Today, I decided to get a few things together, and tested out working with my tablet* by picking up a copy of Grünberger’s “Analog Algorithm” we have lying around in Mannheim and, well, working with it (you can see the work in progress on my Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C8KhRwxCn0J/
After a few issues with storing and naming the files I worked with (and I am still pretty sure that I didn’t get the permutations right), I posted the screenshots to my Instagram account, while remembering that this was not the first time I worked with this particular book.
Switching back to my laptop, I looked for the files from last time, and especially from when they they were.
Boy, was I surprised to see their date: 22nd of June, 2022. Two years ago, bachelor’s thesis between those files and now, if I may. I am consistent in my summer endeavours.
And I had this smile on my face. How awesome is that? You just continue from where you left off. No deletion, no destruction, just a continuation of your own process, at your own pace.
As part of my explorative investigations into design as program(me), I’m also investing time into Karl Gerstner’s “Designing Programmes”, as well as an aside and, for later, Christian Büning’s “Zirkeltraining für die Augen”, a book which will hopefully allow me to improve my visual design acuity at first glance, which I value as very important for an art director.
Link list of the books mentioned:
Get “Analog Algorithm” from slanted, Lars Müller Publishing, or from Amazon Read more about Analog Algorithm on its dedicated website, https://analog-algorithm.com/
Get the “Designing Programmes” 1967 edition from archive.org, Amazon, and from Lars Müller Publishing There is also a new reprint of this book, which you can find here, https://haraldgeisler.com/books/ in English, German, and French, bien sûr!
Get “Zirkeltraining für die Augen” from Werkstoff Verlag, or from Amazon.

Jani Ho - Bunjil Place EP - live (mostly) modular synth jams from Australia
These recording were made initially made at Bunjil Place art centre in July 2021, in Narra Warren, Victoria, Australia. The impressive architecture and the name, Bunjil Place, were inspired by stories of Bunjil (also referred to as ‘Bundjil’) by our First Nation’s people. These are extremely special, parable-like stories about Bunjil, the ‘creator’ - a wedge-tailed eagle that floated above the earth and brought the world and life into existence. Though each tribal group has their own special relationship with and stories of Bunjil, there are themes that connect the land to the Bunjil story across our traditional owners the Boon Wurrung, Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples, such as referencing Bunjil as the creator spirit that carved man from clay. There are also elements that are specific to each First Nation’s group that embed the story firmly into the vernacular of each tribe such as the species of eagle and the local topography Bunjil may inhabit. Track names and their meaning: 1. Tanderrum - A Tanderrum is an Aboriginal ceremony enacted by the nations of the Kulin people. 2. Land of Wurundjeri - A local tribe, part of the Kulin Nation. 3. Manna Gum - type of Eucalyptus tree, a source of food, medicine, technology and magic. 4. Ngarnga - Meaning to hear or listen. 5. Djeembana - A gathering place for many special occasions. 6. Barring-Buluk - Meaning many footprints Jani Ho acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nations where the production of this piece took place. We pay respect to elders—past, present and emerging—and acknowledge that this always was and always will be Aboriginal land and that sovereignty for this land was never ceded.
Additional comments: This body of work was created on modular synthesisers, Octatrack and two drum machines. Main body of work was performed live at Bunjil Place art Centre, Narra Warren, Victoria, Australia. Post production was done at Finn Audio Studios, Melbourne, Australia in July 2021. JUST ADDED! Analog Algorithm: Source-Related Grid Systems Available at www.draw-down.com German illustrator and designer Christoph Grünberger's Analog Algorithm is a tool kit to create new forms using grid-based design, offering the reader techniques to develop new forms, fonts, logos, and patterns. The concept represents a design process in which individual decisions follow much larger and deeper principles than immediate and spontaneous-intuitive actions. Both a workbook and a source of inspiration, this publication provides designers and architects with the tools they need to find analytical forms—analog, algorithm-based, exploratory but never of arbitrary origin. Using a variety of examples, each chapter contains a detailed description of the procedure from form analysis to setting up design rules and their application. The procedures described allow for an almost infinite number of possibilities. The designer is thus transformed from inventor to interpreter or curator—assessing individual forms for logos, fonts or patterns on the fly and ensures that the design process is always efficient and goal-oriented. #grid #griddesign #design #graphicdesign #ChristophGrünberger (at Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6uK8INn0QG/?igshid=1fu1y43gcfra7

•••COMPETITON••• Designed as a toolkit from which all other forms can be produced this new publication by Christoph Grünberger looks at the many variations and forms that can be achieved with a grid based design. Produced as both a workbook and as a source of inspiration this publication aims to present to the designer the multitude of ways in which a logo or a typeface can be achieved through analog algorithms. To celebrate the launch of this impressive publication we’ve teamed up with @larsmullerpublishers and are giving away a copy, to enter all you need to do is follow the instructions below! Good luck to everyone entering! To enter: 1. Follow @graphic_books 2. Follow @larsmullerpublishers 3. Comment below the answer to the following question Q. What is the name of the designer who is revered for his extensive use of grids, and for producing the seminal piece of design publishing — Grid Systems in graphic design?
