5/08/2023 - Berkly Catton captains Team Canada to gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, leading the tournament with 8 goals and 2 assists in 10 games || 19/01/2024 Meet the Future - Berkly Catton named Team White's captain for the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game || 5/07/2024 - Berkly Catton signs his ELC with the Seattle Kraken
Introduction, quotes/transcripts/bits and pieces under the cut!
I can't even begin to describe how jazzed I am that Berkly Catton got drafted to a team I already love. I wrote in my Sharks off-season roundup that I was hoping against hope Catton would drop to 14th overall (back before we had moved up to 11th) and the Sharks would snap him up, as unlikely as it was that they'd try to gather more firepower when we sorely needed defensive prospects. I'm so glad I got my wish one way or another <3
Krakenblr you will LOVE this dude. He's such a star. Such a character. Berkly Catton is so, SO fun to watch. You have no idea!!! I followed him in the months leading up to the draft because there was buzz that he might be available lower down because of the Height Issue (he is, tragically, 5'11 <- which makes him undraftable unfortch) + concerns with how his game will translate to the NHL level. He is an electrifying playmaker. He's so creative, throws in so many fakes, WILL break ankles, very good hands... ough <3 everything I personally love to see in a forward all rolled into one neat little package !!!
There's the suggestion that he's been "over-scouted," which really just means they've all been watching him so long they're probably overthinking things and looking for stuff to critique. I'm inclined to believe this take over the other one because I'm an optimist and he was one of my little guys going into the draft! I won't include more of that here, but there's plenty of material out there if you'd like to look for it.
Below are some of my favourite bits and pieces from media he's appeared in <3
“I don’t like to give it away (pause) but I look at guys before games,” Catton revealed. “What’s weird is going from midget to junior hockey is a big jump. Last year I was learning. This year I wanted to add stuff. My pregame stuff and to look at guys doing draws and seeing what works. That’s pre-scouting on my end. If a guy has a certain move, and you can trump it early, it gets in his head a little bit. That helped quite a bit.”
“I think I sometimes have a problem with passing the puck too much. I love seeing my teammates score and setting up for an open net. It’s one of my favourite things in hockey, if not my favourite,” Catton admitted. “That’s something I can work on. When I get a chance put it home kind of thing. I got better this year at it’s still something I’d like to improve. Honestly, I’m a pass first mentality guy I would say.”
- Berkly Catton’s video scouting has improved his overall game
You know, when I first read and saved this article I was like; this prospect who reviews VIDEO is gonna haunt me. That's my weakness btw, I'm freak4freak. If you tell me a hockey player is also deeply infatuated with the game to the point of reviewing tape in their free time that's IT for me. it's JOEVER. i have a type and i know it <3 also wowie a pass-first guy who gets really really happy when his teammates score??? crying. crying. Berkly Catton . tucking uou gently away <3 forever <3
From A Day in the Life: Berkly Catton & Conner Roulette
Fave movie is The Notebook (<- unrelated there's a . really funny comment on this video from a philly fan lamenting that Catton likes the Notebook - I assume because that's some uhhh how do the kids call it,, femme soyboy shit? lmao anyway stay LOSING toxic masculinity !!!)
The boys call him 'Berk' <3
He talks about Jack Hughes being a big influence on him (in other media, he gives Hughes as a player comp!) and going to hang out and work with the Hughes family in Michigan. I sense a thread of admiration here like it's such a sweet little crush LOL <3 I hope he notices you Berkly !!
he gives the player of the match hat to a coach/trainer (one of the two) it's lovely... ouhhh... good little fella so polite and so conscious of staff being the foundation of his success... mwah!!
From Berkly Catton Talks Hockey Sense, His Start In Hockey & More | Game Tape With Tony
His father and grandfather built him a rink in his backyard, very sweet.
1OA in the WHL draft!
Anime main character levels of training-arc... my guy shot thousands of pucks over the summer in his backyard and then came back suddenly able to score goals. <- this is where the DIY goalie made of wood and blocker pads comes in. lol. lmao. are u even real.
sorry. sorry. OLEN ZELLWEGER MENTION. <- one of my personal favourite little guys (undersized puck moving defensemen my BELOVED) "Kind of a funny story [...] I pretty much had a breakaway, when he just turned backwards and played it as a 1-on-1 somehow, and I was like 'wow, this guy's the real deal', so." I really liked how Catton easily recalled a specific person/moment when asked who challenged him the most in the WHL; I think it speaks to a thoughtfulness about the game - it would've been easy to just give a vague Oh Everyone Is Good answer here and I like that he didn't!
There's a section where he talks about how he got so good at stick lifting, such an interesting perspective I never considered - he played in situations and against people where he couldn't just throw his body around to win, so he had to learn to get the puck in other ways. KEVIN KORCHINSKI MENTION <- another one of my little guys <3
mentions his dad being a big influence on his 'patience'. parents are so funny to me. ur watching your sons juniors matches? and Ohhhhh Chris Catton was a hockey player too . it all makes sense. Berkly Catton product of jockdad like so many before him <3
I do love that throughout this interview, Catton defers to his linemates a lot. Always hyping them up and talking about how he owes his success to them. it could be construed as false humility, given Catton was the highest scoring draft-eligible in the league - but he really does go out of his way to emphasise how highly he regards them and how much of their on-ice success is owed to good chemistry built up over the entire season. It strikes me as genuine!! He's a good boy <3
Revealed he can solve a rubix cube at the end... wow... he just liek me fr...
PLEASE watch this on-ice interview where he's chatting after a game and then gets ABSOLUTELY WASTED by 5 water bottles and all the boys. he is clearly so so so beloved in that locker room waaaahhh <3
Anyway this isn't an exhaustive list but it IS a lot of the reasons why I really liked him pre-draft. welcome to the deep Berkly <3

Double Exposure proves Bae is the right choice
While Double Exposure will factor in the final choice of Season 1 in some capacity, we already know the game will always start the same way.
With Max attempting to rewind time to save Safi's life.
This is very different from the time Max saved Chloe's life in the school bathroom on Monday. Saving Chloe's life, Max had no idea about the potential consequences of rewinding time. Hell, at first she didn't even know she had any power at all and simply reacted instinctively. On Monday, Max made no choice. She had the option to erase her rescue of Chloe on Friday. But rewinding time on Monday she didn't know she could bring about a Storm.
But ten years later, Max is painfully aware that by rewinding time she could cause terrible consequences. Yes, I know her powers evolved in the meantime and conveniently there's not going to be another Storm this time around. But Max learns that only AFTER she attempts to rewind time to save Safi. When Double Exposure Max makes her choice, she decides to rewind time to save a friend's life, knowing full well the potential destructive consequences and accepting them. It's only after she attempts to do so, she ends up in a parallel timeline, instead of the past (and she's still going to attempt to rewrite the past, as she says she has to prevent Safi's murder in both timelines, including the one in which it already happened).
In essence, Max's choice to rewind time to save Safi's life is a repetition of the Bae vs Bay choice. Knowing full well about the potential consequences of time travel, Max had to choose - whether to risk said consequences to save a friend's life or to let that friend die, the fear of consequences preventing her from acting.
And Double Exposure Max, no matter if it's Bae Max or Bay Max, always chooses to act, to rewind time consequences be damned. She chooses not to abandon a friend, no matter what.
It makes perfect sense for Bae Max to attempt to use rewind to save Safi. Because she has already proven she wouldn't be able to stand idly by while a friend is murdered. So Double Exposure Max attempting to use rewind, knowing full well what it might inadvertently bring about, is perfectly consistent with Bae Max's philosophy.
But it makes zero sense for Bay Max to attempt to use rewind. Because she has already proven that the fear of consequences would prevent her from using her power, even to save her "number one priority". That is of course assuming that Bay Max stood by her choice. Because the above-mentioned discrepancy could be easily explained by Bay Max regretting her choice to sacrifice Chloe, concluding she did the wrong thing and being unwilling to repeat the same mistake with Safi.
Bae Max stands by her choice ten years later. She saves Safi's life just like she saved Chloe's. If Bae Max regretted sacrifing Arcadia Bay, she wouldn't attempt to rewind time to save Safi, afraid of destroying another town. But she does attempt to rewind, standing by her previous choice, exhibiting unwavering devotion to friends.
Bay Max clearly regrets her choice to sacrifice Chloe and does a complete 180, choosing to save a friend's life this time around.
Don't you see? When Max is left to her own devices, when she makes the choice, not the player, she chooses to save a friend's life.
Double Exposure confirms something that in my opinion was obvious from the start. If Max, not the player, was tasked with making the final choice, she would save Chloe.
Just listen to what Max ALWAYS says about Chloe, regardless of player choices:
“I'm with you to the end, Chloe. You know that”.
“Sorry San Fransisco. Chloe comes first!”
“Chloe, you’re priceless”.
“I’ll always believe you, Chloe”.
“I never want to hurt you! Ever!”
“I always wanted my life to be special, an adventure. But not without you!”
“You are my number one priority now! You are all that matters to me!”
“It doesn’t matter what happens to me. I have to save Chloe!”
“Nobody is going to hurt Chloe ever again!”
“William, I just want you to know that whatever happens, I'll always be here for Chloe”.
“Because I will never abandon you, Chloe. I'll always have your back”.
"I'll miss Chloe more than the rest of Arcadia Bay combined. It's not even close".
Unexpectedly, Double Exposure settled the Bae vs Bay debate for good. Max would choose the Bae. When she was left to make the same choice with Safi, independently of any player input, she chose the Bae.

every active first overall pick | 2015, connor mcdavid
Drafted first overall in the CHL as an "exceptional" fifteen-year-old, McDavid was expected to be The Next Next One years before he was even drafted. In the near-decade since his draft, he is a three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner (tied for the active leader with Alexander Ovechkin), including being one of only two players to win unanimously, a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, and a Conn Smythe winner, although he has never won a Stanley Cup. When he was nineteen, he was named the youngest captain in NHL history. He also holds the record for most OHL individual trophies (although he never won the Memorial Cup) and is third all-time in points per game. He is universally recognized as a top-five player all-time. Some call him "McJesus."

I remembered seeing an old post that comparing Marinette and Chloe and how they have similar behavior. I forgot the detail but the more season I watch, the more it clicked.
They both don't think of problem as "how it affect others" it's always "how it affect me", they both think of Adrien as a property, they both also never get a "no" from their parents, now I think again. In Animaestro Marinette insist that she want to help despite her clumsyness and they end up give in with Sabine say "we should make double batch just in case".
And I think that's why Marinette is the way she is : she's good at putting boundaries but bad at respecting other boundaries, she thought if she insist enough they'll give in (and she's not wrong, almost everyone in the show end up give in to her demand/request, event Su Han) Her parents spoiled her in different way than Andre does to Chloe but in the end, they're spoiled and never/rarely get a "no" from their parents, they let them do what they want.
I wish I could say the difference between them is that Marinette has higher moral ground than Chloe but after s5 I don't know if that's valid.
Reding back now I feel bad for Adrien because those who pursue him think of him more as a property than actual person with feelings, except Kagami.
I think that's uncharitable to Marinette. She does have trouble understanding others, but it's often when she's trying to help and she always means well, it's just that she isn't good at considering others' perspectives. Chloe on the other hand doesn't care about the people she torments (I don't include Andre in this list for obvious reasons). The one exception to this is probably Sabrina, whom she likes but treats poorly regardless.
And I don't agree with the comparison between Andre and Tom and Sabine. Tom and Sabine are good parents. I don't think them agreeing to let Marinette help them is a bad thing, in fact it's good that they are allowing her such opportunities. She didn't browbeat them into anything or ask for anything that was unreasonable. Marinette's parents don't spoil her, they give her responsibilities (Timebreaker), and they do take her to task when they have to, (Simon Says). We see less of that in the future seasons, but we don't see much of her parents in general, so.
I also disagree that they think of Adrien as property. Both Marinette and Chloe think Adrien is perfect, as does almost everyone else, but they also genuinely care about him. Marinette tries to help Adrien many times throughout the show (The Collector, the New York Special, etc.) and Chloe also cares about Adrien as a person (Felix). Marinette is bad at recognizing Adrien's feelings and sometimes her crush on him overtakes that care for him (Glaciator 2), but she does care.
They can both be self-centered and can think of themselves, yes. But their reasons are entirely different. Chloe thinks about herself because she doesn't care about whether she hurts someone or not, because she considers herself better than them and derives joy from hurting them. Marinette is self-centered because she can be very anxious about things, and this can cause her to get stuck in her own head and forget to think of others. It's something she needs to work on, but she's also shown that she does try to work on it. Of course, Chloe isn't evil or anything and most of her worldview is derived from her abusive mother and her enabling father, but still.
But I will mention this:
I wish I could say the difference between them is that Marinette has higher moral ground than Chloe but after s5 I don't know if that's valid.
I do sort of agree. I harp on and on about the protagonist-centered morality that began pervading this show in Season 4, and that is once again the problem here. Marinette is not as bad as Chloe thanks to her intentions being pure and because of her willingness to grow and change, but the narrative started to justify her actions, which started getting worse. I think she can't be compared to Chloe, because the mistakes they make are different and stem from different situations and reasons, but my point that Marinette is never portrayed as being in the wrong still stands. She's the most amazing person in the world, and everyone must apologize to her.
Marinette is not a bully. She's not cruel and she's not arrogant. She's not like Chloe. But there's not just one type of mistake in the world, and Marinette is making an entirely different kind of egregious mistake by doubling down on her lying and covering for Gabriel, all after she spent a while deceiving her partner. She hasn't grown as a person, she hasn't learnt to consider other people and listen to them, she hasn't learnt not to deceive them (which is especially bad since that was the whole point of the conflict last season), she's doubled down on her flaws and her mistakes and she's gaslighting her boyfriend into loving his abuser. And the show portrays her as in the right.
(And not to be nitpicky here but I think the Season 5 finale dashed the idea that Kagami respects Adrien as a person, because she also seems to be on board with the lying and the gaslighting, so.)
I think it's not fair to compare Marinette to Chloe, but as of the Season 5 finale, she's awful in a completely different way. And honestly, I wish I could chalk it up to it being OOC for her, but it's not. She's poorly written as in she doesn't develop and is always justified, but honestly, it's not out of character for her, and so I can't even wave it away like that in my head. And she angers me more than Chloe does, because like, at least Chloe gets called out. But yeah, that's what I think.
Thank you for your ask!

one photo of quinn and nico, a friend of mine fueling the fire and three days later there is a meticulous google document detailing the history of these two captains and it’s so weird. they met on the ice once as teenagers in slovakia and everything before that point and after that point consists of whatever god there is absolutely fucking with their lives.
quinn declining to play in the chl set off the funniest chain of events that include a curse on these two so that they play each other once and then have no contact for three years. it happened twice. curse was broken with luke’s draft, kind of. it’s all freak injuries and chance occurences.
result of it being that nico and quinn have only played each other FOUR times in the last SIX years of their careers. separate conferences play a role but not that big of a role. it’s just luck, baby. quinn’s given two of his brothers away to this guy and he has no fucking clue who he is!
an example of one of those freak occurences as follows; quinn postponing his vancouver debut to play for michigan only to get a minor foot injury eight days before the canucks play the devils. he’s laid at home, his ncaa season’s bust and the ONLY game he is able to watch of the canucks doesn’t have nico in it. for absolutely no good reason. in a season where he plays 82% of games that season, this is the one nico isn’t in. no injury. just. then quinn magicks his foot to shape and he’s playing with the canucks two weeks later. GOD WHY?
and let’s not talk about slovakia, (cause that happened twice, too).

what’s the 2018 team Canada scandal about?? I’ve heard everyone talking about it but I have no clue what actually happened, if yk pls share and thank u sm in advance!!!
Apologies for the belated answer, your submission got buried in my inbox.
The entire scandal is about an alleged sexual assault that was supposed to involve up to eight of the players from the 2018 Juniors roster and CHL.
The team won gold that year and in June, they attended the Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf event, after which the group of players was supposed to assault an unnamed woman in a local hotel room.
According to the woman, in question, she met the players in a bar. One of them bought her alcoholic drinks, she got intoxicated and went with that said player to a hotel room where they (still more or less consensually - more or less said because she was drunk, but from the report, it seems that she agreed with that one happening) engaged in sexual acts.
However, after they were done, the player invited the rest of the guys into the room without her knowledge or consent, and over the next several hours they proceeded to assault her, despite her attempts to leave the room.
The day after, the woman's stepfather informed Hockey Canada about the assault and the organization informed the local police, which opened an investigation. Hockey Canada also simultaneously opened a third-party investigation using a Toronto Law firm.
In February of 2019, the police closed the criminal investigation. Hockey Canada also said that the woman declined to speak and cooperate with authorities.
In September 2020, Hockey Canada closed its own private investigation of the matter.
However, in April of 2022, the woman filed for damages worth of 3.55 million dollars from Hockey Canada, the Canadian Hockey League, and the eight unnamed players.
That lawsuit was settled in May of that year for an undisclosed amount outside of the court.
In June 2022 the Hockey Canada organization was bashed about the response to the situation during a Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage meeting as the players, who were present at the Gala in 2018, weren't in fact mandated to participate in the investigation. The president of the organization then also testified that Hockey Canada has reported THREE sexual assault complaints in recent years, including this incident.
The same month the federal funding of Hockey Canada was frozen. Scotiabank announced a pause in sponsoring, and so did Tim Hortons, and Imperial Oil. The House of Commons also approved the motion to pursue an independent investigation and government figures as high as Justin Trudeau got involved.
In July 2022, the third-party investigation and the local police investigation were re-opened. It was also revealed that members of the 2003 men's Juniors team are being investigated for a group sexual assault.
In the meantime, a few of the players from the 2018 Juniors roster publically denied the involvement - Victor Mete, Robert Thomas...
As of right now, the investigation is still ongoing and the identities of the players, who were involved, are still unknown. The same applies to the 2003 incident.

I think MM is cooked, he’s 1 of 2 players to not outright deny his involvement and there’s also the damning picture of him in the hotel room
I'm rolling with the idea of innocent until proven guilty (the report comes out). There's a LOT of moving pieces and we won't know for sure what happened until we get the report - and even then, we don't know how accurate the report will be to what really happened.
Under the cut, I'll explain more. TW we're going to be talking about the 2018 WJC scandal in-depth, so if you're sensitive to sexual assault themes, please don't read forward.
I'm scheduling this post because I'm honestly a little terrified about this one, for (hopefully) obvious reasons. Sorry for the delay on this, in advance. God, fuck, shit, I know this is a bad idea, and I'm reasonably sure this is gonna get me cancelled (as much as a Tumblr account can be cancelled) lol... please be nice?
Before I get into the discussion, a disclaimer: I am not denying the 2018 WJC rape case. I fully believe that it happened. What happened is terrible and disgusting and should never be allowed to exist in professional hockey. I am analyzing one player (Michael/Mikey McLeod) and his possible involvement in said scandal.
Innocent Until Proven Guilty: A Stereanalysis.
Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence. - United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN UDHR) Article 11 (look, international relations IS a useful major!)
Let's start off with the (very limited) facts of the case, from the lawsuit: At a gala in London, Ontario, celebrating the 2018 gold medal of the Canada World Junior's team, a woman (EM) meets a hockey player (Player 1). She becomes increasingly drunk and ends up going to Player 1's hotel room. They engage in sex (seemingly, at this point, consensual, though EM is intoxicated and possibly Player 1 is as well - the ethics of drunk sex are not my realm to parse out, and I will not be analyzing whether this specific instance is rape or not, as it is ultimately moot). Player 1 then invites his friends into the hotel room without EM's knowledge or consent. The number varies; in the lawsuit there are eight total players, but police say there are "reasonable grounds" for only five players. Important to note here is that most media says the lawsuit is against eight CHL players, among which 2018 WJC players are included. These five-to-eight players then proceed to sexually assault EM, intimidating her and blocking off exits. EM and her mother soon open a case with the local police on this issue. Player 1, upon being informed of this investigation by Hockey Canada, goes so far as to contact EM through Instagram and beseech her to "put an end to" the investigation.
Yikes.
We've got up to eight players (five that are going to be named in the report, it seems) that have raped EM. At least one of these, and likely several, but presumably not all, are members of the 2018 WJC roster. We will assume that all these facts are accurate.
On the picture: I can't find it anywhere. I'm looking. It doesn't help that seemingly ALL of Reddit is shut off with the API protests. Fire it my way, if you can. I've seen mentions of it in other places, so I will believe it exists, but I'd like to see it.
Mikey not saying anything doesn't mean he was or was not involved, in my opinion. It would be, frankly, stupid, to make comments on the investigation while it's pending. Remember how anything you say can and will be used against you? Exactly. Any legal advisor worth their salt would tell you to say as little as possible in front of the media.
Every other player on that team, barring (I think) Formenton and Batherson (both on the Sens), have denied they did anything. Formenton's contract wasn't re-inked and he's playing in Switzerland. Batherson was wearing an A when there was a recent injury on the Senators' roster. If we go Court of Public Opinion and claim Formenton is guilty and Batherson is innocent, we still have four-to-seven players' names to fill in. And it's entirely possible that none of those players were on the WJC roster.
Now, consider the NHL's position on this. They're just emerging from the wakes of the Kyle Beach scandal. Do they really need a second major sex scandal on their hands? Especially one at the hands of players and not staff? Would it not be easier to simply round up the players reasonably suspected to be part of the sexual assault and explain to them that yeah, you'll be taking a "personal" leave of absence or playing in Europe until this is resolved?
"But Stereax!" you say. "Cale Makar! Carter Hart! Those guys might be involved and they would be protected by the league because they're stars!" To this, I simply say: Mikey is not a star. As much as he plays a vital role on the Devils, he is far from a Jack Hughes-esque kind of player. I'm fairly certain they could Europe him with little or no real issues.
"But Stereax!" you say. "They did so little about Kyle Beach, even though Kane and Toews were publicly implicated! Nothing happened to them, and they're all but proven to have known and done nothing about it!" To this, I once again say: Mikey is not the face of a franchise. He is not a star. In the eyes of hockey, he is a replaceable 4C. You remove him from the team, you can put Shango or Boqvist in as the 4C and shuffle the third line accordingly.
Another thing to note is how, from the very limited information Mikey did give us, he stated that he was working with the authorities. If a person sexually assaulted someone else, and then ended up under an investigation, would that person willingly work with the authorities? Would they go so far as to say that on record? I'm doubtful.
Even if the NHL was to take no action, I sincerely believe that the Devils' organization would have done something if they were aware that Mikey was involved in the scandal. Unlike some organizations in the league (coughcoughRangerswhocough), the Devils tend to do things with general respect for humans. Like Fitz, who took the time to sit down with Severson and basically tell him that we'd love to keep him but he's too expensive, then help engineer the sign-and-trade to Columbus, getting Sevo the extra contract year. From a team that outwardly had a gender equality night, it would seem antithetical to the organization's roots to knowingly shelter a rapist. Hell, why would they write a FEATURE PIECE on McLeod in the playoffs? That's just asking for trouble.
Speaking of the playoffs - the report is dragging on. It's been months since we were promised it. Devils fans had worried that the report, if it would be indicting Mikey, was being postponed until the Devils were out of the playoffs so as not to mess the team up in the middle of their run. The run's been over for a month now. The report still isn't out. That's perhaps a good sign, that the report wasn't being held just so Mikey could have his "last hurrah", so to speak.
Think now about Ben Johnson. When he was found guilty of rape, the Devils terminated his contract basically immediately. Johnson never played for the Devils, splitting time between the AHL and ECHL affiliates (Albany Devils & Adirondack Thunder). Even so, it was a hard-line and immediate stance from the organization in a league that keeps trying to get Mitchell Miller ice time.
Or Jake Virtanen - though he was found not guilty of sexual assault by court, his contract was bought out and then he hauled ass to EHC Visp in the Swiss NL, where he got in enough fights with his teammates that the team basically told their manager they'd walk if he stayed. Recall Virtanen was a 6th overall pick in the NHL, probably the best non-lockout-era player the NL had ever seen, and he was that unpopular and much of a jackass.
Contrast this with Mikey, who the entire team seems to love. Take the Desert Island interviews, where every player asked says they'd take Mikey or Nate (the Superbuddies) or both onto a desert island for entertainment. Or how Luke's first dinner with the Devils was with the Superbuddies, Jack, and Dawson. Or generally how Mikey (and Nate) seem to parent half the young'uns on the team. Is Jack "our parents raised us to believe in gay rights and support the queer community" Hughes going to knowingly associate with a rapist? Is the team, which Jack has outright said was excited and had no issues with pride night and were looking forward to supporting that - is this a team that would all stick by someone who's committed sexual assault? Hockey culture and all, but I'd hope the Devils would be better than that.
And here we get to the most intriguing part of Clouder's Defense, what I call the 7+1 Theory. There have been whispers of this in the media and among circles of those in the know. The 7+1 Theory, most simply, is: Eight players were in the room where it happened. Seven sexually assaulted EM. One walked in and out, "unaware" of what was going on. (How "unaware" is up for debate. Some sources say that Player 8 was unsure whether whatever was happening was consensual and just resolved to stay out of it.) If this is the case, was Player 8 Mikey? We have no way of knowing.
And that's the long and short of it - we don't know. And we won't know until the report is released. And even when the report is released, how much will it say? How accurate will it be?
Now, if Mikey IS indicted in the report, all of this speculation is moot. However, I wouldn't go so far as to assume he is involved until we get the report - there are significant factors playing in his favor, which I've outlined above. I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting, but I've spent way too long on this post already...
When the names are named and the information is released, only then will I pass judgment. Until then, I'm going to stick with the UDHR and presume innocence, both for the sake of legal thought and for the sake of my own sanity.
Once again, please do not take ANY of this as me dismissing or belittling sexual assault in any way. What happened in that hotel room in Canada was horrific and should never be even implicitly approved of by the NHL. I hope this report comes out sooner rather than later and justice can finally be served.

“Our board frankly does not share the view that senior leadership should be replaced on the basis of what we consider to be substantial misinformation and unduly cynical attacks,” then-interim Hockey Canada board chair Andrea Skinner told parliamentarians last Tuesday – just days before her own resignation, and exactly a week before the organization’s CEO and entire board of directors stepped down. “I appreciate that others disagree with us, but our positions are based on the information that we have and understanding that Hockey Canada has an excellent reputation.”
What new information arose between Skinner’s statement and the mass resignations a week later? In the wake of Skinner’s testimony, multiple corporate sponsors, including Nike, Bauer, and Tim Horton’s walked away from Hockey Canada’s men’s program. Multiple provincial hockey governing bodies did, too. And the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, suggested that perhaps the federal government, from which Hockey Canada receives significant annual funding to oversee the sport at a minor level across Canada, ought to simply create a new body to do the job. All that was indeed technically new.
But really, the information available to Skinner, former CEO Scott Smith, and the rest of Hockey Canada’s directors when they resigned was the same information they had in June. That was when Smith first spoke to parliamentarians about a settlement Hockey Canada paid to the alleged victim of a sexual assault that she said involved multiple players from the 2018 under-20 world champion Canadian team. In fact, what Hockey Canada’s higher-ups knew this week and knew months ago is what they’ve likely always known, but have, naturally, avoided talking about. They know about silence.
Just months before Hockey Canada reached its settlement over the alleged 2018 incident, the Canadian Hockey League – the umbrella organization that oversees three major junior leagues across the country (and where the alleged 2018 assault perpetrators would have played at the time) – released the findings of two reports on “player wellbeing”. One was the results of a survey launched by an independent panel appointed in 2020 to ask hundreds of coaches, general managers, players, personnel, and families about off-ice misconduct in major junior hockey.
The survey found that misconduct – things like hazing, assault, and bullying – that “outside hockey would not be acceptable, has become embedded behaviour” within the CHL. Why wasn’t bad off-ice behaviour reported? For one, it had become accepted “as ‘normal’ for the sport.” The survey found that there was also confusion as to what qualified as a reportable event, as well as a lack of understanding of how to report one. But these were just procedural reasons for not talking. There were also emotional factors. Fear was one – the fear of reprisal, stigma, or further mistreatment. A sense of loyalty was another. There was also a general lack of trust in those to whom incidents would be reported and the belief that there might be insufficient consequences.
And, the panel concluded, there had simply been a general agreement in hockey that nothing should be said – a “code of silence.”
This summer, Hockey Canada sent out a survey to parents, coaches, and volunteers associated with minor hockey. Among the questions, Hockey Canada wanted to know how much people agreed with statements like “the level of criticism by the media toward Hockey Canada is overblown” and “incidents such as this are unlikely to happen again.” Respondents were annoyed. “How can they be so clueless?” wondered one Ottawa hockey mom to the CBC. Clueless is one way to put it.
Another way to see it is as completely logical. Hockey Canada doesn’t just develop players, it develops its own leadership at the same time. Many of the departed board members had been involved in the sport for decades. It’s fair to wonder if, as products of the very system they oversaw, they were simply incapable of projecting anything other than the silence around that (broken) system. Perhaps no better proof of that exists than when we last heard their collective public voice display their version of talking – that of Skinner’s aggressive push-back, delayed culpability, and attempts to frame the conversation in such a bizarre, accusatory space where no constructive discussion could ever happen. Maybe fittingly, it was a deliberate strategy of speaking while saying nothing at all for as long as possible. A delay tactic, if you will.
In its statement Friday, Hockey Canada said that an “urgent need for new leadership and perspectives” drove the mass exit of Hockey Canada’s directors. The new directors of Hockey Canada will surely have their work cut out for them. Canadians expect change. A good place to start might be to understand the definition of “urgent”.

I tend to think of the Of Man album as falling in the latter days of Cool Hand Luke. (Although, as CHL keeps putting out music this gets more confusing.) But it actually began in 2005. For context, that was one year after the release of The Fires of Life and 6 years before Of Man was released. I don’t remember exactly what I wrote first or when the ideas started coming to me, but I know for sure the first recording for “His Eyes” started in Spring or Summer of 2005.
During 2005, Cool Hand Luke was on hiatus. I spent the better part of that year touring with The Chariot on drums. We were on tour with Underoath for three months that year. I had known the Underoath guys from playing shows and festivals with them before they blew up. But I got to know several of them a lot better being on the road with them for so long. Tim McTague and I talked a lot about music, life, and God together. Somewhere along the way, I shared my idea for a concept record that told stories about Jesus from eyewitnesses.
Casey McBride was The Chariot’s merch guy/hype man/dude who would do anything if you dared him to. He and I became friends over the summer, and we started talking about possibly making music together. He would go on to play bass in Cool Hand Luke for a few years.
The best I can remember, we had a few days off in Atlanta. Tim recommended we go rehearse at Matt Goldman’s studio and maybe record something. At the time, Matt was at his old setup in Little Five, if that means anything to you. All you need to know is it was one big room, and it apparently used to be a rehearsal space for The Rolling Stones…or something like that. Also, if you don’t know who Matt Goldman is, he is a.) one of my favorite humans b.) an incredible producer and engineer. You may know him for records he made with Copeland, Underoath, Anathallo, The Chariot, My Epic etc. I am pretty sure this was the first time I ever recorded anything with Matt.
I remember Tim (on guitar), Casey (on bass), and I (on drums) sat up and started working through the song. I think I tracked the piano first so it would be a map for us. I had the skeleton, I had a few specific parts I wanted them to play (like the weird descending part when the crowd is yelling “Crucify), and I knew which parts of the music were supposed to correspond with the parts of the narrative. But Tim and Casey largely made up their own parts and really helped flesh the song out and bring it to life. Some of it was exactly what I had envisioned. Some of it changed quite a bit, but I loved all of it. We left with a rough mix that included drums, bass, guitar, and keys. We were stoked to finish it. But it would be 5 years before I would return to finish it.
Anyway, In 2009 I returned to seriously finishing the songs for Of Man. I started tracking songs a little at a time at The Brown Owl in Nashville with Conrad Snyder. But I knew I wanted to get back down to Atlanta to finish “His Eyes” and do a few other songs.
So, at some point, I ended up going to Atlanta to work with Matt Goldman again. When we originally tracked, I had not written all of the lyrics. I think I wrote them in 2008 from a composite of a few different accounts of Jesus’ trial and execution. I had plenty of time listen to the demo and think through what needed to happen to bring the song to completion.
The problem was that when I got to the studio in Atlanta, Matt could not find the hard drive he had the “His Eyes” tracks saved to. We searched high and low and only found some random scraps that weren’t any help. It was lost. You may think, “Well, just do it again.” But you’ve got to remember that Tim and Casey had played on it, and they were in other states. The likelihood of getting all of us back in the studio and remembering what in the world we did was pretty slim.
All I had was the rough mix from when we had originally tracked. I really didn’t want to track on top of this because there were some things I really didn’t like about the mix—like missing guitar parts. There were some parts that we had thought of as background that were very loud. And some parts that we had thought of as prominent that were quiet. There was also an entire bass part that I had planned to change.
Also, I wrote all of the songs as a chiasm—every song on the first half of the album had a song that corresponded on the second half. But “His Eyes” was the gate in the middle. I couldn’t just cut it from the album. The middle of a chiasm is the most important part.
So, we decided to just take this rough mix and track on top of it. There was one huge problem: at some point a click track came into the mix. No big deal if you’re listening to a demo, but this was going to be on the album. It sounded ridiculous.
If you know the song, you might know all the layered percussion that starts to build right before everything drops out and you hear the people yelling, “Crucify.” Well, that wasn’t originally going to be there. We had to do that in order to cover up the click track. My good friend Phil Smith who had toured as our drummer came to the studio and we did some geeky drumline stuff together on toms.
It took forever to track it a bunch of times and get it all clean, I wasn’t sure it would work. But Matt Goldman is really good at what he does, and God is really good at what He does, and all the percussion totally masked the click.  And now I can’t imagine the song without it.
For the crowd chanting “prophecy” and “crucify,” my friend David Kowalski invited a bunch of his friends to the studio. I knew a few of them and some of them I didn’t. At this point Goldman was in yet another studio, and the main tracking room was gigantic. So, he spread us out all over the room with mics in various places. I was the only one who had headphones to hear the track, so I stood in a corner and conducted everyone.
I had wanted Josh Scoggin (The Chariot, 68, etc.) to come do some vocals, including the “No!” screams. But he was tied up and couldn’t come to the studio. I decided to take a stab at the screams. I had done all of the clean vocals and that was all that was left. If you’ve listened to old CHL, you know I used to scream back in the day. But it had been a long time, and I didn’t know if I could do it with out my voice cracking and/or sounding lame.
Recording vocals is a very vulnerable thing. I love Matt, but I always feel a bit insecure doing vocals with him because I’m not the greatest singer. He works with some really great singers. You hear my best takes after an engineer has worked all their magic. But Matt heard all my voice cracks, sour notes, bad timing, and weird annunciation.
I went in a dark part of the studio and prayed. I tried to imagine that I was John, seeing the first nail being driven into the hand of my friend and my rabbi. I walked back up to the mic and went for it. Matt may have secretly thought it was garbage, but it felt right to me. (The photo on my Tumblr page is from that recording session)
I am still proud of the Of Man album, and I think “His Eyes” is an incredibly powerful song. I am honored to have been a part of it all. Every year people reach out and tell me that they listen to the album during Lent and Holy Week. Some of them I know and some I don’t. But it means more to me than I can express. Thank you for your kindness and encouragement. Soli Deo Gloria

10 Tips for Preventing Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Conductive Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can have a profound impact on your quality of life, affecting your ability to communicate, work, and enjoy daily activities. Fortunately, many cases of hearing loss are preventable. By taking proactive steps to protect your hearing, you can reduce the risk of both Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) and Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL). In this blog post, we'll explore ten valuable tips for preventing hearing loss and preserving your auditory health.
Tumblr media
1. Protect Your Ears from Loud Noise
Exposure to loud noises is one of the leading causes of SNHL and CHL. Wear hearing protection, such as earplugs or earmuffs, in noisy environments like concerts, construction sites, and factories. Limit the use of headphones or earbuds at high volumes.
2. Maintain Ear Hygiene
Proper ear hygiene is essential to prevent CHL caused by earwax blockages. Avoid inserting foreign objects like cotton swabs into your ears, as they can push wax deeper. If you experience earwax buildup, consult a healthcare professional for safe removal.
3. Avoid Smoking and Secondhand Smoke
Smoking is linked to a higher risk of hearing loss, including SNHL. If you smoke, consider quitting, and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke, which can also harm your auditory system.
4. Limit Alcohol Consumption
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a higher risk of SNHL. Moderating your alcohol intake can help protect your hearing.
5. Monitor Your Medications
Certain medications, including some antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs, can be ototoxic, meaning they can harm your hearing. Discuss the potential side effects of medications with your healthcare provider and explore alternative options when available.
6. Protect Your Ears While Swimming
Chronic exposure to water in the ear canal can lead to infections and potentially CHL. Use swimmer's earplugs or custom-fitted ear molds to prevent water from entering your ears while swimming or showering. Visit here learn more...
7. Stay Physically Active
Regular exercise promotes good circulation, which is essential for maintaining the health of your auditory system. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week.
8. Manage Stress
Chronic stress can contribute to hearing problems. Practice stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to protect your hearing and overall well-being.
Tumblr media
9. Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining the health of the delicate hair cells in your inner ear, which are essential for hearing. Drink an adequate amount of water daily to support auditory health.
10. Get Regular Hearing Check-ups
Regular hearing check-ups with an audiologist can help detect early signs of hearing loss and guide preventive measures. If you work in a noisy environment or have a family history of hearing loss, consider more frequent screenings.
In conclusion, protecting your hearing is a lifelong commitment. By following these ten tips and being mindful of your auditory health, you can reduce the risk of both Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Conductive Hearing Loss. Remember that prevention is key, and taking proactive measures today can lead to a lifetime of better hearing and improved quality of life.

Research for the speaker - Chlöe Swarbrick
Tumblr media
Chlöe Swarbrick is a politician for Auckland Central, Green Party. She is one of the youngest MPs (Member of Parliament) in New Zealand for over 40 years.
Her political achievements across her career are including drug reform, mental health, climate emergency, fossil fuel divestment, education work, housing and alcohol advertising.
Speech excerption
Plain and simple, nobody ever changes the world alone. And I just get amped when I see heaps of people deciding to get on board with that opportunity for change. Because in a country as small as ours it doesn't take much. I will keep going as long as I feel like I'm making change, but I don't wanna be here in 10 years because change is needed now.
Where does it come from?
The speech above is from a documentary film named 'OK Chlöe' directed by Charlotte Evans and produced by Letisha Tate-Dunning. This is a film talking about her story of being the MP in New Zealand.

Hanumana Chalisha Odia Book
Hindu religious hymn (stotra) in honour of Hanuman is known as the Hanuman Chalisa. With the exception of the Ramcharitmanas, it was written by Tulsidas in the Awadhi tongue. Since the Hanuman Chalisa contains 40 verses, the term "chls" is derived from "chls," which in Hindi is a symbol for the number 40. (excluding the couplets at the beginning and at the end).
One of the main figures in the Ramayana is Hanuman, a follower of Rama. The Shaiva belief holds that the god Hanuman is a manifestation of Shiva as well. Folklore extols Hanuman's virtues. The attributes of the god Hanuman, including his valour, wisdom, celibacy (brahmacharya), loyalty to Rama, and his various names, are described in the Hanuman Chalisa. Recitation or chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa is a common religious practice. The Hanuman Chalisa is the most popular hymn in praise of Hanuman, and is recited by millions of Hindus every day.
