I can't believe I wrote this THREE YEARS ago.
Baby It’s Cold Outside: Masterlist
Last Update: Part 3 (September 24, 2021) *Main story complete*
Summary:
You’ve met Francisco Morales before - during the times when he and his group of military buddies would spend weekends in a rented cabin in your small Florida panhandle town. However, it’s never been anything more than saying hello and having an occasional drink with the group … you don’t even know if you’d call yourself friends.
What happens when a less than ideal weather forecast the week of Christmas provides you with an opportunity to give Frankie a hand … and maybe even get a little closer to him? Are you ready to admit to him that it’s what you want - and how does he feel?
- No use of “Y/N”
- Female reader
- * denotes chapters with explicit NSFW content (Individual chapters have detailed warnings)
- Initially written for my 2021 Christmas in July event, I fell in love with these two while writing it, and am nowhere near done with them.
Rating (as of part 3): NSFW - Mentions of canon-typical violence and death, explicit sex, swearing, drinking, bad weather ** see individual chapters for relevant warnings**
Part 1: How Lucky that You Dropped In
Part 2: Listen to the Fireplace Roar *

My monthly book wrap ups My goodreads I mostly read on my e-reader so have only three physical books :( I have to buy all fours for sure! and it's even been translated into my language already!
Well... this month was an interesting one for reading... On the one hand, I read a lot, but on the other... was it good? There were definitely some gems, but also far more flops than I could tolerate. To be fair, the last few months were exceptional reading-wise, and we all know the occasional flop is unavoidable, maybe even necessary, to truly appreciate the good when it comes. Still, I can’t wait for the year to be over. December is all about finishing what I’ve started, and I’m already excited about the stories I'm planning to dive into in 2025!
But let’s rewind and talk about this month’s highlights and lowlights...
Jane Eyre was phenomenal! It's easily one of my favorite reads of the year. Honestly, I loved it even more than Wuthering Heights. The atmosphere (gothic - love), the characters (jane- she's just like me fr), and the depth (It's still so relevant today)—it all clicked perfectly for me.
I buddy-read The Poppy War with a friend, and unfortunately, unlike her, I didn’t enjoy it. I had high hopes for a 5-star experience, but there were just too many things that didn’t work for me. By the time I finished, I thought I’d let it go and not continue the series, but… my OCD won’t let me leave things unfinished. Plus, a part of me is curious about how it all unfolds. Maybe I just read it at the wrong time in my life? Either way, I’ll be pushing forward, maybe even this month.
Then I FINALLY finished Cleopatra and Frankenstein—it took me almost a year. Honestly, it was just... meh. The cover claims it’s 'for fans of Ottessa Moshfegh and Phoebe Waller-Bridge' .... don’t piss me off. I made a separate short post if you want to read more about it.
Next up were Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor and The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber
I decided to focus on wrapping up some fantasy series I’d started earlier this year, and these two were solid sequels! I’m so excited to see how both series end. Also, can we talk about how underrated Daughter of Smoke and Bone is? I know it’s an older series, but why isn’t anyone reading it? It’s so unique, weird, and even a little gross—and I love that!!!!!
Phantasma... I don’t even want to talk about it. I keep seeing people give it high ratings, and it’s just pissing me off.
Kobieta, która kochała owady (Nainen joka rakasti hyönteisiä) is a Finnish novel that had been sitting on my shelf for about a year—it was a Christmas gift from my brother—and I finally picked it up. It was… okay. Not amazing, but enjoyable enough. Sadly, as far as I know, there’s no English translation yet, so I won’t go into detail. But if you love “weird girl” literature, this fits right in.
All Fours by Miranda July... Oh boy. I need to read more of her work. Lucy Dacus described her writing on Goodreads as making her feel like she’s “allowed to exist,” and I couldn’t have put it better myself. This book was a fantastic exploration of monogamy, marriage, aging, menopause, parenting, and sexuality—with just a sprinkle of madness. Absolutely brilliant.
I wrapped up the month with Pits & Poison, a second book in a duology Peaches & Honey, and let me tell you—if you have Kindle Unlimited, go read it now!! This is what I mean when I talk about romantasy. It’s a fantasy series heavily centered on love and romance, but it’s not riddled with cringy, unnecessary smut. The romance felt real. I believed in their love. Everything just made sense. That’s what I want from romantasy. The first book might’ve been my favorite ? but overall, it’s a beautiful series I’d recommend to anyone who loves romance and fantasy (historical fantasy). I’m obsessed with how well it all came together. It was a breath of fresh air!

i feel like since sadie loves yuki she’d loveee to cook things with him and participate in fourth of july even if she’s not american (she’s doing it just for logan) lol
i def think that cooking is older sadie’s hobby she does to get her to calm down and rewind 🥹 specifically anything pasta related and then she would pick up baking too! when she’s older, she would give out little sweets she makes and gives them to the team 🥹 (she still won’t give a full out smile as she gives them but a small grin is better than nothing 😞)
THE FOURTH OF JULY COMMENT. I HAD A THOUGHT OF IT BEING FOURTH OF JULY AND SADIE TREATING IT LIKE ITS CHRISTMAS MORNING.
Like Reader and Oscar are in bed fast asleep, and Sadie manages to open the door to their room and she just stands at the end of the bed, staring at Oscar for him to get up 😭
and oscar wakes up because of that uncomfy feeling of someone watching you and just lets out the mom gasp of being woken up
`· . ୨୧⭒๋࣭ ⭑
“God! Sadie, it’s-… it’s 5:32 in the morning… what are you doing up so early..?”
“It’s the Fourth of July.”
“…But we’re not American…?”
“It’s still Fourth of July (😐).”
“..What..?”
“It’s Logan Day, dad! We have so say hello to him!”

#Rewatchers2000
Re-Watchers With A Thousand Eyes - a Starkid, Shipwrecked and Tin Can Bros weekly watch-along
But this time, the full schedule is hidden.
That's why my chart is so big, its full of secrets!
Its that time of year folks. We've all been hyped up for Nerdy Prudes Must Die, and whether you watched it live, via digital ticket, or not at all - we're now all waiting for its Youtube release.
Now considering Starkid have announced the release will likely be later this year or early next year, I figured now would be a good time to revisit our old friend - the offline watchalong, asychronous watch party, the retro rewind!
An “offline watchalong” is where a show/series is picked as the “show of the week” and everyone who wants to join in watches it at any point in the week they wish to. Then throughout the week as people watch the show, we can make posts, mini-fics (or longer fics if you’re a writing whiz!) and fanart (again for you talented folks) about that week’s show. Or literally just talk about it!
It doesn't matter if you're an old hat or have never seen a show before - all are welcome to join and watch whatever you like.
The schedule will be released gradually - to allow focus for the current themes, but also just in case we get any big surprise teasers [bloody hexagons] and need to pause the watchalong. However I've sorted a schedule that will currently take us to the beginning of October - in the hopes that any news might be then.
Written version of schedule and full how to take part is below!
:readmore:
So how to take part?
Watch the week’s show! You don’t have to watch every single week’s show, if you feel like skipping a week because a show’s not for you, awesome! Curate your own enjoyment and join in again when we reach a show you’re excited for!
Make a post, fic, art etc - the idea is we are all in this watch-along together so seeing everyone’s thoughts on the content is what’s exciting. Not creative? Fabulous, neither am I - my contribution is likely to be “omg I love this bit in xxx when xxx...” - feel free to do the same.
Tag it! As well as tagging with the show/creators, include the tag #ReWatchers2000 so that if anyone doesn’t want to see the content, they can filter it.
Don’t have anything to post? No problem - reblog away! Press that like button! Learn “Listen to Your Heart Joey” in the privacy of your own bedroom just for yourself! Perfect your Oscar Wilde impression in your mirror!
Not seen one of the shows before? Amazing! This could be an opportunity to find something new you hadn’t realised you were missing!
Don’t have time to watch this week? I get you! We’re all busy, but feel free to engage with the content anyway - and hey, you can always watch the show when you’re free in a different week!
Most importantly - be kind. The shows, series, and shorts we’ll be watching are lovingly made by some amazing people who have put in a great amount of time, energy and money into making us amazing content for free! Equally, these fan communities have some incredible fan-work which also takes a lot of love and effort. Be kind about the content you watch and the content that may appear.
Text based version of the schedule

Happy Christmas in July!
Transcript below the break.
Hello and welcome back to the Rewatch Rewind! My name is Jane, and this is the podcast where I count down my top 40 most frequently rewatched movies in a 20-year period. Today I will be celebrating Christmas in July by discussing number 18 on my list: Liberty Films and RKO’s 1946 holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra, written by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Frank Capra, and Jo Swerling, based on a story by Philip Van Doren Stern, and starring James Stewart and Donna Reed.
George Bailey (James Stewart) has always had big dreams of traveling and building things, but instead he’s stuck in his small hometown of Bedford Falls, New York, managing the family building and loan business. When his absent-minded Uncle Billy (Thomas Mitchell) misplaces $8,000 of company money, George feels that he is worth more dead than alive and plans to end his life on Christmas Eve, when he is stopped by Clarence Oddbody, Angel 2nd Class (Henry Travers) who has been sent from heaven to save him. George tells Clarence he wishes he’d never been born, so Clarence shows George what the town would be like without him.
As I’ve mentioned before, my family didn’t have a VCR in the ’90s, but we did sometimes watch movies together when they came on TV, so we caught It’s a Wonderful Life pretty much every year. I don’t know exactly how old I was when I first watched it, but I do remember being confused that it was in black and white. Once we finally got a VCR, we taped it one year so we could watch it whenever we wanted, and then eventually we got it on DVD. At some point we decided that it made a good Thanksgiving movie in addition to a Christmas one, since it’s about being grateful for what you have, so I tended to watch it once or twice a year for a while. I’d probably seen it about 10 times before I started keeping track, and then I saw it once in 2003, once in 2004, twice in 2005, once in 2006, three times in 2008, twice in each year from 2009 through 2012, and then once each in 2013 and 2014, and then once in each year from 2020 through 2022. I don’t remember exactly why I took such a long break after 2014, and I think it was probably a combination of factors, but I do remember reading an article probably around then arguing that Bedford Falls actually would have been more fun without George and that he should have gone to jail anyway that kind of ruined the movie for me a bit. While I recognize that there are legitimate criticisms to be made of the story and message and other details (such as the nonsensical decision to make AS2 the abbreviation for Angel Second Class), for me, the good definitely outweighs the questionable.
For one thing, the acting is superb. Everybody’s at the top of their game, with character actors such as Ward Bond, Frank Faylen, and Beulah Bondi doing some of their best work, and some very impressive child acting, particularly from Bobbie Anderson and Karolyn Grimes. Thomas Mitchell knows exactly when to play Uncle Billy’s memory issues for comic relief and when to reveal how devastating they can be. Henry Travers similarly gives the audience a perfect balance of chuckles and tears. Frequent femme fatale Gloria Grahame makes the initially shallow Violet Bick surprisingly sympathetic. The character of Mary Hatch Bailey is also deceptively simple on the surface, but Donna Reed brings her to life with so much warmth and depth and complexity that it takes several rewatches to fully appreciate her. Lionel Barrymore perfectly embodies the evils of capitalist corruption as Potter, in one of the most diabolical villain performances of all time. And then there’s James Stewart. My man Jimmy. I’m kind of surprised I haven’t had an opportunity to talk about him on this podcast before now, since he’s definitely one of my faves. His performance as George Bailey is SO. GOOD! Just thinking about it gives me chills. We see George go from a young man full of hopes and dreams to a frustrated, drained, broken middle aged man at the end of his rope, to a man trying to make sense of the reality of his non-existence who ultimately learns that he’s a better and more important person than he thought he was. It’s a major emotional roller coaster, and Jimmy Stewart absolutely nails every moment of the ride. It’s rare for a Hollywood film to let a male protagonist get anywhere near as emotionally raw and vulnerable as George Bailey is at several points throughout this film, but Stewart was clearly not afraid to cry on screen, and it’s beautiful to watch.
The sets and visual effects are also beautiful and noteworthy. Falling snow on film used to be created with cornflakes painted white, but a new snow effect using fire extinguisher foam mixed with soap and water was developed for It’s a Wonderful Life. Using this allowed the sound to be recorded live, which had been impossible with crunchy cornflakes, and I feel like it enhanced the performances to not have to record the dialogue separately. The Bedford Falls set was one of the longest sets that had ever been made for an American movie, and the streets and buildings do an excellent job of bringing the audience into the town. Apparently three different cinematographers worked on this movie (they kept getting fired due to disagreements with the director), but the look and feel of the film is remarkably consistent and unique. Plenty of movies set in small towns were made during this era, but somehow none of them feel quite like this one. That could just be my own nostalgia, since this was the first one I saw, but there’s just something about Bedford Falls that sets it apart from other movie settings, and that’s a big part of what I love about this movie. The sets and the lighting and the performances are so engrossing that no matter how many times I rewatch it, I still feel like I’m part of the town, and like I’m interacting with the characters, in a fresh and unique way.
It's interesting that I’m talking about two 1946 movies in a row because I think that, like Notorious, It’s a Wonderful Life could really only have been made that year. James Stewart had left Hollywood to fight in World War II and was considering giving up acting for good when Frank Capra asked him to star in this film. Capra had spent the war making documentaries and propaganda films, and this was also his first post-war movie. Now, I’ve never fought in a war, and my parents are baby boomers so I definitely wasn’t around for World War II, but it stands to reason that their wartime experiences significantly impacted the people involved in making this film and were still fresh on their minds. Stewart apparently said that his PTSD and depression from the war helped him relate to George Bailey, and that acting out George’s anger and frustrations was cathartic for him. The US was also at its most anti-fascist at this time, as James and I briefly discussed last week, which I assume is what allowed this movie to be so blatantly anti-capitalist. Building and Loan associations don’t really exist anymore, but based on my understanding of the Bailey business from this movie, they seem kind of like mutual aid mortgages. Because George holds onto this institution, the people of Bedford Falls are able to afford to buy decent homes for themselves. The alternative that Potter wants is everyone paying him exorbitant rent. By capitalist standards, George is a failure, and was incredibly foolish for turning down Potter’s lucrative job offer in the middle of the movie. But the film portrays him as a hero precisely because he values people over money. When he’s at the end of his rope, Potter has the power to save him (especially because he’s the one who has the cash that Uncle Billy lost) but he refuses; it’s George’s friends and family who rally around to help him. And that sounds like something that would have been considered dangerously close to socialism in the McCarthy era. The Hollywood blacklist started in 1947, so I feel like It’s a Wonderful Life couldn’t have been made even a year later than it was without significant modifications.
One of the main focuses of the story is the romance between George and Mary, but I feel like even that is used as a demonstration of the shortcomings of our capitalist society. They are clearly drawn to each other, but George initially tries to pretend otherwise, in large part because he doesn’t feel good enough for her. She has a college education; he does not. Their wealthy friend, Sam Wainwright, is interested in Mary, and George feels like she would be better off with Sam, even though all she wants is George. They spend all their honeymoon money on supporting Building and Loan clients during a bank run, at Mary’s suggestion, but George later regrets that he couldn’t afford to provide for both his clients and his wife. Mary is perfectly happy with their life, but George feels like a failure by society’s standards and can’t see anything else, so he needs Clarence’s reality check to show him that he has always been enough for her. If George wasn’t constantly being bombarded with the message that he should be making more money, that he should have been able to leave Bedford Falls and make something more of himself, that he should be able to buy his wife and children extravagant things, maybe he could have been happy without divine intervention.
But also we need to talk about what happens to Mary in the alternate reality when George doesn’t exist because I have some very mixed thoughts about that. Earlier, right after George turned down Potter’s offer, he asked Mary why she married a guy like him and she replied, “To keep from being an old maid.” So when George doesn’t exist, she is an old maid. I remember as a teenager who didn’t know that being aroace was a thing and didn’t want to examine why I only ever had “crushes” on celebrities who were already dead, thinking that Mary’s attitude made perfect sense: if you can’t marry Jimmy Stewart, why get married at all? The part that has always confused me is when George begs Clarence to tell him where Mary is, and Clarence says, “You’re not going to like it, George.” Wouldn’t he like it less if she had married someone else? Isn’t it good that she’s consistent with her assertions that he’s the only man for her? I like to think that Mary is on the aromantic spectrum, and feels romantic attraction so rarely that if she hadn’t met George she would never have felt it at all, but even I have to admit that the movie isn’t really trying to say that. It seems to be implying that Mary ending up a librarian with no husband is the worst possible fate for her, which is an infuriatingly amatonormative attitude for a story that otherwise encourages resistance to societal pressures. But overall, I give George and Mary’s romance a pass, because I do think they have a fascinating dynamic, and also because the movie focuses a lot on community and other non-romantic relationships too.
There’s a lot of emphasis on family relationships, and the brotherly bond between George and Harry that is slightly tinged with envy is particularly well done. Harry gets a lot of opportunities that George wants, but George chooses to be happy for and supportive of him rather than resenting him too much. And Harry’s toast at the end – “To my big brother, George, the richest man in town” – is one of the moments guaranteed to make me cry every time. When George is young, he kind of looks down on his father, but finally starts to appreciate him shortly before his death, although not quite enough to understand that it’s good that he follows in his father’s footsteps. His relationship with his mother is very sweet, and the part when she doesn’t recognize him is perhaps the most devastating moment in the movie. I really wish we got to see George interact with his children a bit more; we mostly see them when he’s taking out his work frustrations on them, which doesn’t seem like a typical interaction. His scene with Zuzu and the flower is adorable though. And then there are all the friendships. I don’t know if the Sesame Street characters were named after them, but Bert the cop and Ernie the cab driver have a fun relationship with each other and with George, and I appreciate that we get glimpses of how miserable they both are in the alternate reality. Violet is another interesting character, and at some points it almost seems like she’s being set up as a romantic rival for Mary, but she and George remain a rare good example of male/female friendship. And there are so many other great interactions between the townspeople; it feels like a real community. And it is that community of friends and acquaintances that come together at the end to help George and show him that he’s not alone, and that he has made a positive difference in all their lives. Granted, it’s very clear that Mary is the most important person to him, so the movie does reinforce the relationship hierarchy established by amatonormativity, but at the end, what does Clarence write in the book? “No man is a failure who has friends.”
I want to talk a little bit about representation in this film. There is only one black character, Annie, played by Lillian Randolph, who is, predictably, a maid, and while she is a pretty awesome character, she’s not in very much of the movie, and all the other characters are white. Disappointing, but not surprising for a 1940s Hollywood film. Similarly, while we get a few fabulous female characters, there are a lot more men than women. However, I feel like this movie has better disability representation than the average 2020s movie. It’s a Wonderful Life shows that it’s not that hard to incorporate an actor’s disability into a movie without it being the main focus of the story or the character. They really said, “You use a wheelchair? Awesome, your character uses a wheelchair now.” Of course, they were probably willing to provide more accommodations for the legendary Lionel Barrymore than they would have for an unknown disabled actor, but even he had been replaced in the 1938 film version of A Christmas Carol, in which he’d been slated to play Scrooge, because he couldn’t walk anymore. So I really like that It’s a Wonderful Life showed how effectively he could play a Scrooge-like character without walking.
I also really appreciate that It’s a Wonderful Life is very similar to A Christmas Carol, but kind of flipped. A Christmas Carol motivates the wealthy miser to change his behavior by showing him how happy people would be without him; It’s a Wonderful Life motivates the poor man to change his self-perception by showing him how unhappy people would be without him. A Christmas Carol’s message is that nobody is beyond redemption, which I do believe, but It’s a Wonderful Life responds with, “Let’s be realistic: the extremely rich aren’t going to change their ways; we need to do what we can to limit their power.” Which is a message that, if anything, has only gotten more relevant in the last 77 years. Most of my top 40 movies are fun, silly, entertainment that I use to escape the harshness of reality, but while this movie does have some fun moments, it’s less of an escape and more of a reflection of that harshness. I watch movies like Emperor’s New Groove and Mamma Mia and Bringing Up Baby and Ella Enchanted when I need to laugh; I watch It’s a Wonderful Life when I need to cry. Sometimes I have trouble regulating or understanding my feelings, and a big part of what I love about movies is the way they let us experience deep emotions in a relatively safe and controlled environment. It’s a Wonderful Life has been scorned by some film critics as overly sentimental, and perhaps it is, but I guess I don’t see anything wrong with being overly sentimental every once in a while. Sometimes you just need to feel feelings.
Thank you for listening to me discuss another of my most frequently rewatched movies. Next up is the shortest in a 4-way tie of movies I watched 22 times in the last 20 years, which is another one that I had seen many times before I started keeping track. As always, I will leave you with a quote from that next movie: “This is yet another example of the late neoclassic Baroque period. And, as I always say, ‘If it’s not Baroque, don’t fix it!’”

Mixed Breeds comics 2015
This may be the most packed year so far.
In the story "Do Mixed Breeds Dream Of Electric Sleep?", the duet goes into the world of counting sheep when they have trouble falling asleep.
In "Winn Side Out", a mind-reading accident causes the whole town to get on Winnie's wavelength.
In "Spring Training", Bean and Elizabeth coach a Fetchenshplab team. In "BeatleMortya", Morty starts a band. In "The Dogs Must Be Crazy", Brunswick founds a church.
In "Dawn of the Shed", Muffin's shedding infects the furniture. In "Around the World in 80 Feathers", Postnie goes around the world for Earth Day.
In "The Upda2e 2", an elderly version of the duet looks back at their memories. In "Hello, Doggy!", Bean and Elizabeth audition for opposing plays.
In "The Secret Lives of Bean", "Muffin" discovers Bean has had many past lives. In "The End Of The Tale", Bearl finally catches his tail but doesn't know what to do afterward. And in "Da Doo Ron Ron Ron Da Doo Ron Ron", Sly and the Family Stone visit the town and give it the technology to turn summer doldrums into love. (All these stories feature artificial Muffins, because the real one spent that month stuck on a mountaintop.)
In "The Show Must Go Down", Bean and Elizabeth pull out all the stops to destroy a production of "Annie". And in "Kat Karaoke", Muffin is affected by a karaoke machine.
In "Keep Calm and Post On", the duet infiltrates a poster factory.
In "Son of Baugo", Baugo's decorous son visits. In "Bearl and Muffin's Bird Dubs", the duet has fun dubbing their voices over birds.
In "Journey to the Center of Muffin", Muffin becomes the center of the Earth.
In "Mall for Nothing", the duet builds a mall over nature. In "Forget Me Nut", the squirrels visit a forest made of all the memories they've ever forgotten.
In "Are You Afraid of the Bear", a bear interrupts the duet's scary stories. In "Reggie Rich", the duo starts working for a rich dog.
In "Sports Enemy Mascot Team Dog Football Excitement Time Or Something", fur flies when Bearl and Fitz discover that they root for opposing football teams. In "The Hat In The Chat", Muffin becomes a social media icon by wearing hats.
In "Gratitudicon", Bearl and company start keeping gratitude journals. In "Broadcast Goose", Peat Rewind reports the breaking news of kittens who've lost mittens and the duet takes him seriously. And in "I Want a Dog For Christmas", Bearl gets cloned for the sake of a kid's Christmas present.

A Journey Through Innovation, Culture, and Culinary Delights: Unveiling the Wonders of Epcot
For me, the best times to visit Epcot are March through July when the Epcot Interactive Flower & Garden Festival takes place, July through November when the Food and Wine Festival takes place, and December when Christmas decorations and food are on display.
Future World: The themes of science, technology, and creativity are highlighted in this area of the park. A couple of must-see attractions are Test Track, where you can create your own virtual car and undertake high-speed tests, and Spaceship Earth, a slow-moving dark ride within the famed geodesic sphere. A magnificent imitation of hang gliding is offered by Soarin' Around the World over numerous beautiful spots around the world.
World Showcase: The World Showcase, which has 11 pavilions representing various nations, is a centerpiece of Epcot. Unique architecture, gastronomy, entertainment, and cultural experiences are featured in each pavilion. Explore each pavilion at your own pace, indulge in exotic cuisine, and see live performances by accomplished musicians and artists. Popular attractions include the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros in the Mexico pavilion and the Frozen Ever After ride in the Norway pavilion.
More reasons to go: They recently opened Remy's Ratatouille and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, two brand-new rides. They also recently renovated Epcot Forever, their nighttime fireworks display. A journey of the water, which was inspired by Moana, will soon open.
For visitors of all ages, Epcot can provide a wonderful and enriching experience.

The Clinton Tapes extracts of Bill as a father
Since tomorrow is Father’s Day in the US, here are some cute extracts from the book the Clinton Tapes by Taylor Branch about Bill being a wonderful father to Chelsea.
- Chelsea stopped by, neat as a pin, talking about an exam on Spanish verbs. She said good night and a preliminary goodbye for his long trip. When she was gone, Clinton said former president Bush had been encouraging him to spend more time at Camp David. Bush was hearing of low morale in its vast, attentive support staff, which remained isolated and idle because the Clintons almost never visited. The president said that while he appreciated such concerns, he saw few opportunities to change soon. Chelsea was fourteen years old. The last thing she wished for was a weekend at Camp David, which to her was the middle of nowhere. She stayed home, and her parents wanted to be apart from her as little as possible. So Camp David must wait. May 1994
- When Chelsea stopped by, the president tried to set a time to play cards, or just to talk. He said he had not seen her for a while, but she excused herself to get up early. Clinton looked a bit forlorn, telling me she had a summer job at the National Institutes of Health. July 1994
- Chelsea came in fretting about homework. In an exercise to hone succinct composition, she was writing an essay of no more than one page on the best and worst qualities in the legendary character Dr. Frankenstein, with illustrative passages from the Mary Shelley novel. Chelsea said her draft spilled stubbornly onto a second page, which was unacceptable, and she expressed doubt about her choice of quotations. The president paused to give counsel, and I left the recorders on as he read most of her essay out loud. He liked its cited images of Frankenstein’s passion for learning, enthralled in his lab, cheeks sallow with intense discovery, but he thought Chelsea was slightly ambiguous about whether his best quality was curiosity or ambition. On the negative side, where she wisely pinpointed an overbearing pride as the chief fault, he said she might find shorter, more precise quotes. We both complimented her language about the progressive blindness of Frankenstein’s zeal. Instead of creating life, Chelsea concluded, the mad doctor faced a “monster who had become his bane.” She went off to make revisions, and Clinton promised to consult her again before saying good night. May 1995
- A festering wound could damage sensitive U.S.-Japanese relations for years, Gore warned. Clinton must visit Japan quickly to make amends. Just today, the president told me, he and Gore had tramped back and forth over a crowded calendar. December was out because of nightly Christmas parties, and so on, until Clinton circled dates next April. Horrified, Gore said that would be months too late, especially since the White House was announcing a peace trip to Europe for next week. Why not substitute Japan for Northern Ireland? Alternatively, Gore zeroed in on three lightly committed January days, but the president pronounced them vital to Chelsea’s schoolwork. Gore blinked. So what? He stared through Clinton’s halting explanation why this would be a bad time—because Hillary must join him in Japan, and junior-year midterms are the most pressure-packed events in all of high school. Mutual exasperation spiked. “Al,” Clinton told him, “I am not going to Japan and leave Chelsea by herself to take these exams.” Gore erupted. He thought Clinton had lost his bearings. They had a big fight, said the president, and were still wrangling about dates for Japan. November 1995
- During this preview of the campaign, Chelsea popped in the doorway to say she was sorry she may have disturbed us. She had been singing to herself in the hall, and did not realize we were here. Before he could reply, she vanished, and while I was rewinding the tapes shortly afterward, the president rummaged around the big Ulysses Grant desk. A decade ago, when she was about six, he said Chelsea had skipped into a ceremony at the governor’s office with a briefcase, which he was obliged to open in front of everyone. He showed me a photograph of little Chelsea doubled over in laughter as Clinton squeamishly displayed a boa constrictor inside. His daughter was cheerful and courteous, he said, but she was mischievous, too. May 1996
- His voice surprised me again on Sunday, July 7. He had just finished testifying by videotape for one of the Whitewater criminal trials, in which Ken Starr’s deputy prosecutors were trying to tar him with far-fetched charges against Arkansas bankers. The president was tired, and really needed to spend time with Chelsea. So we must cancel our session tonight. He vowed to catch up soon. Of course, I replied. His staff always handled such logistics, but for some reason he delivered this notice himself. July 1996
- Clinton told stories about Chelsea on our way down the hall. He and Hillary had just returned from her ballet recital. “She’s not an ideal body for a ballerina,” he reflected. “Far from it.” Chelsea was bigger than most of the other girls, who were flat-chested and tiny. She had big bones. Her feet had bled after practice ever since she was a little girl. Nevertheless, she pursued ballet above other arts or sports for which she was more naturally suited. “I’ve always admired that,” he said. “I’ve wondered whether I could ever stick with something for its own sake.” He was inclined to obsess about competitive standing and talent, he said, whereas Chelsea, though smartly aware of her limits, loved everything about ballet including the hard work. August 1996
- Then he lingered on Chelsea’s seventeenth birthday. Because Hillary had been late to dinner at Washington’s Bombay Club, Clinton found himself the delighted sole host to a dozen high school girls in raucous discussions of love and the world. [...] The president glided into stories wholly off my list. Chelsea’s Sidwell Friends School had welcomed seniors to make two-minute spontaneous remarks at a gathering of fathers. On a theme of candid revelation, one girl told the assembly why she and her dad communicated by letter in the same house. Chelsea almost knocked Clinton over, he said, with raw eloquence cutting through the inhibitions of youth and the public eye. She confessed setting her heart all year on tryouts for a part in The Nutcracker, which she did not get. Life’s first major disappointment, as she called it, left her depressed and sleepless, consumed by failure. She could think of nothing but wasted sacrifice. Both parents talked with her late many nights, but she was inconsolable until she woke up fitfully to a letter only an hour old, headed “3am” on her father’s White House stationery. It said he could not sleep, either, being upset because she was upset. He loved her, was proud of her, and believed one day she would find new value in her years of ballet. Somehow these words dispelled a cloud of absorption, she told Sidwell. She still read the note every day. As for his work, she admired what he did in the face of so much invective, but it had not always been so. In preschool, she had cringed as the other children stood proudly to declare their parents’ jobs—doctor, fireman, teacher. Not even she had a clue about governor, and so Chelsea in turn said her mom was a lawyer and her dad cooked the French fries at McDonald’s. She became an instant hit, with by far the coolest dad, but of course the grownups made her promise not to tell lies. Apologizing later to the class, she thought her father just talked on the phone and made speeches, which got the kids briefly excited again because they thought she said he made peaches. Hi there! I’m sorry to be a bother, but I was wondering if you knew the timeline of Servamp or had any ideas? Like if I remember correctly Tsubaki destroyed Mahiru’s school right before summer break (maybe spring?) and that was much earlier in the story. Do you have any ideas or an estimate on what month you think it could be?
Do you mean the timeline of the manga in general or allll the way back to when Sensei made Servamps? I’ll do my best to predict both. First, I’ll list a timeline of the manga. I’ll summarize the arcs and comment on how much time has passed. A little warning, the timeline gets messy around the C3 arc. (Since I’ve read the manga so many times, I’m skimming it so tell me if I miss anything).
We know that it has been 10-11 months since Kuro and Mahiru first met. In the first chapter, Mahiru’s class was preparing for the Cultural Festival. In the most recent chapter (100), it’s stated to be August 25-26.
Chapter 1-5 [Intro/Setup Arc]
The series starts in mid October, likely October 16 (Ironic considering how the manga is centered around vampires). We know this because Mahiru’s class is preparing for the Cultural Festival so it’s a few weeks before then. There is an email with the date October 26. We rewind a week from Oct 26 and then a few more days from when they get the email.
Chapter 6-9 [Sakuya Arc]
There is a time skip of one week after Chapter 5 and is now November 1st or 2nd. The fight takes place two days before the Cultural Festival and Sakuya mentions that Misono has known Mahiru for two weeks now.
Chapter 10 [Bridge/Setup Chapter]
Two weeks has passed since chapter 9. Mahiru mentions that it has been a full month since he met Kuro. Therefore, it is currently November 18.
Chapter 11-13 [Pride’s Introduction and Short Training Arc]
There is a large time skip of 8 months between chapters and it is now July 17. Mahiru mentions that it there is 3 days to Summer Vacation. In Japan, their break lasts from July 20-August 31. (We unfortunately skipped over Kuro and Mahiru’s birthday and Christmas in that time). The festival takes place on the first day of Summer Vacation.
Chapter 14-15 [Sloth Pair Captured in C3 Arc]
No time has passed between the chapters so it is still late July (most likely July 22). Lily also mentions that “I’m still worried about the dynamite attack the other day”. He didn’t say yesterday so I think it’s two days. This is a short arc that takes place over one night.
Chapter 16 [Bridge to Next Arc]
It feels like some times has passed between chapter 15 and 16 but there isn’t any dialogue that suggests how long this could be. The chapter takes place over one afternoon.
Chapter 17-21 [Lust Pair Arc]
There is no indication of how much time has passed. I don’t think it’s much since Mahiru is still discussing the plan to gather the seven servamps from the past chapter. It’s later that night or the next night.
If you count the night scenes, 3 nights has passed in the arc and it ends on the fourth day.
Chapter 22-26 [Greed Pair Introduction/Setup for Next Arc]
Once again, time has passed between chapters but it doesn’t give me a specific time. They set up their headquarters at Tetsu’s onsen and Misono brought his bed there xD I’ll say it’ll take a few days for Misono’s father to agree to let him move a bed into his boyfriend’s onsen :P
I counted the night scenes and two nights have passed. Licht was taken by Higan and Kuro was trapped in the black crystal during the morning of the third day. Combining chapter 16-26, I think a little over a week has passed and it’s early August now.
Chapter 27-38 [Greed Arc / Black Orb Arc]
With the distance limitation, the heroes have to make a plan to save the Greed Pair immediately. Misono specifically says it has been a few hours. A lot happens in these two arcs but everything happens within a single day.
Chapter 39-45 [Introduction to C3′s Idiots and their Headquarters]
C3 immediately comes in to contain the Jinn and capture Tsubaki. Tsurugi does mention that it’s cold like December but Mahiru corrects him that it’s August. I don’t think C3 would let them chill in their house for long so it’s likely still early August.
Chapter 46-79 [C3 Arc]
Please, don’t make me go through this arc again... I don’t want to see my boot-licking son go through all that pain again. Also, the arc jumps around so much that I don’t know if I can make a list of events and determine how much time has passed. They’re inside most of the time so I can’t even count the night scenes to guess how much time has passed.
Bless Tsurugi’s line of “It’s almost my birthday”. The arc ends on August 22.
Chapter 80 [Cool Down of Last Arc]
Three days have passed since the building collapse. The chapter is centered around Tsurugi talking to his friends and learning what happens after he passed out.
Note: Chapter 81 actually takes place before the events of the manga.
Chapter 82-85 [Set Up for Pride Arc and Gluttony Arc]
I believe this takes place later in the day Tsurugi wakes up in the hospital.
Chapter 86-89 [Hospital Attack Arc]
This takes place on the same night as chapter 82-85.
Chapter 90-Current Chapter 100 [London Arc]
We finally get a date!!! :D It was August 25th when they were sent to London. So far two nights has passed and chapter 100 is on August 27th. In chapter 100, Tsurugi calls Mahiru and Kuro to tell them about everything Touma has discovered. Tsubaki plans to revive Sensei as the 9th Servamp on August 31 and that they have 5 more days until then.
Well, this took a long time... Going to bed now.
