The Flesh and the Fiends feels like a Hammer Film – although, in terms of producers, it is much closer to a Tempean film – and retells the Burke and Hare case of the late 1820s in Scotland. Burke and Hare (George Rose and Donald Pleasence) are “the fiends.” Mary (Billie Whitelaw) and their other victims are “the flesh.” Dr. Knox (Peter Cushing) is the one who purchases “the flesh” from “the fiends.” These four actors steal the show! And if you’ve ever wished you lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, during the 1820s, you might reconsider that wish after seeing this film. Or you might not. Let us know!
At the time of this writing, The Flesh and the Fiends (1960) is available to stream from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV, Kanopy, and Flix Fling as well as PPV from Amazon and Flix Fling. It is available on physical media as a Blu-ray formatted disc from Kino Lorber.

BARBARIANS - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: IFC Midnight
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  Adam and Eva awaken in their supposed dream house on Adam’s birthday. Lucas, property developer and friend of the couple, arrives for dinner with his actress girlfriend Chloe, to celebrate Adam's birthday and the couple’s buying of the house. Secrets begin to unravel over dinner. Then the doorbell rings and the evening takes a nightmarish turn. Manners give way to madness and what was supposed to be an 'idyllic' evening of celebration descends into a dark night of terror; and the group's civilized dinner party turns out to be anything but.
REVIEW: BARBARIANS is as complex as a Rubik cube. At the core of these moving parts is a sense that something is wrong with the environment. There is a monolith at the core of this development that could channel energy, a diseased fox, and something unspoken about the land. The plot unravels with horrifying consequences like a sinister nesting doll.
Charles Dorfman is an intricate weaving of all character dynamics and the environment that plays out with a thin sense of ritual as it sets it against the backdrop of a dinner and a birthday. There is a prologue that sets up what this community where Adam and Eve’s house is supposed to be, yet for all its promises things are not what they appear. As the characters come together Dorfman strips away who these characters present themselves and reveals their primal selves. There are many hidden truths lying just below the surface. Is this happening due to some unseen catalysts or is it because these personalities come together in this space? When these three masked intruders show up things spiral out of control and become deadly. Their presence is a result of Lucas’ actions in securing the land for the development. It is a rising crescendo that explodes from all the built up tension leaving the viewer with much to ponder.
The production values are fantastic. The location is hypnotic. The special effects are haunting. There is an aspect to the costumes that seems to build upon the sense of ritual that culminates in the designs of the three intruders. I loved the cinematography, as well as the framing. The editing provides a smoldering feel that builds to an inferno.
BARBARIANS features a tremendous cast with the four principals, Iwan Rheon, Tom Cullen, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Inès Spiridonov. Iwan is best known for his role as Ramsey Bolton in “Game of Thrones.” Tom Cullen is recognizable from his work on “Downton Abbey, among other roles. Catalina Sandino Moreno appeared in “Falling Skies,” “American Gothic,” and is currently in “From.” This cast is such an intricate interplay of performances, the dynamic of them together, as well as what they reveal when alone, is a driving palate that feels like a doubles tennis match that transforms into a wrestling free for all when the intruders show up.
Charles Dorfman’s BARBARIANS is a masterful orchestration of elements that plays out like a macabre opera. The ambiguity as to the core of this narrative and engrossing characters keeps the viewer riveted. There are moments in the film that had a shock and awe that elicited emotions similar to that of Kubrick's “A Clockwork Orange.” These characters are placed in an environment where, eventually, their inner “Alex” emerges and chaos ensues. There are other moments in the production designs where you might feel Dorfman paying homage to Kubrick’s film. However, the narrative employs current events and issues to explore how violence and sadism, our animal instincts, can be unleashed from our nature during an “idyllic” evening. Again, BARBARIANS a tour de force that leaves the viewer with much to ponder.
CAST: Iwan Rheon, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Tom Cullen, Inès Spiridonov, Will Kemp, and Steve Saunders CREW: Director/Screenplay/Producer - Charles Dorfman; Producers - Jason Newmark & Laurie Cook; Cinematographer - Charlie Herranz; Score - Marc Canham; Editor - Tommy Boulding; Production Designer - Chris Richmond; Costume Designer - Tina Kalivas; Makeup Designer - Chloe Edwards; Visual Effects Producer - Joe Carhart. Maló | I Believed | (An experiment in performance)
The first in an ongoing experiment in performance. Maló performed this song for 2.5 hours on repeat which made for approximately 30 takes straight with very little breaks (only to change batteries or cards) David Foulkes, our DP, was also, insanely, handheld throughout.
The idea is that through pure repetition self consciousness starts to retreat, sweat starts to form and you start to replicate the performance you might get on an hour into a long set. Music video sets are not the most natural space for an artist to sing - usually you get the obvious "less is more" approach - frankly I find this a bit lifeless and safe - we wanted to do the opposite and go for a performance that was real, live - sometimes touching sometimes aggressive... and completely unknown.
I have noticed with artists that there's a lot of other "stuff" going on at a video shoot - Make Up, Managers, Label, Crew, stopping and starting - a lot of stuff to get over before an artist would truly start letting go of the fact they were on a video shoot.
I've always thought how difficult it must be to replicate that "1 hour into a set" feeling that an artist must get.
I also noticed on previous shoots that If you go again for another take straight away, don't cut the take, just keep rolling again from the top AND do that again by the 3rd time an artist is properly warmed, a little sweat forms and some special things start to happen .
So this video is the first in a line of experiments with how far you can push that idea - keep repeating the performance again and again - no breaks where possible, only to change cards or batteries and thats it... keep going...keep going...

Seed planted: Arsenal’s summer decision is already proving to be a masterstroke - opinion
At first glance, the last few months at Arsenal have been nothing short of frustrating.
Suffering defeat in the Europa League final meant they were lumped with a measly transfer budget and left facing yet another season without Champions League football.
And because of that, they’ve struggled to complete deals for both Wilfried Zaha and Kieran Tierney.
The former is valued at £80m by his club whilst it seems as though a transfer involving the latter is again hitting a stumbling block as they line up a third bid.
Yet, on the basis of pre-season, there are positives, not least in beating Bayern Munich and drawing with Real Madrid.
However, it was a particular contingent of players whom featured in those wins that suggest a huge summer change at Arsenal is already paying off.
Earlier in the off-season, the Gunners decided to promote Invincible Freddie Ljungberg to the senior coaching staff, a role that would help to bridge the gap between first team and youth team football.
After the way Steve Bould had struggled to have an impact, this was a welcome change to the coaching setup as he stepped down to help with the academy.
In a summer when Arsenal were always going to struggle to land big money targets, the Swede is helping to pave the way for a new team, one reinvigorated by youth, something we’ve seen in pre-season.
Eddie Nketiah, a player who has found it difficult to achieve first-team minutes, is already reaping the rewards after scoring against Bayern and Fiorentina, whilst we’ve also seen goals from Joe Willock and James Olayinka.
The latter is unlikely to be known by many around the club but he burst onto the scene with a cleanly struck goal from outside of the box against Colorado Rapids.
The midfielder is a talent who is very much understated having never appeared in the first team before pre-season.
But that’s the difference Ljungberg is making, and in the process of helping the stars of tomorrow achieve a quicker and more efficient route into the first team, he could help save the Islington club money in this market and indeed in further windows too.
Another talent in Robbie Burton has also enjoyed his first taste of senior team football in America. He, unfortunately, missed a penalty against Madrid in the shoot-out but he’s looked cool and composed in the middle of the park.
He wasn’t even a player Unai Emery was aware of, though. During pre-season, he told The Telegraph: “Above all he [Ljungberg] is helping us with the young players because he knows better than us every young player.
“For example with Robbie [Burton] – I did not know Robbie. Freddie said to me that he is a good player with the capacity to play as a six or an eight.”
It’s refreshing to see someone so familiar with the young players involved with senior team matters and that should only benefit the Gunners going forward.
After all, Ljungberg has been inundated with praise during Arsenal’s stay in the US.
Talented winger Bukayo Saka, who earned his first-team debut last term, had the following to say about the Arsenal legend: “Freddie helps Unai know who we are, tells him our strengths and weaknesses and comes to us individually and tells us what we need to do from Unai.
“It makes the transition from the academy to the first team much smoother.”
Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below
Saka is one of the trailblazers in this Arsenal side. He racked up 14 goals and 12 assists at youth level in 2018/19 and with Emile Smith Rowe looking as though he could depart on loan, there could be an opening for the teenager.
Nonetheless, he is another player to have his say on Ljungberg, telling Football London: “It’s a bit surreal working with a legend like Freddie”
That is indicative of the level of respect the former Sweden international commands in north London.
He is a player who had a wonderful influence during one of the greatest periods in Arsenal’s history, so it’s no surprise to see the younger players hold him in such high regard.
With Ljungberg the foundations are being laid for a greater future, one which could help to banish the memories of losing talented individuals like Serge Gnabry and Chris Willock to teams abroad.
Arsenal’s seed has now been planted. How it grows will be fascinating to see, but at the moment, it looks like budding into a bright pink rose, rather than your common garden weed.
So far, this has been a masterstroke from the Gunners.
