Linguistic attitudes
Charles Rada – [email protected]
During the catholic inquisition in Spain between 1478 and 1834, European intellectuals preserved records of the grotesque abuses of the Spanish Crown against Christian protestants and other religious minorities, with the purpose of preserving the catholic power and influence. Over the years, that negative perception and stereotypes were extrapolated to the Hispanics in what today is called United States. (Garcia, 1993) this historical connection assumed that Hispanics came from an uncivilized and a cruel cultural origin, compared to the Anglo-Saxon civilization. The circumstances set the scenario for a negative perception of the Spanish culture and language. An atmosphere that also expanded to more countries portraying Spain as an intolerant, fanatic and barbaric kingdom, which received the name of Spanish Black Legend.
The perception of the language evolved over time and nowadays there are techniques to scientifically study this matter. Diaz-Campos (2014) follows Preston (2004) investigation and states that social psychology has been fundamental in the development of techniques to investigate the attitudes towards a language, such as the semantic differential scale. This tool unveils the affective evaluation from the speakers towards a linguistic object. Diaz-Campos illustrates the usage with the example of a speaker using haiga instead of haya, allowing the researcher ask about what attitudes would that generate among the participants group, if they are given the semantic differential scale to rate their feelings towards the word choice. They could rate from urban to rural; friendly to unfriendly; educated to uneducated.
The study of the perception of a language works with surveys, interviews and investigations involving scales and other techniques. These investigations search for direct or indirect reactions of the participants towards certain expressions of a group in the community. These evaluations could find reflections of stereotypes and social prejudice still living today. (Diaz-Campos, 2014)
Galvis (2010) focused on a different approach, following Fishbein and Ajzen Reasoned Action Theory which was confirmed by a simple and partial correlation analysis in a study carried out in the city of Ventura, California to survey the perception of bilingualism in the community by K-12 students in two different schools. Fishbein and Ajzen developed their theory in 1975 and integrates variables related to decision-making to a conductual level. The authors understood the human being as a rational animal that process any information and is capable of using it systematically.
In her findings, Galvis confirmed differences between the minority Spanish-speaking students and the majority English-speaking students. The English-speaking majority were raised by parents with more educational instruction and were born in the United States, which gave them more economical stability and expected to pursue higher education instruction. In the other hand, the minority group, were children of Mexican parents with lower educational instruction. Had fewer time living in Ventura and didn’t have expectations of pursuing higher education. Despite these differences and have a minority-majority situation, both groups showed a very positive rating towards bilingualism Spanish-English. An enriching and peaceful coexistence of two languages, but Galvin (2010) considers that Spanish (the minority language) will likely decrease and be in disuse.
These findings show the importance of preserving multilingualism along with multicultural programs. Preserving the heritage of Spanish from very early stages in school is paramount for strengthening these positive perceptions and integration of older generations that were unable to access English education. From this practice, not only the Hispanic minority would benefit, but also the majority English-speaking would have access to linguistic tools that could expand their professional and social life, end the stigma towards Spanish inherited from previous centuries and also help integrate the Hispanic population of the country, that happens to be the fastest growing minority in the United States. (Pew Research Center, 2018)

Lukewarm Stove: Squashing Harper Rumors, Realmuto Progress, Yankees and Machado, Kimbrel’s Market, More
Well, I said many moons ago that I thought this offseason was not going to be like the last one, but here we are, on the doorstep of February, waiting on two of the top free agents in the last decade to sign, while many other valuable free agents are still in limbo. Can pitchers and catcher’s report yet, please?
Rumors …
As Brett addressed earlier today, rumors had been flying everywhere – mostly based on a video game’s Twitter account and some gamblers out in Vegas – that Bryce Harper was going to be signed by the Phillies before the end of the day. HOWEVA, Jim Salisbury, who writes for NBC Sports Philly (and would likely have some knowledge of this situation), jumped on the radio to say “I’ve been hearing all the same hysteria all morning as you have. I’m not feeling anything coming down today.”
Obviously, that’s far from a straight-up denial, but combined with our existing suspicions over the veracity of the rumor (or the wisdom of believing a video game’s insight on social media), I’m going to guess it doesn’t break today. That is NOT to say the Phillies won’t ultimately be the landing spot – they’re my odds-on favorite – but I just don’t think it’s going down that way.
Yesterday, we learned that the Marlins had made some progress with the Reds on a deal for J.T. Realmuto, but apparently no deal is particularly close … and multiple teams are still involved:
I think the Marlins’ painfully slow pace is probably due to a series of circumstances. First, everyone and their grandma knew Realmuto was going to be traded this offseason, so even if he was fairly marketed as the best catcher in the NL, the Marlins’ leverage probably started off a bit low. Second – and related – after being consistently and wholly chided over their inability to secure solid returns for the 2017 NL MVP (Giancarlo Stanton), 2018 NL MVP (Christian Yelich), and Marcell Ozuna last offseason, the Marlins are overcorrecting and keeping the price for Realmuto unrealistically high. And finally, Realmuto’s offensive breakout is exactly one season long. He was an extremely valuable catcher before that, too, but he was clearly on another level last year. Matching value for two years of Realmuto probably isn’t as easy as it might seem.
But if the Reds do manage to pull this one off, we’ll all have to take them very seriously in 2019. A team with Joey Votto, Scooter Gennett, Eugenio Suarez, Yasiel Puig, and J.T. Realmuto (not to mention Alex Wood, Nick Senzel, Jose Peraza, and Raisel Iglesias) might legitimately have four or five All-Stars and a real shot at disrupting the NL Central – at least, for one year.
For what it’s worth, Heyman just recently added that the Reds are “pretty adamant about keeping Nick Senzel,” their top prospect, “however, Reds are well stocked with prospects (Trammell, India, etc.) so they remain in the Realmuto hunt.”
Manny Machado remains homeless for 2019, and the Padres have emerged as a legitimate, last-minute contender. HOWEVA, Jon Heyman reports that Mike Moustakas might be a more realistic target for him, especially as his former teammate from Kansas City, Eric Hosmer, has highly recommended him. But while Moose and Machado could both play third base, that’s about where the similarities end. Moustakas is five years older, can’t play shortstop, is nowhere near the hitter Machado is, and should cost about oh, say, $225M less (maybe a lot more).
Oh, come on:
The Yankees sure *seemed* like the favorite on Machado once upon a time, but that feels like ages ago. They now have so many infielders in house, I just can’t imagine they’ll be the final destination.
Look at this weird freaking structure, as the Dodgers continue to Dodger:
So not only did they trade two outfielders and a starting pitcher and then not sign Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, they’ve also fallen out (or, at least back) of the running on J.T. Realmuto and have a crazy contract structure for A.J. Pollock, which pays him just $1M in salary (plus a $12M signing bonus) in 2019. I honestly have no clue why they’re pretending the luxury tax threshold matters, because it doesn’t – and not just because they’re the Dodgers.
Freddy Galvis gets a $5M deal from the Blue Jays, which is a reminder of this angle:
One free agent we haven’t discussed at all this offseason is closer Craig Kimbrel – though it’s not for no reason. Kimbrel is an absolutely dominant closer and even if the 2018 season wasn’t his best, it was still something plenty of teams would project and covet for 2019. The problem early on, however, was that Kimbrel was reportedly looking for a deal in the $100M range over 5-6 seasons, which was laughable then and nearly nonsensical now. He’s not crazy for asking for that much, mind you, given what Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen got just a couple years ago (you try to top what came before), but things are different now, and if it didn’t happen in November/December, it’s certainly not happening now.
And that goes quadruple for the Cubs, who weren’t signing closers to massive deals even when they had some money to spend.
But where does that leave the All-Star closer now? Well, it’s hard to say. Dan Hayes seems to think a short-term, high AAV deal could be in Kimbrel’s future, and the Twins could be the team to offer it. Nothing about this market has made sense, so why not? And if you’re holding out hope for the Cubs, I wouldn’t. There are some attractive things about Chicago on a one-year deal – he’d be joining an immediate contender with a wide-open closers job in a big-market, where he can remain relevant as he builds up another run at free agency – but the Cubs just don’t seem open to spending that kind of money, even for a single year. There’s also no real guarantee that things would be any better for Kimbrel next year. He could probably squeeze out some more dollars overall by going year-to-year, as we’ve seen others do this winter – but if there’s a reasonable multi-year deal out there, he might just take it.
It’s crazy that right now, any team could add two instant MVP candidates (Harper/Machado), arguably the game’s best closer (Kimbrel), and one of the top starters in baseball (Dallas Keuchel) for only money. Pitchers and catchers report in two weeks.

Here are your 2018 Gold Glove finalists
The Red Sox and Braves top the list of nominees with five finalists each.
Gold Glove nominees were announced on Thursday afternoon, with Rawlings taking advantage of the World Series offseason to remind everyone of all the talented fielders worthy of being honored this year. The winners will be announced in a few weeks once the postseason is wrapped up and we’re looking towards the free agency frenzy, so for now we can debate who belongs here
One World Series team had five nominees, with the entire Red Sox outfield nominated (which is not remotely surprising) plus a pair of infielders as well. The other team in the Fall Classic had none, with the Dodgers getting nary a mention on this list.
Other teams topping the list of nominees include the Braves with five, the Indians, A’s, and Brewers with four, and the Astros, Angels, Yankees, Diamondbacks, and Cubs with three nominees a piece.
Below, a full list of finalists across both leagues.

Your Monday Morning Roundup
Bad news: The Phillies are tied with the Braves atop the NL East.
Good news: It’s the last time we see Freddy Galvis until next year.
It wasn’t a good weekend for the Phils as they lost two of three to the NL-worst Padres in San Diego, despite getting another bat in Justin Bour.
Friday saw the Phils’ offense silenced as Jacob Nix helped San Diego to a 2-0 shutout after allowing four hits and four strikeouts in six innings. Despite the loss, Zach Eflin, who was later optioned to Triple-A to make room for Bour, went six innings and gave up two runs off five hits with eight strikeouts. As for Galvis, he went 2 for 3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
The bats did return on Saturday, delivering two home runs from Maikel Franco and Cesar Hernandez along with a Nick Williams triple in a 5-1 win. It also helped that Aaron Nola was on the mound and threw six innings. He gave up four hits and three walks to go along with five strikeouts.
But the rubber match saw Jake Arrieta turn in a really forgettable performance. The right-hander went five innings but gave up eight hits and five runs on four strikeouts in a 9-3 loss. He gave up a grand slam homer in the third to none other than Galvis. The bats were also silenced until the eighth when the Phils had a mini-rally and scored three runs to try to make something out of it. But Austin Davis gave up three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Bour did come in to pinch-hit and got a single in the ninth.
With the 2-4 west coast road trip done, the Phils return home tied for first in the NL East with the Braves. And the schedule doesn’t get easier after the day off, as the team welcomes Boston for their second two-game series of the season. After that, there’s a ton of competition against the NL East. Bour could be the key to having success in the next month and a half.
But let’s hope the offense fixes the train-wreck.

The Roundup:
After the team’s loss to the Steelers in the preseason opener Thursday night, which included some national anthem stuff, the team had a day off from practice before returning to the Linc for their final open session of training camp.
Nick Foles returned while Dallas Goedert left early. Some thought it was a broken arm, but that’s why you don’t trust #FansWithSources.
Goedert’s arm was still attached Sunday and he said it was only a bruise. Also, Avonte Maddox got reps as the first team slot corner. He’s been rising as of late. In both days, Markus Wheaton and Donnel Pumphrey didn’t practice. That ain’t good for either of them.
And then, a surprise.
The #Eagles are signing QB Christian Hackenberg, source said. Not a reflection on health of Wentz/Foles or anything else — just a chance to try developing another QB with talent, as they have with Nate Sudfeld.

You’d think that’d mean the end of the Joe Callahan era right? WRONG. Ian Park was waived/injured. This was his best moment as an Eagle:

Adam Zaruba was also officially waived.
In other news, Carson Wentz may have better velocity in his third year:
Arm strength has always been one of Wentz’s strengths, and it was perhaps logical to expect that the velocity on his throws would dip a bit, simply because he is still rehabbing his torn ACL and LCL, suffered in December of last year. That has not been the case. In fact, according to data the Eagles use that tracks such things, Wentz is throwing with more velocity than he was in 2016 or 2017.
“Those are things we track actually with the footballs and things that we have,” said Doug Pederson when asked if Wentz’s velocity has improved from last year to this year. “We can monitor that stuff. Velocity has been up, accuracy has been up. Those are the things he’s been able to work on over the course of the year.
“He got better last year, obviously, in games. To me it’s all about eye placement, decision making, accuracy, timing. It’s all about the eyes and where you throw it and how you see it. That’s one thing he’s continued to get better at and work on. I do feel like now, because of the injury, he’s focusing a little more on lower body strength. It’s really correlated to velocity and overall speed of the throw.”
In other words, assuming the data is correct, it’s more of a fact that Wentz is throwing with more velocity than it is the opinion of a reporter or a head coach.
Isaac Seumalo may be one of the most improved players on the roster. But the high snaps are a reason why he might be on the roster bubble:
“If you ask any player in our locker room on the offensive line, they’d tell you the same thing: He’s probably the most improved player right now. That guy’s having an unbelievable camp,” Stoutland said. “Then he goes and snaps the ball over the QB’s head and we lose 17 yards on a run, which was wired – the run was going to be a good run.
“Isaac is very conscientious, he’s very intelligent. He’s got Kelce ability with setting protections and all that stuff. … When he gets all excited a little bit, that’s when something like that happens. The one thing Isaac will do is, he’ll learn from that.”
Seumalo, 6-4, 303, said he understands the high snaps have to stop.
“I know the coaches and guys are concerned about it. I’m going to work on it, and it will get fixed,” he said. “I’m 100 percent positive about that.”
We almost had another Deflategate on our hands, but the league quickly ended that possibility.
New Vikings offensive coordinator and former Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo had nice things to say about his former boss:
FMIA: What are the most valuable lessons you take from working with Doug Pederson?
DeFilippo: “Two things I’m going to give you. Number one, trust in his assistant coaches. He trusted [offensive coordinator] Frank Reich to pull the whole thing together. He and Frank both trusted all the offensive assistants to have our own areas and be the master of that area. So the trust on that coaching staff was earned—if Doug put you in charge of red-area plays, he trusted you to be the best in the league at knowing the best things to do in that area. Number two: Coach is gonna do it his way. His way is pedal to the medal. He wants to score on every play. He gets upset sometimes because we don’t score on every play, in a good way. He’s going to stay on the attack when there’s that point in the game where you can either try to put an opponent away or just kind of ride it out. He’ll always take the shot to put the opponent away. And the players followed. In all we did, we locked arm and arm, here we are, and prepared the same no matter who we played. Our term for that year was, ‘faceless opponent.’ And each week we treated our opponent like it was a faceless person.
“I should also say in my two years in Philadelphia, I never heard Mr. Lurie [owner Jeffrey Lurie] say no to anything we needed. I mean, Nick Foles was having some issues in training camp last year and we bought this special machine to help him in his rehab that cost a lost of money. We also had an emphasis in the draft and free agency on bringing in quality people. There’s gonna be a time in the NFL season when you’ll have ups and downs—a player mad at a coach, a coach mad at a player, an argument on the field. If you have good character people and great locker room character, I think you get over those things. Carson Wentz goes down in December, and as awful as we felt for him, everybody’s ready to step in and do a little more—because we knew we all had to.”
The Sixers released their 2018-19 schedule on Friday. They’re on national TV 27 times this year.
We were also blessed with a montage of T.J. McConnell assists.
#NBAAssistWeek is incomplete without a @TJMcConnell highlight video.

The Union earned three big points in a 3-2 win over New England Saturday night. Jack Elliott had two first half goals and Fafa Picault scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 76th minute. So yes, Philadelphia beat New England in football… again.
In other sports news, Brooks Koepka held off Tiger Woods to win the PGA Championship. It’s his second major this year and third overall. Tiger was definitely back.
The Jaguars (probably Tom Coughlin) suspended Jalen Ramsey and Dante Fowler for one week for “violating team rules and conduct unbecoming of a Jaguars football player.” Yep, definitely Coughlin’s idea.
Rob Ellis left NBC Sports Philadelphia.
DelcoDelphia debuted their latest edition of the Philly Power Hour.
Saquon Barkley had a beautiful run in his preseason debut and Dak Prescott finally threw a touchdown pass this preseason!
College lacrosse, if you care, is getting a 60 second shot clock. It’ll become more like basketball.
In the news, there was a triple shooting outside a graduation party in East Oak Lane.
White nationalists were outnumbered at their own rally in Washington D.C. yesterday.
Pentagon chief Jim Mattis is fine with a Space Force.
