WIP: The Gilded Cage, chapter 9

Hi I promise I’m not dead, here’s a sneak peek of the upcoming chapter of The Gilded Cage. Enjoy!

“There you are!”

Bill pounced on Rachel, constricting slender arms around her waist. In this embrace, Rachel truly felt like a fool for avoiding her wife. She’d missed Bill’s affections; missed being held tight and the certainty she was adored above all else.

“You’ve been cooped away for weeks, Fordsy,” Bill chided, “all alone in that musty library! I’m still a superstar as always, but even I get lonely from time to time!”

“Forgive me, my dear,” soothed Rachel. She swallowed down any concerns about nightmares and sleepwalking, and placed a kiss on Bill’s cheek. “I’ve put all my energy into translating those diaries you gave me— I think I’ve found something of great significance! She seemed to have moved on from her development of the philosopher’s stone and began dabbling in the creation of a homunculus—“

“No, no, no, not another word about work,” said Bill playfully. She pressed the small of Rachel’s back, guiding her towards the dining room. “I think I’m finally getting the hang of this cooking thing! I made us dinner; it might even be edible!”

Once they were through the door, they were welcomed by the warm perfume of cooked, well-seasoned meat. Rachel was overwhelmed by just how hungry she was as she took the seat Bill had pulled out for her. A vase of hothouse lilies, vibrant as a bonfire, served as a centerpiece between two cloched dishes; resting at the foot of the vase was a box of chocolates.

“A late Valentine’s gift,” said Bill, “a little treat for after the entrées. Bon appetit!”

Oh how Rachel missed Bill’s company! It felt just as it was back on the train: just the two of them basking in the glow of each other.

Rachel found an unusual meal waiting for her: a dark meat cut into slivers over a bed of greens and sautéed onions.

“Is this game? I don’t recognize this cut of meat,” Rachel asked. Bill winked and tapped her nose.

“Correct as always,” said Bill with a wide smile, one that revealed each shining tooth in her red mouth. “It’s venison— deer heart to be precise! Give it a try!”

Rachel’s own smile faded as a creeping dress began to spread through her body. She had eaten offal before, for years her family’s main protein had been beef liver and tongue. Fee’s own family often served game when she had been over for dinner. However, the chopped remains of the heart only made her think of that terrible nightmare. She never told Bill about it, so of course she couldn’t have known, but all Rachel could see was rivulets of coagulated blood on Bill’s mouth, those pearly teeth shredding Susan’s still-throbbing heart.

Keep it together. Rachel had already scared off Fee, and she was certain Polidori considered her mad. She couldn’t allow herself to lose Bill, her last true companion.

“As for me,” Bill continued, “I was feeling more like poultry, so I tried my hand at Ortolan!” She whipped the cloche off her plate, revealing the pitiful carcass of songbird, plucked and fried in its own fat.

“They say you’re supposed to cover your face when you eat it,” said Bill conspiratorially, “something about hiding your shame from God or whatever? Ha! What a fat load! We’re already eating meat, what does it matter how cruelly it was slaughtered? Well, anyway…”

Bill grabbed the bird by the neck, and Rachel kept her gaze down at her own meal, not wanting to witness what happened next. She knew she would be sick if she watched Bill eat the bird whole. A shame she could still hear the crunch of little bones cracking under teeth.

Rachel picked at her dinner methodically, hoping that if she just cleared her plate, she could excuse herself and retreat back into the library. After finishing the last bite of butter greens and coppery meat, she quickly said “Thank you for dinner—“

“Running off already,” Bill pouted, “come on kid, you haven’t even had dessert yet!” She slid the box of chocolates across the table towards Rachel.

Hesitantly, Rachel opened the box, revealing an assortment of truffles molded into odd shapes. They resembled some of the runes found within the Alchemical diaries: Rachel could spot shooting stars and wide mouthed fish among the assortment, all surrounding Bill’s favorite pyramid symbol.

“They’re bespoke, baby! I had them shipped in from Switzerland!”

“How generous,” said Rachel politely.

“Eat up Sixer,” said Bill, who then stood up from her chair.

“Would you like any,” asked Rachel, confused.

Bill laughed maniacally, shaking her beautiful golden head in dissent.

“Nah, I’ve got a different dessert in mind…”

Not sure if anyone is gonna care about this as much as I do, but I’m throwing it out into the MMFD Fandom ether here on Tumblr just in case.

So…Let’s discuss: My Mad Fat Diary character Zodiac Signs✨

I’ve done a bit of research (aka rewatching certain episodes lol) and some of their signs are confirmed:

Izzy is a Cancer (her birthday is near/on July 10th according to S1E1 when Rae meets the gang for the first time and Izzy is celebrating her 16th birthday at the pub)

Rae is a Sagittarius (she says this in S1E2)

Archie is an Aries (Rae says this in S1E2)

Chloe is a Scorpio/Sagittarius Cusp (her 17th birthday party in S2E5)

And I have a theories about what Finn and Chop might be but I can't recall if there’s ever been anything confirmed or any proof in the show...does anyone else have thoughts/theories or am I the only one that thinks about these types of things when I'm rewatching the show for the Nth time/reading or writing fanfic lol 🤪

you know something I wish more fiction had? characters who are funny in canon. and by that I don't mean comic relief characters who are funny to the audience, I mean characters who are deliberately characterized as funny people, who crack jokes and make other characters laugh in the proccess. I feel like there are a lot of snarky/sarcastic characters in fiction, which is fine, but they're always cracking jokes for the benefit of an invisible audience and no one around them seems to ever genuinely enjoy their quips (I also think most of these quips are inserted to make viewers laugh and not characterize the character saying them, so it risks becoming a Joss Whedon-style thing where, because every character is constantly going around saying funny and witty things, none of them come across as particularly funny or witty). There's nothing wrong with this style of writing but I guess I just wish we had more "class clown" types of characters. In real life I feel like funny people are very easy to find but you rarely come across them in fiction, and it's just a personality that I wish I saw in stories more often.

The second chapter of Flower in a Hailstorm is done! I really enjoyed writing this one, I hope you’ll like it! As promised, there is a Finn/Rae reunion, and the gang get back together for an early Christmas celebration.

Summary

Rae is a young teenage girl struggling with mental health issues. Having spent time in a psychiatric institute, she comes out and tries to make connections with her friends and family. However, her friends are unaware of her stay in hospital and life doesn't always go her way.

Thoughts

My Mad Fat Diary Season 2 follows Rae after she revealed her mental health issues to her friends. Her friends are accepting and understanding. She is in the perfect relationship with Finn. Kester has moved her from one-on-one therapy session to group therapy. And college is starting. What can possibly go wrong?

Of course, if you had been through My Mad Fat Diary Season 1, you would know despite the extreme limited number of episodes, everything will go wrong eventually.

Plot

I really do not know how I feel about this second season. I enjoyed it, I know I liked it, but did I love it as much as season 1? I doubt so. I had teared up so much in the previous season, the lack of tears in this second season was rather weird to me. I really only almost teared up during one episode and I think it was the last episode. I guess it’s because season 2 was a repetition of season 1, just with somewhat different problems, that’s all.

I am just grateful the last episode was written that way. I would not be able to forgive the writers if the gang was not back together. Or Rae’s relationship with Kester was as rocky. Or Rae’s relationship with her mother and stepfather remained hostile. So, thank you.

Cast (characters, character development and cast’s acting, etc.)

Let’s begin with Rae Earl. Once again, Sharon Rooney did a marvellous job acting as Rae. Rae’s character went on a roller coaster ride for character development this season. Within those few episodes, I went through phases of like, dislike, annoyance, indifference and admiration for Rae. Ultimately, she is still a Queen character and I love her vulnerabilities. If I had watched this show earlier on in my life, I might have been a better friend to some of my past friends...

So, that one episode where we focused Chloe Gernell? The episode finally gave me ease for liking this character from the beginning. Sometimes, people need to know that everybody goes through difficult times. There will come day when even the happiest or cheeriest person goes through a dark path and be overwhelmed with pessimism. With Chloe and that one episode, it shows it all. It also shows that, someone who very obviously is suffering from mental health issues can become very ignorant to the people around them. Not that it’s their ill intent because usually there is no ill intent, but thanks to Chloe’s story, now I know to be more aware of people around me. Her story teaches a strong lesson that many tend to neglect and Jodie Comer did an amazing job showing it onscreen.

I do love the other people in the gang but there isn’t much to discuss here based on season 2. Finn is barely around. Izzy is here and there but not very significant. I missed Chop in season 2 but I am glad he had a big moment when he stood up for Archie, the definition of better late than never indeed. As for Archie, well, it’s season 1 all over again with him. And the new characters? I did not like a single one at all, especially Liam. So yeah, I’ll leave this here.

Conclusion

Like I said, if only I had learnt about this TV show earlier than I did.

Any of you who stumbled across this review and had not watched the show, I strongly suggest you do it. It can seriously change you into a better person.

I'll always be tearing up a bit at Rae's and Chops friendship, he's like the older brother she never had. Concerned for her yet not overbearing. And can we please appreciate the fact that he was the first to clap after her confession at her mums wedding! He doesn't treat her like a fragile broken bird, but like a strong surviver she's always been!
