Over 200,000 federal workers are fired from several agencies:

As a part of Elon Musk’s ‘DOGE’ policies, over 200,000 federal workers have been fired since Trump came into power. In addition, 75,000 workers have accepted buyouts in place of being fired from their positions. These cuts were seen in the departments of education, homeland security, energy, USAID, CFPB, and many more throughout the federal government. This week, remaining workers were ordered by Musk to document their work’s achievements from the past week or resign, requiring them to prove why they should still have their jobs and not fall victim to the already staggering cuts in staff.

Trump ends federal benefits to undocumented migrants:

Donald Trump has signed an executive order this week that will end federal benefits being given to undocumented migrants, with the White House disguising it as a policy to ‘take corrective action’ against migrants and stop funds from being used to ‘support sanctuary policies or assist illegal immigration’. This was confirmed on the White House’s twitter page, telling people that there would be ‘no more federal benefits to illegal aliens’. Ironically, at the same event that this policy was announced, he described the USA in three words - love, strength and respect.

Donald Trump fires the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, CQ Brown:

General CQ Brown was fired this week, being the second black man to hold the position and having co-signed a memo setting out diversity goals for the minority officer applicants. He also spoke out about race following George Floyd’s murder. No reason for his dismissal was provided by the president or the White House, only a message thanking him for his service.

Donald Trump labels President Zelensky as a ‘dictator’:

In a post on social media, Trump called Ukraine’s President Zelensky a ‘dictator’ and accused Europe of failing to bring peace in the war between Ukraine and Russia. These comments were made in response to comments made by Zelensky about Trump living in a disinformation space that Russia has created. Ukraine has been in a state of martial law since the beginning of the invasions in February 2022, causing general elections to be suspended. Prime minister of the UK, Keir Starmer, has declared his support to Ukraine and their actions in this decision.

G20 Summit takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is boycotted by the USA:

The two-day meeting between world leaders was declared a success, focusing on geopolitical issues. A general consensus was made that the trading system around the globe must be improved, as the current regime under the World Trade Organisation is not operating optimally. Other matters such as food security, industrialisation, employment, artificial intelligence and data governance were discussed and highlighted. In these talks, the representative for the USA, secretary of state Marco Rubio, was voluntarily absent, and was instead represented by US embassy staff from Pretoria. This was noted to be reflective of a recent decline of US involvement in global affairs.

Conservative Party win the vote in Germany Bundestag elections:

With 28.52% of the vote, the CDU/CSU won 208 of the seats, led by Freidrich Merz. The CDU/CSU is also known as the Union or Union parties, and are a centre-right conservative political alliance, consisting of the political parties of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria. Alternative for Germany took second place with 20.8% of the votes, being a far-right, right-wing populist party led by Alice Weidel, known for their eurosceptic and anti-immigration beliefs.

In the past week, a swath of schools and even entire school districts have announced closures in at least 10 states. These include Texas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee, among others. It’s a measure reminiscent of the COVID lockdown era: schools closing their doors—some canceling classes entirely, while others pivot to remote learning—due to widespread illness. However, this time, influenza is the main culprit, and the school closures are short-lived, with most lasting only a few days.

GoFundMe Became a $250 Million Lifeline After the L.A. Fires (NYT) As the chief executive of the crowdfunding site GoFundMe, Tim Cadogan is no stranger to disasters. But until the Eaton fire forced him to evacuate his own home in Altadena, Calif., last month, a crisis had never landed on his actual doorstep. Now the university professor is worried the Trump administration is going to deport him. The Department of Homeland Security has canceled the temporary protected status given to thousands of Venezuelans who have arrived in recent years. So many of them have become crime victims since violence erupted in their country four years ago that they are no longer shaken by their friends’ stories of burglaries, carjackings or other offenses. Far-Right Leaders Rally in Spain to ‘Make Europe Great Again’ (NYT) Since taking office, President Trump has threatened European countries’ security and economies, angled to take control of Greenland, and promised to “definitely” slap the nations with tariffs. Even parties that would seem to be his natural allies are nervous. But Saturday was not the day for disputes. Leaders of far-right parties in Europe came to Madrid for what, on the surface at least, amounted to a boldface names booster rally for a new Trump era. There was Marine Le Pen of France’s far-right National Rally; the Netherland’s populist, Geert Wilders; the leader of Italy’s League party, Matteo Salvini. All made clear that they shared Mr. Trump’s charge against what they see as “wokeism,” “gender theory,” and overweening environmentalism. For them, the American president had blown through the last barriers that had confined their parties to the political margins. “Trump’s tornado has changed the world in just a couple of weeks,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary told his allies from the stage of the summit whose slogan was, “Make Europe Great Again.” “Yesterday we were the heretics,” he said. “Now we are the mainstream.”

War Has Wreaked Havoc on Ukraine’s Classrooms (NYT) The students meet a day a week for lessons in a tiny underground classroom that teachers call the beehive, for the buzzing of all the children packed inside. Holding classes above ground in this part of Ukraine, in the city of Balakliya near the front line, is considered too dangerous because of the ever-present threat of Russian missiles and drones. Children spend most of their time in online classes and take turns going to school underground. Disruption to the education of Ukraine’s 3.7 million schoolchildren is one of the most serious challenges for the country. Classes have been repeatedly interrupted, leaving many students far behind academically, experts say. Children are also losing their soft skills, such as communication and conflict resolution, from being unable to interact enough with other students. Providing classes of any kind has been a huge obstacle for the country since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.

China’s campaign to turn the world against Taiwan (Economist) In the battle for global backing over Taiwan’s fate, China is rapidly gaining ground. By The Economist’s count, 70 countries have now officially endorsed both China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and, just as crucially, that China is entitled to pursue “all” efforts to achieve unification, without specifying that those efforts should be peaceful. Moreover, the vast majority of those countries have adopted that new wording in the past 18 months, after a Chinese diplomatic offensive across the global south. Our findings are consistent with those in a study published on January 15th by the Lowy Institute, an Australian think-tank. It found that by the end of last year 119 countries—62% of the UN’s member states—had endorsed China’s claim to sovereignty over Taiwan. Of them, 89 also backed China’s unification efforts, with many supporting “all” such measures. China wants protection from the sanctions that Western officials have discussed imposing in the event of a Taiwan crisis. By ensuring much of the world recognises the legitimacy of its actions, it makes it unlikely sanctions or even censure could be imposed via the UN and means that global compliance with Western-led sanctions might be even lower than has been the case after Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

On Aug. 4, 2020, hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate detonated in a Beirut Port warehouse, killing at least 218 people, injuring more than 6,000 and devastating large swaths of the capital. The blast, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, caused billions of dollars in damage and sent shockwaves through the nation’s capital. The probe into the causes of the blast, led by Judge Tarek Bitar, has faced years of obstacles that at one point appeared to have halted the investigation altogether. Officials implicated in the case accused Bitar of being biased in his investigation, refused to testify, demanded his removal and filed legal complaints against him. Fixing AI Recruiting Tool Data Bias: CHRO Alert!

Features in AI Recruiting Tool Technology In a recent Harris Poll Association Workforce Monitor online survey, more than 2,000 American citizens were asked about AI recruiting tools. A third of those surveyed recently think AI hiring tools are more biased than employing people alone.

The findings demonstrated a higher level of suspicion among employed job searchers in the United States over the use of AI in hiring, with almost half (49%) of survey participants thinking that AI recruiting tools are more prejudiced than human recruiters.

Just 29% of individuals who have no immediate plans to change jobs think AI recruiting tools are less prejudiced than people, compared to 43% of those who are at least thinking about changing jobs. Additionally, according to the poll, 39% of job seekers had applied for jobs using AI Recruiting tools.

Concurrently, the survey discovered that 39% of job searchers have using AI Recruiting tools to help with their application process. Use varies by race/ethnicity among US citizens: only 17% of White Americans report using AI while applying for jobs, compared to 36% of Hispanic and 34% of Black persons.

This research is consistent with the USA Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s guidelines on integrating AI into a job search while upholding the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It also comes amid continuous debates about AI screening tools that inherently display bias when making critical decisions.

The intrinsic biases of some AI screening systems employed by businesses are coming up more and more in conversations as AI becomes more commonplace.

Due to the potential for data bias, human resource executives must make sure that the organizations they partner with for recruitment processes undergo independent audits to guarantee that the data sets they use are free from prejudice. Their lack of industry understanding about AI and the dangers of data bias is one of the reasons HR and procurement executives are not asking the proper questions.
