a Recommendation - 19 Top Films to Watch on Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day isn’t always about a box of chocolate or couple photos bombarding your feed all day; sometimes, it’s about snuggling under the covers with either your loved ones or love one, watching a comfort movie that makes you feel giddy both in the inside and outside.
Here is a (very long) list, categorized from cliche to not-really-romance-but-romance, of the best rom-com films you could watch on Valentine’s Day:
Tumblr media
Well-Known But Not Overrated:  from the 00s to the 20s - here are all the romcoms you may or may not have heard.
1. Set It Up (2018) Starring Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell, alongside Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, Set It Up is a fun New York-based romantic comedy on the spiral of two overworked assistants setting up their bosses.
Tumblr media
2. Definitely, Maybe (2008)  Nothing weirder than hearing about your parents having a life before you: Definitely, Maybe is a tale of three romantic stories and one mother mystery.
3. Love, Rosie (2014) Starring two rom-com sweethearts Lily Collins and Sam Claflin, Love Rosie is the original formulaic film of the ultimate childhood best friends to lovers + right person, wrong time trope.
4. Emma (2019)  With the perfect combination of wit, set, cast, and story, Emma is the perfect love letter to Jane Austen and fans of Regency Romance.
5. The Half of It (2019)  Small town and big romance: The Half of It is a quiet yet impactful film on coming-of-age, friendships, and high school crushes.
Tumblr media
6. Miss Congeniality (2000)  A perfect mixture of comedy and romance, Miss Congeniality will win your heart with the classic undercover cop story.
7. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) Carrying the charm and chemistry of a teenage rom-com, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before takes an overused trope of fake relationships and makes it its own, with an unforgettable classic high school love tale.
8. The Vow (2012)  Changing the entire course of two people’s lives in one accident, The Vow, based on a true story, is a heartbreaking film on love and grief.
A Bit More Than Boy Meets Girl  not so much of romance as connecting with friends or yourself; these movies are perfect for movie nights with friends or if simply you’re not in the mood for a classic rom-com:
9. Laggies (2014)  Starring Kiera Knightly, Sam Rockwell, and Chloe Grace Moretz, Laggies is a tale not only of unexpected love but the reality of feeling like lagged in your 20s.
Tumblr media
10. The Other Woman (2014)  The Other Woman is about the other woman, starring the golden comedy trio Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Kate Upton, as they set up for the perfect revenge.
11. Paper Towns (2015)  In the classic John Green tale of small-town high school and daydreaming for the manic pixie girl, Paper Towns is a tale of friendship and growing up, with a bittersweet ending that feels more real than the classic Disney happily ever after.
Tumblr media
12. The Way Way Back (2013)  With a ridiculously talented cast, The Way Way Back is a classic comedic and bittersweet summer beach film of love, parenthood, and friendships, all while coming of age in a world that doesn’t always go your way.
13. The Edge of Seventeen (2016)  Hilarious but uncomfortably too true to every teenager at one point, is a perfect film for both depth and comedy, dealing in the themes of betrayal, love, friendship, teenage angst, and loss.
Classics to Re-Binge - or Finally Get Around To Watching It  from the 90s to the 10s, created in the classic formula of wit, charm, iconic-ness, and of course: romance and comedy
14. How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)  Perhaps one of the most famous rom-com of the 21st century, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is exactly as the title suggests; even in the two decades since its release, the film remains fresh, original, and hilariously sharp in the rom-com film department.
Tumblr media
15. The Proposal (2009)  In the ultimate fake relationship trope, The Proposal is a classic New York-to-small-town romance, unforgettably delivered by Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.
16. 13 Going on 30 (2004)  13 Going on 30 achieves every 13-year-old girl’s dream; the film centralizes around the youthful and comedic 13-year-old-stuck-in-30-year-old body tale with just the perfect amount of true romance.
Tumblr media
17. Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Heartwarming and a feast to the eyes of cinematography, costumes, and score, Crazy Rich Asians is the story of Rachel Chu entering the world of crazy rich Asians, and her fight for her true love.
18. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)  In the perfect combination of romance and comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You is a classic in fake-relationship-turned-true-love, starring both the brilliant Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.
and of course: 19. Valentine’s Day (2010)  Starring the biggest names of rom-com from Julia Roberts to Anne Hatheway to Jennifer Garner, Valentine’s Day is a film of multiple love stories all interconnected, set in no other date but Valentine’s Day.

'Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs' and the dangers of faulty advertising
Red Shoes and the seven dwarfs was a film about snow white that came out in 2018. While the movie had a good team behind it, it didn’t fare well at the box office. This happened because a lot of the potential audience got discouraged from watching it because of the negative backlash that the ad campaign received.
The billboards that advertised the movie, featured the protagonist in two different forms, one fit the traditional beauty standard of being tall and slender, while the other one is shorter and chubbier. The second version is barefoot and holding her shoes, and the text next to her sais “What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?”
Tumblr media
The connotation of this statement is that women chubby and short women are not beautiful, and that promotes the myth that only women who fit the same standard as snow white on the left can be considered beautiful, and that there is one beauty standard that everyone should fit into. (Fiske 1982: 91)
The advertisement received a lot of backlash, including this tweet by Tess Holiday, a plus-sized model (Qingru, 2021)
Tumblr media
Furthermore, Chloe Grace Mortez, the voice actress of Snow White expressed being appealed by the add. (Segarra, 2017)
Having seen the movie, and read others’ opinions on it as well, the message of it was the complete opposite. An element of the film is that once Snow White wears her red shoes, she transforms into a more tall and slender version of herself, like the one on the left in the advertisement. While she does use the shoes, she mostly does it out of necessity, to hide from her stepmother, and because she realizes that people treat her better and are more likely to help her when she is in that form. Snow white however is fully confident in her real body and expresses that she misses it when she is wearing the shoes. Other characters’ arcs, like the main romantic lead, involve outgrowing their vanity and superficiality. Overall the movie's message is body positive. (Qingru, 2021)
It is very important to have a positive representation of people with appearances that don’t fit traditional beauty standards and having an advertisement like that can cause a lot of harm not only to the movie because of the backlash, but also to people who see it and internalize its message. The backlash the ad received was warranted, it is however unfortunate that the movie suffered because of it, since it had a pretty nice and positive message. This goes to show that a lot of care should be taken when creating promotional material for media.

Riverdale Roundup: 2x18 “ A Night To Remember”
Okay so I love musicals, but full disclosure i’ve never seen Carrie the musical, i’ve never seen Carrie. I like to sleep at night so I haven’t read any Stephen King novels. I never saw the original movie and the remake starred Chloe Grace Moretz and she’s just not my cup of tea. She couldn’t hold onto Brooklyn Beckham or my attention. I know the basics. They dump blood on the girl at prom and she burns down the school with her super natural powers. I read the wikipedia page on the movie so I am never well informed.
I appreciate all the singing right off the bat.  The whole fake documentary style isn’t exactly my vibe. I get it. They needed to keep Jughead involved. Cole Sprouse doesn’t like to sing or dance because Disney Channel probably trapped him in a room somewhere and tried to get him to record songs with names like “ Dance it Out” or “ Get that Girl”.
There is tension going on all over the place. Tension between Betty and Veronica, Archie and Jughead, Cheryl and Joise, Betty and her Mom.  Chuck and everyone.  Chuck just wants to show off his dance moves and prove that he’s no longer a fuck boy. He’s changed!
Jughead is like “ wtf Archie are you flirting with my gf while i’m like right here?” but Archie just wants Betty to be nice to Veronica. Betty doesn’t associate with liars even though she lies like all the time and she’s real good at it.
Okay so Cheryl almost got hit by a sandbag and then Kevin got a letter from the black hood being like “ Cut Cheryl from the show or like ima get you”
Alright so who sent this? Could it be Josie getting back at Cheryl for sending her a pigs heart? That seems like a stretch. Honestly it’s probs the real black hood. He’s not dead. He’s hiding in a cave somewhere plotting his time.
Archie has to keep the car his sugar daddy gave him at his girlfriends house so that his real daddy doesn’t know that he’s been bought.
Betty and Jughead who have been thirsting for a good mystery since no one has been murdered in the past three weeks are ready to dive into figuring out who sent this letter.
They target Ethel first because she was “ born to play Carrie” and Ethel gets uber defensive and is like “ i’m not violent! I would never hurt anyone for my own gain!” despite the fact that she straight up covered Veronica in a strawberry milkshake maybe three days ago. I mean she didn’t punch her in the face but that wasn’t exactly a solve your problems with words type of reaction.
There is MAD tension between FP and Alice. FP is playing hard to get and Alice might have thought that was cute when they were 15 but she’s a grown ass lady now with an extensive wardrobe and she will not put up with this bullshit.
Cheryl and Josie sing a song about friendship and Josie forgives her for being a grade A psycho.
The Lodges are trying to bring down Freds campaign and they are clearly going to use Archie to do it. Hiram is going to skip on down to the Andrews house and be like “ Your son calls me Daddy now.”
The 70’s hair and outfits are pretty iconic.
Veronica sings about being a mean girl and Betty is finding the whole thing way too meta. Also casual  how this public high school allows for the choreography to include Veronica giving Chuck a very casual lapdance.
Betty calls Veronica out in front of everyone and Archie is like “ Betty you don’t get it. Veronica isn’t mean you’re mean.”
Archie and Betty sing their love ballad and Betty goes to apologize to Veronica. It turns into a love ballad between Betty and Veronica. The fangirls are going crazy. This is like their fanfiction come to life on the screen.
Fred is building the sets but Hiram is the producer so really who’s the top dog? Fred plays it off like he isn’t pissed that Hiram bought Archie a car but in real life he’d like to take that drill and do some burr holes Izzie stevens style, sans anesthesia. Fred wanted to build a car with Archie. What is it with Riverdale that everyone builds cars with their dads?
Alice has issues with men. FP rejects her so she goes crawling to Chic who won’t return her calls. It’s yikes.
Kevin gets another letter about re casting Cheryl. Cheryl is like “It’s fine fam. I’m going to do it anyway. I’m a bad bitch. You can’t kill me.”
Penelope is like “ look bitch. I hate you. You aren’t doing the play.”
Cheryl needs to pull a Nathan Scott and get emancipated. She’s got money. Get Nana Rose and a lovely little apartment.
Ethel is so pumped that Cheryl is out of the show but Kevin pulls Midge out of his asshole and presents her as the understudy.
Cheryl and Toni share a moment talking about all the whack things that Cheryl did and yet it’s supposed to be like cute? Like wouldn’t it be a good thing that Cheryl is no longer the same person who burned down her house?
Life imitates art a little too much for Alice and she starts singing straight to Betty. Alice just wants to keep Betty close. Everybody else keeps dipping on her. Polly took her Kardashian named children and ran away to California, Hal is a total loser but he bailed too, Chic is gone but honestly Alice that isn’t a loss. Betty wants to help her mom and honestly I think she should get her a nice lap dog. That will keep her good company and it won’t run away to San Francisco.
Archie returns the car that Hiram got him because he can not be bought. He can only be rented.
Alice and Betty have opening night jitters so they can’t enjoy their lovely family meal.
Hal stops in with some superstore flowers in an attempt to woo his way back into the house. I told you to get her a puppy Betty! Not a person.
Alice makes Betty leave so she can talk to Hal and I thought that she was going to be like  “ I slept with FP” but instead she’s like Chic isn’t your son.  I mean if she doesn’t want to keep secrets she should tell Hal that someone died right where he’s sitting like a month earlier.
Archie got the world oldest car to fix up. Fred was on the verge of bankruptcy approx 4 days ago so in what world will they be able to afford all these rare parts?
Cheryl gets some blood from the butcher and goes full horror movie on her mother. She’s ready to burn down thistle house. Oh my god she just said she’s going to get emancipated. She listens to me. She takes my advice. She upped it and wants to keep the house. Honestly she deserves it. She and her nana can live out their lives without the extra weight.  I mean isn’t the house Nana Roses? Penelope got Thorne Hill right?
FP turns up to see the show to find that he’s too late and Alice has fallen back into the arms of her no good rotten husband.
Is Midge cheating on Moose with that Hanks guy or whatever the hell his name is?
Jughead finds the cut up magazines in Ethel's dressing room and if it really was her that cut up the letter she is a really shitty criminal. But calm down guys! It’s for her vision board!
Chuck and the gang are having a lovely heartfelt moment and then her creepy brother shows up. Now everybody is uncomfortable. He’s a ruiner.
Those sets that Fred built are lovely. The sets our schools shitty musical had general consisted on just some risers and projected pictures.
Oh my god. Shut the fuck up. Is Midge dead? We all knew the black hood wasn’t dead. Moose saved her from death the first time but BH is back for revenge.  Plus now she’s a philanderer so she had it coming x2.
Anyway, that’s what you missed on glee

summer films ‘18
hi there! to clarify, this is a log of films i’ve seen this summer, not exactly films set in the summer, so if you’re here for that, i’m sorry?
anyway, here we go!
1. kasal (2018) / dir. ruel s. bayani ♡ 180525 ♡ girl is engaged to the son of cebu’s current mayor who is currently preparing for elections, but her ex comes back and tries to win her back ♡ cliche, i know, but trust me, this movie deals with this plotline in a very interesting way ♡ and come on, it’s bea alonzo and paulo avelino, two icons 2. high school musical (2006) / dir. kenny ortega ♡ 180614 ♡ iconic, i love troy bolton, thanks for reminding me ♡ i know sharpay isn’t that bad but she’s still a bully lol ♡ the choreography for when there was me and you got me dying i love it ♡  fave song: stick to the status quo 3. high school musical 2 (2007) / dir. kenny ortega ♡ 180622 ♡ my least favorite in the trilogy ♡ there was so much unnecessary drama they should’ve cut troy some slack ♡ i hate chad danforth, that’s all ♡ fave song: you are the music in me 4. high school musical 3: senior year (2008) / dir. kenny ortega ♡ 180622 ♡ my favorite in the trilogy! ♡ i still hate chad tho lol but i love taylor so much she’s my favorite character! ♡ i wish they elaborated more on gabriella though, because i like to imagine an alternate ending where she declines stanford and stays in albuquerque for another year which disappoints everyone and puts a strain on her relationship with troy. that would’ve been so interesting! ♡ fave song: i love all of them, but if i had to choose, the boys are back 5. kimmy dora 2: the temple of kiyeme (2009) / dir. joyce bernal ♡ 180626 ♡ the only reason i watched this was because i had a terrible pimple on my forehead and it reminded me of some horror movie then i realized it was this so i had to look for the particular scene ♡ the movie was really bad, as expected ♡ but i absolutely love eugene domingo!! she’s so talented i really admire her as an actress

6. before sunrise (1995) / dir. richard linklater ♡ 180630 ♡ this was the day my internet ultimately stopped working (for four days, if i may add) so i thought hey why not start that movie marathon i’ve been meaning to do ♡ i was excited to watch this because it’s a known pop culture reference, and also because it’s seulgi’s favorite movie ♡ it’s unique! it’s not easy to film a story that revolves around two people who’ve just met walking around in a city neither of them knows ♡ i liked this movie but it wasn’t that spectacular or anything, i think it lacks emotion and excitement ♡ but please, do not get off a train in europe with someone you’ve just met that is dangerous
Tumblr media
7. before sunset (2004) / dir. richard linklater ♡ 180630 ♡  i knew nothing about this so i was actually surprised to see the same actors nine years after before sunrise’s release ♡ i like this better than the first one! céline shows the emotions i was looking for ♡ it’s much simpler and easier to follow because it really is just them walking around and talking to continue the story because of the short amount of time they have together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. before midnight (2013) / dir. richard linklater ♡ 180630 ♡ this movie is the reason i watched the series! it was mentioned in it’s okay, that’s love so i thought i needed to watch this, and honestly, it helped me understand the characters from iotl a bit better! ♡ it ended up being my favorite film of the three ♡ it’s more complex than the first two because it introduces more characters and is set in more locations ♡ after years of watching and reading romcoms, this made me believe in love
9. gone girl (2014) / dir. david fincher ♡ 180701 ♡ i knew nothing about this film except that there was a girl and she was missing and the plot is unexpected? ♡ i won’t say much on this because it’s amazing when you watch it without knowing anything ♡ but it is CRAZY it hecked me up so much wow ♡ will try reading the book when i can!! 10. the grand budapest hotel (2014) / dir. wes anderson ♡ 180701 ♡ my first wes anderson film (finally) ♡ bored me at first because sadly, i can’t relate to rich european men who live in hotels and have sex with elderly women ♡ but it is so much more than that! it’s funny and deals with loyalty, the war, and crap immigrants go through ♡ yes, the cinematography is unique and beautiful, but i couldn’t appreciate it much from years of seeing wes anderson stills on my social media ♡ i went into this without knowing anything about it, but i wish i’d watched the trailer beforehand because that would’ve helped me appreciate it more 11. the fault in our stars (2014) / dir. josh boone ♡ 180702 ♡ i was bored and looking through my sister’s hard drive and i thought hey why not watch sad western teen books-turned-movies i used to glorify years ago ♡ it was alright but knowing every line, song, facial expression that would come next made it worse ♡ john green’s cameo is so awkward it’s almost funny ♡ i hope i never meet an augustus waters in my life 12. if i stay (2014) / dir. r.j. cutler ♡ 180703 ♡ part 2 of sad western teen books-turned-movies i used to glorify the story is pretty good but the film itself isn’t as good as i remembered ♡ i’m still so in love with jamie blackley after four years he’s so handsome and his voice is beautiful ♡ chloe moretz’s acting is really awkward though it’s almost painful to watch ♡ it made me want to reread the sequel where she went though! 13. she’s dating the gangster (2014) / dir. cathy garcia-molina ♡ 180705 ♡ i started this with an open mind and some expectations because although i hated on it for no reason years ago, i wanted to give it a chance ♡ but i’m sorry it really is bad ♡ kenji delos reyes is manipulative and selfish i hope i never meet a guy like him 14. grave of the fireflies (1988) / dir. isao takahata ♡ 180706 ♡ two siblings in the middle of a war ♡ watched this because a friend wanted to rabbit with me! ♡ i haven’t seen a ghibli film in a while so this was refreshing ♡ really sad though :( 15. 10 things i hate about you (1999) / dir. gil hunger ♡ 180706 ♡ guy is paid to date girl lol ♡ julia stiles is so beautiful :( i love her ♡ pretty funny actually! ♡ also watched this because friends wanted to rabbit with me :> 16. i’m drunk, i love you (2017) / dir. jp habac ♡ 180707 ♡ i finally, finally watched this ♡ not gonna lie it disappointed me? so many people loved it but for me it was eh ♡ paulo avelino’s character was pretty lacking for me, i wish they’d elaborated more on him ♡ but i liked the group dynamic because they’re not the wholesome, fake happy kind of friends, seeing them interact made me feel like they’re people i really know in real life (which made me miss my own friends) ♡ even jasmine’s character felt real because she’s probably someone i’d know HAHA ♡ fun fact: i’ve listened to the song lloydy long before watching this because i mean? a song about john lloyd? sign me up 17. that thing called tadhana (2014) / dir. antoinette jadaone ♡ 180708 ♡ another film i finally watched after multiple pop culture references ♡ i actually kinda liked it! it literally has a spiel about john lloyd of course i do but it gets better when the main characters become comfortable with each other ♡ i find it interesting that the director also directed love you to the stars and back which is another film that revolves around two people, both dealing with stuff, who’d just met and decide to go on a journey together ♡ the characters also feel pretty realistic/relatable once you get to know them 18. the spectacular now (2013) / dir. james ponsoldt ♡ 180709 ♡ part 3 of sad western teen books-turned-movies i used to glorify ♡ the only reason i rewatched this was because it was the shortest of the films i had at the time and i needed something to pass the time while loading episodes of svt club ♡ i mean it’s okay? not bad not good and i don’t even like miles teller ♡ shailene woodley perfectly plays the part of the awkward oblivious girl (and that’s not a compliment) 19. the breakup playlist (2015) / dir. dan villegas ♡ 180716 ♡ this film was so refreshing to watch?? sarah portrayed a youthful musician just starting out so so well i love her so much what a great first sarah g movie for me ♡ piolo made me fall in love with him and later on hate him, as he should ♡ i love opm kaya seeing the gig scene, some actual artists like ebe dancel, and looots of covers of songs like wag na wag mong sasabihin by kitchie nadal and with a smile by eraserheads ♡ i understand now why people love paano bang magmahal HAHAHA 20. barcelona: a love untold (2016) / dir. olivia lamasan ♡ 180717 ♡ alright so remember how i absolutely hated sdtg? ♡ I LOVED THIS FILM SO. MUCH. ♡ kathniel matured a lot in two years and i think they were perfect for this!! they really showed certain struggles of young adults and did not disappoint ♡ it also shows filipino values for family, utang ng loob, ofw struggles, etc ♡ and of course the cinematography is beautiful HUHU i mean it’s barcelona!! 21. my annoying brother (2016) / dir. kwon soo-kyung ♡ 180721 ♡ honestly took me a bit to get into it  ♡ i expected it to be funny and although it did make me laugh a lot why were there tears :((( ♡ kyungsoo is so, so, so talented i admire him so much as an actor now ♡ really hits you in the feels! a really beautiful story about two brothers 22. so i married an anti-fan (2016) / dir. kim jae-young ♡ 180724 ♡ meh ♡ it took some getting used to seeing chanyeol being all snobbish and cool instead of his usual loud happy self ♡ of course it’s overdramatic for the comedy, but the hate-turned-love isn’t even that good lol it’s just unreasonable but whatever ♡ the lead girl reminds me of arci munoz HAHA 23. wonder (2017) / dir. stephen chbosky ♡ 180725 ♡ we watched this during my summer program and i was actually pretty excited because i remember loving the book! ♡ this honestly teaches you a lot not even just from the perspective of children but also as teenagers, parents, friends, etc ♡ i thoroughly enjoyed it!

11 Interesting Stories Of How Movie Stars Got Their Famous Roles

11 Interesting Stories Of How Movie Stars Got Their Famous Roles
Ben Affleck and his strained smile
David Fincher is usually very thorough when choosing actors for his movies. But sometimes everything is decided by chance. According to the director, Ben Affleck got his role in Gone Girl because of his smile! “In the movie, there’s a scene where journalists ask the husband to stand next to a photo of his missing wife, and he does so with a very strained smile. I flipped through Google Images and found about 50 shots of Affleck giving that kind of smile in public situations. So, that’s when I realized he’d be ideal for the part!” Fincher said.
Jennifer Lawrence and her unwashed hair
One might argue that Jennifer Lawrence got her first big movie role because she came to the audition with a runny nose and really dirty hair. She did this on purpose, in order to get into the character of a 17-year-old girl from a dysfunctional family. At first, the director of the drama, Winter’s Bone, dismissed Lawrence’s bid for the part, thinking she was too pretty. But the aspiring actress was not to be stopped!
Lawrence was so eager to star in the movie that she flew to New York, intentionally walked 13 blocks through sleet, and showed up for the audition not wearing any makeup and with a head of hair that she hadn’t washed for a week. As a result, she got the coveted role.
Kate Winslet’s remarkable persistence
To get her iconic role in Titanic, Kate Winslet (then a little-known actress) had to try very hard. With the help of her agent, she got James Cameron’s phone number and kept calling him, insisting that she was ideal for the part of Rose DeWitt Bukater. Kate even sent the famous film director a bouquet of roses with a note saying: “From your Rose.” Despite the fact that the actress went a bit too far, these gimmicks helped her achieve her goal!
Emma Watson’s excessive talkativeness
Auditions for the main roles in the Harry Potter franchise lasted for a long time — the director/producers could not find the right person to play Hermione. Finally, JK Rowling herself joined in the search. One day she happened to chat with Emma Watson over the phone, and was totally delighted by the results. At many points during the conversation, the 10-year-old girl talked incessantly, not letting the writer get a word in. This made Rowling think she’d be an ideal choice to portray Hermione in the movies.
James Michael Tyler and his barista skills
It wasn’t his master’s degree in fine arts that helped the actor get the role of Gunther on the cult TV series Friends. In fact, Tyler was the only one among the applicants who knew how to operate a coffee machine. However, the actor admits that, offscreen, he isn’t a big fan of coffee! Wayne Knight’s abundant sweating
Spielberg himself called Wayne Knight’s agent to offer the actor the role of programmer Dennis Nedry. Later, Wayne revealed what exactly helped him land the part in Jurassic Park. The famous director first saw Knight in Basic Instinct and was impressed by his profound sweating in the Sharon Stone interrogation scene. When Spielberg started to film his epic, he thought that the actor’s sweaty face would look great in a sci-fi setting. As he put it to Wayne: “Instead of woman’s legs, you’ll be looking at a dinosaur!”
Matthew McConaughey’s mustache
At first, Richard Linklater didn’t intend to cast Matthew McConaughey in the movie Dazed and Confused, considering him too handsome for the role of David Wooderson. However, after the actor gave a convincing performance at the auditions, the director changed his mind. But Linklater’s condition was that McConaughey had to grow a sleazy mustache. Naturally, Matthew agreed.
Chloe Grace Moretz’s fake accent
Martin Scorsese wanted the whole cast of his movie, Hugo, to be made up of Britons. Moretz (an American) was so eager to land a part in a Scorsese film that she imitated a British accent at the audition and lied, saying that she was from England. However, the lie was later revealed when she thanked the director at the end of the audition, but Scorsese was impressed enough to cast her anyway.
Harvey Spencer’s convincing punch
The director of the classic horror movie, The Omen, spent a lot of time and effort on casting the main role — the son of the devil disguised as a little boy. At the auditions, Richard Donner asked each of the young applicants to attack him. 4-year-old Harvey Spencer proved to be the most convincing. When he punched Donner, the director realized he had found the perfect Damian!
Chris Hemsworth’s troubles with height
To get the role of Thor in The Avengers, the actor had to resort to a little trick. Hemsworth is 6’3’’ while the brief for the audition stated a height limit of 6’1’’ (the director didn’t want a big-screen Thor to “dwarf” the other characters). As a result, Hemsworth lied about his height.
Sophie Turner and her subscribers
We all know how much influence social networks have on people’s lives. But can you imagine a situation where actors are given or not given a coveted role based on their number of followers on Instagram? According to one of the stars of Game of Thrones, this already happens! Turner admits that she was recently cast in a movie because she had more online subscribers than another applicant (who, according to Sophie, performed better than her at the auditions!).
