THIRD PERSON POV

chris didn't realize he had made a mistake until it was far too late. he thought that amelia was the girl he wanted, but he soon realized that he couldn't have been more wrong.

he really, truly though that he would have enough will and time to choose between the two girls, however he didn't realize that as he chased them both, he was losing the girl that was the one for him.

VINTAGE TEE, BRAND NEW PHONE, HIGH HEELS ON COBBLESTONES

as y/n and chris made their way home from some random los angeles party, the couldn't help but giggle each time y/n's heels clicked against the cobblestone path they walked along. the two couldn't help their drunken giggles as they blindly made their way home.

"you should take those off before you hurt yourself." chris laughed, his hand intertwined with hers as he held his phone in the other.

"i'll be fine. you never told me where your shirt was from by the way."

"it's from some vintage thrift store back home in boston."

"i like it." she whispered, titling her head as she stared at him beneath the streetlight.

"let me take a picture of you, i don't have any on this phone yet." chris smiled, taking the picture as she blushed, watching as he set as his lockscreen.

BUT I KNEW YOU, DANCING IN YOUR LEVI'S, DRUNK UNDER A STREETLIGHT

the two continued their walk home, haphazardly walking into each other as they stumbled further down the path. their hands loosely intertwined with each other's, chris couldn't help pull her closer to him, his other hand falling to her waist as he softly rocked their bodies back and forth, humming a slow beat to a song playing quietly in his head.

"i like this side of you." she whispered, brushing his hair out of his eyes at he smiled down at her.

"not many get to know this side of me, but you do."

"i wanna know every side of you." she smiled back, watching as his eyes sparkled slightly.

y/n slowly walked ahead, unaware of chris' phone pinging in his pocket, another girl blowing up his messages wondering where he was as she missed him.

with a shameful sigh, he plucked his phone from the back pocket of his levi's, swiping away the notifications she sent his way.

HAND UNDER MY SWEATSHIRT, BABY KISS IT BETTER // SAID I WAS YOUR FAVOURITE

chris hand was beneath the back of y/n's sweater as she cried against his chest, her head hurting from the amount of stress she had dealt with during the day.

"baby, can you kiss it better?" she teased, trying to lighten her mood, making chris roll his eyes before pressing a gentle kiss to the girl's forehead, smiling against her skin as she keened into his touched.

walking backwards, he led her to her couch, falling back against the cushions, pulling her on top of him as he continued to rub her back, hoping to ease some of her stress.

"you're my favourite person, y'know that?" chris whispered as she laid her head on his chest, her fingers dancing along his bicep as they laid there.

"i am?"

"without a doubt."

CHASE TWO GIRLS, LOSE THE ONE

y/n hadn’t meant to pry and prod, but chris had grown distant lately, he was off around her and she was curious. so when his phone pinged while he was in the shower, she let her curiosity get the best of her. but she wished she hadn't as she read the notification that lit up his screen.

every time she re-read the girl's message, it chipped away at her heart. how could chris do this her? betrayed couldn't even begin to describe how she felt. as chris' screen faded to black, she heard the water shut and she couldn't be bothered to move. she didn't realize she was crying until chris was kneeling in front of her, gently wiping her tears.

"what's wrong y/n?"

"who's amelia?"

"wait what?" chris sputtered, her question sending shockwaves through this body as she stared at him, completely unsure of who was kneeling before her.

"who is she?"

"she's no one, baby i promise."

"tell me the truth, who is she, chris?"

"i met her the night we came home from that party and i've been seeing her occasionally since." he whispered, finding no use in lying to her as she sat there, her tears of sadness becoming tears of anger as she felt her hurt settle in her heart.

"get out."

"what?"

"get out. i'm done. we're done. i'm not going to sitting around while you chase some other girl."

BUT I KNEW YOU'D LINGER LIKE A TATTOO KISS // I KNEW YOU'D HAUNT ALL MY WHAT-IFS

for months following her breakup with chris, y/n had been a shell of who she used to be. she hadn't experienced the heartbreak he caused before in her life. it had left behind a different kind of hollow in her chest. a void that no one would fill.

no one except chris.

and for months, he lingered in her life. in the back of her mind as she walked down the streets they used to walk together. the ghost of his lips pressing against her temple every time she had a migraine. the feeling of his hand beneath her sweater, fingertips mindlessly drawing shapes the small of her back as she laid in bed. the smell of his cologne stubbornly sticking to her pillow cases on his side of the bed.

he was everywhere and she couldn't forget him. he was a ghost unable to move on as she felt swallowed and suffocated by her pain. she didn't know what to do and she couldn't take the after-shocks that his infidelity put her though.

he invaded every thought she had.

what if i'm not good enough?

what if was i enough for chris?

what if they cheat on me like chris did?

what if i can't move on?

what if chris is hurting too?

he was everywhere in her mind. he haunted every possible chance she had at moving past the pain she felt.

y/n knew chris would come miss her once the thrill of being with amelia had faded. she wasn't someone chris could be with long time, from what she had been told by people knew her. she knew he'd come back, he made a promise that he'd find his way back to her as he walked out of her house that night.

but as she pulled into her driveway, she found him standing under her porch light, his hair sticking to his forehead as the rain fell against it. sighing, she got out of her car, the door slamming shut behind her as she stood there.

"chris."

"i miss you."

"no. you don't get to do this chris."

"listen please." he pleaded, watching as she looked up toward the sky for a moment, her eyes closed as her shoulders fell before looked back at him, nodding and crossing her arms.

"i know i fucked up. i made the wrong choice and put someone before you and i shouldn't have. i should've never gone for her. i had a good thing going and i completely fucked it up."

"chris you need to leave, please. i can't go through that kind of pain again."

"please give me one more chance. i'll do better."

"if i let myself forgive you, i won't be able to forgive myself. i will be subjecting myself to constantly worrying that i'll never be enough for you. i'll be walking on eggshells around you, scared to push you into the arms of another girl. i cannot put myself through that again. when i found out you cheated on me, it stripped me of everything i knew. i lost my sense of stability and sense of who i was. i became someone i didn't know, i was fucking destroyed chris. so no, i cannot let you back into my life because i would be betraying the promise i made myself."

Every summer, Jennifer throws a pool party while they’re away.

You’re supposed to be at her place at 10 AM to help her prep the space, but having stayed up late the night before, the annoying sound of the alarm does little to wake you up in the morning, Oliver doing so, instead.

You step into Jen’s patio exactly two hours later. She clicks her tongue at you, as if saying: “Finally!”.

Through the dark lenses of your sunglasses, you glance at her body as she approaches. The beautiful baby blue bikini she’s wearing fits her like a glove, as if it had been tailored with her in mind.

You’re used to feeling insecure whenever you’re around Jen. You know you shouldn’t, but you do.

It’s been this way since middle school, when one day the boys in your class rated the girls’ bodies from 1 to 10 on a piece of paper. You came second to last, while Jen’s name sat comfortably in first place.

“I know, I know.” You let out a sigh, allowing Jen to give you a tight hug. “I’m sorry.”

Johnny and Sooyoung wave at you from inside the pool and you wave back, walking to where the rest of your friends are. Wendy, who was sunbathing, sits beside you under the parasol. Victoria gets out of the pool and joins the group soon after.

Once settled on the lounger, you scan the space. Ten and Lucas are sitting on the edge of the pool with sunglasses on, swinging their legs in the water, immersed in what seems an intense conversation. Sooyoung and Johnny splash around as they try to drown each other, much to Yuta’s annoyance, who finds their game an obstacle to what he really wants: swim in peace.

Nothing seems out of the ordinary, but then, the switch in your mind flips: someone’s missing.

“Hey, where’s Chris?”

There’s a moment of silence where Wendy takes a sip of her lemonade, eye-siding Jen. “They argued yesterday.”

Your brunette friend looks away, missing your surprised expression. “Again?”

Chris’ parents are family friends, so you’ve known him for as far as you can remember. However, you had never interacted much until he became Jennifer’s first serious boyfriend.

Being an only child, Chris is expected to inherit his family’s wealth and business. If he’s famous for something, though, that’s his looks. You must admit he’s drop dead gorgeous. Of course, Jen wouldn’t settle for less.

Soon after they started dating, you realized that having a handsome partner had its drawbacks. Jennifer would whine in your group chat every week about how hard it was to stand girls checking him out, how some would go as far as to sneak papers with their phone numbers when she wasn’t looking.

Even if Chris politely rejected their approaches every time, Jennifer started to gradually get sick of the whole situation until, one day, it exploded.

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“He’s a Greek statue come to life, Jen, of course he will be hit on!” Wendy says. “You’ve got to learn to cope.”

Jen rolls her eyes at Wendy’s words, a sign she’s getting angry.

“On what side are you on, exactly?”

“We aren’t picking sides.” You try to mediate, making a gesture to your blonde friend, asking for her sun cream. Having prepared your bag in a rush, you must’ve left yours at home. “I know it’s hard to watch people flirt with him all the time. But Wendy has a point, too. Being good-looking isn’t his fault, you know?”

You end your statement with a glance in Victoria’s direction, but the girl doesn’t say a word. She’s the type to not participate in debates like this.

“Exactly!” Wendy agrees, pointing at you. “Besides, he always rejects those advances. He would never hurt your feelings on purpose, Jen. He’s literally the sweetest boy I’ve ever met.”

“Talking about me, I see.”

You turn around to find Yuta standing behind you, soaked from head to toe. A water drop on the tip of his hair falls on his shoulder and you follow it as it slides down his chest and reaches his happy trail.

You fan yourself. Good thing it’s hot today. Otherwise, what would you blame the fire in your belly on? 

Jen chuckles as Yuta sits next to her, seeking protection from the aggressive sun. “Humble as always.”

“I thought I was the nicest boy you’ve ever met.” He shoves her with his shoulder, smiling. You’ve got the urge to look away. The fire in your belly is quickly replaced by an unsettling feeling you’re familiar with.

“After Chris.” Victoria finally speaks. “If that makes you feel better.”

“Not really, but I’ll get over it.” Yuta shrugs. “How come you’re still dry? It’s a pool party, ladies, come on!”

All your friends stand up, encouraged by his words and the terrible heat, and start walking to the pool. Except you. When Yuta notices, he gestures to you to join them.

“I’m not done.” You say, shaking the suncream bottle in the air.

“I’ll wait for you, then.”

“It’s fine.” He sits exactly where he was a few seconds ago. “Just go with the others.”

“Some more time in the shade never hurts.”

“So that’s why you’re here.” You find it hard to hide the disappointment in your tone. “You’ve fooled me. I thought you were a gentleman.”

Yuta leans back, his abs flexing as he speaks. He’s got such a tiny waist, adorned by a tattoo of a butterfly. You wonder if it carries any meaning.

“Oh, but I am.”

“I don’t believe it.” You finish extending the cream on your left arm. “You’ve hung around Ten for too long.”

“Other people’s personalities don’t change mine. I’m not Lucas.”

“Hey, don’t be mean to him.” You’re aware of the bad reputation that precedes Lucas. A drunk heart-to-heart conversation that happened before you went abroad helped you realize Lucas uses his behavior as a mask to hide his numerous insecurities. In a way, you can relate to that. Besides, being the youngest of five successful siblings makes him subject to his parents’ expectations, which tend to be unrealistic. And his brothers, far from supportive, are entitled assholes, straight-up bullies. No wonder he feels he has to act all tough to be taken seriously. “He’s a good kid.”

“Sorry, are we talking about the same person?” You’re about to defend Lucas again, but upon watching you struggle to apply the cream on your back, Yuta interrupts you before you can talk. “Do you need a hand?”

“No, it’s fine. I don’t think I’ll get sunburnt there, anyway.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

Yuta grabs the bottle and sits right behind you, deaf to your words. At his insistence, you reach for your hair with trembling hands. Before you can even move it aside, he does so, his fingers brushing your back in the process.

You hold your breath at the sound of the cream coming out of the bottle. And then, his hands are on you.

You think your heart will jump out of your mouth and start running around the patio.

His warm palms delicately rub the cream into your skin, and you hope he doesn’t notice the goosebumps that bloom when he reaches the small of your back.

God, you’re so touch-starved it’s embarrassing.

You wonder if you’re tripping when Yuta takes a little longer to massage your shoulders. Trying to focus on anything else, your eyes land on Jen, who has joined Lucas and Ten by the edge of the pool. The bikini lets her flat stomach on display. Unconsciously, you suck in yours. She places her hair behind her shoulders as she laughs at something that Ten says.

Even her laugh sounds beautiful, everything about her is!

That must be why Yuta likes her so much.

You stand up, getting as far away from his hands as possible.

“I think that will do.” You say, eyes fixed on the floor, aware of how much you’ve just embarrassed yourself. “Thank you.”

“Sure thing.” His tone remains normal, but if you had looked at him, you would’ve seen him frown at the sudden mood change. Yuta leaves the bottle on the chair and follows you to the pool.

“About time you stopped playing handsies back there.”

You simply lift your middle finger at Ten, quickly making your way towards the staircase, hoping the water will hide your body from the rest.

It’s close to midnight and you’re on the verge of begging your parents to leave.

You’re celebrating the promotion of someone you don’t even know; drinking alcohol-free champagne, which you don’t even like that much; and bored Robinson Crusoe level.

Oliver and Noa left the moment they found their friends. Oli had invited you to join them, but you kindly refused, knowing that you would feel like a babysitter around his friends.

So, here you are, glued to your parents’ side, forced to listen to important conversations with important people, interested in neither.

Why have you been forced to come if your presence isn’t even going to be acknowledged? Your dad said it would be rude not to attend after a year abroad. What you understood was that they wanted to show you off, and the party seemed to be the perfect occasion.

You gulp the remains of your drink and leave the empty glass on the nearer table. You open your mouth, about to ask when you will be heading out when your dad’s name comes from the crowd.

“Jonathan!” He exclaims in surprise, shaking the hand of the man that appears in front of him. “Natalie! I didn’t know you were coming.”

“Well, we didn’t know you were coming!” Natalie, or what you call her out of respect, Mrs. Fulger, kisses your mother’s cheeks before addressing you. “You’re back from your trip! How was it, darling?”

You deliver a polite smile to the Fulgers, saying how the trip was “absolutely fantastic” and “a truly enriching experience.”

“You must be proud of her.” Mr. Fulger tells your parents, placing his big hand on his son’s shoulder. “Chris will take a gap year after graduating. One last taste of freedom before joining the company.”

The Fulger marriage laughs and your parents join them, and in less than a minute you’re back to being ignored, business taking over the conversation. You awkwardly stand beside your mom until you decide it’s enough.

“I’ll get something to drink.” You excuse yourself. “I’ll be back.”

“Chris will be enchanted to go with you.”

His father pushes him forward slightly. Chris gives you his signature charming smile before saying: “Of course.”

You make your way towards the bar immersed in an awkward silence. Of all people, you had to bump into him.

“Are you liking this party so far?” 

“I’m bored to death.”

“Me too.” You tap the bar counter with your long nails, laughing at his honest answer. “How’s life going?”

“Good, it’s good.” He looks around, playing with the glass he’s holding. “I’m in the training process to start working in my father’s company. He wants me to get familiar with the business and its processes before stepping in.”

There’s nothing worse than inheriting a position in a family business, but that’s just your opinion.

“You must be excited.”

“I am, yeah.” Chris nods, taking a sip of his drink. Even if you’re both trying hard to ignore the elephant in the room, Chris gives in first. “Have you talked to Jennifer, by the way?”

“She’s my best friend, Chris.”

He gives you a half-smile, only realizing now how stupid his question must’ve sounded.

“She won’t return my calls or my texts. She has blocked me on every social media, she doesn’t even want to see me! I don’t know where we stand right now.”

You’re not sure of what to answer, afraid you may say the wrong thing. One thing you know, though, is that even if you’ll always be loyal to Jen, you must admit she’s handling this whole thing terribly wrong.

“I’m sure it sucks.”

Chris genuinely laughs for the first time tonight.

“Yeah, a little.” You laugh at his irony-filled tone, too, and the atmosphere feels much lighter now. “Relationships are so fucking complicated. Don’t ever get into one.”

“I’ll be fine.” You say, taking a sip of the drink the waiter has just served you. “It’s not like there’s a long line of men dying to date me.”

“Now, that’s surprising.” 

Much to your delight, he’s too invested in his problem to notice how the blood has rushed to your cheeks.

A certain someone comes to your mind and with him a question you’re dying to ask.

“Please, don’t take this the wrong way.” Chris straightens his back, shoving a hand into the pocket of his suit pants, nodding. “Have you and Jen argued due to a… third person?”

It’s just like when people yell at a character to not go into the room where the killer awaits. But it’s just you in the cinema, screaming at yourself to stop talking.

“Of course not! What the fuck?” Chris’ blue eyes open wide in shock as he reaches for his phone. “Did she tell you that? Does she think I’m cheating?”

“No, Chris.” You place a hand on his arm in an attempt to stop him from texting Jen, who will murder you if she finds out you have planted a new suspicion in Chris’ mind. “God, I’m so stupid, I’m sorry. It was just a question! I swear-”

“Hey.”

You aren’t sure if you should celebrate or bury a hole in the floor and hide when Yuta appears out of thin air, his eyes falling on Chris’ arm, where your hand is. You quickly move it away, which is exactly what is needed to make everything look suspicious.

“Hi.” Chris greets, not interested in Yuta’s presence at all. His head is elsewhere now that you’ve completely fucked up. “I’m leaving, I need to call her.”

Chris disappears in the crowd before you have the chance to say goodbye, leaving you behind with Yuta, who raises an eyebrow at you.

“Um, what was that?”

Whatever he’s insinuating offends you terribly. Do you look like the type to steal your best friends’ guys?

“That was nothing.” You snap. “He’s Jen’s boyfriend.”

“Ex-boyfriend.”

“It’s a rough patch, they’ll end up getting back together.”

“Hopefully, they won't.” Your heart drops at his remark, but Yuta’s too busy looking in the direction Chris has disappeared, resting an elbow on the bar. “I hate that guy.”

Chris has always seemed kind and very down to earth. You wonder what could he have possibly done to gain Yuta’s resentment. To that question, you’ve got a theory. And you’d hate being right.

“I think he’s nice.”

“Oh, you think he’s nice?” Yuta snorts at your words. “You don’t know him that well at all, then.”

Yuta glances around the room, which allows you to scan him for a while. He looks really handsome in a suit. He reminds you of those vintage Hollywood stars.

“Why do you hate Chris? Is it because you like Jennifer?”

The question shocks you both. Again, you’re alone in the cinema begging yourself to just shut the fuck up.

“What?” He lets out a laugh of disbelief. “What does Jen have to do with anything?”

“I don’t know...”

“Oh, you do know. What have you seen that made you think that?”

Congratulations! You’ve just dug your own grave.

“Nothing in particular.” You answer, shrugging. “You seem to get along really well, now you hate her boyfriend...”

“First of all, I don’t like Chris because he’s a racist piece of shit. And I get along really well with Johnny, too. Do you think I want to fuck him, too?”

You can feel the color draining from your face.

“I don’t know what you like.”

If there’s something you’ve learned about Yuta, it’s that he’s the straightforward type. He’s unbothered and an expert when it comes to turning around the conversation to make it beneficial for him. He’s something like a mastermind, you’d say.

“Do you like me?”

“What?!” You shriek, trying to hide your shaky voice with a laugh. “Absolutely not.”

“Why then would you ask me about Jen?” Yuta presses, tilting his head to the side. “Are you jealous?”

“I’m not! I was just curious!”

“You’re full of shit.” You’d be lying if you said you don’t find his smirk insanely attractive. “Just so you know, I wouldn’t mind. I would be very glad, actually.”

It’s at this point that your head starts spinning.

You see, you have never been confident. Out of the friend group, you’ve always been the shiest one. You don’t smile in pictures because you think your smile is ugly, and you don’t wear tight clothes because you hate your body.

You have had a single relationship in your life, at sixteen, and it crushed your self-esteem even further. A promise to yourself was made after that: no one would put you through that hell again.

Is that what Yuta is playing at? Making you believe he likes you just to laugh in your face once you take the bait?

He had seemed genuine when he defended you the night you met. Had it just been to give a good first impression?

You hold your purse tight, hold your head high.

“I hope the rest of your night goes well, Yuta.”

And you walk away with your dignity intact.

X-Playing Cards and Cartomancy

High Card takes a lot of ~stylistic inspiration~ for its X-playing cards system from the standard 52-card deck and related card games, but it never occurred to me until someone pointed it out that the French deck was also based on tarot cards, precisely the minor arcana! (media usually make parallels from the major arcana so it took me longer to connect the dots)

More elaborate explanation under the cut...

1. The abilities and meaning of each suit

To be frank this one is obvious enough from the beginning, both the standard deck and minor arcana have 4 suits, and each suit (hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs) symbolizes emotions, wealth, creativity, and will, in that order! I think the description of each suit’s abilities fits quite well with its original symbolism.

It’s also interesting to note that the spades is associated with military/nobility. I can see that with Wendy, given that her father owns a dojo, but Finn...? Yeah, so I guess we know what’s coming.

2. Correlation between the five main characters and the interpretation of their respective card in minor arcana

Note that I’ve never dabbled in tarot reading before (I know someone who does, but asking them a favor especially for cracking anime lore is embarrassing, so no), and this is all based on a quick Wikipedia search, please bear with me.

I see a lot of... similarities, but you decide.

2 of Swords/2 of Spades (Finn): Intuition, balance, calmness, it’s also related to the justice and judgement card of major arcana (making moral decisions, essentially carries the same meaning). In general, 2 in tarot represents opposing forces, seeking balance and peace of mind, then moving forward from an inner struggle once they find it.

5 of Cups/5 of Hearts (Chris): Grief over past events, inability to see the bright side in any situation. 5 card symbolizes tragedy in all suits... it either means loss, defeat, or betrayal, but the meaning is somewhat brighter when reversed, and I think it’s the only card to do so? Tarot cards generally have better outcome when upright. Its major arcana counterpart, the hierophant, can represent a role model.

7 of Pentacles/7 of Diamonds (Leo): Success, commitment towards work. In reverse position it also means bad investment haha. 7 in general represents not only determination and self confidence, but also overcoming challenges in the “survival of the fittest” sense.

1 of Swords/Ace of Spades (Wendy): Conquest, triumph, a great force in everything, so it can either mean victory or disaster. In tarot 1 symbolizes beginnings, potential, and early stages of endeavor. I like the sound of that!

3 of Wands/3 of Clubs (Vijay): Achievement, optimism, fresh start, partnerships. It’s a calm card? 3 in general represents communication and interaction, also influence over partners in friendships and work. It can mean facilitating creation, growth, development, and growth as well.

3. Original design of each suit’s King card

Okay so this one is one of the less important details but it’s just too interesting to pass up. Apparently the visual interpretation of the Kings is like this:

I just want to appreciate Ebimo aka HC character designer, it seems that she really did her research right lmao.

Another interesting point is the King of Hearts is sometimes called the “suicide king” because he appears to be “stabbing his own head” in his card due to mass production error, but it’s hilarious to me.

4. Correlations with the major arcana?

The 52-card deck we have right now have nothing to do with the major arcana, but we can still draw lines between some of the cards and figures in the Fourland folktale?

The Magician card, for example, fits right with the role of the Mage from whom X-playing cards’ abilities originate. The Magician represents manifestation of desire and one’s potentials, and the card illustration itself show all four of the suits symbols (cup, sword, coins, club). Meanwhile, there is also The Fool card, sometimes called to be the Joker of tarot, as it can be the highest or lowest trump. The Fool represents a “protagonist” or just “humankind itself”, which I think fits right with the role of the boy-king.

Rewriting "High Card" (Season 1)

This is the first anime I've rewritten episode for episode--and this is mainly because it's only two short seasons. I actually really enjoyed this series, and it's one of the few original animes I've watched (and a bright side after being heavily disappointed by "Bucchigiri?!"), but since I'm in the business of doing rewrites now, I decided to fix some story issues I found with this show (mainly character-related), though I wanted to wait until finishing season 2 to make sure my criticisms would be alleviated. Since there isn't too much I dislike, there won't be too much to change, though I wrote this mostly for myself. Here's hoping for a 3rd season!

One Shot--One of the good/bad things about this show is that they pretty much dive right into the action. It's good since it gets your attention, but leaves something to be desired for the story. For this episode, I'd want to give more attention to Finn's time in the orphanage (the whole reason he's a pickpocket, yet his time there is barely covered).

2. Make a Choice--Mostly the same, but again giving more information on Finn's time at the orphanage, as well as seeing him interact with the people there (especially Lindsey). I'd also alter the ages a bit so they feel closer. In the series, Vijay is 26, Wendy is 21, Chris is 20, and Finn is 17. I'd probably make them all in their early 20s (Vijay being older felt like it took him out of the spotlight, and I felt like it fit Finn better to be older). I'd also alter Chris' personality a bit; in the anime, his charming personality is often framed as disingenuous to hide his selfish nature underneath due to his own trauma. I like the idea that his flirtiness and charismatic attitude isn't false bravado, and that's just who he is, along with being contemplative and serious when the time calls for it. The origins of Fourland are also explained here instead of in episode 6.

3. Crazy Rich--Leo is also aged up to around the same age as the other High Card youths, with it being stated that he and Vijay are childhood friends (in contrast to the original, where they have a 12 year age gap and Vijay is seen raising him; this is mainly because Vijay gets such little focus and I never understood why he'd be looking after Leo at such a young age). I'd also want a bit more focus on Leo's backstory and his relationship with his father, Owen, and Bernard. I'd also set the scene for Theodore and Ban's relationship as well as hints at Ban's main goal (which the anime waited until the end to address, and it didn't really go anywhere).

4. Samurai Girl--A bit more of Wendy's past is dived into rather than a short backstory, and 'd make it so that Vijay is the one to disarm Love-P rather than Finn (given that I want other characters to get a chance to shine outside of Chris and Finn). Chris is unavailable to be in the fight at that time because he got an emergency call from Michel, who just wanted to see him, and she tells him that she's being discharged from the hospital soon. Apple also becomes Finn's first friend unrelated to High Card and the orphanage.

5. Power Game--Sugar catches on a bit quicker to the events of what's going on in the country, as well as being more sly and tactful rather than just headstrong. She also goes on leave after the death of John Doe. We also hear about how Ban's father died and his hints at wanting to get him back at any cost. Vijay, Bernard, and Leo also explain the power of X-hands and how they come at a great cost, explaining how Ban attempted to use it years ago to reverse time to save his father, but Theodore prevented it, and that his aim is to use an X-hand to travel back in time and save him. However, they suspect another goal in mind as well. More info on the royal family is also highlighted, particularly how Noah hired Ban to kill his brothers so he could be king (kinda feel like the show buried the lead with that).

6. Take Back Five--Vijay gets more of the focus here, being the one to orchestrate the acquisition of the 5 of Diamonds. Apple is there as well, and shows an unusual desire to obtain the card, despite Finn never revealing to him it's nature. I'd like to think Bernard also is present for this, though Leo is mixed about this, feeling mixed about it, not wanting his father to distrust him, but also wanting to make him proud. It's also implied that Finn knew that Chris switched out the 5 of Diamonds dueling the auction, but he believes that Chris turned it in to HC, so he didn't confront him about it.

7. Love and Fake--It is confirmed that Chris is bisexual--not for fanservice reasons (even though I am a Chris/Finn shipper), but he says in season two after rescuing Finn "I'm into holding men, too," and I feel like it'd come up while he and Finn are conjoined. It's also revealed that Chris had been trying to woo Chelsea for a short while in order to get her card, but while she was catching feelings, she saw through his flirting, since it's robotic as he does it with many women. While conjoined, we see flashbacks of Chris and Finn's lives (particularly about their parents), as well as Chris deciding to be a bit more contemplative about him playing with others' feelings, even if it's for the greater good. The episode plays out mostly the same, save for Chris asking Chelsea out for a date on his next day off (I'm a Chris/Chelsea shipper, as you can see), but to everyone's surprise, Leo has hired her as a member of High Card, using her social media presence to promote the company.

8. Heat Up--Up to this point, Finn has been making periodic visits to the orphanage and helping Lindsey cover the payments, and brings Chelsea and Wendy (the only members of HC available) as well as Apple to come with him for Lindsey's birthday. Lindsey still turns down his offer to get more money to help keep the orphanage open, and Finn also notes how Lindsey reminds him of someone he used to know, though Lindsey doesn't press him on it, knowing that his past is painful to recall. Chris also doesn't refer to himself as brother to Finn (this would be to maintain the fanservice). Most of the episode plays out the same, though Apple has a breakdown when he thinks Finn died.

9. By Your Side--Chelsea and Chris visit Finn, revealing that when Chelsea joins two people, she also develops a connection with them, able to read their emotions, and sometimes their thoughts, allowing her to convey to Chris Finn's pain. Most of the episode plays out the same, though the episode ends with Chelsea coming to a realization, and she rushes to find Michel, who's escaped the hospital again, as well as Finn noting that he needs to check on Apple after his mission is over.

10. To Be Apart--Given that Chris' backstory is already explored prior, the episode focuses more on Ban's motives (before this, we'd just heard it explained rather than see it) and how Theodore's adherence to the rules only became stronger with time. I'd also say that Arya was fired from HC rather than simply leaving, since helping Tyler breaks a significant rule. The other members of HC aren't put on standby, so Vijay and Wendy rescue Chris, and Chris quickly disappears after getting Alex's card. Finn gets a call from Leo, who tells him that Chelsea informed him that Chris is looking for Michel in order to heal her with an X-hand. Finn subsequently passes out from his injuries rather than Chris shooting him.

11. Chris--Most of the episode's the same, except everyone already knows Chris' motives, and Chelsea manages to find Michel at the carnival just as Chris does. Lindsey returns Chris' money to Finn, but it motivates Finn to work harder to save the orphanage even more, and we get a glimpse of Finn's brother, who up to this point he had forgotten, which pushes him to protect Lindsey, the orphanage, and High Card (Chris included).

12. Finn--The royal family is still defended by HC, but Finn immediately goes after Chris rather than being knocked out and hospitalized. Tilt stops him, taking from some of season 2 and revealing that he's Finn's brother, and doesn't want to hurt him, but has sympathy for Chris, which is why he joined Ban, who also has something he wants to get back. Chelsea is also never injured and uses her telepathy to distract Chris in order for Finn to shoot one of the cards out of his hands. In the end, Chris is fired from High Card (considering he did something that is completely against the rules), though he still needs money in order to support himself and Michel, and Ban offers him a place with the Klondike family. He doesn't have to do any of the extreme dirty work, but he would have to go against his former friends. Chris agrees for a couple reasons: to support himself and Michel, out of sympathy for Ban, and because he believes High Card will eventually beat the Klondike family.
