Flashback Weekend Chicago 2024
I didn't think I was going to go to this convention for many months. After plans fell through to go to the North Carolina one, I didn't want to plan going to another any time soon. Especially not on the weekend of my first wedding anniversary. But an idea came to me late one night after rewatching SeaQuest for the umpteenth time that I just couldn't stop thinking about. Cue me scrambling for the last month or so to cobble together my cosplay, get tickets, and convince hubby to go with me.
More convention details below...
Not pictured is two other bloody dolphins. I had a mini dolphin mounted on my shoulder with magnets, hence the bloody shoulder and neck wound. Ted got a picture of it on his phone, so maybe he'll post it in a story later? Who knows with him? The other was a medium sized one I carried around and offered to people who wanted a picture with me to hold and pose with. The medium one was originally for the photo op, but figured Ted's hands would cover it up if he held it. Hence I got huge Darwin last minute.
In regards to actually talking to him at his table, I introduced him to my husband, who is a sheriff's deputy in our home state of Indiana. Ted predictably adored him immediately. Even more so when my husband gave him a patch from his office. Ted's eyes lit up just like they had whenever I had given him bourbon in the past. He stared at it for a good 10 seconds or more. That first time at his table, between that interaction and getting my Tim action figure signed (where he signed my name wrong, but I get that it was loud in there), we had to come back around because he was getting a long line. Being near the entrance to the vendor floor, he really had to keep the line moving or else he'd get in trouble for causing a blockage.
Second time around, we asked him for specific places to go and see on our anniversary trip up into Michigan at the end of August. He suggested blueberry picking in Saugatuck as we had told him we were planning on stopping in Holland.
Unfortunately, I flubbed the second aim of my con visit, which was to show him my tattoo (shown below) in person.
He was getting a long line again after talking to him about Michigan, so I should've just left and circled back around. But no, I'm a dummy and took my swing. I crouched and asked if I could briefly show him my tattoo away from his table because I knew I'd probably cry when I showed him. He unfortunately said he couldn't because of legal reasons, then was about to suggest I take a picture of it, but I cut him off because I had already done that before and gotten nothing from him. So instead of getting up and coming back later, I insisted I just show him now when he was clearly feeling rushed.
I panicked and just lifted my sleeve and quickly explained how the first three letters spelled his name. He simply said "Wow, that is so special! Thank you for showing me." then shook both my and my husband's hand and turned to the next person in line.
I don't blame Ted at all. He was probably panicking and I was panicking and we both reacted badly in the moment. For the rest of the day, I stressed about redoing it and apologizing for being brash, but I just couldn't find the right time to do so. I got the photo op at the end of the day (where he remembered my name upon seeing me, so that was nice) and had planned to ask for a hug right after it, but unfortunately I panicked again and let my dumb ass get rushed by staff again. We were leaving the photo op area before I remembered and I cursed inwardly at myself.
Funny enough, husband and I had a reservation for our anniversary dinner at a local steakhouse near the hotel. Near the end of our meal, husband said "No fucking way" out of nowhere, told me not to look, but Ted was at a table three tables down from us. I pulled out my phone and pointed the camera behind me, and sure enough, he was standing up near a table nearby. (I got a picture, but I'm keeping it private for my and his sake)
Not wanting to be creepy fans, we decided to just leave him alone. But the universe wasn't done with us yet...
As we paid and headed out the front doors, who do we find but not just Ted, but all 3 Raimi brothers! Well, technically 2 because as soon as we walked through the doors and processed what was in front of us, we saw that Ted was staring out into the street in front of him, completely oblivious. Husband tapped him on the shoulder, but he didn't notice at all and just said aloud "We're lookin for a Kia, right?" and just walks out into the street. We just blink and say "Uh, bye Ted" and the others laughed.
Husband says "Ah, there's Ivan and Sam." I guess we were dressed classy enough because Ivan asked "How do we know you two?" We ended up talking to Sam, Ivan, and (I assume) his wife Terry(?) for about a minute. Didn't last too long and we didn't want to bother them as they were clearly waiting on a ride from a Kia and had had a long day. I saw who I assume was their sister come and hug them good-bye, so we bowed out and just processed what the Hell had just happened.
I promise you that will never ever happen again so long as we live.
I won't get into what all happened after that as it involves me having too much alcohol, but nothing else of note really happened.
We'll see if Ted posts the patch or the mini Darwin in his story, but if he doesn't, oh well. That man has a lot going on in his brain.

A night out with friends turns into a surprise welcome home party for the man who broke your heart, Eddie Munson.
Masterlist Listen to Scar Tissue Here
What to expect: Second Chance Romance set in 2012 Chicago, with flashbacks at the beginning of each chapter. Eddie and Steve are in their 30s. Fem!Reader is given a pet name from each of the guys. No other name mentioned. No use of Y/N. No physical description. Reader does have a bit of personality, as I find it nearly impossible to keep her blank for such a long fic. You may find yourself at times making choices that you wouldn't normally make, but I hope you can put that aside and enjoy the ride. Sensitive Content. 18+ Guaranteed happy ending. This is my love letter to Eddie Munson.
WC:5162. Beta'd by @superblysubpar
“Have a good day,” your mother calls out as you shut the front door to the gray clapboard-sided home that your parents had fallen in love with the moment they laid eyes on it. You hadn’t even gotten past the front steps before she appears in the doorway, pulling her purple terry-cloth robe tighter around her shoulders as she calls you back. “You don’t have to come right home after school,” she tells you, pressing a few folded bills into your hand, “Go out with your friends. Have some fun.”
“Thanks, Mom.” You muster up a smile, shoving the bills into the front pocket of your Levi's, certain they will end up in the ceramic pink elephant bank that sits atop your dresser, just like the money she gave you last week. She watches you walk down the steps, giving you a wave before she turns away, shutting the door behind her.
She tries her best, but she doesn't understand that friendships in the seventh grade aren't made as easily as they were in kindergarten, and you can't tell her that in the six weeks you've been enrolled at Hawkins Middle School, not a soul has spoken to you unless asked to by a teacher.
This was the life that your parents had chosen, a career that demanded constant relocation and upheaval. "It's an adventure," they'd tell you as your things were being packed into boxes. But the older you got, it felt less like an adventure and more like a test. A test to prove yourself over and over. There’s a phrase your mom has uttered so often over the years, that it's surprising it's not embroidered on the throw pillows. Bloom where you're planted. But here, in this town, you're only a weed in the garden.
Hawkins isn't any worse or better than any of the other ten places you've lived in the last seven years, but these kids have been together since birth and aren't eager to welcome newcomers into the flock. Pouring your efforts into being confident and friendly, projecting a cool and unbothered facade, the constant exposure has left you empty. The mask is too heavy, and you’ve been wearing it far too long. If this were one of the comics you kept in the box under your bed, you'd be discovering your superpower–Invisibility. They don't see you here, and maybe they never would.
The edges of folded bills in your pocket press into the meat of your thigh. Adding them to your total should give you enough for the new Elastica CD. With a bit of luck, you might be able to talk your dad into driving you to Tower Records in Indianapolis this weekend. A few houses away, the battered front door of a small yellow cape opens with a click and thud, drawing your attention. The house was more run-down than the others on this street. The grass was left to grow a little longer before being mowed, and a few nights a week, you could hear the yelling coming from inside before seeing the slow flash of lights of a cruiser parked in front.
A boy with curly shoulder-length hair bounds out from inside the house, slinging on his worn backpack as he hits the sidewalk.
Right on time this morning.
The scuff of your white Doc Martens falls in step with the crunch of his black Converse hitting the pavement. The chain running from his back pocket to his hip sways with his movements. It’s more of a determined bounce than a walk. Your eyes stay trained on the frayed holes of his Jansport, corners of textbooks and papers pushing through. You keep waiting for physics to kick in and the thing to give way entirely.
“Quit following me.”
His voice floats over his shoulder, shattering the quiet of the morning. Your head swivels from side to side, looking for whoever he is speaking to. His body turns until he’s walking backward, both hands gripping the straps of his backpack, casting his expectant brown eyes on you.
“Me?” You ask, touching your chipped painted fingernails to your chest.
“You’ve been following me for weeks, and it’s creepy.”
“I’m not following you,” you say incredulously, “We’re just going to the same place.”
“Well, walk on the other side of the street or something,” he says, turning back around, continuing on his way like he assumes you’ll comply.
“No.”
Your defiance comes out flat and solid, drawing a line, sick of him and this whole town.
“Yes,” the word comes back without a glance, utterly unbothered by your show of determination.
“No,” you repeat louder, your eyebrows pulling together in a scowl, “If you don’t like it, you walk over there.”
“I was here first.”
“Seriously?” The anger in your chest turns to heat, rising up your neck and settling in your face. Your mouth opens, ready to unleash the venom sitting on the tip of your tongue when he stops walking.
“Might as well walk beside me then.”
Surprise melts the words in your mouth as your feet carry you forward until you’re close enough to see the freckles covering his nose. His eyes stay forward as his stride lines up with yours, moving forward at a more relaxed pace. A light breeze rustles the leaves of the Maples lining the street. The sound of your footsteps is interrupted by the occasional passing car.
“You’re in seventh, right? You got Schnider?” He asks, his eyes darting to your face.
“Yeah.” You nod, looking down at your boots.
"Bad luck. She's a real bitch. I had her last year."
Answering with a shrug, you risk a look back at him. Long eyelashes framing big doe eyes, a sweet face he tries to hide with a hard shell. He wears a mask, too.
Your brain’s on overload for the rest of the day—thoughts of the boy coloring away the hours like a secret, overanalyzing every bit of your interaction. When the shrill sound of the final bell rings, you join the current of students, gathering your belongings and exiting the building in a wave.
The fresh air is a welcome escape from the stuffy classroom as you cross behind the school past the football field, heading toward the path through the woods where the boy is lingering just beyond the gate, digging through his pack but coming up with nothing like maybe he had been waiting. Without a word, he falls into step beside you. When you look at him, this time, he meets your eyes. The sunlight flickers through the swaying leaves as your footsteps resonate through the trees as you continue together.
"I guess I'll see you tomorrow," his voice cuts the quiet air when you reach the front steps of his house, his tone revealing a hint of uncertainty.
"I'll be headed the same way," you answer.
He turns away from you, pausing with his foot on the top step, looking up at his house before looking back at you.
"I'm Eddie, by the way," he offers, his cheeks pinking at the vulnerability his words carry.
"I know," you respond, a small smile gracing your lips as you continue home.
"Shit. Shit. Shit," you mutter, tucking your phone into your clutch and bolting up the marble steps to the second floor of the Kimpton Grey Hotel. Composing yourself as you pass through the lobby and open the double doors into Vol.39. The bar exudes timeless elegance with its dim, warm light shining on the dark-wood accents. Vintage jazz playing through hidden speakers, sounding like smoke and liquor. Everything here is steeped in leather, old money, and sophistication. It's no surprise that Nancy chose it.
"You're late," Nancy says flatly, no amusement in the blue eyes framed by the blunt cut of her black, sleek hair as she glances at her watch with disapproval.
"Sorry." You slide into the open seat on the tufted couch across from her, adjusting the material of your dark emerald midi skirt so the slit wouldn't be showing off too much thigh, "There was traffic." It definitely wasn’t the extra half hour you spent with your feet up on your desk at Stax listening to the new release from Band of Horses.
"This is Chicago. There's always traffic," she counters, keeping her voice low enough that it doesn't travel past the lit bookshelves lined with leather-bound encyclopedias framing the seating area that your friends are currently occupying. "That's why I gave you a time a week ago. So you could plan ahead."
"She’s in a mood," Argyle says from the corner of his mouth, his hair falling around him like a curtain as he leans closer from the velvet upholstered club chair beside you.
"Where's Steve?" Nancy demands, setting down her crystal tumbler on the gray marble table in the center of the space.
"He's not here?" you ask, scanning the bar. "It was Robin’s turn to watch him."
"Me?" Robin exhales from the other end of the couch she shares with Nancy.
"You're his best friend," you point out with a quirk of your brow.
"Yeah, but you're his–"
"I don't know why I bother to organize nights out for all of us if no one is going to be on time," Nancy cuts off Robin, huffing as she crosses her slender arms over her chest.
"It will be fine, Nance," Johnathan reassures, coming back from the bar carrying a flight of martinis he sets down in the center of the table. "Just relax. Everyone's going to be here in plenty of time." He takes the seat beside her, comforting her with his arm around her shoulder.
Nancy and Johnathan have been on again-off again since she left Hawkins for school in Boston. Rekindling their relationship when she moved to Chicago and accepted a position at Spectrum Media, where she still works as their vice-president of content strategy.
"Plenty of time for what?" You ask, leaning forward to choose a martini, picking the Astoria with a knot of lemon.
"There's a mystery guest," Robin says, wriggling her brows and hooking her thumb towards Nancy. “Full of surprises, isn't she?”
"Where's Flora tonight?" You ask Robin, noticing she is without an escort.
"Flora?" She asks, picking up a drink for herself, "That was over a week ago." She dismisses her with a wave of the hand before running it through her wavy blonde streaked locks, "Sadly, she left for a goat herding commune in Sacramento. I've been seeing someone new, a painter named Taylor. She's on exhibit at Magnolia. Her florals are really dreamy." She bites an olive off the end of her toothpick, sighing.
Smiling around the lip of your glass, you shake your head. Robin works as an exhibit coordinator for Magnolia Gallery in Wicker Park, falling in and out of love with artists as quickly as she sells their pieces. You give her credit, she's having fun.
"Did you text him?" Nancy asks, her lips twisting with impatience. The tense clench of her jaw has you setting down your drink and reaching for your clutch with no arguments. "Do you know how hard it was to get this reservation?"
"Then why are we here?" Argyle complains, gesturing around the room while he slumps back in his chair, swirling the amber liquid in his glass with the other. "You know I own like six bars, right? No reservations required."
"But then you'd be working," Nancy explains, as Argyle smoothes out his handlebar mustache.
"I'm always working, babe," Argyle says with a smirk, looking the part of a restaurateur and music promoter in his shiny flat-front trousers and short-sleeved silk shirt.
Argyle is a new friend - meaning not from Hawkins. The California transplant, whose family owns a chain of successful pizza restaurants, has breathed new life into the Chicago music scene. Booking up-and-coming acts as well as big names into his bars and venues all across the city. He's a good friend to have, especially in your line of work–a music journalist for Stax the city's premiere music, arts, and culture magazine.
“He’s on his way,” you inform them, setting your phone face down on the table before settling back on the couch.
“On his way or leaving now?” Nancy shakes her head, knowing with Steve it’s probably the latter. “Why didn’t you ride with him?” She asks, turning toward Jonathan.
“I wasn’t in the office today. I was on a shoot,” he says, pulling his arm away from her and setting his drink down harder than necessary, his patience with her at an end.
Jonathan, like you and Steve, works for the conglomerate Second City Media. Nancy likes to think that she permits the three of you to work for her competitor, but Steve had already gotten his foot in the door, securing himself an entry-level position at Metro Sports division before she was even out of grad school. Jonathan had been doing alright freelancing as a photographer, but when Nancy started at Spectrum, Second City recognized their competitor would wind up with an edge and hired him on as full-time staff. Everyone knows it's better for their relationship not to be working in the same place, especially with Nancy as his boss.
“Give us some clues about this mystery guest,” Robin interjects to lower the temperature between the couple, which is ready to boil over.
"Okay, I'm here." Steve comes from behind you, his voice alerting you to his arrival before you see him. His tie is already missing, the first three buttons of his starched shirt undone beneath his midnight blue suit, and his hair tousled from a day of running his hands through.
"Really, Steve? You couldn't be on time just this once?" Nancy scolds him, rolling her eyes.
"Meeting ran late. You know how it is," he leans down to kiss her cheek,"Or maybe you don't. I heard things are a bit slow over there at Spectrum," he teases, earning a smirk from Johnathan.
Steve worked his way up from the sports division to chief content officer for Second City Media. The position puts him just shy of the power Nancy holds at Spectrum, fueling the pair's competitive and ambitious nature until their bickering often drives everyone else crazy.
"Steve," Robin draws his attention before Nancy gets the chance to respond, "About tomorrow–"
"Just a minute, Robin. I haven't gotten to kiss my beautiful wife hello." He steps over Argyle's legs and gives the man a quick handshake in greeting before sitting next to you on the sofa.
"I'm not your wife yet, handsome," you tell him as his strong hands cup your cheeks, tipping your head up toward him.
"But it sounds good, doesn't it?" He asks before soft lips close over yours, his thumb pressing on your chin, asking for access to deepen the kiss beyond the line that's appropriate in front of company.
"Niiiice," Argyle hums as the others snicker. Steve takes a hand off your cheek, holding it in front of you to block some of their views as his mouth moves hotly over yours.
"God, you two are sickening," Nancy's remark is probably accompanied by an eye roll, but you're too occupied to notice as you tighten your grip on the front of Steve's shirt, drawing him nearer.
Four of his fingers curl down, giving Nance a one-fingered message as he continues to kiss you until he's had his fill. Breaking away with a gentle peck. "How was your day today, Ace? Did you write me a Pulitzer?"
"You ask me that every day."
Despite teasing you, he wouldn't be surprised if you had what it takes. That's how much he believes in you. He takes your hand, bringing your knuckles to his lips to place a kiss next to the glittering diamond he put on your hand a little over two years ago.
"Excuse you." Robin climbs over Argyle's legs that are still stretched out in front of him, taking up all the space between the chairs and the table, and walks over to the couch, squeezing her way onto the sofa between you and Steve, "Best friend privileges." She winks before launching into a conversation about the next exhibit she's putting together.
"You two crazy kids set a date yet?" Argyle asks at a volume higher than you'd prefer. Raising your index finger to your lips, eyebrows drawing together as your eyes flick over to Steve.
"I'm just making sure my invite didn't get lost in the mail," he says, sipping his drink. "I love weddings, man—all those tiny little versions of regular-sized food. Maybe I should open a restaurant like that, where everything is tiny. Tiny little kebabs and tiki drinks with tiny little umbrellas. I don't know what's taking you so long. You need to make an honest man out of him." His voice grows louder at the end of his sentence, earning him another look from you, a distraction that diverts Steve's attention from his conversation.
The waitress chooses that moment to appear, saving you from another conversation about setting a wedding date. It's not that you don't want to marry him–you do. Someday. Decisiveness has never been your strong suit, along with dressing up in big puffy dresses that look like frosting and being on display for everyone you have ever known and their plus ones.
While Steve squints down at the drink menu, fondness warms you like the opening notes of your favorite song. Reaching across Robin, you tap his chest. He looks over at you as he pulls a pair of glasses from his breast pocket and slides them on his nose.
Your lips move without sound–I love you.
You too, he mouths back. His mossy eyes softening as he smiles just for you.
You're happy. Why change a thing?
“I’ll have an old-fashioned. Top shelf. Please,” Steve tells the waitress after she had gone around taking orders for small plates to share and more cocktails from the others. “Another Martini?” He raises his eyebrows at you.
“Yes, please. An Astoria,” you tell her as she finishes scribbling everything down on her pad and heads off toward the bar to put in your orders.
“The ladies?” You tip your head at Robin, who nods, getting up to follow you. Steve squeezes your hand as you walk by as he continues his conversation with Nancy about the effectiveness of paywalls on digital content.
“God, she’s in rare form,” Robin comments as you enter the empty ladies' room, each of you closing yourself into a stall.
“Are she and Jonathan fighting again?” You ask once you’ve finished up and moved to the sink to wash your hands. The echo of your voices bouncing off the black and white hexagon tiles.
“When aren’t they fighting?” She pulls a few paper towels from the machine bolted to the wall and drys her hands. “It’s like foreplay for them at this point.”
You laugh, checking under your eyes for make-up smears. “Any ideas about this mystery guest?”
“No idea.” She tugs the brass handle of the door open, and you follow her back into the bar. “Maybe her brother?”
“That would be nice,” you say, your boot heels tapping on the dark chevron floors, “He just got married, right?”
“So young, practically still a baby,” she tuts, her head shaking from side to side.
“Robin, he’s not that-”
Robin's hand clamps onto your forearm, a squeal escaping her mouth as excitement radiates through her. She bounces on her toes, leaving you in her wake. Whoever elicited such a reaction is being blocked by Steve and Jonathan. When she gracefully maneuvers past them, you catch a fleeting glimpse of dark curls before the two men shift back into place, obscuring your view once more. The clinking of glasses and chatter from the other patrons swells in your ears. Your feet carry you forward, curiosity resonating like the reverb of a guitar. Steve feels you coming up behind him and shifts to the side. Without warning, rich chocolate eyes are locked onto yours. Eyes you haven’t seen in eleven years when he left you a mixtape instead of a goodbye. The eyes of the man that shattered your heart into so many pieces, all the edges are still sharp.
“Hey, doll.”
The breath trapped in your lungs forms a suffocating bubble, its dull, aching pressure stifling any movement in or out, causing your body to lock in protest. You're tugged forward, unable to fight it, until your body collides with his. The faint but familiar scent of him embraces you, lingering beneath the spicy notes of expensive cologne. Triggering a flood of a hundred painful memories, like songs you’ve overplayed and can’t bear to hear again. They jar your instincts into overriding the shock, compelling you to push him away. Eddie's solid frame absorbs the force. To your relief, the others haven't noticed as you retreat to your seat. Your trembling hand raises your martini to your lips, taking larger swallows than you normally would, but nothing with this situation is normal.
"Desperate times," you mutter under your breath, tipping back your glass. By the time everyone has settled back into their seats, your martini glass stands drained, the lingering taste of its contents bittersweet on your tongue.
Steve directs the waitress to bring another drink for you and a double Mescal for Eddie. The others' voices are a distant buzz in your ears, but their words don't breach the barrier of your thoughts. The chords playing in your mind are more discernible now. Their lyrics printed onto the faded photographs of a boy that you struggle to reconcile as the man before you. He's older, but you are too. His long hair is much shorter, the dark curls a richer brown pushed away from his face. A few lines grace the corners of his eyes and forehead–a reminder of the life he's lived without you.
Steve's comforting hand wraps around your shoulders while the other finds a home sliding between the soft skin where your legs are crossed, exposed by the high slit of your skirt. Eddie's eyes are on you, his stare focused on Steve's big hand covering half your thigh. Your left hand moves on top of Steve's, adjusting to make sure the sparkling rock on your finger gleams with brilliance in the soft, ambient light.
"Well, this is a blast from the past," Robin notes, her voice full of whimsy as she dangles her cocktail glass between two fingers, swaying it gently like a pendulum.
"Aren't you all glad I forced you to come out?" Nancy quips, much more relaxed now that her plan has come to fruition.
"You did good, love," Johnathan murmurs. His fingers tangling with hers before giving her a quick peck.
"Absolutely. I wouldn't have wanted to miss this," Steve agrees, "How long has it been, dude? Three, four years?"
"Yeah, I think that was the last time you were in L.A." Eddie scratches at his chin, covered with just enough scruff to almost be a beard.
Steve keeps in touch with Eddie? Had he told you when you hadn't been paying attention to him, your mind wandering with the words you would write for other people's songs?
"Now, I know that I told you only old friends," Nancy says, angling herself towards the plaid upholstered chair that Eddie occupies. "But Argyle knows all the local talent, and I thought he'd be a good connection to have since you're moving here."
"What?" You ask, as if a sudden vacuum has just sucked the air from the room.
"You're moving here?" Robin's eyes light up with excitement at the prospect of all her friends in the same city. She was the original connection that brought you together all those years ago.
"When you say here. You mean Hawkins, right? You're moving back to Hawkins," you clarify.
"No. I mean here. I'm moving to Chicago," Eddie says, leaning back into his chair, his long legs spread in his tailored black suit, the black v-neck underneath giving off a laid-back California vibe. "I told those corporate studio fucks I was done. I'm opening my own place to record music that's actually good, not just the kind that will sell. I'm surprised you don't know all this, doll. Isn't it supposed to be your job or something?"
“Fu–”
"Why Chicago?" Jonathan asks, cutting you off before you let loose a very appropriate response to his question, "Why not stay in L.A. or New York. Aren't there music scenes bigger than here?"
Eddie tips his head to the side, his fingers tracing the rim of his glass. "You know, L.A.'s lost its charm for me. Too many fake people made out of plastic. And, well, Wayne's not getting any younger. Thought it's about time to be closer, you know?"
“You'd be much closer in Hawkins. Bet you could find a place downtown real cheap. You should go look there.” You cross your arms over your chest, drawing a line in the sand.
“Hawkins doesn’t really scream rock ‘n’ roll, and I already got a place, but thanks,” he says, unconcerned as ever by your tone.
“Look at you two,” Robin says, clapping her hands, “Just like old times, back to your usual banter." Her mischievous grin widens, "Remember when she had that massive crush on you, Eddie? You’d stroll into Musicland during our shift, and she’d follow you around with those big heart eyes.”
Your ears ring as heat rushes up to your neck to your cheeks, the whole world spinning. Eddie looks down, swirling the remnants of gold liquid in his crystal-cut glass.
“You’re exaggerating, Robin,” you sputter, reaching for your drink, hiding behind the lip of the glass, “We were just friends. And it couldn’t have been too major. I don’t even remember it.”
“Oh, come on,” she protests, “Everybody knew.”
"I didn't," Steve's voice cuts through her teasing, leaving an awkward stillness in its wake. The distant sounds of high-pitched laughter and the faint scrape of utensils against plates fill the void. Your friends exchange uncomfortable glances, even though there was no malice in his tone.
“Hey, it’s no big deal, though,” his smile puts everyone at ease. “Right, Ace?” His head dips, brushing your lips in confirmation. You nod as he continues, “Robin, remember when we both went on dates with the same girl. What was her name? Brenda.” His fingers snap with the recollection.
“That’s right, Brenda! Brenda Mackenzie!” Robin laughs and begins to regale the group with the story.
When you lift your eyes, Eddie’s stare remains fixed on you, amusement replaced with an intensity you can’t read. An unfinished sentence or lyric. Words hanging between you like a question that you can't answer—one that you don’t want to.
“I’m going for another drink,” you say to Steve, picking up your empty glass.
“Do you want me to come with you?” He asks, brows drawing together.
“No, I’m okay,” you tell him with a plastered-on smile, “You want anything?”
He shakes his head no. “I let my car service go early. I’ll drive us home in your car.”
With gentle fingers, you sweep aside a stray lock of hair that's draped across his forehead, planting a tender kiss on his lips before making your way to the bar.
There is a soft creak of the leather as you seat yourself on a high stool in front of the polished wood bar. A bartender with an easy smile takes your order and leaves, giving you a much needed moment alone. Your lungs expand and contract without releasing any tension. You study your reflection in the mirror behind the rows of brightly lit bottles. If you could rewind the tape to a few hours ago, you'd have happily stayed in your office. Calling Nancy tomorrow to grovel for forgiveness for messing up her plans. But you can’t and the song plays on. It’s always the music that hurts the worst.
You release an audible sigh, your breath escaping through parted lips, as he settles onto the stool beside you. With a casual tap of his rings against the bar, he signals for the bartender, raising a single finger, his tongue peeks out, grazing his bottom lip as he gestures toward his empty glass.
"What’s the matter, doll? You really that unhappy to see me?" Eddie drawls, a half-smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"It’s been eleven years, Eddie. Sorry I’m not organizing a parade." You settle back into your seat, glancing around as if you're bored.
The bartender lowers his eyes as they deliver your drinks and wisely retreats to the far end of the establishment.
"I didn’t come here to fight," Eddie replies, his tone softening. He shifts his weight slightly on the stool, one arm resting casually on the counter, the glint of a gold chain around his neck catching the dim light.
"Then why are you here?" Your eyes narrow as your fingers trace the condensation on the side of the full glass.
"A fresh start. To build something of my own." He looks at you with determination, his dark eyes reflecting the soft glow of the bar lights.
"Then build it somewhere else," you respond curtly, your words laced with frustration. You pick up your drink and down half of it in one go, the chilled liquid leaving a slight burn as it slides down your throat. Setting the glass back down, you turn to leave.
He stops you with a gentle hand wrapping around your wrist, his touch causing your pulse to quicken beneath his fingertips. "There are some things I want to say to you. Let me take you to lunch unless Harrington has got you on too short of a leash."
You pull your wrist back, the feel of his touch lingering like smoke in the air. "Whatever you have to say has waited this long, try again in another decade. Unless you're dying."
"Would it make a difference if I was?" He meets your gaze with amusement playing on his lips.
"Let me think about it… nope." Your reply is quick and sharp, meant to cut.
"I know you're mad–"
"No. Mad would imply some kind of emotional attachment. What I feel is indifference. In case you don't know the definition, that means nothing at all." Your voice stays cool and detached as you hop off the stool. "It's a big city, Eddie. There's no reason we have to see each other again."
"We'll have to see about that," he smirks.
"Have a nice life," you say a final goodbye to your past and turn away, walking in the direction of Steve when he stops you with one more question.
"Did you listen to it? The tape, did you ever listen?"
The lie comes without hesitation.
“No.”

Fan Expo Denver
IF YOU READ ANNIVERSARY FIRST, THIS HAPPENS BEFORE THAT CHAPTER, I HAD TO WRITE THAT ONE FIRST BECAUSE OF THE SCHEDULE
A/N: originally, this was going to be about the flashback weekend chicago, but after seeing the q&a from the fan expo in Denver i decided to change it
taglist: @volturi-girl-imagines @dessxoxsworld @camiesully @ethanlandryluver @nowitsmissing @aliciacat20 @gabbylovesreading @nikfigueiredo
After leaving the set of Riverdale when the filming wrapped and the wrap party (and the production also gave you and Jack some gifts), both of you returned to LA to rest a little before going to the Fan Expo in Denver
"Tornado, hurry up!", Skeet exclaimed from the first floor, "We still need to go get Jack"
"I'm almost done!", you responded putting a few last things in your travel bag, "At least my suitcase and Tatum's carrier is already there"
"Just hurry up, our flight is at 1 pm"
"Chill dad, I was just making sure that I didn't forget anything", you said starting to get downstairs with your bag and Tatum in your arms, "I'm ready"
"Great, let's get the things to the car"
Taking the suitcases and the bags, both of you along with Tatum still in your arms went to the car parked on the entrance of the house to put the suitcases and carrier on the truck and leave towards the Champion house
"I texted your siblings to come and take care of the garden the day that they can", Skeet said the moment the car started the way
"Okay", you nodded, "And I already texted Jack to say we are on our way"
"And I need you to sleep during the flight"
"What? Why?"
"Because you spent the entire night awake watching TV"
"I was watching Shadow and Bone, and it was incredible"
"And now you have baggy eyes that I can see with all the concealer you put on, how many chapters did you watch?"
"Like half or more of the first season"
"Enough reason to you to sleep during the entire flight, and when we arrive to the hotel I'll take away your iPad during the night so you can sleep properly, understood?"
"Yes, dad", you nodded, "But, hey, at least this time was because of a series instead of hate tweets"
"That's the only good part, but you shouldn't be staying up so late, specially when we are flying, what's the series about?"
"I'm glad you asked!"
For the rest of the road, you spend it explaining everything about the series while Tatum decided to take a little nap in your lap until the car stopped in front of the Champion house where both of you and Tatum in your arms got out of the car to walk to the entrance
"Hi angel, hi Skeet", Anna greeted the moment she openned the door, "Come in, Jack is still finishing packing, he must come down in a moment"
"Can I go help him?", you asked
"Yeah, sure", Anna nodded
"Don't take too long, our flight is at 1", Skeet said
"Okay", you exclaimed already halfway of the stairs
Reaching the second floor, you with Tatum in your arms walked to the door were you knew his room was, noticing the door was open, you leaned into the entrance
"Good morning my love", you sang getting his attention, which made him turn to look at you from his bed where he was finishing his backpack, "You're ready for the convention?"
"Good morning", Jack smiled sharing a kiss with you the moment you entered the room, "Almost, I'm just making sure I don't forget anything"
"Need some help?", you asked siting in his bed letting Tatum walk on the soft surface
"Do you think I over-packed?", Jack asked you, which caused you to open his suitcase, "I feel like I put a lot of clothes only for a weekend"
"Just like what I've told you many times, it's not over-packing, it's having options just in case the outfit you pictured in your head doesn't come out as you imagined it"
"You're right", Jack nodded closing his suitcase along with his backpack, "Are you bringing Tatum's carrier?"
"Yeah, it's on the car"
"Can Butters and Tatum share it? I'm just thinking about the space, the flight and all that"
"Of course! They are going to have fun in there"
"Kids, I'll leave without you if you don't come down in the next five minutes!", Skeet exclaimed from the first floor
Gattering the things and the cats quickly, both of you went down stairs to say goodbye and go to the airport
After two hours in the airport and almost five on the plane (in which you slept almost all the time), the three of you and the cats arrived in Denver when it took an hour to arrive to the hotel, which was close to the convention center
"We're going to settle in our rooms and then we are going to have a small reunion to check the schedule for the weekend", Skeet said while the elevator went up to the right floor, "And we're also getting dinner later with the rest"
"I can't wait to bother uncle Matthew until he unblock me from insta", you joked once the elevator doors openned
"Still?", Skeet asked in shock
"Yeah, I even texted Macey and Addison to help me, but they said he doesn't regret it"
"Why did he block you again?", Skeet asked while openning the room door
"She asked him if Stu's alive", Jack laughed
"It was a joke", you exclaimed while entering the room noticing there was only one bed, "Dad, we aren't sleeping the three of us in the same bed, it's going to be weird"
"The door at the left is your room", Skeet said walking towards that door next to the TV and dresser to reveal a room exactly the same, "I couldn't get a suite with two rooms and this was the closest thing we got, go on to organize your things, we have to be on the meeting room in forty minutes"
Entering you room and leaving the suitcases and bags on the bench next to the desk and the cat carrier on the couch next to the window letting them out to explore the room, you and Jack started to got some things out of your travel bags to the bathroom and baby dragon Jake on the bed
When the hour to go to the meeting room arrived, the three of you and the cats went to the last floor to the meeting room
"Aunt Neve! Aunt Rose!", you exclaimed running towards them the moment you saw them near a table
When they heard your voice and turned in your direction, Neve and Rose inmediatly openned their arms to hug you the moment you arrived
"I swear that every time we see you, you are taller", Neve said when the hug ended
"Not only taller, she also got a tattoo", Rose added looking at your left hand
"It's the sneakers, they have a little platform", you shrugged adjusting Tatum in your arms
"I'm going to asume this little friend is Tatum", Rose said looking at the orange cat seeing everything with curiosity, "She has almost the same hair color I had in the movie"
"I know", you smiled, "Want to hold her?"
"Of course", Neve smiled taking the cat in her arms
After saying hi to the rest and introducing Jack to the ones who didn't knew him in person yet, all of you sat at the tables while someone from the expo arrived
"Goodnight to everyone, it's good to see you", the person greeted everyone, "Okay, the day starts tomorrow as soon at you arrive with the autographs and then with the photo ops, we start with Henry Winkler at 7.40 pm who's arriving early tomorrow, then Rose at 8.00, Jamie and Skeet at 8.10, a team up of Skeet and Matthew at 8.20 and Matthew at 8.30"
"On saturday we have more photo ops starting with Skeet at 3.30, Neve at 3.40, a team up again of Skeet and Matthew at the same hour, a team up of Neve, Jamie, Skeet and Matthew at 4.10, Rose at 4.40, a team up with everyone at 4.50, individual ones of Henry, Jamie and Matthew at 5.10"
"On sunday we have the photo op with everyone at 11.10, Rose at 11.20, a team up with Neve, Jamie, Skeet and Matthew at the same hour, Jamie at 11.50, a team up with Skeet and Matthew at 11.50, Skeet at 12.20, the panel with Neve, Jamie, Skeet and Matthew with surprise aparitions of Y/N and Jack at 12.45, Matthew and Neve had individual photo ops at 1.50, and that's the end of the event, by the way, there's an Avatar cosplay meet up at 2.30, Jack, would you like to attend?"
"Sure, sounds good", Jack nodded
"Perfect, the schedules were already sent to you to your emails, any questions?"
"Can we bring our cats to the panel?", you asked raising your hand
"Of course, we are pet-friendly"
Hearing that, you and Jack high-fived while the adults looked at both of you with fun
After two days of being locked in the hotel to not ruin the surprise appearence, you and Jack finally got to get out to the hotel to go to the convention
Doing a reference to the franchise you decided to wear a white short-sleeve top, high waisted jeans and black run star hike converse, with a small silver backpack were you had yours and Jack things, with some cat treats and toys; while Jack used a black tank t-shirt with an open black and red short sleeve button up, his worn out jeans and checkerboard vans
When the time to go to the convention center arrived, you and Jack stayed backstage until the time to the panel arrived
"How are you feeling?", you asked while having breakfast from one of the food stations on the convention, "About going there with the OG's and answering questions"
"Good, a bit nervous", Jack admited
"This things are usually easy and funny, like they ask the funniest question ever and then you got the most serious and emotional question, like a live interview, actually this is my first time going on stage, I usually was sitting on othe first line or something like that"
"They are going to be surprised when we apeare there"
"Totally, we should prepare something to say when we apeare"
Continuing to have breakfast and planning what to say, the time to start going to the hall arrived, joining the adults to go there
"Hey, I saw the trailer of your new movie", Neve said to Jack refering to Retribution, "It looks awesome"
"Thanks", Jack smiled, "I really appreciate it"
"Where was it filmed?", Jamie asked, "The locations looks cool"
"Berlin, I filmed it right after Avatar"
"Spends four years running around and then he gets to sit in a car the entire new movie", Matthew joked
"Give my boy a rest", Skeet spoke
"Yeah, he needed to rest for the killing spree", you said
Keeping with the chatting and small jokes, the way continued until you reached the behind the stage, when the sound of a lot of fans behind the curtains could be heard
"Okay, kids, both of you look good as well as Butters and Tatum", Skeet sighed before entering the stage, "Rose and Henry are going to appeare for a few seconds so you have to enter before them, understood?"
"Yes", both of you nodded
"Perfect, see you in a few seconds"
"Please welcome to the stage first, give it up for Jamie Kennedy! Keep that applause going as we welcome to the stage Skeet Ulrich! Alright next up Fan Expo Denver please welcome Matthew Lillard! And last but certainly not least please welcome Sidney Prescott herself, Neve Campbell!", the lead of pannel said while the four adults entered the stage and took seats in the couches, "Wow, Matthew, brought a professional camera on stage, very nice! Thank you all for being here, give it up one more time for them Fan Expo Denver"
Hearing softer applauses, both of you decided to get close to the curtain next to the stage
"We've got a lot of questions in the audience, we wanna get to them as soon as possible because that's what this is about, it's about the fans asking their questions", the lead continued, "But I just wanted to keep things off, 1996 was an amazing year for film in general, we had films like Twister, Mission Impossible, The Robbery, you might have heard of another film called The Craft that came out that year everybody, with Skeet and Neve with the reimagining of the horror franchise with everyone's favorite Scream film, there's six films and the fans are still ravenous for this franchise, I'd just love to kick things off before we go to the fans and talk go down the line and just talk a little bit of what it means to be a part of this and what it feels like to have the fans come and tell you how important this horror franchise was"
Deciding to enter right before the conversations start, both of you came out of the curtain to stand in front of the stairs
"Excuse me, is this econ?", Jack asked refering to the alibi of his character
"Best known as Ghostface 101", you added
"Everyone, please welcome Jack Champion and Y/N Ulrich!", the lead exclaimed, "They are going to be with us during the panel so you can ask them questions too"
Entering the stage between the applauses of the people, both of you stopped in the middle of the stage to held Butters and Tatum like in The Lion King, before turning and sat on the couch between Neve and Skeet taking the two left microphones
"Guys, we're so happy you're here, I'm going to go with you in a few moments, but before I want to hear everyone responses to the question", the lead said, "Jamie, we start with you"
"It's incredible", Jamie started, "I think we hit lightning in a bottle when we did the movie, we were this little movie, we just thought 'well, maybe we can do good in video' and so much to say but it is incredible and was just hit lightning in a bottle, and here we are 27 years later, it's incredible"
"It's kinda of certainly in the moment none of us could process that this would ever exist, that people would still involved, you know, into this series", Skeet continued, "We're just a bunch of kids we've got together to do what we love to do and I think that's the power of finding what it is your love to do and you never know what will happen with it, certainly I could never predict this so thank you all, thank you each and everyone"
"Oh my gosh, everyone behind the curtain is Rose McGowan", the lead exclaimed while Rose took a seat in the empty couch, "Rose thank you for joining us, Rose has a solo pannel later at 2 pm so definitely check that out, but thank you for joining us on stage"
"Hi everybody", Rose greeted, "Scream forever, literally this is amazing, I just wanted to come and say that Tatum lives and I love you all the fabulous, beautiful panel"
Finalizing that, Rose left the panel with everyone smiling for the cameo
"Let's not forget that Rose will be at her table all day, and also is doing solo panel so for you all Rose McGowan fans, and those Chramed fans out there in the building check it out at 2 pm right over the next door, Matt, talk about the legacy and what this franchise means to you"
Pretending to not know what to say, Matthew stayed quiet with a panic face making everyone laugh before answering the question
"First of all is very humbling that so many people showed up today, I think we are all sort of amazed and honored, we were making a horror movie with Wes Craven who hadn't made a good horror movie in a long time, God bless his soul we love him, but in the moment it was nothing special, it's not until now that you recognize that you were in the middle of something, so for us it was just one of the greatest times we've ever had working and the results are baffling to us in a way cause every single time we get these opportunities to interact it is humbling, so we are grateful you guys, thank you"
"Oh my gosh, it's principal Himbry everybody, it's Henry Winkler", the lead exclaimed at the same time Henry entered the stage causing everyone to stand up to give him a standing ovation before sitting again, "Oh my gosh, all this surprises that we didn't planned ahead of time"
"I only have two things to say", Henry spoke, "28 years ago I had lunch, sushi lunch, with Wes Craven who wore tweed and you would think you were talking to an english professor and he said 'I have this small part in my movie, would you do this' I said of course, and then turned out to be this incredible sociological event, and I wanted to say I have not seen these people for 27 years, except of course the young ones, we saw each other at another Comic-Con at it was like we've been together forever, they are everything you imagine they are, and that is just the truth, there is no hyperbole in that, and the second thing is I was there and then I was told they're not gonna put my name on the movie because I made the funds and he was going to throw the balance of the horror off, so I went 'okay' and we're not going to be on the one sheet, we will not be in the commercial poster, I won't be there either and I went 'okay' and then they previewed the movie and my character walked on screen and I got applause, and the same people who said 'go home', said 'excuse me, would you do press for the movie', and never know in our business have the greatest summer, be careful and take care of each other, and I'm so proud to be a member of your family"
The moment Henry finnished his speech, Matthew was quick to stand up and hug him followed by the rest of you to applaude him, being the next people to hug, even if he didn't know you and Jack to well
"I don't like sitting on the stage, I'm going to walk around", Matthew said taking him camera, "I'm really don't like it"
"Can we hear from Neve really quick?", the lead spoke, "You know, you're arguably the best final girl of all time, one of those characters, what it does make you feel? And Matt I'm going to let you take it away with the audience questions"
"I thought you were actually talking to Matt when you said that", Neve joked causing everyone to laugh, "I'm sorry, Henry is such a joy, I mean he's just the most magical, these movies changed my life, made my life, changed my life, you know as these guys said, we had no idea, there was no way to have an idea, you would never, how often does this happen that you get to make this many movies and have it be successful and more importantly loved, you know, I can't believe I'm sitting in front of you guys, I feel like every time we have an audience like this and whenever I see this guys and whenever anyone comes up and tells me that Sidney save them or that these movies help them in some way it's just tremendous, there's no way to really fathom the reach that it's had, and I'm so so so grateful and so grateful to you all"
"Jack, Y/N, anything to say?"
Sharing a look, Jack encouraged you to spoke first
"I've been in love with this franchise since the moment my siblings put the mask on me and later when I saw them at eight years old, even my cat is named after one character, and seeing it to keep growing and having more fans because these are classics is something amazing, like I had classmates that aproached to me saying things like 'I saw Scream the other day, can you tell your dad he was scary' was something that made me realize these movies are going to be forever, so seeing fans all over the world no matter the age is amazing"
"Yeah, this movies are athemporal, like you can see them at any year and don't think that they're old or something like that, because they have iconic characters, scenes, moments and more, you can see people of all ages talking about them, and honestly when I was younger and saw them I've never think I would be able to be a part of something this big but I'm grateful to play one of the recent ghostfaces and meeting incredible people"
"Let's give it up for the cast of Scream everybody", the lead continued causing the public to cheer, "Alright, let's go with the audience questions"
"There's a line, so why don't you do the first question?", Matthew said to someone in the audience from where he was standing next to them
"Um, do you guys have advice for young people who are trying to be in the world of acting?"
"A million things to say", Skeet responded, "Several things and I'm sure everybody could add more to it but um never quit, never quit living your dream, never quit believing in yourself, never let Hollywood be the standard for success in your mind, finding what you love to do is the success, so congratulate yourself and that and then continue to grow as a person and as an artist and express yourself, don't follow anybody else, be you and I guarantee you that you will find success in more ways that you can imagine"
"My name is Silah, and I've seen every single Scream movie", a kid started to say
"That's a baby", you exclaimed with cuteness
"It has the same age as Trinity when we started filming Avatar", Jack added without the microphone, "Maybe younger"
"Where are your parents?", Matthew asked making everyone laugh, "Child Protective Services, that child is like five"
"So, I'd like to know what's your favorite scary movie"
"I love the movie called The Changeling with George C. Scott", Neve responded
"How old are you Silah?", Jamie said
"Eleven, I know I'm short"
"Listen, there's these movies out there called Barney", Jamie joked, "Silah, I'm just going to say Showgirls, absolutely I am, don't watch that!"
"I love 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', 'Hereditary'", Skeet said
"REC is one of my favorites", you responded, "Pearl, Jennifer's Body, Carrie, Don't Breathe"
"I'm going to go with 'The Shinning'", Jack spoke
"Matthew, do you have a favorite horror movie?"", the lead said noticing Matthew returned to the stage
"I came back to the stage because there's so many people, I usually like roaming around and trying to touch you and... I want to come back to the stage, my favorite horror movie is Scream, Silah, you did a great job asking that question", Matthew said, "To the young person that just said what do you do as an actor, can I just chime in on that? So here's what I'm going to say, wherever you are, here's the deal, there's a lot of people on this room and some people are outside the norm that don't like sort of fit in the middle of high school and don't walk the way other people walk through life, and so some of those people are actors, and artists, and singers, and dancers, and I don't know, whatever you do that's not normal those people that don't play football, the most important thing is you find your people and do your shit, that's the right way, do not ever rule it by success, just follow a passion, I don't give a shit what it is, go do your thing and you will find your way to Hollywood or wherever is going to be but find what you love to do and fly that flag, periodt, and there's to many people so I'm going to sit back in here"
"Hi guys, I'm Adam and I'm a big fan, so you guys are arguably a part of one of the biggest casts for any horror movie ever and obviously the films that have followed kind of a similar formula of following just commentary on horror movies as a whole, but in the first and sixth movie I was wondering if you guys, spoiler alert if any of you haven't seen this movies why are you here, but did you guys know that Billy Loomis, Stu Macher and Ethan Landry were going to be the killers going in or was kept in the dark for you guys as well?"
"I knew", Neve responded making everyone laugh because of the way she said it, "I didn't know, but I think some cast were kept in the dark"
"Yeah, we knew", Skeet nodded
"It is always in the dark", Matthew joked
"I love Being and I Know What You Did Last Summer", Jamie sais answering the previous question, "Um no, we knew in the first one that they were and I'll let these guys answer but the second one is where we didn't get a lot of details"
"That's right", Neve nodded
"I knew my character was going to be ghostface when suddenly Liana, who plays Quinn, and I got a new wardrobe test programmed, they show us the robes and the masks with our scripts for the final act, and I got to use the costume for the appartment attack", Jack responded
"Hi I'm Jake, and speaking of the second movie my question is pretty much for anyone, but with the second movie production was incredible quick, several script re-writes, was there ever a moment where you doubted Wes Craven or Kevin Williamson during those moments?"
"Never", Jamie said mostly looking at Neve while talking, "The script came on and the next thing we know, we were making a sub-movie called Stab and in Stab, Luke Wilson is like 'I'm going to play Skeet', and Heather Graham was in it, and it was like we had a cast within a cast within a cast and it was incredible, and like, the moment they green light, you're on the cover of Rolling Stone, remember?"
"Yeah, that was a great timing", Neve laughed
"Yeah, you guys were dead and you two weren't born at the time", Jamie joked
"Next question", Matthew said, "What's your problem, bro?"
"Shout out to Wes Craven obviously, the filmmaking genius, but shout out to Kevin Williamson the writer", the lead commented, "The movie feels fresh, you know"
"They were both incredible, you know, clever and sure, these films are complicated to get right and that doesn't mean that there wasn't doubt within them of like, you know, having to question and go over things and do rewrites and stuff, but we didn't, I certainly didn't doubt that they wouldn't, that they would get it, you know, what I mean it's just a process especially when it's a who done it, yeah it takes a minute"
"Hi, my name is Gabby, and my question is for Y/N, I know you're a swiftie, I am too, so my question is, which Taylor Swift songs would you relate to Scream?"
"That's an amazing question, Gabby, excellent music taste", you exclaimed adjusting Tatum in your lap, "Welcome to NY for this recent movie because is set there, Bad Blood for the betrayals, Vigilante Shit for the ghostfaces focusing on the line 'I don't dress for women, I don't dress for men, lately I've been dressing for revenge', No Body No Crime for when they are pointing the suspects for the phrase 'I think he did it, but I just can't prove it', I Did Something Bad for Sam, Mastermind for the ghostfaces and their plans, The Great War for Sidney, Gale, Sam, Tara and the rest of the survivors, I Knew You Were Trouble for Sidney and Billy's relationship, I think that's it, and I can't wait for Reputation Taylor's Version to be released"
"And I also wanted to give you a gift", Gabby added
"You're so sweet, I'll go with you"
Leaving Tatum in Neve arms and your microphone in your spot in the couch, you went down the small stairs to sprint towards her and share a hug, before breaking it
"I hope you like it", Gabby said giving you the gift bag
"Thank you so much", you smiled taking it in your hands, "I'm sure I will"
Returning to the stage with the gift bag, you took sit again in your spot between Neve and Jack leaving it on the floor next to you, taking Tatum in your arms again and the mic
"Open it! Open it!", Matthew started to chant followed by everyone in the room
Laughing, you picked the gift back again letting Tatum walk towards Jack and Butters to openned it, seeing first something that felt like a throw blanket in black
"It's a blanket", you said getting the blanket out of the bag to start to unfold it noticing a bundle of curly chesnut hair and a forehead which you knew perfectly, "Is this what I think it is?"
"What is it? We want to see", Jamie said
Unfolding it completely, your suspitions were correct when the photo of Jack in his Stabathon shirt was revealed as the design of the blanket
"No way!", Jack laughed covering his face with his hands
"This is amazing", you laughed letting everyone in the panel see the blanket, "I'm going to sleep in this for the rest of my lfe"
"Can I ask what was the reaction of the store when you ordered this?", Skeet asked the girl who gave you the gift
"I don't know, I ordered it online"
"You can order these things online?", Matthew asked
"You'd be surprised for all the things you can order there", Neve joked
"I'm going to start using it right now", you said covering yourself and Tatum with the blanket, "It's a bit chilly here"
"This is certainly a unique gift", the lead commented, "Can we go to the next question? We are a little thight on time"
"My name is Ally, my question is because like you guys have thrown around, you guys manhandled a lot and um, we were watching the movie last night and like the scene were Sidney stabbed Billy in the chest with an umbrella, ouch, so I was just wondering if any of the injuries that you've got, like, have you got hurt on set and if so what was the worst injury that you've got on the set of Scream or any movie, more certaimly Scream"
"I feel like I hurt myself", Neve joked, "It was never other people, it was my enthusiasm, I think sometimes I would be a bit too much go-getter and I could've held back on a few things but nothing terrible"
"The scene between obviously Billy and Stu, that iconic final scene, one of the best scenes in horror movie history, am I right?", the lead added, "Where we're seeing them reveal themselves as the killers, there's a lot of stabbing going back and forth, the shooting, any sort of alterarions there"
"I know what Matt's gonna say", Skeet spoke, "The phone really hurt, you know, really hurt to be hit by the phone"
"That was totally not cool", Matthew said, "Yeah, it's funny, that whole scene I think is a testament to obviously Wes and to Kevin but I want to say that the, like, we were again young kids hurling energy at 18 pages of dialogue or 20 pages of dialogue and they were night when we would shoot, you know six pm to six in the morning enery single night for like three weeks and at some point when you're in that kind of energy for that long you start to loose your mind a little so there are moments in that thing where I had these distinct memories of the three of us sitting in like the living room against the wall and this is before cellphones just so we're clear, that's how old this movie is"
"They actually talk to each other", Neve joked
"That's super weird everyone", Matthew continued, "But all three of us had blood in our bodies and literally we would all sit there and just sticky, your fingers would be like sticking with the stickiness and I'd look at Neve and be like 'look' and then do the same to Skeet and that's a true story and, that's so really what got hurt was our minds"
"I'm Kennedy, so I love it-"
"Great name", Jamie interrupted
"So I love horror movies and the Scream franchise but how I got into horror movies or scary stuff was Scooby-Doo and so, so it was a big impact in my life and I was wondering, for Matthew, what was it like being on the set for Scooby-Doo like for the live action, because that was a big for me when I was younger"
"First of all thank you for your question, um, so that was a very difficult journey because you're taking a two-dimensional character that everyone knows, that I grew up with and trying to make it into a three-dimensional real person and your best friend in the movie isn't there ever, he's never there, he never shows up, but I was lucky that there was a man in Australia who is the off-camera voice who is Neil Fanning, thank Good, who is the off-camera voice and he was with me the first and second movie and that movie for me, for a long time hung on me like this I was kind of embarrased about the film, the first one was great, the second one was like ah, and I didn't work-"
"The second one is the one I always watch", Kennedy interrupted causing everyone to laugh, "I wasn't a fan of the first one"
"Fair enough, fair enough", Matthew laughed, "The best part about that movie and the franchise is that the legacy of that part for me has given me purposes my career goes on as I'm waning and getting older and my time in this industry is coming relatively to an end there's-oh stop, I'm gonna die, it's gonna happen, I'm just hope I make like CNN, that's all I want, 'today that guy from that thing died'- but listen, the great thing about that for me is that this moment right here is so validating for my entire life, is that you get to hold space for a character that means something to other people, the same thing that Neve just said is that we cherish doing something that resonates with people, I have lots of movies that are really terrible that nobody gives a shit about it, but to have one that you come up and mention today is literally profoundly, gratifying in my life so thank you"
"Skeet, we're seeing this younger generation now being introduced to the films of Scream, literally in the movies we're getting the next generation, we got Jack here who is part of them, you got to return to it, what is it like seeing like the new generation and actually being part of that storytelling in the newer films", the lead asked
"First of all it's an honor to be asked to be a small part of it, to be any part of it, you know, I feel like the group that took over, Wes would be really proud and I'm sure Neve could speak to that more having to spent more time with theme on set more than I did in five"
"We were only there for one day", you commented
"Exactly, for this last one we've got to stay the entire filming", Skeet nodded, "But I feel like they were really focused on honoring Wes and the franchise as a whole and I think they did a great job and I think they brought it, there's an excitement you know, when I watched it for the first time, it's relevant and it's now and yet it's still harkens back to what the story is and what the legacy of the story is, I think they picked a great group of people to tell it, it's wild because Mason Gooding I worked with his dad Cuba Gooding a couple times so it's wild to you know be that old, my boy Jack right here was a great character and put a lot of heart in his interpretation, I think the franchise is in great hands and you know, I was very honored to be a part of it, even my youngest Y/N is now part of it, however little that was it was fun, I mean unfortunately we didn't get a lot of time on set and COVID was when we were shooting the fifth one so we didn't get to like wasn't, I got to work with Melissa and that was kind of it, and the sixth there was no one with me on set, not because of COVID it was just the green screen and all that stuff you know I was alone with it, but again, just honored to be asked to be a part of it"
"Y/N, you mentioned before that you grew up with the movies and know you are part of them, you had a cameo on this last movie, can you told us how did you end up in there"
"Yeah, I did my cinematographic cameo debut in this movie, and for those who haven't noticed me, I'm in the Halloween party at the start using a FP Jones costume, so the talks about me doing a cameo started during the filming of the fifth, I think Radio Silence saw my enthusiasm for being in the set and heard me and Melissa talking about the films and that, and also dad mentioned it that I saw the movies at a young age, so before we left the set they mentioned it and I inmediatly said yes of course, but because I was a minor at the time mom and dad had to give their permition, and when the time to film aproached, they send us our contracts and that, and later we flew to Montreal to film, but they didn't told me what my cameo will be until two or three days before filming, and I feel like my father right here needs to tell this next part of the story"
"I already know what her cameo will be because they send me an email a week before filming so the morning before our flight I entered her room while she was sleeping, went to her closet, got the serpents jacket and put it on my suitcase and she didn't know I took it until that moment"
"So, long story short, they get me on costume and make up, went to set, got a date, film my part and never returned to set to avoid being spoiled of everything"
Finishing your storytime, everyone was laughing because how you tell everything, before continuing with the next question
"Hi, I'm Lily, first of all, it's awesome to be able to talk to literal legends"
"Where are they?", Skeet joked, "Henry left"
"And also, Neve you're like my literal hero so it's nice to see you in person like this is blowing my mind right now, and then my question for all of you is what was your favorite scene or line from the movies that you did?"
"You know, it wasn't necessary, I mean for me one that I think and it's probably the one I guess get asked to sign the most but to me has seems to have the most relevant psychologically in my life and probably a lot of people's lives and is 'we all go a little mad sometimes' because we do, we do and I think you got to allow that in yourself, but that one for me"
"I don't now", Neve laughed, "I've done a lot of these"
"What's your favorite of all of theme?", Matthew asked
"My favorite line of all of them? I'm Sidney fucking Prescott, of course I have a gun"
"I like, we improv stuff in that last piece that I like so I think the one 'my mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me', you're laughing at the end of an horrific movie, so that was mine"
"I had fun saying all the dialogues of Ethan before and after reveal, but the one I like the most is 'it's not enough to just kill someone these days, you have to assassinate their character first'"
"You know, I don't say anything at all during my less than five minutes on screen so I'm just going to say a phrase of this last one that I think about everyday", you said, "Who gives a fuck about movies"
"That's a lot because we have so ones we like, I probably think mine was 'I was never so happy to be a virgin', well that rule being said it's weird because I died in the second movie tragically and I don't remember getting any sex, so something went on I don't know where, I don't know, you know what, what's amazing about you guys is that you guys teach me and all of us do stuff that we don't even remember about the films so somebody said when I was talking on the phone or with David there was a fourth rule in Scream 2 and I don't know what it is and somebody came up to me the last convention and said 'the fourth rule is never kill the voice of the audience' and I was so touched, anyways, sorry guys I'm avaliable for birthday parties"
"Hi, my name is Kyla and I have a question for Matthew, well two questions, did Skeet ever apologize to you and why did you block Y/N on instagram?"
"I'm so glad you asked that question", Matthew smiled
"I gotta go to the bathroom", Skeet joked
"I just want to say thank you so much, no, you know what you never did and I'll let her explained why I block her", Matthew said turning to give his back to you
"Uncle Matthew, I'm sorry for asking if Stu was alive, it was a joke that you didn't took well, can you forgive me?"
"I forgive you, because at least you didn't hit me with a phone, I'll unblock you after we finish this panel"
"Matt, I know it's been a while", while Skeet was talking, Matthew decided to stand up an walk a few steps far, which made Skeet do the same to get closer to him, "Matt no"
"I'm getting colder"
Finally standing by his side and thanks to Matthew having his hand streched out behind him to stop him for getting closer, Skeet took his arm, while everyone was dying of laughing
"I just would like to apologize for this something I did like 27 years ago, honey"
"I don't accept, I don't accept"
"I was upset in the moment, I was lost"
Accepting the apology, Matthew turn around to hug Skeet
"I'm sorry"
"Somebody called us the first"
"The husbands of horror", Skeet completed
"Dad and dad!", you exclaimed
"Our hugs are not sideways in private", Skeet clarified before sitting
"I'm Alex, if you can pick one character from every Scream movie and it can't be your own to save, who would you pick?"
"I would say Henry Winkler obviously", Skeet responded but then he saw Matthew's face, "Wait, wait, wait, let me apologize"
"Jamie is sitting right there, Jack is sitting right there", Matthew exclaimed, "Jamie is the voice of the audience"
"Henry had all of those great rules"
"And Henry also attended his econ classes"
"I would say Jamie Kennedy and Jack Champion", Matthew said, "I don't remember their characters names, Randy and Ethan over here, I actually think that both Jamie and Jack are gifts, Jamie in that movie is lovely, and Jack is a very talented young man and we both died with the same TV in the head"
Feeling emotional, Jamie ran to hug Matthew who was quick to stand and try to scape but it was late, because Jamie hug him and almost jump on his back
"I have a husband!, Matthew explained, "I have a husband!"
"Who I would save?", Jamie spoke once they returned to their seats, "That's hard to ask"
"I'm right here", Matthew replied, "You don't have to tell me, cause I'm still alive"
"He's still alive, how many people believe that Matthew is still alive", Jamie continued, "I think you're still alive, I would save you if you weren't alive, but if not I would say David"
"I can't say either of these two because I killed them and I wouldn't be the hero, but for me it would be Randy and then Dewey", Neve responded, "It was so painful to watch that"
"Shotout to David Arquette and Courtney Cox who are part of this big family", the lead commented
"I think I'm going to say Quinn, because she's my sister, and also Dewey"
"I have a top five of characters I would save", you said, "Tatum, Jennifer Jolie, Randy, Anika and Ethan"
"You wouldn't save your father?", Skeet asked with pretended indignation
"Billy was a walking red flag, sorry dad", you justified, "I mean, the first thing he says to Sidney on the movie is that The Exorcist reminded him of her"
"You are so right", Neve nodded
"Hi, my name is Nik and I have a question is for Jack, first of all, you were awesome in both Avatar and Scream, so I was wondering who would win a fight between Spider and Ethan?"
"First of all, thank you so much, I really apreciate it, and related to the question, I've never really thought about that, I mean they both have good qualities that can help them in fighting and that, but I think that Spider will be the absolute winner, because um he grew up in Pandora, learned how to fight like the na'vi with all the weapons and fight styles, so yeah, my final answer is Spider"
"Hello, I know you guys are like from movies where a person literally murders people, but what's your favorite Pokemon?"
"What Pokemon are you?", Matthew asked
"I'm Mimikyu"
"That's my favorite", Matthew said
"Mine too", Skeet followed
"Yes, he is a good Pokemon"
"Hi, I'm Liv, I'm a huge fan of Scream but I'm also huge fan of Riverdale, and I was wondering, Skeet, what was it like moving from a serial killer to a dad?"
"Yeah dad, how it was?", you joked
"You're obviously not a parent, it's so close, it's almost the same thing", Matthew said to the girl who asked the question
"Um, you know, yeah I became a dad in real life, well before in Riverdale, but I'm I love that cast, Y/N had the opportunity to go back and Jack got to meet them a week ago, you know, Cole Sprouse is a dear friend of mine, us, now, one of the sweetest, smartest, kindest people, yeah, I missed those guys, in terms of playing it, I don't know, I've been a dad for fifteen years at the point I started that role so I didn't feel that much of a stretch, what was a stretch was, I like to think of myself as a really good dad and he was not a good dad at all, so that was kind of fun to let those demons a little bit, but thank you, thank you so much"
"Can I just add on to that?", Jamie asked, "I think that Skeet is not a dad, he's everybody's daddy"
"Not that word", you exclaimed before covering yourself and Tatum completely with the blanket
"All I know is on Father's Day, my older daughter Naiia writes 'dear father', well you can't write 'dear daddy'", Skeet joked before pointing at Jamie, "Thanks to people like you"
"That word is forbidden in our house", you said uncovering your head
"I didn't say zaddy", Jamie continued
"This got weird", Matthew commented, "Next question"
"Please", Jack said
"My name is Juliet, and my question is if there was like anybody who's like death you would want to be, because there like a lot of cool deaths, which death would you rather have I guess"
"Favorite kill, that's always a good, hard question", Skeet commented
"Tatum", Neve said
"Yeah, I've always wondered what it'd be like to go through a garage door opener", Skeet joked
"Thank God we don't have one", you also joked
"What I was gonna say is that we've got a ton of fans out here, um three thousand plus people that have lived and brought up with you, so many young generations that are now discovering this, I'd love that each one of you just kind of went down and just said, you know how the fans mean to you and all the folks that are here to just being in your presence and you know honor the films that you created", the lead said, "Do you have any final words for the fans?"
"First of all, thank you for your question, we were not like throwing that aside, thank you so much", Skeet said, "It's hard to express to be honest, you know, people outside of this world who you know or even actors who don't really necessarily know what we're doing here this weekend can't understand the energy exchange that happens between us and you, I know we all do our best to give you our undivided attention at the table to feel a part of your life for whatever brief moments we get, but the gratitude that we have for you is limitless, I mean, we talk about it all the time and I'm incredibly grateful for you guys, you, you know, we're at a time in our business right now that the future is a bit uncertain and to be honest it's always uncertain, we're in a job where we don't know how much we'll make in a year typically and sometimes is zero, so for you to come out here to take the time to spend your hard-earned money on something to be quite honest that for most of our careers we gave them give away, you know, because we're grateful as it is, it means the world to us, it does feed our families, it does more than you could imagine, so it's not taken with a grain of salt, it is deeply inside of us how grateful we are for each and every one of you"
"I'll just add to that man, I can't really add much more to that, he's one hundred percent correct and it's just the amounts of just, you guys are just voracious with your love and you believe in us and you and it's just look at this, this is 27 years later and you brought, I mean, the energy is incredible, every time I get somebody in my line from older to younger I'm absolutely amazed and I'm just lucky to be a part of it and I just wanted to say thank you and it's like, you brought us back togheter, we've become like a closer little knit family and that's because of you and now we're all one family so I want to say thank you", Jamie continued
"Yeah, I mean all of that, we don't exist without you guys, there is no art unless it's witnessed, you know when you're doing theater you get a sense of an audience and what they're getting from what you're creating and in film and television you don't get that sense unless you do something like this and when I started doing these I really got a very clear sense of the movies have had and my character has had and how much it can mean to people at a level that you know it's really really hard to comprehend and, you know for me I'm an artist because I want to touch people, I want to communicate, I want to feel you, I want you to feel me, I want to understand, I want to storytell, the world gets closer as we share our stories, we understand each other better, perhaps we can be more peaceful with understanding and, sorry I'm gonna cry", Neve said, "I love you guys"
Hearing and seeing how emotional Neve was, you were quick to hug her and rest your head on her shoulder, while Matthew also rubbed her other arm
"Don't fuck with the original!", someone from the audience exclaimed
"Honestly it's I think you can see why, um, I don't know, it's I think they were special because I think that we care deeply and I don't think that I think it's hard on Hollywood sometimes to show how much you appreciate to because there is this sense of like everything's always perfect for us, that we live in this social media world where you asume our lives are pitch perfect and they're not, we go up and go down, we have complications and I think one of the things about this cast that continually amazes me is that their ability to express honest gratitude and so I have nothing to add other than I'm grateful to be with you guys"
"I feel like I can talk in representation of this whole new generation when I say that we are so grateful for recieving us with open arms and giving us the opportunity to tell the stories of the new characters, you know, entering to a franchise who has been alive for 27 years is scary, not gonna lie, because of the generations of fans and you don't know how they are going to react, but after feeling the warm hug of the fandom once you enter so it's really gratifying and nice to be welcome, and this is something for life because of the people you know while filming, they became your friends, your family, and this is one of the great things about this kind of projects", Jack said
"I feel like they said everything so I'm going to do my best", you joked, "This franchise and fandom are still relevant to this day to you guys, because you keep passing the movies through generations, and demostrate interest and love for this movies through your videos, theories, rankings, edits, fanarts, cosplays, custom toys, tattoos, even fanfics, and more other things were you show your love for this, so I'm pretty sure that this franchise is going to last forever because the love each and everyone of you have for the movies is inconditional, so thank you so much for the love you have for every person that is part of this movies"
"You're my favorite content creator!", someone screamed from the audience
"Thank you", you responded
"Fan Expo Denver show and pass your appreciation one more time for Jamie Kennedy, Skeet Ulrich, Jack Champion, Y/N Ulrich, Matthew Lillard and Neve Campbell!"
Standing from the couches, the six of you along with the cats posed for a few photos with the fans behind before leaving to go back to the signings and other stuff programed for the day
Returning to the autograph tables, both of you shared a table the expo put during the panel where they put photos to give autographs where a line was starting to grow, leaving for a moment to go to the Avatar cosplay meet up before returning and satying there signing autographs during the rest of the day

It’s 3:45pm.
I’m in Chicago.
I’m drinking lemon lime Gatorade from the kitchen.
In a most unwelcome flashback to the winter holidays, I got sick on my long weekend. Dry cough, hoarseness, pectin drops doing nothing to prevent either as the air outside dried out. I took a sick day today to give myself an extra amount of time to recover and adjust my truly fucked sleep schedule.
Moderate fatigue, minor sound sensitivity, no itches or constriction or overheating. No nail chewing or picking. Only mild dysphoria today.
I showered, washed my hair, pinned my hair up. Drove Rocket and Washington to Starbucks to get coffee. I completed two ECE training modules. I sent an email reply to an inquiry on my mentee application. I started a pint of yogurt -- which is currently incubating in our oven. I scanned and printed a copy of the jury summons I got in the mail (so that I can ask for that day off from work). Fed Zoe, gave her her meds. Trimmed one of Washington’s mats (before he promptly ran off, lol).
Things I feel positive about today: resting. Reminding myself that I have value and it’s more than just what I produce for others.

Summary: You’re at Steve and Nancy’s wedding when you are completely blindsided when Corroded Coffin -- and your ex, Eddie Munson -- makes a surprise appearance.
Pairing: Rockstar!Eddie Munson x Reader
Warnings: Drug use, Alcohol use, Eddie being a rockstar, past heartbreak
Word Count: 3154
A/N: Second time writing for Eddie. This is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a bit and has been hanging out in my Drafts so I figured I’d go ahead and put it up. Let me know what you think!
Follows/Likes/Reblogs/Comments are always always always appreciated!
April 25, 1992
Indianapolis was not your idea of a good time, but for Steve and Nancy and all the shit you’d all gone through you would suck it up. They were getting married, you could take a long weekend and make the trek back to your reluctant home state.
What you hadn’t counted on was how fucking fixated everyone was on you coming without a date. Your invitation didn’t have a plus one, so you hadn’t brought one. (Not that you could’ve found one…the Chicago dating scene had not been kind for the last two years.) But every person you’d talked to so far had noticed your lack of date, from Nancy’s mom to Steve’s grandma, even the ring bearer had asked his mom “Why is that lady alone?”
You’d never wanted to slap a child so badly. But you refrained.
So you found yourself outside between cocktail hour and dinner, leaning against the side of the hotel and smoking a cigarette. You’d tried to quit, but then the flashbacks would start or work would get stressful or you wouldn’t have a date to your high school best friend’s wedding.
Just as you lit up your next cigarette, you heard an almighty ruckus coming from inside the hotel ballroom.
“Hello Indiana! We are Corroded Coffin here to celebrate Steve and Nancy’s wedding. Lovebirds, this is for you.”
“No…No fucking way,” you said, stubbing out the cigarette under your heel and heading back inside.
Sure enough, Hawkins’ only claim to fame, Corroded Coffin, was on the diminutive stage set up near the dance floor. Every wedding attendee under the age of thirty-five had flocked to the dance floor and were cheering so loudly you couldn’t hear yourself think.
All you could hear was your blood rushing past your ears. Gareth pounded out a “One, two, one-two-three-four!” and you couldn’t help but remember all those Tuesday nights at The Hideout, cheering on the band and scoring beers with your fake ID.
A server passed by with a tray full of champagne flutes and you grabbed two of them.
Your eyes glanced over each member of the band — Grant had shot up about six inches and slimmed down, Jeff had sick dreadlocks and a wicked gold nose ring, Gareth’s face had lost the boyish quality but you could barely see it behind all the hair. But the band member who caught your attention most was the one you wanted to look at the least.
Eddie Munson, lead singer and guitarist.
The boy who had broken your heart six years ago when he’d dropped you off at your dorm at Columbia College Chicago, then immediately announced that he was continuing west to chase his dream of being a rockstar.
You’d seen him since then, but mostly on magazine covers or posters in record store windows. Corroded Coffin’s rise to fame was fuckin’ astronomical, especially when they leaned into the Grunge sound.
You desperately wanted to pretend you didn’t know every chord, every lyric to the love song they were playing right now. That you didn’t know that it was Track 5 on their third studio album, Freak Flag.
Eddie looked good. He’d chopped his long locks to just above his ears and leaned into his natural curls. The scruff along his jawline was downright unfair and his plain white t-shirt was tighter around his chest and arms than you remembered. And ugh, his smile was so damn genuine and his big brown eyes soaked up all the light shining on him like two perfect black holes. Somehow, he gave off the same shaggy-sexy-chic thing as Kurt Cobain did.
You downed one flute of champagne as you noticed him scanning the crowd, not nearly drunk enough to think he was looking for you.
The love song, “Bed of Roses” ended and Steve and Nancy shared a sweet kiss in the spotlight. Everyone ‘awww’-ed, including you. Then Corroded Coffin launched into their big hit song that you heard every day on the radio, “Crime of the Century” and you couldn’t take it anymore.
You downed the second flute of champagne and made your way toward the door, stopping at your assigned seat to grab your purse and shawl, but when you turned to leave a familiar face stopped you.
“Robin, hey!” you exclaimed.
She furrowed her brow at you and crossed her arms. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“Uhh,” you stammered, “I was going back to my hotel, it’s getting kinda late.”
“It’s not even seven; we haven’t eaten dinner yet. I can’t let you leave.”
“Let me? You okay there, Rob?” you asked.
Jonathan appeared out of nowhere, making you jump out of your skin.
“Steve and Nancy wanted us to keep you here until they’re done,” he explained, nodding toward the band and the cheering crowd.
You shifted your weight and popped out your hip indignantly, “Seriously?”
Robin and Jonathan nodded. Knowing that they took their sacred duty to the newlyweds seriously, you pulled out your chair and sat down. They each sat on either side of you and the three of you made small talk until the band finished their mini-set and let the wedding band take over.
“Shit, he’s coming over,” you said, clenching your fists to hide the shaking in your hands. Luckily he was swarmed the moment he stepped off stage, signing autographs on cloth napkins and pocket squares.
“Just be cool,” Robin said, putting a hand on your shoulder. You shrugged it off and stood up, nearly knocking your chair over.
“Rob, I haven’t seen him in six years! Not since he ditched me and went to live his dream life in LA and broke my damn heart, what the fuck is he doing here?”
“Okay, well, we had this idea…” Robin’s eyes widened to the size of saucers, a dead giveaway that she was lying.
“It was my idea, Em,” Steve interjected, appearing behind Robin.
“Why, Harrington?”
He rolled his eyes, “Oh come on, you haven’t dated anyone since you and I broke up.”
“I’ve dated!”
“It’s been two years since you’ve had anything close to a relationship,” Steve countered.
“And, what, you think the guy who broke my heart and left me to pick up the pieces is how we fix this problem?” You crossed your arms and inclined your head toward where Eddie was chatting with Mike and Dustin, exchanging hugs and smiles.
“Okay, come on,” Steve said, trying to cajole you. Robin and Jonathan exchanged nervous looks as they watched your metaphorical hackles raise.
You stepped closer to him so you didn’t make a scene by shouting at him. “No you come on! Where do you get off manipulating me like this?”
“We’re just concerned about you! All you do is work or sit alone in your apartment which, you know, isn’t the worst thing in the world but you seem really lonely and you have maybe one too many cats to be considered normal-” Steve insisted, putting his hands on your shoulders.
“Well, well well, if it isn’t the old Family Video crew.” Eddie interrupted. You stepped back and away from Steve as he approached. “Steve, congratulations!”
They hugged, Eddie pounding Steve on the back a few times. They broke apart and Eddie greeted Robin and Jonathan, his deep brown eyes finally landing on you.
“You look…incredible,” he said, and you watched him check you out. You thanked your past-self for wearing the dress that made your tits look incredible rather than the one that your friend Macy had helped you pick out.
“You look good yourself, Munson. LA seems to agree with you.” You poked at the elephant in the room, seeing if he would take the bait.
His feet shifted uncomfortably and he rubbed the back of his neck, “We’re on tour actually, just happened to be swinging through-”
“Yeah, you can drop the act, Munson, she knows we invited you,” Steve interrupted him, taking full credit for the bamboozle they’d pulled.
“Gotcha. We are actually on tour, though, we pick up in Vancouver in a few days.”
Robin’s face lit up with excitement, “Touring with Nirvana, right?”
Eddie smiled, “Of course you like Nirvana, Buckley.”
“You’re the one who introduced us to them, right?” Steve said your name and pointedly looked at you. You rolled your eyes.
“Yeah?” His smile turned toward you and you were absolutely not ready for it. Your knees turned to jelly and you looked away.
“Yeah. I did. Excuse me,” you said, making a beeline for the bathroom. Once safely inside, you braced yourself on the counter and let your head drop with a long sigh. Putting one clammy hand over your heart you could feel your racing pulse. You closed your eyes and focused on your breathing, the champagne finally hitting your system and helping to calm your nerves.
Once you were well-settled, you splashed some cool water on your face and neck. You still had dinner to get through. Hopefully the newly wedded couple would be distracted enough to let you slip out before cake. You’d go back to your hotel, crash into the plush bed, and pretend that today had never happened.
You exited the bathroom just in time for the servers to start presenting dishes. Luckily, Eddie was seated a few tables over with the Hellfire crew minus Mike, since he was a groomsman and sat with the wedding party.
Dinner was delicious, and you actually managed to relax a bit in the company of your tablemates.
Robin babbled about how she didn’t mind that Steve was made District Manager of Family Video over her, she liked working at the district office anyway and didn’t involve her driving all over the damn state every week.
Argyle and Eden were expecting their third kid, which is why Eden wasn’t drinking. They showed you pictures of their existing kids — each one with long dark hair and their mom’s bright eyes and their dad’s tawny skin tone.
Jonathan had started dating a model and told you about his recent photography jobs that had taken him out to Los Angeles. Coincidentally, he had been hired to photograph Corroded Coffin for Rolling Stone a few months back.
What fortuitous and suspicious timing, you thought. The puzzle pieces were falling into place.
When the dinner plates had been whisked away, you turned to Argyle, “Hey, Argyle, are you holding?”
He smiled dopily at you, “Holding your heart with my hands, babe.”
“And what would Eden have to say about that?” His wife had excused herself to the bathroom.
He chuckled and shrugged, then reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. He produced a pre-rolled joint and discreetly passed it to you. “Purple palm tree delight for the beautiful lady.”
“Thanks, Argyle.” You slipped him a five dollar bill before slipping out the same door you’d exited earlier.
You lit up and inhaled, almost instantly feeling the effects of the weed. Your body relaxed against the wall and you looked up at the night sky. Only a few more stars were visible here than at home in Chicago.
“Hey there you,” Eddie’s voice interrupted your calm and you scowled at him. He held up his hands in surrender, “Look, I know you have every right to hate me, but just hear me out, ok?”
“You know, I have imagined a million different scenarios like this. What would Eddie say to me if I ever saw him again? I’m curious to see where this goes, so the floor is yours.” You swept your arm in front of you, inviting him to continue. A part of you was indeed curious as to what he had to say in his own defense.
He took a deep breath and started pacing in front of you. “Right, okay, um…I…I’m sorry that I hurt you. I didn’t want to hurt you back then. I hurt me too, and I…fuck, I’m living my dream right now and it all feels wrong.”
You took another hit, “Aren’t there any number of drugs available to you to help with that feeling?”
“Who do I look like, Nicky Sixx?”
You couldn’t help but laugh at that. “No, thank god. I’m glad you avoided becoming a hair metal band. Grunge suits you better.” You offered him the joint and he took it, your fingers brushing momentarily.
“I agree,” he said, taking a hit and exhaling slowly before continuing, “You wanna know why I’m so successful? All I do is work,” another hit, “I get up in the morning, chug coffee, and then I get to work. I don’t party much, I don’t date. I work. I have notebooks full of shit that’ll last me into my eighties. I’m set for the rest of my life career-wise.”
“Well, that’s…good for you. Why are you telling me this?” Maybe the weed and champagne was getting to you because you couldn’t connect the dots. He passed the joint back to you, then rested his back against the wall next to you.
“It’s all empty. Because I don’t have someone in my life who loves me, really loves me. I wake up in my bed all alone, day after day.”
You exhaled the smoke from your nostrils, “Should be an easy fix, you’re a rockstar! Aren’t you drowning in pussy?”
“Nah, I leave all that groupie shit to Jeff and Gareth.” Waving a hand in front of himself as if fending off a horde of horny groupies.
You shrugged, offering him the last hit, “I’m sure there are plenty of girls in LA who aren’t groupies.”
Eddie nodded, “There are, but I need the right person to share it with,” he took the last hit, then tossed the remnants of the joint away, “The person I haven’t been able to get over since I left her at her dorm in Chicago.”
The air left your lungs like you’d been punched in the diaphragm. What? He was…what was he saying? He still wanted you? After all this time? After all that had happened in your life since then? When you were able to take in a breath again, you shook your head to clear your muddled thoughts.
“Eddie, that was six years ago! I’m not the same person I was back then,” you insist.
“I know, but-”
“No, no, you don’t get to do this. You don’t get to blindside me at my ex-boyfriend and dear friend’s wedding six years after you broke my heart! And you’re really standing here telling me that you aren’t reaping the benefits of being a rockstar? I know you did, I saw you!” you accused, jabbing a finger in his direction.
“What?”
You didn’t particularly want to drag up this particular memory, but you had to in order to make your point. With a hand through your hair, you sighed, “December 23rd, 1987. Corroded Coffin’s first album exploded, I had just been broken up with and you guys were playing the House of Blues in LA. I thought I would surprise you for Christmas. I went to the show and…god, you were magnificent up there. I couldn’t keep my eyes off you. That was the moment I realized…you were right to leave. You…you belonged up there and if you had stayed with me in Chicago, you wouldn’t have even gotten the chance.”
“You were there?”
“I even got backstage,” you laughed bitterly.
“You got backstage?”
“You came bouncing off after the encore, buzzing with energy and just…the happiest I’ve ever seen you. And then you bounced right into the arms of some dolled-up bottle blonde wearing little more than a bikini.”
“Oh, shit.”
“Then I knew -- I knew that if I approached you it would all go away and you would lose out on your dream. So I left. And five years later, here you are. Somehow back in my life.”
“You don’t think this will work.”
“You’re a rockstar! The lead singer and guitarist for one of the biggest bands in the world right now, and I’m a dance teacher from Chicago. Our lives are just…too different.”
“You don’t even want to try?”
“I don’t know, Eddie.” You truly didn’t. How could you be together when he was on tour and you had to work? There were phones but you had no idea if you could even afford a call from Minneapolis, let alone Seattle or Shanghai or Budapest. Did he expect you to quit your job and follow him? No way, he knew how much you loved your job.
“Listen to me,” he said your name, gripping your hands in his and locking his big brown eyes onto yours, “I have been in love with you since you snuck ‘Heart of Glass’ onto the first mixtape you made me. I filled notebooks and four albums with songs about how fuckin’ badly I’ve missed you. I’ve been on six international tours, and every time I step on stage I search for you in the crowd and my soul aches when I don’t see you. I know you’ve grown and changed since I last saw you, but I have too. Let me show you what we could have. Please.”
His pleas obliterated the walls around your heart that you had unknowingly built the day he left you at your dorm. Everything he’d done in LA had been about you, for you. He was begging you for another chance and you wanted to hand it to him on a silver platter.
You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer until you rested your head on his shoulder. He smelled like leather and expensive cologne and a small hint of the weed you’d shared. “You’re a lot more eloquent, I’ll give you that.”
He chuckled into your hair, “It’s all the writing. Spent most of ‘87 with my nose in a thesaurus.”
You let your mind wander a bit, imagining him strumming a guitar with a pencil behind his ear or clutched in his teeth, scribbling down chord progressions or lyrics or doodling in the margins.
You leaned back to look him in the face, knowing your answer. You’d known it since he’d approached you that night. You were ready to give it a go, for real, like adults this time.
“So how do you propose we do this?”
Eddie ducked his head, brown curls brushing against your nose, hiding his beaming smile. “I have to be in Vancouver on Wednesday. When are you going back to Chicago?”
“I have to check out of my hotel tomorrow by 11, but the wedding party is having brunch at 10:30.”
“I’ll pick you up after? Drive you home?”
“Yeah, okay.”
“Can I kiss you?”
“You fucking better.”
The kiss was absolutely electric. Six years of pent-up emotion releasing the moment your warm lips met. And in that moment you knew that this was the last first kiss you’d ever have.

Release date: October 10th, 1952.
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: comedy
Director: Richard Sale
Producer: Robert Bassler
Actors: Anne Baxter, Macdonald Carey, Cecil Kellaway
Plot Summary: Virginia and her husband George are flying to Hawaii. While in the air, the engine catches fire, and a terrifying emergency landing is attempted. Believing they are about to die, George confesses that he had a night he regretted with her best friend when she was out of town. Virginia tries to deal with it in the worst possible ways, with comedic (?) results.
My Rating (out of five stars): ** ½
Jeepers, this film had a lot of issues. (Hey, am I kinda talking 1952-ish?) The concept described to me was that this was a fantasy comedy, where Virginia imagines she is punishing George by taking on the guise of different famous women in history. That sounded cute. That’s not what it was. It was a disjointed film based on a popular “comedic” set up of the era- “What would a woman do if she thought her husband was unfaithful, but she’s just being ridiculous?” Ha! Ha! Worrying about infidelity is so funny! (But only when women are the worried ones! When men are worried, it’s a drama, of course!)
The Good:
Anne Baxter. I will forever love Anne Baxter for being in All About Eve. She could have made no other films, and she would still be a legend to me just for playing Eve. I can’t say I loved her in this movie, though. I mostly just liked her because I like her.
Aunt Bea! Frances Bavier, the actress who played Aunt Bea on the Andy Griffith Show was Baxter’s mom in this.
The Cleopatra fantasy flashback. The funniest fantasy woman Virginia imagined herself to be was Cleopatra. And Baxter looked very yummy in her costume! I didn’t know she had a body like that! I'd pay to see her as Cleopatra in a full length film any day.
Jane, the titular best friend. I thought she was an interesting and funny character. She’s the fast talking, sharp tongued, sardonic type that breathes life into a movie.
The Bad:
The premise. The idea of making a comedy film about a wife who believes her husband cheated on her with her best friend is... a choice. It reflects the way so many films and TV shows of this era viewed male infidelity- "It's not that big of a deal, right? As long as he loves you and he’s sorry, you should forgive him! He’s a man, so this kind of thing is just to be expected!" ... It’s gross. Thankfully that cultural view has changed quite a bit.
The shiftiness with what did actually happen between George and Jane. We don’t find out until the very end of the film what really happened. George always denies anything happened, but Jane remembers it too, and it was three years ago. So something happened! From what I gather at the end, George was feeling lonely when Virginia was out of town. Jane came over, they started drinking, and they both seemed to have the intention of cheating... but George drank too much and just barfed and passed out. Knowing this sooner would have made the movie funnier, that’s for sure, but then it would have screwed up the “surprise” for the ending. It was just bad in any scenario.
The Middle Eastern fantasy. Virginia imagines she’s a veiled woman in the dessert, acting like George’s slave wife. The whole thing was more offensive than funny.
Virginia and Nick. In the later part of the movie Virginia flirts shamelessly with one of her husband's clients, spends all night out alone with him, and then packs her bags to go to Chicago with him for the weekend. George is furious, as he has every right to be, and he walks out on her. ...Funny? The whole thing was just sad.
Sometimes the movie seemed like it was trying to be a wacky sitcom, and it just didn’t work.
Virginia and George’s marriage didn’t seem very healthy even before all the plot trouble started. She belittled him for having boring interests and for his lack of intellect or cultural sophistication. They never seemed especially happy.
The structure. The different vignettes were abrupt in their changes and disjointed in general.
It just wasn’t very funny. If you go into this expecting a laugh riot, you’ll be disappointed.

Flashback Flyer Friday #FFF
In 1999, ENMORTEM performed 3 live shows in 2 days at 2 different venues during "the ever-changing" Memorial Day Weekend Massacre in Chicago. The line-up continued to morph leading up to the event, as bands dropped out and different ones were added. On Friday night May 28th, ENMORTEM kicked off the festival at Uncle Snorkys along with VEHEMENT, DISINTER and CIANIDE. The next day on the 29th, ENMORTEM performed both an earlier all ages show and a later 21 & over show at Smiler Coogans. Details are foggy on who else actually performed during day #2 of the fest, as chaos reigned for 2 days over Memorial Day Weekend in Chicago, 1999.
