best KJ Charles novels? I have a bunch of long flights coming up…
best standalones:
Think of England - mystery! intrigue! it's safer to be caught in flagrante delicto by one's hosts than to be caught spying, so take your trousers off, my good sir!
Band Sinister - a series of unfortunate events introduces country virgin and landed scoundrel. NO MURDER AT ALL in this one. lowest stakes KJC novel by far (if you don't care about A Lady's Reputation!).
The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting - fortune hunter gets sniffed out by his mark's uncle, loses fantastically to him at cards, offers to pay in kind. this one is just. so. horny.
best series:
The Doomsday Books (2 books) - these are so fun. smugglers, hidden treasure, Kent accents, beetles?!, terrible relatives, romance, murder, etc. all that good KJC shit.
The Will Darling Adventures (3 books) - post-war secret society shenanigans, ft. current bookseller, previous vicious killer in the trenches. splashes of PTSD, Bright Young Things, gangsters, the secret service, communists, sidecars. truly rip-roaring. and the sex scenes are top notch.

Mandate Of Heaven And Supreme Justice
In the Zhou dynasty, the concept of the Mandate of Heaven, revolutionary for Chinese philosophy, emerged and took root for millennia. According to the then political-religious narrative, the Mandate of Heaven was given to the most worthy and righteous one. While from the very beginning it served as an encouraging rationale for overthrowing the Shang dynasty, more and more ambiguities arose as the…

While excavating two large buildings in the ruins of the palace in the city of Yueyang, the researchers from the Institute of Archaeology at the China Academy of Social Sciences were surprised to make the discovery.
The toilet is estimated to be between 2,200 and 2,400 years old, from between the Warring States Period to the beginning of the Han Dynasty. The find is intriguing as the invention of the modern flush toilets is thought to be from Victorian England.
Fan Mingyang, a design expert in ancient tools, said the toilet is "deceptively advanced" because of the water drainage system that is used in the modern day, according to China's Global Times newspaper.
A toilet bowl, other broken parts, and a pipe that led to an outdoor pit were discovered last summer. The "luxury object" would likely have only been used by high-ranking members of the palace found in China's Shaanxi province, Liu Rui, a member of the excavation team, told China Daily.

"History
17th Century
During the Qing dynasty of South China, there was The Golden Orchid Society. For 300 years, beginning in the early 1640s, this order of women stood against marriage. For many women, these heterosexual unions were restrictive, thrust upon them, and abusive. The Golden Orchid Society stood in opposition to society's expectations of the time, welcoming with open arms any woman looking to avoid the normative life.
It was practice for married women in China to comb their hair a certain way to say they were not available, so the Golden Orchid Society created "self-combing women". These women would wear their hair just as married women would, and a ceremony would be held to celebrate this choice. This practice was used by women who did not wish to marry or have romantic/sexual partnerships. It is likely at least some of them held similar feelings about romance and partnerships as many modern day aros."
This brings me an immeasurable amount of joy

Objectively the funniest team-up in all of Skulduggery Pleasant
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A redraw of the "can't stand her fake ass" meme. The first panel has the words "Bitches be like" "can't stand her fake ass!" in impact font. The picture is a drawing of China Sorrows, a white woman with very vibrant blue eyes and black hair, wearing make-up, teardrop shaped earrings, a blue boat-neck dress and a teardrop necklace. She has her arms crossed and is glaring at Anton Shudder, a muscular irish-eastern asian man with long, black hair that is streaked with gray. His eyes are purple and there are scars on his throat. He has dark spots under his eyes, and is wearing a white button-up and a black coat. He is glaring back at China Sorrows. The next panel has the text "*1 alternate dimension later*" "Me and the bestie" everything else is in impact font except for "alternate dimension" which is hastily hand-written. In the second Image China and Anton are now standing in front of a treeline. They are both wearing black turtlenecks and dark-colored coats, except China's coat has a light-colored fluffy lining. China's hair is now short, and she is wearing less make-up and smiling, seemingly lost in thought. She has small dark spots under her eyes. Anton's hair is slightly grayer and tied in a braid, and the dark spots under his eyes are even more prominent. His scars now extend to his face, 4 scratches reaching up to his cheekbone. He also has a small scar on his nose. He is giving a thumbs up and smiling, but looks tired and slightly out of it./ End ID]

Hall of Patriarchs: Little Shrine In The Grotto
A modest Hall of Patriarchs (祖師殿) in its austere simplicity. Dating from the Song dynasty (but probably much older), the temple is hidden in the Jinshui Grotto (金洞), Yongtai mountains, the Mingshanshi (名山室), Fuzhou.
These mountains, listed in the classic source “The Book of Tao” (《道書》) the seventh blessed place under the Heavens, are associated with both Taoist and Buddhist saints. Their possible connection with the Seven Ancestors (七祖圖) of the White Lotus (白蓮) Sect is also curious.
