Alexa H.
Expedition
Winding roads on the edge of the mountain, lost among jungles and thick foliage... a small, somewhat old truck that has more memories than you could ever imagine, takes you on an amazing trail and from there your journey continues.
An expedition into the unknown.

Talayote (Cynanchum racemosum). The name talayote is of Nahuatl origin (tlālayohtli), and is applied somewhat liberally on the internet to a number of plants in Apocynaceae. The common factor is human consumption of the unripe pods (after cooking); ayohtli is the word for squashes/pumpkins. Some species one might find included in a broad search for talayote include Gonolobus edulis, Gonolobus taylorianus, Gonolobus chloranthus, Gonolobus grandiflorus, Talayotea trachyantha, Matelea producta, Matelea parviflora, etc. The latter two are native to arid regions of the southwest U.S. and northern Mexico, and recorded use mentions seed consumption specifically, which makes sense as the pods are relatively thin-fleshed. In the case of the Gonolobus and Talayotea species, which are consumed in Mexico and Central America, many other common names (e.g. cahuayote, chicuipo, chicandua, chivita, atuz) exist. If Facebook posts are anything to go off of (and they're the best I have right now, aside from this paper), atuz seems to refer specifically to Talayotea, but otherwise it's a bit unclear how they get differentiated as vegetables, other than regional preference. There's a lot of culinary crossover with various curcubits, and that doesn't help. Nchee-lee is mentioned as the Mixtec name for the atuz.
This all bears a lot more research! In any case, I don't know how consumable Cynanchum racemosum itself is, or if the name was applied simply due to resemblance to known edible species. The plant itself is very attractive to pollinators, and has high resistance to drought and heat, so it's worth planting within its native range. It can climb other plants aggressively, but behaves pretty nicely on a fence without supplemental water to fuel it, which is how the plant in the photos was growing.

Tal vez hubiera podido visitarle si hubiera querido, tal vez no me hubiera accidentado.

¿CÓNOCE A DON MATÍAS?
