Did Ryuga regress in Metal Fury?

Many fans have pointed out that Ryuga's quest to take the star fragments from the Legendary Bladers was akin to character assassination. His power-hungry side seemingly resurfaced, something that appeared to be toned down during Metal Masters. Here, I will analyze Ryuga's reasoning and try to understand why he took this path—and whether he truly reverted to his Fusion persona.

Why Did Ryuga Go His Own Way to Steal the Star Fragment?

Before the Star Fragment appeared, he was the only character able to evolve his Bey. Then, Kyoya claimed that Leone had evolved, making the "conditions equals" between them. Though Ryuga won and initially denied the power of the Star Fragment, he likely saw it as a potential threat to his dominance in Beyblade, as Kyoya's word resonated with that idea.

Gingka, whom Ryuga respected in Masters, showed up without fully mastering his Bey, giving Ryuga even fewer reasons to listen to him. He even said, "I'm disappointed in you, Gingka."

He defeated two of the strongest Bladers he knew, which definitely boosted his confidence.

He first believed he was the one who evolved L-Drago, but by the end of episode 107, he accepted the truth. However, for him, that meant other people in the world also had Star Fragments, making them potential threats.

Ryuga hated seeing others with left-spinning Beys, so why would he tolerate others possessing Star Fragments and evolving their Beys?

Other characters besides Ryuga became enchanted with this power—like Aguma and Chris, who used their Star Fragments for personal gain rather than stopping Nemesis. So it’s not really surprising that Ryuga, who also wanted to use his power for his own benefit, took a similar path.

Ryuga had no reason to join Gingka, as none of them knew the connection between Nemesis and Hades Inc.

Conclusion:

We can see that Ryuga went his own way because he had no reason to follow Gingka. His confidence had been boosted by his victories and the power he had received, and he also saw the Legendary Bladers as potential threats to his dominance.

Did Ryuga Change Compared to Masters?

Even in Masters, Ryuga valued strength and power over everything else. When he met Tsubasa, he remarked, "I have gotten my hands on a new power that makes the old dark force look like a toddler throwing a tantrum". So in a way he was satisfied the power he had.

In addition, there was no power for him to absorb in Masters, and he had already evolved his Bey.

At that time, he was the strongest in the world—or at least he thought he was—so he had no reason to pursue other Bladers to steal their power.

He allied with Gingka to defeat Ziggurat, whom he deeply hated and saw as the reason he was used by the Dark Nebula. He also had a debt to pay to Gingka and respected him.

Ryuga in Fusion was much more brutal and one-dimensional—all he seemed to care about was winning and giving more power to L-Drago to become stronger. This might have been due to the dark power's influence.

In Masters, these traits were toned down, and he developed a new philosophy of Beyblade: that one must give their all in battle. To Zeo, he said, "Bringing your own strength out to the fullest and completely defeating your opponent with the power of your very own Bey—that is a battle, that is a Bey battle."

In Fury, he also told Gingka, "If you call yourself a real Blader, then try and make me listen to you." This shows that Ryuga still believed in strength but also in the idea that Bladers "communicate" through battle, as Gingka often says.

His relationship with Kenta further proves that he didn’t fully regress. If Ryuga had completely gone back to his Fusion self, he would have gotten rid of Kenta. Instead, his philosophy remained intact, as seen when he told Kenta: "Then challenge me, kid. No matter what time it is or where we are, whether we're eating or sleeping—can you actually force me to take you seriously?"

Conclusion:

While Ryuga's pursuit of the Star Fragment made him appear more power-hungry, he didn’t regress to his Fusion persona. Instead, his actions were consistent with his philosophy. The situation between Masters and Fury also had drastically changed. His bond with Kenta show that, despite his arrogance, he still held onto his beliefs from Masters.

It’s understandable that seeing a character like Ryuga go from actively helping the protagonist to potentially becoming a threat feels like a major shift. However, considering the Dragon Emperor’s personality—his arrogance, the events that led to this change, and his philosophy—it’s not entirely surprising. The writers aimed to make Ryuga a more neutral character rather than simply adding him to Gingka’s team, and this choice aligns with his character. It would have been far too easy for him to simply accept Gingka’s demands without question.

Additionally, this shift is consistent with how other characters reacted to their newfound power, as many sought to use it for their own goals rather than for a common cause. In the end, Ryuga was unsuccessful in his quest, proving that he was on the wrong path and that the Legendary Bladers needed to be united to truly fulfill their purpose.

Most chaotic MFB Beyblade AU to pop up into my head. Part 3: Metal Fury

And then… Metal Fury. Ho boy, this is a wild ride.

Dynamis explains what happened with the star fragment, as his arcs’ episodes showed he was the one to split the star fragments, but didn't know where they went. So when Kyoya and Gingka revealed their beys evolved, he starts freaking out. And then when Ryuga and Yuki's beys are evolved, that's when he comes to the conclusion.

Dynamis: Did the star fragments literally go to every single one of us? Like is this the reason we are linked together?!

Gingka: Only one way to find out. Road Trip!

Thus starts the journey to find the other legendary bladers, except Ryutaro joins in with the group. Canon events happen, with some changes. The boys meet up with Aguma and Bao in the tournament (with Bao knowing the whole story, those two have a brotherly bond and you can't convince me otherwise). Johannes goes after them to recruit the beylin fist without knowing Aguma and Bao are already on the Legendary Bladers’ side, and the two decide heck it, let's spy on them, because it's gone well in the past. Next is to New York for Destroyer Dome, where we learn some new details about some of the boys. Dynamis wasn't too happy about the temple holding VariAres being destroyed.

Dynamis: “You destroyed your family's temple?”

Kyoya: “You're so screwed.”

Gingka (slightly terrified): “I don't think I've ever heard Dynamis this mad before.”

Yeah... don't destroy temples around the historian/lorekeeper/guardian. He's not a happy person when you do that.

Anyways!

The boys finally get to Mist Mountain, run into Ryuto, and scale the mountain. Via their spying, Aguma and Bao get into some battles, Johannes starts getting into Kyoya's head. Canon events continue up until the end, where instead after Kyoya leaves the temple, he just goes outside to take a breather. The other legendary bladers are there to pick up the pieces of Kyoya's emotions, and eventually Kyoya stays the night before parting to help find Tithi. Both Tithi and Chris’ searches fall around the same time frame, and everyone is happy. Except for one thing.

Pluto.

He barges in on the middle of this happy group and activates Dynamis’ curse like the smug little man he is. This puts all the legendary bladers on high alert to get to Nemesis’ revival site to save their friend. Some battles happen as Canon, although some interactions are adjusted for this AU. At some point it goes from the standard Chris VS Gingka, Yuki VS Cycnus, Dynamis VS Kyoya, and Aguma VS Tithi to Aguma, Kyoya, and Tithi teaming up to save Dynamis, and Gingka, Yuki, and Chris just wrecking Cycnus and causing mayhem.

Now where is Ryuga in all this?

Still training to get stronger and master L-Drago, and Kenta is determined to recruit Ryuga to help. The Sagitarrio blader took Ryuga's not willing to join in on the search as him not helping his friends (when it's really the opposite, Ryuga just isn't one for big groups). Eventually the misunderstanding is cleared up, and Kenta actually grows on the L-Drago blader. All the while he's just giving commentary on the whole thing.

Ryuga: Gingka your friend is not half bad as a blader as he thinks he is. He cracked L-Drago's face bolt this time.

Gingka: Oh wow! That's some strength!

The remaining events in the temple fall under Canon, Doji returns (and is the menace that he is except he throws his own bey in there to bait Ryuga to breaking formation). Ryuga actually stays with the group while they all heal, but still gets badly injured during the final battle and gives Kenta his star fragment (he's living though, screw the anime on that). The final battle happens and they all recover again together. Kenta ends up linked to their group during the final battle, and he's not expecting the chaos of it all in the days after that.Part 3 will probably cover personality differences and AU changes for our boys.

Questo è possibile non è solo perché, dal punto di vista pratico, sono tornati più volte in sala, sono passati in TV e ora sono lì a disposizione nel catalogo di Disney+, ma anche perché lo studio che li ha realizzati tutti, i Walt Disney Animation Studios, hanno compiuto 100 anni nel 2023. 100 anni, un secolo. Vi rendete conto dell'enormità di questo intervallo di tempo? Un periodo tale da permettere di abbracciare generazioni, famiglie intere da nonni a nipoti. Ed è un tempo che il nuovo film, Wish, si prefigge di festeggiare, di omaggiare. 100 anni, un secolo, di storie e personaggi, di sogni e desideri, di sogni che son desideri, concetti che proprio il nuovo lavoro diretto da Chris Buck insieme a Fawn Veerasunthorn (già autrice del sottovalutato Raya e l'ultimo drago) porta avanti, sottolinea e incarna, raccontandoci di Asha e del regno di Rosas, dove, per l'appunto, i desideri diventano realtà.

Una storia ambientata nel magico regno di Rosas

Wish: un'immagine

Ed è proprio attorno a sogni e desideri che ruota la trama di Wish, portandoci nel magico regno di Rosas. Ad accoglierci è la protagonista Asha, che ha proprio questo compito nella sua vita di tutti i giorni: accogliere. È infatti la persona che dà il benvenuto ai visitatori di questa isola al largo della penisola iberica e allo stesso modo introduce noi alla storia del nuovo Classico Disney. È una sognatrice, una persona che desidera con una forza tale da far sì che i suoi sogni non si limitino a rimanere tali: esprime infatti un desiderio così potente da essere recepito, accolto, da una forza cosmica, una piccola stella, una minuscola forza di energia, che risponde al nome di Star. Ed è proprio insieme a Star che Asha dovrà operare per far fronte ai piani del sovrano di Rosas, Re Magnifico, l'uomo più potente del regno dal quale tutti si recano per far realizzare i propri sogni. Perché è l'unico che può farlo e promette di esaudirli prima o poi, detenendo il potere di farlo e di decidere quali desideri far avverare e quando.

Asha contro Magnifico

Da una parte c'è Asha, la nostra eroina a cui da la voce la cantante Gaia Gozzi, la nuova principessa Disney in quanto protagonista di un Classico che diventa per l'occasione IL Classico per eccellenza, dall'altra Re Magnifico. Ed è questa la vera notizia di Wish: il ritorno di un villain degno di tale nome, a cui dà voce in italiano Michele Riondino. È un personaggio suggestivo, affascinante, il suo Re Magnifico. Una figura che forse sarebbe potuta essere un pizzico più ambigua nel corso della storia, ma funziona come antagonista della nostra protagonista Asha. Lei, dal canto suo, ha le armi che tutti vorremmo: i suoi sogni e il suo coraggio, una gran forza d'animo e un importante aiuto esterno, ovvero quello della magica Star. A dimostrazione che dall'unione delle qualità interiori dell'animo umano e della magia si possono ottenere grandi cose… come ha fatto anche Walt, no?

Wish: una scena del film

Sono personaggi riusciti quelli attorno a cui ruota Wish, che siano Asha e Star o Magnifico, ma è impagabile anche la capretta Valentino, che nella nostra lingua può fregiarsi della voce di un personaggio noto e amato come Amadeus. È un cast di personaggi ben tratteggiato anche dal punto di vista visivo, con un character design che dona varietà, colore e anima al regno di Rosas rendendolo vivo di umanità oltre che di sogni irrealizzati. È anche per loro che Wish funziona e intrattiene, anche laddove lo script fa fatica a girare, anche se impiega tempo a partire, ingranare e aprire le porte al cuore degli spettatori. Anche se, purtroppo, ha più forza nell'idea della celebrazione del mondo Disney che nella realizzazione di questo sentito omaggio.

Una nuova frontiera visiva

C'è anche un altro aspetto che rende Wish interessante per gli appassionati d'animazione, che rende ancor più significativo il suo essere film che celebra i 100 anni di uno dei più importanti studi mondiali del settore: la tecnica usata, che lavora sulla fusione di animazione tradizionale e CGI. Era il 2012, più di dieci anni fa, quando abbiamo visto un primo interessante esempio di questo tipo di lavorazione con il magnifico corto Paperman, ma nel frattempo la fusione di tecniche diverse in animazione sembra essere diventata un traguardo futuro e quasi imprescindibile per proporre qualcosa di nuovo e innovativo. I Walt Disney Animation Studios stanno sviluppando tecniche di tipo diverso, che sembrano puntare più alla sovrapposizione che lo sfruttamento fianco a fianco, alla coesistenza, di stili diversi.

Wish: una sequenza del film

Quello che mostrava con successo Paperman e che viene ripreso non troppo dissimile da Wish è il voler ottenere un look e un calore da disegno a mano pur usando un contesto animato in CGI. Avere, cioè, la versatilità, libertà di inquadrature e movimenti di camera dell'animazione al computer, ma mantenendo il valore artistico e pittorico del disegno a mano. Lo si vede negli splendidi fondali, ma anche nel look generale della messa in scena, dei dettagli e della composizione del quadro. È forse una tecnica ancora un filo acerba, che vedremo esplodere di bellezza solo nei prossimi anni, ma è di certo il modo giusto per celebrare 100 anni di sogni, desideri e successi. Guardandosi alle spalle, emozionando nel guardare a un passato che non può essere dimenticato e trascurato, ma guardando avanti. Perché è quello che Walt Disney ha sempre fatto e ha insegnato a fare.

In conclusione guardando Wish non si può non emozionarsi ripensando al glorioso cammino sviluppato dagli studi d’animazione Disney nel corso dei loro cento anni di storia. Ma rimanendo ugualmente consapevole che l’omaggio rappresentato dal film e nel film è riuscito e sensato più nelle intenzioni che nell’effettiva applicazione pratica. Buono il lavoro sui personaggi, e sul cattivo di turno rappresentato da Re Magnifico, così come è importante e interessante la componente tecnica che mira ad aggiungere il calore del disegno a mano alle potenzialità della CGI. Peccato per uno script che in alcuni passaggi gira un po’ a vuoto, ma questo non ci impedisce di emozionarci e festeggiare lo studio creato da Walt Disney.

La componente artistica, che si avvale di splendidi background dal gusto pittorico e il calore da disegno a mano apportato dalla tecnica usata.

L’omaggio, imprescindibile e doveroso a quanto fatto in cento anni di storia…

Cosa non va 👎🏻

… ma forse riuscito più nelle intenzioni che nella realizzazione.

Lo script non scorre sempre con naturalezza e soffre di alcuni passaggi poco riusciti.

Oh my gosh they've cast Hiccup and Astrid for the Live-Action.

I uh. I have thoughts

I wrote more of them out and decided to delete them because I didn't want to sound too negative. I will say these three things:

Dean Deblois as the director has almost NEVER worked live-action before. He started out as an animation storyboard artist and first became a director for "Heima", a documentary about Sigur Rós. After that, he mostly worked Httyd. This is his directorial debut for a live-action movie. I'm excited because I root for him to take this step in his personal career..., but he's better with Chris Sanders by his side imho. I want him to do this on a different project.

Astrid was cast as mixed-race Black. Look. The kids are cute and I feel the love in their expressions. Someone made the standing point that Astrid's specific looks weren't a defining part of her character in the Httydverse. Nico Parker is pretty and talented for sure. But we're talking vikings 900 AD., guys... Drago is another story because he was meant to come from far away. Also, I didn't even take a second look at 'Hiccup'. He lacks the og charm, which has been impossible to replace from the start. But we knew that.

They have the opportunity to pull the funniest shit and actually cast Gerard Butler as Stoick, and I'd take Craig Ferguson as Gobber too

Ohhh yeah! I admit I kind of forgot about Dagur as an option-

He could have been taken by Drago when he burnt down the chieftain meeting. The old chief thought him to be dead, so the title went to Chris.

Chris doesn't remember him, but Martin remembers him. People only know of him, but no one knows him truly. No one can recognize him anymore, but he knows all of them. It's maddening and infuriating that they all just... forgot him. He thinks none of them care. He thought that when he got back that everyone would be relieved. But... nothing. They don't recognize him. They don't know him. They forgot him.

Of course they didn't actually forget, it had just been so long, and Martin had changed a lot. Maybe even some new scarring that left him unrecognizable. But Martin can't process that. Not being recognized by his own family snapped his final thread.

There's an episode waaay later on where Martin and Chris could be trapped together, and Chris just gets exasperated and asks why he even does all of this, why he hates them so much, and Martin shouts something like "I NEVER HATED YOU!" or "BECAUSE YOU ALL FORGOT ME!" and Chris finally learns who he is.

It would be so heartbreaking. Gimme ten minutes and I'll have a short story that will have you in a choke hold.
