@chillichats god, i wish i'd thought of something like this. here, have a bit of shanks pov i've written on a similar topic as a reward for being funnier than me:

yasopp chose this moment to walk into the room, see shanks, and whistle. “oh boy, boss, sake already?”

“oh, you can’t be that surprised,” roux said, pouring a round of ales for the rest of them.  “buggy’s on board.”

a few men nodded, as if to say yeah, fair enough.

shanks sighed.  that… made sense, actually.  he took up the flask of sake, considered pouring for himself despite the bad luck, decided his luck could go to hell, and chugged it.  someone whistled.  beckman rolled his eyes, but produced a second flask.

“speaking of buggy,” yasopp said, shooting a spike of fear through shanks, “was anyone expecting the clown look?  because i was not expecting the clown look.”  heads shook around the room.  some people were giving shanks slightly judgmental looks.

“well, i knew about it before today,” shanks said. “but when i first saw it, it took me totally by surprise.”  taking a sip of sake, shanks mused, “though i suppose it was the obvious choice.”

“in what world is ‘clown’ an obvious choice?” gab asked.

shanks traced a circle in front of his face.  “easiest way to hide that nose in plain sight.”  understanding, and a bit of laughter, circled the room.

my family unearthed a whoooole bunch of loose papers and keepsakes from my fathers side of the family just a couple days ago, and my dad thought i'd be interested in reading through the letters of my great-great-aunt, or however she's related to me. and he was right!

and as i sat down with the letters, i realised... that i could barely make out a word. because it was all - ALL - written in cursive. and i can't read cursive. I could barely make out the vowels, let alone differentiate between the b's and l's and t's and such.

it was kind of funny, but mostly sad. there were letters from her parents, and from her friends, and from her children, and i couldn't understand any of the sentiments they shared. i couldn't learn about her as a person, because those words were inaccessible to me.

On one hand I understand not teaching cursive in school anymore, because it actually is slower than regular handwriting and almost everything is typed on a keyboard now anyways.

On the other hand, so much of our (even recent!) history was written in cursive, and having a whole generation of kids who can't read letters written by their grandparents, momentos saved by their great-grandparents, or even photo albums from theur immediate family seems like a dangerously quick way to detach us from previous generations.

And on the third, related but slightly malformed hand, I feel bad that yet another form of small, everyday art that brings joy in the middle of mundane tasks, which celebrates personality and individual style and self-expression, is about to fade into obscurity because it wasn't efficient enough for today's world to put up with.

Like... if we continue to whittle away the small arts out of every day life, what's going to be left except stark, ruthless pragmatism?

Maybe writing a grocery list is less mundane when you get to feel elegant for a moment. Maybe you're a little more proud of what you write when you see it flow together like a painting

Okay!!! I know we are all wishing the Ao3 volunteers the best of luck!!! However, if any of you are bored and want to kill some time, I have all the Fallen King and the King of the Freaks downloaded here. It's all that's done so far so, if any of you want, here's some reading <3<3<3
