I knew Christopher was going to die before I started writing Chain of Gold. There are a few hints I think in Thorns, but I wanted his death to be unexpected, to hit our characters out of nowhere — and to hit the readers the same way. But indeed, the reason Alexander, his little brother, exists is partly simply so we would know who carries on the Lightwood line down to Alec etc. — because it was never going to be Christopher.

‘His problem,’ Matthew tells him. ‘Though to be fair, you did show up with a book as well.’ He’s trying not to laugh, because the entire situation had been rather ludicrous. Thankfully he’s saved from bursting a vein when Alastair genuinely barks out a laugh.

He sits on the steps leading up to the front door of Lightwood Manor, letting the cold air coat his face, hands, and his ankles from where his pyjama bottoms ride up. His breath leaves him in puffs of white, his nose stings every time he inhales, and his fingertips are a touch frozen, but he doesn’t care.

3. "mask"

That seems to do it for Alastair, who scoops his sister into his arms without another word. Cordelia manages to catch the crack in his guise, the mask he’s held to his face all these years, and she’s thankful for it. It’s a start, and so are the hands clutching desperately at the back of her shirt and the hot tears hitting her neck.

Shadowhunter Family Tree

@cassandraclare is there any chance we will get a comprehensive Shadowhunter family tree at some point. I loved to be able to see how all the characters are connected and I have it figure out for the most part but some things don't seem to connect like they should.

Primarily what I am thinking about are some connections from The Last Hours characters: (1) Who continues on the Lightwood family line, I've seen its listed as Christoper and Grace which doesn't make sense since Christopher died in CoT. (2) Does Emma Carstairs really descend from Alastair? Did him and Thomas adopt kids and take the Carstairs name? Or did the line continue with Zachary? (3) Same question for Clary's line descending from Charles.

I know this probably isn't your main concern but I just love to be able to see the connections that way and follow the family ties of all our favorite characters. I'd love to hear your idea behind all these things!

Chain of Iron rant (Part 1)

Soooo this is going to be a rant abt Chain of Iron so shoo if you don't want spoilers

Well actually, I'm going to start with a bit of Chain of Gold and my first impressions...

Cordelia, Lucie, James, Mathew, Christopher, and Thomas. I instantly liked them.

Alastair. I hated him so much. He was so arrogant not to mention he lost his temper quite quickly.

Anna. I just simped. That's all. She is perfection.

Jesse. I didn't know what to think but I liked him because he seemed like a nice and chill dude.

Grace. I instantly hated her. I didn't like her vibe. AT ALL.

And turns out this rant will be about Alastair.

My opinions on Alastair changed gradually. He really did love Cordelia and I, uh, kinda started to simp? Then the whole thing with Charles in the library happened and I was like: oH. aHeM. Nice to know he's a fellow gae but I cna't simp for him. Then I remembered how he's a fictional character...So I resumed my simping because he continued to prove that he wasn't too bad. Then he turned on Cordelia so I got mad. But still, I felt bad because Charles is someone who cares more about politics and his social status than Alastair. Then I learned about how he'd been shielding Cordelia from Elias's drinking. I just. I love him. Sure, he's used to be a complete asshole at the Shadowhunter Academy but I genuinely think he's changed. But I don't believe people change. I think that underneath he really is a caring dude except he doesn't let it show.

Okay, that was my opinion on Alastair badly summarized. Well, I guess it's time to talk about how much I ship Thomas and Alastair. So I finished Ghosts of the Shadow market a few days ago and I read about how Thomas was standing up for Alastair and that was kind of odd. Considering Thomas is the shy type. So even though I knew what was going to happen, later on, I shipped it. Alastair didn't even notice him and I was really sad about that. Back to Chain of Gold. So, when they met in Paris, and they went on the unofficial date(I'm calling it a date because they spent time together just the two of them and I think Thomas was trying not to die), I was waiting for a kiss because I, have very high expectations and forget that falling in love takes a long time. And I really was wondering why they didn't because they seemed to like each other. Goddamit Charles. I hate him. Even though he truly loves Alastair. Now to Chain of Iron.

Wait I don't know if this was in Chain of Gold or Chain of Iron but Mattew was talking about how Alastair spread rumours of how he was Gideon Lightwood's bastard and Thomas said not to talk to him again. And I remember how Alastair fled the ballroom crying. Alastair Carstairs was actually crying and I felt so bad but I understood and I think he did too.

Well now uh. aHeM. Thomas and Alastair waiting to be questioned by the Mortal Sword. *Screech* Please, eXcUsE mE, but ahhhhhh. I couldn't sleep that night (I was under the covers reading by the dimming light of my dying flashlight) because I was trying to stifle my screeching. And it was Thomas's first kiss. TwT it was so bootiful. I say I don't like lovey-dovey things but here I am screeching over Thomas and Alastair. They really are cute though. And then Cassie decides to go like, nah, nothing will happen after that let's break them up even though they weren't dating. AND SHE BROKE, MY HEART, ONCE AGAIN.

Wow, that was a pretty long rant. But yeah...I know not many people are going to take the time to read all that but I guess I wanted to rant to someone about that. None of my friends have read Chain of Iron. Well, I least I don't think so... And it's 1:40 AM and I have classes tomorrow so I should probably go to sleep but I'm too busy crying over Thomas and Alastair. Or Alastair and Thomas. Strangely, both sound equally nice.

Chain of Iron Spoilers

It’s been a week since i read it but i’m still not over chain of iron! I just wanted to talk about some characters and i’m gonna start with Alastair, gosh i love him, i love how he supports his sister and love her unconditionally, i love how he cares about his family, i love how he followed Thomas for the patrols bcoz he was worried about him, i love how he don’t wanna be anyone’s secret, i love how he loves Thomas enough to let him go bcoz he thinks Merry thieves will not accept him and i can go on and on. So in general I didn’t have any problems with his character.

Now Matthew, my second favourite character from the book! So apparently half of the people are hating on him bcoz he came in between jordelia. But guys, it is not his fault at all.. and personally i like Matthew and Cordelia dynamic more sometimes bcoz we got to know how their friendship developed through out the series and how they both have a healthy relationship but i still agree on the point that jordelia should be the endgame and fairstairs should have a platonic relationship. And I really, i really wanted atleast one paragraph from Matthew’s POV but we didn’t get it and it makes me anxious about the next book. Is he gonna be killed?become a down worlder? get strip of his ruins? we don’t know! and him missing from the family tree doesn’t help abt it at all. I’m worried abt him the most bcoz.. we don’t get to know what is going on inside his pretty little head bcoz we don’t get his POV. Alas, I just wish he starts loving himself till the end of the series.

Now Cordelia, she is one of my favourite protagonist of all time (after Tessa) and I loved her in Chog but in Choi she was like too perfect aside for the fact that she had terrible communication with other characters (accept for Matthew). And I loved the scene where she demanded James to kiss her to take a revenge. But overall I love love Cordelia.

James, poor James Herondale. It’s like I didn’t like him much in chog bcoz of all the hurt he caused (unintentionally) to Cordelia. But in the second book he totally had me simping over him. And i’ll love to see a confrontation scene between James and Cordelia & James and Matthew in Chot.

Lucie, Lucie, Lucie I personally love her but I am not necessarily happy with the choices she made in the book. I just didn’t like the fact that she had a completely different storyline going on and wasn’t interecting much with Cordelia and Merry thieves in the book. Otherwise i love her and Jesse.

Christopher Lightwood? I fucking adore him and just want more of his scenes in the next book.

Anna&Ariadne (kamala).. tbh i was so excited about them in Choi but they sought of disappointed me. Like Anna was a complete arsehole to Ariadne.. I understand she was heartbroken by Ariadne when she agreed to marry charles. But it’s 20th century we are talking about, not everyone is comfortable with their sexuality like Anna is and she should understand it.

Thomas Lightwood? I just wanna see him happy.

Grace Blackthorn.. I don’t loath her but I don’t like her either lol.

And about Chain of thorn i so want a big twist or something in that one, TLH is a character driven story so I don’t think a plot twist is something which is gonna surprise me. Idk i always like the unexpected ending and that is one of the reasons why i love tid( who could have expected Jem to become a silent brother? And Tessa getting a happy ending with both of them. When i read the clockwork angel i was so sure she’s gonna end up with Will.) So if everyone is gonna end up like as mentioned in family tree i’ll be disappointed. And doing some heartbreaking stuff with Matthew is soughta predictable as well, so overall I just wanna be surprised by the ending.
