Creature Of The Night — Zelda Spellman
Summary: Three times you try and fight your sleep paralysis demon alone, and the one time Zelda helps you be rid of it for good.
Word Count: 1,164
Warnings: Mentions of nightmares and sleep paralysis, minor description of a demon
1. Alone
You toss and turn in your bed, plagued by the relentless grip of another potential night filled with awful dreams. You’d gotten yourself in too deep and this was the price you paid for messing with magics far above your pay grade. It had been nearing a week of these restless nights and you knew it was going to start to show on your face soon enough.
Finally, sleep reaches you, but the peace of it doesn’t last. The room is cloaked in darkness, and you struggle to move a muscle. Panic rises within you as you sense a malevolent presence in the room. A sinister figure hovers over you, though you can’t quite make out it’s shape.
"No," you whisper, your voice barely audible. You muster all the strength you can, attempting to break free from the invisible restraints. But the more you fight, the stronger the force seems to become. Your heart races, and your breath quickens as the all too real nightmare tightens its hold on you.
Suddenly, you wake with a gasp, your heart pounding in your chest. Beads of sweat dot your forehead, and you glance around, relieved to find yourself back in your bedroom. It was just another dream, a horrifyingly real dream.
You cast your gaze beside you, to Zelda, undisturbed by your night terror. She knew nothing of them, and you had wanted it that way. You knew the lecture that would surely come when you told her of what you’d done, and the consequences you were facing. You didn’t want that. You’d solve this on your own.
2. Confession
Exhausted, you close your eyes. It’s still early, but you’re hoping to drift into peaceful slumber this time. Hilda had prepared you a special brew when you’d told her you hadn’t been sleeping well. You were thankful she didn’t ask any further questions at the time. It may not ultimately dispel all your problems, but to fix them you would need rest, so it was worth the effort to try.
You sleep, but the darkness returns, along with the menacing presence. Your body freezes, and the figure draws closer, its malevolence palpable. It was clearer this time, as if the fog between its world and yours was thinning. You attempt to clench your already balled up fists, determination welling up within you. This time, you won't let fear overcome you. You wouldn’t let it win.
With every ounce of your willpower, you manage to move a finger, then a hand. The figure only perches at the end of your bed, as if watching, daring you to try and rid yourself of it. Slowly, your body awakens from its paralysis and you sit up in bed, breathing heavily. The figure retreats into the shadows, its power having weakened enough to allow you a temporary escape.
A soft light fills the room as the door creaks open. Zelda, elegant and composed, steps in, her pleasant features twisting with concern when she saw the state of you. "Darling, are you alright," she asked, her voice calm and even.
You heave a sigh. You couldn’t keep this from her any longer. You recount the recent horrors you’ve been facing, explaining the sensation of being trapped and tormented. Zelda listens attentively, her hand resting gently on yours. "I've encountered creatures of darkness before," she reassures you. "And I've learned that confronting them head on is often the best way to banish them."
3. Struggle
Emboldened by Zelda's words from the night before, you steel your resolve to face the night ahead. Despite your best efforts, the creature —no, the demon— keeps becoming clearer. You can start to see its gnarled and disturbing features, skin that looks like it’s rotting away, eyes that glow unnaturally.
The demon also gets closer. First at your feet, then you feel the weight of it putting pressure on your chest. You thought it would be working by now. Your fear of the thing has lessened, but the creature will just not go away.
In the darkest hour of the night, the shadows always converge despite any warding you might attempt. The figure materializes, its eyes gleaming, leering at you. This time, you stare it down, unwavering. You remember Zelda's words, her guidance echoing in your mind. Yet, it was all for naught. The demon only glared back at you, as you lay stiff as stone. It still had the power.
When you finally broke its hold and woke up, this time Zelda wasn’t oblivious to your silent battle. "Are you going to ask for my help, or am I going to have to force it on you," she asked.
Your muscles ached, but you shifted over to Zelda's side of the bed and wrapped your arms around her middle. "I’ve tried, Zelds. I can’t do it myself. Please help…but not tonight. I can’t tonight."
Zelda nodded and ran her hand over your hair, shushing you, hoping to soothe your frayed nerves. She knew you couldn’t go on like this. Tomorrow she’d help you put an end to it.
+ 1. Banished
The following night, you were weary from weeks of exhaustion, but somehow filled with a renewed sense of hope that your nightmarish hell-scape of nightly paralysis would be over. You and Zelda performed a bonding spell that would allow her to join you in your dream state, something akin to astral projection, but not as dangerous, save for the demon you’d both be facing.
It started as it always did, your vision filling with shadow until complete darkness enveloped. Then it appeared, glowing eyes revealing its location in the depths of the inky blackness. With a surge of strength, you use your voice confront the demon, your voice steady and resolute. "You have no power over me," you declared, your words infused with confidence.
Zelda stands at the edge of the room, unseen by the demon. "Together, we will cast you out," she intones, her voice coming together with yours. The room pulses with energy as you and Zelda combine your forces and wills to send this demon back to hell.
The shadows writhe and shrink as your banishment spell begins to take effect, and the demon lets out an ear splitting scream, fighting to suffocate you and weaken the spell's power so it can escape. This time, it isn’t strong enough.
The demon's form slowly crumbles until it disintegrates into nothingness. The room fills with a warm light, dispelling the darkness that plagued your nights. You wake, breathless but triumphant. You look to Zelda and she smiled sympathetically. "Next time, you tell me when a demon is after you. You don’t have to suffer alone. Not while I’m here."
With a mixture of exhaustion and relief, you smile back and close your eyes, ready to embrace a peaceful night's sleep for once. Zelda remains by your side, a guardian in the night, ensuring that the demon never again holds sway over your slumber.

***THE SCHOOL PLAY (SPELLWELL)***
A.N.: So here's a little Spellwell (Mary Wardwell x Zelda Spellman) smut shot I wrote long ago and wanted to share on this platform, hope you guys like it! If you do, I have a few more Spellwell, Madam Spellman and Mirelle spicy shots you might as well enjoy.
Zelda quickly walked around Baxter High's long corridors, looking for her niece. She had spent the last ten minutes trying to find the classroom her and her mates were using to prepare for the school play tonight. The witch only wanted to make sure Sabrina was doing fine, feeling herself and to wish her good luck. She knew her just well enough to know that nerves must be killing her already.
Black velvet stilettos clicked relentlessly on the floor. Her delicious curves were wrapped up in a tight satin black dress, whose cut on the back reached to her waist, and the just-below-the-knee length didn't give her much space to move properly. The dress was held over her shoulders by thin straps and fiery curls cascaded down caressing them gently. There was no doubt the ginger looked uterly ravishing.
As her fast steps turned another corner Zelda groaned in exhasperation. Maybe she could've been able to find that damn class much sooner if she wasn't so distracted. However, her body had decided to betray her, overcoming her with this completely ridiculous, out of place (but ardent nontheless) desire the moment she had let her gaze slip over Sabrina's civics and history teacher: Miss Wardwell. The younger woman had been wearing a formal nude blouse, tugged up in a black pencil skirt that oh so fine accentuated her soft curves. A thick mane of dark tresses rested over her shoulders and a slight shade of red covered her lips. Zelda hadn't been able to contain a gasp at the unusually bold election (being Mary who we talk about), but looking upon the gesture on her face she once again discovered that heart warming shyness and sweetness the brunette just seemed to expell. Mary's innocence and unawareness of just how beautiful she looked surprisingly turned the redhead on. She had been trying to supress her sinful thoughts for over an hour now and it was turning her mad.
Finally, she saw a sign that announced the play's dressing room and sighed in relief. Inmediately, she furrowed her brow, realizing no sound was coming out of the room. Weren't teenagers supposed to be a little more...noisy? Slowing her pace until it was impossible to hear her coming, the redhead approached the door. Quick, strong breathing could be heard from the inside. She silently cracked the door open, just a bit, wanting to get a discreet view of what was going on in there. Through the slight crack of the door, Zelda admired as Mary was trying to put on the rest of her play costume. With her back to the door and a victorian skirt already on, the teacher desperately attempted to close a white corset, failing cumsily. The witch watched in awe, completely paralized by the sight of soft obscure curls brushing against freckled skin. Mary's heavy breathing wasn't helping either. Her mind was suddenly running wild with want. She couldn't help but let out a shaky sigh when the brunette's hands moved her hair to the side, showing her neck covered in a thin layer of glistening sweat. Oh how she longed to be the one causing her to sweat and gasp heavily...Zelda could feel her arousal growing stronger in the pit of her stomach, the heat building up between her thighs at the scene. She craved for more.
Without much thinking, as if her body was now taking the lead for her, Zelda slowly entered the room, leaving her heels behind in order not to startle the other woman just yet. As she approached, she could clearly feel the scent that emanated from Mary's skin. She smelled like sandal, with a sweet fresh lavander note. Her slightly trembling hands reached to pull her hair aside and she finally grasped her wrists, stopping her from moving.
-Here, let me help you with that-Zelda tugged lazily at the corset's strings, her raspy and low voice startling Mary. The teacher turned around abruptly to be welcomed by the older woman's body so close to her she had to hold her breath for a second. Ocean blue eyes looked into emerald ones, nervousness and a slight relief noticeable in the restless pupils.
-Oh M-Miss Spellman! Yo-you scared me! It's o-ok I can d-do it by myself...please don't w-worry.- Mary stuttered.
Zelda's grasp went tighter around her wrists, enough not to hurt her. Only then, the teacher got to notice her blown wide pupils, eyes filled with unmistakable lust. The brunette's troath went dry.
- I insist. Now, would you mind to bend slightly fordward so I can properly reach the bottom of this lovely piece?
Zelda delighted in the furious blush that covered the woman's cheeks, neck and chest; lips slightly parted as her breathing seemed to run wilder again. Finally, Mary obliged, turning around so her bare back was now in full display for Zelda's eyes to feast on.
-That's it, good girl...- Zelda's husky voice praised, the ginger smirked to herself as she felt Mary shiver violently at the praise. Zelda bent her own body over Mary's, pressing against the woman's back and letting her feel her warm breasts rubbing her from behind through the thin material of her dress. Slowly, she ran a finger down her spine, eliciting a low muffled grunt the brunette tried to suffocate as she reached to grasp Zelda's free hand.
-My,my...you are excited, aren't you?- Zelda purred, finally owning a moan from the brunette woman. Mary's eyes went wide as she pressed her mouth shut. The redhead beauty chuckled and quickly grabbed the teacher's waist, turning her around so she was now facing her, and pressed their bodies together impossibly close. With a single twist of her alabaster fingers, Zelda freed Mary from the skirt, leaving her only in an unclosed corset and lace hosiery. Zelda moaned in delight.
-How sinfully naughty you are Mary, so enticing...what would your students think, you here melting under my fingers, clearly aroused in my arms?
Zelda grinned as the brunette pressed her eyes shut, letting her head fall back in pleasure and pulling her in for a kiss. The witch stopped her.
-As much as I'd love to bite and devour those lips right now dear, I infinitely prefer to mark your whole body with crimson kisses- the redhead whispered in her ear, seeing as Mary twisted in pure and blissful delight. Without a second thought, Zelda's fingers slipped between Mary's legs to caress where she needed her the most. She was soaked.
-Mmmm...look how wet we are, what a mess we have down here, so eager for my touch, almost dripping in my hand. What if I stopped now Mary?- Zelda teased- You have a play to attend to after all dear.
-Fuck that damn play Zelda... I want to be yours. Right now.
The unexpectedly bold demand made Zelda lose her last ounce of sense and restraining.Oh she would be all hers. Night was young and the play long forgotten.

Part 1 of looking into some of the technical cinematography aspects of the show
(or, why does Dead Boy Detectives look Like That?)
(update 6/30/24: there's now a part 2! check it out here)
Dead Boy Detectives has some interesting things going on with the cameras. You probably noticed it at some point while watching the show. Whether it was the weird blurs or the sort-of-fisheye, there’s something about many of the shots that doesn’t look the way many people expect TV shows to look.
The main reason why is because it uses an anamorphic lens instead of a spherical lens. These lenses are pretty different from spherical lenses, and the recent rise of anamorphic lenses in TV has not been without some pushback, as viewers unaccustomed to them may find the look weird, distorted, or that it pulls their focus away from the content. Whether you enjoy how Dead Boy Detectives looks or find the cinematography distracting, this post is designed to explain the different effects that the lens has on the show.
This post is very long and very graphics heavy (I made lots of gifs to illustrate my points) so the rest is under a read more.
What is an anamorphic lens and what is it used for?
To begin with, a bit of history and technical info. Say you’re making a movie at most any point before the mid-'90s and you want it to be widescreen. However, the 35mm film you’re shooting on has a smaller aspect ratio (closer to a square than widescreen). You could use letterboxing (black bars on top and bottom) but then you waste the top and bottom parts of the film, and it ends up being slightly lower in ‘resolution.’ The solution: use a lens that records the full height onto the film, but squishes the picture horizontally so that it fills up the whole film frame without any letterboxing. Then, a projector (or a computer) can stretch it out again to display the whole thing in widescreen. The kind of lens that can do that is an anamorphic lens. They've technically been around since before the 1920s but were mostly used between the 1950s and the 1990s.
Up until sort of recently, television networks broadcasted using a smaller aspect ratio that they required shows to be in, and TV shows were not given the kind of cinematography budgets that movies were afforded. Anamorphic lenses are expensive and for widescreen, so they really just weren’t used for TV shows. Instead, a spherical lens was used, which is just the standard lens you think of when you picture a camera lens.
In the 90s, new flat/spherical film formats came out that allowed for widescreen (one of the popular ones being Super 35) caused anamorphic lenses to drastically drop in popularity. However, there has been a recent resurgence, one that you’ve probably subconsciously noticed in both film and television.
In the last 10-15 years, TV has been given larger and larger budgets. Additionally, the rise of streaming services and the use of phones and computers to watch shows rather than actual televisions has meant that networks have started allowing wider aspect ratios, paving the way for anamorphic lenses to begin to be used for series.
The history of these lens’ usage means they’re associated with a ‘cinematic’ look. They have a lot of characteristic effects that are not really ‘natural’ and depending on the viewer, this either enhances the experience or detracts from it.
Lots of recent series have been embracing these lenses (to varying degrees of success), including The Witcher, Sandman, Shōgun, Narcos: Mexico, The Mandalorian, Andor and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Doctor Who also started using anamorphic lenses at the switch to the 13th Doctor, so that may be a good reference point. For some of these, it’s a very subtle look, for others, the lens choice is glaringly obvious and overdone (I’m looking at you Sabrina), and sometimes, as is the case with Dead Boy Detectives, it’s really obvious but it remains an effective and compelling choice.
Why use an anamorphic lens in the 21st century when you could just use a spherical lens?
Anamorphic lenses create a look that some filmmakers desire, whether for their associations with a more cinematic look or their sometimes unusual quirks. In a film and tv world filled with spherical lenses that are nice, clean, and precise, anamorphic lenses introduce some irregularity and character. Making an informed decision on what kind of lens to use can enhance different themes of the work.
I want to briefly bring up Moonlight to illustrate this point. Go watch the trailer if you haven’t seen it, and you’ll probably see some parallels with the cinematography of Dead Boy Detectives. There’s less of the ‘radial’ look, but otherwise, there’s a lot of the same kinds of things. Moonlight uses an anamorphic lens and it makes the whole thing look dream-like, nostalgic, and a bit like we’re getting into the character’s heads. To me, it indicates that the story is being filtered through people. We’re not detached from the characters, observing them. The story we are watching is personal, emotional, and necessitates intimacy.
Dead Boy Detectives really benefits from the same visual effects. This is not because it enhances a dream-like or nostalgic quality, but because in the context of the show, it makes it look a bit otherworldly, magical, or otherwise supernatural. Additionally, the constraints of the lens means we get lots of focusing in on individual characters, with nice long looks at their faces allowing for more reflection on their dialogue and reactions.
So, here’s 5 different effects of anamorphic lenses to point out to you all. Starting with the one that allows us to easily identify that anamorphic lenses are being used in the first place.
You’ve probably heard of bokeh before. It's the way the lens renders the direct sources of light that are in the background but out-of-focus. You can see in this shot of Jenny how all the string lights are not circular, but elongated. On a spherical lens, these would be round.
In this next shot of the Cat King, the candles around the floor are all those elliptical shapes. Additionally, lots of other details in the background that aren’t from direct light sources also have an elongated shape. This is sometimes called waterfall bokeh.
Finally, check out this shot of one of the cats. Not only are the lights in the background irregular and elongated, but if you look to the left where the ‘horizon’ line is, there's a series of elliptical shapes where the light hits the edge of the docks.
The bokeh effect is one of those things that just happens because of the lens, and makes it pretty easy to identify that an anamorphic lens is being used. Unlike some of the other effects I’ll mention, I don’t have much to say about how this does or doesn’t add to the visuals.
Breathing is how the field of view changes when you refocus to a subject closer or farther from the lens. While spherical lenses also breathe, there’s a much more distorted look to the breathing that occurs with an anamorphic lens.
Lets start with this shot:
You can see how much the frame widens when the focus shifts from the jar of coins to Jenny. It affects the edges much more than the middle of the frame. Here’s the same shot, but with some of the features outlined (forgive my messy outlining, I used my laptop trackpad) so you can see the movement.
The frame widens when the focus goes from the foreground to the background. It appears like the whole shot is being stretched apart horizontally and compressed vertically.
However, it also does the reverse, narrowing as the focus moves from the background to the foreground.
(also in that last shot of hell, notice how the two points of light in the background elongate into those oval bokeh once they are no longer in focus)
Breathing is a very dramatic way of refocusing, and it forces us to pay attention to different things. In the shot of the Night Nurse, we have a light but the important thing after it turns on is not the light but the reaction that the people have to the cause of the light. In that shot of Niko and Edwin, it’s telling us: listen to Niko. In the shot of hell, it’s not letting us forget what the characters are running from.
The next effect is the lens flare. You can get a lens flare from a spherical lens too, but anamorphic lenses typically generate strong, horizontal flares. A spherical lens would typically create a more radial flare, with multiple lines shooting out in different directions from the light source like rays from the sun.
We see these all over the show, sometimes they’re very prominent, such as in these shots with obvious light sources:
And sometimes they're a bit more subtle. Take this shot of Edwin, Charles, and Crystal on the dock:
While the lens flare at the top of the frame has a clear source, there’s a bunch of other horizontal lines cutting across near the middle and bottom half of the frame. These likely come from light sources outside of the frame.
Some directors, cinematographers, and other creators really like anamorphic flares. Others don’t. For a show with so many dark scenes that have colorful and dramatic lighting, the lens flares seem to enhance this. They are also a constant reminder of the interaction between the lights and the camera, kind of a fingerprint of the production. Sure, they make it seem more ‘cinematic,’ but I think they also ground us in the physicality of the production. (Kind of ironic given the lack of physicality of the main characters, and also you could consider the flares themselves to be the ghosts of the lights and the camera!)
Barrel distortion is where we start getting into why exactly the show looks the way it does. This is basically a subtle fisheye effect. Because of the squishing and stretching of the footage, anamorphic lenses have more distortion than spherical lenses, and it is strongest around the edges.
You can see it most clearly in shots that have lots of vertical lines. They are relatively straight in the middle of the frame, but the closer to the edges, the more they are warped.
Looking at that shame shot of Niko in the bathroom, I have set it to stop at 3 different spots. Pay attention to the shape of the edge of the door.
At the start, it’s curved outward, like an open parentheses: (
Then, in the middle, it’s a vertical line: |
Finally, as the door passes all the way across the frame to the opposite side, it curves inward, like a closed parentheses: )
Again, notice how the lines in this shot of the Lost & Found Department change as they move from the outside towards the center. The door has an outward bulge at the beginning but becomes more 'normal’ shaped as it gets further away.
Anamorphic lenses can also have a pretty shallow depth of field and it’s used a lot in this show which is why we get a lot of those centered close-ups, and why we get that ‘radial blur.’
The center of the frame is where the actors are least likely to be distorted, meaning its easiest to have just one character in the dead center (pun intended). With a shallow depth of field, the background is out of focus, and since the actor is in the center, the background gets the most affected by the barrel distortion, leading to the sense that the background has been radially blurred.
This blurred background with a strong, centered foreground really makes objects in the foreground pop. We are then able to really focus in on different objects and characters. It brings immediacy and intimacy. Here, we have nothing to do but consider Charles. He isn’t speaking so we must consider his reaction to what’s being said.
Also, the further a character is from the center of a shot, the more they are distorted, such as Edwin and Charles in this still:
This kind of distortion definitely lends a more unnatural look to the shots, which definitely supports a show about ghosts and the supernatural. If the subjects are able to see things in our world in a way the viewers cannot, then why display the physical world the way we see it?
Finally, we have focus falloff. This is (like some of the other effects) a distortion that occurs around the edges. Here, the focus decreases the further from the center of the frame even if they’re all about the same distance from the camera.
In this shot of the Tongue & Tail, the sign 'Butcher Shop’ is clear and legible. But imagine if that sign was up in the top left or right corners, where things start to get blurry. We probably wouldn’t be able to read it.
It's also visible in this shot of Edwin. Not only does the floor get blurrier the further you get from the center, but you can see how the rope is less in focus in very top and very bottom of the frame.
The falloff (combined with the barrel distortion) is how we get the really unique dream-like look of the Edwin and Niko scene on the roof in Episode 8. (If you’re having a hard time spotting the falloff here, look at their legs)
When you start looking for falloff in this show, you start to see it everywhere. It’s easiest to spot in the corners of shots, but you can usually see all the way around the edges.
Look at the corners of this still of Edwin, or the way the top and bottom of Niko’s rent envelope aren’t as clear as the middle of it.
Or in this still, look at Charles’ jacket. The arm closest to the center has a much more defined line between it and the background compared to the arm closest to the edge.
This blur definitely is one of the more noticeable effects in the show, and it’s good at focusing our attention on the center of the frame. It guides the viewer exactly to what we should be looking at. We get tons of centered shots in this show because of this and the barrel distortion.
The falloff makes the show look softer and artistic, sometimes painterly or impressionistic. More than any other effect, the falloff is what makes me feel like I’m watching a dream or a vision. It puts us into the sensation of being fully immersed in a story.
I would argue that all of these effects (but especially the last two) not only enhace the supernatural aspect of the show, but they help us fall in love with the characters. They focus us on their faces, and encourage us to reflect on their motivations, reactions, and thoughts. The lens is telling us that we are not to take things at face value. It’s not letting us forget that there are multiple people and multiple stories involved, that things are blurry around the edges, and that things are not perfect and clean-cut.
-----------
Sometime in the next week or so I’ll be working on part 2, where we’ll take a closer look at the cinematography of Edwin’s flashback to 1916 in Episode 1. It's posted! Read it here.
I really wanted to highlight the work of the cinematographers, Marc Laliberté, Craig Powell, and Pierre Gill because it’s clear that there was so much care and intention put into every aspect of this show.
I’m so glad fans of this show are really embracing the work of different crew members, like the work of costume designer Kelli Dunsmore (and if you somehow haven’t seen @captainfantasticalright's posts about the costumes and other aspects of the show, please go check them out right now. My roommates and I have a kind of 'stop everything, new costume analysis dropped' attitude towards their posts, and their approach to show analysis was definiteily an inspiration for this)
If you want to read more about anamorphic lenses, the article Why ‘Shogun’ (and the Rest of TV) Is Slightly Out of Focus in The Ringer is about Shōgun and the rise of anamorphic lenses in TV (Marc Laliberté also worked on a few episodes of Shōgun) and it's a great place to start.
Finally, I want to first thank @skyvoice for these tags on one of my gifsets for semi-inspiring this post (I was already considering making this but these made it into a reality).

20 questions for writers
Thanks for the tag @capybaraonabicycle, this was really fun!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
24!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
116,345
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mainly Doctor Who, but I write for a lot of fandoms :
Doctor Who (8) Engrenages (2) One Day at a Time (2) Kaamelott (2) ER (2) Stranger Things (2) The Wheel of Time (1) The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (1) Grace and Frankie (1) (this one is a crossover tho) Spellslinger (1) Big Little Lies (1) Les combattantes (1) Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (1) (also a crossover) HPI (1) (the counterpart to the G&F crossover)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
My extended fam : a multi-companion DW story that focuses on the companions staying on Earth and how they all deal with alien invasions and other wibbly-wobbly stuffs when the Doctor isn't around.
Ways to Heal : my current work in progress ! It's set after season 13 and deals with the aftermath of it, and more generally with all the various traumas all the companions have suffered while and after travelling with the Doctor.
Who am I if I don't have what it takes : a Stranger Things one-shot dealing with El's trauma and especially her trauma after season 4 and what happened to Max.
Night conversation : a One Day at a Time one-shot dealing with Elena's reaction to her father not accepting her sexuality.
Day two : You. Me. Handcuffs : a very short one-shot I wrote for a DW fanfic challenge. It's about Donna and the Doctor, and River.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always !! Sometimes it's quite short, or late, or in private but I always try to answer, because I love to have conversations about what I write and what it means to people <3
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I honestly don't know tbh, because I'm very much a hurt/comfort kind of girl, and I always try to end on, at least, a hopeful note.
That being said, it's definitely Misunderstood! it's probably the only full-angst fic I've ever written but I was in my feels after WOT 207 and I wrote it through my tears (literally) 😭I think my no beta tag sums up pretty well my feelings 😬
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I think it's probably Remonter la pente. I'm still quite proud of this story, it's 6 chapters of healing and talking and processing traumas and I ended it on quite a high note, so yeah, I really like it!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No, never! I sometimes have people who comment what part of the story or characterisation they don't really agree on but it's always nice and more conversational than anything ☺
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No, and I cringe at the mere thought of it ^^
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I do and I love it ! That's actually how I started to write fanfictions, and my first ever posted fanfiction was a DW and CAOS fanfiction.
I don't know what counts as a "crazy" crossover but the most unexpected must be Waiting on a miracle! It took a lot of liberties and interpretations on my part to imagine a situation where Morgane from HPI and Grace from Grace & Frankie could meet but I like what I came up with and it was really fun to write.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't think so either!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope! I've wanted to, and sometimes I started planning it with friends but it never went further than that because *gestures at life in general*
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Well, I think it's the Doctor and River! They're certainly the ones I've written the most for ^^ Then they're followed by the Ponds, Guenièvre and Arthur from Kaamelott and Joyce and Hopper from Stranger Things. But tbh, I don't write that many "shippy" fanfics? I write a loooot of found family stuffs so ships aren't what I focus on the most, or at least, I focus on them more as a part of (found) family dynamics, you know?
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Well, I don't have that many unfinished posted wips, I tend to not post my unfinished works, or not to post until I'm sure I'm committed to finish it. I guess I'd like to add chapters and one-shots to The path of funny stories because we greatly lack fanfictions for the Spellslinger series but it's quite hard for me to write fanfictions for books, so I don't know if I'll ever get around to it ^^
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think dialogues and chracterisation? That's what I get complimented the most for in the comments at least! I also know I write stories with a big cast quite well, or so I've been told ^^ Which tracks, because dialogues, characterisation and interactions between people is what I like writing the most, and what I pay the most attention to!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions!! It's directly correlated to my love of writing dialogues but I know I'm not very good and I struggle a lot with establishing scenes, descrbing the surroundings and what the characters are doing besides just talking. I try to pay attention to it and to work on my description and tone skills but I doesn't come as easy.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
It's hard!! I've only ever done it for my One Day at a Time fanfics but, besides my lack of confidence in Spanish at the time, I find it really hard to make it feel natural and to make the scene flow when switching between languages.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Chilling adventures of Sabrina !
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
That's haaaaard! How am I supposed to choose between my babies like that?
I have a soft spot for My Extended Fam because it was my longest fanfic for a while, and I absolutely adored writing it. I grew a lot as a writer while writing it and it's still one of my most beloved fanfic, which makes me really happy and proud.
Remonter la pente is also one of my favourite, because I think it's one of the first fanfic for which I really felt like a part of a fandom community and like I truly shared the stories with people, especially thanks to @moon-arts02- who wonderfully illustrated every chapter 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I'll tag some of my writer mutuals but absolutely 0 pressures, this was just a lot of fun to do, and I loved the retrospective it made me do through my writing :
@bourbon-ontherocks, @hemerae-ramblings, @everybodyknows-everybodydies, @bwayfan25, @thehappyegg, @saecookie, @imdefyingmavity, @cecret-with-a-c

— 🎬 just announced, GABRIELLE " GABY " CALLOWAY is casted as aria montgomery in upcoming pretty little liars reboot. the twenty four year old is trending as people are debating if the perfectly timed eyeroll, patron filled shot glasses, the deafening sound of designer heels making contact with marble floors, champagne for breakfast, staring through someone that they are known for is enough to make them as good as original. a quick google search shows that their fans call them loyal, but internet trolls think they’re more aloof. i guess their newest interview for variety where they talk about how she purposely misses calls from people will let people to know them better.

A few years ago, @chasingowlsdownalleys and I watched The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina together. Ambrose was obviously our favorite character, and yet that poor guy was stuck with the thankless role of Cassandra - knowing everything happening was bad idea but not being able to stop it.
By the final season, we had summed up Sabrina and Ambrose's relationship as such:
Sabrina: "Hey, so you know how things are terrible? I have this incredibly reckless way to fix it."
Ambrose: "Do not do that. I have a library full of books saying that will end horribly."
Sabrina: "Nah, I got this. It'll be fine. We're in an impossible problem and this is the best solution."
Ambrose: *gestures at books with a vein popping on his forehead* "BUT THE BOOKS!"
*One episode later*
Sabrina: "Hey, so that thing I did kind of solved problem A, but it had all these unforeseen consequences that are actually way worse than the issue before. But don't worry, I have a new plan! It's a little reckless, but I got this. "
Rinse and repeat.
@chasingowlsdownalleys and I were discussing this in detail and how stressed Ambrose was all the time and how unfortunate that was as our favorite character. Not only that, but it seemed we were the only ones aware of the toll it took on Ambrose. And she then declared "And I, for one, care about Ambrose Spellman's blood pressure."
And that statement has been rattling around in my mind all through season 2 of Daredevil. Poor Foggy Nelson. I feel so bad he's been perpetually left with the mess Matt has left behind, and it only got worse this season. Like when Matt signs him up defending Frank Castle for the trial of the century, then proceeds to immediately bail on planning the case, and flake out throughout it like the world's worse partner in a group project. And then when he does show up, he fails to do the one task Foggy set for him (even though that's more Frank's or the Kingpin's fault than Matt's). And after all this, Foggy is left to be confronted by Matt's sort-of girlfriend/co-worker who can't understand why Matt is a mess. A woman Foggy almost dated himself, and is now stuck in the uncomfortable position of neither lying to her, or spilling Matt's secret. Keep in mind, Matt's actions cause a chain reaction to basically every stressful thing that happens to Foggy this season, including Foggy getting shot.
I mean, I love how Foggy gained all this confidence in himself as a lawyer as part of this. I love people seeing his value and the opportunities he's going to have because of it. Even if it's the end of Nelson and Murdock, I'm glad Foggy can get some breathing room from Matt so his career isn't so tied to the mess Matt is, because I think it'll give their friendship some chance to breathe and maybe even recover. But through all that, I still couldn't help repeating to myself in my head, almost gleefully, like a secret: "And I, for one, care about Foggy Nelson's blood pressure."
#daredevil season 2#foggy nelson#daredevil#matt murdock#Like I understand you're full of demons and Catholic guilt Matt#But you can't take 5 minutes to visit your best friend who got shot taking a case you wanted and was exacerbated by your influence/absence?#And then go back to stewing in your own guilt alone on the roof watching out for ninjas#the chilling adventures of sabrina#ambrose spellman#sabrina spellman

🍂 Tv Shows That *Feel* Like Fall 🍂
Fall is a time of falling leaves, harvesting pumpkins or corn, brisk chilly mornings, and sweaters! It evokes the coziest of memories. So grab a blanket and cup of your favorite autumn drink and cozy up with one of these shows perfect for the season! Each of these shows give off those fun fall feels. Some even have Fall or Halloween themed episodes that I love to go back to every year!
In no particular order…
Gilmore Girls
Comfort watching at its finest! No show embodies that fall feeling quite like Gilmore Girls! It has all those fuzzy Fall feels (and some great wintery ones too, but that’s a discussion for another day). The opening shot alone exhibits vibrant autumnal scenery. Even the theme song gives off all of those nostalgic warm feelings. Autumn in Stars Hollow somehow just feels right. It feels like the perfect small town to enjoy all the fun festivities and colorful people. There’s a great Autumn harvest episode to boot, with all the right sights and food! Even the Thanksgiving episodes are worth the watch.
Goosebumps
You really cannot go wrong with Goosebumps for spooky season watching. Each episode tells a different chilling tale sure to get you in the Halloween spirit. The Haunted Mask and The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight are must sees for this time of year. It's The Twilight Zone for kids.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Watching Buffy and the Scooby Gang take on all sorts of big bads, what could be better? Whether you’re into vampires, witches, demons of all varieties, experiments gone wrong, and so on…Buffy has it all. With three Halloween episodes and at least one really great Thanksgiving episode, there’s plenty of holiday centric stuff too.
American Horror Story
Just like Buffy, American Horror Story offers a variety of creepy creatures, death and mayhem. Each season tells one singular story (with the exception of Double Feature which tells two). You can binge through a season in no time, and never have to watch the others if you so choose. I’d suggest most of the seasons, but there’s just something about Coven that feels oh so right. It depicts a coven of witches descended from the original Salem witches. It’s full of history (some real life, might I add) and fun supernatural debauchery.
Stranger Things
Stranger Things has everything you are looking for wrapped up in an 80s nostalgic bow. Something is just not quite right in Hawkins Indiana, and it’s up to these young small town residents to figure it out. It’s full of the adventure and early childhood friendship that we all often find ourselves a little extra nostalgic for this time of year. There’s a really great Halloween episode, too, that will evoke fond memories for any 80s kid.
Wednesday
While there are no official Halloween episodes of the show (yet), the whole show gives off those spooky season vibes. The heart of the first season is a supernatural mystery that Wednesday gets wrapped up trying to solve. There’s scary looking creatures, a special school for “gifted” students, and even some throwbacks to the Addams Family movies. Wednesday even dawns a pilgrim outfit again.
Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (And/Or Sabrina The Teenage Witch)
Whether you’re looking for something dark or something light-hearted, the world of Sabrina Spellman is full of magic and fun. Her birthday is on Halloween, afterall! Both shows bring something different to the table but you really cannot go wrong with either one. And there’s plenty of great Halloween episodes between them.
The Twilight Zone
Another great anthology show. This one tells self-contained stories in each episode -much like Goosebumps of Are You Afraid Of The Dark was for kids. The series includes everything from horror and supernatural, to even science fiction and a little comedy. It has appearances from the who's who of Hollywood at the time. And the theme song is to die-for! Gone are the days of tv hosts introducing you to what you are about to see. And i’d say just about nobody did it better than Rod Serling. And the black and white format adds to the creepiness, I feel.
(Honorable Mentions: The Munsters/ The Addams Family, Are You Afraid Of The Dark, Supernatural, & Charmed to name a few)

20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag, @lilolilyr!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
135 fics total!
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
2,436,430 words (jfc hahah)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Ever? Listing them in vague order of when I started writing for them: Supergirl, Wynonna Earp, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Grace and Frankie, This Way Up, Once Upon a Time, Madre Solo hay Dos (just on Tumblr), Abbott Elementary, Hacks, and Julia
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
ALL of them are Supergirl from back in the early-ish days of the show when it was a pretty massive (by femslash standards, I suppose) and very active fandom! It's actually so interesting seeing how absolutely nothing I've written in more than half a decade even shows up, since I've largely switched to smaller fandoms since then.
But the top 5 fics by kudos are:
Stronger Together, a collection of one-shots for various Supergirl ships (with a few gen fics mixed in), which has nearly 5k kudos (WILD to me as someone now in a fandom with maybe 25 people total haha)
Welcome to the Gayborhood, my first ever fic, a looong Sanvers and Supercorp professor AU that still keeps the alien/supernatural elements of canon
6,500 miles away...but getting closer, a Sanvers epistolary fic that my wife and I actually co-wrote and posted 1 letter/email per day every day for many months
Noise Complaint, a Sanvers next-door neighbor AU that, hilariously, given its placement in the top 5 here, is what catalyzed a series of events that led to me very much leaving the fandom (and fandom writ large for nearly a year)
Supercat Sanvers 2020, a Sanvers and Supercat political AU that was maybe one of the last long-form works I wrote before moving out of DC!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I really try to! Sometimes if it's from a person I know well, I end up responding via DMs, esp if there are questions about what comes next, plotting elements, etc., that I don't necessary want everyone to see while the fic is still being posted, but mostly I try to respond on AO3. I've gotten a bit worse in the past few years just because I'll manage to eke out a bit of time to write, which puts me behind on my work, and then I don't leave myself time to respond, and by the time I DO have time, it feels awkwardly late to do so. But even if I don't respond, I absolutely love/cherish/adore/etc. every single kind comment I've ever been given <3
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Forgoten, but not Gone - a Sanvers amnesia AU set post-breakup that's heavy on the angst with a rather ambiguous ending. I got talked into writing a part 2 that resolves the angst haha, but taken on it's own it's definitely my angstiest ending!
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Huh idk! Most of my fics end on fairly happy, if a bit open, endings. I'm not a big fan of having all the loose ends tied up, and I realllyyyy don't do the marriage/2 kids/white picket fence epilogue, so I guess maybe the political AU has to be up there because it actually envisions a world where a queer woman wins the presidency on a progressive platform, and that feels rather utopian 🙃
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not in a while, though I used to back in the days, like super vitriolic shit (big fandoms with too-big emotions, man... which has really kept me away maybe forever from those kinds of fandoms!)
9. Do you write smut?
Haha very much so. I've written and posted before about why, but I really believe there's so much interesting character work and exploration that can be done by exploring characters' pleasures, their desires (both thwarted and realized), their fantasies, etc. Obviously smut isn't the only way to do this, but fanfic feels like one of the few venues where it's a real possibility!
10. Do you write crossovers?
Nah, not really. I've written a handful of bring characters x and y into the universe of another show fics, but that feels mostly different. Every so often I'll borrow vague character outlines for tertiary characters in other fics just to see if folks recognize them (had Grace Hanson as a grumpy background character in a Sanvers fic set at PT for instance hah)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Once or twice, but we got them taken down
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yeah, one of my SG fics was translated into Russian! I'm not sure if it's still up (tbh I can't recall which one; it's been a long time!) I've also had a couple podfics now made of my fics, one of which I still need to go listen to when I get the time!!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yeah! The long-form Sanvers epistolary fic my wife and I co-wrote together, and a group of Supercat authors got together and did a delightfully chaotic round robin, each writing one sentence, then setting a timer for the next person to write the next sentence, etc., until we had Intergalactic Standard Cuddling
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Oh man, I really don't know that I have a favorite! I really appreciate what various ships can offer me at different times - there are certain themes that make sense to explore with one pairing but not at all with another, or certain AUs that work in one fandom but not really in another. Basically, if a show is giving me multiple female characters who interact in canon in ways that go beyond existing near each other, I'm intrigued, and if these characters actually get depth and complexity, I'm probably in! There are, however, some ships that I might not end up feeling fannish/creative about even though I love them as ships (I talked a lot to @trying-to-get-somewhere-real about this recently, actually!), so it's hard to name a favorite when the metrics get all wonky!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
I don't want to say never, but I have a Cat-centric fic that'll end on Supercat that just has a lot of angst that coincided with a period of unexpected loss and grief in my own life in ways that have made it really hard to get back into even now (it just feels so...enmeshed with that moment, even though the timing was utterly coincidental)
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I do a good job with dialogue and getting characters' voices down - I'm really into the character side of things (which is also what gets me invested fannishly in shows! I want a show that cares about developing their characters first and foremost vs. a show where plot takes priority)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Certain kinds of action scenes haha - also I tire easily of writing things that feel repetitive to things I've done/written before (this was more of an issue when I took prompts)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Largely, this isn't something I've had to deal with much outside of maybe a few phrases and sentences from multilingual characters. I've talked before about how it was actually the language/translation barrier that kept me from writing for Madre Solo hay Dos. I don't speak Spanish, and getting a show entirely via the Netflix-provided translations meant 1) I was fairly certain there were some word choice/dialect peculiarities I was missing, and 2) I couldn't catch the rhythms of their speech, the cadence of their voices at least in ways that corresponded to the specific words. For me, voice matters so much, and it really felt like a barrier to not have access to the source language because I felt like I couldn't do these two women justice!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Supergirl
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh I've answered this elsewhere with 2-3 works, and tbh I don't think it's changed since then! I'm actually far more interested in others' favorite fics of mine because it's so interesting to think about the question of *what* sticks with a person from yours (it's often so idiosyncratic!!)
I'm getting to this pretty late, so I won't tag anyone, assuming many people already have been, but if ya see this and want to participate, feel free to give me a tag! I always love seeing people talk about their own writing :)
