So question about Banette: Where did you get the idea for a reaper-type of thing from what was originally a doll? Not that it's bad, I'm just curious. Seems like a drastic change from some of the others you've done.

For Banette, I tried to do both a reaper thing and a doll. A lot of Banette’s Pokedex entries mention how they’re filled with hatred and spite, and being ghost type and such I thought reaper imagery wouldn’t be out of place.

I was going for a doll angle but for Shuppet and Banette the imagery for me became more about sewing. The “mane” I have for Shuppet and Bannette is supposed to be reminiscent of a pin cushions, and the scythe for Banette is made from an oversized sewing machine needle, a button and half of a pair of scissors. If you look at some of my other designs like Mr. Mime, Shiftry and Roselia I’m not opposed to giving Pokemon weapons as long as I can make them look sorta organic or having a root in it’s typing or whatever, so since Banette is made of cloth I figured weird sewing tools would be neat to work in. 

I had an idea for Banette to be kind of scrapped together from clothes and I ended up basing a lot of it on a corset- so thats why there’s the buttons and ribbons for arms and such. I think the part of it being a straight up doll kinda got lost but I did try to push a sort of sewing and tailoring kind of angle-- I’m not a professional in the subject by any means so I could of gone in a little more on that angle if I spent more time researching but I was happy with the end result without it getting too fussy in the details.

So I guess in the end it became more about the idea of a doll then an actual doll itself, as possibly dumb and pretentious as that sounds. XD
