Wilma Mankiller was a Women's Rights Activist. Wilma worked for several years as a leading #advocate for the Cherokee people. In 1985, Wilma became the #firstfemale principal chief of the #CherokeeTribe Nation. She sought to improve the nation’s #healthcare, education system, and government. Wilma attended #SkylineCollege and #SanFranciscoStateUniversity in California before enrolling at #FlamingRainbowUniversity in Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor's degree in #socialsciences. Thereafter, she took graduate courses at the #UniversityofArkansas. Wilma was greatly inspired by the attempts by Native Americans to reclaim the island of Alcatraz to become more active in #NativeAmerican issues. Always passionate about helping her people, she decided to return to Oklahoma in the mid-1970s and began working for the government of the Cherokee Indian Nation as a tribal planner and program developer. In 1979, Wilma battled a neuromuscular disease known as myasthenia gravis and the loss of her best friend, due a traumatic car accident. Prior to serving as principal chief, Wilma served as deputy chief of the #CherokeeNation for two years. After leaving office, she continued her activism on behalf of #NativeAmericans and women. She also taught for a short time at #DartmouthCollege. Wilma shared her experiences in her autobiography, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People. She also wrote and compiled Every Day Is a Good Day: Reflections by Contemporary Indigenous Women, featuring a forward by #Gloria Steinem. Wilma received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. After learning of Wilma's passing in 2010, President #BarackObama issued a statement about her: "As the #Cherokee Nation's #firstfemale chief, she transformed the nation-to-nation relationship between the Cherokee Nation and the federal government, and served as an inspiration to #women in Indian Country and across America. Her #legacy will continue to #encourage and motivate all who carry on her work." Girl, let your work speak for itself. Your #contributions will impact your #legacy and your people. #GirlsLikeMeInc #GLM #GoGirlGo #GoandDream http://www.girlslikemeinc.com #wilmamankiller
