WIP Wednesday

I was tagged by @cr-noble-writes last week already & decided to wait until today since it was already Friday when I got the notification XD

Shepard woke because he was pulled out of bed quite unceremoniously, landing on his hands and knees. He tried to get up, tried to regain his equilibrium, holding onto his nightstand for dear life. He had almost managed when the world was tilting on its axis again. Literally.

Shit. What the fuck was happening? The room kept spinning and his stomach churned violently. Were they under attack? Surely, Joker would’ve informed him outright, wouldn’t he?

“Joker,” he croaked, “what’s our status?”

“Board’s green, Commander. We’re running smooth and silent.”

“Sure doesn’t feel like it.”

“You sure don’t sound like it either. You okay?”

“Yeah.” He swallowed, trying to keep the rising bile at bay and in his stomach. “Yeah, I’m alright.” He searched for a fix point he could focus on, but failed miserably when the gravity well flipped again. “Shit.”

“With all due respect, sir, you don’t sound ‘alright’. I can alert the Doc to your quarters.”

“No. No, it’s okay, Joker. Maybe Miller’s stew wasn’t quite dead yet.”

It had become a running gag on the Normandy that one should definitely test their food if it was truly dead, after Mess Sergeant Miller had managed to serve vat-grown meat as a bloody mess, so to speak, because he had been busy flirting with Chief Williams. She had also been the one to ask him if she needed to kill her meal first.

Shepard had never seen anyone this flustered before as the sergeant on that day.

Joker chortled. “That would explain the heartburn.”

Shepard grinned and finally managed to get to his feet. “Thanks anyway, Joker. Shepard out.”

Exactly what I'm writing right now :)

Look slow burn is great but have you considered: slow burn and the opposite at the same time.

One of them looks at the other for the first time and is like “that one.” Ready to marry them five minutes later. Falls like a ton of bricks.

Other one is completely oblivious to this and fails in love so slowly that they go boiled frog and don’t realise for years that they love the other one back just as fiercely, and have for a while, until it’s “oh” time.

I was tagged by the lovely @galifreyas! Thank you! This was tricky to narrow down to 5 OTPs but I think I’m finally happy with my choices :D

5 OTPs

1. Mulder x Scully

“Those were the most paranoid people I have ever met. I don't know how you could think that what they say is even remotely plausible.” “I think it's remotely plausible that someone might think you're hot.”

The original and the best. I shipped Mulder/Scully back when I was 12 years old and didn’t even know what shipping was. I almost died the first time I watched the episode (Arcadia) where they go undercover as a married couple. Despite their differences they have nothing for the utmost respect for one another and trust each other implicitly. They are PERFECT and I love them no matter what nonsense Chris Carter will throw at the wall for series 11.

2. Cullen x Inquisitor

By which I really mean Cullen x happiness. I’ll ship him with anyone so long as he has a happy ending, poor baby has suffered enough. Also: desk scene. 

3. Arthur Clennam x Amy Dorrit

Tags: friends to lovers, emotional hurt/comfort, one-sided pining, angst with a happy ending. UGHHH. Please go read Little Dorrit right now (or watch the BBC adaptation, it’s very good, just look at Matthew Macfayden’s face). Amy is the most precious cinnamon roll in the whole world and her love for Arthur is so pure. And Arthur, words cannot describe how much I love Arthur, but Dickens himself sums up accurately why I love him:

He was a dreamer in such wise, because he was a man who had, deep-rooted in his nature, a belief in all the gentle and good things his life had been without.

They’re not your classic heroes and it’s not a sweep-you-off-your-feet romance; they’re just two people, raised in adversity and cruelty, who have somehow managed to become the most kindhearted individuals in all of 19th century London, and I absolutely adore them for it. 

4. Shepard x Kaidan

My first Bioware romance, I blame Kaidan Alenko entirely for my love of Bioware’s games and therefore for this blog. Do you know what happened? I was playing Mass Effect so much around exam time that I said to myself ‘alright this has to stop, play that dragon game, you won’t like it as much and then you can move on’. That was three years ago. Please help me. Anyway Kaidan and Shepard are super sweet and they definitely retire to Canada together after the destroy ending.

5. House x Wilson

Confession: I’ve never seen the final season of House, but I know Bad Things™ happen in it, so I’m just going to pretend it ends with these two finally realising their love for one another and spending many happy years together with no-one dying of cancer.

1. I’m left-handed.

My favourite Disney film is The Little Mermaid. I was obsessed as a kid.

I’ve lived with my housemate for 7 years. We have the same first name, did the same degree and have spent the last two years working in the same hospital (half the time in the same department). This confuses everyone.

I have a Harry Potter tattoo which I have successfully hidden from my family for two years.

I’m a surprisingly good pool player.

I have an unholy love of Reece’s Pieces.

I’m currently having a career crisis, specialty applications are in November and I have no idea what I’m going to do, someone please make my life decisions for me?

I’m incredibly clumsy. Not like cute clumsy, cursed clumsy. One time at work I accidentally threw a pen at a newborn baby.

I don’t cry tears.

I can’t read the word ‘epitome’ without first pronouncing it ‘ep-ee-tome’ and I hate myself for it.

Oh yeah asking would be better 😂 give me Shep facts please!

Let's start with the fact that I have two Shepard's 😂 Well, three actually, if I consider the non-descriptive Shepard I use to write my FFF prompts about, not counting The Damage Done and Virmire Reprised here because whole different story.

Let's start with Chris Shepard. Typical Navy Brat, if you ask him. He grew up on various space stations and ships & loved every second of it.

He's a biotic, but also very proficient with a shotgun, which makes him a natural vanguard.

He loves his mom & is on no-speaking terms with his father.

He held the line on Elysium when he was 22, enlisting in the N-program afterwards.

During his training, it became apparent that he’s a natural born leader and has thing for resolving tight situations.

Four months prior to joining the Normandy, he had to realise that not all situations can be resolved without bloodshed. When biotic terrorists who had taken a couple of colonists hostage to blackmail the Alliance into letting them walk away with almost a ton of Red Sand, Shepard was dispatched to resolve the situation peacefully. However, the terrorists killed two hostages to emphasise their demands.  

Shepard got severely injured during the ensuing fight. He managed to save the rest of the hostages but had to kill all terrorists. 

And because you asked in your comment how he ended up with Kaidan:

He met Kaidan for the first time during his recovery in Vancouver, while Kaidan was on shore leave. Neither had any idea that the other was career military. When that became apparent, Kaidan called it quits & broke Shepard's heart.

When they meet again on the Normandy, Shepard goes out of his way to make a friendship and a professional business relationship work, but Kaidan's battlefield flirting and innuendo is getting to him & they find themselves giving into each other again after Virmire.

Shepard's hellbent on making it work afterwards, but yeah. Dying sure puts an end to that. For the moment :)
