Courtside Drama: Clipped Review
Shows that dramatize real-life events are sometimes hit or miss. The reason why they miss is often due to straying from reality for the sake of dramatization. The ones that do work are the ones that usually either make you want to learn more or expand upon what you already know.
Clipped works very well as a series. Most people have heard in passing the story of Donald Sterling and his catastrophic fall from grace as owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. What a lot of people do not know is the intricate details that lead up to that, the social fallouts that occurred, and how everything fell into place after it all came to light.
The reason why this series comes together so well is because it targets every aspect of the story. The recorded conversations with V, the ramifications at home, and the pressure the media put onto the team itself. While the writing at times felt a little Hollywoodish and over emphasized, we have to remind ourselves this a world very few people live in. By that, I mean a social status most every day people don't understand. The power that billions of dollars and a slice of that pie offers the rich.
When we see a story lob something at us like this, we almost expect the over theatrics. It helps us understand the world wherein this happens in a little better. Hyperbole often leads to us remaining focused, and this show definitely uses that to its advantage. It showcases each level of the dramatics as well and how each person who dealt with the Sterlings had feelings toward what went down.

That is where the cast comes in. Led by Ed O'Neill and Jackie Weaver as Donald and Shelly Sterling, the show gave them material to showcase their talent. O'Neill had been a staple of the TV game for decades now, and this may be one of his best roles to date. In the early and later episodes, we got a lot of focus on Donald and Shelly.
Through the middle episodes the focus shifted a little and focused on V's personal story and connection to Donald. It also juxtaposed that against the team and how they felt playing for a man like Donald. This allowed Cleopatra Coleman to shine as V, as she tried to put on a show for the press while things crumbled behind closed foors. It also allowed Laurence Fishburne a few big monologues and bright spots as Clippers coach Doc Rivers.
Had the show focused on one angle over the rest, it would have grown tedious and boring. That is why it worked. Just when the gaps in story would occur, they shifted the focus to another perspective. Wrapping that all nicely together but a dramatic story into a streamline for audiences. This is a great show for those who want to learn more about what happened. For those who follow daily NBA and sports shows, it gave them subject for conversation. Either way, it has people speaking on a pivotal NBa moment in the last couple of decades, and conversation is always welcomed.
