The thing I see get cited as Claremont Gay Ally Moments that drives me the craziest, I think, is Dani and Rahne being soulmates. Because like. Okay. Lets break this one down.

Under Claremont, Dani at least a few times refers to Rahne as her soulmate. They have a special psychic soulmate bond. Why? Because Rahne is a werewolf-- er, human mutant who turns into a wolf. Why does that matter?

Because originally, Dani had ambiguous Talks To Animals abilities, in addition to her actual mutant powers of projecting peoples fears/desires.

Why did Dani, completely unrelated to her actual mutation, have ambiguous Talks To Animals powers? Because she's Native. And Native people can just do that, right?

So even though Dani and Rahne being soulmates is, yes, pretty gay, this is also pretty directly drawn from racist stereotypes about Native people. So presenting that as just "see look Claremont wrote a lot of gay(-coded) people in the 80s! Look these two girls are soulmates!" is... well, it's not something I'm a huge fan of, let's just say.

I love everything about this panel lol. Warlock looming over Dani and Rahne like that Homer Simpson meme realising Doug might have meant something else when he said they were r o o m m a t e s. Them being too gay for each other to notice a critically injured moira in the background. Bobby just awkwardly standing there on the edge of frame clearly not helping anyone. So much going on. Peak visual comedy.
