Következő őszön a chesterfieldi lovasrendőrség valamiképpen értesült a kettős gyilkosságról, s mihelyt a hóviszonyok lehetővé tették, őrjáratot küldtek ki a gyilkos kézrekerítésére.  Uanguaq ez időben egy Kazan menti településen lakott. Ellenkezés nélkül tűrte, hogy nagybátyja, Igjugarjuk elfogja és kiszolgáltassa a rendőrségnek. S ettől kezdve a fehérek törvénye szabta meg a sorsát.
