In the days following his coronation, Liam worked tirelessly to assure the people of his country that, despite his unconventional decision, Cordonia would be stronger and more prosperous than ever under his leadership. The council had rebranded what was supposed to have been his engagement tour into an introduction tour, which would not only serve as a chance to begin solidifying alliances and good-will with other world leaders and political taste-makers, but a chance for him to show everyone just what King Liam’s Cordonia could be.
However, even with the nonstop calls, meetings and interviews, his mind couldn’t help but drift to Drake’s words.
I’m pretty sure it was obvious to everyone but you that she was into you.
You mean to tell me that you’re not even going to try?
He hadn’t planned on trying. He assumed that by turning down Maxwell’s invitation she wasn’t interested. But once again, he thought about what Drake said and considered Riley’s point of view. If he had been put in her place, he would have made the same choice. Maybe there was still hope.
Liam decided that before he began his tour, he needed to fly to New York and find her. He had spent months thinking about her, even if she wasn’t the one, perhaps it would give him some closure and allow him to move on. When his final meeting of the week was finished, he boarded the royal jet and made his way to the states.
When they landed, Liam requested that they go straight to the bar. He couldn’t wait any longer. As his SUV traveled the streets, his mind and heart were racing, thinking of all of the things he wanted to say, and reminding himself not to come on too strong, or get his hopes up too high.
The car slowed to a stop in front of the bar, and Liam’s head guard, Bastien, walked around the vehicle to open Liam’s door. The young king paused for a moment, taking  a deep breath to prepare himself. He was ready for a life full of deals and negotiations, he had been trained for it since childhood; but having to be open, and speak his heart was something completely foreign to him.
“Sir?” Bastien’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.
Liam nodded in acknowledgement and stepped out of the vehicle, moving toward the door. As soon as he stepped over the threshold, he was hit with the nostalgia of the last time he was there.
“Just a second.”
His breath caught in his throat at the voice calling from the kitchen.
She’s here.
His heart began racing as he neared the stools surrounding the bar. Just as he approached, Riley emerged from the kitchen, eyes trained on her notepad as she jotted something down.
She looked even more beautiful than he remembered. She kept her focus on the task in front of her as she walked past him and straight to a table, slipping the customer the receipt she had been writing on.
As soon as she turned around, Riley locked eyes with Liam and she froze in her spot. She wasn’t expecting to ever see him again.
“Hello, Riley.”
She stood in silence for another moment, trying to process the fact that Liam, the man she couldn’t seem to get out of her mind, was standing in front of him. “Hi Liam.” She managed to choke out.
Shaking off her surprise, she jumped right back into waitress mode. “Can I get you a table? Are your friends here with you again?” She paused for a moment, suddenly remembering what he had been doing in their time apart. “If you’re here with your fiancĂ©e, I can give you a quiet table in the back.”
“No, it’s just me this time.” He smiled at her. She didn’t know, she hadn’t been following the social season. He wasn’t sure whether or not that was a good sign. “I was actually hoping to speak with you, if you have a moment?”
“Oh, um
” She took a look around the bar. It wasn’t very busy, but there were customers that were going to need her attention. “Yeah, let me just check on a couple of tables. You can sit if you want.” She motioned to the bar. He nodded and took a seat on a stool.
After visiting each of her tables, and refilling a couple of glasses for the patrons at the bar, she stepped up to the spot where Liam was sitting. “Sorry,” she apologized. “Can I get you a drink?”
“No, I’m fine. Thank you.” He took a deep breath and searched her eyes, hoping for some kind of sign that she had missed him, or even thought about him once since he had left, but she had a wall up, he wasn’t even sure if she was happy to see him.
“So, how was your social season?” Riley asked, unsure what else to say.
“It was
eventful.” He mused. “My father officially stepped down from the throne.”
“Oh, wow. So you’re an actual king now?” Liam nodded. “Congratulations.” She noticed that Liam seemed uneasy about his sudden title change.
“I suppose. It was unexpected, and there was a lot behind it that made it a bit
bittersweet. But I knew I would end up here eventually.” He rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
“So how does your fiancĂ©e feel about the sudden fast track to queen?” She asked tentatively. She really didn’t want to hear about the woman he chose. She was probably smart, well spoken and gorgeous. Everything Riley felt she could never be.
Liam let out a breath, grateful that she brought it up first. “I don’t have a fiancĂ©e. I didn’t pick anyone.”
“But I thought you
”
“I was supposed to,” he took one of her hands in his, feeling emboldened by the moment and deciding to just dive in. “Riley, my whole life I’ve known I needed to put my duty to Cordonia above everything else. That included any ideas about romance, or marrying for love. As I went through my social season, I would try to weigh out my options, but my mind kept going back to our night together. I couldn’t pick any of those women because none of them were you.”
Riley stood in stunned silence, overwhelmed by Liams words, and the familiar, calming feeling of her hand in his. She felt him squeeze gently and she cleared her throat to compose herself. “I don’t understand.”
“I want to be with you, Riley.” It was a bolder statement than he intended to make, but he didn’t regret saying it.
She felt as though her heart was going to leap out of her chest, she still didn’t understand. How could this man, this king, this handsome, kind king have spent the last few months with women throwing themselves at him, and he’s standing here telling him he wants her. It didn’t add up.
“Riley?” His voice brought her out of her thoughts. She studied his expression, and noticed a vulnerability in his eyes.
“But
how would that even work?” She pulled her hand out of his and stepped back. “You’re on the other side of the world, the time difference must be insane.”
“It’s six hours,” He responded. “And I’m here now.”
“But not for long. You’re going to have to go home and rule a whole ass country. You honestly think you’re going to have time for me?”
Liam smirked, she was getting flustered, he took that as a sign that his feelings were returned. “The logistics can be figured out. And I will make time for you, no matter where I am, or what time zone I am in. You’re worth it.”
Riley’s brow furrowed in confusion. “How do you know?”
“Because I can feel it.” He replied, his eyes intently locked on hers. “Riley, there’s something between us. I felt it that night, it’s practically all I’ve thought about since we said goodbye, and I felt it again the second I walked through the door and heard your voice.”
“But
”
“Please,” he pleaded. “Just let me take you on one date. If after that, you can tell me that you truly don’t feel the connection, I will walk away and never bother you again.”
Riley didn’t need a date to know there was a connection, she was feeling everything he was. But she still had so many questions and doubts about the whole thing. The smart thing to do would be to say no, realistically, this would never work. All of the concerns that ran through her mind when Maxwell invited her to Cordonia came flooding back.
But did she want to do the smart thing? That’s what she thought she had done last time, and she’d been regretting it ever since. Riley had always played it safe and done the smart thing. She never took risks, and she was right where she had always planned to be. For the most part.
The hopeless romantic inside of her, the side she had silenced once before, was screaming at her to say yes. Love wasn’t logical, it wasn’t smart, it was a risk. Some of her favorite love stories included a visit to the seawich, trusting a fairy godmother, or taking a chance on seven strangers in the woods.
“Okay.” She answered softly, still unsure about where this would lead.
“Okay?” He repeated her hopefully. She nodded in response. “Wonderful!”
Riley smiled coyly at Liam’s excitement. “I’m actually free tomorrow night if that works for you?”
“Absolutely. I’ll pick you up at your apartment at seven?”
“Sure.”
Liam breathed a sigh of relief and stood from his barstool. “Perfect. You’re at the same address I walked you home to?”
“You remember?”
“Of course I do, I remember everything about that night.” He noticed a blush come over Riley at his response. “Maybe I could get your number though, just in case?”
Riley smiled, her eyes flitting to the floor. “Sure.” He handed her his phone, and she put her number into the contacts.
When she handed the phone back to him, his fingers lingered on hers for a moment before he pulled away, placing it in his pocket. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Riley watched Liam exit the bar, her eyes watching on the door until one of her customers called for her attention. She took a few orders and began mixing drinks, her mind drifting back to Liam and their conversation. She was nervous, terrified really, about going out with him. She couldn’t help but get ahead of herself, trying to figure out how a relationship with that much distance would work. Or why he would even want it to.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t notice Daniel enter the bar and come up behind her. “Holy shit,” Riley startled at his voice, nearly spilling the martini she had in her hand. “Sorry,” he smiled apologetically at his friend. “But it was important. You should have seen the smoke show I just passed on my way in here.”
Riley smirked to herself as she placed the drink in front of her customer and moved back across the room. She had a feeling she knew exactly who he was talking about. “Blonde hair, blue eyes, a little over six feet?”
“Yes, he was in here?!”
“That’s uh
” She picked up a rag and began wiping down the bar, avoiding eye contact with Daniel. “That’s Liam, the guy from the bachelor party.”
His jaw dropped. “Prince Charming?” She nodded with a small chuckle. “What was he doing here?”
Riley recapped the conversation for a stunned Daniel. She had given him a full rundown of their time together when she had returned to the apartment that night, but hadn't mentioned anything about him since. However, Daniel knew better than to think it was just a fleeting moment to her. He’d never seen her light up about anything, or anyone the way she did when she was recalling every last detail of Liam and their evening together.
“But you said yes, right?” Daniel asked hopefully.
“I mean yeah, how could I say no to all of that?” Riley shrugged. “But I don’t know.”
Daniel rolled his eyes. “Come on Ri, I get it, you’ve got this whole don’t see how great you are thing, and that’s your vibe. But seriously,” he placed his hands on her shoulders and looked her in the eye. “This man has already done more for you after knowing you for a couple of hours than your last boyfriend did all that time you were together. Take the hint. He wants you.”
“How does a relationship like that even work?” She continued to protest.
“First of all, it’s a date, not a relationship.” Daniel corrected her. “Second of all, if it gets to that, you figure it out. And then you invite me to your lavish royal wedding, because technically this is all thanks to me.” He winked.
“Alright, alright, I’ll go.” Riley chuckled. “What are you even doing here? It’s your night off.”
“I wanted to be your last customer.” He smiled, taking a seat at the bar. “I’ll have my usual, barkeep.”
***
The next day, Riley spent most of the morning rifling through her closet, trying to assemble the perfect outfit for her date with Liam.
“Daniel, help!”
Daniel rushed into Riley’s room to find clothes scattered over every inch of the space. “Holy shit Ri, what happened here?”
Riley looked up at Daniel from her seat on the floor, gripping onto two shirts. “What do grown ups wear on dates?”
“Oh Riley,” he dropped down on his knees by his friend’s side, wrapping his arm around her. “Just relax.”
“I can’t relax. I haven’t gone on an actual date in almost four years. I was just a kid. And this isn’t just a grown up date, it’s a grown up date with a king. Fuck,” her eyes went wide and she turned to face Daniel. “Am I supposed to wear a ballgown?”
He didn’t want to make her feel worse, but Daniel couldn’t help but chuckle at her panic. “I don’t think he’s expecting that.” He pried the shirts out of her grip. “Listen, he asked you out because he likes you, you don’t have to get all fancy. That’s what he turned down to come here to find you. Just be yourself, cute and comfortable.”
“But what if he’s taking me somewhere fancy? Guys like him don’t go to hole in the wall pizza places, or burger joints.”
“Or dive bars?” Daniel retorted with an arched brow. “You’re overthinking this. Here,” he reached behind her, picking up a green high low dress. “This is perfect. Wear it with that leather jacket you have. Classy and cool, you’ll be ready for anything.”
“Daniel, it’s perfect!” She wrapped her arms around him and brought him into a hug. “Thank you.”
“Of course, but listen,” he pulled back, looking at her with concern in his eyes. “You need to relax, you’ve got this. He asked you out, he flew halfway across the world for this date, safe to say he wants it.”
“That’s the problem,” she huffed, standing up and laying her dress on the bed. “He was supposed to pick a fiancĂ©e in his own county. He didn’t and then he came here, because of me. Do you have any idea how much pressure that is? He barely knows me.”
Daniel followed her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. “That’s what first dates are for.”
Over the next few hours, as Riley got ready for her date, Daniel made sure to be there to guide her back when she fell too deep down the rabbit hole of worry and self-doubt about how the evening would go.
She was putting the finishing touches on her look when her phone chimed. It was a number she didn’t have saved, but the second she saw the message she knew who it was. The butterflies in her stomach kicked into high gear, Liam had arrived. He didn’t have her apartment number, so he couldn’t ring them to be buzzed up. She gave him the number and called down the hall for Daniel to buzz him in.
Riley slid on her shoes and made her way down the hall, where Daniel was waiting in the living room. She gave him a nervous smile. “Do I look alright?”
“Like a princess.” Daniel grinned. She rolled her eyes, making Daniel laugh. “You’ve got this Ri, trust me.”
As the elevator made its ascent to the fourth floor, Liam’s fingers tapped nervously against his thigh. He had spent all day preparing for this, it needed to go perfectly. The doors opened, and he stepped into the hallway stopping in front of the door marked ‘11D’. He took a deep breath before lifting his fist and wrapping gently. The door opened, and Liam’s breath caught in his throat when he laid his eyes on her.
“Riley you look,” he paused, taking another moment to admire her from head to toe. “Stunning.”
“Thank you,” he caught the blush in her cheeks just before her gaze dropped.
They stood in silence, not believing that they were actually here. They had both imagined this moment, but neither thought it would ever be more than that.
“I brought you these.” Liam broke the silence, holding up a bouquet of roses. “I wasn’t sure what your favorite flower was, I hope roses are okay?”
Riley smiled, taking the bouquet from Liam and lifting them to her nose. “They’re perfect.” Liam let out a sigh of relief. “Let me just go put them in some water, I’ll be right back.”
While Riley was in the other room, Liam took the opportunity to look around the apartment to try to learn a bit more about her. The decor wasn’t exactly what he had pictured for her, and she didn’t appear to be in many of the photos. He found it curious.
“Ready?” Riley pulled him from his thoughts.
Liam smiled and offered his arm to her. “Absolutely.”
He led her out of the apartment and to the elevator. As the cab made its descent, the pair stood in silence, Liam noticed that Riley seemed nervous. He could understand that, he was nervous too, but there was also an uneasiness about her that concerned him.
“Is everything alright?” Liam asked tentatively, hoping the evening was not about to end before even getting started.
“Yeah,” she smiled up at him softly. He felt his heart flutter at the sight. “I’m just a little nervous is all.”
Liam grinned as the doors opened. “Understandable,” he raised his arm, signaling for her to exit the elevator. Once she stepped over the threshold, he followed behind her. “I’m pretty nervous too.”
“You are?”
“Definitely,” he assured her as they moved outside. He walked her to the SUV that was waiting in front of her building, opening the door for her. He slid in behind her and closed the door before continuing. “If we’re being candid, this is actually my first real date.”
Riley contorted her face into a look of disbelief. “Yeah, okay,” she replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“I’m serious!” He chuckled. “Growing up as part of the royal family, things were different. I was introduced to women, but our time would be spent at courtly functions. It was nothing like dating as you know it.”
Riley nodded in understanding, a brief silence coming over them. “As a matter of fact,” he continued. “I wanted everything to be perfect tonight, so I did some research on first dates.”
“You did?” She smiled. ‘That’s actually really cute.”
“I’m very glad you think so.”
“Well, since we’re having truth time,” Riley took a deep breath, and looked down at her hands, which sat in her lap. “I guess I’m just a little worried that after all this time, and after everything you did to come here and ask me out, I’m not going to be worth it.”
Liam’s heart sank at her confession. The last thing he wanted was to put any pressure on her, and he especially hated that she was worried she wasn’t enough. He realized in that moment that he may have come off a bit stronger than he anticipated when he had seen her the night before.
“Riley,” he said, gently placing his hand on her shoulder to comfort her. “I’m so sorry for putting that pressure on you. I assure you, while my feelings for you did have a part in the decision I made at my coronation, it wasn’t the only reason.”
He went on to explain his conversation with Leo, and how it had inspired him to forge his own path. He also told her about the conversation he had with Drake later in the night; leaving out the part about how obvious it was to everyone how she felt about him. She was already feeling insecure, he thought that would only make things worse. Instead, he told her that Drake suggested the best way to find his happiness was to go back to the last place where he felt truly happy.
“And you picked the night we met?” Riley asked.
“I did,” he smiled softly at her. “Riley, I can’t predict the future. I don’t know where this is going to go, if it goes anywhere at all. But what I do know is that when I was with you that night, I felt comfortable, free. It was something I hadn’t felt for a long time, and it meant a lot to me.”
Riley felt her cheeks get warm as she dropped her gaze to her lap. “It was a pretty great night, wasn’t it?”
“Absolutely, and that’s the only expectation I have for tonight. To have a pretty great night, with a pretty great girl.” He placed his index finger under her chin, tilting it so their eyes were locked.
Riley looked into his eyes and was met with a sincerity that gave her butterflies. At that moment, all of her questions and worries were gone; replaced by anticipation and excitement of what the evening, and the future, held.

Hey guys, just out of curiosity, what characters have what kind of accents when you read their dialogue in your head? For instance, who here reads Drake Walker's dialogue in some sort of accent? Or even King Liam? Or what about Hunter/Kayden? Beckett Harrington or Shreya Mistry? Other characters?

drake stans are so weird. they say that liam is doing what he’s “supposed to do as a husband.” it’s not like that though. throughout the series, he’s found ways to make the mc know his world is in the palm of her hand with gestures, sneaking out, and the kind words. he’s done so much, and expects nothing in return. he’s not doing what a “husband’s supposed to do”, he’s going beyond that. and some of y’all antagonise him in stories to justify for LI. how low do you have to go to make liam a shitty character. couldn’t be me.
but yes, drake “i hate nobles but was basically a noble that rolled in dirt for fun” walker is better. okay sis

I decided to restart The Royal Romance from the beginning again and it got me thinking. I’ve seen some people that bash Drake and hate on his relationship with MC and how it comes out of nowhere, or that Drake’s feelings for MC come out of nowhere. But replaying I’ve realized that it’s actually Liam’s that basically appear out of nowhere. I know that some people are going to disagree with me but just hear me out.. You can see how Drake slowly starts to care for MC and how he starts to develop feelings and then fall for her through their “moments in between.” Whereas with Liam I feel like it just happened right away. Like as soon as you meet he’s acting like he is in love already. You can especially notice it when you come to Cordonia. He just automatically cares deeply for you. I just don’t think that’s realistic at all. I feel like the way it happens with Drake is way more realistic than the way it happens with Liam. Drake falls for you slowly through spending time with him. Liam falls for you by just meeting you basically. Considering that even if you’re only romancing Drake and not spending any romantic time with Liam at all, he still proposes to you and is totally shocked that you wouldn’t say yes. So that’s just basically what I was thinking, I love Drake because the way he falls for MC is so sweet and realistic. Sorry for the long post!! 😜😘💕

-Sad-
Kristina's POV
Kristina stands at Daniel’s door giving him a tight hug. “Thanks for everything these last two months. Letting me stay with you, helping with a job that isn't back at the bar, and for understanding that I don't ever want to walk into that bar ever again.” As she steps back Daniel has a sly grin, “Someday Kris I’m going to get out of you why you hate the bar so much, well more than because the boss is ass. And why you won't let me set you up on a date. But all in good time though, Kris, all in good time I’ll get it out of you.” He playfully punches Kristina on her arm. “But seriously Kris, it is great having you back and I wouldn't hesitate to help you all over again.” Kristina gives him one more brief hug. “Well, off to my shoebox size apartment. Heh, probably not even shoebox size, maybe just the size of one shoe.” “See ya soon Kris!.” “Soon I’m sure, Daniel. Be sure to give my best to your new love.” Kristina pretends to swoon and Daniel rolls his eyes.
**********
The next morning Kristina bites the bullet and forces herself to go shopping for some new clothes for work. Daniel helped her get a pretty sweet hostess job at a swanky restaurant. I’m so glad as a hostess I don't have to wear any uniforms, but I need to step it up in my closet. The hostess is the first impression given at the restaurant. Not that her manager doesn't mention it to her every single shift. Sighing she heads out to the street in front of her building and hails a cab. Immediately once the cab starts rolling she is already regretting her decision, but she has put this off for as long as she can. Shopping without Maxwell. This is going to majorly suck. Waking up to my stupid alarm on my phone each morning hurts enough, so this should be just shitty.
Kristina had always loved shopping, and when adding Maxwell to the equation it was just about as entertaining as anything could get. Standing outside the strips of shops she sighs, then takes a deep breath and walks into the first shop. After hours of torture she's finally home with a decent start to a work appropriate wardrobe. She falls back on the quite small couch and surveys her kingdom. Heh, yes my palatial manor indeed. Without moving from the couch she looks into the “kitchen” with its sink, hot plate, and mini fridge, then into the “bedroom” which has a twin bed and just enough room for the tiny table holding a really, really small TV, and then into the bathroom which is barely larger than one in a camping trailer. But the apartment is clean, and in an okay-ish neighborhood.
She curls up on the couch and lets her mind wander
.
"Oh come on Kristina you can totally pull this off.” Maxwell throws the distressed skinny jeans and the colorful tube top at her. “ Maxwell, I know we're buying clothes for the few times there aren't planned activities, but I still don't think Bertrand would approve.” “Who cares, I’m sure the gang will take a night to sneak out and go to a club or something. We all had fun at Drake’s birthday outing, I mean even Drake did. Now go try it on!!!” He gently shoves her into the direction of the changing rooms. After a few minutes
“Ok, I’m coming out.” Maxwell is waiting and is almost giddy as he sees his masterfully matched ensemble. “See, told you! Looks fabulous on you, which means you're buying it.” Kristina stands at attention and mock salutes Maxwell as she heads to change back into her clothes.
As Kristina returns from the changing rooms to head to the cashier she sees Maxwell having his own little dance party to the music being pumped out of the store’s, not so fantastic, speakers. She smiles, makes her purchase, and heads over to him. “Okay, bought your masterpiece of an outfit, lets roll.” “But Kristina, this is one of my favorite songs!! We have to dance to this one before we leave.” “Maxwell, in the clothing store we have to dance? Is this a manner of life and death?” She chuckles. “No, but it is a matter of honoring the music.” As he dances around some clothing racks Kristina figures why the hell not. He is having a blast and everyone else that has been staring have gotten bored and gone back to their shopping. Three ‘Must dance to’ songs later Maxwell concedes it's time to go, but only when Kristina mentions an ice cream break. Maxwell grabs her hand and practically drags her behind him. Both laughing hysterically they pop into the ice cream parlor and each have sundaes that were way too big to finish.
On the ride back they car sing and of course car dance, which Kristina found to be just bobbing your torso back and forth whilst being buckled in, but fun none the less. When they arrived back they were pretty hyped on sugar and headed inside arm in arm. They were rather enjoying Bertrand's disgust when he sees their frivolity, and laugh as he gets even more flustered when they declare a race to their rooms to see who can be dressed and down in the dining room first.
“Oh Maxwell, my life is so boring and miserable without you.” Kristina says out loud to no one.
Still on the couch, she has the same daily war raging in her head. Did I choose the right thing by leaving? Yes, of course it was the right thing to do. I no longer could help House Beaumont and I, obviously, could never tell him how I feel now. Heh, I can’t imagine how that confession would help, between the unneeded pressure it would place on him, and his inevitable rejection. If there was any hope for me and him, leaving the way I did crushed that. Should I have made sure to tell him about my feelings before the Coronation? That wouldn't have ended well either because if by some miracle he felt the same for me what would have happened with us in the end? Between the state of House Beaumont, me not winning the crown, and my new reputation?
“Ugh!” she sighs out as she picks up her phone, starting to type THE text for the millionth time, and just as quickly deleting it for the millionth time. What could I even say after all these weeks? What could I even say to him when I myself am barely holding on?

-Ain’t No Sunshine-
Maxwell's POV
“Look Savannah, I’m sorry I changed your whole life plan. I even screwed that up.” Savannah heavily sighs. She and Maxwell were out on the patio overlooking the estate grounds. “Maxwell, for the thousandth time, coming home was what I wanted to do so deep down inside. Truly. I just wasn't brave enough to do it on my own. Now Drake and I talk daily, and Bertrand and I can start to see if there is anything salvageable between us. I stand by all my decisions in the past weeks.” Maxwell went to open his mouth, but Savannah put up her hand to stop him from saying what she already knew he was going to say. “Max, there is no fault you can take on here. I know you think talking to me about everything from House Beaumont to Kristina leaving was the catalyst for what you think is the upheaval of my life, but honestly it was the best thing. I just hate how it took your heartbreak to set things right for me.”
“Savannah, I never meant t-“ “Maxwell, if you hadn't opened up to me, I would have strangled you when I eventually found out. Even if you may never end up being my brother by law, I already see you as one.” Maxwell finally has a small hint of a smile as Savannah said that last part. “And you're my sister, Savannah. I have to admit for my own selfish reasons I’m glad you're home. You're the reason I’m making it through my days.” She put her arm around him. “Maxwell I have to ask, I know again, but why, well why are you doing what you're doing here?”
“Savannah, Bertrand needed me to stay home while he went on the Engagement Tour to keep our presence in Court. We all know I would have messed that up, and he needed me here to work on getting us into the best shape possible.” “Which,” Savannah looked at him with a pointed and knowing looking, “kept you from being outside this house and around people. Max, the fact you're choosing spreadsheets and managing much of the Estate’s needs is not you. You don't smile, you don't go out, you don't joke
you aren't you. At all. And I’m worried.” Maxwell rolls his eyes, “Well, Bertrand is happy, and I’m actually pulling my weight for once. I’ve got my spending under control and he knows about the support I was offering you. I’m finally growing up, and he’s happy. It's a good place to be.”
Savannah abruptly stands up and bores her eyes into his. “You aren't growing up, you are hiding. You are hiding from everything and everyone one. You're hiding from your feelings about Kristina. You aren't helping Drake and Hana look for Tariq. You aren't going out. You don't smile, sing, dance. And the woman you talked to me about for hours in Paris is now a taboo subject with you.” Maxwell shoots up and takes several steps back from Savannah, backing toward the door leading inside and to his escape. “I am busy doing what Bertrand needs. There is no more time for my childish antics. Looking for Tariq is a waste of time, it won't make anything different or bring things back to the way they were before that night. Krist
” his eyes close and he rubs his temples “she won't even answer anyone's calls or texts. She's let her voicemail fill so you can't leave her a message. She could have blocked our numbers for all we know.” Maxwell was begins to shake. “If by some crazy, impossible miracle they find Tariq there is no way to let her know about it. Plus she made her feelings very clear when she walked onto that plane.”
“Bull shit Maxwell, you know that’s all bull shit.” Maxwell’s jaw drops Savannah didn't ever swear. What the hell is going on here? “All those sad excuses are just that, excuses for not owning up to your feelings. I don't care how many times you tell yourself Kristina was just a friend, and how she only felt friendship for yo-” Maxwell interrupts with a hollow, biting laugh which was completely void of his happy go lucky self. “Friendship? She turned her back and walked onto that plane without a glance back.” “Oh come on Maxwell, get your head on straight. How can you entertain the thought that you know what she was feeling and thinking right then at that moment when you can't even own up to your feelings right now.” He crosses his arms and sharply asks, “And what exactly are these feelings which are apparently mine that I don't know of?” Savannah throws her hands in the air and walks two steps toward him. “I could stand here and tell you, but you’d come up with some new ridiculous excuse. Maxwell, I’m done with you today, but you need to think about all this, and soon or you're going to be miserable for the rest of your life.” Just as he was going to respond they both were snapped out of the conversation by the sound of a truck barreling up the drive. Drake’s truck. “Just great” Maxwell mumbled under his breath.
Drake left the engine going as he jumps out of the truck running up to Savannah and Maxwell. “We’ve narrowed it down! We know what city Tariq is in!”

“His Highness, Crown Prince Liam Rys.”
All conversations halted, and heads turned to the doors at the front of the room as Liam entered the ballroom. It was the final night of the social season, and he was only hours away from becoming the King of Cordonia.
This also meant he was only hours away from having to announce which suitor would become his queen.
He surveyed the room, observing each of the women, hoping for some sign as to who the right choice would be. He had spent the last few months with them at various events, spending one on one time with each woman, trying to make a connection or find a spark of something. He would always end up comparing them to her, and they would always come up short.
But she wasn’t here. She rejected the invitation.
Throughout the social season, his mind would drift to thoughts of Riley Brooks, memories of their night together. But that’s all they were, and all they would ever be. He had barely slept since the season began, spending his nights going over his options, trying to figure out who would be the best choice to rule by his side.
Kiara Thorton, a polyglot with a natural sense of diplomacy. She would certainly be an asset in building relationships and alliances. But would she have the compassion and candor needed to win over the citizens?
Penelope Ebrim, compassionate to a fault. However, her naivete would prove challenging during the more complex aspects of the job.
Hana Lee, a newcomer to Cordonian court. In the brief interactions Liam had with her, he found her to be kind yet incredibly timid and insecure. It was a toss up which one of them was least enthused to be a part of all of this. She was obviously there on her parent’s order alone.
Olivia Nevrakis, one of Liam’s oldest and dearest friends. She certainly cared for him, and he for her. But not the way a husband should care for his wife. Besides, she was a Nevrakis, a family with a checkered past in the Cordonian history books. She would be a controversial choice, questioned by many.
And finally, Madeleine Amaranth, the top contender in the press and with the council, including Liam’s parents. She had been his brother’s chosen suitor, jilted when he made the decision to abdicate. It was an unofficial betrothal agreement when they were children, so she had spent her whole life in training to sit on the throne. Everyone was sure that she would be Liam’s choice. Everyone, except for Liam.
While he did agree that Madeleine would be an excellent queen, there was something missing. He didn’t feel he could be the best king possible with her by his side. He needed a wife that would see him, and support him as a man, not just a king. He wanted to be able to retire for the evening and spend time as a family. He didn’t see that with Madeleine, her strength was also her weakness. He needed to be able to just be Liam sometimes, with Madeleine, he would always be the king.
“Little brother!” Liam was startled out of his thoughts by the sound of his brother’s voice.
“Leo? What are you doing here?”
“I couldn’t miss your big night!” He clapped his brother on the shoulder. “So, have you made your choice?”
Liam sighed at the question. His choice would have been for Leo to live up to his birthright, allowing him to remain the spare and hold on to a small semblance of freedom. “You will see in due time.” He responded, not wanting to admit that he still hadn’t decided.
“Oh, come on. Not even a hint?”
“How was the cruise?” Liam asked, diverting the attention away from himself.
“Ugh,” Leo groaned. “It didn’t go quite as planned.”
“So that woman, the one Madeleine found in your bed?”
“Yeah, she’s in someone else’s bed now.” He said nonchalantly.
Liam’s jaw ticked, as his fists clenched at his side. The woman who had captivated Leo so much that he had abdicated the throne, and put all of this on Liam’s shoulders, was with someone else. Leo gave everything up for nothing.
“Your Highnesses,” a voice interrupted before Liam could respond. The brothers turned to find a photographer holding up a camera to them. “Can I get a quick picture?”
“Of course, my good man!” Leo threw his arm around Liam, pulling him to his side. Liam put on his most stoic smile, hiding all of the emotions that were flowing through him in that moment.
Once the picture was taken, the photographer thanked the pair before bowing and stepping away.
“I don’t regret a second of it,” Leo continued once they were alone. “Everyone comes into your life for a reason, she helped me to see that this wasn’t the life I was meant for.” He signaled to the opulence of the room around them. “I needed to step away and find my own path. I’m not there yet, but I’m figuring it out.”
Liam nodded, noticing the parallels in their situations. In that moment, it all clicked, and he knew exactly what his decision would be. “If you’ll excuse me Leo, I need to meet with father before the announcement.”
“Of course, knock ‘em dead, bro!”
As Liam walked across the ballroom, looking for his father, his mind began to race. Maybe Riley wasn’t the love of his life, maybe that night was just meant to be a sign. Perhaps he could have it all, be the best king he could be without sacrificing his happiness.
“Excuse me,” Liam said, interrupting Constantine, who was deep in conversation with Madeleine's father. No doubt making plans for the impending engagement tour. “Father, if I may have a word with you, privately?”
“You’re going to be making your announcement shortly, we can speak afterwards.” He replied dismissively.
“Please, it’s urgent.” Liam insisted.
Constantine excused himself from his conversation and followed Liam into his study, closing the door behind him. As soon as they were away from the eyes of the court Liam’s demeanor changed, he seemed anxious, pacing back and forth across the floor. Constantine attributed it to the changes he would be going through in the next hour, and was grateful that he was able to conceal those emotions when he was in front of others.
“Godfrey and I were just discussing the engagement tour. We are going to begin in Fydelia, since it is the home of your future betrothed.” Constantine broke the silence in the room.
“I’m not choosing Madeleine.” Liam stated flatly.
Constantine’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Well, there will certainly be some damage control needed, but it’s not the end of the world. Don’t tell me you’ve chosen the Nevrakis girl. I know you two are close, but she was only invited to participate out of obligation. She cannot sit on the throne.”
“No, I’m not choosing Olivia.” Liam took a deep breath, preparing himself. “I will not be choosing one of the suitors.”
“But son, you need to be engaged to ascend the throne. You know I’m in poor health, I need to step down before
”
“That’s why I wanted to speak with you,” Liam interrupted. “I would like for you to make a change to the law. One final decree as reigning king.” He noticed his father’s trepidation, and continued speaking. “I just don’t think I can be the king Cordonia needs, or deserves, if I am married to one of those women. You know how important it is for a king to have the right queen by his side.”
“I do, that’s why I’ve been encouraging you to choose the countess. She has been preparing for this role since she was a child.”
“So have I, I went through all of the same lessons that Leo did. I can be a great king on my own, until I find a queen that will be good for this country, and for me.” Liam pleaded with his father.
Constantine studied Liam’s expression, he was steadfast and unwavering. “And if I refuse?”
“Then when I go up on stage tonight and I will announce my abdication. I believe the line of succession would then fall to the Nevrakis girl,” he mimicked Constantine’s earlier tone. “And you’ve made it quite clear how you feel about that.”
The reigning king’s eyes went wide at Liam’s ultimatum. “You would throw thousands of years of tradition away over this?”
“Over my happiness? Absolutely.” Liam’s expression softened in a final attempt to get his father to understand. “Cordonia deserves me at my best, and I cannot do that with one of these suitors, so I would rather step down than give them anything less.”
“You are certainly a fierce negotiator.” Constantine observed.
“I’ve learned from the best.” Liam replied, he smirked at his father, hoping to lighten the mood slightly. He was unsuccessful.
“And where do you imagine you’re going to find this woman?” Constantine asked. “I will not have you plastering your personal information all over these dating websites I’ve been hearing about.”
“No sir, I wouldn’t,” Liam assured. “I much prefer making a face to face connection.”
Constantine stood in pensive silence, thinking about Liam’s proposition, but also studying his son. He was looking for even the slightest break in his expression, but there was none. Liam knew he was being tested and failing was not an option.
“If I do this for you, you will make the announcement and deal with any of the fallout on your own.” He warned.
Liam nodded in understanding. “Of course.”
“Son, this conversation has shown me that you will be exactly the ruler this country needs.” Constantine placed a hand on his shoulder. “With or without a wife.”
“Thank you, father.” Liam’s tone remained even, afraid his father might change his mind if he showed too much enthusiasm. Inwardly, he was screaming.
“I will need about an hour to make the arrangements. You are to return to the ball, and keep this information to yourself. No one is to know until you step onstage and make the announcement.”
“Yes sir,” Liam extended a hand, which his father shook briefly before pulling him into a hug.
“I’m proud of you, son.” Constantine said, patting him on the back before pulling away. “Now get out there and keep everyone occupied.”
Liam nodded with a smile, and returned to the ball feeling lighter than he had in months.
As soon as he set foot in the ballroom, he was approached by Penelope, who asked him to dance. He obliged, and led her to the center of the floor. Penelope hadn’t stopped speaking once during their dance, but Liam didn’t hear a word she said. All he could think about was his announcement, and what this meant for him. He was one step closer to living his dream, and falling in love.
Once the dance was over, Liam parted ways with Penelope and made his rounds through the room, his eyes intermittently flickering toward the door. As the time passed, his nerves grew, worried that his father may renege on their agreement.
Liam was in the middle of a conversation with the Beaumonts when the music stopped, and a throat clearing over the speakers pulled his attention. He looked up to see his father standing on stage.
Once the crowd quieted down, Constantine began to address them. “The moment we’ve been waiting for all season has finally arrived. It has been my great honor to serve Cordonia these last few decades.” His expression sombered as he continued. “We’ve had turmoil, but Cordonia has pulled together even during our toughest times. I couldn’t be more proud to have been Cordonia’s king.”
The crowd applauded as Constantine searched the faces for his son. When his eyes locked on Liam, he nodded. Liam took the signal and made his way to the stage. When he took his spot at his father’s side, Constantine continued.
“I only now pass the crown to Prince Liam because I know he’ll carry on exactly as I have. I couldn’t ask for a better successor.”
“Father
” Liam’s expression softened, touched by his words.
“It’s true. I love your brother, but you are the king Cordonia needs.” He turned to smile at his youngest son before continuing. “You have more than proven that to me. Especially tonight. Today, I pass the royal signet ring to you. Cordonia is yours, my son.”
As the crowd cheered, Constantine took a step back, standing beside Regina, as Liam took his place in front of the microphone. “Thank you all for being here tonight. This is an incredible honor and a responsibility that I don’t take lightly. I only hope that I can serve Cordonia with the distinction that my father did.” He turned to his father and step-mother, bowing to them before pulling them each into an embrace.
“And now, the time has come, your prince will choose his bride.” Regina announced.
“Actually,” Liam returned to the microphone. “In the interest of hitting the ground running, I spoke with my father earlier tonight, and he has put through one final decree as king.” Liam looked to his father, who nodded in approval. “I truly appreciate all of the ladies that participated in the season. Your grace and poise throughout the weeks has not gone unnoticed. Your unwavering support for this country is an inspiration. However, I will not be choosing a bride tonight.”
The crowd immediately broke into gasps and murmurs as they took in Liam’s announcement. He looked out over the confused faces, taking in each of the suitors' reactions. Shock appeared to be the general consensus, until his eyes landed on Madeleine. Her expression remained impassive, but he could see the fire in her eyes before she abruptly turned and exited the ballroom. Liam did feel bad for her, this was her second time thinking she would become queen, and the second time the opportunity had been taken from her.
Liam heard a throat clear behind him and he turned, locking eyes with Constantine. He didn’t have to say a word, Liam understood. He lifted a hand to silence the crowd. “If you will allow me to explain,” he said, once the noise had died down. “As I said, each of the suitors showed immeasurable grace and dedication to their country, all of which are crucial qualities for a queen. However, there was one very important qualification that I could not find. I was unable to connect with them in the way that a man should connect with his wife.”
He paused for a moment, allowing a few whispers of confusion to ripple through the room. “I want to give this country my absolute best. To do that, I believe that I need to forge my own path, and find the right partner for me, and for this country.”
Questions were shouted out rapid fire from the crowd, Liam once again raised a hand and waited for the room to quiet down. “I understand that there will be many questions and concerns, I will do my best to answer and address them all in due time. However, right now, we do need to proceed with this evening’s agenda. I appreciate your support, and look forward to continuing to guide Cordonia into greatness.”
Liam ignored the lingering comments that were scattered throughout the crowd, and the evening went on as planned. He took his oath and was officially crowned the king of Cordonia. Despite the upset earlier in the evening, the tone for the rest of the event was full of cheer and hope. There were, understandably, lingering doubts about Liam’s decision, but the court had enough faith in him to be able to celebrate this moment for what it was, a new beginning for Cordonia.
At the end of the night, once the guests had retired to their rooms, Liam sat on his throne, taking in the gravity of what had just happened.
“You know you don’t have to sleep on that thing, right?” The gruff voice of his best friend pulled him from his thoughts.
“I know,” Liam responded. “I suppose I’m just letting things sink in.”
“That’s fair,” he shrugged. “So what now?”
“Well, there will be a few interviews and photo ops with the press. I will need to be formally introduced to our allies and neighboring countries.” He paused for a moment. “I suppose we will need to rebrand what was supposed to be the engagement tour. I will work out the details in the morning.”
“Yeah, let’s talk about that for a second,” Drake smirked. “What happened?”
Liam let out a humorless laugh. “Leo, of all things.” Drake looked at him curiously. “I was speaking with him earlier, and he was telling me about that woman from the cruise. It didn’t work out.”
“Shocking.” Drake deadpanned.
“Right? Well, he said something that resonated with me.” Liam explained Leo’s theory, and how it inspired him to stand up to his father, and forge his own path.
“That’s great Li, I’m really proud of you for standing up for yourself.” Drake congratulated his friend. “So when are you going to New York?”
Liam’s gaze snapped up, meeting Drake’s. “What do you mean? Why would I go to New York?”
“For the waitress.” Drake said with an arched brow. He knew Liam better than that. “That’s what all of this was about, wasn’t it?”
“Not quite,” Liam sighed. “Riley was my sign, not my soulmate. She made it clear that my feelings are not returned.”
“What are you talking about? I’m pretty sure it was obvious to everyone but you that she was into you.”
“Then why didn’t she accept Maxwell’s offer to join the social season?”
“Seriously?” Drake slapped his palm against his forehead. “Listen, take a step back and look at it from her point of view. She has this whole life, a job, a family, friends, and you expected her to give all of that up and join this mess because of a couple of hours? Nobody in their right mind would do something like that.”
Liam let out a deep breath, shaking his head. “It doesn’t matter, the moment has passed. I’m sure she’s moved on.”
“Li, you literally changed history for this woman. You mean to tell me that you’re not even going to try?”
“I changed history for myself.” Liam corrected him.
“Fine, you changed history for yourself, but it was because of her.” Drake rolled his eyes. “You’ve got a couple of weeks before the tour starts, right?” Liam nodded. “Okay, so take care of all the press and that stuff now, once that’s died down, fly out to New York and find her. If she’s going to reject you, at least have her reject you to your face so you know for sure.”
A silence took over the room as Liam considered Drake’s words.
“At least think about it.” Drake finally spoke up.
Liam locked eyes with his friend. “Thank you, Drake”
Drake nodded and took his leave, not wanting to push any further. It was a decision Liam would need to make on his own.
As Liam walked to his room, the king’s quarters, he found himself more conflicted than ever. He thought that his announcement would leave him feeling lighter, more at ease with his new role as king. However after his talk with Drake, he had so much more to think about. Should he return to New York? Was it possible that he could still have a chance with Riley?
He needed to start focusing on his duties as king, but once again, he couldn’t get her out of his mind.

Idk, Bertrand, seems Maxwell’s memories were pretty clear two books ago.
So can someone please explain why Maxwell is so defensive of Barthelemy now? I mean it’s not like the man has done anything to earn it.

Confessions pt 3 - Drake x MC (Lana Thomson)
Masterlist
Note: This is the third and final part to my first multiple part series. Thank you so much for taking this journey with Lana and Drake. Warning: Gun violence and blood occurs in this book (at the start). If you aren’t comfortable with that, I advise you do not continue reading (or read at your own risk)
Part 1 Part 2
Rating: PG 13+
Summery: When the train breaks down in Belgium, MC (Lana) invites Drake over to her hotel room to share some much needed time with him.
Tumblr media
He was drinking whiskey when he heard a door slam. He opened his door to look around, convinced that it was her’s. He couldn’t bare going over there and checking it out, instead he walked over to his window and looked out into the open. All the people out there, out of the gates that could live freely. That’s when he saw her; looking around carefully, trying to make sure no one was there.
What an idiot.
Why the hell would you leave right now.
Those were the thoughts running through his mind. He froze when he saw a guy dressed head to toe in black, pull out a gun.
He wanted so badly to scream at her, tell her what was happening. Instead he put his drink down and ran to his door, then down the hall. He froze when he heard the sound of a gun shot. The whole palace began to stir but he, he ran faster then he thought he ever could. But he was too late to her aid. She was on the floor, blood was covering the side or her stomach. Her trembling hand covering the spot where she had been shot.
He didn’t hesitate to run to her. He saw the unidentified person run from the side gate. He didn’t care, not now that the person that poured her heart out, tried to escape because of him and ended up dying because of him.
She locked eyes with him. She was breathing laboriously. He cupped her face. The palace life behind him. He started to form tears. “Please Lana, fight this once more for me. I promise you, if you just fight this one more time I’m all yours. Just please keep fighting.” He was crying, trembling.
With the strength that she had, she lifted her non bloody hand to his cheek and whispered in between strained breaths, “I’m sorry. I tried. Forgive me.” And just like that, she was gone. She had been there and then she wasn’t.
He pulled her up into him arms and cried into her. “Please baby, please come back to me. Please baby please.”
He felt a heavy hand on his shoulder and he lifted his head to look at this person. It was Liam. The pain in his eyes was heartbreaking to him. He lost Savannah, Lana, he wasn’t going to say goodbye to his best friend either.
“Drake, she’s gone. You need to go inside.”
“Go inside Liam?! Are you out of your bloody mind? I...we can’t just leave her.” Drake wasn’t being fair to Liam, but he had to let his anger subside. “Drake please, let’s just go inside.” Drake shook his head, “Liam, I never told you this but I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. I was in love with Lana. Madly, deeply, strongly in love with her.” Liam, wide-eyed stood there. He couldn’t believe what best friend had just admitted. “Drake! Go inside! Please.” The desperation in Liam’s voice was noticeable, but he didn’t care.
Drake took one more look at her body. So hurt and damaged. This was all his fault. He didn’t protect her. He didn’t even try.
______________________________________________________________________
Drake woke up in a cold sweat. “Thank god it was just a dream.” He mumbled under his breath. He tried hard to go back to sleep, but his mind kept wondering to what Lana was doing. If she was okay. If she was hurt. If that was a sign.
He got out of bed and made his way back to her room. The door still shut he knocked lightly. “Come in!” He breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that she was okay.
He entered and there she was, sitting on the chair, her back facing the door, her long hair draped down the back of the chair. She had a bottle of whiskey next to her - half finished.
“Thomson, you drank half a bottle of whiskey by yourself?” He said it in an amused voice, but when she didn’t reply he made his way to see the front of her.
Tears still streaming down her cheeks, she looked up at him with saddened eyes.
“You’ll be happy to know that tomorrow will be my last day here. I’m leaving.” She returned her gaze to the buildings that her window overlooked.
“Why?” Drake asked, genuinely curious and, with a lot of emotions he needed to know why.
“I was here for you. I don’t care whether I can’t clear my name anymore Drake. I told you I loved you and you left.” He could hear the anger and hurt in her voice, but before he could reply, she continued.
“I care about you Drake. Maybe I was more in the thought of us than you were. There isn’t any point as to why I should stay anymore. There isn’t anything here for me. Not you. Not Liam. I tried hard to fall for Liam Drake. I really did. But all roads led back to you. My heart made it pretty clear that, if I can’t live with you, I need to live without you. Not make it work with Liam. I care about him, I do. But I love you, not him.”
This made him think about all the things he could’ve said before. All the things he could say now to make it all better. Instead he didn’t say anything,  no, instead he took her into his embrace and let her try to push him away, then after she had given up, return the embrace while quietly sobbing.
“I’m sorry Drake. I really shouldn’t have said that I loved you.” He took her face into his hands and looked deeply into her tearful eyes. “Hey, hey. No one but me should be apologizing.” He suddenly paused and pain washed over his face.
“What?” Lana was worried. “Y-you said you shouldn’t have said you loved me. Do you regret it.” He slowly retracted his hands from her face.
Lana put her glass down and quickly placed her hands on Drake’s cheeks. Shaking her head she replied, “No, never could I ever regret that Drake. But, from what happened before I just thought maybe I should say I’m sorry for saying that.” Lana smiled weakly at Drake.
Taking her hands off of his cheeks and in turn kissing the inside of them, he whispered, “I don’t think that’s necessary Thomson. I should have said this before, and hopefully I’m not too late to say this but,” he looked intently into her eyes, and without hesitation said, “I love you so much Thomson. You think you love me but, I love you more then you could ever imagine. I love you more then anyone person in the entire universe can love anyone. I shouldn’t have run away before, but truthfully, I was scared. I was scared that you’d regret saying that, but I regret not saying it back straight away. If I could prove how much I loved you, I would. Right here, right now.”
Lana was smiling for she felt ecstatic. “Right here, right now huh?” She waggled her eyebrows at him.
He chuckled and pushed a strand of her wet hair behind her ear. “Like I said, if I could I would. But for me to make you mine, I need to know that we are free to do whatever we want. And I promise, when you are free, I’ll still love you, and then I can claim you as mine. Once and for all.
Whenever Drake stated that he wanted to make her his, it sent shivers down Lana’s back.
“Drake. I don’t care if we aren’t free yet. I need you to know that, you’re mine. No matter what anyone says or even knows. I’m yours and you’re mine. And I will count the days ‘till we can be together and become one. But until then, stay?”
Drake nodded. “Of course. I love you Lana Thomson.”
“And I love you Drake Walker.”
