When Lockwood had shaken George awake plenty of hours before, it had taken a while for George's brain to catch up to what was happening. By the time it did, he was worriedly watching Lockwood animatedly talking to one of the shop assistants from a nearby telephone booth.
"No idea what it is, or why..." he was telling Lucy. Lockwood was looking around for him. George nervously shifted behind one of the bars of the booth.
"Maybe he's just blowing off some steam?"
Lockwood was now wearing an aggressively tinseled Santa hat while wielding an identical one. George had a pretty good idea who that was for.
"Er, maybe. But perhaps you should come home too. Just in case."
Lockwood had finally spotted George and was frantically waving him over. George did not like the way the Christmas lights were reflecting in Lockwood's eyes.
"For the love of God, Luce, please come home. You can't leave with me...this."
With a bone-deep sigh, George regretfully hung up and emerged from the telephone booth, smiling weakly at Lockwood.
He was more than grateful for his presence of mind earlier, once they had reached Portland Row. Lucy walked in just minutes after Lockwood's unpleasant realisation about Nicholas and guffawed at the sight of the tiny tsunami of gifts.
"Brilliant," George said. "Your turn." He handed Lucy one of the last presents he had been holding and disappeared into the kitchen. She turned towards Lockwood incredulously, who was indignantly standing in front of the sea of presents with his hands on his hips. She raised her eyebrows.
"Oh, okay, I see how it is. I buy a few gi-"
"In what WORLD is this few-"
"- few gifts, and suddenly I'm the bad guy. It's Christmas, but I'm feeling a lot of negativity pent up here."
"Now you're just deflecting." Lucy rolled her eyes as Lockwood started fishing out some receipts from his pockets.
"Can't a guy spend...uh...three-oh. Oh. That's a lot of zeroes."
"Lockwood. How much did you spend?"
"...suddenly, I don't think I know any numbers past ten."
"Lockwood!"
"I couldn't figure out the installment plans! That's Y/N's job!"
George returned to the front door corridor and started picking up some boxes at random and shaking them experimentally.
"Yeah, a fine job you've left her to sort out your debts! No more shopping till Easter. And George, if you don't steal his wallet, I will."
He held up the present he was holding to Lockwood. "Listen, I don't think Y/N's going to want all of these, so how about I -"
"Absolutely not."
George made a rather rude gesture and disappeared back into the kitchen. Lockwood bent over to start clearing a path through the presents to the stairs.
"How was I supposed to know she was only kidding?"
"You know what her sense of humour's like. George and I would have picked up on it in a second."
A very unhappy Lockwood straightened out from under the avalanche of presents.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Tumblr media
A little before lunch, Lockwood knocked on the attic door. It was ajar, and she was reading in a contorted position, all twisted up with a blanket on her rug in the one patch of sunlight in the room, leaning against her bed. She nearly tipped over when Lockwood poked his head in, but caught herself in time.
"Hey."
"Hey."
They stared at each other for a moment. It was the first time they had been alone since the morning's happenings, and it didn't feel as easy to laugh about it all when it was just them. Because the truth was, she didn't find it all that funny. Confusing, yes. Stressful, perhaps. But it wasn't that funny when all the emotions felt excruciatingly true. She closed her book, and Lockwood took another step in, leaning against the bannister.
"I'm sorry about the whole Nicholas thing. I was having a laugh, that's all. I never wanted to make you seem...foolish."
"I don't even remember Nicholas. I mean, that guy."
"Lockwood."
"Who's Loc- I mean, Nicholas? I'm Lockwood."
"Yes, I know."
"And I don't feel foolish. Do you think I'm foolish?"
She smiled at him with rheumy eyes, and his face twisted strangely like he was suppressing his own smile. His eyes drifted to the book in her lap, and the blanket swaddling her face.
"Er, reading?"
"Trying to. The sun's making me feel so sleepy."
"Then move out of the sun. Or take a nap."
She glared at him, scoffing incomprehensibly. "T-take a nap? What am I, 5? And we barely get any sun as it is, I'm trying to thaw my insides."
"Can you even breathe in that?"
She took a wheezing breath. "...yes."
Still, Lockwood sat down next to her, and after a bit of scuffling, she was tipped slightly to her side, leaning against him slightly. She was starting to regret using such a thick blanket through which she barely felt his shoulder. He picked up the book and opened it to the pages her finger was stuck between, and started reading. She closed her eyes and listened. It was some dream to be sitting next to him, without the usual inches between, to hear his honeyed voice ebb and flow, to watch his fingers smooth the pages and fiddle with the edges.
It was mildly disconcerting to hear the shape of his voice take on such a poetic form as if they were in some parallel universe. As if they were in some parallel universe where falling in love was easier than falling asleep.
Tumblr media
A few hours later, she woke up on her bed with a jolt, writhing uncomfortably in her blanket. Once she had managed to peel herself out of it, the embarrassment of having fallen asleep on him sunk in. She needed something to take her mind off it and eventually decided to tinker in her workshop. Down in the basement, she had a small makeshift workshop set up for the occasional tinkering or fiddling with some spare parts. It helped her mind relax when her hands had something to do.
She spent a very peaceful hour regluing some tiny diamonds that had fallen off an old watch. That was, until a door banged open from somewhere else in the house, followed by frantic voices. She looked up in alarm as the footsteps drew closer, blinking owlishly behind her magnifying eyeglasses. Her door swung open and Lockwood walked in, closely followed by a barely suppressed silent, but very agitated, George.
“Y/N, look what I found in George’s suitcase.”
Between the panicked sirens blaring in her head and George’s epileptic hand gestures, it was a miracle she was able to process all those words in the right order.
“…oh?”
A frozen smile sat on her face as her eyes nervously darted between the boys’ faces.
“It’s a snow globe.”
In a miraculous moment of clarity, she realised what George was violently trying to communicate to her: play dumb.
”What’s a snow globe?”
George was positively beside himself.
Lockwood, on the other hand, looked alarmed and touchingly concerned.
“You...you don’t know what a snow globe is? Do they not have snow globes where you’re from?”
“Did you just ask me if they have snow globes…in Hackney?”
He looked slightly miffed, but she couldn’t stay annoyed for long with his foolishly good-natured intentions.
“Look, Lockwood, I’m a little busy here. Is there something I can help you with?”
“I just…wanted to see if you knew anything about this.” He turns it over in his hand, and even with the shelter of anonymity, she finds herself desperately seeking the approval in his eyes that she had been hoping for. “It’s...it's beautiful. When I first saw it, I thought…” He looks up from the snow globe at her, where she’s holding her breath, and she’s distantly aware of how suspiciously invested she must seem in his answer.
“I thought it had to be you.”
She has his answer, but she still hasn’t let go of that breath, as if keeping at bay all the emotions and hope that will come rushing in with her exhale. He watches her face, and she’s too scared to even twitch. Too scared to come right out and say everything the snow globe meant.
“You thought wrong."
George’s seizure-like convulsions returned with a new vigour. Lockwood continues standing there for another minute, and it makes her think he hasn’t heard her until he regretfully bows his head.
“I suppose. Well, I hope your work won’t keep you long. We'll be having tea soon. Let’s- good God, George, are you having a fit?!”
Tumblr media
After their Christmas Eve tea, they exchanged presents, and to call it an awkward affair would have been an understatement. She passed Lockwood the pair of snowman socks. George grudgingly passed him the snow globe. The absurdity of the gifts and their donors made the four of them pause for a moment.
Finally, Lucy broke the quiet by handing out her gifts: mugs with pictures of Inspector Barnes accompanied with cheesy quotes. George's was 'live, laugh, love.' Lockwood's was 'keep calm and carry on.' But everyone was still looking far too solemn, so she nearly had an aneurysm holding back her laughter.
After they all retired to their rooms, she retreated into her chilly workshop. But instead of continuing with her work, she just sat at her desk, brooding a little. A few minutes later, there was a knock on her door as a rather breathless and pink-faced Lockwood poked his head in.
"Still working?"
She shook her head. "What are you doing?"
"Returning the presents." He turned to step out but hesitated. "Are you sure you don't want to keep any?"
"I'm sure that I would hate it if we went bankrupt. Do you need any help?"
"Oh, no, I'll be - yes. Yes, actually. These are a lot of presents. If you could spare the time...I'd really appreciate it."
So after she bundled up in her woollens and wrestled a scarf onto Lockwood, they somehow hurriedly carted the many slightly scuffed shopping bags into the cab, where they only had a brief break to catch their breath, given how close they lived to the shops.
After that, it was a race to hit all the stores before they closed for Christmas Eve. After a couple of rounds, they had developed the fairly efficient system of Lockwood lugging the gifts around while she spoke with the shop assistants. The one drawback to their fine plan, at least for him, was her glancing at the receipts and the too-long numbers at the bottom of them ("Jesus Christ, Lockwood, how did you not have to take out a loan for these? Honestly! Do you think we're made of money?").
Finally, their luck ran out at their very last store, which looked as though it had been closed for hours. She knocked and peered inside feverishly, clutching the very last gift stubbornly.
"No, no, we were so close! Now what do we do?"
"We can come back after the holidays. Or," he gently pried the box out of her fingers, smoothly lifting the top, "you could keep it."
It was a silver charm bracelet, with rapier and lavender charms dangling from the central chain, much like the ones they laid out on jobs. It was beautiful. But she couldn't take it.
"You already gave me a present."
"Have another. A little special something for a special someone."
His cavalier attitude, his foolish smile - in that moment, it was all too much. Her terrible temper flared and she shoved the present into him, forcefully enough to make him stumble a little. She turned and started walking home briskly, fuming silently until he and his long legs finally caught up to her.
"Wha - was it something I said? Y/N? Y/N."
"I don't know, Lockwood." She was sick of his carelessness, sick enough to be a little careless herself, let her tongue run loose. "What have you said? Or haven't said?"
"Y/N, you know I'm terrible at riddles."
"Well, maybe Belinda can help you."
That stuns him enough to make him stop in his tracks. She slows down and, after steeling her fraught nerves, turns around.
"...what does Belinda have to do with anything?"
His hopelessly clueless expression, which typically soothed her anger in their worst fights, only served to infuriate her further here. She walked towards him angrily.
“I didn't want to give you the goddamn snow globe because Belinda exists. All right? Because there are a thousand different girls out there who you’ll like better than me.” There’s a sudden tightness in her chest. With some difficulty, she turns away from him, lightly pressing her sternum. “I can’t compete with them, Lockwood. I won’t let you make me.”
She hears the crunch of the snow under his shoe as he takes a step towards her.
"Belinda is...amazing. She might even be perfect. But even she's just a friend, because...because you exist. And-and I could find...the most perfect girls out there, but the image of you would still be breathing in some corner of my mind. It wouldn't be the same with anyone else. It never is."
She sniffed gently. "This might be the right time to tell you that the snow globe...was from me."
She can't decide if she hates or loves how she can hear the smile in his voice. "No. Really?"
She turns back around, smiling sarcastically at him. "Ha-ha. But don't get too excited about it. I made little figurines to represent the four of us at Portland Row, but you can't even see them from the outside. It's ridiculous."
"It's okay. I'll know they're there."
At that moment, she felt a rush of gratitude towards Lockwood. He made everything a little easier, a little sweeter. They were standing so close that she could see a tiny snowflake on one of his eyelashes. She didn't dare breathe.
"There really never was any competition."
"I know."
"Then why does it sound like you don't believe me?"
She frowned. "I do believe you."
"I don't think you do."
"...do you want me to not believe you?"
"Y/N."
"What?"
"There's something you should know."
"Lockwood, I am going to throttle you."
"You're standing under mistletoe."
She glanced upwards, and it was as though all the air had been stolen from her lungs. Against the pitch-black sky and the gentle dusting of snow, a soft white sprig of mistletoe was curling out of the edge of a branch. She lowered her eyes back to Lockwood's, and her eyes fluttered shut as he leaned over.
As impossibly close as they were before, they were even closer now, and it still felt like they would spend their whole lives trying to get close enough to each other. She kissed him the way she loved him - desperately, with her whole being. When they broke apart, the tip of his nose and cheeks were tinged pink, and there was a light dusting of snow on his hair. In that moment, all she remembered thinking was that none of his presents made a better gift than he did.
As they walked home with fingers tangled together, she realised that they didn't need some parallel universe. In every universe, they would somehow, somewhere, find each other, and dare to love.

Amos and Daniel Glick were wonderful to deal with and replicated the exterior and interior window moldings and updated the windows with insulated glass. Their craftsmanship was so outstanding they were asked to do a number of additional projects at this site. Holiday Traditions: Why We Decorate With Christmas Lights
Showing lights during the Christmas season is pretty much as old as the actual occasion. Utilized in an assortment of ways and for quite some time reasons, the light was similarly as significant in the early long stretches of special festivals as it is today. From the moving image throughout the colder time of year solstice to an ornamental way of lighting up our Christmas trees or outshine neighbors with lavish enlightenment, light has consistently assumed a significant part in the glorious sensation of special times of the year. Before you begin hanging Christmas lights around trees, rooftops, and drains, get familiar with some cool realities concerning why we adorn with Christmas lights.
Agnostic Christmas Origins
The most punctual utilization of lights during Christmas time originates before the festival of Christmas. Winter solstice customs in northern European social orders, for example, Scandinavian and Germanic societies utilized fire during their midwinter celebrations. Getting ready for more limited days and longer evenings, agnostic ceremonies, for example, Yule logs, huge fires, and candles represented the resurrection of the sun, transforming night into day and the beginning of the New Year. Images of trust and festivity, it isn't difficult to perceive any reason why comparative employments of light were interlaced with strict festivals and Christmas celebrations.
Early Christian Symbolism
As Christianity spread all through Europe, agnostic practices were joined into set up Christian customs. Winter solstice festivities and year's end feasts weren't hard to take on into the Christmas season. As usual, flames and candles were fundamental for the colder time of year for hotness and light. Christianity just looked to rethink these lights by associating them with the images that were at that point a significant piece of Christmas, like the Star of Bethlehem. The utilization of light during winter didn't change for commonsense purposes, yet the importance behind it did.
Thomas Edison's Involvement
The innovation of power changed the manner in which individuals utilized lights at Christmas for eternity. It doesn't come as unexpected that Edison was engaged in some way with Christmas lights, however for this situation, his contribution wasn't as immediate. Indeed, a leader at Edison's organization, Edward H. Johnson, is credited just like the dad of the electric Christmas tree, hanging a tree and showing it in his home in New York City during the Christmas period of 1882. Johnson was immediately imitated, most quite by President Grover Cleveland at the White House on the Christmas of 1895.
Candles On Christmas Trees
Well before Johnson hung his tree with electric lights, Christmas trees were really lit with candles. Numerous innovators even invested energy in creating ways of masterminding candles on trees in a manner that wouldn't light a fire. Shockingly, Christmas tree fires were genuinely normal, and electrical lights in the good 'ol days were additionally known to light fires in homes. More secure bulbs were made accessible by the principal many years of the 20th century at more reasonable costs, giving home decorators inner serenity and growing the utilization of lights from the Christmas tree to the outside show.
Christmas Lights Today
Christmas lights are a major piece of the Christmas season. The early light strings enlightening the local roads somewhat less than 50 years prior don't approach the wild plans of light today. From sporting uses in power-depleting shows around neighborhoods to a cutting edge light show in the large city or the brightening of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, the utilization of light during the Christmas season has redirected in many ways from its unique aim. Notwithstanding, the basic utilization of Christmas window candles or classy Christmas tree plans has a significant effect when we're attempting to make a nostalgic look and give the endowment of light to other people.

1, 2, 14 and 19! :')
ahh thank u my dear!!! 🍃
1 - Song of the year?
according to spotify, it’s sweet but psycho but i honestly. do not remember playing that song enough to qualify. emotionally, it’s fluorescent lights by stars or portland, maine by donovan woods.
2 - Album of the year?
not sure what spotify says and i cannot choose!! i’m more of a ‘songs here & there’ person rather than feeling i have to sit down with an album. but my foggy days/winter sadness playlist for the year is here which is very much filling my ‘album of the winter’ spot.
14 - Favourite book you read this year?
it would have to be the empathy exams (jamison), with sapiens (harari), and my year of meats (ozeki) as close runners-up. all the books i read this year are here as well which i need to update with my christmas reading binge orz
the empathy exams is a book i keep coming back to and it’s like a comfort blanket at this point; jamison validates all of the emotions that i’m always too ashamed to name, like enjoyment of the saccharine, the awkward silences between doctor/med student and patient, the gulf between the lofty heights of ‘empathy’ vs the human, manageable ‘sympathy’. i adore her essays and can’t recommend this book enough - the author should cut me a cheque for the number of times i have gushed about this book honestly.
19 - What’re you excited about for next year?
ahh what a lovely q!! i’m excited to read more, to not be commuting to another city weekly for placement and so having more time at home, for my knee to heal so i can run again, and for my upcoming psychiatry + emergency medicine rotations!!
also yayoi kusama is installing an infinity room at the tate modern next yr so i could conceivably give myself a day trip out from my uni city to see it??? who’d have thought that i would ever voluntarily visit london LOL
also ofc excited for a semblance of normality to return but...i do not want to jinx anything!! but the vaccine news is very, very exciting to me and i cannot wait to see my family and friends and gf again.

Read on to see what it’s like to be a ReVision employee AND a customer!

9.2 kW Solar array (28 Panels)
It was the right time for solar because… I’ve worked in solar for twice as long as I’ve owned a home. When I bought my house it needed a lot of work, and the quickest way for me to reduce my oil consumption was to install a heat pump and heat pump water heater. I have a small electric bill, except in the cold months, so as much as I wanted to put solar on the roof, I needed to invest in some other stuff first. After redoing the roof, insulating my exterior walls, and putting up new siding, I finally pulled the trigger and put up 28 panels. I have a pretty average spot as far as sun exposure, but the bulk of my array faces the street, which is heavily trafficked on foot and by car. I’m glad all those people see it and start thinking about it, and if they catch me in the yard, I’ll even entertain a question or two.
The process was awesome and easy! Zach Nugent and Thomas Tutor helped run the numbers for me, and the rest was communicating to the purchasing and warehouse team when I was going to take my equipment. I know I would have had a willing army of installers to help me install the system, but I was worried it would be a little too square and level for my liking. I built the system over a couple weekends and got a helping hand up from Zach. He graciously let me know about all the dangling wires at the very end. Also really awesome that after last night’s typhoon, the whole thing is still there.
Most Surprising thing about working at ReVision: The biggest surprise is that an island customer can call at noon and request same-day service… and get it!

2:1 Mitsubishi Heat Pump System
It was the right time for heat pumps because… We bought our first home! A ~1900-built Colonial in Belfast, ME. It was a rental for about a decade before we bought it, so the only heat source was one gas monitor. We moved in mid-November and surrendered to the fact that being cold was now a part of life. Time to get some heat pumps.
Going through the process as a ReVision Customer, I felt like Kevin McCallister from Home Alone. Giddy and excited and a little out-of-place in a funny way. We love the outdoor outlet installed per code with the heat pumps – we will hang our Christmas lights with it. When they drilled a 3 inch hole in our wall, we actually got a glimpse of the insulation in the walls and it is surprisingly good for a house this old. Something we wouldn’t have ascertained otherwise.
We’re exceptionally happy at how well the equipment works in our house. Two single-zone units – one upstairs, one downstairs. We are comfortable in our home now – prior to the installation we were not. Can’t imagine life without it. The “fan” mode on the heat pump is the best thing ever.
Most surprising thing about ReVision: Seeing our crews in action – how efficient and fast they are is exceptional. It felt like having the “fun uncles” in our home. An honor to work with this team, and affirming to see how well they represent our company.

5.8 kW Solar Array (18 Panels) Install coming soon!
It was the right time for solar because… I just bought the home last July and wanted to be up and running ASAP! Every day at work, you think about solar, so for six years now I’ve been thinking about this on a daily basis. I guess you call that obsessive! Plus, the house came with a 2:1 air source heat pump and Vaughn tank, so solar was a no-brainer.

9.8 kW Solar Array (30 Panels)
3:1 Mitsubishi Heat Pump System
It was the right time for solar and heat pumps because… My wife and I have owned our house for nine years now. It was old, outdated and in need of a lot of love. Over the years I’ve become an electrician and a jack of all trades with my house. We decided after I became a Revision Energy co-owner that it was time to kick the oil out of our lives and go solar and get some heat pumps.
In July of 2020 I was excited to buy and install my own solar array and heat pump systems. So far we have loved them both reducing our electric bill and removing oil from our bills.
I had a great experience working with all the different teams from sales to purchasing, then branch management and warehouse getting everything lined up and delivered, AKA drive a truck home and unload it all. I couldn’t be more pleased with how everything turned out.
Bronwen, Kory, and Myley’s house built anew after the fire.
Bronwen Williamson
Operations – Liberty, ME
15 kW Solar Array (47 Panels)
It was the right time for solar because… I worked in the electrical field for some years before joining the Revision family in March of 2018. I have always been a bit of an environmentalist and was thrilled to become a bigger part of offsetting carbon emissions and working in a company that is 100% employee owned. But until moving in with my partner Kory in 2018 I did not have a place to put my own solar array.
Left: December 2019, after a fire destroyed their previous home. Right: Kory’s son Myley hugs a solar panel!
Then in May of 2019 we had an electrical house fire that took almost everything from us. It was a devastating and traumatizing experience but with the support of my revision family and our wonderful local community we have moved onward and upward and are able to see this experience as a blessing in disguise.
To keep from having much of a house payment moving forward we are and have been working vigorously and doing most of the work ourselves. It was actually therapeutic tearing down the rubble that once was your home and making way for a new one. We have spent the last year and a half demolishing, cleaning and rebuilding with a new and improved roof design more suited for solar. By June of this year we were finally solar ready, and with the pandemic full swing I found a few fellow furloughed installers to do the roof prep and help lay panels. So, this was the year to go solar because the opportunity just happened to drop right in my lap.
I am thankful for the help of Dennis Rumba in sales, Bret Irving in purchasing team and Pam Lavallee our bullheaded operations assistant that helped me with all of the permitting. I couldn’t have done it without them. Now our electric bill will only be $13.12 for years and years and years to come.
Chris Kelly

13.68 kW Solar Array (38 Panels)
2 1:1 Mitsubishi Heat Pump Systems
60 Gallon Heat Pump Water Heater
It was the right time for solar, heat pumps and a heat pump water heater because… Jill & I just closed on our first home on January 31st 2020 and while it certainly wasn’t the only deciding factor, the one we were lucky enough to buy has a phenomenal back roof facing close to due south with very little shade.
With the stars aligning in our favor, it really came down to two big reasons why we went forward this year. First, we wanted to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible, right away. Secondly, we knew that although it would be an additional outlay of money, that the sooner we invested in solar and associated technologies, the more we would save over the long-term. So we took the opportunity.
The process was super easy. The system was designed by Tom Hobbs, and Megan & Sue were super helpful in answering questions for us. The waiting was the hardest part by far!!
Most surprising thing about working at ReVision: The complexity of system design for all these quirky, and unique homes around NH. You never know what you’re going to find at the next site visit.

City Guide to Portland, Oregon | Must See Attractions, A Photo Essay
One of our favorite parts about Portland, Oregon is the unique things we get to see when walking throughout the city. From street art to foot paths and bridges, the city stays true to its reputation and slogan ‘keep Portland weird’. Come along with us and see some of our favorite off the beaten path must see attractions!
Disclosure: We may receive a commission for links on our blog. You don’t have to use our links, but we’re very appreciative when you do. Thanks again for your support, we hope you find our posts and information helpful! Learn more.
We saved our favorite photos from our travel in the United States in our Photo Album! Don’t worry, we think it’s more fun than sitting through your grandparents vacation slideshows…
We’re a digital nomad couple pursuing financial independence, retire early (FI/RE) and in 2016, we sold most of our belongings, planned to be ‘homeless’ and traveled 3 continents, 23 countries, and 60 cities in a year!
After a year traveling full time internationally we decided it was time to come home to the United States. However, our life as digital nomads wasn’t something we wanted to give up. So, in 2017 we continued our house sitting adventures throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
"We love exploring neighborhoods, off the beaten path sights, and must see attractions in each city we visit."
We hope our city guides might inspire your wanderlust. And, since a picture is worth a thousand words, we’re sharing our favorite sightseeing images from the cities we’ve visited in photo essays!

What to See in Portland, Oregon
Most of our city guides are extremely thorough since we sightsee as if we’ll never return to a place. Not because we don’t want to come back, but because there are more places in the world that we want to see than we’ll have the time to.
With that said, there are some places we’ve been to many times. Portland, Oregon is one of those places. We lived in the area for a couple of years and we have family here. So when we visit, our days of sightseeing and exploring are much more off the beaten path than that of the typical tourist.
We hope you enjoy the sights we’ve found while walking this fun and unique city!
Don’t miss our Ultimate Gear and Packing Lists! Whether you’re traveling long-term or going on a short vacation, we'll show you how to travel with a single carry-on. We share our packing lists (his and hers!), packing tips, and our favorite gear. Plus, we discuss what we don’t carry and why!
Steel Bridge, Portland Oregon
The Steel Bridge in Portland is one of the many bridges that cross the Willamette River. You can drive across it, take the MAX light rail over it, or like us, enjoy a nice walk via the bridge into downtown Portland.
White Stag Portland Sign
The White Stag Sign is synonymous with Portland, so much so that it’s also known simply as the Portland Sign.
If you’re looking for a close up view of this must see sign, head towards the Burnside Bridge. The sign sits on top of the White Stag Building (70 NW Couch Street) in downtown Portland.
As a bonus, if you’re visiting in the winter, the nose of the reindeer will light up red for Christmas!
Portland’s Old Town Chinatown
When in Portland, we highly recommend visiting Old Town Chinatown!
Chinatown Gateway
Be sure to see the beautiful Chinatown Gateway that was built in Taiwan and installed in Portland’s Old Town Chinatown in 1986.
You can find it at 22 NW 4th Ave, Portland OR 97209.
Hung Far Low Sign
While the restaurant is permanently closed, the large Hung Far Low sign has become a favorite of Portlanders. The community came together to take it out of storage and have it restored and hung for all to see at the intersection of Northwest Fourth Avenue and Couch Street in Old Town Chinatown.
Lan Su Chinese Garden
While in Old Town Chinatown, be sure to make a visit to the Lan Su Chinese Garden where you can see over 400 species of plants, of which 90% are indigenous to China.
But it’s more than just a beautiful garden, and aims to be an experience that brings together Chinese tradition through art, architecture, design and nature.
Lan Su Chinese Garden can be found at 239 Northwest Everett Street, Portland, Oregon 97209.
Tilikum Crossing AKA Bridge of the People
Tilikum Crossing bridge serves the MAX Orange line, the Portland Streetcar, pedestrians, cyclists, and buses crossing the Willamette river.
It’s beautifully designed, has amazing views of the river and mountains on a clear day, and at night is wonderfully lit. In fact, the lighting is designed to change based on the speed, depth, and temperature of the Willamette river!
London, San Francisco, Paris, New York City, Athens and more?! Trusted Housesitters has allowed us to travel the world on a budget, but more importantly given us an opportunity to make new friends and have cute and cuddly companions along the way. Sign up and start your next great adventure!
Portland’s Street Art
There are a few cities around the world that we’ve been to that have beautiful street art that stands out. Athens, Greece was a city with a street art culture that caught our attention. Portland, Oregon is another city that’s full of impressive and inspiring street art by very talented artists!
Sunnyside Piazza
We didn’t go looking for this brightly painted intersection, in fact, we didn’t even know of it’s existence. However, on a walk exploring the local neighborhood of one of our house sits, we were lucky enough to stumble on the ginormous flower painted by the Sunnyside neighborhood!
If you have the chance, make your way to the intersection of SE 33rd & Yamhill in Portland to see the mural that the community comes together to repaint yearly. And not only is the street worth your attention, but the homes and signs around the intersections are expressive pieces of art as well!
If you’re wondering how to travel internationally, or simply vacation nearby and not spend a fortune on airfare or hotels, then we’d like to welcome you to the world of ‘travel hacking’. See what credit cards we carry, and how we take full advantage of the points and miles we’ve earned.
Forest for the Trees Project
Forest for the Trees is a project that aims to pull people out of their everyday life and help them see Portland as a canvas. The project has been bringing international artists together to paint publicly accessible art since 2013.

Spring in Portland
Early spring in Portland, Oregon typically brings substantial rain to the area. And while some might see this as a downside, the benefit is clearly visible in the lush landscape. From the beautiful flowering trees to the tulips and dandelions.
For those that look towards the earth, you’ll probably spot a few snails after a rain storm. However, not a single snail we’ve come across in Portland even comes close to the behemoth we found on a walk in Oslo, Norway!
Spring in the Pacific Northwest usually means the geese are breeding and goslings are on their way. Just be aware, parent geese are very protective of their young family!
More Fun Portland Sights!
We’re always looking around to see what new things we’ll find when we’re in Portland!
City of Roses

Tung & Xi'an Bao Bao, Shang Dynasty replica, 2002
Standing in the North Park Blocks (at the intersection of Northwest Park Avenue and West Burnside Street), the Da Tung & Xi'an Bao Bao sculpture is a symbol of safe and prosperous offspring. If you're curious about the carved design, it's a call back to ancient Chinese mythology.
Facing the Crowd by Michael Stutz, 2001

River City Bicycles roof top bicyclist sculptures.
Located at 706 SE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Portland, OR 97214.
Final Thoughts
There’s something for just about every visitor and tourist to Portland.
We always enjoy our time in the city and appreciate house sitting in different neighborhoods. It allows us to uncover so many great sights we never would have seen otherwise!

The Things We Learn: Epilogue
It all starts on Christmas. Emma Swan meets Killian Jones and one fake date later they embark on a year of discovering what makes the other the perfect person for them. A Captain Swan holidays AU. Now complete.
Part 1, Part 2, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas Again, New Year’s Eve
ff.net & AO3
Killian sighed and dragged a weary hand over his face.  When he had left his very comfortable bed, not to mention his very alluring wife, behind that morning he’d had every intention of only spending an hour in the office at most.  Looking at the clock he was dismayed to see that it was going on four hours, with no immediate end in sight.  He silently vowed to himself to never again leave for a week without putting someone competent in charge.
Immediately Killian felt ashamed at his thoughts.  It hadn’t been Will’s fault that everything had practically gone to hell the one week he had returned to Boston to check in with the business there.  Killian couldn’t even bring himself to remotely regret the expansion up into Maine but he sometimes wished he could allow himself just a moment to relinquish his need for control and relax for one bloody day.  Even if he knew it would be more for Emma’s benefit than his own.
Emma had supported him wholeheartedly from the moment he had voiced the idea of expanding his business.  The tours he had been doing in Boston Harbor had taken off after the Mayor’s Halloween party five years before and as a result his company had reached heights of success he hadn’t dreamed of.  He had offhandedly mentioned the thought opening a second location to Emma late one night only a few months after they had married.  She had taken him completely by surprise when she had told him that she thought it was an excellent idea and then even more so when she had leapt up from their bed to grab a notebook to begin writing down places she thought people would want boating tours.  Killian had been too stunned to contribute that night but he remembered thinking that if he hadn’t already married her he would have done it the second the courthouse had opened the next morning.
It had taken another two years, multiple loan applications, and more frustrations than he thought he could handle before he was finally able announce the opening of the Maine location.  He and Emma had chosen a small seaside town called Storybrooke due to the large number of tourists that flocked there in the summer and that it was just far enough away from Portland and Old Orchard Beach to encourage said tourists to charter day trips down the coast for a visit.  Storybrooke was not only an ideal location for his business but also for them personally.  Their dreams of owning a home had been realized not long after the decision to open in Storybrooke had been made and Emma had been happily employed as a deputy in the sheriff’s office since they’d made their move up the eastern seaboard.  Whenever Killian had a moment to stop and breathe he found himself amazed at the life he often times felt he had merely had the good fortune of stumbling into.  Shaking himself out of his reverie he turned back to the papers piled up on his desk.
They were in the height of their first official summer season.  Things had been going well enough that Killian had believed that he could spend a week in Boston without disrupting how smoothly things had been running in Maine.  It was only when he had returned that he realized he’d been a touch overconfident and hadn’t quite prepared Will as thoroughly as he should have.
Will and Belle had moved to Maine at the insistence of Emma and the promise of jobs from Killian.  They had both been struggling to find steady work and a place to live in Boston and out of all their friends they were the only ones willing and able to move to Storybrooke with them.  While Will had no sailing experience or knowledge about boats and ships at all Killian knew he had an uncanny ability to talk his way into a good deal which gave him a wily head for business.  By hiring him it had allowed Killian some of his freedom to return to captaining the sailing excursions himself, something he had reluctantly given up once the business had taken off years before.  Belle on the other hand was highly proficient on the computer and from the minute she’d been on the payroll she had overhauled his entire system: making bookings more efficient, cutting costs due to redundancies when ordering supplies, and updated the payroll software to one that wasn’t over a decade old.  She had joined him in Boston to update the computers there which had led to the backup of paperwork due to Will having no clue how to enter anything into any of the software his wife had installed.
When Killian had dropped Belle off at her house late the afternoon before he had almost immediately received a litany of texts from Will.  There was a lot of waffling, too many ‘mates’, and three promises of pints at the local bar, The Rabbit Hole, before Will finally got to the point that there was a bit of extra work awaiting him at the office.  Killian hadn’t been too concerned at the time, more anxious to get back to Emma and the luxury of sleeping in his own bed instead of the somewhat lumpy guest mattress at David and Mary Margaret’s than anything.  He had merely thought that Will had been over exaggerating what awaited him.  Glancing down at the multitude of numbers and post-its still strewn across his desk after the hours he had already spent sorting through them he felt Will hadn’t warned him enough.  Just as he was about to pick up the sheaf of receipts from the most recent supply run a light knock sounded at his door.
“I told you, Gwen, unless it’s an emergency that the police or coast guard can’t handle I’m not here!” He called out without bothering to lift his head.
“What makes you think you can handle anything that those trained professionals can’t?”
“Swan!”
Killian looked up with a wide grin to see Emma sliding into his office and closing the door behind her.  She was dressed casually, her hair in a low ponytail, a gentle smile on her face and a coffee cup in her hand.
“You weren’t answering any of my texts so I thought I’d come investigate,” Emma said with mild accusation.
“Apologies, deputy, but I had placed my phone on silent to avoid being distracted by my beautiful and endlessly patient wife.  It won’t happen again,” he said contritely, adopting a doe eyed look begging for forgiveness.
“I sent a message to Belle-” she informed him with a good natured shake of her head as she placed the steaming mug in front of him.  She gave him a peck on the lips before sitting herself down on the corner of his desk, “She said she’ll be here soon to fix Will’s mess.”
“There was no need to do that, love.  I almost have things back under control,” he sighed.  Turning the mug so he could grab the handle with his left hand he took a small sip as he grabbed the receipts he had been reaching for before Emma made her appearance with his right, “Next time I go to Boston for a week I’m just going to shut down operations here.  No need to try and do any business when I’m stuck sorting through the aftermath of Hurricane Scarlet.”
He smiled up at her but faltered when he noticed that her own smile was somewhat off.
“I truly am sorry, love.  I honestly didn’t think things would take this long to untangle-”
“It’s fine, Killian-” Emma’s smile became a bit more sincere but her eyes still looked troubled, “How are Elise and Jamie?”
“Most likely faring the same as when you asked me last night, Swan,” Killian said only somewhat jokingly. “As are the whole Nolan clan and the Fas.  Is everything alright?”
“Yeah, yeah-” she waved his concern away and gave him another smile but it was too wide, too fake, “I’m a little tired is all.  Someone kept me up late last night and then left way too early this morning.  Do you want more coffee?”
Killian frowned.  Emma was fidgeting slightly, her heel tapping lightly on the side of his desk as she twirled her wedding rings around her finger.  He looked down at the cup of coffee and was relieved to see that he had truly only had the one sip instead of drinking the whole thing without noticing.
“Perhaps you’d better have if you’re truly feeling tired.”
“What?  No!” Emma winced, “No, I really don’t need it but if you don’t want it-”
She looked almost hurt as she said it and Killian immediately pulled the mug closer, “I never said I didn’t want it.  Are you sure you’re alright Emma?”
He watched her closely as she seemed to come to a decision.  She squared her shoulders and gave him a much warmer smile than before.
“I’m fine and when Belle gets here and kicks you out of the office I’ll be even better.  Do you want me to wait here or should I go admire my dinghy?”
“She’s a ship, love,” Killian groaned.  He was still concerned about her strange behavior but knew pushing her about it would make her less likely to immediately tell him what was wrong, “I’d prefer you to stay here.  Though perhaps not sitting on half the papers I need.”
“Oops, sorry,” she said as she slipped off the desk, not looking the least bit apologetic.
Killian shook his head and set the receipts he was still clutching in his hand down in front of him.  He transferred the coffee cup to his right hand and was about to take a sip when he realized that the mug was one he’d never seen before.  The ones they kept at the office were plain white ones and the one he favored at home was black with a gold anchor.  The mug in his hand was a deep navy color with some lettering done in gold rope.  Pulling the mug away from his lips he noticed Emma stiffen slightly in his periphery but he focused instead on reading the script along the side.
My daddy shore is reely great!
Every muscle seemed to go on lockdown as his eyes skimmed over the words again and again.  All Killian could think about was how Emma had purposefully used that mug for his coffee which meant that she had gone out specifically looking for a mug like that.  Which meant that she had known that she was-
He couldn’t finish that thought.  It wasn’t as though it should have come as a surprise, though.  They had been trying for nearly a year, ever since the birth of the Nolan’s daughter and the feeling that they both had of wanting a child of their own.  Killian’s hand began to shake as he read the mug one final time and finally allowed himself to believe that his wonderful, beautiful, amazing wife was-
“Pregnant.”
“Killian?”
Looking up at Emma he realized he had whispered his thought out loud.  She was watching him carefully, the diamond solitare of her engagement ring being spun so quickly around her finger it was almost a blur.  Then he looked into her eyes and saw her joy, tempered a bit by worry, but still somehow complete and practically bursting out of her.  He finally understood why people said that pregnant women seemed to glow, his Swan was radiant.
“Emma, is this… are you truly…”
“Pregnant?” Her eyes crinkled as a true smile bloomed. “Yeah, it was confirmed by the doctor on Friday.”
“Confirmed,” Killian whispered in awe.  He placed the mug carefully down on his desk before placing his hand gently over her lower stomach, eyes flitting between her face and where his hand was resting, “How far along are you?”
“About six weeks.  I took a few tests before you left for Boston but I didn’t want to say anything until I knew for sure and then I really wanted to wait until today,” Emma’s eyes glittered with happiness as her hand came to rest over his own.
“Today?” He asked puzzled.
“I was going to put a bib on Roger but I thought you wouldn’t put it together as quickly,” she shrugged and then laughed. “I also forgot you still don’t have a handle on holidays unless they’ve been put on your phone’s calendar.  Here, let me.”
Before he could question her further she snatched his phone off his desk and began swiping the pad of her finger over the screen.  Figuring she’d show him once she was done he went back to focusing on the slight rounding of her stomach that could have well been merely in his imagination.  He let his hand slide to her hip as his ran his thumb in gentle circles over her stomach.
“There, now you’ll always have a reminder,” she said proudly handing him his phone.
Killian took it from her and reluctantly looked at the calendar app she had left open.  There in bold letters in the little box for that day’s date were the words ‘Father’s Day’.  His breath hitched and he hastily put down his phone before standing and gently cupping Emma’s face in his hands.
“Father, I’m going to be a father,” he said in wonder with what he knew was a dopey smile on his face. “And you a mum.  We’re going to be parents!”
“Yeah, we really are.”
They were both still smiling widely when he brought his lips to hers.  He still needed tend to the piles of papers on his desk, there was a list forming in his mind of new renovations that to be done on their home, and there was an overwhelming sense that he truly had no idea what being a father entailed but there was one thing Killian knew for sure: he would always thank his lucky stars for that Christmas Day six and a half years before when Emma decided she needed his help and he was only too happy to oblige.

Portland Head by David Wagner Via Flickr: Portland Head has long protected Portland and the adjacent area. Cape Elizabeth residents were deeply committed to American independence from British rule. In 1776, the new Town of Cape Elizabeth posted a guard of eight soldiers at Portland Head to warn citizens of coming British attacks. In 1787, the General Court of Massachusetts (the Massachusetts legislature) provided $750 to begin construction of a lighthouse. In 1790, when the United States Government took over the responsibility of all lighthouses, Congress appropriated $1,500 for its completion. The original tower measured 72' from base to lantern deck and was lit with 16 whale oil lamps. It was first lit on January 10, 1791. Construction of the first Keeper's Quarters began in 1790 as the result of a contract signed by Massachusetts Governor John Hancock. A one story dwelling built to replace the first keeper's house was erected in 1816. It measured 34' x 20' with two rooms, a cellar and a porch in the rear. By 1864 a 4th order Fresnel lens and a cast iron staircase were installed. By 1865, the tower was raised 20' and a 2nd order Fresnel lens was installed. A portion of this lens may now be seen at the Museum at Portland Head Light. Except for a period between1883 and1885, this lens was in the lighthouse until 1958. Late on Christmas Eve in 1886, the three masted bark Annie C. Maguire struck the ledge at Portland Head. Keeper Joshua Strout, his son, wife, and volunteers rigged an ordinary ladder as a gangplank between the shore and the ledge the ship was heeled against. Captain O'Neil, the ship's master, his wife, two mates, and the nine man crew clambered onto the ledge and then to safety . The cause of the wreck is puzzling since visibility was not a problem. Members of the crew reported they "plainly saw Portland Light before the disaster and are unable to account for same." The current Keepers' Quarters building was constructed in 1891 as a two story duplex. Until 1989, it was home to the head and assistant lighthouse keepers and their families. Portland Head Light was the responsibility of the United States Department of the Treasury from 1790 to 1852 when management was transferred to the US Lighthouse Board. The Board was reorganized into the Bureau of Lighthouses in 1910. In 1939, aids to navigation became the responsibility of the United States Coast Guard. On August 7th, 1989, Petty Officer Davis Simpson struck the US flag for the last time at the decommissioning ceremony recognizing the automation of the lighthouse. The property was leased in 1990 to the Town of Cape Elizabeth. Three years later, through the efforts of United States Senator George Mitchell, the property was deeded to the Town. The United States Coast Guard maintains the actual light and the fog signal, but the remainder of the property is managed by the Town of Cape Elizabeth.

PHOTO: COURTESY @KEASHALDN  Over the last year we’ve seen an enormous amount of hair trends emerge and all because we have an unquenchable thirst for the “next big thing.” Oil slick hair , holographic hair, and every bangs hairstyle you can imagine , we’ve covered it. Now, I ask you to turn your attention to hair tinsel. Hair tinsel is not just for festivals. Hair tinsel is both a hairstyle and a beauty hack. And, it’s this two-in-one trait that’ll cause the convenience-loving millennial to go bonkers for it. Hair tinsel is a blinged out way to test-drive highlights. Getting highlights is a journey, and it goes a little something like this. First, you start to feel like something is missing in your life. Weird stuff starts happening like: waking up in cold sweat, thinking you left the iron on. Or, you wonder if it’s time for a job change. In fact, what you’re feeling is neither of those things. What your experiencing is your body’s natural urge to get highlights. The time has come. What follows is a Hair Highlights Pinterest Board and countless hours spent in the mirror imagining how you’ll look with them. Next, you bravely saunter into your hair salon, cellphone full of hair inspo pictures that only make your stylist more confused about what you want, and then it happens. According to science, about 60% of the time you only feel lukewarm about the finished product. But by that point, your hair has already taken the damage so your work is to “get comfortable” with your new do. Hair tinsel will eliminate that 60% chance. Hair Tinsel Comes in a Variety of Colors You can buy hair tinsel in gigantic packs of metallic or matte finishes and in a plethora of colors. Since options are limitless, you can achieve a wide range of looks from highlights to a fairy hair tinsel look. Where to Buy Hair Tinsel Hair tinsel is dirt cheap at about $10-$15 per pack and you can buy them on amazon . Your Stylist Can Install Your Hair Tinsel Not gonna lie, if you’re big on DIY hairdos, installing hair tinsel the first time will be the best upperbody workout you’ve ever had. Once you have the hang of it though, you’ll be a pro and can swap your “temporary bling highlights” whenever you want. Or, you can have your stylist install hair tinsel extensions for you. Properly installed hair tinsel lasts for about two months before they loosen and fall out. How to Put in Hair Tinsel Youtuber Sophie Hannah put together a feature hair tinsel DIY video if you’re up to the challenge. Hair Tinsel is Heat Resistant Quality hair tinsel is heat-resistant up to 392˚F and chemical free, so you can install and style your hair as usual with any blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron etc. And, they’ll stay put with your normal shampoo routine. Now that we’ve gotten the formalities out of the way I’d like to submit into evidence proof that you’d have a lot of fun playing with hair tinsel. View this post on Instagram A post shared by KEASH (@keashldn) on Nov 18, 2018 at 5:34am PST Perhaps the leader in hair tinsel styles right now, London's Keash Braids is the go-to destination for cool Brit girls. For Keash, hair is more than just hair. It's a canvas fit for glitter and bedazzlement. Every client leaves Keash's salon with a style wholly unique to them, and one that typically includes tinsel. Bob haircuts are sexy but there's just no replacement for length. And even the cutest cuts can leave you yearning for past inches. So, what's a woman to do while she's letting her bob grow out and it's in the drab in-between stage? The answer is: go all-in on tinsel. Have fun with multiple colors. If you have brown hair, install technicolor hair tinsel and discover how light reflection creates totally different shades with every angle. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beautystack (@beautystack) on Jun 26, 2019 at 3:32am PDT Fun hair color options may seem limited for brunettes, but tinsel is here to change that. Sure, you can lift your hair color to the heavens and then go back in a couple weeks later for a dye job. But that's a heck of a long process and a lot of damage if you ask me. Fortunately, hair tinsel gives you another option besides sitting on the sidelines while everyone else has fun with hair color. And, if your locks happen to be waist length, hair tinsel also comes in a variety of lengths. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LAHH Salon (@lahhsalon) on Dec 13, 2018 at 2:42pm PST Grey was a popular hair color trend a few years ago. You know what happened to those grey hair lovers? They've been having a lot of fun with silver. Silver hair tinsel extensions contrast perfectly with brown hair.
