuries of smoking pipe amber. I guess the contrast in his bright, lighthearted, bubbly personality amuses me.
I can’t think of a voice that perfectly matches the voice Cini has in my head. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I loosely based his personality on Phyllis Diller and Vincent Price, to give an idea of his mannerisms.
Spinch: Martha Kelly (so shy)
Hoola: Eric Bauza (His personality is based on Daffy Duck, though lacking in WB toon antics and the lisp.)
Mem: Bette Midler (first choice), possibly Kathy Bates or Meryl Streep
Some of Mem's swarm I have casted
Handoverfist aka Hof: Eugene Mirman
Ferocity: Betsy Sodaro
Skathe: Jenny Slate
Starboard: John Fiedler
Zee: Jillian Bell
Rook/ the Sage: Originally I imagined John Cleese playing Rook, at least in Rook's older years (because he was based on the Monty Python’s Holy Grail Tim the Enchanter) or Suzy Izzard.
But again, now that you pointed out the parallels, David Foley fits pretty well too.
Miyuki: I'm sure plenty of people would disagree with me, but I think Cher (or at least a younger Cher), Lynne Lipton (again, younger), or Cree Summer would make great choices for Miyuki.
Kii: Can't get Melissa Fahn's voice out of my head for her, but any suggestions are welcome. Maybe Doro Pesch.
Soxx: Percy Rodriguez (would have to bring him back from the dead)
Hitz: Richard Romanus
Spork: Lorenzo Music (I just do)
Commander Poki: Brooke Dillman (I love that woman's voice. Boss as shit.)
Frylady Soo-Garr: Kristin Chenoweth or Grey DeLisle. Either. Either or would pull off her vindictive personality perfectly.
Pielord Emis-Gee: Ron Funches
Brewmaster Shakkin: Christopher McCulloch
Yeet: Hong Chau (so spunky!)
Vroog: Billie Mae Richards or Maria Bamford for a living person to play her.
Irken Gir would be played by Rosearik Rikki Simons, just no synthesizers or anything.
This is not a complete list by far. If you’re curious about any of ocs that I didn’t list, you can ask about or make suggestions.
Hearing the voices helps develop the character for me

first draft au designs, will rb this w color later
(context for why lord stingray looks Like That: he was initially gonna be played by christopher mcculloch, and that combined w his color palette made adult swim decide he was too similar to the monarch from the venture bros and needed to be recast. so i based him off a butterfly ray and borrowed some elements of the monarch’s design as a nod to that)
