Away from the roads, where buggies and carts stir up dust in their hasty journeys, the lanes and pathways of the Brindleton countryside remain wild. Quenched by recent rain, the hawthorns and witch-alders are once again green, with little red rosehips swelling on the dogrose bushes. Branches hang low overhead, brushing Kit’s head as Chestnut picks her way through the undergrowth.
He makes a habit of riding this way when he’s by himself. In the seclusion of the paths there’s little chance of meeting others — he knows they mean to be neighbourly with their greetings, but he prefers the quiet of the paths, where the only noise comes from the rustling of leaves. Chestnut requires no more conversation than the odd gentle encouragement or pat on the neck.
All too soon his route emerges from the trees, into the sun of an early Autumn afternoon. The way back home passes by Bridgebend Farm, so Kit isn’t entirely surprised to see Zachariah Miller leaning against the yard fence.
“Hello, Kit.” A warm smile crinkles the corners of Zachariah’s eyes as he recognises horse and rider. “I haven’t seen you around here too much lately, though I’ve seen enough of your Meg and little Daisy. You been avoiding me, son?”
“Not at all, Zach. Just been busy, that’s all.” says Kit as he reins in Chestnut.
“Well, I can’t begrudge a man any hard work. How’s things up at Maple Farm?” Zachariah’s weatherbeaten brow and craggy face put Kit in mind of his father, but they’re where the comparison starts and ends. The crow’s feet at the corners of Zachariah’s eyes come from laughter, and there’s a kindly aspect to his face that means he could never be mistaken for John Calloway. Depsite that, memories surface unbidden of the cold, hardened man for whom nothing was ever good enough.
Do you think you’ll ever mean anything to me, boy? The words ring in his ears as fresh as the day they were said.
“Good enough, thank you. The wheat’s done well, and our potatoes were better than last year’s.” says Kit brightly, conscious of how long he’s been silent. No need to mention how much of the profits went into the decoration of the farmhouse. It was worth it, to see Meg smile.
“I’m glad to hear it. And while you’re here, I’ll let you know something that might make next year even better — there’s a Mr Allen out in Rockland who’s just started a tidy little crop export business, and I reckon if you went down to see him he’d be willing to make a deal for some of your next year’s harvest if it’s a good one. It may seem like a hassle, but selling abroad will earn you much more than only selling locally.” says Zachariah.
“If that all’s true then it’ll certainly suit us well. I can spare the time now, so I’ll be sure to head over. Much obliged, Zach.”
“You’re welcome, son. You’re doing a fine job with Maple Farm, and I don’t see why you shouldn’t profit from it.”
“I guess not.” Kit smiles ruefully. He’s pleased by Zachariah’s approval, but it’s tempered by the knowledge that if Zachariah knew what was really behind his success at Maple Farm, he may not be so liberal with his praise; the thought makes his stomach lurch. “I better be getting on now, Meg will be wondering where I’ve got to.”
“In that case, you better had be on your way.” Zachariah chuckles.
Zachariah’s suggestion plays over and over in Kit’s mind as he turns Chestnut down the lane to Maple Farm. It’s a good offer, a great one, even. Father Blackett might call it divine deliverance, but church has never been anything more to Kit than somewhere you go on a Sunday. But it is some sort of deliverance, a chance to do right by his family. To provide, like all good husbands and fathers should. There’s no guarantee that it will work out — but hell, what’s another risk on top of the ones he’s already taken?
The part of him where harsh voices of bygone arguments echo begins to quiet, replaced by the steady beats of Chestnut’s hooves. The yard is hardly quiet, filled with the squawks of chickens and the occasional low from Bluebell in the cow-pen, but it bring the warm feeling of coming home. A home that even closer to being fully theirs.
In the barn, Chestnut nickers affectionately as he rubs her down. She at least demands nothing but oats in the morning and hay in the evening, her loyalty unwavering as long as her stomach is full.
“You’ll always love me, won’t you girl?” He whispers somewhere into her nose.

kit calloway (he/him) | for @plumdale's galia
meet kit, chestnut ridge's most lovelorn cowboy...
rancher
gloomy
family-oriented
minimal cc (hair and skin details) / private download (if you want him, no worries if not!)
backstory (+ more pictures) under the cut!
ok y'all, i may have gotten a liiittle overexcited, but this is kit! i suck at writing character backstory but i have a lot of Thoughts about him so bear with me.
chestnut ridge born and raised
youngest of four brothers brought up on a farm by their father
growing up his family was pretty distant, so he's always yearned for a large, close family
he's very shy and quiet, but such a romantic
happiest working out on the land
he seems pretty intimidating when you first meet him, but once you get through the shyness he's a complete softy
this guy would do anything for someone he loves, even give it all up and move to the city
though there's no saying he won't regret it when he's done it

Tallulah Owens || fashion -;- casino royale gala-;-
she channels an old hollywood vibe draped in a strapless number in roulette red. the look is complete with matching closed toe stilettos, bow clutch, & Calloway heirloom jewelry she inherited when James passed. Her hair is pinned to one side and adorned with Hollywood curls that cascade down her backside. make-up is kept soft highlighting her chestnut irises and showcasing her naturally high cheekbones.

You ate and delivered and left no crumbs with the book question, but I am curious, what about the booktok books, queen?👀
it all started with the addicted/calloway series for me, i remember finishing it in like two months and there are ten books in total so it definitely got me out of my reading slump for sure. i love all the characters so much, but i will say that there is a weird ass age-gap between the two characters that just doesn't sit right with me, but it's another issue.
then there is the dirty air series by lauren asher, I MEAN. is it the best literary writing i've ever seen? probably not. but i will protect this series with my life it just hit home for me. if you want to read it, it is about formula one and the characters were actually inspired by actual drivers (spoiler alert! noah was definitely supposed to be charles, liam is rbr!seb and i will not change my opinion, jax is of course lewis and the love of my life santiago is carlos!!)
i also loved the sinners anonymous series, and yes, it is a mafia series BUT HEAR ME OUT, he burns the car of the man she's about to marry. we love a king whose love language is acts of service.
here's some more books i loved:
anything by ella maise, my personal fav is to hate adam connor, obvs.
the queen's cove series by stephanie archer - chef's kiss, amazing, spectacular, every single book is outstanding!!
chestnut springs series by elsie silvers - cowboys, hockey players, BULL RIDERS, overall very hot and very good and nice and perfect.
better than the movies by lynn painter - i fucking love wes and liz and can't wait for the second book, this a very cute rom-com inspired book!
i definitely have some more but i'd have to check my goodreads lol!

Civil Rights: What are you taking home from the trip?
Over this trip, I have learned a lot about the civil rights movement. The most important thing I will take back are the personal experiences that were shared with us about the events we learned about. I thought that the people with real experience and connections to the civil rights movement, like Pastor Webb, the family of Austin Calloway, and Terry Chestnut (the son of J.L. Chestnut), gave the most passionate and powerful explanations and stories. Their connection means more than something you can learn in any museum. When I look back on this trip, the first things I will remember are those people and the stories they told us.

Like mother like daughter, Tallulah's deep chestnut irises sparkled wide at the man before her. The apple certainly didn't fall too far from the tree. “Oh yes, the committee knew exactly what they were doing. Former beauty queen and all.” Tallulah explained, punctuating her sentence with a gentle hair flip. She didn’t usually flaunt her pageant status, but there was a certain familiarity about the man that she couldn't quite place, and she found herself playing along.
In the next moment, Tallulah accepted the hundred dollar bill and was about to thank the man for his generosity when he sweetened the deal. At his proposition, Tallulah canted her head, mind reeling with how she may have met this handsome fellow before. This wasn't like Tallulah. This wasn't like Tallulah at all. She was usually so good with names and faces having had to remember so many of them back in her pageant days not to mention while she was married into the enormous Calloway family.
But it was the man's velvety smile that gave him away, so smooth it was almost criminal. “The State Fair.” Tallulah said just above a whisper, beginning to piece things together. Realization settled in first, and all of a sudden the former beauty queen was twenty-five again, the Texas slipping right out of her. "Oh my heavens! You were that musician. I walked out to a beautiful jazz number of yours." She continued a bit louder, more animated. The memories seemed to flood her now. "Axel was it?"
There were just some faces that you didn't ever forget, and the face of Tallulah Owens was most certainly one of them where Abel was concerned, even despite the fact that the crossing of their paths had been so fleeting that he had his doubts that she would even remember it ever happening.
The year was 2009, and Abel had been hired to play at a State Fair that Tallulah had also been scheduled to appear at as the new Miss America, which had led to them crossing paths. He couldn't remember ever being as charmed by anyone as he had been by her during that meeting, and even 14 years later, he could distinctly remember thinking that it was no wonder that she had won the Miss America crown.
Now, Abel wasn't one to undersell himself under normal circumstances. He knew by typical standards, he was more memorable than most, especially when it came to the South, where he was still something of a regional celebrity to this very day. But he hadn't quite been to that level at the time he had met Tallulah, and if ever there was a time where he felt like it was likely that someone wouldn't remember meeting him, this was it; after all, how many noteworthy people had she likely been introduced to right around that same time? Still, whether she would remember him or not, there was something about the idea of talking to Tallulah all of these years later that made it worth the possibility that his pride might take a bit of a ding if she did in fact, not remember who he was.
After calling out her name, he approached with a smooth as satin smile, a laugh coming out easily at her words. "They've got you selling 50/50 tickets? I hope they're prepared to break their fundraising record." He commented as he pulled his wallet from the pocket of his suit jacket and handed her a hundred dollar bill. "I'll take however many tickets that gets me. And tell you what, if you can remember my name, then I'll pledge to donate the winners pot back to that great cause you were just talking about if I win."

George Harrison, 1992; photo by Mark Seliger.
Song spotlight: "Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea" & "Rocking Chair In Hawaii" —
“On [British] television about a year ago I did this thing singing ‘The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea.’ It’s for this guy Jools Holland; he’s done a couple of these TV shows. One was called Walking To New Orleans with Fats Domino and different people. This one was called Mr. Road Runner. It’s about the Devil trying to follow him, and it talks about Robert Johnson and all that, so he asked me to do a song about something to do with the devil, [laughter] and I remembered this one from Cab Calloway.” - George Harrison, Goldmine, November 27, 1992
“And when we came across a tape of the live TV version of that old chestnut, `Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea,' which George had recorded years ago with Jools Holland and his band, it was magic. George was front and centre with his ukulele, playing it brilliantly, and his voice was so strong and happy. We had to include that on the album. He was proud of that performance.” - Jeff Lynne, ezfolk.com, November 9, 2002
“I think the first person who really got me interested in guitar was Jimmie Rodgers, the Singing Brakeman. My father enjoyed music and he used to go away to sea, and he brought back this big windup gramophone and Jimmie Rodgers records: ‘Blue Yodel’ and ‘Waiting For A Train.’” - George Harrison, Billboard, December 5, 1992
“As for Hoagy Carmichael, I’ve been nuts for him since I was a kid. I cut his ‘Hong Kong Blues’ on Somewhere in England, and there’s still a few more of his I wouldn’t mind doing, like ‘Old Rocking Chair.’ Maybe one day — not just yet, but one day when I get a bit older…” - George Harrison, Musician, November 1987
“The original tongue-in-cheek take during All Things Must Pass was a straight pastiche of the Williams track [‘Long Gone Lonesome Blues’]. […] It was almost as if in memory of the proto-recliners honored in song by Harrison heroes Hoagy Carmichael and Big Bill Broonzy, although it’s remains an obvious Hank Williams cover at heart.” - While My Guitar Gently Weeps: The Music of George Harrison (2006) (x)

Favorites : The Inkwell (1994)
In the wake of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, the doors seemed wide open for a number of young Black directors to step into the business, and one of the youngest and brightest was Matty Rich. After writing, directing and producing the breakout debut film that was Straight Out of Brooklyn, Rich returned to the scene with a completely different look in the form of The Inkwell, but unfortunately (or possibly fortunately, as he found success in other realms), the film did not connect the same way as his debut. In my opinion, this was a shame, as I’ve deeply enjoyed The Inkwell from my first access to it.
Sixteen year old Drew Tate (Larenz Tate) is an emotionally stunted and misunderstood young man living in Upstate New York. His parents, Kenny (Joe Morton) and Brenda Tate (Suzzanne Douglass), decide to spend the summer of 1976 by taking Drew to visit his family in Martha’s Vineyard for two weeks. The Tates settle in with Spencer (Glynn Turman) and Francis Phillips (Vanessa Bell Calloway), Drew’s aunt and uncle, his grandmother Evelyn (Mary Alice), and his cousin Junior (Duane Martin), but things get off to a rocky start. Spencer and Francis suggest that Drew meet with their friend Dr. Wade (Phyllis Yvonne Stickley), a psychiatrist, much to the behest of Kenny, but Drew quickly finds himself obsessed with a local girl named Lauren Kelly (Jada Pinkett-Smith). Despite the constant teasing of Junior and his two friends, Darryl (Markus Redmond) and Moe (Perry Moore), Drew takes a shot at getting to know Lauren, and in the process, discovers more about himself than he realized was possible.
While The Inkwell is at heart a romantic comedy and coming of age film, at its heart, it’s truly a film about the struggle between socio-political and economic ideas that plague Black people in their struggle to find where they fit in. While we are given two extreme examples in Kenny and Spencer, at the heart of their characters, they perfectly define those concerned with the betterment of their people as a whole versus those who think that financial success will bring Black people to the place where they belong in society. Kenny and Brenda’s struggles with raising Drew also bring up long-held assumptions of and hesitations to use psychiatry and psychology as a way to raise a child, chiefly based on ideas that Drew would be labelled crazy, and they would be labelled failures as parents.
Speaking of Drew, I found myself extremely connected to and understanding of the character seeing that I was a young, imaginative and, at times, isolated individual growing up. Having our protagonist be an understanding, sensitive and caring young man rather than someone forced to make life-altering decisions with their back against the wall was a refreshing change of pace. Positioning Drew as the son of Kenny begs the question if Drew’s sensitive nature stems directly from Kenny’s radical posturing and outward focus, as if his personality and actions were a cry for attention of some sort. This is further driven home with details such as Drew’s doll/imaginary friend Iago whom he constantly talks to, or his tandem bike that publicly broadcasts his need for companionship.
It’s not only nice to see a film with a majority Black cast in a location such as Martha’s Vineyard, but more importantly, nice to see a coming of age film with Black characters that’s absent of the hood as the primary setting. Speaking of settings, the Phillips home is definitely impressive, and Junior’s room specifically is a goldmine of stimulus. With the many, many personalities presented through our characters, we are given a surprisingly deep exploration of Black identity. As a 1970′s film, it probably doesn’t need to be stated, but the soundtrack is KILLER. I remember this film being poorly received when it was released, which was a shame, because Matty Rich put together a truly poignant film… perhaps it was public expectations in the wake of the successful debut Straight Out of Brooklyn, but in my opinion, people missed out on a low-key classic.
With the iconic role of O-Dog the only one on his resume at the time, it would have been very easy for Larenz Tate to fall into the realm of typecasting, but The Inkwell allowed him to be as vulnerable and short of confidence as O-Dog was menacing and terrifying. Joe Morton channels enough radical posturing to be believable as an ex-revolutionary, but not at the cost of displaying caring and loving characteristics. Suzzanne Douglass displays all of the patience and unconditional love it takes to raise a troubled young man. Glynn Turman dives headlong into bougie characteristics with great aplomb, barely avoiding becoming a caricature in the best ways possible, while Vanessa Bell Calloway steps in as the support system that allows Spencer to validate his actions. Mary Alice plays withdrawn and guarded, only letting down her guard as the film comes close to resolution. Duane Martin brings most of the comedy beats to the table, and has great chemistry with Markus Redmond and Perry Moore. Jada Pinkett-Smith displays all the beauty and charm that makes her irresistible, while channeling all of the fierceness and selfishness it takes to make her wholly undesirable. Phyllis Yvonne Stickley and Adrienne-Joi Johnson bring the most grounded and sincere human elements to the table, while Morris Chestnut plays the stereotypical womanizer role to a tee. Supporting appearances by Akia Victor and R&B group Jade round out the main cast.
While the film was not a financial success at the box office, there has been a slow but steady growth of a grassroots following that has discovered the film many years after the fact. As someone who has been a day one fan of the film, it’s nice to know that I’m not crazy, and it’s validating to know that I was way ahead of the curve in terms of The Inkwell fandom. I will certainly continue to bear the torch for this slept-on classic, and maybe in due time, it will find the connection with the masses that it always deserved.

queen nelisiwe of zimbabwe - naomi campbell
king kgosi of south africa - chadwick boseman
QUEEN NELISIWE ZULU & KING CONSORT CILLIAN ZULU
the queen is the third child of the late king of south africa. she was the last child to get shipped off, the title in her hands at the young age of twenty-one, along with an arrangement to the irish prince. the arrangement sought to end the war between the previous government and the zimbabwe people’s revolutionary army, providing ( hopefully ) a compromise and of course, expand the south african’s king influence in africa. they ruled over a turbulent zimbabwe.
now nelisiwe never dreamed of this. she dreamed of a life far from south africa, where she’d pursue whatever, whenever, wherever. dreams are cut short - after her college graduation she’s placed at the head of zimbabwe, alongside cillian zulu, née uí briúin ai. and the irish prince - he only knows duty. he’s determined to make this work, for him, and for ireland. he even takes on the zulu name, a testament to his dedication.
they have three children: reginald, nylane, and farai.
THE PRINCE AND PRINCESSES OF ZIMBABWE
crown prince reginald zulu (28) - rome flynn ( @rcginald )
princess nylane zulu (28) - jasmine tookes ( @nylvne )
princess farai zulu (25) - greta onieogou ( a wanted connection :) )
reggie and nylane are born only a few years after marriage, and the couple thought they would be enough. a boy and a girl, it was perfect ! they couldn’t ask for more. farai is an accident - or rather, unplanned. but it’s a blessing, no less. the twins pause playtime to ogle at her when she comes home, and it’s not long until she can start running along with them. she’s a treasure, but in comparison to reggie and nylane, she’s a nightmare. unlike the twins, she talks back, unashamedly.

💑👮💕🌼💗🎥💍💘 For Sloan and Gray please.
💑 What are my muse’s requirements for a potential partner?
Kindness, she’s a bit of an emotional pudding sometimes and even though she likes a strong slightly domineering type she needs him to be soft for her only.
Warmth.
Loyalty(yeah I know).
Understanding that she is not perfect even though she tries to be in some situations, that she makes mistakes.
Emotional stability.
The belief that relationships also aren’t perfect and they take work.
👮 Has my muse ever had sex in public? Yes
💕 Would my muse ever be in a polyamorous relationship? No, never.
🌼 Would my muse prefer a big wedding or a small wedding? She had a pretty big wedding with all her friends and family(minus her parents), in a garden that she and Marques had their first date.
💗 Has my muse ever been in love? She has and still is.
🎥 Who is my muse’s celebrity crush? Ohh she has so many, let’s see… Michael B. Jordan, Blair Underwood, Idris Elba, Morris Chestnut, Gucci Mane(it’s his smile)Broderick Hunter, Kofi Siriboe, The Rock, Lance Gross, plus a few more
💍 Has my muse ever had a one-night stand? Yes.
💘 What are the ways my muse says ‘I love you’ without actually saying it?
Mandatory snuggle time!!!!
Send them a text to let them know how much you miss them and are thinking of them.
Give them a compliment — or 10.
He’s always traveling so she likes to surprise him with a card for no reason except that you love them. Or pictures of the kids maybe a few sexy selfies of her telling him how she’d miss him.
Tell them how sexy they are, how proud of them you are, and how they are the most special person you know.
Pay attention to the things they mention they want by keeping a secret list on your phone.
Set some time aside every night and catch up on things.
💑 What are my muse’s requirements for a potential partner?
Honesty.
Kindness.
Warmth.
Loyalty.
Dominice.
Understanding her times at wanting to be alone but also understanding when she says she wants to be alone she doesn’t mean it(complicated),
Slight similarity on food taste, music, how they want their child raised.
A little more conscientiousness then she is because she has a small problem of giving herself too much and having to cancel obligations or she’ll burn herself out.
👮 Has my muse ever had sex in public? Hell yes
💕 Would my muse ever be in a polyamorous relationship? Yeah, she’d try it if it was two guys and her. She doesn’t like sharing her food she’d never like sharing someone’s love for her. She can be very possessive.
🌼 Would my muse prefer a big wedding or a small wedding? She’d prefer a small wedding and a big reception, like a party type thing.
💗 Has my muse ever been in love? She has and still is.
🎥 Who is my muse’s celebrity crush? Lol, long list. Jason Momoa!!!, Lil Wayne, Michael Ealy, Rick Fox, Rihanna, Dababy(the smile & dimples man….), Morris Chestnut, Jordan Calloway, Common, Priyanka Chopra, Doja Cat, plus a few more
💍 Has my muse ever had a one-night stand? Grayson??? No neva... jk, it’s all she ever did until she got caught up.
💘 What are the ways my muse says ‘I love you’ without actually saying it?
Still not the best cook but she tries her best to make some of the little things that he’s taught her since they’ve been together.
Physical touch, hugs, kisses, snuggles, and all that good stuff.
Take the initiative in grabbing their hand when you are walking together.
Say thank you and tell them how much you appreciate them.
Send them a sexy dirty text or selfies to let them know how much you miss them and are thinking of them.
She has always been independent, doing it for herself and all that but he loves taking care of her and she lets him in some things.
They can both get really busy, and they get up at different times in the morning sometimes she’s out at 6am and sometimes he’s up and off to work early. They get home at different times. So she loves just the 3 of them having breakfast or dinner as a family.
Saying “I love you” ya know, actually saying it.(it a rare thing for her to say anyway)
