okay so i cant find anyone talking about it online and that's probably cause it just came out but

"sitting in bars with cakes" struck me as a gay love story and my family disagreed so i gotta see if anyone else got that vibe?

its based on a true story by the author of the book and writer of the screenplay so i feel like a lot of the additional details were intentional. the idea, its namesake, is for the two female protagonists (friends/roommates) to bring cakes to bars to meet men. over the course of the movie, both women end up leaving the men they met and instead focusing on their time together. these "best friends" hold hands while walking, sing "wake me up before you go" karaoke together, meet each other's families and work out a plan for one to become the other's caregiver, recommend and share underwear, and towards the end the caregiver "shares the secret" that she only moved to stay with her friend because she'd "follow her anywhere", tells her how beautiful and amazing her friend is, that she loves her, and holds her hand (in bed, face to face). all of this is paired with scenes in which the caregiver gives her friend a pride flag that the friend carries in a later scene, a rainbow balloon, women pulling each other closer while watching them sing together, what i thought looked like the caregiver going to a gay bar with her last cake, and then bringing a gift from the bar to the grave of the friend.

to me it screamed "tragic love story" in which they waited until the deathbed to admit they loved each other. but then like, yeah, any good friend or family member would tell a dying loved one how loved and appreciated they are on their deathbed. all the articles say it's a story about "female friendship", but i can't tell if that's just heteronormativity or not? someone suggested maybe the pride flags and such were intentional as a sort of bait for lgbtqia+ viewers to cling to and interpret as more significant than it really was, but the fact that the person whose life it's based upon wrote the screenplay makes it seem more intentional. i couldn't find anything from the author yet, so hopefully the longer this movie is out, the more we'll hear about it

I knew I would cry just from the trailer but when it got to the second part of the movie and things started getting serious I cried (real tears) so much, it's honestly one of the saddest movies I've seen in a while and the whole connection, friendship, pure love between the two girls is everything, such a soul-touching movie
