Get ready to celebrate regional pride as ChillOut Festival's set to shine

Get ready to celebrate regional pride as ChillOut Festival's set to shine
Australia’s largest and longest-running regional pride festival ChillOut returns in March, turning spa country into pride country.
ChillOut Festival celebrates the Labour Day long weekend with a Rainbow Circus Spectacular amplifying regional pride.
Held in the spa country of Daylesford in March, the team are pulling plenty of tricks out of their topcoat amidst their annual program.
“In the last five years, we’ve managed to capture the best data we’ve ever been able to from attendees.”
“From where they’re coming from, their ages, their demographic and what they want to see.”ChillOut President Matt Clarke said,
“The overwhelming response we’ve found is people would prefer Daylesford for a pride festival.
“The big ones in the city have a different feel and come with increased risk for many.
“For some that can be stigma or attack, or fear of identification as some of the things.
“The irony is in regional Victoria many would think of us as the minority.
“But the overwhelming number of people attending ChillOut feel more safe and secure in Daylesford.”
Less than two months away, the vibrant weekend hosts diverse events featuring an array of LGBTQ+ performers.

Entertainment under the big top
Starting with humble beginnings as a relaxing weekend for queers to wind down after Sydney Mardi Gras, the festival has evolved over two decades.
ChillOut now transforms the Hepburn Shire into an annual beacon of pride that has community travel from all around Australia to attend.
“People specifically wait for ChillOut every year not only to celebrate their pride but because they feel safe as well,”
“Some feel that ChillOut is the only time they feel safe about holding hands down the street,” Matt said,
“It’s that inclusivity and safety that people feel here that makes us one of the most populated events on the calendar.”
Spankie Jackzon and Frock Hudson are back hosting the Welcome Event on Thursday night.
With Tanzar returning to The Daylesford Hotel on Friday bringing the tunes for their Welcome Drinks.
Friday will also see a Rainbow Spectacular headlined by Marcia Hines including The Voice Australia’s Emily-Jance Conidi, Spankie Jackzon, Cath Jamieson and DJ Rosie Rae.
The usual favourite events return for another year, including Bush Dance, Carnival Day, Pool Party and Poof Doof.
The Youth Muster returns including Drag Storytime with Frock Hudson, Gabriella Labucci and Nate Byrnes.
Matching the Circus theme is a Big Top of entertainment that’s making its way to town with comedy, cabaret and more.
Big Top Burlesque brings a cheeky sequined spectacular with Ziegfeld Boy, Brenda Bressed Mama Alto and Milo Hartil.
And a world of comedy awaits with Kyran Nicholson, Rhys Nicholson, Geraldine Hickey and Joel Creasey bringing the laughs.

Celebrating pride your way
“People love our major events that happen every year, but we have created plenty of other opportunities around town for those that want it.”
“There’s so much for people to enjoy in the region that we wanted to give them experiences that they can step into as much as they’d like,” Matt said.
“We know a large percentage of people who come into the Daylesford over the weekend don’t necessarily buy tickets for events,”
“But they love the hospitality and community spirit in our little villages,”
“Everyone has their way of feeling part of the festival.
While the program is filled with plenty of events for all, the crew at ChillOut know it’s about more than that.
“We are so lucky how much pride fills the entire town in March,”
“Every year we have about 30,000 people who come to Daylesford at this time,” Matt said,
“We know about a third of those people buy tickets to the event, so everyone has a different reason for coming.”
“For some, it is the hospitality and the experiences, for others it’s events like the Carnival Day in the park.”
“But the most important thing we want people to remember is to sort your accommodation NOW!”
Don’t wait till the last minute to sort your accommodation, check out the local listing here.
With more artist announcements on the way, the lineup for Carnival Day is already on fire.
Rogue Traders Natalie Bassingthwaighte and James Ash return to heat things up.
ARIA Award-winning singer and songwriter Joanne takes the mic.
And songwriter Bec Sandridge brings her brand of folky 80s rock nostalgic Spaghetti Pop to the stage.
You can grab tickets to all the events here.
ChillOut Festival takes over the Hepburn Shire from the 6th to the 10th of March.

ChillOut Festival wants to host biggest ever Drag Storytime
Tumblr media
Victoria’s ChillOut Festival has invited everyone to come along as they attempt to host Australia’s biggest ever Drag Storytime on Saturday.
Australia’s longest-running regional LGBTQIA+ festival returns to Daylesford, Victoria this Labour Day weekend from Thursday (March 7) to Monday (March 11).
There’s a big lineup of events on across the beautiful towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs across 2024’s Boots and Bling-themed weekend.
On Saturday, drag performers Art Simone (pictured above), Frock Hudson, Gabriella Labucci, and ABC star Nate Byrne will host a big outdoor Drag Storytime event in Victoria Park.
The Drag Storytime event is at 3pm and is free. It will follow ChillOut’s Youth Muster In the Park and Rainbow Family Picnic In The Park, which kick off earlier in the day.
Art Simone and Nate Byrne will MC in the Park from 11am, with free kids activities all day.
Courtney Act and Spankie Jackzon at ChillOut
There are over 50 events on the ChillOut Festival calendar. Drag superstar Courtney Act and Drag Race Down Under winner Spankie Jackzon are travelling there to show their queer country pride this year.
Courtney will join Nate Byrne in hosting events including the Bush Dance and the Carnival. Spankie Jackzon will appear at multiple events, including the Carnival.

Today's mix:
Feed Your Head by Michael Dog 1993 Psybient / Ambient / Tribal Ambient / Dub / Downtempo / New Age / Trance
Well, it's definitely not my cuppa, folks, but if you want some early 90s UK spacey ambient acid chillout psychedelia, the Planet Dog label's Feed Your Head series definitely seems like a good place to look. Coming out of a hippy-ish British space rock tradition, Planet Dog, like a whole lot of other UK labels that launched at around roughly the same time, originally started out as uniquely quirky and eclectic club nights, first under the name of Club Dog in the mid-80s, and then as the more popular Megadog afterwards. And here for 1993, the biggest brain behind the operation, Michael Dog, puts together a partially mixed set that reflects upon his new label's then-current electronically-driven state.
Tumblr media
Similar to what the San Francisco underground had been putting down at around the same time—as the Haight-Ashbury Grateful Dead spirit of the 60s collided with the contemporaneous techno-libertarian vision of Silicon Valley—this comp pulls ambient, dub, spiritually new-agey eastern tribal sounds, and trance all together, yielding a linked crop of tunes that feels fit for something like Burning Man, which is a festival that you couldn't pay me to ever attend, unless it was enough for me to quit my day job and explore the history of modern music full-time! 😁
And speaking of San Francisco, it also can't be ignored where this series' title obviously derived itself from: Grace Slick's repeated, finishing line on the late 60s psych rock staple, "White Rabbit," by SF heroes Jefferson Airplane.
youtube
(by the way, isn't it bonkers that the same band that made that song would transition to Jefferson Starship, and then just Starship, and then release that ridiculous early 80s hit of "We Built This City" too?!)
Tumblr media
Anyhoo, I don't mind cyberhippy music altogether, but I'm much more partial to the downtempo side than I am to the ambient one, which means that I prefer the music to have some kind of consistent drumbeat that I can nod my head along to. And the only song on this album that really seems to hit me in that regard comes courtesy of the one-and-only Banco de Gaia, an inimitable pro's pro when it comes to that beautifully lush and psychedelic globally-quilted chillout sound. A more well-known Washington, D.C. duo like Thievery Corporation would take a similar approach to newer generations and masterfully enmesh themselves in that massive global chillout scene that would flourish between the late 90s and mid-2000s, but a song like BdG's "Qurna (Haj Ali's Birthday Mix)" is more or less emblematic of where that type of sound comes from, as it lays beautiful blends of psychedelic and string synths alongside nature sounds, hand-drums, and my sought after steady backbeat 😎.
Another thing worth mentioning here is that even though I don't really like this mix very much, kudos still need to go out to Michael Dog for how he went about making it, because rather than just doing normal transitions like almost every DJ does, he went out of his own way to create passages himself to link these songs together to make the whole experience feel more seamless. Not the first time I've heard of this happening—in fact, some in-house person did it for one of those pre-Jock Jams, MTV Party to Go mixes at Tommy Boy a couple years afterwards—but definitely not a commonplace practice by any means.
Also, the liner notes on this release give a shout out to Beyond Records, another UK label that was in a similar vein to Planet Dog at the same time, whose own Ambient Dub series inspired PD to put out this Feed Your Head one. I prefer Ambient Dub as a whole over this first volume of FYH, and you can find a bunch of my favorites from that series in the earliest sections of my own coveted 90s Downtempo playlists—word to the wise, though: the YouTube one has more Ambient Dub stuff than the Spotify one, including an extra super tasty cut from Banco de Gaia himself 😋.
And one other thing I wanna mention here is how a lot of the music on this album seems to have come from offshoots and side projects of already well-established psychedelic and space rock acts. Astralasia, the group that opens this comp up, are from the Magic Mushroom Band, duo System 7 came from Gong, and Eat Static, Nodens Ictus, and The Ullulators were all directly linked to Ozric Tentacles. All part of the same UK scene and all traveling along this sort of newfangled psychedelic electronic club thing together too. Interesting times, to say the least.
So, once again, not the biggest fan of this broad, early 90s psychonautic ambient vibe, but if that's your thing, or you think that it very well might be your thing, this release feels like a pretty wide-ranging and exemplary capsule of it.
Listen to the full mix here.

I've got the bit between my teeth now, smashing out the hour's walk from the train station to put in another shift at the Great Stoodley Litter Mine. It was time to deal with the abandoned festival tent I'd previously found, cleaned off, flattened and stuffed into bin bags. The single continuous fibre glass pole sewn into the tent's fabric had been the problem, preventing me getting it small enough to go in my big Aiguille pack - so today I took in a hacksaw, splitting the pole into short sections then rolling the fabric into a compact bundle. Just the walk back into the valley with chillout tunes on the headphones for the bus home, beating the afternoon rain.
It feels like the end is in sight here now: another two or three 90l rucsac loads bagging up other wankers' shite and I'll have cleared out this patch of woodland.

Lumi's first pride experience
except very little of this is going to end up being about the pride event itself and more the chaos that ensued during the rest of the trip. excluding the uh. issues with that girl i like. im sure you've all seen enough of that.
for anyone curious, the event in question that I attended was ChillOut Festival in Daylesford, Australia. I refrained from posting this while I was there as to not dox myself lmao
Saturday
so, after arriving at the place we were staying after a very very long drive, we go into Daylesford, which was about 15-20 minutes from where we were staying. not after almost getting locked out of the house, which one of my friends had to climb onto the deck of and pray the back door was unlocked so we could get back in. The parts of the event we were interested in going to had already ended by the time we got there, had sold out, or were probably meant for people older than ourselves (we were all 15-16, except for my friend's mum)
we buy food and go back to the house we were staying at. we had a makeshift karaoke night, then watched descendants and k-12, then stayed up until 2am talking about the most random shit, then fell asleep.
Sunday
we attend the pride street parade!! which was super fun. not really sure what to say about it? it was a pride parade. it was really cool though.
after that, we went to carnivale!! I bought some pronoun pins and stickers from an artist who was selling their work there. the music was really good, too. again, not sure what to write? it was just. fun. a lot of fun.
a few people told me they liked my outfit, especially my shoes. i was wearing some very cool shoes tbh
however, I am autistic so I did get quite overwhelmed by the crowds and noise later into the event. we ended up leaving at around 3-4pm. I wouldn't count that as a bad experience though.
we also made new friends there!! whom i did get the phone numbers and snapchats of. however i havent spoken to them since. um. but, one of the other friends i went with has been talking to them quite a lot. im very bad at starting conversations so uhh yeah. this is the friend who i have a crush on and who ended up developing a crush on the guy we met... a not-so-fun part of the trip.. anyway.
overall
I had a lot of fun!! we're planning to go back next year if we can. not sure what else to write. if you live in that area tho definitely attend next year if you can

Electric Sufi - Breathe In Love
This is Breathe in Love, the new album by Electric Sufi. A first single 'O Ignis Spiritus' will be released on 1 February 2023, the album will be released later that year.
Electric Sufi are Sheffield based Professor of Music and Sound Archaeologist at Huddersfield University Rupert Till, Manchester based singer-songwriter and environmental activist Sarah Yaseen and Nottingham based multi-instrumentalist / University lecturer Mina Mikhael Salama.
Rupert has produced ambient dance, chillout and electronic music under the the moniker Professor Chill throughout his career, including the album Dub Archaeology released in 2018. He’s also written the book Pop Cult which delves into the mysteries of music and spirituality, participated in the BBC TV series Civilisations as well as numerous other TV and radio shows, plus written articles in The Quietus, Huffington Post and New Scientist. His extensive research projects have been wide and varied, covering a multitude of subjects ranging from ‘The influences of Religion on British Club Culture and Electronic Dance music’ to ‘Sound Archaeology, Acoustics and Cave Art’.
Sarah, whose family roots are in Kashmir, is known in world music circles as a singer in UK Womad favourites Rafiki Jazz and Danish all-woman ensemble Radiant Arcadia. In Electric Sufi she sings in Urdu, Punjabi, Persian, Latin and English – and by doing so, draws upon a wide range of cultural influences. Inspired by Qawwali (Islamic devotional singing from India) and Ghazals (Arabic poetry), she has one foot firmly placed in a contemporary multicultural world and the other in the ancient lyrical and musical traditions on which she draws.
Mina, a Coptic Christian from Alexandria, Egypt, came to the UK as a refugee, taking asylum here from persecution in his homeland. He has since contributed much to UK culture through his performances at WOMAD, Edinburgh Festival, The Southbank, London as well as Cardiff, Leicester, Manchester and beyond. Along with Rupert, Mina has also contributed to the BBC TV series Civilisations where he demonstrated a 30,000-year-old Isturitz Vulture bone flute. On an international level, Mina has contributed to the music score on Disney’s Aladdin, directed by Guy Richie and starring Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott.
With a first performance at Bradford’s Kala Sangam Arts Centre, which received much applause from a diverse audience, this trio brings much collectively and individually to the Electric Sufi sound, resulting in a rich tapestry of cultural and musical layers of influence that their album Breathe In Love explores in much detail. Their modern interpretation of O Ignis Spiritus is a wonderful introduction to this enchanted world and their message of hope.
