Victor: 2010 Chevy Volt
Tumblr media
Sometimes a really good deal comes about and you just can’t pass it up. Such is the case with this 195,000 mile 2010 Chevrolet Volt first generation. Ultimately this vehicle would get refreshed and sold to a good friend of mine to replace a 2006 Kia minivan.
Service Stats
In Service Date: 2/6/2022 In Service Mileage: 195,455 Out of Service Date: 6/19/2022 Out of Service Mileage: 201,200 Service Life: 5 months,  5,745 miles
The History & Story
Tumblr media
This car was owned by my friend Tyler in Chattanooga. He replaced it with a 2017 Chevy Bolt EV, and offered it to me for the incredibly low price of $1500. My intention was to fix the car up so it’d pass NC inspection (it had a MIL) and sell it to a friend of mine. Getting this thing fixed up was going to break me of ever touching anything with an internal combustion engine again.
Tyler was up front about the MIL, the non functional parking sensors, the body damage, cracked/leaking tail light, and the crack in the windshield. This car had been pretty much abused its whole life -- Tyler was the 4th or 5th owner, and he said the guy he bought it off of (something like 4 or 5 years ago) had never once plugged it in to charge. Despite that, if driven conservatively without climate control, you could pull 32 miles out of the originally rated 36 mile battery. Even to this day the car is able to make the drive from its new home in Durham to my home in Raleigh on just battery power.
Tumblr media
So what all was triggering the MIL? Well, we had the P0CE0 code - which meant one of the coolant pumps was acting up, We also had a P0420 - catalyst below threshold (possible bad catalytic converter), codes for misfires, and a few other things. I called a local shop that specializes in hybrids and they agreed to look at it. Ultimately they said they weren’t comfortable working on the Chevy hybrid system and that if I could resolve the battery-related code (P0CE0) that they could work on the traditional engine-related stuff. Ok, off the Sir Walter Chevrolet we go...
I dropped the car off and had Brad drive me home on his lunch break (he worked for Team PowerSports down the street at the time). They told me it needed a catalytic converter, a battery cooling pump, they recommended spark plugs and a transmission fluid change. I approved replacing the coolant pump and nothing else, because they had a near $3000 repair order and I had a feeling that the catalytic converter wasn’t gone on this car. Sir Walter replaced the pump -- or so we thought -- for over $1000 cost and I then took it back to Torque to have the spark plugs replaced, transmission fluid changed, and to check the exhaust system and tell me if the car really needed a new catalytic converter.
Wouldn’t you know that my hunch paid off? The secondary air injection pump was leaking, if this pump malfunctions the system can’t properly check the catalytic converter’s exhaust to ensure it is meeting the targets. The SAI pump is integrated into the valve cover of the car and wasn’t an expensive part. They had to remove the valve cover anyway to do the spark plugs, so that saved a little labor costs. $900 later, the car is back with a warning. They drove it 30 miles but they can’t get the readiness to set -- the MIL is off, but it won’t pass inspection until the readiness registers are all set.
What are readiness registers, you ask? Your vehicle has 7 checks that must have a passed value in order to pass an OBD inspection. It turns out that the Volt requires a number of different driving cycles in order to set the registers. Driving it for 30 miles on the highway simple won’t set them, unlike most other internal combustion vehicles. I read a post about someone who had over 60,000 miles on their Volt and moved to a new state that required an emission inspection and he had to drive the car with a depleted battery for two days to set the registers. Apparently it needs to see low speed cold driving, highway driving at least 60mph, and a slew of other scenarios -- thankfully this was all well laid out by a forum post.
Tumblr media
So over the next few days I drove the car in all the conditions and got the registers to set, except the MIL came back on for P0CE0 -- the HV Battery Cooling Pump. What the hell. So I call Sir Walter and I get the service manager and try to explain the situation, he cuts me off and says that they refuse to service this or any other vehicles that I own and I’m free to take it elsewhere. Apparently being called out for missing a leaking air pump during the 150-point inspection was triggering. I told him if he refused to correct this repair, which carries a year or 12,000 miles of warranty, I would be forced to dispute the charge with my credit card company. He said you’re welcome to do that and hung up on me. Needless to say, I will never patronize nor recommend anyone patronize Sir Walter Chevrolet of Raleigh.
I opened a dispute with Chase and they said they needed a second opinion on the repair. I was advised to take it to another dealership and have them evaluate if the pump in question was replaced. Off to Capital Chevrolet in Wake Forest. These folks were super, super nice and their shop is much cleaner and nicer than Sir Walter’s. I told the service advisor everything that was going on and what I needed, she said no problem we will get the Volt tech to check it out and call you. The next day, or perhaps the day after, I got a call with some fascinating news.
Sir Walter did replace a coolant pump - but they replaced the wrong one. The pump they replaced has two hose connections, the one they should have replaced has three. The best part? The part numbers for these two pumps are one sequential digit apart. Someone likely mistypes 8 instead of 9 and volia...the wrong part is ordered. They confirmed that the pump that circulates the coolant into the cabin heater was the pump replaced, and that the code stored in the ECU was for the battery circulation pump. They quoted me $800 to replace it -- turns out the part is $32 online and it’s mounted right on the passenger side firewall, immediately visible when you open the hood.
I declined the repairs, paid for the diagnostic and requested that they state in the RO that the wrong pump was replaced. They did as I asked, and they had charged the car for me before I picked it up. Super good experience, I will be back if I ever buy a Chevy again. So, now I have the evidence needed to win my dispute with Chase. It took a few weeks, but I did win the dispute and the $1000+ repair charge was refunded. But, we still have a bad pump to contend with...
The other issues this car had were minor. The passenger tail lamp and the reverse lamp needed to be replaced. I managed to score both parts on ebay for cheap, and paid my neighbor to install them for me at his body shop. So long as we could get the MIL to turn off, we could get the car inspected with a new owner (side note: out of state vehicles registered in NC have one year to become inspection compliant upon initial registration). Talking with Tyler, he said that the MIL would go off in the summer but always came back in the winter. He never cared since TN didn’t require an emission inspection.
I tried everything to reprogram the pump, and was about to pull the trigger on a new one when the MIL went out on its own one day. I decided that it was best to sell the car in June/July so that the P0CE0 would self-clear because apparently the pump doesn’t throw the code when it’s warm out (which is weird, but, whatever). So the plan was now to wait and see if the MIL would go out on its own, and if so to get it inspected with the next owner.
Meanwhile, as all this is going on, my tenant’s vehicle died on him. He’d quit his job and was doing DoorDash/Uber Eats/gig work and was in a panic. We lent him the car and he actually drove it past 200,000 miles - he put roughly 3,000 miles on it in less than two months. I didn’t want to hang on to this car forever, so I knew I needed to come up with a plan to enable me to sell it.
Tumblr media
I sold the car to my pottery friend Brandon. Brandon already had a MATE ebike, and was fully sold on the idea of an electric car. He had an old, beat up 2006 Kia Sedona minivan that we managed to sell for $800. He agreed to pay the full amount we had in the car (about $2800), and he even had an exterior 120v outlet at his rental house to charge the car with. He got the vehicle titled in his name with a 10-day temporary tag and we took it over to the Volvo dealership by our house for an inspection. There was a moment of panic as the MIL lit up momentarily once it was pulled into the bay, but it went out after a few ignition cycles. Fortunately, it passed inspection and was given a permeant tag.
Tumblr media
Brandon is very happy with the car. I think the fuel that was in the car when I sold it to him lasted him almost 4 months before he had to refill the car. He uses it in EV mode almost 100% of the time. The MIL is back on, and if it doesn’t go off when it’s time to renew his plate then we may end up replacing that pump -- I found a radiator shop that seemed open to installing the part after they did some quick research on the car.
So why did this break me from ever owning another internal combustion engine vehicle? I got really dirty just opening the hood on this thing. That valve cover/Air Injection Pump leak sprayed oil all over the place. The catalytic converter situation was annoying. In short, I’d rather not deal with any of that crap ever again. I’ll swap a battery, I’d probably find it entertaining to replace a module in a battery pack... but I don’t want to contend with engine oil ever again.

Chevy volt range 2012
Tumblr media
#CHEVY VOLT RANGE 2012 DRIVER#
#CHEVY VOLT RANGE 2012 FULL#
He could tell us everything we needed to know about the Chevy Equinox or the Malibu in under 10 minutes. Why deter us from buying a car we knew we wanted? This puzzled me for months, but eventually, I figured it out: for a salesperson (commissioned or not), time is money. There was another big hitch with the Volt: the way they were sold When we arrived, the first thing our salesperson tried to do after we told him we wanted to test it out was. When my wife and I were planning to buy one, we started at our local Chevrolet dealer, which had several on the lot. It’s been rumored for more than a year that Chevrolet is working on a plug-in crossover replacement for the Volt, which is more in line with market trends than a four-seater sedan.īut there was one other big hitch with the Volt: the way they were sold. Most major carmakers have released plug-in hybrids like the Volt (or soon will), showing what a trailblazer it really was.
#CHEVY VOLT RANGE 2012 FULL#
Earlier this year, Ford said it would be discontinuing most of its car lineup in favor of trucks and crossovers, and GM is doing something similar.īut my experience with the Volt convinced me that plug-in hybrids are the major stepping stone for owners between traditional gas-powered cars and full EVs like the Tesla Model 3.
#CHEVY VOLT RANGE 2012 DRIVER#
This is probably the primary driver of the Volt’s cancellation. So why kill it? The Volt is a sedan, and demand for four-door cars has been falling marketwide. But even if the range had been shorter, the Volt’s hybrid status eliminates that electric car range anxiety because she could have stopped at a gas station in a pinch. The rated range of 53 miles for a full charge of electricity held up, allowing my wife to drive her 50-mile round trip commute entirely on electricity. But with some minor behavior changes - like plugging it in at night to charge up the battery - you can save money and the environment. If you like, you can drive it like a normal car and never plug it in at all. And, unlike full-electric vehicles, it’s easy to loan to people who are unfamiliar with the quirks of electric cars. Unlike Teslas, which run on electricity alone, the Volt is a “plug-in hybrid” that has a smaller battery pack, but it also packs a gasoline engine that starts up when the battery runs out of juice. We hardly noticed the switchover between electric and gasoline propulsion. The technology in the car is astonishing. I bought a second-generation Volt in 2016, and before it was totaled in a crash (there were no serious injuries), my then-wife and I put more than 18,000 all-electric miles on the car, with just shy of 2,000 gasoline miles on the clock. For the Volt, which received so much attention when it launched, it’s natural that its boosters would claim every sale as a victory, while nothing would satisfy those who think of it as a “ Government Motors” boondoggle. Deliveries eventually grew to more than 20,000 units per year in both 20, putting the Volt on par with what Porsche has predicted for sales of its upcoming Taycan electric car. In 2011, its sales goal was 10,000, but Chevy only sold 7,671. Though the Volt’s sales numbers fell short of the original projections, it was hardly a failure. In 2012, President Obama promised to buy one when he left office, and talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh repeatedly bashed both Obama and GM for the Volt, saying that “nobody wants it” and criticizing the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. The Volt has always been a political football. The Volt is sentenced to death in March 2019

Fun times dealing with the equestrian center’s radio net. For the director of the equestrian center - who is here on a work visa, doesn’t have a car, and uses one from the equestrian center to take home - they just a few days ago retired a 1985 Chevrolet Chevette she had been using previously, and replaced it with a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic transferred over from one of my employer’s other companies. The Chevette did not have a radio installed in it, but they decided that the Sonic does need one. I don’t know if you’ve ever looked at the interior of a Sonic, but there really isn’t space for any sort of add ons in the interior. It could be installed on the center console on the passenger side and leave room to open the glove compartment, but I really don’t like the idea of having her look way down and to the right to see the radio if she has to switch channels and such, especially as she’s not a particularly fantastic driver to begin with. Even though we sell radios to the equestrian center at a much lower cost than we would for commercial customers, the owner of the equestrian center rejected that idea on cost, as she already knows she can buy TK-860 or TK-880 radios from us for substantially less. So, it looks like it’s going to be a Kenwood TK-880 (mobile radio to the left) mounted on the dash. Which, I don’t like doing dash mounts because I think it looks sloppy and I like my work to be professional, but it’s ultimately her call.
Honestly, I never saw any need to install a radio in her car... even the company which used it previously never saw a need to. So the owner says, “Well, she might drive it to events”. But never has she (the director) ever shown any interest in driving herself to those... if they’re taking the bus, she much prefers that, as she pretty much has a work center there which was made by taking some seats out of the bus and installing a small desk. Otherwise, she’d ride with someone else, even when given the opportunity to take a newer vehicle, and even when offered someone to act as her personal driver. She’s not into driving, and she’s not going to be now. But I lost that argument.
The equestrian center uses an organizational GMRS license which they had originally obtained in 1984 and have maintained since; thus, it was grandfathered in when the FCC stopped issuing organizational licenses in 1987. Originally, they had used the Motorola MR-355R (bottom left) and MR-356R blister pack radios. Problem is, they were buying these things at whatever big box retailers everyone else was buying them at, so we ended up with hordes of unlicensed users getting on the equestrian center repeater (there’s also a sorry saga of how GMRS users were screwed out of exclusivity on Channels 15 - 22 on account of squatters who bought the 22 channel “hybrid” radios en masse and completely ignored the blurb on the packaging which stated use of those channels required a GMRS license).
When I was given charge of the equestrian center’s radio net, I changed a lot of things. First, I limited who accessed the repeater. Crew and barn leads, admin staff, etc. Everyone working under the leads could use simplex, as they were never a far enough distance from each other to require a repeater. So, we were initially going to use BaoFeng BF-888S radios for the crew members who weren’t accessing the repeater, but we had difficulty finding a seller who could guarantee the radios they sold us had the FCC ID on them (a legal requirement in the US for operating transmitting on any service outside of Part 97 rules). We found one who could guarantee it if we bought the BaoFeng GT-1 (second from the left on the bottom row), which is internally the same as the BF-888S, but uses a different battery and case. For the crew leads, barn leads, admin staff, and those who were going to access the repeater, we went with the B-Tech (BaoFeng) UV-82C (not pictured), which is a commercial Part 90 type accepted variant of the UV-82 series radios. The dual watch feature also allows them to monitor both the repeater and their internal crew simplex net simultaneously without having to go into scan mode.
As the blister pack radios used a standardized list of CTCSS and DCS tones, I changed the repeater to split tones, with separate DCS tones for the transmit and receive side, and also used a mixture of non-standard and inverted DCS tones throughout the entire equestrian center net. So while someone running a police scanner or radio on carrier squelch can still hear our traffic, they won’t be able to talk to us or interrupt us with the blister pack radios, Midland radios, etc., as we had problems both with people intentionally getting on our repeater and also those running simplex who “coincidentally” used the same frequencies and DPL tones which we did. Once the FCC co-banded all of the FRS simplex and GMRS frequencies in 2017, we were left powerless to do anything about it (not that we really could before... the FCC was always pretty lax on their enforcement when it came to GMRS). If we run into a matter of getting disrupted by someone who successfully finds our DPL tones, then I have the means to require the radio’s PTT-ID to be on an approved list to trip the repeater.
For the riding instructors, we felt that perhaps something more durable was in order after one of the GT-1s broke. Initially, I took of the Motorola HT750s (second from the right on the bottom row) from the rental side of our business and loaned them to the equestrian center until we could figure out something more permanent. The permanent solution came when I happened across some Kenwood TK-350s (center of the bottom row) which were sitting in a bin and pretty much unwanted. So, after finding batteries for them, I was allowed to take those and donate them to the equestrian center. I actually had to lean how to use DOS in order to program them. Surprisingly, only one ended up preferring the HT750 over the Kenwoods. In the end - since she rents a room from and lives with me - I purchased one at cost from the business and donated it so that she could continue using one.
All the way to the right on the bottom row is one of my Kenwood TK-3180s, which I use both for the equestrian center’s GMRS net as well as the LMR radio net at my regular job. I was using one with the 16 key DTMF keypad (and the Tactical Features Set), but the owner of the equestrian center wants all radios labeled... while crew radios will tyically have only a number, the equestrian instructors wanted their names to be displayed on the radios they were issued, and I was instructed to do the same with mine. The running joke with it is, when we’re doing fundraising events (the equestrian program is a registered nonprofit), tours of the equestrian center, or other events, then husbands can try claiming they were only looking at the nametags on the radio to try remembering our names when their wives catch them staring at our asses. Since the DTMF keypad didn’t leave space for a label, I took one with the four button keypad and used that.
GMRS is regulated under Part 95E and requires a Part 95E radio. However, due to a lack of viable Part 95E radio options, many users have taken to using Part 90 LMR radios, as many of the UHF models cover GMRS frequencies. For example, the Motorola HT750 can be programmed with frequencies from 403  -470 MHz, and GMRS (as well as FRS) is a collection of 22 frequencies in the 462 and 467 MHz range. The use of Part 90 radios in GMRS plays fast and loose with the law, but acts in the spirit of the law, even if not the letter of it. The FCC has acknowledged the practice and has been leaving it alone, but they haven’t actually given approval to do that. To that end, we ensure that all radios are Part 90 (or Part 95E, as some employees have bought their own radios).
Which of course brings us to other problems in dealing with the radio net. A number of licensed GMRS users are quite upset about our use of a repeater on GMRS, especially given a lack of viable ones in the area. Some have identified the tower and have threatened to report us to the FCC (to which we tell them to go right ahead, as our use of that frequency is 100% on the up and up), some have tried to get us to make it a public use repeater (and typically suggest we use travel tone).
Then, of course, a number of the male employees - not content with the little GT-1 radios - always want something more “badass”. So I had one come up to me asking me if I could program his radio to the equestrian center net, and he hands me a BaoFeng UV-5R and told me the equestrian center owner gave her approval. Problem is, the FCC ID on that one - 2AJGM-UV5R - only shows Part 15 certification for 134 - 174 MHz and 400 - 470 MHz. So, outside of Part 97 (ham radio) use, it’s only legal as a receiver and scanner in those band splits. The ones which don’t have an FCC ID aren’t even legal for that. Had another one come to me with what looked like a Kenwood TK-3207... great 16 channel UHF radio, and the TK-2000/3000 series are becoming one of the mainstays of our rental service. When I removed the battery, it showed the model as TK-3000, but there was no FCC ID on it, so I asked him where he’d gotten it from. He said his brother used it for his business and had some extras. Just out of curiosity, I tried programming it with the KPG-137D programming software and was unable to. So I asked the brother where he’d gotten it from. He said he bought it off of Ebay. When I searched Ebay, I found a bunch of TK-2000/TK-3000 series radios from a seller out of China. So I installed KPG-137D on another computer and this time used the serial number for the UK/European version, and it successfully programmed the radio. All fine and dandy, but I gave it back to him and told him it’s not a legal radio for use in the US without an FCC ID being present.
I swear, I wear too many hats sometimes.

Motors in Electric Vehicle
Due to worse effect of fossil fuel on environment, Electric vehicle (EV) was introduced. The core element of the EV, apart from Batteries, which replaces the Internal Combustion engines is an Electric motor. Older designs used standard DC motors, which are relatively economically controlled when driven with batteries. New designs use either AC Induction motors or Permanent Magnet Rotor AC motors, driven by electronic inverters. In general, lower power applications will use the PM AC motors which are slightly more efficient for a given task, while high-performance vehicles will use induction motors since they are capable of very large acceleration torques relative to their weight for short intervals, until they overheat. All new Electric Vehicles and even hybrids use AC electric motors. They are lighter, more powerful and can be used as a generator makes power as you slow down or brake called Regenerative braking.
Permanent Magnet AC Motor
Permanent magnet AC motors (PMAC) are just like standard induction AC motors except they have permanent, rare-earth magnets attached to their rotors. Having these permanent magnets instead of electromagnets reduces energy losses in the motor. They are also called synchronous AC motors.  Most of the automotive manufacturers use PMAC motors for their hybrid and electric vehicles. For example, Toyota Prius, Chevrolet Bolt EV, Ford Focus Electric, zero motorcycles S/SR, Nissan Leaf, Hinda Accord, BMW i3, etc use PMAC motor for propulsion.
Tumblr media
AC Induction Motors
Induction motor works on the principle of induction where electro-magnetic field is induced into the rotor when rotating magnetic field of stator cuts the stationary rotor. Induction machines are by far the most common type of motor used in industrial, commercial or residential settings. Squirrel cage induction motors have a long life due to less maintenance. Induction motors can be designed up to an efficiency of 92-95%. The drawback of an induction motor is that it requires complex inverter circuit and control of the motor is difficult.
Tumblr media
Typically, most of the manufacturers use synchronous motors, but whether it is a permanent magnet or electromagnet strongly influences the performance. The key difference is that AC induction motors have to use electricity to generate the magnetic currents inside the motor, which cause the rotor to spin, whereas a permanent magnet motor doesn’t require that additional current since its magnets—created from rare-earth materials—are always “on.”

Are Electric Vehicles Ready for Prime Time?
Okay, so that you are prepared to do your part to reduce fossil gas usage and you're thinking about an EV (Electric Vehicle). Several manufactures are marketing EV's, however which one is proper for you? Everyone has one of a kind riding styles and needs. How some distance can you cross on a 100% EV? How dependable are they? Are there any savings? Some of these questions could be spoke back beneath to help you decide if this technology is ready for you.
There are three styles of EV's to be had. But, are they equipped for top time? You decide.
Dedicated EV- Electric best Extended EV Electric with fuel engine Plug-in hybrids Dedicated EV is an electric powered best car. There are four fashions to be had or predicted out by way of 2012.
Nissan Leaf is a four-door 5-passenger hatch back pure battery electric powered automobile. It has an predicted range of 100 miles among prices, which Nissan says is enough for 90% of Americans. It takes 8 hours or greater to absolutely rate with a 220-volt outlet and longer with a a hundred and ten-volt outlet. The beginning rate is expected at $33,600. The warranty on the battery and associated hardware is 8 years or 100,000 miles. The envisioned cost to update the battery is $18,000. Expected availability is December 2010. Mini E Cooper is a two-door two-passenger natural battery electric powered vehicle. It has an expected variety of 156 miles underneath perfect conditions. Most drivers get approximately 100 miles between charges. It takes approximately 3 hours to fee with a 240 volt forty eight Amp outlet or 4.5 hours with a 32-amp outlet. If using a a hundred and ten volt 12 amp outlet it takes approximately 26.Five hours to charge. This is a -passenger car due to the fact the battery takes up the whole lower back seat. The regenerative braking takes a little being used to, the gadget kicks in as soon as the driving force lifts his foot off the accelerator pedal. This causes the automobile to start slowing before the brake pedal is carried out. BMW is leasing those automobiles as a part of a unique program. They are developing a replacement primarily based at the BMW 1 Series, which is due out in 2011. Ford Focus EV is a four-door sedan based on the redesigned 2012 Focus. The prototypes have a 23-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery % with an envisioned variety of 100 miles. Charge time is approximately 6 hours on a 220-volt charger. Tesla Roadster first started promoting in 2008. It has a price tag of $111,000, it's far a two-seater sports activities vehicle. It is based totally on the Lotus Elise with a fiberglass body. This car is a rocket, it may accelerate from zero to 60 in beneath four seconds. It has various 245 miles with a large fifty three-kilowatt-hour battery %. Full fee takes 3.Five hours on a proprietary 240-Volt 70 amp charger. It has a totally stiff and jarring experience with a totally fundamental indoors. It is awkward climbing into the cockpit due to the tall extensive sill. The loud battery-cooling fans emit a consistent roar in the back of you. Tesla is developing a lower cost $50,000+ version S sedan expected to be launched in 2012. Extended EV electric with fuel engine
The Chevrolet Volt is the simplest model that falls within this class. It is a four-door four-passenger sedan. The Volt does no longer have a rear bench seat like most vehicles because of the T shaped battery percent. It has quite a number forty miles on electric energy. GM states this is sufficient for 75% of commuters. Once the battery stage drops beneath a certain stage, a small gasoline engine kicks in to offer sufficient electric powered energy to run the electrical motor. The normal range is 300 miles earlier than filling the gasoline tank or charging the batteries. GM says the Volt can run with never being plugged in. However, it'll effect the gasoline financial system. Charge time for the Volt is four hours on 220 volt or 8 to ten hours on 110-volt shops. The Volt fees quicker than the committed electric powered vehicles because it has a smaller battery. The battery guarantee for the Volt is similar to the Nissan leaf. The guarantee on the battery and associated hardware is eight years or a hundred,000 miles. The beginning rate for the Volt is $41,000. The alternative price of the Lithium-ion battery is about $8000, that's $10,000 less than the Leaf. The electric motor Entergy produces 149 horse strength and 273 pound-ft of torque. Those torque numbers are approximately the same as a V-6 engine.
Plug-in Hybrids
There aren't any manufactures producing plug-in Hybrids as of this writing. However, there are some aftermarket groups generating aftermarket add on batteries for the Toyota Prius. The more price of these add on batteries is about $11,000. This delivered battery boosts the gasoline mileage by about 50% for the primary 35 miles. Once the battery is depleted, the Prius reverts again to its ordinary hybrid operation at which time the fuel economic system drops barely below that of a preferred Prius because of the delivered battery weight. Toyota is subject-checking out the plug-in Prius for commercial use. There are no anticipated models for retail customers till 2012.

What is a hybrid car?
Tumblr media
A hybrid uses an electric motor and gas engine to power a car. To recapture power, regenerative braking is used. As the electric motor can power a hybrid car on its own, the gas engine does the same thing. They can also work together to power a hybrid car. Since less gas will be consumed, you won’t be spending as much on fuel. Since electric power can be added, it will help the hybrid car to perform better.
Even though a hybrid car has a battery, electricity requires another battery of high voltage. For battery maintenance, gas engines are used in hybrid cars. From using less fuel to setting a cheap vehicle price, hybrid designs are used to bring a lot of improvements. You will only spend more when you want to replace damaged parts. To keep your hybrid car in good condition, you have to replace the windscreen immediately if it gets damaged. The different types of hybrid cars are listed below
Parallel hybrid
In recent designs, gas engines are used together with electric motors. Since they are connected, the two sources of power combine. As it can be a manual transmission, it can also be an automatic transmission. Power-split CVT is one of the most commonly used hybrid transmissions. As it can be found in Toyota Prius, it can also be found in Chevrolet Volt.
Transmission type plays a big role in determining the acceleration and feel of parallel hybrid cars. The gas engine size also matters a lot. A lot of popular brands employ the use of parallel hybrid design. Some of them are Toyota, Hyundai and Honda.
Plug-In hybrid
Plug-in hybrids are used to improve hybrids with a better battery. Just like electric cars, a plug-in hybrid can be charged with electricity. It can be at home, a charging station, or any other place with a good source of electricity.
The storage in a plug-in hybrid can store a lot of energy at once. If you can manage to charge every night, you can run with a plug-in hybrid all day. You won’t have to spend on fuel anymore. Your expenses will only be on repairing damaged windscreen or any other vital hybrid car part. One of the most popular plug-in hybrids is the Chrysler Pacifica.
Series hybrid
The electric motor gives the thrust that the series hybrid needs. No form of mechanical connection exists between the wheels and the other part. The only thing the gasoline engine does is charge the battery when it is low. As a result, the driving experience of a series hybrid is similar to that of an electric car. The series hybrid has a powerful acceleration. BMW i3 is a great example.

DC Battery Hub utilizes technology created by Dr. Mark Quarto of QTS, LLC. and is distributed by FutureTech, a vehicle electrification technology solutions provider. Rather than boasting a “proprietary” process, the DC Battery Hub approach to rebuilding Hybrid Electric Vehicle battery packs is independently standardized with careful attention to detail and validated for efficacy.
Every “donor” battery pack received by DC Battery Hub is thoroughly inspected for its quality, cleaned, and prepared for rebuilding. The battery is then cycled, analyzed, and screened; it is taken precisely to its lowest healthy state of charge, recharged to the highest capacity, and then re-balanced to the original state-of-charge specs. Only the best of the best cells are maintained; the rest are properly recycled. Once enough high-quality conditioned cells are available, they are reinstalled into the hybrid battery chassis and evenly balanced to achieve an equal state of charge among all cells. The final battery product is then shipped out for use.
DC Battery Hub batteries are assembled with hand-selected components, screened for health before they are conditioned, balanced, and brought back to optimum efficiency. Every DC battery is remanufactured to OE specifications and is guaranteed for quality and reliability. In short, DC batteries make green cars greener! Properly rebuilt and conditioned hybrid batteries are known to reduce waste and, therefore, reduce the need for factory-new replacements in hybrid electric vehicles.

Excerpt:
As a wave of electric vehicles quickly approaches, experts say, it could wash away a large portion of a skilled labor group that has been around for decades — the neighborhood auto mechanic.
The reason is simple: Unlike gas-powered engines, electric engines don’t require oil changes, have far fewer moving parts and rarely break down, eliminating much of the maintenance that repair shops rely on. The latest electric vehicles can be serviced using parts purchased online or fixed remotely through over-the-air updates.
The U.S. auto repair industry employs about 750,000 workers, nearly four times the number of people employed by the coal-mining industry. Though they are increasingly skilled and tech-savvy, many experts say, they are not prepared for the end of gas-powered transportation.
Unlike gasoline cars, electric vehicles require no traditional oil changes, fuel filters, spark plug replacements or emission checks. In most cases, you can wave goodbye to changing timing belts, differential fluid and transmission fluid. EV brake pad replacements are less frequent because regenerative braking returns energy to the battery, significantly reducing wear on mechanical brakes because they’re used less to slow the vehicle.
Analysts estimate that the repair bills for EVs would be lower and less frequent than the tabs of their gas-guzzling counterparts.
The Chevy Bolt’s maintenance schedule requires owners to rotate tires every 7,500 miles, replace the cabin air filter every 22,500 miles and have the coolant flushed every 150,000, according to Chevrolet. “And . . . yeah, that’s it,” as one writer recently mused. Some of those parts can be purchased online for less than $20.
Van Batenburg said that during the seven years he’s owned a Nissan Leaf, the car has required about one hour’s worth of maintenance total, which he performed himself. His maintenance costs, however extraordinary sounding, aren’t unusual, according to a random sampling of EV owners.
The auto technician of the future will need to become some combination of your company’s IT support guy with a car-lover’s mind, someone with the ability to change tires and operate diagnostic and scanning equipment to root out problems involving computer networks and data processing.
Even for repair shops on the cutting edge — often in urban areas where hybrid cars are already commonplace — survival may not be a matter of willingness to adapt, but by how quickly a business can reasonably do so. Though he doesn’t foresee his industry being wiped out by electric cars, Moss said he expects electric technology to arrive much faster than most analysts predict. “Technology compresses time,” he likes to say, which is why he thinks people should be worried about 2025 — not 2040.

Mahindra has by now created the electric powertrain, which it has been making use of to the e-Verito and the e2OPlus. This tends to get related powertrain pack, but there may very well be some tweaks in it. Chevrolet Volt is undoubtedly an electric motor vehicle that may be able of creating its very own electricity. When it really is billed completely, it is able to operate on electric demand for nearly A variety of 40 miles i. The price of this automotive is may be twenty lakhs. BMW i3 electrical could be a very hot electric expected being released while in the Republic of India just before long. The BMW i3 electrical will probably be priced Rs. twenty lakh within the salesroom. In January 2016, India’s EV progress programme bought a shot within the arm after three of India largest auto-makers signed a pact to produce parts for an all-electric hybrid auto This switchover brings about drastic gasoline conserving, Even though battery replacement is a major disadvantage for electric cars. Electric car debuted inside the Indian current market in early 2000s, when Maini Team introduced Reva, which introduced the concept of battery run cars into limelight. Inspite of all the take a look at advanced technologies in electric car and government assist for this zero emission vehicle, rarely there are any electric cars on Indian roadways. A small two seater car or truck that got great deal of notice but was not adopted as predicted. The foremost downside was the value above effectiveness and performance. One can oly run upto 50 kms in one total cost. With The federal government’s sights firmly set on producing India a largely electric auto driven country by 2030, what does the longer term hold for the Indian vehicle consumer? Ola’s spouse in the electric car initiative Mahindra Electric is India’s only EV maker with indigenously made EV technologies. Its portfolio of EVs contains e2oPlus hatch, the eVerito sedan, the eSupro mini van, and panel vans. The long run is electric, like it or not. The Indian authorities has also laid out a plan to sell only electric cars in India by 2030. Devoid of fast-charging infrastructure—quickly-charging an EV demands considerably more ability than home 15 amp sockets, which could only present about three kW of energy, so 35 kWh normally takes almost 12 hrs to cost—one inevitably has “selection anxiety”. As opposed to the US, most Indians don’t have a personal garage. That's why, common and company-agnostic general public charging infrastructure becomes a important policy choice. I are searching on-line higher than 3 hrs in recent times, yet I hardly ever identified any intriguing report like yours. It truly is really price sufficient for me.
