• Avro Lancaster Bomber
The Avro Lancaster is a British Second World War heavy bomber. It was designed and manufactured by Avro as a contemporary of the Handley Page Halifax. The Lancaster would become one of the most capable strategic bombers of the Second World War.
The Lancaster has its origins in the twin-engine Avro Manchester which had been developed during the late 1930s in response to the Air Ministry Specification P.13/36 for a capable medium bomber for "world-wide use". Originally developed as an evolution of the Manchester (which had proved troublesome in service and was retired in 1942), the Lancaster was designed by Roy Chadwick and powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlins engines. During the late 1930s, none of these were ready for production. Both the United States and the Soviet Union were pursuing the development of bombers powered by arrangements of four smaller engines; the results of these projects proved to possess favourable characteristics such as excellent range and fair lifting capacity. Accordingly, in 1936, the RAF also decided to investigate the feasibility of the four-engined bomber. Various candidates were submitted for the specification by such manufacturers as Fairey, Boulton Paul, Handley Page and Shorts; all submissions were designed around two-engine configurations, using the Rolls-Royce Vulture, Napier Sabre, Fairey P.24 or Bristol Hercules engines. The majority of these engines were under development at this point; while four-engined bomber designs were considered for specification of a heavy bomber. In response, British aviation company Avro decided to submit its own design, designated the Avro 679, to meet Specification P.13/36. In February 1937, following consideration of the designs by the Air Ministry, Avro's design submission was selected along with Handley Page's bid being chosen as "second string". Accordingly, during April 1937, a pair of prototypes of both designs were ordered.
As early as mid-1940, Avro's chief design engineer, Roy Chadwick, had been working on an improved Manchester design. This redesign was powered by four of the more reliable but less powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, specifically adopting the form of the Merlin "Power Plant" installations which had been developed by Rolls-Royce for the earlier Beaufighter II, installed on a larger wing. Initially, the improved aircraft was designated as the Type 683 Manchester III; it was subsequently renamed as the Lancaster. The prototype aircraft, serial number BT308, was assembled by the Avro experimental flight department at Ringway Airport, Manchester; the prototype was constructed from a production Manchester airframe, which was combined with a new wing centre section designed to accommodate the additional engines. On January 9th, 1941, test pilot H. A. "Sam" Brown performed the prototype's maiden flight at RAF Ringway, Cheshire. Flight testing of the new aircraft quickly proved it to be a substantial improvement on its predecessor. The first prototype was initially outfitted with a three-finned tail layout, a result of the design having been adapted from the Manchester I; this was quickly revised on the second prototype. Some of the later orders for Manchesters were converted in favour of the Lancaster; both bombers shared various similarities and featured identical design features, such as the same distinctive greenhouse cockpit, turret nose and twin tail. The designs were so similar that an entire batch of partially constructed Manchesters were completed as Lancaster B I aircraft instead. Based upon its performance, a decision was taken early on to reequip twin-engine bomber squadrons with the Lancaster as quickly as possible. In October 1941, the first production Lancaster, L7527, powered by Merlin XX engines, conducted its first flight.
Avro received an initial contract for 1,070 Lancasters. The majority of Lancasters manufactured during the war years were constructed by Avro at its factory at Chadderton near Oldham, Greater Manchester and were test-flown from Woodford Aerodrome in Cheshire. As it was quickly recognised that Avro's capacity was exceeded by the wartime demand for the type, it was decided to form the Lancaster Aircraft Group, which comprised a number of companies that undertook the type's manufacture, either performing primary assembly themselves or producing various subsections and components for the other participating manufacturers. In addition to Avro, further Lancasters were constructed by Metropolitan-Vickers (1,080, also tested at Woodford) and Armstrong Whitworth. They were also produced at the Austin Motor Company works in Longbridge, Birmingham, later in the Second World War and post-war by Vickers-Armstrongs at Chester as well as at the Vickers Armstrong factory, Castle Bromwich, Birmingham. Belfast-based aircraft firm Short Brothers had also received an order for 200 Lancaster B Is, but this was cancelled before any aircraft had been completed. The Lancaster was also produced overseas. During early 1942, it was decided that the bomber should be produced in Canada, where it was manufactured by Victory Aircraft in Malton, Ontario. Of later variants, only the Canadian-built Lancaster B X was produced in significant numbers. A total of 430 of this type were built, earlier examples differing little from their British-built predecessors, except for using Packard-built Merlin engines and American-style instruments and electrics. By the time of the Lancaster's production by the end of the war and later into 1946, 7,377 aircraft were produced.
The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engined strategic bomber that was used as the RAF's principal heavy bomber during the latter half of the Second World War. The typical aircraft was powered by an arrangement of four wing-mounted Rolls-Royce Merlin piston engines, each of which drove a 13 ft (4.0 m) diameter de Havilland Hydromatic three-bladed propeller. While not optimal, the Lancaster was capable of flying the return journey home on only two operational engines, along with very limited distances on a single running engine. It possessed largely favourable flying characteristics, having been described by Goulding and Garbett as being: "a near-perfect flying machine, fast for its size and very smooth...such a delightfully easy aeroplane to fly...there are instances of Lancasters having been looped and barrel-rolled, both intentionally and otherwise". The Lancaster benefited from a structure that possessed considerable strength and durability, which had been intentionally designed to maximise structural strength-per-weight; this resulted in the Lancaster being capable of withstanding some levels of damage resulting from attacks by hostile interceptor aircraft and ground-based anti-aircraft batteries. However, during the first year of the type's career, some instances of structural failures were encountered on Lancaster B Is and a number of aircraft were lost in accidents as a result of the design limitations having been greatly exceeded. Compared with other contemporary aircraft, the Lancaster was not an easy aircraft to escape from as its escape hatch was only 22 in × 26.5 in (56 cm × 67 cm) in size; in a Halifax or Stirling (which both had an escape hatch 2 in (5.1 cm) wider), 25 per cent of downed aircrew bailed out successfully, and in American bombers (albeit in daylight raids) it was as high as a 50 per cent success rate while only 15 per cent of the Lancaster crew were able to bail out. The Lancaster uses a mid-wing cantilever monoplane configuration. The wing is constructed from five separate main sections while the fuselage is likewise composed of five sections. Aside from a few elements, such as the fabric-covered ailerons, the Lancaster's oval-shaped fuselage had an all-metal covering. All of the wing and fuselage sections were manufactured separately, during which they were outfitted with all of the required equipment in advance of final assembly being performed, as a measure intended to accelerate the rate of production. The Lancaster was equipped with a retractable main undercarriage and fixed tailwheel; the hydraulically-actuated main landing gear raised rearwards into recesses within the inner engine nacelles. The distinctive tail unit of the aircraft was outfitted with a large twin elliptical fins and rudder arrangement.
The standard crew for a Lancaster consisted of seven men, stationed in various positions in the fuselage. Starting at the nose, the bomb aimer had two positions to man. His primary location was lying prone on the floor of the nose of the aircraft, with access to the bombsight controls facing forward, with the bomb sights on his left and bomb release selectors on the right. He also used his view out of the large transparent perspex nose cupola to assist the navigator with map reading. To man the Frazer Nash FN5 nose turret, he stood up placing himself in position behind the triggers of the twin .303 in (7.7 mm) guns. Ammunition for the turret was 1,000 rounds per gun (rpg). The bomb aimer's position contained the nose emergency hatch in the floor; at 22 by 26.5 inches (560 by 670 mm) (two inches narrower than the Halifax escape hatch) it was difficult to exit through while wearing a parachute. On the roof of the bomb bay the pilot and flight engineer sat side by side under the expansive canopy, with the pilot sitting on the left on a raised portion of the floor (almost all British bombers, and most German bombers, had only a single pilot seat as opposed to American practice of carrying two pilots, or at least having controls for two pilots installed). The flight engineer sat on a collapsible seat (known as a "second dicky seat") to the pilot's right, with the fuel selectors and gauges on a panel behind him and to his right. The tail gunner escaped by rotating his turret to the rear, opening the door in the back of the turret, passing into the fuselage, and clipping on a parachute that was hung on the side wall. He could then exit through the rear entrance door. Behind the pilot and flight engineer, and behind a curtain fitted to allow him to use light to work, sat the navigator. His position faced to port with a chart table in front of him. An instrument panel showing the airspeed, altitude, and other information required for navigation was mounted on the side of the fuselage above the chart table. The wireless operator's radios were mounted on the left-hand end of the chart table, facing the rear of the aircraft. On his left was a window, and above him was the astrodome, used for visual signalling and by the navigator for celestial navigation. Behind the wireless operator were the two spars for the wing, which created a major obstacle for crew members moving down the fuselage even on the ground. On reaching the end of the bomb bay the floor dropped down to the bottom of the fuselage, and the mid-upper gunner's turret was reached. His position allowed a 360° view over the top of the aircraft, with two Browning .303 Mark IIs to protect the aircraft from above and to the side. The mid-upper gunner sat on a rectangle of canvas that was slung beneath the turret and would stay in position throughout the flight. Ammunition for the turret was 1,000 rounds per gun.
The Avro Lancaster was initially equipped with four Nash & Thompson Frazer Nash hydraulically operated turrets mounted in the nose, tail, mid-upper and underside. The original tail turret was equipped with four Browning .303 Mark II machine guns and all other turrets with two such machine guns. Late on in the war, as a result of statistical analysis, Freeman Dyson put forward a case for the removal of the majority of the Lancaster's defensive armament. He argued that this would reduce the overall loss rate as it would have the benefit of increasing the Lancaster's cruise speed by up to 50 mph (80 km/h) (assuming the bomb load was not increased at the same time), and thus make the bomber harder to shoot down. However this theory neglects the fact that the two main Luftwaffe night fighters of the time, the Me 110 and the Ju 88 in their night fighter versions were all capable of 300 mph (480 km/h), thus any 50 mph (80 km/h) increase over the Lancaster's normal cruising speed of around 180 mph (290 km/h), (giving a speed of 230 mph (370 km/h)) still left the Lancaster well within the interception speeds of these two aircraft. Only the FN-5A nose turret which was similar to the FN-5 used on the preceding Avro Manchester, the Vickers Wellington and the Short Stirling remained unchanged during the life of the design, except in instances where it was removed entirely. The ventral (underside) FN-64 turret quickly proved to be dead weight, being both difficult to sight because it relied on a periscope which limited the gunner's view to a 20-degree arc, and too slow to keep a target within its sights. Aside from early B Is and the prototype B IIs, the FN-64 was almost never used. The mid-upper (dorsal or top) turret was an FN-50 on early examples and the very similar FN-150 with improved sights and controls on later examples. On all but the earliest examples this turret was surrounded by a coaming which provided a track for a cam operated interruptor device which prevented the gunner from shooting the tail of his own aircraft. The tail turret was the most important defensive position and carried the heaviest armament. Despite this, the turrets used, starting with the FN-20, were never entirely satisfactory and numerous designs were tried. The FN-20 was replaced by the very similar FN-120 which used an improved gyroscopic gun sight (GGS). Many rear gunners insisted on having the centre section of perspex removed from the turret to improve visibility. The transparencies were difficult to see through at night, particularly when trying to keep watch for enemy night fighters that appeared without notice astern and below the aircraft when getting into position to open fire. Ultimately radar, rather than improved visibility, made the turret more effective. An important feature of the Lancaster was its unobstructed 33 ft (10 m) long bomb bay. At first, the heaviest bomb carried was the 4,000 lb (1,800 kg) high capacity HC "Cookie".[38] Bulged doors were added to 30 per cent of B Is to allow the aircraft to carry 8,000 lb (3,600 kg) and later 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) "Cookies". The Lancaster also carried a variety of smaller weapons, including the Small Bomb Container (SBC) which held 236 4 lb (1.8 kg) or 24 30 lb (14 kg) incendiary and explosive incendiary bomblets; 500 lb (230 kg) and 1,000 lb (450 kg) General Purpose High Explosive (GP/HE) bombs (these came in a variety of designs); 1,850 lb (840 kg) parachute deployed magnetic or acoustic mines, or 2,000 lb (910 kg) armour-piercing (AP) bombs; 250 lb (110 kg) Semi-Armour-Piercing (SAP) bombs, used up to 1942 against submarines; post 1942: 250 lb (110 kg) or 500 lb (230 kg) anti-submarine depth charges.
During early 1942, No. 44 Squadron, based at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, became the first RAF squadron to convert to the Lancaster; it was quickly followed by No. 97 Squadron, which was also based at Waddington. On March 2nd, 1942, the first operational mission of the Lancaster, deploying naval mines in the vicinity of Heligoland Bight, was performed by aircraft of No. 44 Sqn. On March 10th, 1942, the first bombing mission was conducted over the German city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia. While the Lancaster had been designed to conduct night-time operations, daylight raids were occasionally performed by the type as well. The existence of the Lancaster was revealed after a daytime raid upon an engine factory located in Augsburg, Swabia, Bavaria conducted by Nos. 44 and 97 Sqns on April 17th, 1942. Due to the high loss rates typically involved in such operations, daytime bombing missions were performed sparingly until the Allies had achieved a level of aerial supremacy over the Axis powers. During 1942, the Lancaster remained in relatively short supply, which meant that training and crew conversion courses typically had to be performed by the squadrons themselves; there were no aircraft furnished with dual controls at this time, and pilots would therefore have to perform their first flight without the instructor being capable of directly acting on the controls themselves. Throughout July 1943, large numbers of Lancasters participated in the devastating round-the-clock raids on the city of Hamburg during Air Chief Marshal Harris's "Operation Gomorrah". A particularly famous mission performed by the Lancaster was the mission flown May 16-17th, 1943, codenamed Operation Chastise, to destroy the dams of the Ruhr Valley. The operation was carried out by 617 Squadron in modified Mk IIIs carrying special drum-shaped bouncing bombs, which had been designed by British engineer Barnes Wallis. The story of the operation was later made into a film, The Dam Busters.
During the latter half of 1944, a series of high-profile bombing missions were performed by the Lancaster against the German battleship Tirpitz. Executed by Nos. 617 and 9 Sqns, a combination of Lancaster B I and B III bombers were armed with 12,000 lb 'Tallboy' bombs and were adapted with enlarged bomb bay doors in order to accommodate their special payloads and additional fuel tanks to provide the necessary endurance. A total of three attacks, individually codenamed Operation Paravane, Operation Obviate and Operation Catechism, were conducted against Tirpitz, which was anchored in a fjord in Occupied Norway. The first of these attacks disabled the vessel while the third mission was responsible for sinking the ship. As a result of actions such as Operation Chastise and the sinking of Tirpitz, No. 617 Sq was perhaps the most famous of all Lancaster squadrons. During early 1945, a total of 33 Lancaster B Is were modified so that they could deploy the 22,000 lb Grand Slam bomb, the heaviest conventional bomb to be used during the conflict. On March 13th, 1945, the first operational use of the Grand Slam was performed by a Lancaster of No. 617 Sqn against the Bielefeld viaduct in North Rhine-Westphalia. Amongst the final wartime operations performed by the Lancaster was the destruction of Eagle's Nest, the extensive holiday home complex used by German leader Adolf Hitler. RAF Lancasters dropped food into the Holland region of the occupied Netherlands, with the acquiescence of the occupying German forces, to feed people who were in danger of starvation. The Lancaster conducted a total of 156,000 sorties and dropped 608,612 long tons (618,378 tonnes) of bombs between 1942 and 1945. Only 35 Lancasters completed more than 100 successful operations each, and 3,249 were lost in action. The most successful survivor completed 139 operations, and was ultimately retired from service and scrapped in 1947. From 1942 onwards, the Lancaster became the mainstay of the British heavy bomber fleet; by the end of the war in Europe, there were roughly 50 squadrons equipped with the Lancaster, the majority of these being the Lancaster B I model. Adolf Galland (commander of the Luftwaffe fighters) considered the Lancaster to be "the best night bomber of the war", as did his adversary, Arthur "Bomber" Harris, who referred to it as the RAF Bomber Command's "shining sword".
Lancasters from Bomber Command were to have formed the main strength of Tiger Force, the Commonwealth bomber contingent scheduled to take part in Operation Downfall, the codename for the planned invasion of Japan in late 1945. Aircraft allocated to the Tiger Force were painted in white with black undersides and outfitted with additional radio units and navigational aids to facilitate their use in the Pacific theatre. The addition of large saddle-type external fuel tanks was considered and trialled in Australia and India, but this was discontinued due to their perceived vulnerability to attack. Prior to the decision to carry out extensive modifications under Silverplate to the Boeing B-29 Superfortress to allow it deliver atomic bombs over Japan, serious consideration was given to using the Lancaster with its cavernous bomb bay instead. Using the Lancaster would have required much less modification to the aircraft itself, but would have necessitated additional crew training for the USAAF crews. As a byproduct of its sound design and operational success, various developments and derivatives of the Lancaster were produced for both military and civilian purposes. One of these was the Avro Lincoln bomber, initially known as the Lancaster IV and Lancaster V. These two marks became the Lincoln B1 and B2 respectively. A civilian airliner was based on the Lancaster, known as the Lancastrian. In the post-war climate, the Lancaster continued to see use for several more years, during which a number of high-profile operations were conducted. Immediately following the end of hostilities, the Lancaster was used as a crude transport aircraft, being used to ferry thousands of prisoners of war (POWs) back to the British Isles from across the continent. In RAF service, the Lancaster remained at the forefront of Bomber Command; the Lancaster B I was gradually replaced by the improved Lancaster B I (F/E) models.
Of the 17 surviving and largely intact Lancasters known to exist, two are airworthy; one, PA474, based in Coningsby, the UK, is operated by The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and the other, called Vera (coded VR-A, FM213), is in Canada, operated by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, a suburb of Hamilton, Ontario. Another Lancaster, Just Jane, NX611, a B MkVII, based in East Kirkby Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is able to taxi but is not currently airworthy, though there are plans to return her to flight in the future. The fourth Lancaster with working engines and able to taxi is Bazalgette FM159 based at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, Alberta. It has been carefully restored from a vandalised state and is now a main tourist attraction. For the 2018 flying season, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Lancaster is painted in the markings of Guy Gibson's 617 Squadron aircraft (Code AJ-G, ED932) when he commanded the "Dambusters" raids.

Hollow
Title: Hollow TV: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Pairing: Rafael Barba x OFC Prompt: / Word Count: 3,428
Part 3
Lauren was enjoying her day off work. Rafael and she had found a routine that was fitting both their busy work life. When both were working they had either Rafael's mother watch Mariella or they brought Mariella over to Olivia where Lucy was watching Noah and their daughter together.
Lauren was putting Mariella down for a nap when her phone rang and woke the almost sleeping baby back up. The little girl started crying. Lauren sighed and picked up her landline looking at the caller. "It better be a good reason for calling me and waking Ella back up." Lauren was half the night awake caring for a restless Mariella. She needed sleep and it would have been nice to take it during her daughter's nap.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your day and wake up Ella but Olivia needs you down at the station", Fin apologized. "And no... it's not about missing paperwork. Just come over as soon as you can."
Lauren looked at the clock in the kitchen and exhaled. "Alright Fin. I'm on my way. But I have to bring Mariella with me. Lucy isn't available and Rafael's mother has an urgent meeting she needs to attend." Meanwhile, she's packing the diaper bag and changing the baby's outfit. "I'm on my way."
"Alright. Drive safe and don't hurry. If something happens to you guys, Barba's going to have our heads for it", Fin answered and ended the line clicked signaling that Fin hung up.
***
An hour later, Lauren entered the 1-6. She pushed the stroller into the bullpen and looked around. There was no one around. The precinct looked deserted. She walked with the stroller to Olivia's office. She lifted her hand to knock but the door was opened by Fin. "There you are." He helped Lauren inside Olivia's office. "I'll leave you two alone and man the phones." Carisi and Amanda were out probably following up a trace. Fin smiled at Mariella and the baby is laughing. Then he left the office closing the door behind him.
Lauren got Mariella out of her stroller and turned to Olivia. "Where's the fire, lieutenant?" Olivia stood up from her desk and walked over. "This morning a teenager came in and accused her caretaker in her group home of sexually assaulting her. We took him in for questioning but we got nothing out of him", she explained.
"And that's a reason for me to come in and bring Mariella with me?" Lauren was irritated. But Olivia shook her head. "It's nothing new that the perps are lying or at least don't say the whole truth during interrogation. That perp though... We didn't even start interrogating him when he asked for you."
"Me? But why?" The detective was puzzled. Why would a perp directly ask for you? The lieutenant walked over to a window. "Let me introduce you to Chester Sullivan. Fin got his files from his workplace. We checked him with our system. In both, we found a sealed file. Your name is mentioned in those files." Lauren walked up to the window with Mariella on her hip. The hair on the back of her neck stood up when she heard the name. Chester Sullivan. She never believed that her past would bite her ass some time in her life.
Lauren stepped closer to the window and looked through. Olivia stood next to her. The lieutenant didn't understand what was going on but she sensed it wasn't good. So she was standing close to her, but far enough away to give her space. Lauren stayed silent and stared through the window. Chester looked straight ahead. The young mother had the feeling that his cold, blue eyes bored holes into her body. Her face paled and she took a wobbly step back. Why did he have to come back now? Lauren was happy, had a little girl, and was engaged. Her life was perfect. This could ruin so many things.
Olivia stepped next to her. "What is going on, Lauren?" But Lauren didn't hear her. Everything sounded like it was muffled and far away. The next thing Lauren registered was the scenery change. Suddenly she wasn't in Olivia's office anymore but in her room in the group room.
***
Young Lauren just entered her room and closed the door behind her. She had just put down the three-year-old for the night. It was beyond her why she had to do it and not their caretaker. The girl sighed and changed into her pajamas. She still got some homework left to do and Lauren was adamant about finishing it. The prospect of a free weekend without homework or study spurred the girl on. The desk lamp was turned on. She sat at her desk and took out the rest of her homework. The room was completely dark beside her desk lamp.
When there was a knock on her door, she had already been able to do a small part of her homework. Lauren welcomed the person behind the closed door into her room. She was lucky that she didn't need to share her room with another girl. "I just want to check in on you to see if you need any help."
Chester smiled and took a seat on her bed next to her desk. "I'll see that you're nearly finished. I don't have to remind you not to be up too long." The man put a hand on her thigh and brushed over the skin. Lauren held her breath and tried to slide away from him. She was in a similar situation with him before and just wanted to flee. The young girl didn't want to go through it again.
"Come on. Don't be like that. I know that you want it", Chester said and pulled her towards him. "We both know that you liked what I did last time, right." Lauren shivered and tried to get away from him. But she couldn't. Chester had a tight grip on her arms. "Time to get the action started." The man was twice her age. The ID she found once shows that he is at least 32 years old. Chester laid the teenage girl on her bed, then turned off the desk lamp and shrouded the room in complete darkness. He chuckled. "Let's get started. Today we won't be interrupted because everyone is asleep."
Lauren closed her eyes and wished herself to her happy place. Everywhere in her imagination was better than the now.
***
"Lauren? You still here with us?" Olivia took Marielle into her arms. The baby tried desperately to get her mother's attention. Fin walked into Olivia's office and looked at her. "Everything okay in here." The sergeant could see through the blinds that weren't closed that something wasn't alright in Olivia's office and thought he should at least quickly check-in.
The lieutenant glanced over to him. "I don't know what's going on. One moment she's talking with me and the next she's somewhere else and doesn't react to a single thing around her." Olivia had trouble holding Mariella on one arm and caring for Lauren at the same time. Fin strained over to Olivia. "Let's get her to the couch. After I will get a glass of water and we'll wait together until she's coming back."
Fin led Lauren to the couch and gently pushed her down. All this time she didn't acknowledge his presence. Her glance was still far off. "You should also sit down, Liv. Ella is squirming a lot and I'm sure you don't want to drop her." Olivia nodded and sat down in an armchair next to her detective. "Good. I'll go and get a glass of water. I'm right back."
The sergeant left the office and left the door open. Olivia stayed behind and kept a close eye on Lauren while entertaining Mariella. The little girl shouldn't worry about her mother right now. Mariella had a lot of fun. She played with the lieutenant's hair. The baby sometimes looked at her mother and tried to gain her attention but didn't get fussy one bit as she saw that she didn't get it.
Fin came back with a glass of water and put it down on the table in front of the couch. "How is she?"
Olivia shook her head. "Nothing changed so far. Do you think we should call Barba? Maybe he can help us or knows what's going on with her." Fin took a close look at Lauren who still sat on the couch. Her expression was blank and she didn't lift a finger. You'd think she was a life-size, living doll.
Fin looked at Olivia. "I'll go and call Barba. Maybe he'll know what's going on." The sergeant stood up. His words seemed to get through to Lauren. "Don't call him. He can't take the case." The detective spoke quietly and Fin and Olivia had to listen carefully to understand her. Fin sat back down and took Mariella from Olivia. The little girl giggled. The lieutenant put a hand on the detective's knee. "Why can't he take the case?"
Lauren looked at her daughter and back to Olivia and Fin. "The jury would consider it biased because he is personally involved through me."
***
"Ms. Wilson... Is it right that you accused my client, Chester Sullivan, of sexual assault before?" the defense attorney asked Lauren. The detective was on the stand testifying. Barba was in the gallery. He recused himself from the case after Olivia told him that he's personally involved and that the jury might see it as prejudice. Lauren wished he wasn't here today. She told him some parts of what happened in her past but not all. It's going to hurt him when she's pushed to retell the other parts he doesn't know about just yet.
"That's correct. I was 18 years old when I reported it." Lauren answered and looked at the defense. To Barba's dislike, Buchanan has taken on Sullivan's defense. Lauren knew that she was in for a hard cross-examination but she was well prepared. And Rafael reassuring her that he won't leave her helped too. Buchanan nodded at Lauren's answer. "But why not earlier? Why not right after the first time?"
Lauren bit down on her lower lip nervously before she answered. "I was scared that no one would believe me. I had no evidence. It would have been he said she said."
"Alright. When you reported it, you said that it was going on for over two years. Why at the age of 18? What made you change your decision?" Buchanan was brutal. The detective had a slight feeling for what the lawyer was out for. Barba and Olivia shared a quick glance with each other. Both were tense and suspected what he was going for.
Lauren sighed. "I was raped by Mr. Sullivan. I went to the hospital and told them that I would go to the police myself." Buchanan nodded and walked back over to his desk getting the report she filed. He read the file and stepped towards her with the folder in hand. "Are you sure? Because the rape kit shows that the injuries you sustained could also be for rough sex. Was it consensual?"
Lauren scoffed. "It wasn't consensual. I screamed at him to stop. I scratched and punched him. I never wanted to have sex with him. He raped me." The courtroom was deadly silent after her exclaim. Lauren looked to the jury and back to the SVU ADA. But he wasn't much of help. The man looked at her with a look that said "I knew you would blow the case up".
"Am I right that you're engaged to Mr. Rafael Barba?" Buchanan questioned her. Lauren nodded. "That's right. But I don't understand what that's got to do with the case." The detective threw a short glance at the ADA. He leaned back in the chair and watched the scene play out.
"Is it right, that you're quite a lot younger than him?", the lawyer went on. A small smile came on his face. "You don't need to confirm this. But... could there be a chance that you like older men? Or is there any other reason for you to be with older men?" Lauren bit down on her lower lip again. That's when the ADA stood up and objected against Buchanan's approach. Nevertheless, the prosecution was too late and the jury heard it. Buchanan just put out reasonable doubt about Lauren's testimony in this case. "Withdrawn", Buchanan said before the judge could further intervene.
Buchanan asked her a few more questions before finishing his cross-examination with a satisfied look. The district attorney didn't object besides Buchanan's question to her current relationship. It was related to the age gap between her and Rafael. "Nothing further, your honor", Buchanan said and sat down next to his client. The judge turned to Lauren. "You're free to go, Ms. WIlson."
She stood up and left the witness box in a hurry. Rafael rose from his seat, so his girlfriend could take a seat between him and Olivia. But Lauren walked past him and left the courtroom. The ADA stared after her before making a move to follow her. Olivia grabbed his hand and shook her head. Rafael sighed and sat down. The lieutenant squeezed his hand and lent towards him. "Stay here. I'm going to check on her. I'll let you know if she needs you. Is your phone on silent?" The man nodded. "Yes. Thank you", he quietly answered. Benson stood up and left the courtroom. She knew that the toilets were close by. So this is where she would go check first.
***
Lauren left the toilet stall when Olivia came in. The detective didn't acknowledge her and stepped to the sink where she washed out her mouth. When Lauren looked into the mirror she saw her lieutenant standing behind her leaning against the wall between two stalls. "I'm fine, lieu. You don't have to ask", Lauren answered the silent question and threw the hand towel into the trash can.
Olivia pushed herself away from the wall and stepped over to her. "I don't need to say that you're lying to me and to yourself. So... out with the truth."
Lauren sighed. "I'm not fine." She turned around. "I can't go back in there. I feel humiliated. Buchanan painted an awful picture of me and let them think it was my fault. How... how can somebody like him sleep at night? Not even the devil would be so cruel."
The women stayed silent. They didn't have an answer to the question. "How's the trial?" Lauren looked at Olivia. "I didn't blow it, did I?" Olivia shook her head. "I don't think you did. Buchanan just wanted to get under your skin and make the jury question your credibility."
Lauren sighed. "Buchanan got what he wanted. He definitely got under my skin." She walked to the door and stopped. "Can you tell Barba that I went home?" The lieutenant nodded. "I tell him." The detective opened the door and took a step out. "And take all the time you'll need before coming back." She waved her hand and left the toilets.
***
A couple days later, Lauren was back in the courtroom. The jury came to a verdict. Rafael was holding his fiancée's hand. "It's going to be alright. I helped our ADA with the closing argument." But like the previous days, he didn't get much of an answer from her. Since her testimony she had nightmares and most of the time she refused any physical contact. Instead, she locks herself in the bathroom and he hears the shower running for an hour before she comes back. Her skin was red and irritated. Lauren goes back into bed and snuggles close to him. But she didn't speak about what's going on with her and Rafael didn't know how to address the situation with her.
He asked Olivia for advice and she suggested that Lauren speaks with a therapist. The lieutenant gave him Dr. Lindstorm's card. She promised to talk to Lauren over lunch to check in with her.
The judge and the jury walked in. Barba squeezed Lauren's hand one last time and prepared for the worst. And the worst outcome came true. The jury ruled "Not guilty". The ADA looked to his feet and then over to his fiancée who was awfully quiet. But who wouldn't? The scumbag came away with it again and was a free man. In front of the couple, Olivia tried to comfort their distraught victim who was crying.
The lieutenant turned around to her colleague. Lauren let go of Rafael's hand and left the courtroom in a hurry. Barba and her watched Lauren's retreating figure. Olivia looked at Rollins and Fin. Her sergeant nodded at her. "Go. We'll stay with her and Barba. Maybe we're leaving the courthouse soon."
Olivia stood up and looked at Barba. "Stay here. I'll check on her." She walked into the hallway and looked around but she couldn't see her. Her next stop was the restrooms where she found her last time. "Lauren, you in here?"
She got out of a stall and looked at her. "I'm fine. Just needed to get out of there." The young detective sighed. "I can't believe that he got away with it again. Maybe I shouldn't have testified. I screwed the whole case over and to top it off I screwed up my health, too."
Olivia turned Lauren towards her and put a hand on her shoulder. "You didn't screw up the case. You made it stronger. But I know that we're going to look into it. There has to be..." The lieutenant got interrupted by a gunshot and people screaming and running. She grabbed for her service weapon and walked to the door. "Stay here."
"The hell I will. I'm coming with you." Lauren opened her small handbag and got her weapon out. "Do you really think I go to court without it?" She held it up and then put on her badge. "Let's go and see what the ruckus is all about."
***
Both women left the toilets and tracked their way back to the courtroom carefully. People were still hurrying past them in a panic. "He's this way. He has a man as a hostage", a reporter informed Olivia after recognizing her. She nodded. "Get out. Hurry." The man nodded and hurried off.
Lauren and Olivia walked on when there was another gunshot heard in the hallway. "Put down the gun right now!" It was Amanda presumably yelling at the shooter. The lieutenant and detective ran the rest of the way. They witnessed the end of the hostage situation. The former defendant lay dead on the floor. A gunshot wound to the head. Olivia and Lauren exchanged a quick glance with each other. Lauren nodded, put her gun away, and grabbed Olivia's radio to call the coroner and back up.
"Reece, what did you do?" The female victim exclaimed. Reece looked at his girlfriend. "I was coming to get you and take you out for lunch. Your mom texted me that your tormentor got away with a not guilty. I had to do something. This piece of shit can't run around a free man and endanger more girls and women. I hope he rots in hell."
The SVU team exchanged knowing glances with each other. It was hard to arrest someone who did this. They all knew that Chester Sullivan was a scumbag but vigilante justice wasn't the right way. Fin walked over to Reece and put the guff on him. He read him his rights and walked him down to the patrol car.

El mensaje decía, “the fucking letter finally is here”.
Unos 47 mil pesos argentinos. The catch? Tudo legal.
Estoy contento? Sí. Durará? No sé.
YO NO TENGO TÍTULO UNIVERSITARIO.
Posta, no sean boludos.
11. Equipaje: Decidan bien qué van a llevar.
Posta.
17. The Do's before you go.
19. Stop being perfect. No sean perfectos. No importa. Me dijo "ok". Me dijo "ok". Todo está bien.
20. Help, I need somebody! Pidan ayuda.
21. Mobile and shite. Sirve.
22. Repitan el paso 18.
23. Work work work. Acá viene la papa. Actualicen el CV, pero no se maten. Acá no quieren diseños falopa.
28. Boys don't cry. Van a llorar, pelotudos. Me ven? Así.
Acéptenlos, lloren, a empastillarse y salir adelante, carajo!
31. Aprendan de los errores. Fracasar no está mal. Consiguieron trabajo? Bien!
Salud!
Eso.

MWW Artwork of the Day (5/13/19) Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901) A Corner of the Moulin de la Galette (1892) Oil on cardboard, 100 x 89.2 cm. National Gallery, Washington DC (Chester Dale Collection)
The painting was very likely made with Renoir's "Ball at the Moulin de la Galette" of 1876 in mind. In the 1870's, when Renoir went to the famous entertainment hall at the top of Montmartre, it was a thriving, open-air cafe concert where one spent weekend days drinking mulled wine or beer, chatting, and dancing. By 1889, the Moulin de la Galette had declined in popularity, supplanted by evening cafe concerts such as the Moulin Rouge.
Toulouse-Lautrec's painting takes us far from the sunlit, innocent world of Renoir. Against a back-drop of dancers, interpreted in caricature-like fashion, sit four figures. The most beautiful is the young woman at the lower left who turns away from the dance floor to look at something or someone outside of the picture. She is, in many ways, an archetypal woman of the fin de siecle, a distant muse lost in her own thoughts. Her superb profile almost glows, expressing her vulnerability in the raucous, almost vulgar, public setting.
The two other women, one older and the other thinner than the first woman, sit passively, waiting to be asked to dance. The single man behind them seems unaware of their presence. He extends his body over the railing as he looks intently beyond the picture plane, counteracting the gaze of the beautiful woman in the opposite direction. In this way, Toulouse-Lautrec suggests the ultimate isolation of urban dwellers like these, as well as the futility of their hopes and permanence of their loneliness.

Like Stars
Word count: 663
Pairing: Castiel x Reader
Summary: Having the love of an angel is like being part of a star, with all its glorious life.
A/N: My brain decided to spit this up at 11:30 PM after a long ass day. That being said, I have no clue if this metaphor is accurate; I read it in a fic somewhere. WARNING for character death.
–
Being in love with an angel is like being love with the stars. They’re always above you, even if it is too bright or too dark to see them. Forever beautiful, forever present. Forever shining in your sight.
For as long as you could remember, you were always in love with the stunning beauty of the sky above. Sunrise, midday, sunset, twilight. But the stars were always your favorite.
So perhaps it made sense that when you had first saw him, you compared his beauty to the stars. And maybe you were biased, or it was because he was older than the stars themselves, but you found him more beautiful than any other celestial body.
Stars always shone and sparkled far away; light-years from your reach, but he- he was right there, just a prayer away from under your fingers.
Your love, too, reflected the lifespan of a star.
It had started as a tiny spark. The forces of attraction had pulled and pushed until you were both powerless to stop the reaction, and the flames burst into life. It was an uncontrollable, unstoppable force, as if it had been pre-ordained by God himself.
Your love had burned hot then, as bright and blue and vital as the glowing Grace he held inside him; both a weapon and drug.
After a while, it had burned until it could burn so bright no longer, and it cooled slightly; maturing into orange, like the sunset that had bathed you in its light as the last of his Grace had faded away- spent in a desperate attempt to heal you.
The solar minimum came after that. Both human, your unbridled passion relaxed a measure, and you found a certain, pleasurably paced comfort in each other. Sometimes it felt like you were two bound molecules, the others in its structure taken away by other forces, their bonds too fragile to hold. But you two never broke, no matter the forces.
It reached its highest solar maximum when he reclaimed his Grace- for a while, you had felt as if you were both burning blue again, until circumstances clouded the sky over again. When the storm clouds parted, all that was left was a dusky red- the low embers of love. Still there, still hot, but no longer as consuming and desperate.
Love matures as fine wine did, you found. What was once physical and forbidden was now deeply familiar and comforting. Life was not easy- it never was. But it was made bearable by him at your side when he could be.
Looking back on it now, you wished you had realized that your love was like a star then. Perhaps it would have braced you for what was to come. Because after what felt like eons of blue, orange, and red love… It imploded; a supernova.
He was an angel, and you had never forgotten it. But seeing his wings splayed out on the ground; eyes empty after seeing them glow so brightly just a second before- It harshly reminded you of that fact. He had died in the fashion of a true star- with an almighty bang.
Perhaps it was a testament to your love that he had sacrificed himself for you; died to save you (Your thoughts chased each other for months after that; my fault all my fault).
Even now, you still felt like the nebulae left behind; everything your love once was, scattered and shredded into a hazy mass of confusion and danger.
The love between an angel and a human was like a star- beautiful, bright, and everlasting. But ever-changing from one state into the next; eventually just dust, and ashes.
It was a big bang like no other. And I would not trade it for all the stars in the sky, you thought, at the twilight of your life. In the next life, he and I shall be sea and sky; always touching at the edge, and impossible to part.
Fin

Note
I get that Barisi fans are hugely disappointed with this season, but I feel like it's presumptive of some Barisi fans to talk as if because *their* ship may not be as popular/getting new canon as previously, that the entire SVU fandom is "dying". That isn't so. There are still plenty of people actively creating content for and talking about other ships and characters, including ones who-*gasp*!-haven't even been on screen in an episode for 3-5 seasons or more! Barisi doesn't = all of SVU fandom.
Anon, I honestly wish I were only disappointed in this season for Barisi-related reasons. That would mean I’d still be able to find some excitement in the show, while being a little bummed out because my ship wasn’t getting any action. That’s a pretty standard fandom experience for shippers of non-canon or obscure pairings. Like, I still loved The X-Files, even after they killed off Krycek and, with him, my Krycek/Skinner fantasies. I still enjoyed Lost even after Jack and Juliet were toast. I still loved Person of Interest even after my two main ships (Carter/Reese and Shaw/Root) were literally killed. I wish that were the case with SVU.
I’ve made several posts about my issues with this season. I guess the main one would be this post, but you could also read any one of my episode analyses, none of which even mention Barisi. To reiterate some of my main issues, I find the messed up scheduling to be an added source of incoherence, because no character is allowed to have any type of growth, not when we’re watching episode 14 before we get to see episode 7. The supporting characters have all been reduced to cardboard cutouts.
And, the worst part is, even Benson, who is the protagonist, has regressed in terms of her personal story. We no longer see anything about her life. She’s front-and-center when it comes to working with cases or helping victims, but who is she? What does she do when she’s not working? We used to see her with boyfriends, with Barba, with Noah, with Lucy (though I think that actress is currently unavailable). When the main character has no personal growth, how can the rest of the characters expect any?
Admittedly, Sonny is my favorite character, so my main gripe with this season (and the main reason I loved Season 17 more than Season 16) is the fact his screentime has decreased and his character development has stalled. Completely. Barba fans could say the same, I’m sure. And they have. We used to get all those little hints about him, the drinking, the pills, the clenched fists, and this season there’s been nothing. And then, Fin fans have been experiencing this for decades, lol. And Amanda, who used to have a tumultuous but very rich backstory, because she thrived in the more melodramatic SVU seasons (14/15), much like Nick, well, she barely has anything to do, either.
But, characters aside, I also find the cases extremely troubling. I disagree with the “message” the writers are trying to send, almost every week. In previous seasons, my disagreements were far more rare. The mommy issues are especially glaring, and the “imperfect victim”/“flawed but relatable perpetrator” theme is getting old. So I can’t even enjoy SVU as a procedural anymore.
Now, when it comes to the SVU fandom dying out, my recent posts refer to tumblr, and the fandom as I experience it. I’m not active on twitter or other platforms (not when it comes to fandom stuff), so my only real exposure to the SVU fandom is tumblr itself. And, of course, I mostly engage with Barisi, Sonny and Barba fans, because that’s where my interests lie, lol. So I’m talking about my own experience, and the relative lack of interest that I’ve seen, at least compared to last season. I assume the people who send me asks about it are also Barisi/Sonny/Barba fans, and that’s why they come to me. To talk about the characters and/or the ship we all love.
I’ve never engaged much online with old school SVU fans (even though I’m actually one of them, and I’ve been watching the show from the very beginning), but I certainly understand they still exist (why wouldn’t they?). First of all, Benson is the constant, so the people who love her still get to enjoy their fave. But I’m sure that fans of older characters are still active when it comes to fic and edits, too. It’s true that people still create content for characters or ships like Benson/Stabler (of course) or Benson/Cabot (my second fave Olivia ship, after Benson/Amaro COME AT ME) or Fin/Munch, or Barba/Huang, or Casey/Chester Lake (pls send me links I love them). For characters they haven’t seen in years, as you said. Some of these fans have probably stopped watching the show altogether and i envy them.
Hell, Barisi itself is a very tiny part of the SVU fandom, and it’s still alive due to fan interest alone, because many of us still create salty content, even though the show is giving us nothing. The SVU fandom overall is also still very much alive, and it will probably never die.
That still doesn’t help me, though :D
I spoke of new fans in my previous posts, but a similar thought applies to old fans, as well. For a fan who has given up on the current content of the show and writes or reads fic for, like, Benson/Cabot (send links for that too, btw!) I can imagine why Season 18 would feel no different than Season 16. Because these fans may have lost their favorite character years ago, and they no longer care much about the ones who are still there. For me, a Sonny fan, well, I’m losing my fave while he’s still there. Same way Fin fans lost him, like, 8 years ago. And, to make matters worse, the show itself is no longer fun or even watchable, sometimes. That has caused a noticeable (at least on my dash) lack of interest.
Is this permanent? I hope not. For starters, this has all happened before. Season 18 is giving me Season 10 vibes. It feels like the start of a huge decline in quality, which will take a couple of years to be fixed. The thing is, the show just might have a couple of years still left in it, so maybe there’s still hope for improvement. A few new writers, a few new characters (which the show sorely needs!), and we’ll be good to go. Maybe :)
Lastly, in every post I mention the fact I’m sure there are plenty(? lol) of people who are still excited about the show. I’ll repeat it here. I do think the show itself is on its last legs, and the fandom has gotten less active overall, as is to be expected after 18 years, but of course people still care. So, those of you who still love SVU (or who no longer watch it but are still in love with Chester Lake or O'Halloran good taste btw!), keep doing you!

MWW Artwork of the Day (12/15/17) Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) The Houses of Parliament, Sunset (1903) Oil on canvas, 81.3 x 92.5 cm. National Gallery, Washington DC (Chester Dale Collection)
After completing his series devoted to the facade of the Rouen Cathedral and before beginning the monumental series inspired by his Japanese gardens at Giverny, Monet began work on a large group of paintings of the Thames River in London. In preparation for these, he made several trips to London in the winter months, during which he recorded and studied three motifs: the Waterloo and Charing Cross Bridges and the Houses of Parliament. "I love London," Monet wrote. "It is a mass, an ensemble, and it is so simple. Then, in London, what I love, above all, is the fog." So intent was he on capturing gradations of light as it is affected by fog that he undertook about one-hundred canvases. Of these, he finished thirty-seven, completed primarily in his Giverny studio.
In the London series, Monet chose to create an ensemble of urban paintings, in which the movement of pedestrians and carriages, of trains and boats, gives way to the greater rhythms of light playing, through fog and mist, upon enduring architectural forms. He planted himself in the Savoy Hotel, from which he could see the Charing Cross Bridge to his right and the Waterloo Bridge to his left, and at the Saint Thomas hospital, from which he painted the Houses of Parliament. But, it was the London fog, in all its pervasive nebulousness, that became the artist's predominant theme. For Monet, it was the indefinable nature of the fog that transformed or, in fin-de-siecle terms, "dematerialized" the river, the great stone bridges, and the rugged contours of the Parliament buildings. These became essential forms that anchored his pictures during the five years he elaborated and corrected the works in his studio.

(Refiriéndose directamente a Alessa).

3. “In the End” rompió record en los listados Billboard:
