Laundry day
Tuesday - 6/18/24
Our hotel in Oslo has a great buffet breakfast. Since it wasn’t too busy this morning I took a couple of pictures of it. Both in Stockholm and here in Oslo we have had great breakfasts. That is one meal they know how to do right!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If it’s Tuesday, it must be laundry day! Laundromats are scarce in Scandinavia. Before our trip, I did a lot of research and found only one laundromat in all of Stockholm, and it wasn’t centrally located. In Oslo, there are two or three laundromats, but none are centrally located either. This morning we took a tram out to Clean Kokos (the laundromat). It’s hard to travel for over three weeks without doing laundry at least once. Normally we rent an AirBnB during some part of our trip that has a washer and dryer— but not this trip.
Hotels have laundry service, and before we left learned that it was expensive. We were shocked to find that in Sweden it cost 85 kr ($8.19) to launder a tee shirt and 40 kr ($3.85) for a pair of socks. Oslo was even more expensive— 95 kr ($9.00) for a tee shirt and 95 kr ($9.00) for a pair of socks. We can buy them cheaper than wash them!
Laundry took a couple of hours, but we met three people on a Rick Steves’ Scandinavia tour at the laundromat and talked with them to pass the time. We learned about their travels and how Rick’s tours operate. Based on what we learned, we are still of the opinion that tours try to visit too many locations in too little time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we did the laundry and had returned to our hotel it started to rain, so we had lunch inside at our hotel instead of outdoors.
Mid afternoon the sun came out and we went to the National Museum. The museum features both older and modern art, contemporary art, architecture and design. It consists of 87 exhibit rooms, with each room displaying about 10 to 15 artworks. We spent about three and one half hours at the museum and managed to visit all 87 rooms! Below is a sample of a few of the artworks we saw.
Here is Munan Ovrelid’s “Buttons Unbuttoned and Empty Plates”
Tumblr media
Art depicting Norwegian culture. This piece is from Gustav Wentzel in southern Norway showing a lively summer night's dance on an open meadow. It wasn’t raining that day :-).
Tumblr media
And of course there were the classics, like this one from Monet.
Tumblr media
Kristian Kvakland’s sculpture below represents how some people felt after visiting the museum’s 87 rooms of art.
Tumblr media
And this is my favorite. From the exhibit: “Soot Klevig's work can be seen as an expression of the fear of nuclear conflict during the Cold War, but also as a contribution to the debate about the construction of nuclear power plants in Norway.”
You have got to love Soot and his symbolic expression! At first glance, before reading the description posted, I just saw fried eggs in a bunch of frying pans :-).
Tumblr media
From the museum we went directly to Ricksha Pakistani Street Food restaurant for dinner. We had Samosa Chana Chaat, Mango Lamb, Pepper Chicken and Garlic Nahn. It was outstanding and tied with Der Peppern Gror, also in Oslo, as the best meals we have had on our trip. Ricksha is rated by TripAdvisor as third best restaurant in Oslo.
Tumblr media
The top restaurants in Oslo do not typically serve traditional Norwegian food such as lutefisk. In Scandinavia, most restaurants offer a variety of international cuisines, including Italian, sushi, Indian, Chinese, and pizza.

Bergen end of hike, Brygge and floating sauna!
After that we walked around the famous wooden buildings of Brygge on the harborfront including a souvenir shop with Christmas ornaments and some impressively tilted stairs. We then split up with Becca and Oli checking out a graphic novel/comic book/lego/fantasy store for an hour or so while the remainder of the party went to enjoy the floating sauna we had booked (but that Becca and Oli did not with to partake in). The sauna master made a big deal about how hot the sauna would be and stated the temperature was near 160 degrees F but in truth it felt similar to sauna’s we had been in in the US. We had paid for a shared sauna as it was the cheapest option and ended up sharing it with a couple who turned out to be from Boulder (small world!). We enjoyed getting sweaty then plunging into the north sea (via ladder in the twins case, via leaping in in all others' case). The water was definitely a bit colder than it had been in Oslo but tolerable to be in for a minute or two knowing you had a sauna to warm you up once you got out. Our hour passed quickly and soon enough the sauna master told us time was up and we did one last cold plunge then walked up onto shore to dry out and change. En route home, we stopped at the final playground of the day, which a was a super cool maze of interconnected, elevated rope tunnels for the children to crawl through. We then returned home to the apartment to make dinner plans and decided to just order in from the highly rated pizza place that was below our apartment. This turned out to be a good call as we wolfed down 4 different very tasty pizzas (with fried chicken, cornflakes and dill being the most exotic flavor). We then hung out and played cards (kids agains maturity) before heading to sleep.

Summary: You are a graduate student at the University of Oslo, and have applied for a job as a personal assistant at the Lothbrok Corporation, without really knowing much of the position advertised. When it turns out you are going to work for the (in)famous Ivar Lothbrok, your whole life is turned up-side-down.
Tumblr media
Scheduling your work hours was not too difficult, as you only really had one lecture this semester, your last lecture for finishing your master’s degree. This, together with meetings with your supervisor took up Monday and Wednesday afternoons, while the whole of Thursday was reserved to work purely on your thesis. This left you with two free mornings and two whole days to work.
Margarethe informed you that while sometimes Ivar Lothbrok might need you on the weekends, generally you were not expected to be readily available Saturdays and Sundays. If you were needed, it would also be paid extra.
It had been quite exhausting to go through all of the paperwork, but Margarethe gladly took the time to explain it all in detail, letting you read through the contract and secrecy agreements, and you really signed everything then and there, so that you would not have the chance to think about it and maybe chicken out.
Even though her patience, you got the vibe that Margarethe didn’t seem to like you for some reason. This was not helped by the fact, that while she went into a lot of detail in the contract and payment agreement, her only answer to your question about what kind of work you would be doing for Ivar exactly was a raised eyebrow and a condescending ‘whatever he asks of you’.
That surly was not very reassuring, and you were a bit freaked out about the whole thing on your way home.
“And? How did it go?” your roommate Solveig asked, as soon as you had entered your shared, kind of shitty apartment in Majorstuen, looking up from where she had sat on the sofa, wasting time on her phone.
“I got the job.” Came out of your mouth, as you closed the door and slipped out of your shoes.
 Solveig’s mouth fell open.
“What?” she asked, staring at you, as you let yourself drop down onto the sofa next to her.
“I got the job.” You repeated, staring at the wall, not quite believing it yourself. “I got the job as the personal assistant of Ivar fucking Lothbrok.”
“WHAT?” Solveig’s voice was a bit shrill, and suddenly her face was right in front of you. “You are kidding, right? Right?”
You just shook your head, running a hand over your face.
 “Tell. Me. Everything.”
And so, you did. You told her about the interview, what you had said, and how Ivar had laughed and cancelled the rest of the interviews. You told her how you had no idea what was expected from you and that you would start next week.
“Not to be mean, or anything..” Solveig said, pouring you another glass of wine, while she drank her own. She had opened a bottle halfway through your story. “I kind of.. based on what you have told me it looks a bit as if he hired you out of spite. I would not be surprised if that job ends as quickly as it started.”
You were glad that Solveig was always honest with you, but still, that was not a nice thought.
“You mean I should not stop applying for other jobs?” you sighed.
“Peppe’s Pizza is still hiring, so..” she shrugged. You pursed your lips.
“You only want me to work there, so that you have someone to talk to during your shift.”
“That is not a crime, is it?” Solveig giggled. “Well, they still have to pay you for the days you work there, so it is not bad, even if they throw you out after a week or two. Gives you a bit of time to look for something else.”
“True.” You took a sip from your wine. “Still, going to have to buy some office attire, so they don’t throw me out before the job even starts.”
 -----
The following Monday at eight AM sharp, you were knocking at Ivar Lothbrok’s office door at the top floor of the building. You had arrived early this morning, meeting with Margarethe at half past seven, where she had given you your key-card, and roughly showed you around the most important parts of the building.
You waited for a few seconds, before Ivar called you in, entering the office and finding yourself in a gigantic room. The glass front overlooked the fjord, a couch was on the left, and a big desk on the right, while the walls were either covered with pictures or tall bookshelves. Other than that, there was a lot of open space, modern and tasteful décor.
Right upon entering you spotted Ivar’s wheelchair right next to the door, while he was sitting on the large sofa in quite a bit of distance, a file opened on his lap, as he was reading through some papers. He ignored your confused frown, as he smiled, looking up from his file, watching you like a hawk as you came in.
“Good morning, Y/N. Sit down.” He patted the sofa next to him, before closing he file and putting it down onto the coffee table in front of him.
You closed the door behind you and walked over to him, sitting down on the almost intimidatingly large sofa, a bit unsure how to act of what to say. Usually, there was a very flat hierarchical structure in Norway, but this was not just any normal company.
Of course, you had used the past couple of days to read up on the man in front of you (and Solveig had sent you around a hundred links to news articles about him as well). He was, though his young age, a quite successful businessman, and had studied in Oxford, graduating with honours. Still, there was also quite a lot of rumour about him, his connection to the Finehair Corporation, and his rivalry with the Inkstad Company, which had split from the Lothbroks over twenty-five years ago, and moved down to Denmark.
There were also some less reliable stories about connections to the Mafia and crime rings, but you were not quite sure how much they could be trusted. What worried you more were some sources speaking of covered up incidents in his youth, involving physical violence.
“Hello, Mr. Lothbrok.” You said, pushing your thoughts aside and trying to put on a smile as well. You had been on a first name basis with your professors and other past employers, as was not unusual in Norway, but somehow it felt wrong addressing this man with anything but formality. Maybe you had read too much about him, and were now intimidated.
“Please, call me Ivar. Much easier that way. There are way too many ‘Mr. Lothbroks’ in this company.” Ivar leaned back, mustering you for a second. You shifted a bit under his gaze, his piercing blue eyes feeling as if they managed to look right into your soul. You faintly wondered if it was a bad thing to find your new boss so physically attractive, but right now that was something you really did not want to think about.
“First of all, Y/N..” Ivar started. “I have to tell you that I actually don’t need, or even want a personal assistant. My mother insisted on it, however, so we will have to make do.” He rolled his eyes, and you tensed up at his words. Kind of what Solveig had predicted. “On the other hand, I thought maybe you could turn out to be actually quite useful.”
You did not answer, as you had no idea what you could say. Technically, it also had not been a question, so you just watched him watching you. You had no clue what he expected from you, and you were a bit scared that he would just toy around with you until he got bored annoying his mother. Your nervousness grew with every passing second.
What was he expecting of you? The usual organisational stuff? Or something else?
“Don’t be scared, I won’t ask anything inhumane of you.” Ivar had apparently read your facial expression correctly. “Most of your duties will involve keeping my schedule, keeping track of my appointments, here and there accompanying me to meetings and taking notes, even if the appointments are abroad, as well as organising these business trips. Of course, also grabbing me lunch of coffee if I am too busy to do it myself, and pulling me out of horribly boring conversations with, as you put it, stubborn and eccentric people if I ask you to.”
Most of what he said was kind of what you expected, but his last statement surprised you.
“Come again?” you blurted out before thinking, instantly regretting your choice of words. But to your surprise, Ivar just smirked.
“I am, as you are surly aware, a very important person, and many people are simply not worth my time. If I give you a certain signal, a code if you will, you will come to me and tell me about a very urgent thing I have to take care off immediately, simple as that. I am counting on your creativity.”
You blinked a that, but finally nodded.
“Well, then, Y/N. I think we will have a pretty good time.” Ivar grinned devilishly, and you did your best not to bite your lip. Ivar’s face had a way to go from innocent to demon in a span of a second, and you had no idea what to make of that. Or of the fact that that made him even more attractive.
Before you were able to respond, however, Ivar sat up again, pulling out a large leather bag from under the coffee table, which you had not noticed before.
“I was so free and put everything into this bag that you are going to need. A company laptop and a work phone, of course. To set it up, just go to the IT people on the third floor later, they will show you everything. Next there are diaries with my already set appointments, which you will continue, information about my contacts and acquaintances, and a rough guide how I have handled things so far. I want you to know the names of my business partners, as well as the information I have gathered about them, in their respective files.” Ivar had opened the bag, and pointed at the various items. Then he looked back at you again. “The who-is-who is very important in my line of work, and if you are to join me in meetings, it is vital that you remember this information correctly. I will be patient for the first week, but if you mess up too much afterwards, I will fire you.” His smile was gone now, his eyes drilling into you.
“Of course, Mr. Loth-.. Ivar.” You swallowed. It didn’t sound too difficult, but at the same time, impossible to master. Especially next to university. But you would still try and do your best, and keep this position as long as possible. You had realised that this job not only paid enough for you to live comfortably right now, it also would make a good impression on your CV for future employment.
“Good! Go down to IT then to get the phone and laptop sorted out, and then you can leave. Take the time today to look through all of this, and I will see you tomorrow, again at eight AM.” The smile was on his lips again, but it did not quite reach his eyes.
The IT people were nice, and it calmed you down a lot to joke around with them, while a young guy wearing a Star Wars shirt explained to you how to connect to the company servers from home.
Solveig of course needled you about information about your first work day, thinking that you had been fired already after you returned home before she had even left for university herself, but you just shooed her away, to start to go through all the files Ivar had provided you with.
 ---
Working for Ivar was.. not particularly difficult, but very different from your previous job. Most of the time you spent either on the phone for him, or creating long lists or catalogues, while he was either working or in a meeting. You did not really have an office, but a desk in front of the entrance to Ivar’s office, where you could work from when you were not on the go.
After the first two weeks of work, Ivar started to hand more and more of the more ‘repetitive’ parts of his work to you, only ever explaining the process of it to you once, expecting you to immediately get the hang of it. But having survived the most shitty professors UiO had to offer, it was not difficult for you to pay close attention, and to work yourself into anything. You had never imagined yourself as a business person, but you found that you actually kind of enjoyed your work.
You also had immediately started to join Ivar in meetings, taking notes and minutes while he and his brothers, which you had also gotten to know quite quickly, discussed business deals of a few hundred millions of krona. The personal assistants of the other Lothbroks were all full time, and you often felt a bit shit, as they seemed just so much more professional than you did. With your first pay-check you bought some even nicer office attire.
When you were not on the phone making appointments with the personal assistants of equally important men and women as Ivar, or on the computer doing other administrative work, you got Ivar lunch or a coffee, before you got into the office for your morning shifts, and sometimes had to bring or get some of his hand made designer suits from a local dry cleaning agency.
Working for Ivar was definitely a lot more work than being a professor’s assistant, but you still had gotten the hang of it quickly. Overtime was also always paid, and from what you were paid from the first business trip Ivar had taken you on, you had bought a new sofa for your flat share (Solveig had toasted to the Lothbroks that day, lying on the new sofa like a starfish).
In general, Ivar himself was.. one kind of a man. He often seemed to be a bit cold, and quite unpredictable, and often snapped at people if they annoyed him out of the blue. He was ambitious, and very focused on his work, sometimes so much that he became almost non-verbal, only huffing at your questions. You had quickly found out how to deal with that, which was by leaving him alone for most of your work hours, writing up everything you’d might need from him and then taking up as little of his time as possible, which he seemed to appreciate.
With his siblings, he often got angry, that you were sure that his wheelchair was the only thing holding him back from tearing their throats out, but with how his brothers often acted, it didn’t really surprise you.
Still, he was, as you found out especially during your business trips, incredibly funny, intelligent and witty, always having a quick remark on hand, or a new strategy to try out. He somehow seemed to calculate every single one of his movements, every even unimportant detail part of a bigger plan.
He was way more ambitious than his brothers, even if not expansion happy as his oldest brother Bjorn, who was mostly working on their newly opened branch in Canada.
You really liked him as a person, even if he was not always easy to work with. And the fact that he had not fired you, hopefully also meant that he liked you too, to some extent at least.
Yes, you really liked your boss. Liked. Nothing more. Yes. You knew you were lying to yourself, but you were not ready to admit that yet.
The first business trip itself had been in you second month in the company, a short two-day trip to Stockholm, had been quite curious. You had not spent too much time with Ivar before, other than meetings and work-related conversations, so being with him for two-days almost non-stop had been odd.
While the drive to the airport had been mostly filled with conversations about the upcoming meetings, during the one-hour flight you took from Oslo to Stockholm (on a private jet of course) Ivar had started to tell you a story that had happened in his university years in England, where they used to have a German lecturer who had so many quirks that the students had developed drinking games.
“It was always kind of noisy, of course.” Ivar said, taking a sip from his coffee. “The last lecture before Christmas, and the last lecture before summer break were always the lectures a German exchange student called ‘Rupp Saufen’, which apparently stuck. Means ‘Rupp drinking’, Rupp being the professor.” He explained.
You had a grin on your face already, far too amused already by his university anecdotes, which kind of reminded you of your own undergrad years.
“Anyways, because the lecture hall was quite large, the professor had a microphone, and also handed one around if someone had a question. So picture this: a large hall full of students, half of them already tipsy because of the drinking game, mostly sitting in the back. It is noisy, there is laughing, and almost no one is really paying attention anymore. Last week before Christmas, with the most quirky and boring professor of the whole faculty.”
Ivar was leaning forward a bit, a grin on his face.
“Then, a woman in the first row raises her hand, to ask a question, and the professor, with a grin, hands her the microphone. Instead of asking something though, she turns around towards the rest of the lecture hall, raising the microphone and shouting ‘Shut the FUCK up!’ at everyone.” Ivar giggled and you could not supress a laugh either. “The professor goes pale. Everyone is kind of shocked, but it indeed goes silent. She hands the microphone back to the professor who is giggling nervously, saying ‘Oh yes, please be a bit more silent’, and just carries on.”
“Sounds like a good time.” You chuckled, shaking your head lightly.
“It was.” Ivar leaned back again. “I, of course, never participated in shenanigans like that. Gotta keep my reputation.” He grinned, winking at you before he took another sip of his coffee, his eyes wandering over to the window.
After that trip you had grown slightly more relaxed in your position, and being less tense definitely showed in your work performance. The other personal assistants started to take you more seriously after your third month working for the Lothbrok Corperation, and you even went out with them for lunch once or twice. What surprised you was how amazed they were by how well you seemed to get along with Ivar. Apparently he was notoriously hard to work for and with, but hearing that you had, in general, no problems with him was hard to believe for them.
University suffered a bit from your new job, and you basically spent all of your weekends studying and working to keep up with writing your thesis. Gladly you were close to the finish line anyways, and after the next spring semester you would hand in your thesis. After that, who knew. You could kind of see yourself continuing to work for Ivar, but that was a thing you not really wanted to think about right now.
Your friends all had been quite surprised, of course, when you had told them about your new job, finding it amusing how you had gotten the position in the first place. You did not get to see most of them too often, with your job and uni keeping you very busy, but in November you managed to take a day off, as it was the birthday of one of your friends, who had organised a big party.
Of course, a lot of the people you had not really seen in months asked you about working for the Lothbrok Corporation, and about Ivar in particular, as there were, as you had found out yourself, many rumours about the man, who was something like a celebrity. You told a few stories, well, the bit you could tell without breaking secrecy agreements, and most were disappointed when Ivar did not turn out to be as unhinged as some gossip magazines made him out to be.
Still, one of your friends, Ragnhild, a journalist, pulled you aside a bit later in the evening, a very concerned look on her face.
“Be careful, yes? I know this job is a massive opportunity for you, but still, the Lothbroks are a big fish.” She pursed her lips. “Word is the sudden bankruptcy of the Egbert Coorp over in England was not due to bad investment choices.”
You of course knew what Ragnhild implied. You promised her to be careful, and also reassured her that you what you were doing was in no way as sensitive or secretive as anything that could lead to the fall of a massive company.
You knew why she was worried, as she knew about a lot of the shady things going on in the business world. She was also probably worried as she could not find a logical reason why you had been hired for the position in the first place, and contrary to your other friends, she was not happy with the explanation ‘Ivar found you funny and wanted to spite his mother who made him get an assistant he did not want’. If that was the reason, she had said, Ivar would have fired you a week later, not kept you for four months by now.
Personally, you did not really care about the exact reason why you had been hired, happy to just think that it was on a whim. But also, you did not dare to simply ask Ivar. Maybe it really was because you had made him laugh. Or you just looked so incompetent that choosing you was the best way to annoy his mother. Or he simply was sick of all the interviews, and hiring you on the spot was the best way to be over with it already.
And now, he seemed quite happy wit the work you did, happy how quickly you responded to his texts or calls, and how efficiently you were working. It was not a lie when you had told Aslaug how good you were at organisation, due to the horrors of university bureaucracy (the amount of paperwork needed to finish a master’s degree was insane).
You loved the work, loved the thrill of being part of such a massive corporation, right at the head of the hydra, loved the people you worked with, lover your bos-. No. Not.. not that.. right?
Ivar was hard to read, and even harder to predict at times. Sometimes he loaded you with errands, while on other days he simply ignored you or sent you home. Some days you would be in his office all day, going through paperwork and meeting minutes, with Ivar ordering some intern to get you coffee or lunch.
You were not in love with Ivar, no. Maybe.. maybe you had a little crush on him.

well this is a bit ridiculous. it’s been nearly three weeks and i’m still thinking about oslo. i’m not sure why i’m dragging this out, but a part of me probably doesn’t want to acknowledge how important it was to me. i don’t want to give it that power. it has it though. that city, those people, they have my heart.
when i got home on friday night we made vague plans for the parade the next morning, which ended up being “maybe we’ll get into the centre around one? eh?” so i spent a lazy morning with brown cheese, a slightly improved showering experience, and then my best attempt at pink stripes on the ol’ apples. i do not have a single photo of myself from pride except the shitty bus selfie i sent kit and i...can’t find it? so just use your imagination. i had a hint of cardamom on the wrists thanks to haidee, plus the rainbow pin from her on my backpack, and i was feeling pumped. i chickened out on wearing the socks she gave me because i didn’t want to spend the day in the sun and end up looking like a meme. i admire everyone else’s commitment to fashion with the risk of such a tan line, and wonder if they just spend the entire summer in socks pulled up their calves and dirty trainers.
but i digress. we hop off the plane at lax with a dream and my cardigan and follow the rainbows to the parade route. along the way i’m texting locations back and forth with a few folks but never make the connection happen, so we just keep walking until we settle a ways down karl johans. we’re maybe four people back from the barricade but we can still see everything, and certainly hear everything. fryd, my translating queen, explained who each group was, what some of the signs said, and why their presence in the parade was important. otherwise i would’ve spent the whole parade just waiting for the next bus with an english pop song blaring from it. i mean, i did that too, but i also learned about the parties in between. as the parade went on we were able to squeeze closer to the barricade, and ended up next to a lovely person who would scream HAPPY PRIDE to each group and get a rousing response. josefin waved her flag and we cheered and danced, and i felt the purest admiration for every person who was there representing a life without shame.
i don’t think i’m one of those people, yet. i don’t have any shame about my sexuality, or at least sexuality in general, but i live in an extreme denial of the damaged state of my body, and that overshadows many other aspects of my life: my sexuality, my career, my relationships, my place in this world. i would never be able to walk in a parade like that with a clear conscience. i would never be able to say that about myself. but because i find it so impossible for myself, it becomes a much more impressive accomplishment for everyone else i see. and to have what felt like an entire city embrace that pride, well...i couldn’t help but smile. i felt the love and acceptance on such a large scale that i thought: okay, maybe it’s possible.
i didn’t want to leave that bubble of hope.
after the parade finished i literally battled the crowds to find a spot in pride park. we were sweaty and tired but there was that energy of everyone still celebrating and i didn’t want to let that go. i didn’t care if it meant standing in line for an hour for pizza, because it was still an hour in that bubble. so i did. also the guy selling pizza was very attractive.
we ate and drank and saw a very tan morten in his tutu and then we gave up. or at least i did. i was sweating through my shorts and feeling quite keen on a swim, so i brought gaya, rino, and laura back to the house for a dip. we spent the afternoon cooling off, which gave us a few hours to just chill. @wehave4ever came out, and josefin and zee recreated the kiss, with fryd filming underwater (with a fucking phone! WHAT). aside from the pool the house is designed for entertaining, with plenty of seating and a great indoor/outdoor vibe. so after the rush of the early afternoon, it was nice to have space to spread out and reenergize for the evening.
i just have to circle back for a moment because...nadège. we met, finally, at the bus stop! i had already jumped in the pool but jumped right back out when she was on her way, and then scurried like a wet rat down the street in my suit and towel. i think it says a lot that i was comfortable enough to walk through the neighb in my swimsuit, as well as let that be nadège’s first sight of me, so i hope i didn’t offend anyone with the appearance. but yeah, i felt like i was at home, seeing an old friend, and dragging her up to my room to hang out, even though technically she was a stranger stepping off the bus, and i only recognized her because she wasn’t the woman with a stroller. anyway, i’m struggling to express what it is, both in person and in the fic i’m writing, that transition of an online relationship to a real life one, because the emotions are so...contradictory. i know you, but i don’t. i can tell you anything, but i should probably start with hello. i think i barely talked to her because i was so nervous and didn’t want to ramble, which is...what she sees me do on the internet every day. ugh. bottom line, i met a woman i admire so much and she has a very cool phone case and now i just want to fly across the atlantic again so we can sit down and have a proper conversation. bra story.
we hopped back on the bus to scoop isi, and after a couple of false starts ended up at tgi friday’s (in? at? on?) aker brygge. because my knowledge of the city is limited to skam locations i hadn’t spent much time by the water, so this ended up being a nice detour with a hint of home. i’ll admit i was a little on edge because i wanted to get to the closing night party on time, but this was a lesson in patience as well as who-the-fuck-shows-up-early-to-the-club. lesson learned.
the club was loud and i was scared. i wasn’t familiar with the music, and because i wasn’t really dancing all i could do was look around, and that felt creepy. i kind of gave up after a while, turning into a wallflower next to a group of girls who seemed just as unenthused. but then a barely clothed soul in heels got me grooving, backpack ‘n all, and i finally got over my prejudice against music that did not have lyrics i could sing along to. you just need a fuckin’ beat.
that didn’t stop me from running though, when gaya texted me from downstairs announcing the return of pop music. i think i eked out about 45 minutes in my element on another sticky floor before the fire alarm went off. it was ten minutes until closing so the jury is still out on a proper fire or just an efficient way of shutting down the club, but it was an interesting way to end pride week. we found our bus, waited for a less crowded one, and went home.
i chose the master bedroom in the house, and it has a small balcony, and for the third night in a row i watched the moon for a few minutes before falling asleep. thanks for a great night, babe.

UPDATE
March 15 So I promised myself I was gonna do this every month but obviously that didn’t go as planned. I’ve honestly been so busy, and February was the least to say amazing! So I told you about this girl in my last update, Julia, and I told you how much I really like her. Well since my last update in January we haven’t stopped talking, not one day. Good morning text, goodnight texts, video chat almost 24/7 and snapchat each other when we can, and honest to god its amazing. I learned so much about her and how much we truly have a lot in common, and it’s not one of those "oh she really like this thing but I don’t really like it so I have to tell her I really like it that way it seems like we have a lot in common type of thing", but no. It’s one of those things where you’re absolutely crazy about the same exact things. I’ve never thought in a million years where you’ll meet someone exactly like you. In the little things such as the way we act in public, our fashion sense, our music, and the hobbies that we love. For example I hated all my exes music, like you know when you’re in a car with them and you play something you don’t really fuck with it, and if you play something and you know they don’t fuck with it either. But with Julia I can play anything knowing she’ll love it. There just so many things to say, like we used to be passionate about basketball, we feel the same way about pieces from different brands and it’s crazy theres always someone with a different opinion then you but me and Julia always side together. I can talk forever about this girl so for now i’ll stop.     Fast forward to the beginning of February I ended up doing some spontaneous shit and decided to go visit her in Norway. It was a 10hr flight, and I couldn’t sleep one bit, I told her that it was because I slept before my flight but it totally was because I was super excited to see her hahaha. I ended up arriving there and was so confused getting around which was okay because I ended up getting to see her, I did have another 5hr bus ride from Oslo to her town which wasn’t bad at all. Norway is a beautiful place and I’m so glad I got to see it. It was quite late when I arrived and I just seeing her through the bus windows made me so nervous. Like this is really happening and we spent our first date a pepes eating the thai chicken pizza we’ve been talking about for ages hahaha. After that we spent our night at the airbnb I rented and we exchanged our gifts which is crazy cause we got the same gift omg, we both gave each other slip-ons. That night we just cuddled made out for hours had amazing sex stuff we knew we couldn’t do everyday. The whole week was amazing we went back to the city together, I met her friends, we made thousands of memories I know I’ll never forget. For example that time in urban and drakes "hold on, we're going home" came on and we looked at eachother and started singing while we were in line trying to pay for something. I loved this girl I knew before I got to see her, and when I finally met her I knew this is who I want to be with for the rest of my life. I’m never sure about anything but this I’m sure. I told myself ldr aren’t for me, but I found someone worth it. And I hope she feels the same way about me. I’m just honestly so crazy about her, nobody motivates me more, cares about me more, and truly shows me how amazing I can be.    It’s March now and it’s almost a month since I’ve last visited, we’re official now and its been 3 months nonstop talking and we’re a month in our official relationship. Everything seems to be going amazing. She’s motivated me to hit the gym, gain more weight, and change myself for the better, I got promoted like twice this  month and I’m just happy that with the right person in your life, being alive is not bad after all. She just also told me she’s coming here in April so my life is even happier. I just want you to know that this is my life now and I don’t mind living like this for a very very long time. I love you Julia happy 1 month :-) <3

Butter Chicken Pizza
Creating Butter Chicken Pizza is a fusion dish that combines the rich flavors of Indian butter chicken with the familiar comfort of pizza. Here’s a detailed recipe to guide you through making this delightful dish from scratch.
Butter Chicken Pizza Recipe
Ingredients
For the Butter Chicken:
500 grams (1 lb) chicken breasts or thighs, boneless and skinless, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 cup plain yogurt
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
1 tablespoon garam masala
1 tablespoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon red chili powder
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cups tomato purée (from about 4 large tomatoes)
1 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi), crushed
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
For the Pizza:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 packet (7 grams) active dry yeast
3/4 cup warm water
2 tablespoons olive oil
Toppings:
2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 cup red onion, thinly sliced
1 cup green bell pepper, thinly sliced
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
1 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
Instructions
Preparing the Butter Chicken
Marinate the Chicken:
In a large bowl, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste, garam masala, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt.
Add the chicken pieces, ensuring they are well-coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
Cook the Chicken:
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken pieces and cook until they are lightly browned and just cooked through. Remove and set aside.
Prepare the Sauce:
In the same pan, add the remaining butter. Sauté the chopped onions until they are golden brown.
Add the tomato purée and cook until the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
Stir in the cream and fenugreek leaves. Simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens.
Add the cooked chicken to the sauce and cook for another 5-7 minutes. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
Remove from heat and set aside.
Making the Pizza Dough
Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Assembling the Pizza
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up as well.
Prepare the Base:
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two portions. Roll out each portion into a round pizza base on a lightly floured surface.
Assemble the Pizza:
Place the rolled-out dough on a pizza peel or a baking sheet.
Spread a generous amount of the butter chicken sauce over the base.
Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Arrange the red onions and green bell peppers over the cheese.
Bake:
Transfer the pizza to the oven (onto the hot pizza stone if using).
Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
Garnish and Serve:
Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a couple of minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and a sprinkle of red chili flakes if desired.
Slice and serve hot.
Enjoy your delicious Butter Chicken Pizza!
Tips:
Marination: The longer you marinate the chicken, the more flavorful it will be.
Sauce Consistency: Ensure your butter chicken sauce is thick enough to stay on the pizza base without making it soggy.
Cheese: You can experiment with different types of cheese or even add a mix for a richer flavor.
Feel free to adjust the toppings to your liking or add other vegetables and ingredients you enjoy!

The World’s Top 10 Beer Destinations for 2019
Beer lovers with a penchant for travel already know about Belgium, both Portlands (Oregon and Maine), and Colorado. Many have Munich, and its famed Oktoberfest, on their bucket lists. But with 7,000 breweries and counting in the U.S., and more breweries in Europe and Asia increasingly inspired to supplement their own traditions with American craft brewing innovations, there are plenty of less obvious destinations calling for your next beercation.
In 2019, as in past years, VinePair challenged ourselves to look beyond the usual suspects and seek out beer cities beyond the proverbial beaten path. Adding to their appeal are a series of new nonstop flights, just-opened restaurants, and once-in-a-lifetime cultural attractions.
From the City of Light, to the City of Angels, to the Kodak City, here are our top 10 destinations for beer travel in 2019.
10. Paris, France
You’ve heard of its light, love, and haute couture. You may be less familiar, however, with Paris’s emerging beer scene. Beer lovers can sniff out locally brewed pints at world-class taprooms like La Fine Mousse, featuring French beers, affordable Cantillon and Drie Fonteinen, and a restaurant and bottle shop across the street. Brewberry provides session IPAs, frites in Chimay cheese, and a respite from Sacre Coeur crowds. Hoppy Corner, near a series of restaurants, bars, and patisseries in the 2nd arrondissement, offers a mix of French, Belgian, and American craft beers. It’s also metal-head-friendly.
Be on the lookout for local beers like Gallia Paris’s East Coast IPA, a fresh, French take on the NEIPA; or Brasserie BAPBAP’s Acid Eiffel, a gose-style sour ale inspired by the architectural landmark.
Additional cultural draws in 2019 include the debut of the Pinault Collection at the Pantheon-inspired Bourse de Commerce, designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando; and the spring 2019 debut of Italian boutique hotel J.K. Place on the Left Bank.
9. Seattle, Wash.
More than 360 bars and restaurants opened in Seattle in 2018. Among the city’s anticipated was Future Primitive Brewing, a small brewery specializing in sessionable “little beers,” as the brewery calls them, which officially opened to the public in Seattle’s White Center neighborhood on Dec. 21.
Seattle’s 60 breweries and counting also include cult favorites like Reuben’s Brews, Holy Mountain, and Cloudburst, along with long-established classics like Pike.
8. Tokyo, Japan
Beer may not be the main reason most head to Tokyo, but those who don’t take the time to acknowledge the craft beer scene here are missing out. Well-known, multi-location brewpubs like Kiuchi Brewery, which began brewing beer in 1996, and expat-led Baird Beer, launched in 2000, are now joined by a flush of more recently opened beer destinations. In Shibuya, Watering Hole, opened in 2012, serves a mix of Japanese craft beers (Onidensetsu, Minoh) and American favorites like Upslope and Burley Oak. Øl, a Scandinavian-Japanese craft beer bar established in partnership with Norway’s Oslo Brewing in 2016, serves everything from Oslo’s own beers to Kyoto Brewing saison to the odd Ballast Point lager, and even house-made ginger ale.
Goodbeer Faucets, centrally located in the heart of Shibuya since 2011, offers 40 craft beers on tap in a modern, spacious interior. Internationally inspired snacks such as Wagyu steak and fries, pulled pork served with a sliced baguette, and a current seasonal speciality, “Jerusalem Mix,” Israeli spiced chicken parts with seasoning, are mouthwatering; and general manager Eldaad “Dede” Bribrom, an Israeli transplant, has an enthusiastic demeanor that’s solidified the bar as both Tokyo craft-beer staple and tourist-friendly respite.
Mikkeller Tokyo, which moved to its current location in 2017 (it originally opened in 2015 in what is now Øl), draws in Japanese and foreign beer geeks alike.
7. Rochester, N.Y.
In December 2018, Brooklyn’s Other Half Brewing had its first can release at Other Half Roc, its new location in Rochester, a city more than 300 miles from NYC by car. The locally lauded release followed several mobile can releases throughout the state.
Its decision to settle down in Rock City was a no brainer: Since 2013, Rochester’s Monroe County has jumped from three to more than 25 breweries. Clearly, this city is thirsty for craft beer.
Fifth Frame Brewing is a brewery, coffee roaster, and restaurant with board games. Three Heads Brewing comprises a brewery, beer garden, and music venue; and Swiftwater is a farmhouse brewery making traditional styles with local ingredients.
While in the Roc, make a stop at Genesee to try New York’s famous Cream Ale, along with other Genesee brews sold exclusively at the brewery.
6. Raleigh, N.C.
Raleigh is having a moment. The population of Wake County, which includes Raleigh, is increasing by an average of 63 people per day, and, as it turns out, many of them have a taste for craft beer.
Taste the revolution at Brewery Bhavana, a combination brewery, taproom, dim sum restaurant, library, and flower shop; and at Trophy Brewing, which has three distinct locations in downtown Raleigh (one for beer, one for beer and pizza, and one for beer and fancier fare). The barrel-aged sours at Bond Brothers, in Cary, earned it USA Today’s Best New Brewery distinction in 2017. Ancillary Fermentation, a conceptual pop-up taproom, will make its next appearance in January. Also in 2019, Gizmo Brew Works will open a second taproom in Chapel Hill, taking over the iconic Rathskeller space, a bar and restaurant in operation from 1948 to 2007.
And in the suburban town of Wake Forest, White Street Brewing produces award-winning traditional German- and Belgian-style ales, including its Kolsch, one of VinePair’s best beers of 2018.
5. Los Angeles, Calif.
Once awkwardly subpar in comparison to other West Coast beer scenes, L.A. is finally beer-friendly — whether you’re in Culver City or Long Beach (the latter gained a new place to eat or drink every week in 2018).
Monkish Brewing in Torrance commands a cult following for its hazy IPAs and oak-aged saisons. Long Beach’s Beachwood Blendery is a VinePair favorite for its gueuze- and lambic-inspired sour ales, and Three Weavers brings community and accessible craft beers, like its crisp Seafarer Kolsch and easy-drinking Stateside Session IPA, to Inglewood.
More cities will get direct flights to the City of Angels in 2019, too. United kicks off new non-stop service between Los Angeles and Eugene, Ore., Madison, Wisc., and Pasco, Wash., this spring, so start planning.
4. Atlanta, Ga.
Georgia’s capital is home to some of our favorite breweries. Monday Night Brewing, our top pick for the Southeast in 2018, has locations near Atlantic Station and Pittsburgh; Reclamation Brewing is favored for its roasty dark brews (we’re partial to its oatmeal stout); and Creature Comforts of Athens brews something for everyone, from pillowy pilsners, to tropical IPAs, to oak-aged limited releases, many of which are not available outside the state or region. The buzzy Variant Brewing is inspiring long lines for its double IPAs, adjunct stouts, and tart farmhouse ales.
Atlanta welcomed several new restaurants this year, too, such as a new location of the Local Pizzaiolo, serving up expertly crafted pizzas alongside a small selection of craft beers like Creature Comforts’ Tropicalia.
Meanwhile, Atlanta is gearing up for Super Bowl LIII kicking off Feb. 3, with 100 bars, restaurants, and venues secured for Super Bowl-related events.
3. New Orleans, La.
A beer lover’s trip to the Crescent City five years ago would have likely included an hour-long trek from the French Quarter to NOLA Brewing, located in the Irish Channel, or as its tagline proudly states, “in a warehouse on the lake side of a street tourists can’t pronounce” (Tchoupitoulas Street). Or, one might have endured an hour-long drive to Abita across Lake Pontchartrain. Now, recent openings citywide are making a Big Easy beercation easier than ever.
“Non-distro” breweries, or those that don’t distribute their beer outside their own taprooms, are keys here. Wash down your beignets and pralines at Brieux Carré, a Marigny brewery offering everything from grisettes to restrained NEIPAs. Head to a trivia night at Parleaux Beer Lab, a small batch brewery in Bywater with styles spanning the sessional to the experimental. Miel Brewery, also in the Irish Channel, is fast becoming a feel-good neighborhood staple, open seven days a week.
Budget travelers, rejoice: Spirit Airlines announced new routes to New Orleans late last year, adding nonstop flights between New Orleans and Austin; and nonstop seasonal service between New Orleans and Philadelphia.
2. Berlin, Germany
Germany’s capital is celebrating two anniversaries this year: 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and 100 Years of Bauhaus, the architectural movement celebrated in a series of events throughout the year, starting with a festival in January.
Whenever you go, stop at Markthalle Neun, an urban food market touting the hipster trifecta of coffee, farm-fresh, responsibly raised food, and a craft brewery, Heidenpeters, in its northwest corner. In hip Kreuzberg’s Wrangelkiez neighborhood, Hopfenreich offers local beers from Spent Collective, Berliner Berg, Bierfabrik, and Stone Berlin. And Brlo Brwhouse, a brewery and taproom located in a shipping container complex in the new, cool Gleisdreieck Park between Kreuzberg and Schöneberg, offers tours along with 20 taps spanning house-brewed Helles and German IPAs, plus local, national, and international selections.
If you’re heading to Berlin in the summer, kick off your visit during Berlin Beer Week, a 10-day, multi-venue beer experience July 19 to 28. The Berlin Beer Cruise on July 19 is a perfect prospect — tickets start at €69 (about $79) and are going fast! — and, if you need an extra boost, check out American Airlines’ new seasonal service from Philadelphia to Berlin-Tegel Airport.
1. Austin, Tex.
There are now more craft breweries in Austin than any other city in Texas. The city is home to some of the country’s best lager brewers, like Live Oak, whose Grodziskie was a VinePair panel favorite for 2018; Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co., which took home two gold medals at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival (GABF); and Austin Beerworks, which won a GABF bronze for its light lager last year.
Austin’s beer-and-food-pairing game is equally impressive, spanning esoteric newcomers like The Brewer’s Table, an upscale brewpub aspiring to an all-Cicerone staff, to Batch Craft Beer and Kolaches, which pairs south Texas’s beloved “Czexan” pastries with local brews.
In January, Austin will host the biannual Pink Boots Society Conference, bringing thousands of women industry members to the city.

What is gluten and how are pizzerias in Oslo, Norway countering it?
Gluten is often seen as a buzzword that will soon be put past us. People tend to question if gluten-free options are even necessary.  Isn’t a gluten-free diet just another lifestyle choice like veganism? These common misconceptions often make it difficult for those on a gluten-free diet to find decent restaurant and pizzerias.
What is important to understand is that a gluten-free diet isn’t just another trend to follow, and is medically necessary for some.
What is gluten and who needs to follow a gluten-free diet?
If you have tried your hand at cooking, you’ll know that mixing flour and water gives the dough a glue-like consistency. This is because the gluten proteins in the flour form a sticky network. Gluten helps food maintain shape by acting as a glue that holds food together.
Gluten is a family of proteins and the two main proteins in gluten are glutenin and gliadin.
Where can gluten be found? Wheat is the most commonly consumed grain that contains gluten, but rye and barley also contain gluten. Since wheat flour makes the base of any good pizza, every pizza restaurant in Oslo will have to consider the effects of gluten.
Is a gluten-free diet necessary for everyone? Most people tolerate gluten, and can consume gluten products without an issue. However, people with certain health conditions cannot consume gluten. Celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and wheat allergies make it necessary for some to go on a gluten-free diet.
Celiac disease is a severe form of gluten-intolerance. It is an auto-immune disorder where the body treats gluten as a foreign invader. When the immune system attacks gluten, it also damages the gut wall and may cause nutrient deficiencies, anaemia, severe digestive issues and an increased risk of many diseases.
It is for this reason that people with celiac disease must follow a gluten-free diet. It isn’t a lifestyle choice or trend one follows but a necessity. People on a gluten-free diet can enjoy naturally gluten-free foods like rice, cassava, corn, soy and beans.
If you have celiac disease or are gluten sensitive, you may be reluctant to order takeaway pizza Oslo when you are too tired to cook or dine at a pizza restaurant Oslo for a relaxed and quick family dinner. Since the base of a pizza is made out of wheat flour, wouldn’t it be impossible to find gluten-free pizza?
With food substitutes to accommodate various types of diets and food requirements, gluten-free pizza is an option for those who can’t consume gluten. At Flamenco Pizza, you need not worry about what to order because they have a range of gluten-free pizza to choose from.
Flamenco Pizza is a great example of how pizzerias in Oslo, Norway are accommodating gluten-free diets. Italian pizzas as well as American pizzas are available in a gluten-free option so you can still enjoy delicious pizza despite being on a gluten-free diet.
Whether it’s for takeaway pizza Oslo or delivery, Flamenco Pizza has a range of gluten-free pizzas for you. Their latest items on the menu include the Spicy Vegetar, which comes with Indian spicy marinated eggplant, leek, cashew nuts, onions and fresh coriander, the Kasmir De Luxe, which comes with Indian spicy marinated chicken, onion, cashew nuts and coriander, and the Granada, with pepperoni, marinated chicken, marinated beef, onions and jalapeños.
Flamenco Pizza, as one of the best pizza restaurants in Oslo, has recognized the need for menu items that cater to people with various dietary necessities. In this age and day, where there is so much awareness about gluten, sensitivities and celiac disease, it is absolutely necessary for pizzerias in Oslo, Norway to include instead of excluding. And this is exactly what Flamenco Pizza is doing.

Thus, pizza makes for a great casual or relaxed family dinner, although it can be said that pizza is a dish most popular among teenagers.
There are many reasons why teenagers love pizza. For one, it’s a delicious dish that goes with any situation. If your friends want to dine-in, there are outlets to bestille pizza from that offer a variety of pies that are wallet-friendly. Pizza restaurants have a casual and friendly atmosphere and are thus perfect for teenagers.

Pizza is also a relatively inexpensive dish and thus teenagers can have a filling meal without spending too much. Teenagers can also have something to their taste with pizza, as no one can resist the combination of meat, sauce and cheese. Not many teenagers like their vegetables so it comes as no surprise that toppings that are heavy on meat are favorites among teenagers. Pepperoni and bacon are absolute favorites, as are pizzas full of cheese.
Some of the Flamenco Pizza favorites include the Flamenco Del Mundo, which has a topping that includes ingredients like chicken, mozzarella cheese, pineapple, cashew nuts and onion, and the Hot Habiskus which comes with pepperoni, ham, beef, onion, black olives, jalapenos and paprika. These pies, along with other favorites like the Flamenco Extra Heavy and the King of Barcelona, are available for pizza levering, Oslo.
If you are looking for more authentic pies or pizza that is closer to its roots, you may want to bestille pizza from the italiensk pizza, Oslo menu. At Flamenco Pizza, this includes pies like Napoli, Roma, Milano, Sicilia and La Bussola. The latter, La Bussola, is a favorite among teenagers as it lets the customer choose up to four ingredients. The customizable pizza option lets teenagers choose toppings that they like instead of having to settle for fixed combinations.
Flamenco Pizza also wants to cater to all pizza-lovers and not let dietary restrictions like being gluten-free stop someone from enjoying a slice of pizza, Oslo. This is why Flamenco pies, including their italiensk pizza, Oslo, can be found with a gluten-free option.
There is also a range that caters to teenagers who only eat Halal. The Bombay Special, for instance, includes Indian spicy marinated chicken, onion and fresh coriander, while the Taco Pizza includes Mexican meat, tomato, peppers, onion, jalapenos, nacho chips, and taco sauce.
The variety of pies at Flamenco Pizza is available for pizza levering Oslo, which makes it easier and convenient to bestille pizza rather than cooking or even dining out. And Flamenco Pizza will deliver to your doorstep your favorite pizzas in no time at all.

The first pizza I ever tasted...
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
One quiet morning a few weeks ago I had a visit from North Wilkesboro Mayor Robert "Landslide" Johnson.  Robert and I go back a long way and our conversations usually don't go on too long until the "good old days" comes up.
Well, shortly after Robert arrived, I had another visitor drop by, longtime Wilkes educator, Ned Pierce.  Ned stops by once and a while to look at all the treasures so neatly displayed here at the offices of The Record and Thursday Printing and, on occasion, brings in something to add to the collection, like the 40's era automobile license tag holder from Midway Pontiac.  This day was another in which he had an item of interest he shared with Robert and me--two flyers from the old Starlite Drive-In Theatre which was located for many years just off Hwy 421 at the intersection of Hwy 115, and, like most drive-ins, showed second and third run movies at a bargain price. The property that housed the Starlite is now pretty much occupied by the Holly Mountain IGA Food Store.
Ned couldn't stay too long, but Robert and I both started telling stories about our visits to the Drive-In during its heyday of the 50's and 60's. One of the flyers was from 1967, and it was amazing how many movies (9 feature length films as well as cartoons and short subjects) they showed between Aug. 20 and Sept. 2, including double features on both the Friday-Saturdays covered by this trifold brochure. Most of  the movies were 5-7 years old, including 1961's "The Great Imposter" with Tony Curtis and 1960's "Cry for Happy" with Glenn Ford and Donald O'Connor.
When we began to look over the second of the flyers, several years older from 1959, the conversation moved on.  The manager was listed as Garland Morrison, and the cashier was his wife Virgie, as sweet an old couple as you could ever hope to meet. One line touted the Star-Lite as the largest screen in Western North Carolina, and we did notice that Starlite was spelled as Star-Lite in the older version, with a phone number 3637-M.    And, yes, we did discuss the movies which were playing which weren't nearly as "old" accordingly, as those in the first flyer.  Two were from 1957, "The Sad Sack" starring Jerry Lewis when he was in his heyday; and Lana Turner in 1957's, gasp, "Peyton Place."
But it was the panel that invited you to the Star-Lite Grill that really caught our attention.  They operated quite a restaurant smack dab in the middle of the parking lot, with hamburgers, barbeque sandwiches and ham sandwiches for only 30 cents each, hot dogs for 20 cents, and popcorn and Cokes for only a dime.  They went on to advertise a double-decker burger for 50 cents, fish sticks and chips for 40 cents, a 1/4 chicken dinner for 50 cents, and then the biggie--P-I-Z-Z-A Pie, with all the trimmings, 80 cents.
I am not sure who had the first pizzas in Wilkes County, but Robert and I both agreed that we had never seen or heard of a pizza until they began fixing them at the Star-Lite Drive-In. The Mayor did add that he thought Glenn's Tastee-Freez was selling pizzas not too long after the drive-in had them.
All in all, the random visit by our friend Ned Pierce ended up being the best part of the day for a couple of old, long-time Wilkes County residents, and we both thank him.  Before our visit was over, Robert and I had talked about so many places to eat that I had to go for an early lunch.
And one more thing.  I love a good marketing line AS MUCH AS ANYONE, and the 1959 flyer had a great one. As noted in the early part of this column, the Star-Lite Drive-In showed second and third run movies.  Apparently, Garland Morrison had that mentioned to him one time too often, and the flyer stated in big bold letters, "ALL OF OUR PICTURES ARE NEW UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THEM!"
           Well said, Mr. Morrison.
  Christmas Cheer
By LAURA WELBORN
We are right around the corner to Christmas and as always we try hard to make it a perfect holiday, yet it can be the time of year that we are the hardest on ourselves.
This year I hope to be proactive and be intentional about this holiday season.
This year I will let others stand beside me, I will seek them out and make it a priority to reach out and be with others.  There is light and darkness in all of us.  The important thing is to focus on the light- how we provide light for others and how we let light in from others.  There is always someone who has dealt with similar emotions and who wants to help you, the trick is opening yourself up to it.
"Life often leads us on journeys we would never go on if it were up to us.  Have faith. Believe.  Believe in yourself through hard times.  Believe in your capacity to heal.  Believe that the answers are out there waiting.  Believe that life will surprise you again and again. Believe that the journey is the destination.
Every single day we have to accept the fact that things will never go back to how they used to be, and that this ending is really the beginning.  Life is endless impermanence.  It means nothing is really behind you.  It means life always begins now and you can have the fresh start you want whenever you want.  Be humble.  Be teachable. The world is always bigger than your momentary view of the world." (Marc and Angel Hack life blog)
Remember to be thankful for all the things you do have.  Let your enthusiasm rise from the darkness by seizing the present opportunity you have to be appreciative.  Breathe it in.  And
then do your best to take the next smallest step forward.
Be thankful for all your experiences (the good and the bad), look forward to the lessons learned along the way and be thankful for the unanswered prayers for they may have been that checkpoint in our lives.  Make this Christmas fun and just enjoy the season- whatever it brings. Open yourself up to others and let your own light shine bright.
Recipe for Failure … A Divided Jerusalem
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel skirted the question of the city's final boundaries under Israeli sovereignty, leaving them to be determined by final-status negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. His stance is in line with the Oslo Accords, to which both parties agreed amid fanfare and a White House lawn ceremony.
But despite the Palestinians' signatory acceptance of Jerusalem's disputed status, their disregard for international law and diplomacy has consistently undermined peace efforts.
In addition to the terror group Hamas, which has sworn to destroy Israel, PA President Mahmoud Abbas's disdain for the rule of law is not surprising. Reacting to President Trump's statement, and no doubt stung by U.S. congressional support for the Taylor Force Act, Abbas declared all previous agreements null and void - perhaps forgetting they were already null and void due to Palestinian denial of Israel's right to exist, and insistence on preposterous pre-conditions to "peace" talks. Is it any wonder that the official, PA fantasy maps, which plasters "Palestine" over the map of Israel, are routinely distributed to their media, educators, schoolchildren and terrorists? Militant Islam is the real replacement theology.
Abbas, who routinely distorts and denies Jewish history in Jerusalem to get his way, and has turned down offers for a two-state solution three times, learned well from his former mentor, Yasser Arafat.
Shortly after Arafat signed the Oslo Accords, he placated the Muslim world by proclaiming the Oslo agreement was merely "the first step on the road to Jerusalem and jihad," author Hirsch Goodman said; Arafat then compared the Oslo Accords to Mohammed's 628 A.D. peace treaty with Koresh-once Mohammed gained enough power, he "slaughtered the Koresh tribe to the last person and conquered Mecca."
Wise King Solomon warned in Proverbs: "When you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider carefully what is before you and put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite." Israel and America are considering carefully what is before them, and they are on the same page: it's counterproductive to sit down with Palestinian "rulers" who desire neither peace nor two states, but who literally want to put a knife to Israel's throat, while touting their own "right" to self-determination. Trump knows this, of course, as does the U.S. Congress, where the Taylor Force Act has strong bipartisan support.
Palestinian leaders' modus operandi indicates beyond the shadow of a doubt that handing over East Jerusalem to a terrorist entity who continuously prove they'll never keep their end of the bargain would be a tragic mistake with deadly consequences for both Israelis and any Palestinians who sincerely desire peace and a chance for a normal life.
If the Palestinian leaders really understood Israel-a vibrant democracy that supports the concept of self-determination and a state for its neighbors, it might dawn on them that bona fide negotiations would propel them at a faster pace to achieve their proclaimed goal. Of course, that presupposes that they really want to live side by side with Israel in peace. If that's not true, then peace talks would be a sham anyway.
If Palestinians realized that real states require statesmanship, they would have had their state long ago. A statesman values negotiation; he perceives that successful diplomacy is not "my way or the highway" but rather, consensus. Bullying, saber rattling, rage, dire threats and violence-not Israel--are impeding the dream for peace which the Palestinian leaders claim to be seeking.
   A Revolutionary Christmas
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
On a recent visit to historical Brattonsville in McConnells, S.C., I had the opportunity to learn about a Southern-style backcountry Christmas during the time of the American Revolution.
Historic Brattonsville is part of a group of Culture and Heritage Museums in York, S.C. Also, included in the group is the McCelvey Center, the Museum of York County and the Main Street Children’s Museum in Old Town Rock Hill.
William Bratton moved to York County in 1766. In the Revolutionary War, he was a patriot, and started with the rank of captain and rose to the rank of Colonel.  After the War Col. Bratton would hold various public offices including S.C. House of Representatives and S.C. Senate
In 1776 Colonel William Bratton built a one-room log home that was added to over time to meet the needs of a growing family.
Celebrating Christmas during the 18th and 19th centuries could be thought of as right or wrong depending on which side you were on. This period was for sure met with much change and growth of identity.
It was not odd to hear the minister say, wait a minute this is not biblical, and church people should not partake.
Traditionally the end of the year had been a time of celebrating the harvest, so the addition of a big Christmas celebration was a challenge to the standard way of doing things.
While Martha, Col. Bratton’s wife was not big on the idea of Christmas she did like a good party and would invite guests for fellowship.
While some people were not pleased with the evolution of the blending in of new Christmas activities, it was not such a challenge for everyone.
The idea of a joyful celebration of life with good food and seasonal greenery with a bit of dancing would eventually start to take hold and by the 1870’s it had become an accepted part of general society.
Dr. John Simpson Bratton, one of many children of Col. William and Martha Bratton built the Homestead House between 1823-1826. The 12-room antebellum mansion which is among other historic buildings on the property,  is certainly a focal point of the now 755-acres Historic Brattonsville site.
During my visit, I met many skilled costumed interpreters. One lady was making biscuits, and I ask; what is the secret to making a perfect biscuit? She said “A lot of love and do not overwork the dough, just don’t overwork it and it will be just fine.” I was glad to hear it; that’s one thing that has not changed over the past 200 years.
I also had a chance to visit with Father Christmas; he explained to me that his job was not easy at the time of the American Revolution.  A lot of walking was involved. He did share a few secrets that made his travel a bit more tolerable. But I don’t think I am supposed to talk about that. It was also interesting that his primary color was green, not red.
As the sun went down, it was by candlelight; that I listened to live period music. I sat and enjoyed the sounds of the past and the smell of freshly made wax candles. It was as if for a moment I had traveled back in time, I felt the nip in the air, I could hear the people nearby enjoying the flames from a fire pit with crackling wood.
Yes, things have changed, but people still have the incredible capacity to come together and celebrate life with smiles, hugs, laughter and a solemn gratitude for the opportunity to do so.
