AFTER: POETRY DESTROYS SILENCE (2024)
Featuring Melissa Leo, Géza Röhrig, Bo Corre, Alicia Suskin Ostriker, Christine Poreba, Edward Hirsch, Cornelius Eady, Taylor Mali, Walter Fiden, Janet R. Kirchheimer, Sabrina Orah Mark and archival voice footage of Paul Celan.
Directed by Richard Kroehling.
Distributed by Lumen Productions. 76 minutes. Not Rated.
The subtitle of Richard Kroehling’s documentary After is Poetry Destroys Silence. Yet, the poetry is not a destructive force, in fact it is the needed human reaction to destruction – specifically in this case, the Holocaust.
Full of dark, moody visuals and trauma-inducing period photography and footage, After looks at how survivors of the Holocaust – and the families who came in their wake – try to come to terms with the unspeakable evil of the war through art. They did not seek joy in the words that were penned, only understanding and release.
One of the poets here says that journalism looks at the surface of a problem, but poetry digs below the surface to get to the emotions. After uses imagery, storytelling and short films – most significantly in a touching dramatization by acclaimed actresses Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Homicide: Life on the Street) and Bo Corre (Mulberry St.) – to show how difficult and yet important it is to find the words to shine a light in darkness.
“Writing a poem is very often trying to solve a mystery that can’t ever really be solved,” explains celebrated poet Alicia Suskin Ostriker. As she explains, the poetry won’t actually solve it, but it opens up the need to solve it.
Each of these poems have stories and characters and wants and needs and motivations and a sense of horror and longing. None of it will explain the capacity for evil, which was unthinkable then and is still unthinkable now. However, it gives us a chance to cope. Maybe that is enough. Well, not enough, but it is still desperately needed.

Boyd has said that though fans sometimes treated her badly during the Beatlemania era, she has been pleasantly surprised by the younger generations of Beatles enthusiasts who are fans of her now. The first Mrs. Harrison would eventually quit modeling, turn her hobby of photography into a profession, and exhibit her work around the world. As Boyd shared with Taylor Swift in a 2018 interview, she remembers how at one exhibition of her photographs “these girls turned up dressed like me in A Hard Day’s Night.” Still another contemporary homage appears on YouTube with a young actress and model named Devyn Crimson providing a makeup tutorial video so that viewers can achieve the “Pattie Boyd Look.”

Summary Week 6
Lecture 6 Efficiency at Work and at Home
Henry Ford – Manufactured 15 MILLION Model T cars between 1908 and 1927. – Introduced the moving assembly line in 1913. – Lowered cost from $825 to $360 through automated manufacturing. – “Fordism” used to describe rational, automated manufacturing (with moving assembly line and “wage motive”).
F.W. Taylor – Work deserves systematic observation. – Published “Principles of Scientific Management” in 1911. – Separating execution of labor and management of labor leads to more effective work. – Using scientific method enables workers to exceed quotas, earning better pay and increasing output. – “Taylorism” attaches scientific management of time and effort to human labor.
Frank & Lillian Gilbreth – Sought “one best way” to maximize the effectiveness of every movement. – Used photography and film to “make visible the invisible” and understand movement to train and improve workers. – Used scientific management theories to help disabled people learn new ways of moving and working. – Introduced the THERBLIGS!!!! – Yes, you should read “Cheaper by the Dozen” because it is hilarious AND informative.
Christine Frederick – Applied scientific management theory to housework. – Published “Scientific Management of the Home” in 1915. – Focused attention on the need for design in the home to make it function well. – Wrote and lectured extensively (including throughout Europe) about efficiency in the home, and helped shed new light on "women's work.”
Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky – Frankfurt Kitchen, 1926, combined Frederick’s theories with new construction to create the first purpose-built kitchens focused on use (kitchen that supports Taylorism!).
Thomas Lamb – In the mid 1940s he developed the Lim Rest crutch, the Wedge-Lock and the "Universal" handles, and got the ball rolling for Universal Design, which encourages design to create objects that are easy to use by all abilities.
Marc Harrison and the Universal Kitchen project at RISD (1992 – 1998) used principles of Universal Design to re-imagine the kitchen. This, FINALLY, got the kitchen to be more than a machine, and more than an assembly of well functioning equipment and pretty cabinets.
Also included in a tiny way: - Ergonomi Design Gruppen’s 1970’s work to create objects through universal design - Early (1970s) thinking about the relationship between ergonomics and universal design: - Emilio Embasz and Giancarlo Piretti - Peter Opsvik - Fred Scott
And I snuck in the amazing: -Eileen Gray

In 1978, a Kiss concert was an epoch-making event. For the three teen fans in Detroit Rock City getting tickets to the sold-out show becomes the focal point of their existence. Loucks Art Direction: Lucinda Zak Associate Producer: Tim Sullivan Stunt Coordinator: Alison Reid Co-Producer: Art Schaefer Movie Reviews: Wuchak: _**Great 70’s songs, sometimes amusing, but basically an insult to KISS fans**_ In 1978, four teenagers from Cleveland plan to go to a KISS concert in Detroit and have many misadventures reaching their goal. The four are played by Edward Furlong, Giuseppe Andrews, James DeBello and Sam Huntington. “Detroit Rock City” (1999) features great rock/metal from the 70s by KISS, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Van Halen, Sweet, Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, Styx, David Bowie, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent, the Ramones, etc. There are some fun moments, but the tone is too over-the-top for its own good and the story isn’t very compelling. Couple this with some odious bathroom non-humor, a lack of attractive women beyond Natasha Lyonne and the negative one-dimensional depiction of the protagonists and you have a curiously disappointing teen flick. The focus on pot-obsessed dudes is disingenuous since Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons were never into the drug culture; their idea of a party was working hard creating music, performing, touring, making money and celebrating gorgeous women. Unsurprisingly, mind-blowingly beautiful females were always attracted to KISS and frequented their concerts; so were dynamic, talented males. I’m not saying pot-worshipping, denim-clad waifs weren’t an element of their fan base, but KISS devotees always involved WAY more than this. No wonder Paul Stanley lamented: “To call it a KISS movie does it a disservice, because it does a disservice to the KISS fans, which is what it’s really about.” The film runs 1 hour, 35 minutes, and was shot entirely in the Toronto area. While Sword Art Online Alicization focuses on Kirito and beloved newcomer Eugeo’s journey through the Underworld to defeat the evil Pontifex, War of Underworld follows Alice, who rediscovers her will to be a knight, as she cares for Kirito, who has lost his soul. Joined by familiar friends from the Sword Art Online series, the fate of Underworld and the future of mankind rest on the still-slumbering Black Swordsman, Kirito.
The War of Underworld arc premiered in October 2019, with the English dub airing on Adult Swim’s Toonami in January 2020. Aniplex of America released the Sword Art Online Alicization Complete Blu-ray Set on April 21, 2020, available now on RightStuf.
All episodes of season 1 and 2 of Sword Art Online Alicization are streaming now on Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Funimation, while Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld is streaming on HIDIVE.

About Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld:
“And so the grand finale of the Alicization arc begins…”
The final load test… The war between the Human Empire and the Dark Territory has engulfed Underworld entirely. The battle has shifted course with the Dark Territory army led by Gabriel, who seeks to capture Alice, the Priestess of Light, in their fight against Asuna and the Human Empire forces fighting to save Underworld.
As Kirito’s consciousness remains buried in a deep sleep, Gabriel, standing in as the Dark God Vecta, has recruited thousands of American players to log in to the Underworld to annihilate the Human Empire forces.
In this great war, the stakes are not only the Underworld’s continued existence, but also the bottom-up artificial intelligence, the ultimate AI, and even the very future of mankind!
Though he has yet to awaken, only one man holds the fate of this world: the Black Swordsman.
