US airline bailout helps Southwest post $116 million profit
DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines is the first major U.S. airline to report a profit since the pandemic started, as federal payroll aid helped boost the company to net income of $116 million in the first quarter.
Without the federal money, Southwest would have lost $1 billion in the quarter.
Southwest also echoed rivals in saying that demand for travel is continuing to improve. The airline said Thursday that bookings for leisure trips within the United States have been improving each week since mid-February.
IN HOUSTON: Southwest Airlines takes flight from Bush IAH, again
“While the pandemic is not over, we believe the worst is behind us, in terms of the severity of the negative impact on travel demand,” Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly said in a statement.
Southwest is benefitting more from the pickup in leisure travel because its biggest rivals — American, Delta and United — depend more on business travel and long-haul international flying, both of which remain deeply depressed.
Kelly also expressed gratitude for federal payroll aid — the airline industry has received $64 billion in cash and low-interest loans over the past 13 months to help cover labor costs.
Without Southwest’s share of that aid and other temporary items, Southwest would have lost $1.72 per share. That result was still slightly better than Wall Street feared. The average estimate of 13 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $1.82 per share.
Southwest posted revenue of $2.05 billion, slightly above the analysts’ prediction of $2.03 billion.
Shares of Dallas-based Southwest rose 2% in trading before Thursday’s opening bell. At Wednesday’s closing price, the shares had more than doubled in the past 12 months and gained 33% since the beginning of 2021, beating the 11% increase in the S&P 500 index.

Analysis Finds Houston 2021 Job Growth Could Be Stymied If COVID-19 Isn’t Under Control – Houston Public Media
The Houston skyline as seen from the Waco Street bridge in east Houston, Feb. 4, 2020.
In its newly released 2021 employment forecast, the Greater Houston Partnership predicted the region will add 35,000 to 52,000 jobs in 2021.
Usually, the GHP gives a specific estimation for its annual employment forecast, not a range.
But the pandemic is making things more unpredictable this year, and whether job creation will be at the lower or higher end of the spectrum depends largely on how people behave, according to GHP senior economist Patrick Jankowski.
“We will not see significant growth in Houston or in Texas or in the U.S. until we get the virus under control,” he said during an online presentation Tuesday. “And part of this is social distancing and masks and the rollout of the vaccine.”
Other factors include oil prices, a national stimulus package, expansion of health care coverage and large local infrastructure projects.
Most of the growth will probably not come until the second half of the year, Jankowski said.
“By midyear, all the health care workers will be vaccinated and the inoculations will be well underway for the general population,” he said. “And you’ll start to see infection rates go down and you’ll start to see case rates go down.”
In addition, the impact of the stimulus package should be felt by that time, Jankowski said, and pent-up demand will boost economic development and travel worldwide.
The economist predicted growth in all but two sectors: energy and retail, forecasted to lose up to 2,000 and 3,000 jobs respectively.
Greater Houston shed more than 350,000 jobs in March and April this year. So far, it has recouped about half of those.

Analysts Say 2020 Was The ‘Pivot Point’ For Non-Carbon Energy Transition – Houston Public Media
A vehicle makes its way down a rural road as wind turbines are shown at rear, Wednesday, July 29, 2020, near Sweetwater, Texas.
This year is shaping up to be the pivotal mark in the transition to cleaner energy, according to an analysis out this week from IHS Markit.
As the COVID-19 pandemic devastated global demand for oil and gas, investment in renewables has held steady or increased. For the first time ever, IHS Markit predicts worldwide demand for non-carbon energy sources like wind, solar and nuclear power, is set to exceed 10%.
However, energy experts caution that the transition to clean energy is expected to be incremental, and will take decades.
“We are still years away from peak oil demand and the world will continue to consume large amounts of crude for decades to come,” read a statement from Jim Burkhard, vice president and head of oil markets at IHS Markit. “But 2020 could be remembered as the pivot point where the next 30 years look much different in terms of the non-carbon energy’s share of demand and the overall pace of change. Certain years stand out in the history of energy. This year will be one of them.”
Some had feared that the financial impact of the pandemic would slow or halt the shift to a clean energy future. Instead, it appears to be speeding it up.
Deloitte, another major firm, said this week in its most recent Oil and Gas outlook that companies appear to be even more committed to long term trends — like moving to a low carbon future as well as transforming the digital tools used in the industry.
“The oil and gas industry has a history of surprising us,” the Deloitte Outlook states, noting that this year, “the industry accelerated its energy transition, with many oil and gas companies announcing their net-zero goals at the peak of the pandemic.”
Some supermajors like BP and Shell even pledged to reduce oil and gas production and investment significantly in the next decade.
Also this week, Houston-based Maverick Natural Resources announced it was acquiring FourPoint Energy in an all-equity merger. The move boosts Maverick’s position in the Anadarko Basin of Texas and Oklahoma.
And this week we learned that nationwide employment in oilfield services and equipment ticked up slightly for the third month in a row. The sector added an estimated 2,665 jobs in November, according to federal data analyzed by the Petroleum Equipment & Services Association. Overall oilfield services lost more than 100,000 jobs due to the pandemic, the majority of which were here in Texas.

Texas Medical Center Exceeds ICU Capacity As Leaders Discuss Future Pandemic Preparedness – Houston Public Media
Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, on Aug. 28, 2020.
Hospitals in the Texas Medical Center reached 100% ICU capacity Wednesday, pushing them back into surge plans.
Hospitals are switching to Phase 2 operations for the first time since the summer. That means they’re converting regular beds into ICU beds to accommodate the surge.
That benchmark came even as TMC leaders participated in a virtual version of the Greater Houston Partnership’s annual State of the Texas Medical Center event.
The TMC is made up of 61 health care institutions, many of which are rivals. But the pandemic taught them to work together, according to Marc Boom, president and CEO of Houston Methodist Hospital.
“One of the things we recognized early on was a need to standardize data reporting and the value of understanding on the frontlines what’s going on with this pandemic,” Boom said. “Working with each of our teams to say, OK, if we’re going to define something as X, let’s make sure everybody defines something as X and then we’ll report it and we’ll report it in real time.”
Eric Boerwinkle, the dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center, said that should be applied to fight other diseases as well.
And he said that collaboration should lead to the establishment of what he called a “public health national guard.”
He said the world was “caught flatfooted” by the coronavirus, “and we can never let that happen again.”
“We’ll have the training of public health professionals and the building of a public health infrastructure that will be in the background, frankly, but that will also be ready when the next pandemic comes,” Boerwinkle said. “And the next pandemic will come.”

Houston Port Study Shows Women- And Minority-Owned Businesses Underrepresented Among Contractors – Houston Public Media
Shipping containers at the Port of Houston.
The Port of Houston is taking steps to increase the number of small businesses and those owned by women and minorities the port contracts with.
It comes after the completion of an independent disparity study that shows women- and minority-owned businesses are grossly underrepresented in the port’s procurement process.
For example, the study by Griffin & Strong PC found less than 0.1% of construction contract dollars go to Black-owned firms, even though they represent about 15% of the market.
“It shows that we have a lot of work to do going forward to provide what we have been talking about for a long time, which is social, racial and economic equity for the community,” Port Commission Chairman Ric Campo said.
He said the study will help the commission as it works to enhance the port’s small business enterprise program.
The port commission this week authorized staff to work on next steps.
Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis praised the port for commissioning the study, saying the port’s is similar to the county’s contracting disparity.
“(What) these results tell us is that economic inequality has gone unaddressed for far too long and that every major entity in this region has an obligation to confront this issue,” read a statement from Ellis. “We must work together to design strong programs that level the playing field for minority and women-owned businesses, and correct our historical negligence.”

Understanding The New COVID Relief Package And Digging Deeper Into The SolarWinds Cybersecurity Attack – Houston Public Media
FILE – In this April 23, 2020, file photo, President Donald Trump’s name is seen on a stimulus check issued by the IRS to help combat the adverse economic effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, in San Antonio. A number of taxpayers who use tax preparation services, such as H&R Block and TurboTax, say their second relief payments were sent to the incorrect bank account. The IRS and the Treasury Department began issuing the Economic Impact Payments last week of Jan. 1, 2021.

Houston Public Media reporter Matt Harab also joins Ernie with headlines from Houston and beyond, including:
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo says she expects certain indoor businesses will have to go back to 50% occupancy in the county “unless things change in the next couple of hours.” UPDATE: Harris County Passes Threshold for Tougher COVID-19 Restrictions This would be a State order, not Judge Hidalgo’s order. Harris County is part of a “Trauma Service Area” (as defined by Governor Greg Abbott) that includes Fort Bend, Montgomery and other counties farther away from the city of Houston. These counties collectively have had six consecutive days during which COVID-19 hospitalizations have accounted for above 15% of the total hospital capacity. Fort Bend County has begun rolling out the Pfizer vaccine to healthcare workers, and others most at risk for developing COVID–19 (65 years and older and people 16 years or older with a chronic medical condition). For now, if you’re a Fort Bend County resident, you can’t register online, because they’ve reached the 5000 person limit. Everyone who’s currently registered in Fort Bend County will be contacted, and they will be informed when and where they need to go to get vaccinated.
How To Get A COVID Vaccine In The Houston Area

COVID-19 Brought More Profit, New Challenges To Texas’ Funeral Industry – Houston Public Media
Leal Funeral Home in South Houston tripled its business in 2020, according to its funeral director.
On a recent Monday morning, in the sanctuary of the Leal Funeral Home in South Houston, a closed white and gold casket was awaiting the next family to come in. That’s when funeral director Manuel Guerra says they’ll have the opportunity to see their loved ones first, before anyone else comes in.
These days, ceremonies are limited to about 60 family members and friends in a room that fits 190.
Guerra has been in the funeral business for 40 years. But 2020, he said, was a year like no other.
“November to February, historically, was the busiest time of the year,” Guerra said. “Well, when this coronavirus started, oh my gosh. Some funeral homes businesses went up almost 100% to 200%. We had one case in one week, we had almost 39 funerals in one week. That’s what some funeral homes do in one month.”
For the funeral industry, the coronavirus pandemic has been a huge challenge. Not only have many been overwhelmed by COVID-19’s mounting death toll, they’ve also had to change how they operate.
And for some working in the industry, 2020 was a roller coaster.
Leal tripled its business last year, he said, keeping all four of its locations in Houston very occupied. June and July were the busiest months.
“We were here at one time before 7 o’clock in the morning getting someone dressed for a visitation,” he said. “And 9:45 at night we’re still dressing bodies.”
As someone working in the funeral industry, he’s used to seeing death.
But this has been different.
“We had a wife – young – that died in the beginning of one month. And four weeks later her husband died,” Guerra said. “It’s just sad, it’s tragic.” Guerra said he himself lost four family members to COVID-19.
Manuel Guerra, funeral director at Leal Funeral Home in South Houston, experienced both a lay-off and being overwhelmed with work in 2020.
The situation has been the same for funeral homes throughout the state.
Harvey Hilderbran, executive director of the Texas Funeral Directors Association, said it’s not just that funeral homes have been doing more funerals. They’ve also had to do more just to help out over-burdened hospitals and medical examiners — things like picking up and temporarily storing bodies.
That’s on top of the risk of getting infected from someone who died from the coronavirus.
“All those things that we normally handle, those have all been challenged and exacerbated,” Hilderbran said. “But then (there are) also other things, where we’re more into service, and a part of the first responders, and a part of the emergency responders, and we worked for FEMA in the Valley.”
At the same time, the restrictions to slow the spread of the pandemic have limited the types and sizes of services funeral homes usually offer.
In fact, in the early days of the pandemic, Guerra of Leal Funeral Home was laid off from his position at another funeral home.
He didn’t have to wait long for a new job, as infections and deaths surged in the summer. But for a time, the virus forced the industry to change the way it did business.
“When the (coronavirus) first came out, a lot of families and a lot of funeral homes were doing only cremations,” he said. “And maybe just have a memorial service with just a few people present but not the body present.”
Looking back to the start of the pandemic, some in the funeral industry were worried about declining revenue last year.
Tom Ryan, the CEO of Houston-based funeral home giant Service Corp. International said as much in a Forbes article back in April.
But a look at SCI’s latest earnings report shows the company increased its revenue by more than $160 million through September compared to the same period in 2019.
“It’s a bit awkward and very humbling for us to speak to you today about our financial results for the quarter at a moment in time that has been so sad, so challenging and filled with so much uncertainty for so many people,” Ryan said during a conference call with investors in October.
At the Leal Funeral Home, Guerra said business usually goes up year over year. But it’s hard to deal with double or triple the number of funerals.
While in things calmed down a bit in the latter part of the year, he was hopeful that things would go fully back to normal in 2021.
“And I pray,” he said, “that the cure is around the corner.”
