Hey bubs! What about maybe a chris evans x wife!reader (or gf!reader, you can pick) where it's winter (maybe close to Christmas?) and snowing in Boston and Chris and Reader go for a walk and get hot chocolate and kiss out in the snow and it's just really fluffy and they come home and cuddle to warm back up?
Either way, I love you and your writing so much and there's absolutely no pressure to write this at all

2023 in Movies, My Autumn/Winter Top Ten Runners-Up Rundown
20. FERRARI – returning after almost eight years in the cinematic wilderness (outside of producing credits and ushering in TV like Tokyo Vice, anyway), director Michael Mann definitely seems to be back with a bang with this opulent, intense and emotionally charged biopic telling the story of automotive pioneer Enzo Ferrari’s 1957 battle to claw his company out of the looming pit of bankruptcy while beset by the crippling recent loss of his son Dino and his tempestuous relationship with his wife and business partner Laura (Penelope Cruz).
19. SAW X – after years of wallowing in the frustrating mires of diminishing levels of quality, Leigh Whannel’s twisted but sometimes downright BRILLIANT slasher horror franchise has FINALLY got itself back on track with this intriguing (sort of) prequel directed by long-serving series alumnus Kevin Greutert, which see the socially-conscious serial killer with a very specific CAUSE, master trap engineer John Kramer (the always awesome Tobin Bell), go off proper biblical on a gang of con artists who have NO IDEA who they just tried to take advantage of while he struggles with his encroaching terminal cancer …
18. THE HOLDOVERS – despite trying to play itself off as an old school throwback, Sideways director Alexander Payne’s latest top-notch comedy drama feels wonderfully fresh and DEFINITELY relevant, especially since I was finally able to check it out in the middle of the Festive period of 2023. Paul Giamatti delivers a career best turn as Paul Hunham, a curmudgeonly classics teacher at an elite boarding Academy in the 1970s who ends up the designated staff member overseeing the handful of misanthropic teenage students who find themselves trapped on campus over the Christmas break with nowhere to go.
17. WISH – so, does this do a good enough job of marking 100 years of Disney animated features? I dunno … but it IS a fun movie all the same, a typically spellbinding piece of work from a studio who’ve long since proved they can pull off this kind of movie-making in their sleep. A big part of the charm in this musical fantasy adventure is Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Schmigadoon!) as wilful, imaginative peasant girl Asha and her complicated struggle with Chris Pine as King Magnifico, the powerful wizard who wants to exploit the magical sentient star she just wished upon for his own nefarious ends …
16. NAPOLEON – Ridley Scott’s long awaited return to epic historical cinema may not be QUITE the comeback masterpiece we’ve been hoping for, but there’s no denying this is still a very impressive piece of work and a MASSIVE filmmaking achievement in an artform which is in imminent danger of dying out in the current market. Joaquin Phoenix clearly really relished his opportunity to reteam with Scott after Gladiator, letting rip with gusto as the complicated French general and tyrant whose story is told here less through the course of his many impressive but bloody victories than his tumultuous relationship with his beloved Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).
15. MY ANIMAL – sneaking in under the radar to capture my attention entirely by chance, this enjoyably offbeat, erotically charged coming-of-age werewolf horror indie from debuting director Jacqueline Castel tells an intriguingly POTENT tale of dangerous forbidden passions and burgeoning sexual self-discovery as teenage Canadian lycanthrope Heather (I Love Dick’s Bobbi Salvor Menuez) falls desperately in love with Johny (The Hunger Games and The Hate U Give’s Amandla Stenberg), a new arrival in her snowbound early 80s mountain town.
14. SITTING IN BARS WITH CAKE – another one which largely snuck in under the radar, this time onto Amazon Prime, an irrepressibly adorable romantic comedy drama from director Trish Sie (Pitch Perfect 3) which largely avoids the usual pitfalls that tend to turn me off about these kinds of movies by instead ultimately being about the unstoppable power of FRIENDSHIP as cripplingly shy LA girl Jane (The Sun Is Also a Star’s Yara Shahidi) uses freshly baked cakes as an ice breaker at the urging of her extroverted best friend Corinne (Hellraiser 2022’s Odessa A'zion) as a means to boost her self-confidence.
13. SUZUME – once again Disney gets eclipsed by an anime, it would seem … yeah, the latest offering from whimsical master writer-director Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering With You) is another absolute WINNER, following the misadventures of Kyushu highschooler Iwato Suzume as she accidentally unleashes an ancient, potentially massive destructive force intent on opening hidden dimensional doors all over Japan which would spell immense cataclysmic chaos if she doesn’t find a way to stop it.
12. REBEL MOON, PART ONE: A CHILD OF FIRE – okay, so here we go … yeah, this is gonna be a TRICKY one, since I KNOW that we’re only really getting HALF the movie here, with the as yet unreleased Director’s Cut of the first part of Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi extravaganza for Netflix promising to be the much more complete package, and I can definitely see how that could to be a potential MASTERPIECE. So while this is notable for the fact that this will probably be the very first movie to place in TWO YEARS of my rundowns, this is ultimately just a placeholder. But it definitely deserved it, so I couldn’t NOT. Please don’t AT ME, guys, this should hopefully all get cleared up in 2024 …
11. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON – while Martin Scorsese’s latest super-long epic historical biopic just isn’t the undeniable stone-cold MASTERPIECE that 2019’s The Irishman was, this adaptation of David Grann’s potent novel retelling the dark and bloody tale of the Osage Indian Murders is still a proper belter from one of the greatest filmmakers around. Leonardo Dicaprio plays things a lot darker than usual as Ernest Burkhart, the money-grubbing husband out to exploit the fortune of his unwitting Native American wife Mollie (Certain Women’s Lily Gladstone, a revelation here) at the behest of his monstrous crime boss uncle William King Hale (Robert De Niro).

Together - Chris x MC (Ariana) AU
Masterlist
Note: This is day five of the Christmas prompts HERE. Today’s prompt is “Cuddling by the fire”. The posting goes for 12 days, and starts on the 13th of December. (Day 5)
Pairing: Chris x MC
Rating: G/T I’m horrible at ratings and it also depends on the chapter
Summery: Chris finally finds out about AJ’s engagement, but he doesn’t really act happy about it. Things turn around for him however at the end of the night.
On the way to Nick and AJs’ apartment, Ariana put in her favourite Christmas CD.
“Ariana, I love you and all, but this is the last time we are listening to this EP. It’s so annoying.” Ariana huffed. “You’re so mean. I enjoy the art of Christmas music.” “So do I babe, but I hate listening to Justin Bieber on repeat. It was annoying the first time, it’s still annoying the tenth time.” Ariana rolled her eyes. “Fine.” She said it sharper than she intended to. She saw Chris stiffen at the sharpness to her tone.
She reached over and put her hand on top of his which was on the gear shift. “I’m sorry my love. I’ve been so stressed and tired. It must be a Christmas thing.” Chris agreed.
“Well, we’re here. AJ and Nick’s apartment. I’m sure AJ will enjoy the cookies you made.” Ariana nodded eagerly. “Yes, and so will Nick.” Chris chuckled. “Shall we go in?” “Chris, before we go, you need to be ready.” Chris looked at her confused. “Ready for?” Ariana shook her head. “Nothing, just in case they say something. You always need to be ready for everything right?” “You’re crazy.” “But you obviously love crazy, because if you married me.” She grinned at him. “I love crazy.” He smiled at her warmly and then looked down at their entwined hands, then back at her, but instead in her eyes. “In other words, I love you.” She smiled at him then leaned in.
The were shortly interrupted by the calling of AJ. “GET A ROOM GUYS. NO MATTER HOW OLD I AM, I’M STILL YOUR LITTLE SISTER CHRIS!” Chris smiled sheepishly.
They got out of the car. Ariana had convinced Chris to hold the cookies so he did just that.
She ran up to AJ and hugged her. “I made you cookies. Cinnamon because I know you don’t like sweet.” She smiled at her, while AJ took the cookies from Chris’ hands. “Thanks Ariana.”
The went inside and AJ gave them a tour of their small apartment.
“Okay, this is the master bedroom, our bathroom, our kitchen and our lounge.” She smiled at them. “What do you think Chris?” Chris looked at his sister, a smile creeping in. “I think that this place is big enough to have two rooms instead of one.” Ariana elbowed him in the side. “Chris!” She hissed. AJ laughed. “Oh don’t worry Ariana. That’s exactly what my mom said when she came by.” AJ rolled her eyes as she led Chris and Ariana to the couches.
After tea, AJ and Nick went to their bedroom to discus how they would approach Chris about their engagement.
“So my love, what do you think of all this?” Chris smiled at her. “This brings back memories of Junior and Senior year. This looks like the old apartment we bought together.” Ariana smiled at the memory.
Just then AJ popped out with Nick behind her.
“So Chris, we need to tell you something.” AJ shifted on her feet. Chris’ expression turned unreadable as his eyes wondered down to their joined hands. “Dear God, please don’t tell me that your pregnant AJ.” Ariana laughed but Chris didn’t dare look at her.
“WHAT? No Christopher. I’m not pregnant. At least, I hope I’m not.” She batted her eyelashes. “Jo-Anne Powell. I do not need to know what you and Nick do and I do not want mental images either.” Ariana rubbed Chris’ back and willed his face to look at her. “Chris honey, I know what they’re gonna say but you need to calm down.” She nodded at him, and he took a few deep breaths.
“Okay Chris, Nick and I, well, heh, umm, we’re engaged?” Chris stared at them blankly. “Chris?” Ariana’s face turned worried.
“I need air okay?” Ariana stood up behind him. “Alone.” His tone was sharp like a blade. He walked out, leaving the room in silence.
“He’s fine. He just needs some time.” AJ sat down. “I really didn’t want to disappoint Chris.” She started to tear up. “Baby.” Nick embraced her warmly. “I’m sorry. I’ll call you later AJ. I need to talk to Chris.”
Ariana dashed out the door to find Chris, but he wasn’t outside the door like she thought he was. A storm was brewing and she lost phone connection, so she wandered around to find him.
“CHRIS?” She looked frantically for him for about forty minutes. She started to feel light headed for he didn’t have enough layers on for the wind that was picking up in speed and whipping her with snow. “Chris, please?” Her voices started to fade towards the end.
She fell into the snow with her back resting on a tree trunk. She had forgotten her mittens and her hands became numb.
She couldn’t feel her fingers, toes, ears, nothing. And sleep descended on her.
A while later she woke up with a warmness filling her. Her eyes barely open, she made out that there was a flame in front of her, a blanket around her, the feeling of warm clothes, and the feeling of a furnace next to her. That could only be one person; Chris.
She snuggled closer to him and he rubbed her back.
“I’m sorry baby. I didn’t mean to leave you out there.” She looked up at his face and he looked worried, frightened, and angry.
“Why are you angry?” He unclenched his jaw. “I’m not angry at you if that’s what you’re asking.” She let go of a breath. “T-then who are you angry at? AJ? Nick?” Chris laughed sarcastically which made her flinch. “I’m not angry at AJ or Nick Ariana. I’m mad at myself. I could’ve killed you. I put you in a position that made you put yourself in danger. I-if something bad happened to you.” He trailed of, tears forming in his eyes as his face softened.
She cupped his face. “Chris, no, no.” She shook her head, “I put myself in danger. I should’ve gone back when I realised how bad the storm was getting, but I didn’t.” A tear escaped Chris. “It’s all my fault. I don’t deserve you. I never have, and I obviously never will” He mumbled. She smiled sadly at him.
“Chris?” “Hmm?” She sat up and looked at him, dead in the eye. “Remember what we said in our vows?” Chris looked away from her, but she forced him to look at her again.
“Always and forever. No matter what. I love you, you love me. We wanted to be together for the rest of our lives. We wanted to start a family together, buy a house and turn it into a home together, buy a pet together.” He smiled at her sadly. “Look at me, we have done so much together in so little time. And even after all this time Chris, I have never ever fallen out of love with you. No, instead everyday of our lives together, I fall deeper in love with you.” She captured his lips with hers and kissed him passionately.
After five minutes of intense making out, Chris picked her up and moved her to the bed. “You know, we’ve done two out of the three things that you mentioned.” Ariana looked up at him questionably. “We’ve bought a house and turned it into a home, we bought a pet that we both adore. The only thing we haven’t done it started a family together.”
Ariana sat up from her lying position. “This wasn’t how I wanted to tell you Chris.” He sat up and looked at her. “AJ is pregnant?” She laughed and smiled at him sweetly. “No, not AJ, but...” “But?” He looked at her eagerly. “But, I am.” “You-you’re pregnant?” His eyes lit up as she nodded her head. He picked her up and spun her around.
“Chris, put me down please? I’m still light headed and I’m starting to feel nauseous.” She giggled as he put her down with a apologetic look. “We-we’re gonna be a family?” She giggled again at his happiness and nodded.
“I love you so much Ariana.” She looked at him and smiled at him again. “I love you too.” He knelt down and lifted up her shirt and Ariana blushed. “ And I love you!” She giggled. “I’m sorry that I was trouble today. I scared you and I shouldn’t have.” Chris stood up and cupped her face. She was tearing up. “Trouble? Yes you scared me, but I scared you too. Maybe we always do, do things together. Including scaring each other.” He wiped away the fallen tear, and kissed her.
“You know, every word you say makes me warmer than the fire right?” He chuckled. “No baby, let me show you how warm I can really make you.” He smirked as he laid her down on the bed once again, bubbling with joy.

don’t look up
first order of business on christmas day: watching the nihilistic satire that is don’t look up. I have not laughed like this in a year, it is utterly FABULOUS, doesn’t at all take itself seriously (and let me just tell you how pleased I am that they made the comet a rubble–pile in their models, they actually scienced the small details!)
highlights include:
AILF (astronomer I’d like to fuck)
jennifer lawrence, timothee chalamet and leo dicaprio walked into a (car)
jennifer lawrence is a “phd candidate” who looks like rooney mara from the girl with the dragon tattoo, timothee “you’ve got some church game” chalamet is an evangelical skateboarder, leo dicaprio is a scientist on the verge of a nervous breakdown with no science communication skills and the general scientist’s lot
the general scientist’s lot: panic attacks, crashing depressions, high blood pressure, restless leg, weight gain WHEN I TELL YOU I DIED
“the world is ending in 6 months and 14 days” followed by “can I meet your mother in 7 months?”
“michigan state? really? let’s get this information to the ivy leaguers... and cambridge”—did me in, because as per usual, nobody ever knows any other unis outside of the oxbridge and the american ones
leo dicaprio: such palpable on–screen anxiety that I felt it where I was sitting this poor dude
ariana “I have a tattoo of a shooting star” grande, going on instagram live saying “guyyyysss this comet stuff is really stressing me out” in the face of literal annihilation
nobody cares that the world is about to end, a solid third of the world is more concerned with ariana grande, another third thinks it’s a conspiracy theory, and the final third are capitalists who want to exploit the situation
the phones that autobuy ariana’s new song
“I’ve been thinking about the free snacks... why would they make us pay for free snacks?”— jennifer lawrence’s fixation on this with the looming extinction level asteroid incoming (and the commentary on the capitalism in general, where the only thing that trickles down is the mentality and not the goods)
ariana, the fucking SONG, the beautiful subtitles of “you’re about to die soon everybody [vocalising]”
“was this even peer reviewed?” WHEN I TELL YOU I DIED PT II
teddy “I just have more skin pigmentation than you, because your ancestors migrated to europe” oglethorpe getting arrested my poor bae
cate “my grandfather invented flash–freezing and I have four master’s degrees, know three languages and slept with two former presidents” blanchett
all the commentary on corporate capitalism: president meryl streep taking on a trump persona, in the pocket of billionaire not-elon with his company not-space-x, diverting the mission to blow up the asteroid because it’s chock full of PGEs and that’s trillions right there
america: the saviours of mankind (and virtually no mention of any other country; I think this was an intentional dig at all the american–oriented disaster movies)
the NEPOTISM: president meryl and her son jonah hill (who she later FORGETS, I—)
timothee chalamet introducing himself with “hi i’m firepuma162751585 on twitch, do you game?”
the conspiracy theories; “there is no comet” and the whole commentary on intentional ignorance of clear evidence, denial mentalities, sheer stupidity etc. with the “don’t look up”. fabulous
the tide-pod cinnamon blast off challenge
an american ‘hero’ on the mission to save the world, giving a speech live to said world about saving “all those beautiful white folk working hard at home”. same american shooting the comet with a gun going “YOU’LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE”.
the repeated “just a different generation” STILL DYING, I AM
the chris evans cameo and the goddamn movie poster, for camp sit on the fence (look up AND look down!)—they covered every camp, lemme tell you
surprisingly poignant dinner table scene at the end of the world. the cheery, trembling voices, the premature use of past tense while ignoring the shaking house, lauding the store–bought apple pie. fabulous acting
the billionaire ship at the ending, and the garden of eden vibes before prompt carnage via space dinosaurs
jonah hill, last man left alive
they did not hold back. the societal commentary was real, it was frighteningly realistic in some ways and hilariously fatalistic in other ways. it was depression with a side of hilarity come to life, and I loved it.
#don't look up#so on the nose but so good#but all of this is a big metaphor for global warming or COVID or whatever#mirror to society and the picture ain't pretty

Great American Family (formerly GAC)
⚠️ Want all to be aware there is more to Great American Family, née GAC, than G-rated Christmas movies. Though I’m including dates and details here in the spirit of being a completist, worth noting the funding and founding of this channel, which comes from the Donald Trump-aligned Hicks Equity Group, brings with it an explicit anti-diversity agenda, hiding under guise of harmless sounding words like “family-friendly” and “safe” programming. More detailed explanation here (bottom of page), and additional more recent thoughts, for those who want it. And if you’re looking for outside sources on GAF’s political affiliations and lack of inclusion, see these stories from The Daily Beast, Vulture, the L.A. Times and Bloomberg.
A Belgian Chocolate Christmas (holiday movie starring Jaclyn Hales and Zane Stephens; directed by Maximilian Elfeldt; written by Scott Adkins; A food stylist travels to Belgium for the holidays; filmed in L.A. and Brussels; originally announced as for 2022 by Great American Family, but pulled from their schedule for not meeting their “standards” ) - Jul. 8

What True Love Really Is - Chris x MC (Ariana) AU
Masterlist
Note: This is day seven of the Christmas prompts HERE. Today’s prompt is “Watching holiday specials on TV”. The posting goes for 12 days, and starts on the 13th of December. (Day 7)
Side note: I couldn’t help myself with the angst. This idea came into my head this morning as I was watching Home Alone 2 and it just linked with the prompt. However, it’s Christmas so I couldn’t end this on a bad note, and I needed some fluff, so I hope you enjoy this fluffy, angsty, fluffy fic. 💜 (This isn’t long, but I wanted to make it short and sweet so I didn’t get way to of topic.)
Pairing: Chris x MC
Rating: G/T I’m horrible at ratings and it also depends on the chapter
Summery: It’s the first day in a while that Chris and Ariana have alone together. Ariana tells Chris what’s on her mind while watching a holiday special.
“BABE! IT’S 8:00 AND HOME ALONE IS COMING ON NOW!” Ariana called to Chris who was upstairs.
He came running down and jumped on the couch, making it slide on the floor. “Chris! You’ll ruin the floor.” Chris shrugged and wrapped her up in a hug.
“Hey, hey, hey, mind the hot chocolate would ya?” He chuckled as he backed away. “Can I have some?” He asked with a teasing pout.
“Of course my love.” She smiled warmly at him and cupped his cheek, he leaned in but she pushed him back. “It’s on the kitchen bench top. There are small marshmallows next to it in a bowel as well. The whipped cream is in the fridge and the chocolate sauce is in the cupboard.” “You’re evil.” He said with a playful glare, while she gave him a smug smile as he got up.
The movie had just started as Chris sat down beside her.
Her hands were warm against her mug, and her and Chris were wearing matching Christmas onesies.
She snuggled against Chris and he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. He could tell that she was tired, and getting worn down easier and faster than usual.
She struggled to sleep at night, and had dark circles under her eyes everyday. Every time he asked her if she was okay, she would reassure him with her usual smile and a simple “yes”. Throughout it all though, he didn’t believe her. He knew she wasn’t okay. He knew that she wasn’t sleeping well, no matter how much she tried to cover it up with, “Yes, I had an amazing sleep.” and “I was just uncomfortable last night, that’s all.” But it always followed with a, “I promise, I’m okay.” He was so worried about her. She wasn’t telling him something. He just needed to figure out what it was.
She took popcorn from the table and carefully put it in her mouth, then his.
He needed to get closer to what she was afraid? of. What she was guilty? of.
“Do you still love me?” He asked, never truly knowing how scared he was to ask her that question until now. Her eyes locked onto his. “Did you cheat on me?” Ariana started laughing. “What the hell Chris? Of course I still love you. And no, I didn’t cheat on you idiot.” She said the second part flicking his head.
Her laughing died down and he felt secure again. He still wanted to know what it was that he didn’t know, and what it was he was doing wrong for/with her.
At the part of the movie when Kevin’s mom accidentally left him behind, Chris felt a sudden tremble beside him. He looked at Ariana and saw her crying.
He didn’t say anything, all he did was will her face towards him, and let her cry into his chest.
After her crying started to die down he took her face in his hands and made her look into his bright blue eyes, that were filled with worry.
“What happened baby?” She sniffled before pressing her cheek on his shoulder, refusing to look at him. After a few minutes of silence, she finally spoke. “I-it’s nothing. Just forget it.” She slowly started to move, but Chris quickly grabbed her and placed her in his lap. “Don’t do that Ariana. Don’t push me away.” He said shaking his head.
She took a deep shaky breath in, then slowly let it go through her mouth.
“I’m scared Chris.” Her eyes filling with tears again, threatening to break her like a dam’s wall when to much water has been stored.
“I’m scared that I’m gonna be a horrible mom.” Chris shook his head. “No, no you, out of all people being a bad mom is like the biggest joke Ariana. You’re gonna be the greatest mom in the world.” Tear streaming down her cheeks again, she found the strength to talk. “Y-you don’t know that Chris.” Her voice trembled with every word.
“No, I don’t. But what person is the best parent. We all make mistakes, but the best thing about being human, is that most of the time, they don’t kill us. They make us who we are, and make us better people.” Her crying had started to slow and he brought her to the nape of his neck and let her cry.
He hated it. He hated seeing her like this. He hated how he couldn’t do anything to stop her. Everything he could try, was something that could fail. He couldn’t bare to see her break. Not like this.
After five more minutes, he made her sit up and look at him through teared eyes. He pulled back some of the hair and placed it behind her ear. “You need to stop crying Ariana. It can’t be good for the baby.” He said in a soft yet stern tone. He wiped her tears away, and eventually they stopped.
“I love you Ariana, so much.” She smiled weakly at him. He knew what he needed to say and do to lighten up her mood. “And you know what? I am not the only one who loves you. Your parents love you, the rest of your family love you, my family definitely love you. Obviously not more than me but just about the same.”
She gave him a genuine smile and a giggle. Her smile was contagious. “But the only other person that loves you maybe even more than me, is the child that you’re carrying. If you make mistakes, she or a him,” he paused. “Shim, will always forgive you and let you have another try. No matter how many times you need it.” She hugged him tightly.
“I love you too Chris.” She finally breathed out, a breath that she was holding for a while. “And Chris?” She looked up at him. “Shim, will love you SO much as well. You’re gonna be the greatest dad. I know that as long as I have you with me, by my side through all this, I’m gonna get through it.”
He settled her down next to him, but after about ten minutes, she had fallen asleep in his arms.

It’s trendy to hate
Ok, so this is kind of a follow up from a previous post from my blog post on cancel culture. Something that I have observed in the last two years on social media is that there is a trend in hyping people up to great success and then once they’ve reached that level, we then see hate start to increase. The first person I saw this happen to was Taylor Swift. After the massive success of the 1989 era, her transition into pop music, we started to see a lot of hate towards Taylor. Part of this I do believe was from the whole Kanye West/Famous situation where Kim had released a recording of Taylor and Kanye’s performance in which we hear Taylor hear the lyric “I think me and Taylor might still have sex”.
We hear Taylor respond to this lyric citing no problems with it. HOWEVER we do not hear that in that recording that Taylor know about the following lyric of making her “famous”, so I’m definitely think to this day Taylor didn’t know about that lyric until The Life of Pablo was released. After this episode of KUWTK aired, the hate for Taylor was immense. Her Instagram comments were filled with snake emoji and a hate train had arrived. Thankfully Taylor was able to take this snake narrative and turn it on it’s head in the Reputation era. Something that I love.
Another example. After Cardi’s Grammy win, she received major backlash from it to the point where she temporarily deactivated her Instagram account. Since Cardi’s Grammy win, I’ve seen a lot of people overnight start to hate Cardi and it begs to question of why do people just start to hate things that are popular. Ella Mai got a fair share of hate the other day when made reference to Jacquees singing trip at Drake’s Assassination Vacation tour where Tory Lanez brought him out as a guest (by the way, you’re in front of 20,000 + people and you sing a cover instead of your original music. That’s the perfect moment to plug your music you idiot). Once Ella, who has had little to say on the situation spoke on how she felt in that moment and yet jacquees did a whole press tour on it, people said she should “get over it” and that’s she’s jealous...a Grammy award winner with two platinum songs and probably another platinum song, a platinum album, a feature with Meek Mill and a sold out tour is jealous of Jacquees’ mediocre cover. Ok go off.
Ariana Grande is another person that received a mass amount of hate after the release of Thank U, Next accusing her of appropriating black culture when Ariana has been heavily influenced by black music from the beginning of her career. Her debut album is a throwback 90’s R&B album heavily inspired by Mariah and Whitney. I could get into the whole culture vulture argument because there is valid point to made about how people roast others for appropriation but let Bhad Bhabie become a thing (this still angers me to this day because she is a joke and a walking caricature)
It’s like it’s cool to hate what’s trendy but is this jumping on the hate train because everyone is? I strongly believe so and this is very dangerous. Kevin Hart in a recent interview spoke on this and I could not agree more on what he said. We need to all have our individual opinions, not collective ones. Why do we build people up only to want bring them down? I just don’t understand this at all. My inspiration for this post was from numerous viral hate tweets about Jennifer Lopez. Recently I keep seeing tweets undermining Jennifer’s career in music and it’s frankly quite annoying and hypocritical and shows that a lot people don’t know the ins and outs of the music industry. The claim that Jennifer has stolen songs is a narrative that has been falsely spread and a couple YouTube video which I will not share the name of because I do not want to hear this narrative at all. For those of you that don’t know, back in 2001-2 the singles I’m Real and Ain’t it Funny remix were co-written by Ashanti. Ashanti’s vocals are also featured as background. Ashanti herself had admitted that she not the so called “ghost voice” of Jennifer Lopez. Also since you lot love Ashanti, I have a crazy suggestion. SUPPORT HER MUSIC AND HER CONCERTS! If you love her so much then why is cancelling concerts because of low ticket sales and not charting. Just saying. Don’t @ me. Period. Slagging off Jennifer does nothing for either one of them when Jennifer minds her, makes money and takes care of her kids and is engaged and you’re making viral tweets like that’s gonna bother her day and brighten Ashanti’s. I’m sure Ashanti would be grateful if you supported her music instead of tweeting.
Ashanti and Jennifer are cool to this day, she’s in the Ain’t it Funny music video and Ashanti is still to this day proud of how successful the songs were. This is a very common practice, there are many examples of this in music. Joe Jonas’ See No More, Lighthouse and Justin Bieber’s Christmas Eve were all written by Chris Brown and Chris’ vocals can be clearly heard in the background and yet no one thinks that Joe and Chris are ghost singing or stole from Chris. Huh. A lot of songs originally intended for other artists get passed on and sometimes their vocals are still on the track. This is a COMMON music industry practice. Some artists write songs from other artists and aren’t even credited for their contribution. An example of this is Jason Derulo’s Want You to Want Me. Want You to Want Me was actually ghostwritten by Chris Brown for his sixth studio album X but the track was abandoned because he felt that it wasn’t cohesive with the album as a whole which I agree with. His demo can be found on YouTube which I will link but unless you go on to Wikipedia, you wouldn’t know this fact. Tracks can be stolen and that has happened but 95% of the time, it is the producer that is responsible for this or a label executive. A sample of the song Firecracker was orginally meant for Mariah Carey’s Loverboy but ended up on Jennifer Lopez’s I’m Real. It was revealed that Tommy Mottola was responsible for this happening. For those of you that don’t know who Tommy Mottola is, he was the head of Sony music all through the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Tommy Mottola is responsible for many artists careers in particular Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez. Tommy Mottola was also Mariah Carey’s first husband who she was with until 1997. Mariah has been candid about the mental and emotional abuse she dealt with in the marriage and how she practically a prisoner in her own home as Tommy controlled everything in her life. After their split, Tommy seemingly attempted to sabotage her career and the stealing of the sample was one of this many attempts. A lot of the time when events like this happen, the artist is unaware of this. Yeah 3x uses the melody of Calvin Harris’ I’m Not Alone, something that Chris Brown was not aware of until he met with Calvin Harris and he played I’m Not Alone to him. Calvin knew the producer DJ Frank E and he had uses his melody with Calvin knowing. Thankfully Calvin was then credited as a featured writer on the song and the situation was resolved. I believe to this day and it’s pretty damn obvious that Tommy Mottola used Jennifer as a pawn in his plan to ruin Mariah’s career as revenge. He put Jennifer out there as his new golden girl replacing Mariah and this helped the false narrative of feud between Mariah and Jennifer when neither artist has ever said anything negative about each other and Jennifer has said in interviews that she loves Mariah as an artist.
This became very long winded but I had to discuss this because I’ve had enough but I will say this. Have you notice a theme in the trendy to hate? Because I have. They’re all women. Women are trend to hate and men get all the glory huh? Below is all the songs I mentioned and chicagojlover on Twitter did a thread in regards all the ghost singing rumours that needs to go viral.

Akward Class Favorites Playlist 2018
I know I’m getting this up pretty late, but here is the longest end of the year playlist since I started doing these. It’s full of all the songs that I was really coming back to this year from December 2017-November 2018. I tried to tell a story this time, but I’m not sure how well that came across or if I even succeeded. (Let me know if you catch anything.) Anyways follow along and read some anecdotes or the extra love I have for some of the tracks and let me know some of your favorites.
Thanks for another year here on The Akward Blog and I hope you stick around for more stories, reviews and memories.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 01/05/2021
You know the drill by now, right? This week is a strange one, and we’ll get to exactly why in a bit but for now, Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)” spends a fifth week at #1. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Rundown
Just as we had a pretty relaxed week last week, we have another one this time, and possibly one of the least interesting weeks in British singles chart history, if anything just preparing us for whatever comes out of the DJ Khaled album next week. With that said, there is some movement in the UK Top 75, the group of songs which I cover, including some notable drop-outs, notable in this case meaning the song had spent more than five weeks on the chart or peaked in the top 40. That includes AJ Tracey’s “Anxious” off of the album-boosted return last week and “Best Friend” by Saweetie featuring Doja Cat making its exit after 15 weeks.
We do have some returning entries as well, as “Addicted” by Jorja Smith makes a comeback to #58, alongside some bottom-hangers like “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi at #72 and “Slumber Party” by Ashnikko featuring Princess Nokia right beside it at #73. Where it gets more interesting would be our gains and losses, and starting with the latter, we have “Don’t Play” by Anne-Marie, KSI and Digital Farm Animals getting ACR’d at #45, HVME’s remix of Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps” falling naturally to #48, “Solid” by Young Stoner Life, Young Thug and Gunna featuring Drake at #55 off of the debut, “Mr. Perfectly Fine” by Taylor Swift at #63 and “Mercury” by Dave and Kamal. plunging to #68, as well as some seriously harsh drops for Central Cee as “Commitment Issues” falls to #57 and “6 for 6” is at #64.
Our gains, however, are a lot more interesting. We have “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles taking advantage of a weak chart at #70, “How Does it Feel” by London Grammar with an unexpected boost to #67, about as unexpected as “Sunshine (The Light)” by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Amorphous at #62, “Heat” by Paul Woolford and Amber Mark at #61, “You” by Regard, Troye Sivan and Tate McRae off of the debut to #56, “Cover Me in Sunshine” by P!nk and Willow Sage Heart at #54, “Martin & Gina” by Polo G rebounding at #51, “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)” by Fred again.. and The Blessed Madonna sadly at #47 and “Summer 91 (Looking Back)” by Noizu at #43. Entering the top 40 for the first time are “Last Time” by Becky Hill at #39 and “Starstruck” by Years & Years at #38, their first top 40 hit since 2018. They join other gains within the top 40 like “Anywhere Away from Here” by Rag’n’Bone Man and P!nk rebounding to #32, “Runaway” by AURORA at #29, “Didn’t Know” by Tom Zanetti at #24 and Majestic’s remix of “Rasputin” by Boney M. at #21. Whilst the Ariana Grande remix may have done nothing for “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd just pushing up to #20, a remix did have an effect on “Body” by Russ Millions and Tion Wayne, surging up to the top 10 at #4 thanks to a new version with ArrDee, ZT and E1 of 3x3, Darkoo, Buni, Bugzy Malone and, for whatever reason, Fivio Foreign. None of those artists are credited by the Official Charts Company however so it just becomes both Russ and Tion Wayne’s highest ever charting song. So, now that all of that is out of the way, how about we get into our new arrivals... or shall I say, new arrival?
NEW ARRIVAL
#75 – “Come Through” – H.E.R. featuring Chris Brown
Produced by Cardiak
Yeah, I said this was an uninteresting week, but really, what are the odds that in the entire UK Singles Chart, the only song to enter the top 75 of songs listened to by the British public in this tracking week was at #75 and by Chris Brown? Yeah, it must be really dire here in ol’ England, huh? I was thinking about how to get around this – I mean, there are two more new arrivals in the top 100 in general that I found whilst fact-checking this anomaly of a week, but it’s just some house song and a Bugzy Malone throwaway single, both of which might debut in the top 75 proper next week. I could have talked about some foreign charts, like, say, the US Billboard Hot 100? Australia? The global charts? Hell, I could have even betrayed my nation and talked about the French charts for this episode. I decided against that, however, on a basis of principle. When I started this series up again after a break in Autumn of last year, I promised to myself that I would bring what this series used to lack: consistency. I would always, on every Saturday, deliver a review of the songs that first entered the UK Top 75 that week. That is the plan and how it will stay until I decide to overhaul the format again, which at this rate is probably going to be a temporary Christmas fix and not much else. With all that said, I’m a compulsive liar. I’m not going to review a Chris Brown song; I’ve always actively avoided reviewing his songs proper on this series and this is no different as you can tell by a stalling method I’d perfected for when this guy’s songs end up in the public consciousness. H.E.R.’s success in the US has always seemed really odd for me considering how little the public resonates with all of her award-winning, critically-acclaimed work – that has never done anything for me personally – and this is actually her highest-charting song in the UK as a lead artist as a result of the feature from one Mr. Breezy. Speaking of that guy, he has never released a good song that doesn’t feature Drake and even that is stretching it as really he just has that one good song with Drake from around 2019 and nothing else. Of course, that’s just my opinion, and if you like the man’s music, that’s fine, but I really can’t get over how the industry has normalised this guy so heavily considering his streak of continually abusive and violent behaviour. I’d wish the guy got help if it at least made the music any better. At least it’s not “Freaky Friday”, I suppose.
Conclusion
Surely, Cactus, you can’t give a song any of the titles in a week where there’s only one song to review, right, let alone Worst of the Week? My answer to that is, “Screw you, it’s my show”, and that Worst of the Week goes to “Come Through” by H.E.R. featuring Chris Brown. Best of the Week goes to – God, I don’t know, that song 3OH!3 did with Katy Perry in 2009. Now, that’s a pop classic. Here’s this week’s top 10:
Thank you for reading! I’ll see you next week.
