I caught Rome going up a ski hill today, (yes, UP 😂) talking to himself out loud… This is after him asking about why we go fast down hills. “Because of gravity”… followed by me trying to explain gravity to a 4 year old. Clearly, he didn’t understand, when he continued to try to go UP “snow ramps” without any momentum (learning the hard way)… but saying to himself out loud, “Come oooooon, up and up and up, come ooooon…” - somehow, he still accomplished the mission. #PUREGRIT Create your own little cheerleader. If you can teach your kiddos to cheer themSELVES on, speak to themSELVES kindly, they won’t need to source it outside of themselves…(I mean sure, it would help, but why not help create a limitless internal source.) QOTD: Who were your most read authors in high school? I was in high school from 2008-2012 and it was during that period I really became a giant bookworm (I didn't have many friends so reading was what I did on breaks). Some of the authors I read a lot of then are still favourites today (though I will admit I've fallen behind with a lot of their newer books): Ally Carter, Maggie Steifvater, Juliet Marillier, Kate Forsyth, Julie Kagawa, Veronica Roth, Richelle Mead, Suzanne Collins, Kiersten White, Jennifer Lynne Barnes, Terri Farley, Rachel Vincent, Kelley Armstrong. Just to naem a few. I Am Perfectly Designed by Karamo Brown and Jason Brown: Written by a father (yep, that Karamo!) and son, this book and its beautiful illustrations celebrate the relationship of a son and his dad as they go through a joyful day, the son asking questions and father answering. The son asks if Karamo remembers fun events they did together, like dressing up for Halloween, looking at the stars, and going to the market, and asks if his dad will miss him when he grows up and leaves home. The dad, of course, remembers everything fondly, and tells him that not only will he miss him, he will still feed the pigeons like they do together, invent dance moves like they love to do, and think of him all the time - because they are perfectly designed for each other. This sweet, heartfelt and beautifully drawn story shows the power of shared memories and the joy of quality time. I was very fortunate to have a family that fully supported and encouraged my love of nature and art. They bought me books, signed me up for classes, took mr to all sorts of cool places to walk and see wildlife…and as you can see, I still treasure some of those books. The Audubon Book of Nature Stories was such a favorite that I kept it even after one of the dogs chewed it 😉 I loved the stories but also the illustrations, especially the one I’ve include here of the man with the whooping crane. Day 24 of the #authorgramchallenge by @lorenlicata and @writeincommunity is "favorite childhood reads." *My Mama Had A Dancing Heart by Libba Moore Gray- My all time favorite! I still have the hard cover from my childhood. It has stayed with me through numerous moves, including one across country! "It feels like a tip-tapping, song-singing, finger-snapping kind of day. Let's celebrate! And so we did!' * Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans- I had a large hard cover book that was a collection of about six or seven of the Madeline stories. I adored Madeline! I had dolls, the TV show on VHS tapes, the movie on VHS, and an ornament (which I still have)! "In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines... The smallest on was Madeline." * The Birthday Moon by Lois Duncan- Funny story! We got this one from the library and loved it so much, my mother, who could not find it anywhere, wound up paying the library for it (she told them we misplaced it 🤫)! It became a tradition to read this book on each of our birthdays every year. "On your very next birthday, I'll give you the moon on the end of a string like a golden balloon." *Linnea in Monet's Garden by Christina Bjork- Another beloved book where I had the doll to match! I loved French Impressionism when I was younger, namely Degas and Monet! I remember one of my favorite parts of reading this book during bedtime was finding where Linnea was on each page. This is another one that I still own. *The Magic Treehouse books by Mary Pope Osbourne- Another popular bedtime story for both my brother and I. We used to devour these books. There was so much I could relate to in the books. I loved art like Annie. I, too, had an older brother. And they lived in Pennsylvania while I lived in New Jersey. Plus, the way they would jump into books, explore nature and history was a lot of fun. We loved and read this series so much I still remember saying right alongside my mother as she read, "The tree house started to spin. It spun faster and faster. Then everything was still.
