Continuing to make progress on my new bench. Got the legs finished and the stringers setup. Marked out and cut two of the mortises into the top. Gotta take a break and sharpen my chisels up before the next two.

#ThrowbackThursday Here's a great video from 2015 using the "Flaren," This tool is flat on one side and has an outcannel bevel on the other. Fitted with a socket handle, the flaren can be used effectively on either side for planing, dressing and as a clean-up tool, rolling off the flared edge. At Cascade Handcrafted, we use this tool daily, building our beautifully detailed, handcrafted log homes and cabins.

I love my new gouge chisel. It came out of the box arm shave sharp, and it’s only attacked me twice!

Ouch and Oh Me – Enduring Construction
A couple of days ago, I blogged about us being temples of the Holy Spirit. But we are very much still under construction. In fact, we are perpetual “works in progress”! And speaking of works in progress, let’s talk about the grand basilica, the Sagrada Familia in the heart of Barcelona, Spain. If you thought your home renovations took forever, this architectural marvel has been “coming soon” for…

Narex Premium Before/After Stropping
This is my 1" Narex Premium unhandled chisel.
The first photo is the bevel from the wood after chopping/paring. Gunk is likely wood fiber with a touch of rust since they sat in the shop for a day or two prior to the photo.
The second is after stropping w/ 15K compound on 2mm buffalo leather glued to plywood.
I've never sharpened the side bevels so we can compare to the grind straight from the factory, which was and is very consistent and sharp.
I strop frequently, though my approach is slow and methodical. I put my finger as close to the edge as possible to keep the bevel flat and then with firm downward pressure slowly draw the chisel across the compound.
After I see iron swarf start to collect in the wax I'll check my bevel and usually I'm about 1/2 there. Once I'm satisfied I'll flip it over the edge and pull the back flat across a few times, careful not to pull it over the edge.

Went through and sharpened my chisels. Mostly a motley crew or hand me downs. Gotta say the ones I got from Aldi a few years ago might be my favorites after they get a good sharpening in (also I don't feel guilty abusing them a bit).
My general process is to use the honing guide and have the main face be around 25 degrees (this is only really needed occasionally), then cut a higher angle edge, 30 degrees, on the cutting edge. It means I only have to hit that 30degree grind for the next few sharpening sessions.
For the higher angle cuts I tend to do a few passes at 1000 till the edge is crisp, then a few at 4000, then place the flat on the 4000 and cut off the "burr"

13 years ago I ruined this chisel’s edge by trying to sharpen it with a dremel.
I’ve tried three different times in the last week to get it back to the right angle to even start putting a good edge on it. Now, after three hours of hard work tonight, the edge is straight, 25°, and it shaves hair off my arm with light pressure. I can even see my reflection clearly.
All by hand. A very relaxing evening.
EDIT: that’s a Norwegian flag reflected, not me.
