Over The River, Through The Woods…

Fluff + Faeries

Prompt 1:  In a fit of rebellion, a naive royal flees from the castle and into the woods. They stumble upon a faerie who, against all they’ve ever been taught, seems rather…kind. 

Necessary Criteria: “Anyone can do a good thing if they try.” / “Well…how often do you try?”

Prompt 2: Fae don’t often leave their villages, except to gather. Unfortunately, one foolish faerie has found themself entangled in a trap left behind by a human hunter. Even worse, the human has returned to see what they’ve caught; although, they seem far more curious than hostile. 

Necessary Criteria: One of the characters teaches the other a new word in their native tongue. 

Magic Begins In Superstition, And Ends In Science…

Angst + Alchemy 

Prompt 1: The job of an alchemist’s apprentice is rarely an easy one. Magic is a fickle mistress, after all. When the apprentice’s companion tries to pull them away from their work, the argument gets heated, until the pressure becomes too much and causes an intense explosion…literally. 

Necessary Criteria: “You’re not even smart enough to understand what I do, and you think you get to tell me when to stop working?!”

Prompt 2: The alchemist’s work is starting to consume them. Blinded by their pursuit of knowledge, they recklessly decide to slip a bit of their newest experimental concoction into their companion’s meal without their knowledge. The alchemist convinces themselves this is all for the greater good, and surely nothing all that bad could happen, but soon comes to regret it. 

Necessary Criteria: A horrible transformation. 

The Tongue May Be Twice As Sharp And Thrice As Lethal As The Blade…

Smut + Swords 

Prompt 1: A rivalry between two swordsman gets a bit out of hand when the pair decide to make a salacious bet over a duel: whoever loses must play submissive to the other, starting from the moment they drop their sword. 

Necessary Criteria: “Don’t think I’ll surrender that easily.” / “Mm, I didn’t think you would…I like it so much more when you’re fiery.”

Prompt 2: A courageous knight rescues a royal from the clutches of peril, and their majesty simply can’t let their hero leave without thoroughly rewarding them for such bravery. 

Necessary Criteria: The pair narrowly avoid being caught in the act. 

Cursed Is The Man Who Dies, But The Evil Done By Him Survives…

Horror + Hexes

Prompt 1: Foolish explorers accidentally wander into a witch’s garden. One of them can’t resist plucking a berry from a bush, not giving it a second thought as they swallow it down, only for the horrific consequences of a curse to start taking form the next day. 

Necessary Criteria: “Please…you have to tell me you know how to make this stop.” 

Prompt 2: While treasure hoarding is generally frowned upon among honorable bounty hunters, some simply can’t kick the habit. This quickly proves to be a terrible mistake, though, as a cursed trinket starts to warp its owner’s mind and plunge them into a darkness that turns them on the one they love most. 

Necessary Criteria: Creative use of an everyday object as a weapon.

Salty i wanna get into Baki which one do you recommend,the manga or the anime?

Oh you just woke up the fucking beast (I'm so sorry).

I LOVE this question, and as a recent Baki fan myself, I can tell you that getting into the series as a Western consumer can be rough if you don’t have a basic guide to know what you’re getting into…. so that’s what I’m gonna make this post (TEEHEE).

This series has gotta be one of the most insane shonen- actually no- one of the most INSANE PIECES OF FICTION I've ever experienced, and I NEED more people to check it out. Like, LOOK AT THIS SHIT DUDE.

Baki out of context somehow even puts Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to shame. The way I usually pitch it to people is that Baki is as insane as people THINK Jojo is before they read it. Shit is just... MAN LMAO. OBAMA IS FUCKING IN THIS.

Unlike more popular stuff like Dragon Ball and Hunter x Hunter, a lot of this series has just never been officially localized, so knowing where to start, and even how to support the series, is a hard task if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Thankfully THAT’S WHAT YOU HAVE ME FOR. This Tumblr post is gonna be your one stop shop for how to get into Baki as an English speaker (and it’ll give me some space to ramble about one of my latest favorite series).

But uh before we get into the nitty gritty, wanna put some trigger warnings for the series for those who may want to know. Listen, I know how some of these are gonna look to the average person, but this series just be like that sometimes, if you can’t take stuff like this trust me it’s insanely valid. You’ll understand if you choose to take the plunge.

SERIES TRIGGER WARNINGS:

Animated Blood/Violence, some animated gory imagery, Incest (???), Nudity, Urine stuff, Bigfoot/Animal Violence, Death, Uncomfortable looking muscles, and one instance of sexual violence (offscreen)

If you are comfortable with all that (and again, valid as fuck if you aren’t) then let’s talk BAKI!

First off, Manga or Anime?

You would think that either would be fine, but my personal recommendation for Baki as a beginner, is to watch the anime over reading the manga. Simply put: The anime is a lot more widely available and accessible in English speaking territories, and is fairly easy to support officially with its current iteration.

For whatever reason, the manga just never really took off in the West when compared to other series, so it was only ever officially released in English a handful of times, and they only ended up publishing the first few volumes. Theoretically, you can read the first few books to start, but the entire series all together is legit longer than One Piece at a whopping 1,203 chapters, so you are gonna run out of material real quick. The fraction of officially available manga barely scratches the surface of the series.

Even if you’re stubborn about reading the manga and want to try reading fan translations, they come with their own separate batch of issues. Plenty of fan scans you can find online range from wildly outdated, to generally being poor quality at best. There’s even some fan translations that just straight up make shit up and don’t even properly translate the original script. Adding in extra dialogue and slurs randomly to make the text seem way edgier than it actually is.

Full disclosure, I wanna cut through my bias here and say that there are indeed some great scans available on the internet if you look hard enough, especially for the more recent content! But they aren’t super easy to track down with how the series is formatted, and you may accidentally find yourself reading the story out of its proper order.

The watch/read order of Baki is a bit of a toughie for new people, but is actually pretty simple once it’s explained. The story of Baki is split up into multiple different series, kind of similar in format to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Though instead of “Parts”, Baki is split up into completely different manga and TV series. This is why many fans get confused initially, especially with the watch order, because it isn’t laid out in an easy to understand way at first glance.

The most well known series are currently streaming on Netflix, but those aren’t the ones you wanna start with. Nope, the story of the Baki anime actually starts way back in 2001, in a TV show that isn’t streaming officially online. Now if you want to watch out of order, I’m not gonna stop you. You can do whatever you want, by all means, but you’re gonna be missing some VERY important story context, and some characters just won’t hold the same weight.

So if you DO want to watch in order, come with me my friend. Let me show you-

BAKI’S SUPER COOL AND NOT AT ALL CONFUSING WATCH ORDER:

Baki the Grappler (2001) (24 episodes)

This is the original 2001 anime adaptation, the very start of serialized Baki anime. You’re gonna wanna start here trust me.

This series isn’t streaming anywhere officially online, but you can find it… places. Seek it out, trust me, because otherwise you’re gonna pay way too much for out of print DVDs on Ebay. Thankfully though you have options! The series is both subbed and dubbed (as well as every series I discuss from this point forward.

This show is the very start of serialized Baki anime, the very beginning of Baki Hanma’s story. Although it’s not in the way you may think. Despite this being the earliest point in the Baki timeline, it’s actually an adaptation of a later story arc from the manga.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Didn’t you just say this is where I should start? Why is it adapting something from later in the story?”, and yeah it’s valid to be confused. While yes this is the first ever Baki anime, for some reason the staff behind it made the decision to move this later arc up a bit from the original manga. In my honest opinion, I feel like this is actually a great decision.

As you will see as you watch, this honestly FEELS like this should be where the story begins. The escalation of power and storytelling from this point onward feels very natural, and you won’t miss out on anything or spoil yourself whatsoever on later events.

This is the de facto best starting point.

Grappler Baki Maximum Tournament (2001) (24 episodes)

This is effectively the second season of Baki the Grappler. For whatever reason they decided to title it something else, and while this is the norm for the series later on, this name change is weird because it adapts an arc from the original manga just like the first season of anime I just talked about.

Whatever lol.

Anyway this series, much like the previous, isn’t officially available as of now. So your best option is to SEARCH for it. SEARCH on the INTERNET. Or y’know. The good ol’ expensive out of print DVD on Ebay route.

In my opinion, compared to the first season, this one feels a bit slower paced and a bit of a slog at points but HOLD STRONG TRUE BELIEVER. This season is the introduction to a lot of mainstay characters in the series. Many of which you will come to love, even if you don’t know it yet.

BAKI (2018) (39 episodes) (NETFLIX)

This is the modern adaptation of Baki. After the last series ended in 2001, the anime went on hiatus for 17 years before it was announced that it would be coming back with a modern coat of paint.

Contrary to what you may think, this isn’t a ground up reboot. It’s a continuation of the exact point they left off years ago, right after the Maximum tournament. The only thing that kind of sucks about this is that, at least for the English dub, they replaced most of the voice cast. Most of the new VAs do a great job, however you may need to get used to Yujiro Hanma having Shadow the Hedgehog’s modern VA from the games haha.

Thankfully, you can officially support this series easily via Netflix. Normally I’m pretty eh on Netflix as of late, but this being the only way you can support the show officially in the west, I personally recommend it.

Baki Hanma (2023) (39 episodes) (NETFLIX)

This is the most recent anime! It’s also on Netflix.

Me and my friends just got to this on our watchthrough together.

Anyway, this is my list! If after you catch up you wanna hop into the manga and read the fan scans, I’ve heard that you can start on Baki Hanma/Baki Son of Ogre (chapter 183).

She brought you back an Otome game.

She had gotten you into them at first, sucking you in with The NIFLHEIM and Obey Me: One Master to Rule Them All.

They were fun. The storylines were moving, the artwork was great and the characters were lovable!

So when she held this new one in front of you, you had a feeling this one was going to become your new obsession.

It was based off of the anime Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, an anime that you loved to sit down and watch. You found it entertaining that no matter what, foolishness seemed to follow the Joestar Bloodline. So you were excited to play this game based around it.

“Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure…Love is Unbreakable. Hey, it's a play on one of the season’s names too!” (B/F/N) says and you nodded along. You turned the box over on the back to read the description.

‘Play along as your own character in the different stories from the hit Series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure! “What is your name?” Her voice was sweet, you hurriedly typed in your name and you watched as her eyebrows furrowed together before her smile returned.

You stared as Melody explained each plot line and how you would fit into it. She pointed to each one and showed the available routes and the ‘difficulty’ level of the romanceable characters.

“Of course all the villains are hard…but that's not going to stop me!” You say excitedly and it was almost like Melody was giggling at you. You brushed it off as she continued to speak.

“Oh and don’t worry! I’ll be alongside you in every story! If you ever want to know something  or you get stuck!” She smiles at you and shows the various looks that she’ll have between each series. From having her own ancestors in Parts 1 and 2, to being similar to Jotaro and being in 3, 4 and 5. 

Though you kept getting the feeling that Melody was something more, you got a little Doki Doki Literature Club or John Doe type vibes from her.

“Tch. I doubt this game is going to be sentient. If so I would feel so bad for you Melo.” You said giving the tutorial character a nickname. You could’ve sworn you saw her blush and avert her eyes, before quickly returning to her idol animation.

This is Project Ask the Crusaders of Stardust! An ask blog dedicated to the main cast of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. What can you and can you not expect from this blog? For one we will not have a set schedule for posting. "We" is right, we're two people running this blog. Namely @starplatimoon (Mod Moon) and @kuttblueberry (Mod Blueberry). We're very passionate about these guys and the story of part 3, and we have our own AU and RP we will pull inspiration from when it comes to moving the story forward on this ask blog. So expect the unexpected when it comes to what may happen... We will both be drawing and writing for this blog, but one of us may have more responsibility for writing certain characters than the other. Specifically, Mod Blueberry writes more for Joseph, Avdol, and Kakyoin while Mod Moon writes more for Jotaro and Polnareff. It's just the way we like to do it. This blog is fully a collaboration! We'll be putting credit where credit is due at the end of posts, we may forget sometimes or simply choose not to, however. There may be room for ships such as Avpol and Noritaro to develop down the line. And while that may be the case, we don't want this blog to revolve around ships, but the character's general dynamics and story! And to just goof off and have fun. That too. While the blog is "sponsored by the SPWF" and you're welcome to commit to the bit, you really don't have to pretend to be a newbie SPWF employee. Treat this like you would any other ask blog, there are no rules in that regard. But we will be touching on actual rules for a TOS at the end of this post that we implore you to check out before interacting with this blog or sending asks! And lastly, roleplay-themed asks and magic anons (AKA stand users) are allowed but we might not indulge in it regularly. Day 10 - Body Swap

Fandom: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Character(s): Enrico Pucci

Type of Request: 31 Days of Oc-Trope-R

Note(s): I never write for Pucci (mostly because no one requests him) so it was definitely interesting to try and come up with an idea for this prompt with him.

When Pucci woke up, he was not expecting to see himself in anything besides his priest garb. He felt different upon waking up and looking around the room, he knew something had happened. An enemy stand user is what first came to his mind, one with a disk he hasn't collected.

Pucci gets up and moves to find a mirror, wanting to see exactly what happened. He can look at his hands and clothes all he wants to know that this body isn't his, but he wants to see the face to try and use it to return to himself.

For a split second, he wonders if this is a test. If this is another trial he has to go through to reach heaven. Pucci looks into the mirror and sees a face he doesn't recognize.

So he goes about, finding means of identification. He tries to find information about this person that he is currently occupying. The more he learns, the more curious he is to why they were chosen for his mind to wake up in. He doesn't find any relation to the Joestars or DIO while searching which makes him more intrigued and curious. And then the phone rings.

He answers and hears a different voice from his come out, but he supposes that makes sense. On the other side of the line, he recognizes his own voice and a small smile crosses his face at the idea that you decided to just call yourself to learn information.

You seem to be as much in the dark as he is. Unfortunately, since he can't see your face, he doesn't know how much of your confusion is for show. But he chooses to trust you for now.

May I ask you How to come up with a name for your comic book when nothing useful comes to mind. 😞

This is a good question, I’m not a professional by any means, but I’ve managed to accumulate a good amount of knowledge from having my own trouble with this

This is a very subjective choice, some people choose to name it after their main character, see BBC’s Sherlock or Enola Holmes.

Some do that but add another bit that either describes the story or the side characters, see Percy Jackson and the Olympians or Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Some are named after the main group, see Animorphs or The Avengers

Some are a title that hints at the main character, see Monkie Kid, The Great Mouse Detective or God of War

Some hint at what they’re doing, see my title, The 14 Year Journey

Some are eye catching and have you wanting answers on what the story is about, see Good Omens or Disco Elysium

And some are statements that speaks to the story itself, see Our Flag Means death

It really depends on that you as an author want to tell, what the tone of your story is, and what expectations you want to set for your readers with the tone of your title

Don’t be afraid to experiment and ask the people around you for opinions on what you’ve come up with. Whole at the end of the day it’s your story, sometimes asking other people’s opinions can get you a good perspective on your work. You got this!

Camillot: Good evening, everyone, apologies for being late.

Davis (in Scorpi's body, and speaking in a British accent): Oh, your highness, I believe you have come to choose what Fridays should air tonight?

Camillot: Indeed, I have. Tonight, in honor of Bennett's birthday, I believe it is best to show... um...

Chao (speaking in a not as good, but still decent, British accent): Well, what is it?

Camillot: Well, uh... um... I, uh... Maybe we could... n-no, not that...

Davis (confused): Yes, your highness?

Camillot: No, that wouldn't... er... maybe... errrrrrrrrrrrrrr-

Davis (breaks character; whispering): Camillot, just make a decision already!

Camillot: I-I'm trying. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh- OH, I got it!

Sorry this was rushed, I've been a bit... distracted by something...

As you can see, to celebrate Jeff Bennett's birthday, Camillot was invited to choose what aired during the night (at least once he arrived, which wasn't until 8:30pm).

Also, Johnny Bravo showed up to the main studio.

However, you may be wondering why Camillot is dressed in a king's robe, and what "Twisted World" is.

For that, I'm gonna need you to start calling me the King of Unoriginality because I'm almost never able to come up with my own ideas.

The Twisted World of Mixels was a 50-episode series set in a post-apocalyptic version of Mixel Land and Mixopolis, where Nixels have mysteriously become way more ravenous and deadly, resulting in many Mixels dying. Some survived, but they've either been corrupted or twisted (pun-intended), with a few going completely insane. The surviving Mixels have to band together to wipe out the Nixel race.

The series was technically based around an old idea from another user (who's name I will not say) called "Twisted Mixels", except everything that happened was real (we got better dw). I was actually a part of it all, which is why I was uneasy with Camillot's decision.

I'll talk about it more in December.

Secondly, Camillot's robe was from the series that aired after Twisted World ended, first named Mixels 2035, and was later renamed Mixels: The Golden Cure.

Inspired by a discontinued set of stories from Mixel Immigrant Arresto (formerly named Arrestso), this was a 15-episode miniseries that took place in the future, in which Flurr went insane after being presumably mistreated by everyone around him. In the process, he also causes everyone in Planet Mixel to start aging, so some young Mixels are now shown as adults (don't worry no sexual content is shown or implied).

If you anything from the original story (known as Cubit Ball Run), you'd know that certain elements in the show are directly taken from the anime Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (i.e. some Mixels having spirits known as stands, Flurr using a mask to turn himself evil, etc.).

With Camillot, he was aged heavily (as well as other Mixels), and is now an elderly king (who kind of sounds like Christopher Lee). He was given permission to wear the robe that he wore for filming of the scenes.

Adam wiped out the blood from his eye as he crawled out of the hole.

Blood. His blood. The first mortal blood in all of existence. And… it was in his eye.

These… these children had actually cut him. Hurt him, and more than once.

Physically, at least.

Spitting out a tooth, he caught sight of his reflection in a pool of sinner blood as he pulled himself up, clear as a cracked mirror, and it was a face (so normal, the sort he knew that no one could ever pick out of a crowd) he had not deigned to really look at in millennia gazed back at him. When had he last taken off his mask?

He felt his fingers dig into the ground as he looked up, looked at all of those who had dared to stand against God's Plan, against these exterminations. Sinners, Hellborn and that fucking princess the serpent's fucking spawn. He saw them, all… glaring at him, over the sound of angels dying.

Glaring. Angry, as if… he was in the wrong here!? AS IF HE WAS THE ONE BEING JUDGED!? He spat out a mouthful of gold blood. "You… don't look at me like that, you… you fucking sinners! At least end this! Kill me! You! You of all creatures don't get to just play the fucking mercy card!"

The spawn shook her head. "We're not going to kill you. Because we're not like you."

The world seemd to crack in the back of Adam's mind, and red flooded his vision. "Are… are you fucking serious right now? YOU!? YOU FUCKING THINGS ARE THE ONES JUDGING ME!?" He swept his bloody gaze over the sinners in the crowd. "NONE OF YOU WOULD EXIST WITHOUT ME! WITHOUT HER! Paradise… was lost! We lost paradise when those fucking serpents that this fucking princess of yours slithered out of… when they whispered in her ear! In my ear! And yet I still loved her, loved all of you, even after that first bite! We lived to let free will live on, when we could have (should have) just offed ourselves the moment Uriel slammed the gate in our faces! Our fault, but we did it out of love once it started rolling and… and then came THIS!"

He swept a bleeding hand out wide over the bloody sky, the Ring of Pride. "THIS IS WHAT YOU ALL CHOSE TO MAKE OF IT! YOU ALL CHOSE, and you keep choosing, over and over again! As above so below! Cannibals, rapists, liars, murderers, warmongers! And… and I'm the bad guy here!? You think I enjoy doing this!? I'm not the monster here! You think I want to keep killing my children, year after year after year!? And only because that fucking, smarmy serpent and his whore ASKED FOR THIS!?"

The spawn's eyes widened, and yet he could not take any satisfaction from even that, that her daddy had neglected to tell her about that little factoid.

Still, she rallied, that FUCKING LOOK back in her red eyes. "Then why are you the one leading this!? If you hate it… then you could just stop."

At that, Adam felt the rage slip out of him, crystalize into something cold. "Because I've gotten a lot of experience when it comes to disowning wayward children, you little freak. This… this is the bed you and all your little friends made. Don't start pointing fingers just because there are suddenly nails in the mattress."

Yeah, Adam learned a long, long time ago that actions have consequences, and it doesn't matter how much you regret them or wish things were different or whine and moan, you have to live with those consequences and carry on. This is a man who lost everything, not only for himself but for every single one of his descendants. Consumed by bitterness and guilt to the point where he can delude himself into thinking his actions against his wayward children are justified, enjoyable even, until confronted with his own misery and he snaps.

I can see it. Obviously, she's the child of his ex and his former 'boss' who conspired to ruin his life, but also the fact that she's so achingly, genuinely wholesome and good despite her heritage, while his son became the first murder victim and his other the first murderer.

I also would think Adam deeply hates Charlie for a number of reasons.

Charlie might even remind Adam of Abel, but in a way that only makes him hate her more.

Also Charlie could have been Adams kid,which has definitely got to sting.

Dear DUHRAGON BALL,

Is it just me or has the shtick of naming a majority of characters after food, objects, or other nouns in Dragon Ball become stale? I don't hate this aspect of the series, but I sometimes feel it is shoved down our throats whenever more characters are introduced with unconventional (unconventional to the audience, I mean) names.

It's like we get it, they're named after something we eat, drink, or use. HAHAHAHAHA

Maybe I'm missing context about this, and if so please correct me, but how would you feel if they stopped doing this naming process? Would it help for fans to relate to newer characters better if they had actual names than nouns? Would it actually go against the series as a whole because this aspect is part of its DNA? Would anyone actually care who is named what? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

It's a system. The story I always heard was that Toriyama implemented this as a way to come up with names for characters quickly. As time went on, he found it was also useful for remembering which characters were associated with each other.

Maybe I'm not the sharpest knife in the crayon box, but some of the names used in Dragon Ball are pretty oblique. It took me years to notice that "Nail" is taken from the word "snail", for example. It also helps that the names are often taken from non-Japanese words, then their spellings or pronunciations are garbled up a bit to make them less obvious.

Let's put it this way: What would you have them do instead? The next big villain shows up, and his name is Hiroshi Suzuki? John Smith? Or should they be given completely made-up names like Blorfonertz, or Xylortone? Why is this preferable?

In the end, names are just labels for characters, and if the characters become important enough, they transcend the connotations of their names. Frieza has become an iconic villain in popular culture, probably somewhere on the level of Lex Luthor, or the Joker. The fact that he was named after a household appliance didn't really matter in the long run, because the strength of the character changed the meaning of the name.

I once read that the reason James Bond was named "James Bond" was to give the character as dull and unassuming a name as possible. He's not Nick Fury or Flash Gordon, he's just some regular-ass dude, or so it seems. But over the decades, the name James Bond has become synonymous with flashy, sexy spy adventure. It's hard to think of the name without picturing a car chase. That's because of the character. Ian Fleming could have named him Bread Twofist and it still would have probably worked out that way.

For my part, I tried using Toriyama's naming systems in my own fanfic, and I found it pretty handy. Instead of trying to pick a name for a new character out of thin air, I could confine myself to certain topics and choose a word from those. And it might sound silly at first, but eventually I'd get used to the sound of it, and then it would just be second nature to use it. The same process happens with any name you choose for a character. But by doing it this way, I can save myself the indecision.

Hirohiko Araki has multiple naming systems for the characters in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Fashion designers and labels, musical acts and their songs, and sometimes he just straight up uses Japanese names. It seems gimmicky at first, but then the story gets rolling and you forget about it.

I think the issue you're having is that you're viewing it like an active attempt at humor. Like the Heeters have a guy named "Oil" and you're bored with it because it's just not that funny. But it's not meant to be a joke. It's just a little quirk in the writing, easily dismissed. If you just roll with it, it's not that annoying.

a/n: i have this idea i've wanted to write since last vday! basically a sort of CYOA, but it’s choose your own date. i just really wanted to write a multifandom blind date drabbles. these will be sfw, and not exceedingly long since i’d never get it done if that was the case LOL. i tried to keep it to seven of my fandoms, but motivation and time permitting, may add more fandoms? who knows. btw, this is just meant to be a silly thing LOL pls don’t take it seriously :))))

You, by all respects, lead a fulfilling life. You have a nice job, you’re doing well in school. You have a wonderful network of friends, and a supportive boyfrien—

Well. Scratch that last one. Maybe you don’t have all these things. Or even one of these things. Maybe you have none of these things. 

But that’s okay. It’s not like you’re dissatisfied with your life. It’s not like you love it either, but on a scale of 1 to 10, it would rank at least a five on most days. And that’s better than nothing, right? 

Right?

There’s a lot of things you can’t fix overnight, no matter how many pep talks in front of the mirror or pints of ice cream you devour on late nights, but your friend suggests a band-aid solution—it is the easiest thing to address, after all, considering just how many bored, single men exist in the world. A local dating app recently came out in your city, and the developers were kicking off its beta release with a February blind-dating event. It wasn’t even a day after she told of you about it that she was at your door, demanding she help you set up your profile on the app.

“But I’m not lonely,” you protest.

“I saw you crying at videos of puppies the other day,” she says, scrolling through your phone, before typing furiously. No doubt trying to spice up your profile. You wonder what light she’ll portray you in this time? The artistic recluse with an air of intrigue? The peppy optimist with a dark past filled with daddy issues? She’s definitely used that one before... “You baby-talk your pet goldfish.” 

“I like animals,” you say defensively. 

“All you do in your free time is binge telenovelas,” she continues, as if reading off a mental checklist she’d made of you. “You used to have those posters of cute boyband groups on your walls.”

“Shh! We don’t mention that stage of my life.”

“Mmhmm,” she says, swatting your hand away when you reach for your phone.

Your hand falls onto the couch as you groan. “I don’t wanna meet some weirdo though.” Your nose wrinkles at the memory of her past efforts at finding your next fling. “Remember that double date I went on with you?”

“He was a nice guy—” 

“He came straight out of prison! He brought his parole officer with him.”

She meets your gaze, nodding painfully. Yes, she did remember her date bailing only to be replaced by the parole officer. The two of you share a look before bursting into giggles. As the laughter recedes, she puts down your phone.

“But seriously—you’re going on that date.”

You sigh. “Dating is so hard, though. At least when I’m on my own, all I have to worry about is myself.” 

She squints. “Weren’t you wearing those sweats when I stopped by two days ago?”

You look down, examining with renewed interest at the crusted-over pizza sauce stain on your pants. "...Maybe?"

She sighs, putting down your phone. Reaching for your shoulders, she gives you a good shake. You can almost feel your brain rattling around—or maybe that’s the lack of sleep speaking. You blink, disoriented.

“Try it, please? Putting yourself out there might be a nice change of pace. You’ve been such a shut-in lately. Who knows—you might even enjoy yourself,” she says soothingly.

You consider it. You really do. Your plans for that week—and the week after, and the week after that—were the same really: stream shows all day, browse social media until your eyes burned from being glued to the screen, fall asleep with the lights on and starfished about your bed.

What was the harm in changing things up a bit? What could go wrong?

Truthfully, many things could. At least you might get a good story out of it, though. 

You sigh. "Fine. Let's do it." 

She cheers, drawing you into a hug. You pat her forearms awkwardly, attempting to slip your phone out of her lap discretely. She notices through, slapping her hand over yours. You frown. 

“So... who’d you set me up with this time?”

She purses her lips. "I can't tell.” At your look of confusion, she clarifies, “Because it's a blind date, no one's profile has their faces. It just has bios and pictures of random things."

“Random things?”

This time she hands you your phone, showing you the matches that have popped up. An assortment of items meet your view, underneath the prompt.

“Pick something that best represents your ideal partner."

You squint, clicking on random images to view the profiles. Hmm. While the bios give you some insight into their personalities, each image is oddly specific and gives away little of the appearance of the person you’d be going on a date with. 

"Well, the app has great ratings so far,” she offers, noticing your hesitation. “Plus, If they live here, they can’t be that weird, right?”

True... Ruling out the fact that you could accidentally be going on a date with a foot-licking creep. It wouldn’t be the first time.

You scroll through the images, pondering them.

A photo of someone tying their running shoes. The presentation is a little bland, but you are curious about these references to demons and devils. You are not sure if the location glitched, because why is he 666 km away…?

The eccentric cover of Prince’s 1999 album. Whoever wrote this seems to be flirty, confident—definitely someone who knows how to have a fun date. You’re curious about what his hair looks like, if he goes as far as to mention it.

c. darknight

An elegant photo: a bottle of… wine? grape juice? clutched by a gloved hand. Their bio is short and to-the-point. They seem to be someone who doesn’t like mincing words.

d. Prince of Silence

A traditional background, sakura petals scattering in the wind. The person must be one of aesthetics. Their bio is a simple haiku. You are a bit thrown off by the age though… surely, that must be a typo.

e. The Phantom Thief

A book with indecipherable text splayed upon a cluttered desk. It gives off the impression of long nights spent poring over readings. The bio is equally as intriguing—it seems this person is intellectual and enjoys philosophy.

f. infinitely cursed

A simple ring whose gemstone glints in the sunlight. An earnest bio—whoever wrote this seems to be the protective sort, if not somewhat lonely.

g. Speed of Sound.

You are… not sure what to make of this photo. Are those ninja weapons? The bio reads more like a listing for a hitman. Plus, who is this ‘Saitama?’

Ok. This one will take some time to think about and I want to come up with a few different examples because i've been on this hellsite for so long. And the thing about tumblr is that "you curate your own experience" so its really easy to NO WAIT I CHANGE MY MIND THE WORST TAKE I EVER SAW WAS FROM THE USSR FANDOM "Jews weren't persecuted in the USSR and everything you've heard about the pogroms was USamerican propaganda" which is just straight up wrong and historical revisionism.

Disco Elysium: Every single absolutely noteworthy bad discopost has been from the subreddit, which i do not look at. Therefore the only infamous tumblr take I can remember are the terfs who say nobody can be trans in Revachol. I think they should take a long walk off a short plank.

Guilty Gear: I see frequent bad takes from both the fandom and the fighting game community side of GG, but nearly all that shit is on twitter and reddit. (I'm not kidding when i say the GG subreddit has some of the worst moderation I've ever seen on a game subreddit. It's all shitposts and you cannot find any helpful information there. I can and WILL complain about horrible twitter takes all the time.) Anyway theres a gg confessions tumblr (i will not link it but its not hard to find) is an entertaining trainwreck. The worst take I saw there was "Sol, Jack-o, and Asuka would be the best polycule ever!" which is like. You had to have engaged with the story enough to come to that conclusion but you used absolutely zero brain cells in that thought processing. No critical thinking skills. You saw some pretty people on a screen and shipped them without listening to anything they were saying. (TL;DR One of Sol's defining characteristics throughout the entire series is that he wants to kill Asuka and not in a "hot rivalry way" but in a "you deeply and unforgivably betrayed my trust and bodily autonomy and that's not even the tip of the iceberg" kind of way.)

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: [Long, drawn-out pantomime of opening a bottle of whiskey, pouring a generous amount into a glass, and downing it in one go] It's not worth talking about in public.

Disco Elysium: To put it lightly, I do not think Kim would have anything more than a mere tolerance for Jean.

Guilty Gear: Everyone is wrong about Faust except for me and my friends. I'm writing this 30k word fanfic, and oftentimes I think "Is my characterization of Faust too serious? Am I making him too solemn? Like yeah, his combat is silly but otherwise he's very straightforward when he speaks." and then I look at his story dialogue and think to myself "No. It's the fanon's perception of him that is wrong." ALSO. Anyone saying that his characterization in Strive is "him returning to being a serial killer" will die by my hand. Regardless of his uncanny appearance now, mentally that's the best he's ever been in the whole franchise. FUcking fight me on it. I'll 214s->PRC->236h* your ass.
