What are the things an (minor) individual can do to help against climate change?

One book that really helped me rethink how I do things to be greener is called The Story of Stuff--this book is great because it thoroughly criticizes capitalism as the source of this problem while also connecting it to how we all live our daily lives. This video is a great introduction, their website is an excellent resource on ways you can get involved, and they have lots more videos. TL;DR: our society is obsessed with working and producing for the sake of it for endless growth instead of minimizing waste and work so we can rest and value the things we produce and buy. We should shift our thinking from endless production to only working and consuming things when we actually need to.

There’s a lot we can do in lots of different aspects of our lives and I think all of us (including myself for sure) could improve. No way can each of us do all of the things I’m gonna bring up in this post, but most of us could probably do a bit more. What we can do will vary depending on life circumstances and privilege, so keep in mind that not everyone will have access to these things and this is not an indictment on people who don’t do some of them (all of us, myself included) and it’s not even a comprehensive list, but it’s a start. Some of these things may not be possible for you as a minor, but you may be able to suggest them to your parents or keep them in mind once you move out on your own.

To make it simpler I will be breaking it down into different categories.

Political Engagement

Be politically engaged and vote / put pressure on politicians to adopt measures that will minimize global warming (this includes increasing regulation of corporate carbon emissions, protecting clean water, supporting the Green New Deal, protecting habitats, and simpler policies like eliminating single use bags and straws when possible, etc). I know you said you’re a minor, but you can still sign petitions and write to politicians (esp local ones). I’d say start reading up as much as you can on climate change policies and which politicians prioritize this issue so you can be ready once you are able to vote. You can still participate in protests / demonstrations and you may be able to join certain organizations like the Sierra Club (although you may need to be 18+ for some) Local Efforts You can join local organizations and volunteer / participate in beach/wildlife litter clean-ups and other efforts to improve your local environment or town. Pay attention to local issues like your parks, beaches, nearby wildlife, water and air policies, etc. In middle school and high school you’re probably required to do community service, so you can devote your hours to something climate change related. You can also find out what efforts are being made at your school to reduce carbon footprint and even get involved with your school board/ student government to address that.

Transportation

Minimize driving as much as possible. Use public transportation or walk or bike when you can. If you have a choice to work or go to school closer to where you live or to do work remotely, take it and minimize commuting. If you are in the market for a car, try to choose a hybrid or electric car or at least one with higher mileage. If driving is unavoidable where you live or for a specific trip, carpool where possible. Help out your coworkers or classmates by driving them or vice versa. This has the added advantage of helping others.

Energy Use / Pollution 

Be mindful of energy you might be wasting. Try purchasing rechargeable batteries instead of disposable or using rechargeable appliances instead of battery-operated where possible. Avoid leaving devices on or plugged in when they don’t need to be. Use lower light settings on your devices (this is better for your eyes anyway!). Find out if alternative sources of energy are possible for your house (such as solar power instead of coal). Don’t smoke/vape or pick up smoking/vaping as a habit or quit if you have. Avoid creating sources of smoke such as bonfires or wood stoves/fireplaces unless necessary. Minimize use of heaters / air conditioning except when necessary.

Fashion

Resist fast fashion: try to shop at thrift stores or when you buy new clothes, from sustainable outlets or at the very least more durable staples (i.e. something that will stay in fashion and in good shape). You want clothes that last as long as possible instead of following short-lived trends or being cheaply made and wearing out quickly. (Example: the prom dress I wore for high school was a chic but understated black dress that has lasted me over ten years--most people wear their prom dress and then toss it in the trash). When you outgrow your clothes or become tired of them, donate them to a thrift store, someone you know, or charity--don’t throw them away unless they are stained, have holes or are otherwise worn out.

Technology / Goods Don’t ditch your phone, tablet or computer for the latest model unless necessary. Avoid brands that are designed to die quickly and be replaced. Do research and try to purchase well-made products that will last and get repairs where possible. Avoid hasty purchases for things you will only use a short time then throw away. Try to buy things with re-use value instead of disposable (for instance, a re-washable mop or sponge instead of disposable wipes). When you decide you do not want a product anymore, donate it instead of taking it to the dump. You can also research companies that are making efforts to be reduce their carbon footprint and which are the worst offenders and try to buy from greener ones.

Food

Shop with reusable cloth bags or where not possible, recycle or reuse paper bags (one option during covid-19 is keeping reusable bags in your car or getting bags that roll up small to keep in your pocket and bagging them once you leave the store). Compost, give away or donate food you don’t eat before it expires. Avoid food with excessive plastic packaging. Try to buy local at farmer’s markets, local grocery store outlets or co-ops if affordable and feasible. Use biodegradable bags when shopping for produce instead of plastic bags. Consider minimizing your meat and/or dairy intake if possible. Try to buy in bulk where possible. Try to buy sustainably / ethically sourced food where possible.

Waste

Learn how to properly dispose of special kinds of waste like electronics, batteries and medications. Dispose of these properly instead of just tossing them in the trash. Re-use and recycle where possible. Compost. As mentioned above, avoid purchases that involve high levels of waste such as disposable items or those with built in obsolescence or a short life. Avoid unnecessary use of water (i.e. leaving the sink on while you brush your teeth, long showers, frequent baths). Where possible, avoid buying items with a lot of plastic packaging or individually wrapped parts.

Again, It’s not possible for every single person to do all of these things, but probably the majority of us could do more of these things. Just listing this out made me thing of more things I could be doing. I encourage people do do their own research too on ways to minimize their carbon footprint bc there’s probably a lot more than what I listed here.

The memories of last night were nothing but a mere blur as you writhed around in thin sheets. As your senses came back to you, a sharp, pounding pain hit your temples as if on cue with being blinded by the white light seeping from the windows. 

You squirmed around in the bed as if it were some desperate attempt to get more sleep than have to endure this hangover for the rest of the day. It was no use; your body was already in misery-mode and at that point, you just simply accepted the fate that you would be in Hell for the next 8 hours or so. With the little sight you had left, you looked up at the ceiling, soon realizing that you weren’t in your room. The pounding between your temples only growing stronger as you propped up your body from the mattress, looking around in the unfamiliar room. 

The walls were covered in intricate designs of cherry blossoms and Japanese motifs, made of a durable paper-cardboard hybrid. Oh no. The mattress was actually a futon on a tatami floor, the remains of a beige yukata were scattered across the flat room. You struggled to find balance as you stood up to find your phone, your stomach soon dropping at the sudden change in posture. 

“Don’t puke. Don’t puke. Don’t puke” You repeated to yourself as you lifted the blanket and shook the shit out of it until a loud thump would be heard from the ground. Soon enough, the feeling of a hard-plastic case dropping down on your foot help you locate it. 

4 percent. At least it was something. Your body was still in the process of coming back into consciousness, so it was a shock to look down at yourself for the first time since knocking out to see yourself dressed in the yukata undergarment. Checking your phone, brightness all the way down to conserve battery and vision, you immediately checked to see where the boys were. You knew you wouldn’t get this fucked up if you weren’t with the band, nobody gets this hungover by themselves. 

Find Friends showed that you, Ashton, Luke, and Sierra were all in the same building. Ash and Luke on one side while you and Sierra on the other. Zooming out more, you spotted Calum and Michael were staying somewhere roughly 6 miles from wherever you were- in a residential. It took all of your remaining brainpower to translate the name of the building into Google and then try to take in the fact that you, well, woke up in Japan. 

You tried Ashton first, being that he was your boyfriend and that he would be the most hungover out of the four of you at this hotel. Calum in a close second. No answer. Then Sierra, knowing that she was the mom-friend and the mom-drunk, she probably had her shit together.

“Hello?” Sierra’s voice came through, tired and definitely hungover.

“Hey, where are the boys?” You breathed a sigh of relief at the sound of Sierra’s voice coming through the receiver. 

“Ash and Luke are in the men’s quarters or whatever” 

“Where?” 

“The men’s quarters. Of the inn, we’re staying at? Do you not know where we are?” 

“Believe it or not I actually don’t” 

“Come down to the lobby and I’ll try to tell you everything” She chuckled and hung up the phone. You sighed and began to search for the remaining dress pieces, groaning with every step you took. Soon enough, you were able to find the last few pieces tucked into the creases of the padded floor. After putting your hair up and slipping on the slippers that had been left by the door, you made your way down to the lobby. 

You were never more relieved to see a familiar face as you spotted Sierra sat at a table with a hot cup of tea in her hand.“Green tea. Helps with hangovers” She smiled, pouring you a cup as you sat down at the table, resisting the urge to set your head down the second your butt hit the chair. 

“The boys are coming down right now, then we’re gonna head to the Airbnb Calum and Mike are at” 

“In these?” You signaled down at the yukatas you and Sierra were both wearing. 

“No, they have our clothes in a locker” Sierra let out a tired chuckle as she looked over at the doorway. The sleeve of the dark purple yukata she wore draped down as she waved towards the two men coming from the hallway. 

Both of the boy’s curls stuck out in a million different directions as their poorly-done robes dragged on the floor. Even like this, you couldn’t help but get butterflies as your drummer boy sat down next to you. His large hand rested on your thigh, rubbing circles over the fabric as you looked over at the hungover mess beside you. 

“How are you feeling?” You looked over at him, cupping his stubbled jaw in your hand, stroking your thumb against his cheek. 

“Pretty shitty” He breathed out, causing you to pout as you pressed your lips against his slightly chapped ones. 

“Better now” The taste of Tic Tacs and alcohol lingering from his breath as you pulled away, admiring the smile that followed before turning back towards Sierra and Luke. 

“So where are the other two?” You leaned forward, taking a sip of the green tea as Sierra looked down at her phone one more time, setting it down with a sigh.

“Calum and Michael are in an Airbnb in Kyoto. This place is a traditional Japanese inn. I think we landed here at like 5 in the afternoon and just partied?” 

“Sounds about right” Ashton breathed out, a tired smile forming across his face as you groaned, taking out your phone to check your bank account and evaluate the damage.

“I’m gonna order an Uber and we’ll change and then go make sure Cal and Mike are alive” Sierra tapped her nail against the table with every action she planned out, dismissing everyone to go get their clothes from the lockers.

You never realized how great yukatas were until you were in the process of changing back into a pair of tight pants and a crop top from the night before. The smell of tequila and weed stuck to the leather jacket as you let it loosely hang from your elbows. The switch from sandals to Louboutin’s was admittedly not your favorite.

As you stepped out of the changing room, the familiar feeling of a pair of massive arms wrapping around your waist caught you by surprise.

“Ash!” You laughed through gritted teeth, your feet slightly rising off the ground as he turned your body around, hands resting on the small of your back.

“Just wanted to get a look at what I couldn’t remember from last night,” Ashton said with a low voice, eyelids slightly hooded as he scanned your body up and down. 

You wanted to say the same. You couldn’t remember what anyone was wearing last night, especially Ash. And considering the fact that you probably nearly tore off whatever he was wearing last night, you wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything too expensive. Ash wore a black and red button down and black pants paired with a pair of maroon boots, it was an outfit you loved him in.

“You sure you feel okay?” You questioned, fingers twiddling with his necklace. He simply smiled and nodded before leaning down and pressing his lips against yours. 

Still, with freshly-brushed teeth, the taste of Corona continued to linger. This time it was Ash’s large, ringed hand cupping your jaw as you lifted one of your hands to play with his red curls. This action caused him to smile against your lips, slightly swaying himself with you between his arms.

You pulled away, knowing that Sierra and Luke were probably waiting for you two in the lobby. Your fingers still ran through Ashton’s hair, looking up at the pure, raw beauty standing in front of you.

2. Decide If You Want a 2-in-1

Many PC laptops fall into the category of 2-in-1 laptops, hybrid devices that can switch between traditional clamshell mode, tablet mode and other positions in between such as a tent or stand mode. 2-in-1s generally come in two different styles: detachables with screens that come off the keyboard entirely and flexible laptops with hinges that bend back 360 degrees to change modes. Most of these systems are much better at serving one purpose than the other, with bend-backs being laptops first and detachables offering a superior tablet experience. However, if you don't see the need to use your notebook as a slate, you'll usually get more performance for your money with a traditional clamshell laptop.

If you decide you want a 2-in-1, note that bendable usually have far better battery life than their detachable brethren.

3. Choose the Right Size

Before you look at specs or pricing, you need to figure out just how portable you need your laptop to be. Laptops are usually categorized by their display sizes:

11 to 12 inches: The thinnest and lightest systems around have 11- to 12-inch screens and typically weigh 2.5 to 3.5 pounds,

13 to 14 inches: Provides the best balance of portability and usability, particularly if you get a laptop that weighs under 4 pounds.

15 inches: The most popular size, 15-inch laptops usually weigh 4.5 to 6.5 pounds. Consider this size if you want a larger screen and you're not planning to carry your notebook around often.

17 to 18 inches: If your laptop stays on your desk all day every day, a 17- or 18-inch system could provide you with the kind of processing power you need to play high-end games or do workstation-level productivity.

4.Mind the Brand

Recently, the Australia-based firm Battery Mineral Resources Ltd. asked the federal government for permission to drill four exploratory wells to see if the hot, salty brine beneath the valley floor contains economically viable concentrations of lithium. The soft, silvery-white metal is a key component of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and is crucial to the production of electric and hybrid vehicles.

The drilling request has generated strong opposition from the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club and the Defenders of Wildlife, who say the drilling project would be an initial step toward the creation of a full-scale lithium mining operation. They say lithium extraction would bring industrial sprawl, large and unsightly drying ponds and threaten a fragile ecosystem that supports Nelson’s bighorn sheep, desert tortoises and the Panamint alligator lizard, among other species.

The battle could be a fierce one. Lithium is expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks, and has been designated by the Trump administration as a mineral essential to the economic and national security of the United States. We’ve been waiting a long time to get behind the wheel of a third-generation Toyota Tundra – the second generation has been built here in Texas for the last 15 years, and Toyota’s had no trouble selling every truck it makes.

“It certainly wasn’t planned” to wait so long, says Scott MacKenzie, Toyota Canada’s Senior National Manager for External Affairs.

“The truck’s done really, really well, but at some point, we knew we were going to need a massive redesign. We knew there was a new platform coming, so we extended it beyond (the usual model lifetime) so we could do the full model change on the next-generation platform. It took longer than anyone, including people in Toyota, actually anticipated.”

  The thing is, the Tundra wasn’t exciting or groundbreaking but it was reliable. It held its value better than any other pickup truck, according to JD Power and Canadian Black Book and other independent evaluators. Its sales aren’t huge – in Canada, Ford sells as many F-150s in a month as Toyota sells Tundras in a year – but the plan is to double those sales with the new generation.

That all-new model will come on sale in December with a 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 gas engine, and next spring with the same engine attached as a hybrid to an electric motor. There will be six different trim levels, three different bed lengths, and two different cabin sizes – not as much choice as the Detroit brands, but plenty of options none the less.

  Prices are still not announced, though Toyota says all will be revealed before the end of this month. “It’s going to be competitively priced, but we’re looking really at the comparison basis of what is in the market,” says Lisa Materazzo, Toyota Motor North America’s Group Vice President for Marketing. In other words, its pricing will depend on the pricing of all the other makers’ trucks.

Official fuel consumption is also not yet revealed, though Toyota surely knows the numbers. In lead-footed test drives here, I saw 16.4 mpg from the gas model and 20.0 from the hybrid; that’s hardly a scientific test, but it translates to 14.3 L/100 km and 11.8 respectively. That’s regular gas, of course. Normal use should be much more frugal.

LOOKS:

Each of the six different trims gets its own unique grille, either slats or a honeycomb, though the differences can be subtle. The most obvious is the off-road TRD Pro, which includes a lightbar under the word Toyota, while all others use the brand’s logo. There’s a lot more chrome on the 1794 trim, which is named after the year the Texas ranch was established that is now the home to the Tundra’s assembly plant. There are also eight different wheels assigned to specific trims, all but the most basic being aluminum.

Only a truck nerd will quickly recognize the Tundra from its side profile. From all angles, everything looks strong and large, which is most of the appeal. The overall shape is surprisingly aerodynamic too, though tow hooks at the front are an optional accessory. If they were fitted as standard, they’d affect the truck’s wind drag, apparently. So try not to get stuck and need a tow from the front.

INTERIOR:

The cabin is not so infinitely variable as with the Detroit trucks, but different trims offer different colours and upgrades. The most basic trim is the SR and it doesn’t include the 14-inch central display screen that Toyota is pushing with this truck, but it’s an option on the other lower grades and standard on the upper grades. Digital instrumentation is also an upper-grade feature.

The seats are comfortable and spacious, and the armrests are at the right height for the driver’s elbows. Everything falls well to hand, and the controls are fairly intuitive. The Tundra keeps its signature vertical-lowering rear window, which can be practical for carrying long objects. Once you climb up into the cabin, there’s no doubt you’re in a full-size truck.

  PERFORMANCE:

I drove a variety of trim levels, and both the regular and hybrid engines, and none of them felt underpowered or laboured. Towing capacity varies a little but is close to 12,000 lbs (5,440 kg) for all the new Tundras, which is an increase of more than 17 per cent over the outgoing model. You could really hear the turbos spooling when towing a large trailer, but there was no hesitation or strain.

It’s downright annoying that Toyota has not yet revealed the official fuel consumption of the two powertrains, because that’s surely the main reason for dropping in size from the previous 5.7-litre V8. They’re much stronger than the old engine’s 381 hp and 400 lbs.-ft. of torque: the new V6 produces 389 hp but 479 lbs.-ft., while the hybrid produces 437 hp and a hefty 583 lbs.-ft. The automatic transmission is now a 10-speed, up four more gears from before.

Here in Texas, speeds are high on the interstate and the Tundra had no trouble jostling with all the other trucks on the highway. It was a smooth ride now that the suspension at the rear uses coil springs instead of the old leaf springs with a solid axle. They’re matched to a double wishbone at the front, and adaptive variable suspension is an option, as is load-levelling rear height control.

I drove an off-road course in a 1794 TRD that proved the electronic locking rear differential works well when picking its way up loose rocks. I didn’t complete the course though, because I ripped apart one of the Falken tires, shredding it on a sharp tree stump. Oops. They’re an option here, but come standard with the TRD Pro grade, as do Fox shocks.

TECHNOLOGY:

The new Tundra comes with various electronic drive modes for Sport and Eco and Comfort and more – how many you get depends on whether you have the adaptive variable suspension. All the grades include Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5, which provides dynamic radar cruise control, precollision warning and assistance, and lane departure alert with steering assistance.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is now standard, and the multimedia platform is taken from the new Lexus NX for its first use in a Toyota. Basically, it offers much of the seamless Navigation and voice control that you’re used to with your smartphone, but on a large screen and will keep going even when you’re out of cell range.

  There’s a useful towing feature, too, that keeps your trailer in a straight line when you’re backing up. There was a demonstration model available that didn’t work properly for me because it was incorrectly calibrated, but it worked well enough on other trucks that were available with trailers.

CARGO:

The Tundra’s payload in the back is increased to 1,940 lbs (880 kg), a boost of more than 10 per cent from before. Everything is steel back there, though the composite bed itself is dent- and corrosion-resistant and reinforced with aluminum to bring down its weight.

THE VERDICT:

The Detroit-brand trucks offer more choice and more features and may turn out to be less expensive to buy, but how much choice do you really need? If Toyota’s new engines are as reliable as before – and everything suggests they will be – then the Tundra will surely maintain its dependability and still hold its value better than every other truck. For many owners, that’s the most important thing.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Ford F-150 en voyage et ma «folie» Lotus!

Les choses ne se produisent pas toujours comme on le veut. Je devais terminer ma participation à l’ÉcoMois de l’AJAC en roulant avec une Jeep Wrangler Hybrid mais Stellantis Canada en a décidé autrement. À la place, j’ai eu droit à la fourgonnette de luxe Pacifica mais en version hybride électrique, un autre véhicule qui était inscrit au programme de l’ÉcoMois. Par conséquent, je devrai remettre mes impressions de conduite de la Wrangler 4xe à plus tard. En attendant, voici quelques mots sur la Pacifica hybride qui, avouons-le, devrait être un choix logique pour des déplacements locaux en famille.

Je vous ferai grâce des détails esthétiques de la Pacifica vu que j’ai décrit ce véhicule en détail il y a quelques mois dans ce blogue. Toutefois, c’était alors la version «régulière» mais à traction intégrale. Dans le cas qui nous intéresse ici, la version hybride électrique enfichable («Plug-In» si vous voulez utiliser les termes américains) n’est livrable qu’avec la traction avant. Les éléments «techniques» impliquent le V6 à essence de 3,6 litres et deux moteurs électriques, le tout développant quelque 260 chevaux (curieusement, un peu moins que la version à essence régulière) ce qui permet des temps d’accélérations de quelque 8 secondes pour passer du point mort à 100 km/h. Pas si mal pour un véhicule de ce gabarit!

Au départ, la Pacifica Hybrid ne se déplace qu’avec le moteur électrique. L’autonomie de la batterie est d’alors environ 50 kilomètres. Passé cette limite, le V6 entre en action mais il continue d’être appuyé par le moteur électrique selon la sollicitation du conducteur. Selon mes impressions de conduite, cette Pacifica équivaut bien plusieurs véhicules de cette motorisation et plus même, ne serait-ce que par sa capacité d’y accepter jusqu’à huit passagers en tout confort. Malheureusement, dans sa configuration hybride, la Pacifica perd sa caractéristique de sièges du centre qui se rabattent dans le plancher (c’est là qu’il y a les batteries!).

Mon essai fut plutôt court, juste le temps de prendre connaissance avec le véhicule. Selon plusieurs sources, la consommation d’essence de cette Chrysler tournerait autour des 8,0 l./100 km. Éventuellement, j’espère remettre la main sur ce véhicule pour un vrai «road trip», la seule véritable façon d’apprécier tout véhicule, surtout une fourgonnette de ce calibre (qui, en passant, a été votée Meilleure voiture électrique de l’année par l’AJAC en 2020 !). Il est difficile d’en établir le prix exact. Il existe deux versions, la Limited et la Pinnacle et il est possible (toujours possible, je l’espère) d’obtenir plusieurs rabais dus au fait qu’elle est hybride électrique ce qui pourrait ramener son prix autour des 45 000 $. J’y reviendrai certainement.

Plus de 1000 km en F-150

Lorsque Ford a «relancé» son F-150 il y a quelques mois, j’ai eu l’opportunité de vous en faire connaître deux versions, l’originale avec moteur EcoBoost de 3,5 litres et la version «hybride» avec le même moteur mais aidé d’un moteur électrique. Évidemment, pour les besoins de la cause, la version hybride était plus intéressante, surtout pour des déplacements urbains et l’économie de carburant qui en découle. Je n’ai donc couvert que quelques centaines de kilomètres avec chacun des modèles durant la même semaine ce qui n’est pas toujours représentatif des attentes d’un automobiliste voulant en savoir plus sur ce nouveau véhicule.

Le hasard a voulu que je puisse remettre la main sur la version Platinum à moteur EcoBoost régulier pour quelques jours la semaine dernière. Et je l’ai utilisé pour apporter certains outils imposants à mon fils qui vit en Abitibi. Voilà donc la bonne occasion de faire un vrai «road trip» avec le tout récent F-150 et profiter de son utilité.

Parce que j’entends très souvent des critiques sur un tel véhicule. Fréquemment, on le mentionne comme étant un «ennemi» de l’environnement (les «gros F-150 énergivores») sans vraiment tenir compte du fait que plusieurs gens les utilisent pour leur travail ou pour déplacer leurs outils ou leurs véhicules de loisir. Généralement, ces commentaires (qui valent aussi pour les Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan et leurs variants sport utilitaires) les placent trop souvent dans un contexte urbain. Oui, ils sont plus gros qu’une Corolla. Mais leur utilité en est toute différente.

Le plus ironique, c’est que lorsqu’on sort d’un milieu urbain, on voit bien souvent plus de pick-up que de voitures! En route de Laval vers l’Abitibi, je jouais un jeu avec ma femme lui demandant de deviner quelle marque de véhicule pouvait s’apprêter à nous doubler. Vous vous en doutez, il y a avait alors plusieurs F-150 (à un moment donné, il n’y en avait pas un, ni deux, ni trois mais bien quatre F-150 qui me doublaient l’un derrière l’autre, tous avec une sorte de charge quelconque). En général, les F-150 (et compagnie) servent à quelque tâche!

Le F-150 Platinum que j’ai utilisé s’est avéré un véritable véhicule de grand luxe tant sur l’autoroute que sur route secondaire (et même en ville de campagne!). La charge dans la caisse (qui était très bien arrimée grâce au système d’attaches du constructeur aidant), nous nous sommes retrouvés dans un véhicule extrêmement doux et silencieux. De plus, son V6 était suffisamment puissant pour lui procurer des accélérations impressionnantes et des reprises étonnantes. Mais voici la plus grande surprise. J’ai obtenu une moyenne de 10,3 l./100 km durant ce voyage à une vitesse moyenne d’environ 105 km/h! Si ça ne vous dit rien, sachez que c’est la consommation qui se rapproche le plus de celle d’une berline moyenne comme une Chrysler 300, une Ford Taurus ou même une Toyota Camry avec un moteur V6! Et cela, avec du carburant régulier en plus! Ajoutez à cela la capacité de tirer une remorque allant jusqu’à plus de 12 000 livres! Voilà de quoi répondre à ses détracteurs qui disent ne jamais en vouloir «parce que ça consomme trop!».

Incidemment, ce F-150 est aussi un véhicule à quatre roues motrices (sur commande ou automatique) qui peut se déplacer dans des sentiers modérés (et qui s’avérera presque invulnérable dans la neige en hiver). De plus, comme c’en est le cas pour tous les F-150 4 x 4 vendus au Canada avec les ensembles de remorquage, celui-ci avait cette commande qui permettait à son opérateur de reculer avec une remorque et de placer celle-ci à l’aide de ce bouton rotatif sans même toucher au volant! Et, si vous revenez à mon article initial de mars dernier, vous y verrez des prises de courant dans le flanc gauche de la caisse!

Évidemment, un tel véhicule vient à un prix, dans ce cas, plus de 80 000 $. Mais, c’est le prix à payer pour autant de possibilités. Et, à voir le nombre de F-150 sur la route (et lorsqu’on en analyse les chiffres de ventes étonnants), on ne peut en dénier la popularité. Oh! Juste avant de terminer, méfiez-vous, il y a de la police sur la route 117 qui mène en Abitibi. Et les policiers y roulent en…F-150!

Ma petite folie Lotus

Enfin, plusieurs de mes amis ont vu cette photo d’une «épave» de Lotus Europe sur une remorque derrière le Nissan Armada dont il était question dans ce blogue la semaine dernière. Oui, c’est mon prochain projet.

Ceux qui me connaissent savent que j’aime reconstruire des maquettes, des miniatures d’automobiles abandonnées ou fortement «abusées» et leur donner une «seconde vie». J’en ai fait à toutes les échelles, 1/32e, 1/25e, 1/16e et même 1/8e. Cette fois, ce sera au 1/1!

Cette Europa est abandonné depuis plusieurs années. Ayant été partiellement endommagée par un feu à l’arrière, certains bricoleurs ont tenté de la modifier…je ne sais trop comment. Il y a moins d’une dizaine d’années, le châssis avait été restauré. Il a même reçu un moteur Renault plus puissant. Mais le travail fut abandonné et le châssis s’est retrouvé à l’extérieur, exposé aux intempéries.

Je l’ai donc retrouvé en pièces détachées et lorsque j’ai montré les photos de l’auto à mon ami Michel Pigeon, celui-là même qui a construit ma Cobra (et quelque 30 autres!), il m’a répondu que c’était du travail mais que ce n’était pas impossible. Surtout pour lui qui sait comment travailler le métal et la fibre de verre.

L’auto est donc maintenant en sécurité où je devrai commencer bientôt un travail de démontage. S’il y aura des pièces à remplacer, j’ai déjà le livre de «construction» de l’Europa avec tous les détails concernant le châssis, la mécanique (en majeure partie empruntée d’autres voitures) incluant les mesures complètes.

Ce sera certes un travail de patience de trois ou quatre ans. Mais j’ai bien l’intention de l’amener à bon port. Et si ce blogue survit au temps, j’aurai certainement la fierté de vous montrer ce que je sais faire avec ce que les modélistes appellent «a glue bomb» ou ce que j’appelle une épave. Un petit brin de folie, quoi!

La Lotus Emira !  

Enfin, pour terminer ce blogue, je viens de voir les premières images de la toute nouvelle Lotus Emira, une toute petite GT qui remplacera sous peu les Elise et Exige. Les présentations sont plutôt discrètes mais on y apprend que l’Emira est conçue comme les autres Lotus avec un châssis léger et une carrosserie toute en fibre de verre. Elle sera disponible avec un moteur à quatre cylindres AMG (Mercedes…) de 2,0 litres qui fait 360 chevaux ou un V6 Toyota de 400 chevaux. L’Emira sera la toute dernière voiture de Lotus avec un moteur à essence. Les modèles à venir seront tous électriques…

Mot slutten av 2022 vil motorfabrikken i Valencia produsere den nye 2,5-liters Duratec-hybridmotoren for Europa. Dette er motoren som i dag bl.a. finnes i Kuga ladbar hybrid og Kuga fullhybrid.

Den 2,5-liters Atkinson hybrid-motoren er den første i sitt slag som blir produsert av Ford i Europa. Det viser hvor viktig ladbare hybrider og hybrider er for Fords nåværende og fremtidige produktportefølje i Europa. 2,5-liters Duratec-hybridmotoren produseres i dag på Fords motorfabrikk i Mexico.

Øker kapasiteten for produksjon av batterier

Ford bekreftet også at de vil investere ytterligere 5,2 millioner euro for økt produksjonskapasitet av batteripakker på fabrikken i Valencia. Dette kommer i tillegg til en investering på 24 millioner euro som ble annonsert i januar 2020. Produksjon av batteripakker ble startet opp i september i fjor og den ekstra kapasiteten er nødvendig for å dekke den økende etterspørselen, både fra dagens og fremtidens elektrifiserte modeller.

Investerer rundt 190 milliarder kroner i elektrifisering

Tidligere i år annonserte Ford at de skulle investere 22 milliarder dollar (rundt 190 milliarder kroner) globalt i elektrifisering. Dette var nesten dobbelt så mye som selskapets tidligere investeringsplan for elektriske kjøretøy.

De investerer også en milliard dollar (rundt 8,5 milliarder kroner) for å modernisere fabrikken i Køln for å bygge Ford Cologne Electrification Center. Dette er en av de største bilproduksjonsanleggene i Europa, og hovedkvarteret til Ford Europa. Her skal Ford produsere sin første europeisk-produserte helelektriske personbil fra 2023. Det vurderes også om det skal produseres nok en helelektrisk modell på fabrikken.

Utvikler personbilporteføljen for å møte en helelektrisk fremtid

I midten av 2026 skal 100 % av Fords personbilbilmodeller i Europa tilbys som helelektriske eller ladbare hybrider. I 2030 forventer Ford at alle personbiler de skal selge i Europa vil være helelektriske.

Samtidig som Ford forbereder en helelektrisk fremtid for personbilen, så endrer også europeiske kunders preferanser seg. I 2020 var hele 39 % av Fords personbiler SUV-er eller crossovere. Dette er en økning på hele 8 % fra 2019. Andelen elektrifiserte drivlinjer fortsetter også å øke – hele 50 % av Kuga-salget er nå ladbar hybrid.

Som et resultat av endringer i kundenes ønsker og preferanser, vil Ford fase ut Mondeo fra slutten av mars neste år. Fords andre store crossovere og flerbruksbiler – som 7-seteren Ford Galaxy og Ford S-MAX – vil fortsatt bli produsert. Begge modellene ble nylig lansert som hybrid-versjoner.

Fortsatt sterk satsting på nye personbilmodeller

Ford Mondeo, som ble lansert i 1993, var den første av Fords modeller som ble kalt en «global» modell. Siden den ble lansert i Europa – og som en erstatter for Ford Sierra, har det blitt solgt rundt 5 millioner Ford Mondeo.

Ford vil fortsette å utvikle og fornye sin personbilportefølje i Europa og styrke sin posisjon med modeller som Kuga, Puma og Explorer ladbar hybrid. The expanding demand and shifting choice for sports utility vehicles plus crossovers have claimed an additional victim, and this time, not necessarily in the US – the Ford Mondeo . Seeing sales of the Mondeo large family car gradually dwindling through the years especially in European countries, Kia acquired no choice but in order to discontinue manufacturing and product sales of the so-called world vehicle at the end of March 2022.

Ford released the Mondeo in 1993, becoming the first Ford automobile marked as a “global” vehicle, since it was meant to combine several Ford models all over the world. It replaced the Kia Sierra in Europe, had been sold as the Fusion in america, and since launch, about five million Mondeo happen to be sold in the European area. But it sales have been decreasing in the past several years.

On the other hand, SUVs and cars are becoming more popular in European countries. In 2019, SUVs plus crossovers accounted for 31 % of Ford's Europe product sales. A year later, the figure surged in order to 38 percent , which usually meant that nearly four of 10 vehicles bought from Europe last year were Sports utility vehicles crossovers. Hence, it was not really hard to understand why Kia arrived at such decision.

Nonetheless, the particular axing of the Mondeo is really a small part of the bigger items ahead at Ford within Europe.
