Over this past weekend, there was this hashtag trending on Twitter: #ChristianPrivilege. Not so surprisingly, there was a lot of... vitriol... on both sides of the discourse... and emotions were... running quite high. I also feel that plenty of people... from both sides of the discourse... are missing some important... nuances... when it comes to this subject. It should be recognized and acknowledged that there are, in fact, places in this world where... Christians get persecuted... or even killed... for their faith. That is a sad fact that... we cannot ignore. At the same time, however, Christians here in the US are... are far from being a... an oppressed minority. In fact, in many ways, Christianity is still a... privileged religion in this country. Being asked to... recognize and acknowledge the existence of other religious groups... is really not the same thing as... oppressing your own religion. I believe that this is what many people are referring to... when they talk about ‘privilege’. I’m gonna say the same thing about Christians as I do about Muslims. It is possible to be the oppressed in *one* circumstance... and to be the *oppressors* in another circumstance. American Christians don't get to... use the suffering of their... religious brethren... in other parts of the world... to claim that they *themselves* are oppressed for their religion. Somehow, I do not think that... their persecuted brethren... would much appreciate the comparison. I should take this moment to mention that I myself am a Christian... albeit, maybe not a... not a very *orthodox* Christian. I never really believed in a literal eternal hell - as this, to me, just doesn’t jibe well with the concept of a... of an all-loving God. Likewise, I don't feel the need to... to shove my religion onto that of others. People who claim that... simply becoming a Christian yourself is a... an easy fix to dealing with ‘Christian privilege’ here in this country... they are missing a vital point here... that people should not have to believe or think a certain way... to gain acceptance. People should be accepted as themselves... barring, of course, hate philosophies. But, as long as they aren’t hurting others, there’s no reason why anyone should have to... change who they are. Not to mention that it’s also not very useful advice to... members of the LGBTQ community... many of who were... rejected from their religious communities... simply for their sexuality or gender identity. So, this is my take on the whole... ‘Christian privilege’ discourse.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this conversation with Christian friends of mine regarding the push to allow businesses to discriminate against lgbt folks in terms of hiring.

When it’s a gay or trans person being fired, they always resort back to “businesses should be able to hire/fire whoever they want without the government getting involved!!!!”

But then if you ask them if businesses should be able to fire someone for being a Christian, they suddenly change their position and no longer agree that the government shouldn’t be involved.

They want Christian privilege, not equal rights.
