‘Nightline’ Posts Gains in Total Viewers Season to Date

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (708,000), Adults 25-54 (162,000) and Adults 18-49 (102,000) during the week of July 31, 2023, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” took the top spot, beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in overall viewers and the key Adult news demo for the 13th straight week.

Season to date, “Nightline” is growing compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+2% – 884,000 vs. 864,000). In addition, “Nightline” leads CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.

This week “Nightline” covered former President Trump’s indictment as well as co-anchor Juju Chang’s interview with GOP presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson on Trump’s latest arraignment; the human toll of extreme heat; the “Barbiecore” trend skyrocketing after the release of the record-breaking “Barbie” movie; an instance of unrest in New York City as a social media star announced a giveaway; the story of Christina Boyer chronicled in ABC News Studios’ “Demons and Saviors” and more.

NOTE: CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “The Late Late Show-JC-ENC” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” was retitled to “Seth Meyers-SM.” The retitled telecasts are excluded from the season averages.

Don’t get run over at Costco!

Do you remember panicking in March 2020, the beginning of covid, when you fought with everyone else to get the meager amount of supplies your nearby store still had? Well, today we are going to dig deep into this matter and find out once and for all why there was a shortage of supplies, specifically, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and face masks.

Imagine walking into Costco on a peaceful Sunday morning in 2020 and suddenly you get run over by a crowd of people. Everyone is pushing through each other and you are just so confused. Maybe it’s the launch of the newest virtual reality device. Maybe it’s the launch of a rocket ship. But suddenly you get disappointed because you realize what everyone is rushing towards: plain old boring toilet paper. The Costco workers just stocked up the aisle and it appears that people are taking as many packs of toilet paper as they can physically hold on to. By the time the crowd clears and you walk up to the shelves, it is all empty. You really needed the toilet paper, but now you have to resolve to use something else. You can’t believe that toilet paper is ruining your mood. Why is this happening? 

Data from market research firm Nielsen indicated that in the United States, toilet paper sales surged by around 845% in March 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Similar trends were observed in other countries affected by the pandemic. Nielsen also indicated that hand sanitizer sales in the United States surged by approximately 600% in March 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. Another research firm, NPD, noted that sales of face masks in the U.S. increased by approximately 300% in 2020 compared to 2019

This enormous surge in sales is caused by arguably the most important concept in economics: supply and demand. Costco has a limited stock of supply. When an increased amount of people want something, it is called an increase in demand. However, goods are limited. Many households want extra toilet paper during the pandemic as it is a necessity in their daily lives. This causes an increase in the demand for toilet paper. Therefore, whenever Costco stocks up on these items, a lot of people would buy it at once, and Costco would run out fast. This concept translates equally over to hand sanitizer and face masks which also saw a increase in demand during the pandemic since both items helped prevent the virus.

In order to meet all these new demands the market equilibrium must shift. Due to the sudden increase in demand of all these products, the market equilibrium, which is still operating under the old demand, cannot produce a quantity that’ll satisfy everyone causing a shortage. In order to meet the new demands the market equilibrium has to shift to the right where a greater quantity of items will be produced and therefore meeting the needs of everyone. 

So why does toilet paper run out so fast at Costco? When everyone really wants the same thing at the exact same time, there is only so much supply that people can get since the market hasn't adjusted to this new demand yet. The shelves will be emptied out fast and sometimes people will end up without anything. Let’s compare this to a common situation with a group of friends. There are 10 people in this friend group. One of the friends brings a pack of Welch’s Fruit Snacks. A pack contains 6 gummies. The friends who takes the first 6 gummies gets to eat them, but four other people don’t get one. There isn’t enough for every friend! In order for everyone to get one, either more gummies need to be brought next time, or there needs to be less friends.

Estoy navegando por algunos detalles previos a la carrera y hay mucho de qué hablar. #Rolex24 Primero, una rápida lección de historia para aquellos que no están familiarizados: el Rolex 24 es una carrera de resistencia de autos deportivos de 24 horas organizada en el Daytona International Speedway en Daytona Beach, Florida. Es como el Bonkers del Mundo del automovilismo, y siempre me entusiasma las semanas previas a este evento. Automobili Lamborghini está lanzando su primera copa de un solo fabricante en América del Norte este año, lo cual es bastante interesante. También se hablará mucho de la última etapa de la Copa Porsche GT3, que verá a 31 equipos compitiendo este año. Por si eso no fuera suficiente para bombearte... imagina esto. Solo una broma. Las Carreras de Resistencia son una excelente demostración de durabilidad, fiabilidad y trabajo en equipo. Son una prueba real para los autos y los conductores. #EnduranceRacing Lo que me emociona en particular es ver cómo se desempeñará el #CadillacRacingTeam en la pista como resultado de los ajustes de su V8 turboalimentado por IMSA justamente antes del evento. Este es un evento realmente imperdible para cualquier fanático de los autos. Por otro lado, Wayne Taylor Racing está cambiando las cosas al aumentar la potencia de su máquina. Infinite Life at Altantic Theater

Did they kiss?

No. Sofi (Kirk) and Nelson (Simpson) did not kiss, although there was a proposal of kissing that was not taken up on because Sofi likes to get to the airport really early. However, there were some dirty messages left and some very specific declarations of characters' desires. The other characters did not appear to be romantically or sexually interested in each other, although one could argue the ladies shared an intimacy of a different kind.

Should they have?

No, it was good that they didn't kiss. The relationship between Sofi and Nelson is not about personal connection and more a way to explore desire, and at least for Sofi, desire is a way that she attempts to have some control over a body that feels like it controls her, to give pleasure to a body that is filled with pain. So for her to have control in the last moments of the play to say no to the proposed tete-a-tete, as tempted as she was, felt important to witness. Also, it really is so important to get to the airport early. Sofi does ask for and recieve a picture of Nelson's colonoscopy which, weirdly, did feel like a consumation of their "relationship".

The most intimate moment in the play was when Sofi lifted Eileen's (Burke) legs to give Eileen a moment free from pain. That was very tender, sweet, and simple, like the best kisses are.
