Cabinet of Curiosities Opinions
Roland (Lot 36) is not a neo-Nazi and the hair wreath is not made from the hair of concentration camp victims.
I didn't think this needed to be stated, since he called the Wolmar family evil, which he definitely wouldn't have done if he agreed with them. But apparently some people see "German guy talking about Nazis" and assume he's one himself. Weird.
As for the hair wreath, such things were popular in the 19th century, not the 1930s-40s. I went looking and couldn't find any extant examples from that era. Given the presence of other antiques from that period in the storage unit, like the summoning table, it makes far more sense for the wreath to be an earlier family heirloom. At the very least, even if it WERE some perverse latter-day craft project made by Dottie or her mother or something, there would be no reason for Roland and Agatha to assume that. So they'd probably believe it was innocent even if it wasn't.
2. Emilia is an avenging angel sent to test people like Nick.
This is a bit more of a stretch, but bear with me. When he gives her the lock, she says (in Spanish) "What kind of man are you?" An understandable response to him being a racist asshole, but to me it sounds like she's saying it in a measuring way, as if she's really wondering. Later, in her final appearance, the light behind her umbrella gives her a halo effect. And condemning him to be devoured by a demon he set loose seems like a pretty fitting thing for an angel to do if she's seen that he's past helping.
(This take brought to you by: whiny pissbabies on Reddit going on about "well he's not THAT bad and even if she couldn't see the demon, she KNEW the loan shark was after him so she should have REALIZED he was in real danger and let him out!!! the clearly symbolic racial-, gender-, and class-disadvantaged person in this 45-minute fictional story is the TRUE bad guy here, not the man who was listening to a white nationalist radio show and agreeing with it!")
3. Stacy's coworkers (The Outside) weren't actually that bad.
She feels isolated from them because they have nothing in common to talk about. We never see them actively being mean to her; just not being her best friend- and nobody is obligated to befriend coworkers if they don't want to. They invite her to the party, so clearly they do think of her. Sure, the one lady reacts badly to being given a taxidermy duck for Christmas, but...taxidermy IS a pretty contentious gift. Not something I would spring on someone at all. Stacy was just doing her best, so I don't blame her either. It's just an awkward situation all around, that's nobody's fault.
I feel like the point is not "this woman's bitchy coworkers drove her to change herself." It's that marketing and the media cause women to be internally critical on a deeply harmful level, even if nobody else is actually being critical of us.
4. The Outside has themes of sublimated homosexual desire.
Stacy has a tense relationship with her hsband, idolizes the women at work who are constantly touching and stroking each other, and literally makes out with the feminine-looking Allo Glo creature in the basement. I mean. Come on. This one seems like a no-brainer to me. I don't think that's the PRIMARY theme, but it's definitely there.
6. Nancy (The Murmuring) had something to do with Ava's death.
One theory I saw online was that she'd rolled over on her while co-sleeping, since the ghost she mistakes for baby Ava appears in the bed next to her. I'd believe it, and it definitely adds another layer to her sympathy with the mother ghost- who I just learned is named Claudette in the credits. Even though I very much doubt she did anything that purposeful.
7. Alternatively, Ava was not a baby when she died.
Edgar and Nancy are both on the older side to be new parents (Essie Davis was 52 during filming, though the character is probably somewhat younger), and Nancy has clear experience talking to older children when she addresses the little boy ghost. Ava's death was recent, so while I suspect the intention is that she was a surprise baby to a couple who assumed they'd never have any, she could have been any age within childhood.
8. Ava was named after birds.
"Avis" means bird in Latin and her parents are ornithologists. It just makes sense.

An Introduction(Spoilers for Pikmin 1, 2 & 4)[21+]
Screenshot sourced from Pikipedia Screenshot credited to Kirbys-adventure(Uploaded Aug. 5th, 2017)
On August 30th, 2004, Pikmin 2 was released in North America.
I turned eleven the very next week.
I had already played the first game but was terrible at it and couldn't get past the third area. I still got a lot of mileage out of it, though, doing the same thing I did for every video game I played: restarting the file to experience the feeling of making progress again.
However, I vividly recall reaching the fourth area during one of these playthroughs and getting pretty excited about it.
That all came to a screeching halt when, on my first day in the area, a bunch of Pikmin I sent back to base started being killed by something, and by the time I got there, the few that remained were already being absorbed into some horrible, dark, blobby creature.
Seeing it freaked me out so bad I turned the game off and quit playing it altogether, thinking it was just an ordinary encounter I was expected to deal with.
It wouldn't be until a couple years later that I learned this enemy is only meant to appear after the player activates it; its presence here was actually a glitch.
Despite my experience, I got the sequel at some point (possibly for Christmas 2004), and given the focus of this account, I felt like providing a video of the intro, along with a written summary of the game's plot.

Pikmin 2 picks up where the last game ended: with a humanoid alien named Olimar(オリマー) departing the uncharted planet he crash-landed on, and returning to his homeworld of Hocotate. Unfortunately, upon his arrival, he's told the company he works for is going under after one of its newest employees, Louie(ルーイ), lost a shipment of golden carrots to a giant space bunny.
The company's president took out a massive loan to cover the loss, but without a way to repay it all, he's mired the company in debt. Fortunately, an object Olimar found on the uncharted planet is considered valuable enough to pay a bit of it off. With even more such treasures left there to discover, he and Louie are ordered to salvage enough of it until the debt's been paid off.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
I probably played the sequel even more than the first despite being even worse at it. I couldn't get past the second area and resorted to my "restart method" more frequently than usual.
However, I vividly recall reaching the third area during one of these playthroughs and getting pretty excited about it.
That all came to a screeching halt when, after stepping right outside my base, a giant mechanical spider came out of nowhere and started stomping my Pikmin to death.
For those who don't know, this encounter cannot occur in this area until at least 30 in-game days have elapsed.
It seriously took me at least that long to reach the third area in one of these playthroughs.
Anyone who has played this game, or hell, just watched a typical playthrough of it, will immediately know how ludicrous this is.
You may also be wondering what the hell I spent all that time doing, given there's not much you can do, and I honestly cannot remember. All I remember is the giant spider because it freaked me out so bad I turned the game off and quit playing it altogether.
I eventually went back and beat the first game, but never bothered with the second. I can't say I gained an affinity for either, and once I hit my early twenties, I lost interest in playing video games and preferred just watching others play them online.

At the same time — in 2014, I believe — I discovered a Tumblr account called Souichi Presents, which featured reviews/overviews of horror stories, primarily the works of Junji Itō(伊藤 潤二). It was run by a guy named Frankie (aka friendlyfrankenstein) who, in 2020, teamed up with a friend of his known as Bugs (aka facefullabugz) to start a streaming channel on Twitch under the account facefullabugs.
I didn't start watching them until early 2023 after seeing this supercut*1 of their 2022 streams made by a person who goes by bubblymiilk, and the first one I watched was for Pikmin 2. I recalled very little about the game and still didn't care for the franchise much, but my familiarity compelled me enough to watch them play it. *1. Uploaded on Jan. 7th, 2023
If you'd like to watch it as well, the VODs have all been uploaded onto their YouTube channel Frankenbug VODs, but (as of the time I'm posting this) you can actually still watch the VODs on Twitch*1 if you prefer! Though, as a heads-up, the first VOD in the series doesn't actually begin with them playing Pikmin 2 but another game called Balan Wonderworld, so if you just want to get right to Pikmin 2, here's a link to 3:41:39 in the stream. *1. While watching Frankie and Bug's playthrough, I recognized that the treasure above was a game for the Disk System, a Japanese-only disk-based add-on for Japan's equivalent to the NES, the Famicom.

Specifically, it was a copy of The Mysterious Murasame Castle, a (prior to 2014) Japanese-only Nintendo game released on April 14th, 1986.
I'd heard of this game from other sources before, but if I ever realized it appeared in Pikmin 2 before this, I'd totally forgotten. I looked into it a bit more online, and learning it was still a Japanese exclusive back in 2004 got me thinking about topics related to localization, which eventually led me to realize what a dilemma this treasure posed from a localizer's perspective.
The Cosmic Archive is intended to invoke nostalgia from an older demographic familiar with this era of Nintendo's history. Meanwhile, a younger generation might recognize it as an object from a past era.
However, in countries like America, where the Disk System and Murasame Castle hadn't been released, this intent is totally lost on the average person. Additionally, learning this stuff on your own wasn't as easy in 2004, as home computers still weren't too commonplace. Even then, though, knowing what this object is still wouldn't elicit the same response it would for the average person living in Japan, who would grasp its intentions more immediately.
A localizer's (theoretical) goal is to try bridging that cultural gap somehow, but doing so in this context is tricky. I mean, this isn't just a case of translating some text into a new language while capturing the spirit of the original text- it's replacing a whole object with another object that achieves that task.
Of course, this would take considerable time and effort for something so minor that it seemed (to me) like something Pikmin 2's localizers wouldn't even try to attempt. Besides, it's not like localizers always need to go so far, and even if the whole nostalgia angle is lost, the treasure still retains every other aspect ascribed to it in the Japanese script. Sometimes, that's just about the best a translator can do.
The notion, however, made me curious if any other treasures in the North American version remained unlocalized, so I looked up a list of them online, picking the one on Pikipedia.

That's when I learned a good handful of treasures in the North American version serve as replacements for treasures in the Japanese version. Furthermore, while several of these replacements (like the ones above) merely reuse the same model asset but with a different texture applied each time,
Screenshots sourced from Pikipedia Both screenshots credited to Mabeloid(Photo A: Sep. 29, 2023|Photo B: Oct. 7, 2023)
some are new models with little to no resemblance to their Japanese counterparts.
From this, I presumed the few unlocalized treasures only remained because the CG modelers lacked the time to craft new ones. (Note: I think this might have only been the case for some treasures now, but that's all I'll say about that here.)
These presumptions got me thinking about what these treasures could have been replaced with. However, I found myself simultaneously more intrigued by other details I noticed while going through all the treasures.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
First, I need to explain that every piece of treasure is placed into a "Series," and each of those follows a specific theme. For example, the Cosmic Archive is sorted into the "Blast from the Past Series," which revolves around Nintendo games and gaming devices that are (mostly) from the company's past.
However, it seemed to me that within each "Series," many treasures were divided into unspoken sub-series, each revolving around things like conceptual bonds, conceptual contrasts, size differentials, etc.
Screenshot sourced from Pikipedia Screenshot credited to Waffles(Uploaded May 15, 2017)
For example, the Cosmic Archive is paired with the Dream Architect, a recreation of an LCD game Nintendo released back in 1980 titled Ball. To explain how both are connected, however, I'll need to cover another feature of Pikmin 2: the "Treasure Hoard."
Screenshot sourced from Pikipedia Screenshot credited to Twins1105(Uploaded Jul. 18, 2024)
The "Treasure Hoard" is an in-game archive allowing you to view the treasures you've collected, as well as a few statistics on each one.

Each treasure also has a designated journal entry written by Olimar. These often feature his thoughts on the treasure or just some personal anecdote that's relevant to it in some way.

Furthermore, your rocket AI will craft a sales pitch for each treasure in a completed "Series."
I mention these because they often enhance whatever binds a particular sub-series. For the treasure I'm focusing on, they help communicate their primary connection: Nintendo devices with features inaccessible to the characters.
In the Cosmic Archive's case, both characters specify how they can't access the data stored on the diskette. With the Dream Architect, they specify that the device is broken, although it's also possible the batteries in it are just dead- if it even has batteries at all. I mean, it's not like the characters would have any idea it needs them, so who's to say.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Both devices are also framed as technologically advanced. The Cosmic Archive's name refers to the rocket AI's belief that it stores all information about the universe. Its sales pitch even states that the contents are inaccessible because the sheer amount of information makes it unprocessable. (It's 112 kilobytes of data…)
The Dream Architect's name also conveys this, though not as clearly in the international versions. In the Japanese version, the treasure's name literally translates to "Dream Ex Machina," which is obviously a play on deus ex machina, which is Latin for 'god from the machine.' It's likely that 'Architect' is being used to substitute this intent, as it invokes God being the creator of all things.
This isn't the only time the English translation obfuscates an association that was a bit clearer in the Japanese version. However, it was likely only done here because they couldn't include anything overtly religious in the translation. (Although the English version of Pikmin 2 does feature something like that, which I'll get into at…some point.)
Also, I feel the need to point out just how self-aggrandizing this is. It is Nintendo framing the devices they've made as some object of reverence; it's hilariously conceited.
Though I will concede, there is some self-awareness to it, as it's implied the rocket AI is just making shit up to make these unusable devices more appealing. Its sales pitch for the Dream Architect basically says: "Yeah, this thing doesn't work, but imagine how cool it'd be if it did!" Even so, I don't doubt there's at least a degree of sincerity here.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
There's at least one more potential connection for these two, but it requires a bit of context.
Screenshot sourced from Video Game Sage Screenshot credited to silentmonkee(Uploaded Mar. 31, 2021)
In Japan, Ball was actually the first in a line of LCD devices made by Nintendo collectively called Game & Watch, which could be used as clocks in standby mode.
The first five Game & Watch had silver-colored casings, but starting with the sixth entry, they opted for gold-colored ones.
Screenshot sourced from Video Game Sage Screenshot credited to silentmonkee(Uploaded Mar. 31, 2021)
The aesthetic change also helped mark a few hardware revisions, such as a settable alarm and a foldable kickstand on the back.
The games also offered a fairer challenge by featuring a mistake resetting mechanic. With the silver models, if you screwed up during a play session, it'd be tallied up in a 'Mistake Counter,' and reaching three mistakes reset your score to zero. For the revised model, though, if you score a certain amount of points during a play session, the tally resets to zero.
Lastly, because this hardware revision marked the end of an era for the line (and also possibly because none of the silver models were ever manufactured with all of these revisions while retaining the same build,) Nintendo decided to separate these two models into the "Silver series" and "Gold series."
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Now, the diskette isn't gold-colored, but it is a color commonly used in depictions of gold, and I feel that's intentional. It would also be far from the only example of Pikmin 2's developers pairing something silver with something gold.

Of course, that raises the question of why they didn't just pair it with a Gold series G&W. I mean, it'd certainly be easier to slightly modify an existing CG model than create a brand-new one.
There are numerous possible explanations for this choice. For example, it could have been done to bring more visual variety to the treasure you're collecting. Another example would be they made one model before the other and only noticed the comparison they could make afterward.
However, upon noticing these sub-series, I came to a specific conclusion because I realized that some treasures either lacked any discernable pairing(s) or had one(s) I considered a stretch.
The 'Cosmic Archive+Dream Architect' sub-group would be an example of the latter, as both have a more obvious pairing. I've already gone into the Dream Architect's, but for the Cosmic Archive, you'd think they'd pair it with a cartridge-based Famicom game, right?
Again, there are numerous ways to explain these choices. For the one-offs, it could be they felt certain treasures would stand out more if they were on their own. For the odd pairings, maybe they simply felt any connection was good enough.
However, my immediate conclusion was that this signified unfulfilled ideas: that the developers wanted to give each of these treasures a pairing but couldn't for some reason or had to settle for less sensible options.
This got me wondering: what would suit these treasures best? This query, bolstered by my ponderings over how specific treasures could be localized, convinced me to craft a list of treasures for the North American version that took my observations into account.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
When I decided to do this, I did not think about how long it might take to make.
I just inherently assumed it wouldn't take long- that I'd spend a few days on it at most and then move on. I was only doing it for fun and didn't plan to take it that seriously because, as I said, I'm not a Pikmin fan. I don't even know why I was fixating on these questions.
While this project never grew into anything too extravagant (and I don't plan it to), it did become more involved than I anticipated, and it wasn't until last April I settled on something I was pleased with.
That's because I ended up crafting custom versions for each major regional version of Pikmin 2 that altered more about the game than just adding a couple treasures. I also crafted a custom version of Pikmin 2's HD remaster that features all the additions in my custom versions and alters several treasures just like the real remaster does. I also crafted a rough custom version of Pikmin 4 because that game takes several cues from Pikmin 2, to the point where it felt negligent to not think of such a thing.
At some point in the process, I got the idea of sharing my custom versions of Pikmin 2 online, as I thought some folks might get a kick out of them. My guide through them will double as overviews of the real versions, as knowing their contents is necessary to explain decisions I made.
Also, while I plan to occasionally mention the other Pikmin games and cover stuff in my custom Pikmin 4, I won't be covering any of them extensively.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
That out of the way, the rest of this post is going to revolve around the North America-only NES game Monster Party, which was released in June 1989 and developed by Human Entertainment (who went by Sonata*1 during part of its development) and published by Bandai.
Screenshot sourced from Moby Games Screenshot credited to The Game Boy(Uploaded Dec. 27, 2010)
Before I can get into this game, I must say up-front that it's best experienced going in fairly blind. I played it (via emulation) for the first time recently, and all the years I spent committing its most worthwhile aspects to memory did it no favors.
I realize that's obvious, but I only did that because I thought I'd never play this game. I've never owned an NES and was only vaguely aware of emulation when I learned about it back in…2007, I think? But, yeah, that's why I opted to experience it second-hand, and by the time I was fully aware of emulation, I'd hit my early twenties, so…yeah.
Saying that, though, I doubt I'd have enjoyed it that much more if I knew nothing about it.
The game's biggest flaw is that much of it sees you navigating drab, simplistic, and fairly unchallenging levels designed to make you stay in them longer to ensure you don't beat the game in less than an hour. Some are more egregious about this than others, but all carry this quality to some extent.
Furthermore, every level (or "Round" as they're called in-game, which I'll be sticking with from here-on) is filled with bosses you need to beat, some being more difficult than anything else you'll encounter and will likely be what kills you. Thankfully, you have infinite continues and a password feature, so you don't have to restart the whole game if you die. However, dying puts you back at the start of a Round with all the bosses reset, which can make the game's structure somewhat monotonous.
However, as I said, the Rounds themselves aren't that difficult, and I still managed to beat this game in only three hours on my first playthrough, and subsequent playthroughs only took around one hour. And I don't say that to brag, like, I might have gotten better at games back in the day, but I never got great, and this was the first one I've played in a long-ass time. I was really expecting it would take way longer to beat, and the fact it didn't, I feel, says something about it.
I also find it telling my later playthroughs are so much shorter than the first. The reason for that is I was stuck on one Round for a while until I figured out how to navigate it; once I did, it was no trouble at all.
I also probably could have shaved a bit more time off that first playthrough if I hadn't engaged in two things I remembered from discussions and videos online but pretended I didn't so that my first playthrough could be as authentic as I could make it. One of them, I won't go into here, but the other I will because, honestly, I'd feel bad if I didn't.
As stated before, every Round in the game has bosses you need to beat, but "Round 7" can be completed without beating all its bosses. If you beat them all anyway, you'll activate a glitch that soft-locks the game. Of course, you can still have enemies kill you to reset the bosses like always, so it's not like you have to reset the whole console or anything. (or you can just use save states if you're emulating it.)
Anyway, it was hard for me to decide whether I should recommend this game or not. I mean I know I just spent several paragraphs criticizing it, but honestly I feel this game's moderate difficulty somewhat alleviates its flaws. Like, if it was harder while retaining its boring level design and somewhat repetitive structure, then yeah I'd just call it a waste of time to play. As it stands, I think it just barely passes the grade into me giving it a cautious recommendation. (Though, I also can't deny I'd sooner just recommend watching a playthrough of it. There's tons of them out there.)
Now, I'd say it's about time I finally went into this game in a little more detail IN THE NEXT POST!
You see, I wrote the early drafts for this post on WordPad and not on Tumblr itself (I hate writing posts on Tumblr itself), and I've had very little experience on the platform, so I didn't know posts had a photo limit of thirty.
I structured my post around having far more than thirty photos.
Rather than re-edit it yet again, I've elected to just split it into three seperate posts, with the second part right here!
However, should you be parting way here, thank you for reading this far.

The Promises I’m Making (2025)
After the absolute garbage fire that was my life in 2024, I'm kind of just sitting here like... "What do?" What do I even try to focus on for 2025? Will the promises I make right now even be relevant in two months' time, given how many plot twists my life has become prone to?
There's also definitely a correlation between not having money and struggling to come up with resolutions. Why does everything in life cost so much?
Please 2025... let me live in uninteresting times...
2025 Promises
1) Ensure the plumbing repairs in the Utah house are completely finished and the ceiling/floors are restored.
2) Pay back as much of the loan I had to take out as quickly as possible to reduce the monthly payments.
3) Have the AC unit in the Texas house replaced and paint the ceiling where there are water spots from the leaks.
4) Clean up the kitchen area of my Texas house; there is a bunch of kitsch accumulating on the far edge of the counters that I just don't need in a kitchen.
5) Get all the bookshelves/books organized in my Texas house.
6) Clean off my back patio/car port area in the Texas house so I can park my car there again.
7) Call a handyman and have the Texas house bathroom faucets replaced.
8) Clean out the Texas house closets and figure out what to do with all the old boxes like my old computer boxes that I've been cramming in there.
9) Put up a shelf in my room for my figures so that they're not completing clogging up the top of the dresser.
10) Fix the damaged spot on the backyard fence of the Texas house.
11) Clean out all the drawers in my desk/side tables/etc. What is even in there???
12) Take better care of the Texas house lawn, like fighting weeds and trimming the hedge more often.
13) Assemble my new display case and actually successfully organize/display all my plushies. I have... too many plushies...
14) Change the burned-out lightbulbs in the recessed lighting in the Texas house ceiling. It’s like twelve feet high and the lightbulb changer stick I bought didn’t work, so I’m going to have to find someone with a ladder. Save me, handyman. Save me.
15) Help my brother reorganize his furniture in the room he's staying currently; dude has never heard of the concept of maximizing space and it shows.
16) Help my parents tear out the carpet in my old childhood bedroom.
17) Actually use the yoga mat I bought forever and a day ago. This year... for sure...
18) Walk the dog more. Even if the dog herself doesn't like walking when it's hot out lol.
19) Lose at least twenty pounds.
20) Do a complete re-read of Noragami and post some of my closing thoughts on the series.
21) This is super nerdy, but my bro got me the FFXIV cookbook and made me promise to actually use it, so I guess I’d better at least try to make something from it. (Years later, I'm still... trying... lol)
22) Take at least one decent picture of a wild sea turtle.
23) Reach the new level cap with all jobs in FFXIV. I'm late, whoops.
24) Spend less on gacha games and Starbucks. Gotta save money…
25) Close out my old credit union account and call to check in on closing any old credit cards I might still have.
26) Fully deep clean and vacuum/detail my own car at home. No more of the “It doesn’t make sense to clean it out now; the dog is just going to go back in it.” The dog is always going to go back in it. Clean it, Echo.
27) Complete my follow up medical appointments and handle all medical situations in a timely manner.
28) See at least three new species of birds. Doesn’t matter where, just three new ones!
29) Get a new battery in my watch so I can go back to wearing it.
30) Waste less food; I buy things all the time and then don't get to them before they go bad. It's the worst.
31) Make use of the Sam's Club membership my parents bought me for Christmas.
32) Repair the lovely one-of-kind ceramic plate that my dog broke with kintsugi. I want to try it at least once!
33) Block more people. I know this sounds odd but I have a terrible habit of getting into debates when I see bad takes on social media and honestly there's no point in wasting so much time. I gotta block and move on a lot more lol.
34) Put all the small prints, postcards, and stickers I have collected in my new mini-print books. I can even use up washi tape to decorate too. (Finally, a purpose for the washi tape…)
35) Get the situation with the IT systems at work resolved so that all data can be correctly submitted.
36) Apply for online adjunct positions to help make extra money on the side.
37) Make sure my classes are ready to go before each semester, including properly scheduling the announcements and everything.
38) Buy birthday cards in advance for everyone so I have them available to send when birthdays come around.
39) Draw more this year. Maybe I won't have time to fully line and color artworks digitally, but I should at least not let my tiny amount of art ability wither into nothingness...
40) Write and post something... Anything at this rate, please.
41) Build the pretty koi paper lantern my brother got me, or the Korean temple model my coworker gave me after his trip to Korea.
42) Visit the beach more often... Need relaxation...
43) Take better care of my kitty. It's not like I don't take decent care of her, but I definitely put more effort into doing things with the dog than the cat and I think she is big jealous.
44) Go see at least one play. Live theater is good for the soul.
45) See about removing the PMI from at least one of my house loans to try to save money. I’ve been paying on these loans long enough I shouldn’t need PMI anymore.
46) Take a day trip to Santa Cruz Island with Kacchan.
47) Read the book that has been on my "To read" list for the longest time. I don't know which one that is off the top of my head, but I will finally finish one that has been on the list!
48) Try to go to bed earlier more consistently than last year; I really punished myself with terrible sleep over the last few months and its not helping the health situation.
49) Go through my bookshelves to find books to donate, then donate the books to people's little free libraries.
50) I will keep my promises!
Good luck, 2025’s me!
#irl stuff#50 promises#new year's resolutions#gosh this was soooo hard this year#it's crazy how much MONEY every hobby or improvement project costs#coming up with things that wouldn't cost a fortune took forever#wish me luck!

An Update on Your Friendly Neighborhood Alexa
It’s been a while!! I’ve missed out on a lot of discourse and drama (good!) but also on friends’ content, inside jokes, and memes (bad!!). Here’s where I’ve been for the past… year, basically!!
The biggest news: My husband and I were house-hunting for several months, which meant getting my student loans out of default, fixing my credit score, and then the stress of finding houses, falling in love with houses only for the sales to fall through, then finding a livable place in an okay location, working with multiple lenders to find an okay enough mortgage, price negotiations, sorting out our apartment lease to either break it or have two monthly payments, working as much overtime as possible to afford the down payment, and (FINALLY) moving out of our apartment and into our home. This all happened by December.
Then the usual holiday season, which meant working MORE overtime for bills, gifts, and travel to family members. Then on we got into a minor accident miles away from family where our car was undrivable in winter conditions. We got home several days late to a 40-degree home and find out our furnace died. The cats were okay, but definitely stressed about the cold and that we were gone for so long (weekend trip became an almost week-long trip). Did you know that finding emergency HVAC on Christmas is difficult? I was spoiled by apartment life.
After the holidays was kind of a fugue state where I worked, slept, and rarely socialized outside of a small group of friends. March and May were especially rough for personal reasons. I definitely self-isolated myself without realizing it. I don’t even have any art or writing to show for it, since I didn’t make anything.
Got back into therapy, my meds are getting adjusted, and I was diagnosed with ADHD and PTSD. I’m working on getting back in touch with the friends I made through this fandom, but being away for so long built up a huge amount of anxiety about not knowing what’s going on, causing a self-perpetuating cycle.
I’m now at a place where I can get past that for the most part, but the guilt is still there.
I’m hoping I’ll be able to post regularly again, along with drawing and writing.

Author James Phillips Published January 22, 2012 Word count 419 Most people are finding difficulty at time of scarcity of money and if Christmas is ahead of it then it leads to get them depressed. With lack of money they cannot be able to arrange everything that is required to celebrate Christians. People who have got bad credit scores are facing much difficulty at time of scarcity as no one…

I think my sister might be mad at me.
Yesterday was her birthday and I texted her to wish her a happy birthday and didn't get a response. Yeah, she might have been busy, but there also might be more to it than that.
Last year she got a new car (mainly because her boyfriend's ancient dog either barfed or shit in her car and they couldn't get the smell out, though she was already planning on replacing it the next year) and posted all about it on Facebook. Which is fine. I posted about my new car when I got it too.
But then a week or two later, I talked to our dad and he asked me if she told me he cosigned on a car for her.
Obvs, she didn't mention that on Facebook (because it's definitely not anyone's business), but yeah, I had no idea. And I knew this was going to be a bad idea.
So when I was in high school and lived with our dad, our mom's car died and she needed to get a new one. She called my dad from the dealership and asked him to cosign for her. Her ex husband. What I didn't realize what that her credit was so bad, she couldn't even get a loan with a cosigner. My dad had to take the loan out in his name. He never told me this was the case (and my mom never admit it) until years later.
My mom, being my mom, only made a few payments on the car before she stopped. And since the loan was in my dad's name, he had to pay it or it'd fuck up his credit.
I had really hoped my sister wouldn't do that to my dad, but we found out at Christmas that she did. My dad had gotten us a $300 gift card to Menard's and Spouse and I said, "Dad, that's too much!" to which he responded, "Well, I've been helping [sister] with her car payments, so..."
Spouse and I were really pissed. Spouse never met my mom, but has heard the fucked up stories from my childhood (they had similar experiences with their mom, but not on the level that I did), so they were equally concerned. Plus they're friends with my sister on Facebook, so they see all the "Look what I got" and annual Disney trip posts from her (yes, they go to Disney almost every year and usually do another vacation with just the 2 of them as well).
My sister's excuses were that her dog needed a dental and had half his teeth removed and that the ancient dog died.
Now, the dental thing I kinda understand because Lola needs one and I had been putting it off because of the cost (I think they quoted me $2500), but Spouse and I decided to take out a Care Credit card to pay for it. We wondered why my sister didn't do the same, though she might not have had good enough credit to do it.
The ancient dog thing was a bunch of bullshit. See, her boyfriend (who she's been with close to 10 years at this point) and his ex wife share custody of their son and the ancient dog. Ex wife is remarried to some sort of finance guy who works at a national bank and has since had 3 more kids with him. They're not hurting for money. But the dog was not actually my sister's and therefore not her responsibility. The cost of his end of life expenses was not on her at all. Half of it was on her boyfriend. Sure, they share living expenses (and he's a teacher, so I get that he doesn't have a huge salary), but I don't think she really had to personally contribute to the dog's expenses. She did buy a bunch of memorial shit for the dog, though (pillows, blankets, ornaments, etc).
Spouse and I really wanted to rip her a new one about this, but I talked to my therapist about it and she said to talk to my dad first. And I do think he agreed that he needs to be more firm with her, even though he's a pushover. I expressed my concern. I gave him some suggestions to get her to get her shit together so she can make her payments (offer budgeting help, suggest she do what I do and have money for the car payment deposited in a separate account she doesn't look at and put it on auto pay so she doesn't have the think about it). He seemed receptive to the idea. I just hope he follows through. I'll have to check in on him and see how the conversation went (or if it even happened).
I will be the first to admit I'm not the greatest with money (which is why I don't have $2500 in savings to pay for Lola's dental, partially because I spent $800 on her ass over a year ago and that depleted it quite a bit, plus am still paying off the 20% of my surgery that my insurance didn't cover). But I'm trying. I don't think my sister is trying, though. She's being like our mom, buying things to keep up appearances and not thinking about important things like her car payment. She got the attitude from our mom that if she can't take care of it, she can find someone who will. And that's not ok. Especially because my dad doesn't make a ton of money either. He really can't afford to be paying my sister's car payment each month. There's a reason why he bought an older van with high mileage. He didn't want to be spending a lot on a car payment. And now my sister is trying to get him to do that for her and it's just not ok.
At least my dad agreed that he has to do something. I just hope he has the balls to do it, because he's normally not that kind of guy.

OSRR: 3402
a few things and then a rant.
i went to the eye doctor today, to see (ha) them about my retina and my recovery from eye surgery. it's going well, and i'm glad that it's going. i thought it more or less stopped, but the doctor says that you just gotta trust the process, and if there's anything i've learned from watching videos of artists and artisans doing their thing, it's to trust the process. so i am.
they dilated my eyes - both of them - so i couldn't drive immediately after. which was fine, so i took a break for a while in my car and left just before my therapist called, who i talked to on my way home. we talked about the week i've had and things i've noticed this year around the season as it's the first time i haven't been in school or preparing for school at the holidays and how that's making a difference in how i feel.
the timing worked out perfectly for that conversation; i hung up about a minute out from home. and then mom and i went to look for fabric and then my back started hurting and the rest of the afternoon was kind of miserable.
we stopped at the farm shop and picked up some eclairs because i'd been craving them, which was really nice. and then we went home and i was still in pain, so i grabbed the heating pad and went upstairs to lie down and use the heat on my back. i ended up napping after using it for a while. i did shut it off before i fell asleep, though.
i woke up to the smell of onions and a call for dinner. i helped get the table ready for us and got things out and put things down and all sorts of stuff. dinner was good. and after dinner, i helped bring up the boxes of christmas stuff and then take out the leaves from the table. my back was still hurting. eventually i had to stop and i laid down on the floor to try to get it to stop hurting, which worked for a bit.
i really hope my back doesn't hurt tomorrow like it did today. today was pretty miserable because of it.
and now for the rant.
tl;dr: i'm grumpy about money.
i'm really tired of working at the school. i really want to quit. it's frustrating that i can't, though, because i have too many bills to pay and i don't make enough from one job so i have to work three to make ends kind of meet as well as be able to eat and afford gas. it sucks. why does this have to be so fucking hard.
i hate being broke. because i was sick for a bit, it kinda fucked my finances for a long time. so my goal is to not get sick. and to not be out of work. like i could use an injection of two thousand dollars and that might help me recover - the buffer i used to have is completely gone. and so is the money i was given to fix my car. i used it to catch up after being sick.
but then i also have doctors appointments to pay for, and come next year i have to pay for my health insurance as WELL as my doctors appointments, and on top of that and gas and food and my credit cards that have been maxed out because i had to live a few years back without pay for a few months, AND my student loans, im fucked. i don't even spend that much on things that i "don't need." like i have netflix and i have prime and i have a few news subscriptions, but all of that totals less than $50 a month. that's my smallest credit card payment.
but i have to get gas and i have to eat and even though im bad at eating regularly i still try my best. it's frustrating because most of my priorities are fucked in the first place, because i know i need to have such a significant amount set aside for my loans every month.
this is why i think university should be free.
there is absolutely no reason for me - and so many others, for that matter - to be shackled with debt to get a good education simply because we are poor. debt is punishment for being poor. high interest rates are punishment for being poor. lack of access to healthful food is punishment for being poor. and it doesn't help that it gets compounded onto by poor health, bad sleeping habits, and an increased affection of the wealth effect - which is that when money comes in, it gets spent quickly, but it's even worse for poor people because it's not even there in the first place since it goes immediately to paying debts - among many other things.
society and culture in the united states punish people for being poor from the get-go. i'm pretty sure that that's what made me as much of a leftist as i am.
i hate this place. fuck it.
i'm just glad that joel has enough money for what he needs. he also helps support me when i need it and i couldn't be more grateful. he's got good ideas to help me help myself and he's got a level head on his shoulders and i am so so grateful he's in my life because this shit would be fucking miserable without him.

Okay so loving the notes, tags etc except that one guy who lost his shit for no reason (blocked lol).
I don't want to direct post any tags when ppl said they might delete later BUT they are directly related to some things I didn't elaborate on in the above post but are my personal views on the matter. Also I wanted to respond to some other tags so yanno!
First:
For context I converted to Judaism as an adult, grew up with culturally xtian parents (my mom is like...a witchy lapsed mexican-catholic. Dad is a literal WASP, but also into paganism for awhile there. Idk.) Anyways my mom LOVES Christmas. So so much. She did grow up poor/lower working class. (My mom loves Xmas so much that she got married on December 23rd because the Catholic priest wouldn't do Dec 24th. ...Christmas got a little ruined for her when they divorced. I think it's finally getting better again many many years later.)
The point is, I Grew Up With Santa Is Real and Magical. 100%! And as a baby/little kid (under 7), my parents were still starting out, struggling with debt/student loans, making bad credit card decisions, etc. My mom worked fast food jobs.
but like, eventually, my dad stopped serving in the army, got an MBA on some of those loans he had, and went into managing computer engineers and with time, we became solidly middle class. I was about 7 when my parents bought their first house (instead of us living w/family or in apartments or army apartments), and then my parents divorced when I was about 14? 15? Then I got to live on the literal poverty line because divorce! Isn't that fun?
Anyways the point is that it was my mom, who grew up poor, that had the most investment in Santa. I was talking to a friend last night and she was like "yeah I mean, I eventually figured out people's handwriting so..." and I shook my head like. "No my mom always used her non-dominant hand as Santa. She changed her handwriting." My mom Believes in Santa, to be clear. Literally her philosophy is that Santa is real when we make him real, because Santa is a role — a thing parents can be/do, and the love and experience and wonder of childhood is all real, even if Kris Kringle, actual man from the North Pole is a fairy tale and made up." Her stance is that parents are "Santa's helpers" insofar as parents/guardians fulfilling Santa's role, passing on the story, etc all "help" Santa act, & that's not really a lie. It's a fairy tale, it's fiction, but Santa is just a collective belief that people take up and enact and that isn't a lie.
I suspect my mom is actually more sad that if I had children I don't want to do Santa than like she cares about me currently being like "I don't believe Jesus was a Messiah even a little bit."
Like. When I was maybe 3? My grandpa dressed as Santa to show up to the Christmas party for myself and my cousins/my mom's baby cousins. Picture the most adorable Mexican abuelito in the FULL mall Santa get up with a GIANT red sack for all the little kids and also his face was powered white so y'know. I was three. I didn't see under the massive white beard and wig I knew him. I met Santa and he was DEFINITELY real. We didn't have a lot of money yet but also this was the 90's and it's not like three year olds could even expect a $300 tablet or whatever.
My parents financial situation improving did mean "Santa" gifts could be a bigger deal as I got older, but they also imposed a 1 Santa gift limit more or less. Again, probably because my mom grew up poor and did not want me to feel better than other kids who got less but were just as "good." I was a very skeptical child so I'm not really sure how long I bought into Santa for, but I definitely Did Not Bring It Up even though I was fairly certain Santa was Mom for years. I mean, if Santa is real, then why do we go and buy angel/Santa gifts for other families and kids? So it's not hard to figure out. Especially since kids inevitably compare everything from gift value to "the rules of how Santa works at my house."
And when we'd finally confirmed I did indeed, Know The Truth (and wouldn't spoil it for my 8 years younger brother) I would be tasked with helping wrap the gifts we bought for other kids as Santa. I still remember helping my uncle do a Santa run to deliver the gifts we'd got to a single working mom cried in the parking lot when we helped her load up her car with presents.
And while I think that's lovely and we should absolutely give charity and help others in need and even just give charity that isn't only practical but instead includes stuff that is valued by joy and delight — I think Santa doesn't have to be the way to do that, and I also think that with the advent of highly expensive digital toys and gifts (above and beyond a barbie dreamhouse), "Santa" is now fully unable to escape capitalist and classist limitations.
Santa used to bring maybe a small toy and then maybe some "sweets" like some oranges, candy canes, etc in stockings, to most kids. But the divide between kids gets bigger and bigger, and the morality of kids gets tied to how much money their parents can afford to spend in fulfilling Santa and that's so deeply shitty to me.
As an adult, I am utterly disillusioned by Santa. Not the joy of parents participating, not kids who get toys they wanted. Not even because parents are lying, because big whoop. But because the fantasy is less and less feasible for kids whose parents don't have money. Because I worked for a bank financial assistance dept trying to help people for awhile, and when you see hundreds of people who go thousands of dollars into debt to maintain Christmas, it sucks!
It's a literal cycle SO MANY Americans go through btw, like to the point where banks/creditors all *know* to account for it. Debt goes up in Nov/Dec for Christmas, people struggle financially in Dec/January, and then Feb-April is when folks try to recover with their tax returns (because a lot of people gamble they will receive enough return in order to pay off or down the debt they couldn't afford). And when your job is "helping people who are financially struggling with getting out of the hole, understanding their budget better," lemme tell you, no one wants to be told: "look, you can't afford this kind of Christmas. It's setting you up to start the new year underwater financially, every single year. It makes you stressed and miserable, and you can't always manage to catch up with your tax return. This is unsustainable and is something you have the power to completely change in order to achieve way more stability for you and your family. It won't fix everything but wow is this gonna help!"
So you don't say that directly. You talk generally about cutting down unnecessary expenses (people rarely willingly consider their Christmas spending as unnecessary), about the plan after the tax return comes in, about how to cut costs of the expenses you do still have.
This isn't the fault of the concept of Santa, but like, Santa is part of this cycle now. And people are MISERABLE doing this debt cycle. Lots of people hate that they feel they HAVE to rack up all this debt to buy big presents and then even more santa presents and they often don't even believe in this holiday religiously! Sure, thoughtful presents are nice, but if everyone was like "actually I can't afford $2,000 in debt this year to make a big Christmas." Most people would feel a lot better! Depression due to Christmas holiday stress is real and measurable and people who know that and hate how it makes them feel STILL keep doing all of it.
So it sucks, Christmas's commercialization and Santa's accidental classism is just...truly awful.
I hate tying morality to class, and I hate making poor kids feel unworthy, I hate that people feel obligated to prepare to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars.
...parents lying to kids about Santa or the tooth fairy doesn't bother me, but like. Santa's elves probably aren't even unionized! Terrible
Do you ever just get obsessed with how cultural Christians (esp atheist or agnostic ones) often openly choose to maintain Santa Claus for their kids?
Like think about this with me:
A group of people who don't actively align themselves with religious life, religious institutions (churches) or other traditions, and may even be total atheists STILL sometimes choose to do Santa Claus for their children, because THEY had Santa Claus as children.
The parents give their child a folk demigod (lesser deity?) of outsized importance to children SPECIFICALLY, and teach them the demigod is definitely totally real. They maintain this active belief as long as possible through childhood. They may encourage and actively engage in this belief with their children moreso than anything else involving the religion it comes from (aside from perhaps, the easter bunny). They know Santa isn't real, does not exist, and is a fiction.
They know their children will learn this demigod is a lie. Subconsciously or consciously, the child then learns that Santa Claus is really only as real as the parent intention to make him real, and the child belief in that truth. The child grows up. Knows Santa is a fiction. And then they make Santa for their children too, because that's the only real thing about Santa — parents knowing it's a fiction and then passing it on anyways.
I just like...am deeply fascinated by this unique cultural training of accepting that the Santa deity isn't dead or anything so extreme, and even though he's made up, he is still extremely important and the fiction gets passed on while explicitly knowing and acting upon the fiction. Parents have to be Santa, they can't just encourage belief and sit back. No no, they must actively CREATE Santa's existence for the belief to work. And they do this willingly!
It's not that I think believing in a myth is unusual in any religion (like we don't need to believe hundreds of thousands of Israelites fled Egypt all at once to observe passover or even to think some Hebrews did flee Egypt and the legend developed from there, or w/e), so much as like, this is an incredibly obvious and well known one that every adult Knows 100% is Not Real, not even based on any kind of reality or possible actual legend, Santa doesn't have all those powers, he does not come to your house or get your wishlist (prayers).
No adult has a pure and genuine belief that Santa is a real being who visits and brings children gifts.
I just want to study everyone who actively is like "I don't believe in God or go to church but like, I'll obviously still do Santa for the kids, that's fun."
(Regina George voice: so you agree? Religion doesn't need to be grounded in imperial facts of science in order to provide substantial benefits to people, foster positive emotions and connections within communities, and for people to derive meaning from it? It doesn't matter if God is real, if you yourself make the benefits of God being real happen for yourself and others?")

So I did and didn’t meet my savings goal lol bouta expose myself 😭
I did transfer almost 16k to my savings account during the year but there’s 8,443 left 😀 butttttt I paid off a 2k loan, and 3k credit cards and a 1k medical bill so that’s mostly where that money went!
The embarrassing part is that I totaled the things that I know I spent money on every single month and my top one was obvi rent (13k) and how much I have savings (8k) and the third on was Amazon at like 5k 💀💀💀 my most expensive month was November around 1k bc I was shopping for Christmas presents for myself and other people lol
After Amazon was DoorDash at 4k and Uber/UberEats at 3k and yes I have excuses for both of those! I was low key depressed most of the year and never touched my stove so that’s how I was feeding myself lol my grocery bill for the entire year was 600 and most of that was towards the end of the year when I started getting my shit together! I also don’t have a car but I didn’t feel like figuring out what Uber price was a ride and what was food so it’s combined.
I wasn’t lying when I said I was a shopaholic bc there’s like 18k that I spent throughout the year on things that aren’t regular monthly things and I’m just like 💀💀 wtf was that even for?? I’m thinking probably going out to restaurants for birthday dinners and brunch or just buying things at regular shops in person or online that I don’t recall on the spot and it’s so embarrassing bc that’s literally a down payment 😀😀
It was interesting to see how May was my most expensive month!! I hit 1k on food 😩 but I remember being down bad and ordering the expensive food was keeping me going so it is what it is lol I also traveled to two graduations that month so I spent a lot on clothes!
I don’t have a specific number that I want to save in 2024 but I think I’m just going to aim for lower monthly spending on Amazon, DoorDash and Uber. Maybe I’ll do the thing where like if you’re about to spend the money on something and it’s not a necessity just send that amount to savings.
As a shopaholic my goal is to save between 10-15k by January 1st 2024 and the first withdrawal to my savings just came out… lol
