Barnevelder Chicks Growing Up
Remember these little guys I got back in March? Back in March they were a bit smaller than a tennis ball but bigger than a golf ball. In April they had grown to softball size. In May they were about half the size of a football. And now. . . . . . . . they’re football size. More than half grown but still supposed to be a large chicken that lays a large to extra-large brown egg. Yesterday they…

Was it Cackle Hatchery that was that really bad one? Something about bad silkies I think but I'm not sure if it's others too. I'm looking into barnevelders & unsure about it or anywhere else that could be good that can ship. There's areas local to me, but they're auction style & co-workers have had bad experiences with the people there so I'm wary to go.
I would avoid Hoover and Cackle hatchery
I don't recommend getting birds from livestock swaps or auctions either since they are a biosecurity risk.
I would buy birds from a private breeder/farmer, if you have lots of swaps or auctions in your area that means you also have breeders so why not just go to them directly?
Your local chicken facebook groups are the best place to find them. Be aware of scammers though and don't send anyone any money through venmo or PayPals family and friends option.

suddenly feeling super embaressed about making a superjail OC and not wanting to partake in the superjail server im in..... like brugh..... why did i join if not to do this
(ill take this chance to spew)
Anyways i call this fool Rusty, and he is in for grand larceny and aggrivated assault. He's a southern man who tried very hard to uphold his beliefs, but hes kinda bad at it. He likes the warden romantically, but its not reciprocated. regardless hes holding out. think like how scout is with miss pauling. (he is kinda disgusted with himself for liking a man, but thats due to a religious upbringing) (rusty, not scout) he lived on a ranch with his folks and took a liking to chickens (he's a huge fan of double silver laced barnevelders due to the females pretty lacing)
sorry!
also not tagging cause i still am just barely embarresed enough to hope this gets lost and buried

You have pet birds? If so, what species etc?
28 actually. I have backyard chickens, and ducks. ATM we have 3 baby chicks in the bathtub because they are too small to go outside, hence being in the bathroom with the birds.
More info beneath the cut because I love my babies but don't want to list all of them and clog people's feeds when no one cares lol
Edit: nevermind I have no idea how to add a cut and Google lied to me
I have
Chicky-chick (black sex link)
Regina George (black sex link)
Taco Bell (black sex link)
Bobbi (black sex link)
Peggy (buff orpington)
Eliza (buff orpington)
Presley (ameraucana)
Harriet (ameraucana)
Beans (ameraucana)
Priscilla (dominique)
Sam-I-Am (olive egger)
Ramona (olive egger)
Barbara (barnevelder)
Hazel (barnevelder)
Beatrice (silver laced wyandotte)
Caspian (silver laced wyandotte rooster)
Peter (svarthöna rooster)
Edmund (svarthöna rooster)
And the chicks, Susan and Lucy (white orpington) and.....an unnamed rhode island red.
Then there's Frankie, an absolutely massive Pekin, Percy Quackson, James Madison, Meg and Jo (black swedish) and Beth and Amy (blue swedish)
Here is pictures not of my specific birds, they aren't cooperative enough for that, but of their breeds and roughly what they look like
I can't fit pictures of duckies also so I will rb with em
But Priscilla is my precious baby and the first of our animals to show empathy to me, which is weird, because chickens aren't really supposed to show empathy at all? Even within their flocks they don't really show empathy. They'd rather eat each other alive. And we have animals that DO show empathy to humans. Dogs and cats, even goats are more affectionate at least, but no, it was the chicken. I was crying and she climbed onto my lap and cooed at me. None of our birds would do such a thing, none but her. I love her.

(Forgive the older picture of the girls - I need to get a more updated "Squad" photo soon)
I've been taking my mom some eggs from the girls and she stated that the eggs all had different flavors (she's been doing them hardboiled). My husband and I have been doing them as fried or scrambled in sandwiches but after Jasper and DB Cooper's first eggs, we hadn't tried them fried or scrambled without any seasoning (just because my husband and I are used to doing wild things with seasonings).
Taste test results and image IDs under the cut.
So we went over to my mom's with a dozen eggs on Sunday and set up a taste test, throwing in one of her store bought eggs from when we weren't able to get together last week.
The results:
Cleo (an Easter Egger, lays the gigantic green egg)- strong rich flavor, creamy - to note, she is our smallest hen but lays the largest eggs at about 64 grams.
Olivia Warbawks (a Black Copper Marans, lays the dark brown egg) - mild flavor, not as creamy. Still amazing though
Bernadotte Peters (a Gold Laced Wyandotte, lays the larger light brown egg)- between Cleo and Olivia in flavor and creaminess
DickButt "D. B." Cooper (a Blue Laced Barnevelder, lays the medium brown egg - her name came from a friend)- Bright, strong, mustardy. Had a nice aftertaste on the back of the tongue.
Jasper (a Buff Orpington, lays the smallest, light brown egg)- Creamy, somehow Sweet?!
Store bought (white egg)- no.
I should also add they all seem to have their own favorite forage foods so maybe that's what led to a difference in egg flavor. It's going to be interesting when watermelon and flower season start up again for the girls!
[First Image ID: A picture of six eggs, arranged in a circle on a counter. From the top, going clockwise, there is a dark brown egg labeled "Olivia Warbawks", a small, light brown egg labeled "Jasper", An extremely large green egg labeled "Cleopatra", a white egg labeled "Store Bought", a large, light brown egg labeled "Bernadotte Peters", and a Medium brown egg labeled "D B Cooper". /.End ID]
[Second Image ID: Five chickens standing in a chicken run a There is a Blue chicken with brown spots, a Black chicken with a copper colored neck, a Brown chicken with black lace markings, a brown chicken with a fluffy tan beard, and a yellow chicken. They are grouped together in the center of the image and all except for the yellow chicken are looking into the camera. The yellow chicken is not looking at anything in particular. /.End ID]

Barnevelder Chicks for 2023
The Barnevelder is a Dutch breed of domestic chicken. This is the first year I’ve raised this breed and they are supposed to lay dark chocolate brown, large eggs. However, the more eggs a chicken produces, the lighter colors they’ll be. Most hens weigh 5 to 6 pounds while roosters weigh between 7 and 8 pounds. So, they’re a little bit larger than the average chicken. They grow into gorgeous…
