Good luck to Debs who today is setting off on a 3 month adventure to The Mutende Children’s Village in Zambia, Africa.

Over the next three months Deb is planning to spend time at Mutende to help develop the care and well-being of the children and to look into ways of sustaining the orphanage's future.

CHILDREN’S VILLAGE // Part 01

Following the last presentation groups which had worked with similar design approaches were combined to elaborate a common design. In the new group the first step was discussing if the different designs could be merged in some way or if it was necessary to start a new one, drawing the conclusion that the three design proposals had some coinciding approaches that could be persued in the common final design: small scale units with divided functions, dynamic interspaces and a central connecting courtyard. One of the three design proposals was already combining all of those elements and thus it was chosen to serve as a basis for the new design.

The chosen project was working with small sleeping units offering each child a personal space complying the basic needs with a window and a set of furniture consisting of a bed and a closet with an integrated desk. This concept corresponds to the buddhist virtue of equality and not only offers the children a certain amount of privacy but also strengthens their community sense by creating little “families“.

Another big advantage of the small sleeping units is their modularity. It allows a flexible interaction of the buildings with the environment and furthermore creates interesting spaces between and around the modules, offering different spatial qualities like open meeting places or intimate retreat opportunities.

One of the main topics for the new design was moulding the “negative space“ between the individual units. The objective was to create a central courtyard that contributes to a strong community but at the same time provides areas with different functions: arrival yard, community yard, children‘s yard and washing yard. The entrance of each module is aligned to the main yard. Small wall elements generate private retreats on the backsides of the units.

The community space consists of the “negative space“ between the modules, the central courtyard and the community house. That‘s why the community house is placed in extension of the central axis of the main courtyard. It‘s designed to comply with the basic needs as cooking and eating on the one hand and to provide a flexible space for learning, playing and meditation on the other.
